2. Introduction to Greg Mortenson
• Greg Mortenson , born in December 27 1957,was an
American professional speaker, writer, veteran, former
mountaineer and a social entrepreneur.
• He too was the co-founder and former executive director
of the non-profit Central Asia Institute
• He was also the founder of the educational
charity Pennies for Peace.
• Mortenson was the co-author of The New York
Times, Three Cups of Tea, which stayed on the New York
Times bestseller list for 220 weeks.
• Three Cups of Tea was written in 47 languages.
3. Introduction
• Mortsenson was born in St.Cloud Minnesota
where his parents, Irvin and Jerene, went with
the Lutheran Church to Tanzania in 1958 to be
teachers at a girls' school in the Usambara
mountains.
• He spended his early childhood in Tanzania,
and learnt how to speak fluent Swahili
4. Impact and History
• Mortenson initially took a wrong turn on the trail
and ended up in the small village of Korphe. He
was all alone there however, Mortenson was
cared for by some of Korphe's residents while he
recovered.
• As a sign of gratitude to the community for their
assistance to him, Mortenson built a school for
the village after he noticed local students
attending school in an outdoor location and
writing out their lessons in the dirt.
5. Impact & History
• Mortenson need spoken broadly over the importance
of education and literacy to kids and particularly young
girls
• He then stated that girls' education is the most
important investment that countries can make to
create stability, bring socio-economic reformation and
decrease infant mortality, as well as improving hygiene
and sanitation
• His view was that "fighting terrorism" was an endless
cycle of violence where there should instead be a
global priority to "promote peace" through education
and literacy
