2. INTRODUCTION
Greg Mortenson is a humanitarian, professional speaker,
writer, and former mountaineer. He was the co-founder
and former executive director of the non-profit Central
Asia Institute as well as the founder of the educational
charity Pennies for Peace. Mortenson was the author or
co-author of the New York Times Bestsellers Three Cups
of Tea and Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with
Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In April
2011, he was accused of fabrication in his non-fiction
books and of financial improprieties at his charity, Central
Asia Institute.
3. SOCIAL
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Over the past 16 years, Greg Mortenson, through his non-
profit Central Asia Institute (CAI), has worked to promote
peace through education by establishing more than 130
schools, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
His book is called Stones into Schools.
Mortenson has written and spoken widely about the
importance of education and literacy for girls worldwide.
Mortenson emphasized that providing children with
schooling offers the best weapon against injustice and
social stagnancy.
4. HISTORY OF THE
VENTURE
Mortenson said he would build a school for the village
after he noticed local students attending school in an
outdoor location and writing out their lessons in the dirt.
He wanted to build it as the local students as they do not
have a proper school and he feel sad for them.
The promise he made after he went the wrong direction
and arrive at a village when he came down from K2.
5. IMPACT OF THE
VENTURE
Criticism - Morteson management style at CAI, Nicholas
Kristof has said that Mortenson is “utterly disorganized”.
Allegation - CBS News' 60 Minutes, correspondent Steve
Kroft alleged inaccuracies in Mortenson's books.
Lawsuits - Jean Price and Michele Reinhart, Democratic
Party representatives in Montana, along with Dan
Donovan, a Great Falls attorney, filed a class action
lawsuit against Mortenson.
