Student employment documentary script
1. Student employment documentary script:
Mollie: Alevels, Btecs, exams, work, part time jobs! Is it all too much? We’re here at Solihull
sixth form college to find out.
Mollie: Trying to juggle exams, revision, college, and a social life can be hard. And then
there is the problem of finding the money to go out and do the things you want to do so you
need a job. (show images of students tweeting about having no money, ‘broke’ etc ) But is
balancing a job, college work and a social life too much pressure?
We asked a few students from Solihull sixth form to see what they thought.
Vox pops: Students
1) Do you have a part time job?
2) Was it difficult to find a job?
3) Do you find it difficult to balance a job and college work?
Mollie: It is clear that most students find it hard to even get a job as most employers require
staff members that have experience which makes it hard for students to get the experience
to get a job.
You can also see that most students find it hard to balance a job and college work, let’s find
out how those who have a job, manage balancing the two.
Vox pops: students
1) How do you balance the two? Any tips?
Mollie: With regards to students and money, we asked a few people what they think about
having to pay adult buss faire at the age of 16 but being paid a lower wage than an adult?
Vox pops: students
1) Do you think it’s unfair that you have to pay adult bus fair at the age of 16 but
receive a lower wage than adults in the same job as you?
Mollie: From interviewing a few students we have concluded that most students find it
hard to A) get a job. B) balance a job with college. C) to afford the thing they want to do, eg
social life. Now we have seen a glimpse of what life is like in college let’s take a look at
working life – footage of Mollie at work
Mollie: voice over – The percentage of full-time 16- to 24-year-old college students who
were employed declined from 52 percent to 40 percent between 2000 and 2013. During the
same time period, the percentage of part-time students who were employed declined from
85 percent to 76 percent. With 60% of all college students receiving no financial help from
their parents, they rely heavily on a job to fund them but employers seem to be taking less
students on as they require more flexible, longer hours that students can’t do.
Mollie: We asked a few adults to see if they understand the pressures of balancing a job
2. with college.
Vox Pops: Adults
1) Did you have a part time job when you were younger?
2) Do you think that students find it hard to balance work with college?
3) If you were in an employer’s position would you employ a full time student?
4) Do you think students should earn less than an adults pay?
5) Do you think university fees are too expensive?
6) Do you think it’s a good idea for students to have a part time job or is it too
distracting?
Mollie: some adults do understand the pressures, however, others have said they aren’t oo
sure about this subject as its ‘past their time’
Mollie: we decided to ask a few experts about their opinion. We asked Sarah law, an
academic coach about her thoughts as she works with student and understands what
students have to do as she guides them.
Expert interview:
Mollie: We also asked an employer at Solihull Hospital about her thoughts:
Expert interview:
Mollie: From these interviews we can see how employers do have concerns about
employing students and the difficulties of being student and balancing a job.
Mollie: voice over. Many students have hobbies or other commitments as well as college
that also makes it difficult to get a job. - footage of boys playing football
Mollie: we have concluded that its hard for students to balance college with work and still
have a social life and enjoy their younger years. Also most adults do not understand the
pressures as they never experienced it themselves when they were younger as prices are
always increasing and the need for a job is much higher now.
