determining norms.
• To adapt and change elements of social,
economic, religious systems necessary for
achieving collective (political) goals.
• To protect the honor of the political system
from outside threats.
4. TYPE OF POLITICAL SYSTEMS
• There are three main types of political
systems.
• Totalitarian system
• Oligarchic system
• Democratic system
5. TOTALITARIAN SYSTEN
• This is a repressive, unfree type of society.
• A totalitarian society is usually ruled by a
dictator, and there is very little or no
freedom.
• In totalitarianism the government controls
almost every aspect of life.
6. OLIGARCHIC SYSTEM
• The political term oligarchy, comes to English
from the Greek with its meaning intact.
• Any form of government in which there is a
‘rule by a few’.
• It is a system in which a small group (elites)
rules and holds supreme power over a larger
society.
7. DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM
• Government by the people, exercised either
directly or through elected representatives.
• The common people, considered as the
primary source of political power.
• Majority rule.

systems around the world include:
• Democracy
• Republic
• Monarchy
• Communism
• Dictatorship
9. DEMOCRACY
A democracy in a more traditional sense is a
political system that allows for each
individual to participate.
10. REPUBLIC
• In theory, a republic is a political system in
which the government remains mostly subject
to those governed.
• Some of the types of republics that you might
see include:
• Crowned
• Single Party
• Capitalist
• Federal
• Parliamentary
11. MONARCHY
• When most of us think of a monarchy, we
think of the political systems of medieval
European countries.
• In a monarchy, a ruler is not usually chosen
by the voice of the people or their
representatives.
• Often a monarch is the head of state until he
or she death.
12. COMMUNISM
• Communism is often considered
an authoritarian political system.
• It is the philosophical, social, political, and
economic ideology and movement whose
ultimate goal is the establishment of
the communist society.
13. DICTATORSHIP
• Another authoritarian form of government is
the dictatorship.
• A dictator is the main individual ruling the
country.
• Dictators are not restricted by constitutions
or parliaments.
• Elections held are usually affairs in which the
dictator is the only candidate.
