2. Introduction
Former hedge fund manager and
philanthropist Art Samberg is a pioneer in the
hedge fund industry. Also an avid adventurer,
Arthur J. Samberg summited Mount
Kilimanjaro in 2000.
3. Background
Summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is a dream-
come-true for many mountaineering
enthusiasts. Adequate physical preparation
and equipment are keys to trekking
Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing
mountain in the world and tallest in Africa.
Even the most experienced climbers can suffer
altitude sickness, one of several risks resulting
from the peak’s high elevation, low
temperatures, and periodic high winds.
4. About Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mt. Kilimanjaro features six trekking routes:
Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Rongai, Shira,
and Umbwe. The Rongai route and Marangu
are among the easiest routes and thus very
popular with climbers for ascent and descent.
Machame is the steepest, but also most scenic
route, and requires a minimum of six or seven
days of climbing to reach the summit. In all
ascents, careful planning and a sensible
itinerary helps ensure acclimatization to high
elevation, decreases risk, and enhances
enjoyment.
5. Conclusion
Despite the inherent risks, climbing the unique
stratovolcano allows trekkers to witness
Kilimanjaro’s unique biodiversity. Kilimanjaro is
renowned for its large variety of forest types
and unusual absence of a bamboo zone that
occurs on all other East African peaks with
comparable rainfall.
