Editor's Notes
We aimed at

MOOCs are massive open online courses. It is very common to start open education movement to explain MOOC’s short history. Currently, there are many platforms and millions of students on MOOCs.
MOOCs have many drawbacks of course. One of those is lack of customised education in MOOCs. MOOCs are inefficient to meet each individual’s meets.

This is one of my research analysis. As it is seen in the graphic, there is a growing academic attention to the personalisation of MOOCs. According to our analysis, we divided the academic researches into three category. One is very new studies, third one identifies implemented works.
In this workshop study, we identified 5 top challenges for personalisation of MOOCs. This first one is diversity. As you know that thousands of learners enrol from many different countries and at different level of education.
They have different objectives to join courses. Consequently, there are many different needs for each.

MOOCs’ curriculum is rigid which is very teacher-centered. Knowledge is transmitted from professor to course participants
Students passively receive Knowledge: Course provider role is to be primary Knowledge giver and
primary evaluator.
The third challenge is teaching assistant. Even though platforms recruit teaching assistants, it is still not enough to identify and solve each individual’s problem. Also, recruiting more number of TA is not affordable for MOOC providers.
Assessment and feedback system is very simple in most of the MOOCs. Even though some MOOCs apply peer assessment techniques, there are still many concern around effectiveness. The challenge is how to support MOOC participants with immediate and constrictive feedback?

The last of top 5 challenges is data privacy. We desperately need data if we want to provide personalised education. However, we also need to discuss privacy and ethical boundaries to use the data.

Despite the difficulties, there are also many opportunities to provide personalisation. For example, Learning analytics is extremely helpful to understand learners’ behaviuors, skills, habits and so on.

Recommender Systems are also very convenient for both personalisation and MOOCs. Since recommender systems provide flexibility to learners, it is perfectly match the nature of MOOCs.
Image: https://i1.wp.com/opendistanceteachingandlearning.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/learning-analytics.jpg?fit=1000%2C1000
We said MOOC has a rigid curriculum and mostly teacher centric. Inquiry based learning pedagogy gives opportunity to learners use and learn through their own pervious experiences.
Self evaluation techniques have not been used widely in MOOCs. However, this could be very helpful for personalasation. Reflection logs, checklists, self-evaluations sheet, Inventories can be used.

Personal learning portfolio is the last opportunity listed in our work. This method could provide more efficient assessment technique in MOOCs. However, huge number of learners will still be challenging for applying this method.
