5. But with the power in the hands of
a leader (influence is power) is
is important that the
leadership we exercise or
chooses is tempered with
justice, honesty and wisdom.
6. Leadership is not a position, it is a
responsibility. And as it is said
in Spiderman the Movie, with
great power comes great
responsibility.
8. The leadership
style of Jesus is
one of thinking
outside the box.
Jesus taught that:
-the first shall be
last
-take up your cross
and follow me
-to be great in the
eyes of God is to
be a servant
9. His teaching in leadership was
upside-down and backward. This is
the kind of leadership that Jesus
had. He did not confine himself to a
set of boundaries and limitations. He
thought out of the box. But of
course, he lived and acted in
accordance to God’s desire of a holy
and principled life.
10. More than giving orders, leadership is
more about following. As the cliché
goes, a good leader is a good
follower. Likewise, the most
effective leaders lead by example.
With Jesus we got a lot more of
theory. He modeled his teachings.
He was a servant.
11. What is Leadership “Jesus
– Style”?
Jesus’ leadership is a
transformational
leadership.
It had a cycle of transformation that
“begins from personal leadership, then
to leading others in one-on-one
relationship, then to leading a team or
group and finally leading an organization
or community.
12. Before one becomes an effective
leader, one must be a faithful
follower. Hence personal
leadership is a must:
• we must be able to control our
desires
• master our character
• Overcome our own
weaknesses.
13. Once the leader has mastered oneself,
he must then gain the confidence,
respect and trust of her / his peer.
This is usually done one person at
a time, founded on a one-on-one
relationship. Before you can
influence an entire group, you
must first be able to show others
that at least one other person will
entrust her / his life in your hands.
14. The four Aspects of
Jesus-Style
Leadership
A. Internal Domain –
contend mainly with
matters that are
within the person.
15. 1. HEART – influencing others is
mainly a heart issue. Your
motivation for attempting to
influence others is at question.
Are you doing it out of a sincere
desire to help or serve? Or are
you doing it for personal benefit?
16. 2. HEAD – having the right
motivations to lead by
service is further
enhanced when a leader
is able to rationalize her /
his motives to serve and
has a clear definition of
her / his role in the lives
of those whom s/he
leads. This refers to
one’s perspectives.
17. B. External Domain – which deals
with what the leader does in
public or what others
experience in dealing with
her/him in a day to day habits.
18. 1. Hands – what the
leader does in
public will reveal
to those around
him/her the
desires of one’s
heart and the
reasons in one’s
head.
19. A leader who has the purest
motivations and a clear
perspective of one’s role will be
able to raise leaders who will
carry on his / her work long after
s/he is gone or moved on.
20. As leadership is influencing others, it
may be said that being able to
inspire his one’s works to do the
same is a measure of success for a
leader.
21. 2. Habits – are repetitive behavior.
In leadership, repetition of the
act of servant leadership is
actually a renewal of the
commitment to serve than be
served.
It is a manifestation that the leader
has internalized one’s
responsibility and does not to
have to consciously make an
effort to fulfill one’s role as a
source of influence to others.
22. It has become automatic, a way of
life; another word for it is
consistency.
The external domain is usually
what makes people decide
whether to follow the leader or
not.
26. But Jesus did not view himself as a
failure because of his disciples
character flaws and neither
should be. After all, Gods truth
did eventually transform them.
27. IMPULSIVE. Peter exemplified
this trait perhaps more than
the others. James and John
were not called Sons of
Thunder for any reason. And
what about Simon the Zealot?
These were hot-tempered,
impulsive men.
28. SINFUL and CONFUSED. James
wanted social recognition and
power. Peter cursed Christ.
29. Zacchaeus was a money lover, and
Mary Magdalene has seven
demons.
30. In other words, Jesus followers had
many problems in life. But Jesus
knew of their sinful struggles,
and he still created an open
environment where they felt safe
to bring him those problems.
31. IGNORANT and PREJUDICED. Many
of Jesus’ disciples came from a
common walk of life. They were
not educated, and were often
ignorant about spiritual things.
32. WISHY-WASHY. The disciples did
not carry out faithfully that
which they understood and
received with open minds. They
wavered a great deal in their
faith journey.
33. But in spite of these weaknesses,
Jesus did not give up on his
followers. Instead, the disciples
were made to be a mighty army
that eventually altered the
history of the world.
34. He led and mentored his 12
disciples and they in turn were
sent out to further the work he
was doing.
35. Jesus did this through THE GREAT
COMMISSION, when he
empowered his disciples to “go
out into the world” and continue
the work he started.
37. Personal Character of Jesus
• Jesus as courageous/fearless
• Jesus as compassionate-helping the
hurting
• Jesus as forgiving
• Jesus as forsaking riches/material
possessions
• Jesus as praying-taking time alone
with God
• Jesus befriending and promoting the
lowly
38. VINCENTIAN LEADERSHIP
To be a good leader you have to
study the patterns of the most
effective leaders who have
ever lived. The most effective
leader was Jesus.
39. He spearheaded the concept of
servant leadership – Jesus
knew who he was and showed
that being a servant is the best
way to behave in leadership.
40. Jesus taught that
you do not have to
be a hero to be a
leader. He taught the
opposite and this is
what our founder, St.
Vincent de Paul
followed. That to be
a leader you must be
a servant.
41. He taught that
there is no need
to pull rank on
each other and
that “the
greatest among
you will be your
servant.” (Matt.
23 ff).
42. Servant leaders are willing to
“walk the talk”; to live by the
values they espoused. Jesus
was willing to “walk the talk”
when he demonstrated his
commitment to this principle by
washing his disciples feet (Jn.
13:5)
43. When Jesus washed the disciples’
feet it was to drive home the
point that leadership is first and
foremost, all about service.
Service to others, not self-
service.
44. He pronounced the dictum he
repeated on many occasions
“Whoever wants to be great
among you must be your
servant.” and the model for this
management style of Jesus
himself? As he said:
45. “The Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve and to give
his life as a ransom for many.
Servant leadership may be style of
management to corporations but
to Jesus it was an attitude of
heart.
46. VINCENT’S WAY OF
LEADERSHIP
When he was
44years old, he
founded the
Congregation of the
Missions, when he
was 52, he founded
the Daughters of
Charity.
47. When he saw the crying needs of
the poor, he founded the Ladies of
Charity and the Confraternities of
Charity. During his lifetime he
founded 20 seminaries.
48. At the same time he was the
counselor of kings and queens
and the friend of great number
of spiritual leaders of the day.
In the homily at his funeral, the
preacher said. “He just about
transformed the face of the
church.”
50. VINCENTIAN SERVICE
1. Vincentian service is based on
a vision of faith characterized
by the spirit of the gospel.
- our way of seeing things in
faith and our gospel spirit
should move us “to humanise
our techniques”. Persons are
more important than efficiency
and productivity.
51. - Bring “personalized approach”
to our service.
2. Vincentian service is an
integral service
- corporal and spiritual service
* holistic
* the analyze the root cause of
the problem
* service is both effective and
effective (motivation; creative
and organized responses)
52. 3. Vincentian service is carried
out in collaboration with
other people.
- people we work with become
partners in promoting their
development
- in the spirit of partnership and
mutuality
* share in decision making
* promote co-responsibility
53. * willingness not only to give
but also receive
* Moving from the attitude of
“being the voice of the
voiceless “ to that of helping
others let their own voice be
heard so that they can speak
from themselves.
54. REFLECTION / SHARING
1. Which of the qualities for
Servant Leadership most speak
to you as a Servant Leader?
2. Think of someone who you
think is a Servant Leader?
3. What qualities made this leader
effective?
