1. Is it a Fruit?
ANALYZE LEARNERS
There are a total of 22 students that range from 8-9 years of age. The
students have already been introduced to the food pyramid and the
importance of good nutrition. Out of the 22 students, one male student
is Autistic (this student has a Para educator with him at all times to
provide him with assistance within the class). Overall, there should be no
behavioral issues except for the occasional reminders to the class when
they need to tone down their voices.
STATE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will be able to read a nutrition label to determine the
percentage of juice contained in a fruit juice.
2. Recognize that 100% is considered a whole and is something is not
100% it is not considered whole.
3. Graph the juice percentage of juice contained within the three different
fruit juices.
SELECT INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
1. Introduce nutrition label from a juice that is 100% fruit
2. Explain that 100% means the whole thing and connect it to 100%
being the same as all fruit.
3. Point out ingredient section and discuss percentage listed such as
Vitamin C and how the ingredients are added to make foods appear
healthier.
4. Introduce the second juice label that is not 100% fruit and explain
that if it is not 100% it is not real fruit.
UTILIZE MEDIA AND MATERIAL
2. 1. Break the class into 5 groups of 4 students with one group having a
total of 5 students.
2. Pass out 3 different juice box labels to each group making sure that
out of the three one is 100% real fruit.
3. Have the students focus their attention to the power point that will
instruct them on how to write the label for the name of the juice, how to
graph the percentage of the juice, and whether it is 100% fruit or not.
4. The students will work together and discuss which juice boxes are
100% fruit and which are not 100% fruit.
5. After the group discussion they would then work to complete their jug
graph handout which will be transferred onto the computer application
that they will use to deliver their findings to the class.
6. After graphing, the students will then be able to distinguish which
juice is 100% real fruit and which is not 100% fruit and justify their
findings.
REQUIRE LEARNER PARTICIPATION
Each student is required to give their input and justification as to which
fruit juice label is 100% real fruit. Within the groups the students should
all vote whom their group leader will be (this student will be responsible
for charting the group findings onto the juice box worksheet). A second
group member should be voted on as the group’s spokesperson (this
3. student will be tasked to deliver their findings to the class during the
presentation).
EVALUATE AND REVISE
Evaluation will be made during the student’s group presentation. The
student’s grades will be base on their ability to thoroughly explain and
justify their group findings.
