The document discusses ways in which the magazine cover and contents page attract the target audience's attention. The cover uses a large, catchy font for the masthead and splashes of red against dull colors. On the contents page, the largest image gives direct address to viewers while others do not, creating a rap/hip-hop mood. Headings are in bold red to draw the eye, and an album cover and quote encourage reading further. Against conventions, females are featured to appeal to reader preferences.

1.
2. I have tried to grab my audience’s attention in many ways. For
example, my masthead uses a particularly catchy font and is very
large. This would attract the audience’s attention. In addition to
this, I have used mainly monochrome colours and splashes of red.
This particular colour is normally associated with this genre, and
the brightness stands out against the other dull colours, grabbing
the audience’s attention. In addition, I have created a formal layout
on the front cover: the cover lines do not go all over the place. I
found that this is a convention typically used in this genre and it
worked well on my front cover – I think that this particular look will
attract my target audience. My main model is giving a stern look to
the camera, giving direct address. This direct address will entice the
audience and make them want to pick up the magazine and buy it.
The costume used in the image (for example the hoodie) shows the
audience what genre this is and will make the fans of this genre
want to pick it up, as they can instantly associate the genre with the
costume.
3. By going against certain conventions of rap and hip hop magazines I
have made the magazine more attractive to the target audience. For
example, one thing I learnt from research was that the target
audience said they wanted to see females featured inside the
magazine. Although this goes against the conventions of rap
magazines, I decided to go ahead and do it. I think that by using the
mise en scene to give the females an atmosphere of hip hop, it
works well on the contents page. Again, having the biggest image on
my contents page give direct address to the audience creates the
atmosphere created normally in rap or hip hop magazines. However,
I have also included pictures that do not give direct address.
I also think that the colour scheme is again very useful in helping
attract the audience’s attention. The headings are in red and more
bold so the audience’s attention will be grabbed to these first, and
there is a quick description of what will be on the pages
underneath. I created an album cover on the bottom left of the
contents page as this is what the target audience said they wanted
to see in the magazine, so seeing featured albums will make the
audience want to buy it.
I also think the gradient I used in the background is effective as it gives the contents page
a more formal look, and makes the magazine in general seem a lot more formal. The grab
quote on this page will also make the audience want to read the main article.
4. One very important way my DPS attracts
the audiences attention is through the
use of the very bold red title which
stands out a lot on the pages. This will
instantly give the readers something to
look at and will make them want to read
on. I think that the large image on the
left is very effective in attracting the
audience as the main model is giving
direct address to them, but everyone
else is not looking at the camera. I think
that this works very well in creating a
mood of rap and hip hop and makes the
audience want to know what the article
is about.
In addition, I think that the grab quote placed above the image works well. The highlighted
words in red and the font seems more elaborate, and this will make the audience want to
read to see what the whole article was about. I think that using an article on my DPS instead
of a Q&A is good because conventionally, this is the sort of articles that go with rap/hip hop
magazines. The white text underneath the title gives a quick overview, and the black writing
goes into detail about the artist. The white font also contrasts with the other text on this
spread so it is effective.
