1. Lemosho Route | The Best Route to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
The best route for Kili trek. it takes 7 – 8 Days to reach the summit. Lemosho Route is an advanced
route to Kilimanjaro, which approaches from the west. Due to a fewer crowd, scenic variety and
high success rates, Lemosho is one of the most favoured routes in spite of it is a difficult and long
route. Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro & Success Rates. What is the Lemosho Route Summit Success
Rate? Due to its longer length profile, summit success rates on the Lemosho route are one of the
highest on the mountain. Whilst there are no official statistics, the average success rate across all
operators is 90% for the 8 day trek and a 85% success rate for the 7 day trek.
The trek starts from the rain forest, crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau and the path combines
with the Machame Route. The route holds a longer distance to cover the whole ecosystem as
compared to other routes.
Although is considered a difficult route, the extra days to trek the mountain make the
acclimatization better. As the trail of this route begins from the rain forest, It is scenically
considered the most varied and the most beautiful route.
Perfect Route
Lemosho route is a perfect route for those who are good with altitude acclimatization, and who are
confident in their ability to walk over steeper paths for extended periods and want a lesser-used
route. However, Lemosho is a little more expensive than the other routes as it offers more
adventure.
The Lemosho route is approximately 70 km/ 42 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for
physically fit people with some hiking experience.
From there, the temperatures will decrease as you move through Mount Kilimanjaro’s ecological
zones. At the summit, Uhuru Point, the night time temperatures can range between 20 and -20
degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to -29 degrees Celsius). Due to Mount Kilimanjaro’s great height, the
mountain creates its own weather.
Best Trekking Months. There are two distinct trekking seasons which constitute the best
time to climb Kilimanjaro. They are January-March and June-October. January-March is
generally colder than June-October and there is a higher probability of encountering snow on the
summit.
2. Machame Route | The Most Popular Route on Mount Kilimanjaro.
How long is the Machame Route? it takes almost 6 – 7 Days Trekking! It can be budget trekking
or luxury one depending on your request. Machame Route is one of the most favoured routes for
a number of hikers. The reason behind this is the highest success rate, great for acclimatization
and this route also allows the climbers to naturally “walk high and sleep low”.
The route offers great scenery, which changes every day as you walk higher. If summiting
Kilimanjaro is your ultimate priority, then the Machame route will give you the best result.
Machame route is undoubtedly the most crowded route since it holds a great success rate and is
really attractive.
To make your trekking more enjoyable, we make sure all our groups to hit the trail early and get
ahead of the crowds. Our porters will be there before you reach and will welcome you with a nice
hot drink and snacks.
Whiskey Route
Even though the Machame route can be conquered over 6 days, normally 7 days is recommended
for this. The extra days can make a huge difference to the success rate as it improves the
acclimatization and allows you to submit easily.
The Machame Route is known as the “Whiskey Route” in comparison to Marangu’s “Coca Cola
Route”. This is because Machame is a more difficult route, and does not have sleeping huts for
accommodation like Marangu Route. Machame is the most popular and challenging route when
considering to get to the Kilimanjaro mountain with the best scenic views.
The trek starts in the south-west area of the mountain at Machame Gate. The route takings six days
minimum to thorough, although you can trek Kilimanjaro via Machame in 7 days. The descent is
down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain.
The best route to climb Kilimanjaro
Machame Route is one of the best options for climbing Kilimanjaro and reputed to have the highest
success rate. This scenic route offers a longer period for acclimatization and takes different routes
up and down the mountain so you don’t do any backtracking over the same terrain. It features a
tented camping experience as opposed to the Marangu Route which makes use of an extensive
mountain hut system.
What are the routes up Kilimanjaro?
Here is a brief overview of the seven routes;
 Marangu Route – The Tourist Route.
 Machame Route – The Popular Route.
 Lemosho Route – The Most Scenic (But Most Expensive) Route.
 Shira Route – The “Poor Acclimatisation” Route.
 Rongai Route – The Easiest Route.
 Umbwe Route – The Most Difficult Route.
 Northern Circuit Route – The longest route take 8-9 Day
Since the slope in the west and descent depressed the north, Machame provides countless views
of Kilimanjaro. Furthermore, Machame stopovers fabulous places such as Shira Plateau, Barranco,
and Lava Tower.
3. Marangu Route | Sleep in Huts on Kilimanjaro.
Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route, it’s the easiest route to get at the top of the
mountain. (how long does it take Marangu Route to reach the peak? (Always it take 5 – 6 Days to
reach Gilman point/ Uhuru peak.)
Marangu route is the most popular route on the mountain. It is the only route that offers sleeping
huts with drinks like Coca-Cola on the way.
Considered to be the most tourist-friendly region, Marangu is the easiest route on Kilimanjaro.
The ascent profile is very gradual and steady and allows painless trekking for most of the way.
The route is mostly chosen by inexperienced climbers, due to its reputation as an easy route.
The trek starts from the south-east area of the mountain at Marangu Gate. The accommodation
along the route offers a dining hall and bunk beds, well equipped with mattresses and pillows. It
is also cheaper to climb, due to the close proximity of the gate to Moshi. The descent is through
the same path, contributing to Marangu’s cramped feeling.
Scenically, Marangu is not that much attractive as compared to other routes. However, the trek is
through the trail of the rainforest. Still, it offers great views of the Mawenzi. Marangu is a good
choice for the hikers, who are less confident about their ability to hike over steeper paths.
Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is the only route which offers residence style of accommodation to
visitors. So book your tour to Kilimanjaro Marangu today. The Trekker will ascent and descent
through the same trail experiencing 5 and 6 Days Hiking.
4. Rongai Route Kilimanjaro- 95% Summit Success Rate.
The Rongai Route is the only route that connects Kilimanjaro from the north and is close to
Kenyan border. The ascent profile of Rongai Route is very similar to that of Marangu. It is one of
Kilimanjaro’s easier routes to the summit as the climb to the top is gradual and steady.
Unlike Marangu, this route experiences fewer crowds and passes through remote wilderness areas.
It is probably the only route where you can witness the wildlife in the first days of acclimatization.
The route connects Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the mountain, alongside the border
between Tanzania and Kenya.
Holding a sense of perfect wilderness, it offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by
approaching from the north. The climbing high and sleeping low principle is not applicable here
due to the topography of the route.
Hikers may suffer from altitude sickness as compared to other routes.
Kilimanjaro Route is considered to be less crowded with high summit rates and gentle incline and
sense of unspoilt wilderness.
High crowded Route
 The only the northern approach to Kilimanjaro
 Offers a true wilderness experience on the early stages of the climb
 Very tough final summit night from the north
 Fewer acclimatization opportunities
 Less scenic and flat than other routes
Also known as the Nalemuru route. Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes,
Rongai makes up for this by passing through true wilderness areas for days before joining the
Marangu route at Kibo camp. Rongai is a moderately difficult route and is highly recommended,
especially for those with less backpacking experience. There are different options to complete the
climb in 5, 6, or 7 days.
( Take 6 – 7 Days to get at the top).
5. Shira Route | The Best Route to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
The trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro using Shira Route is a remote and a beautiful path
where you may come across fewer crowds, as it’s well suited to those with prior backpacking
experience and a high level of fitness. The trail of Shira Route begins near Shira Ridge. This route
is almost similar to the Lemosho route. However, the Shira route was the original route and
Lemosho is the improved variation.
The Shira trail is one of the two longer Kilimanjaro climb routes that start on the western side.
(The other route starting here is the Lemosho Route.) Those routes both cross the Shira Plateau
before joining the Machame Route near the “Lava Tower”.
Although Shira Possess a diverse and beautifully scenic route, it is less favourable than Lemosho
due to the relatively high altitude of the starting point of Shira. Hikers can experience little altitude
sickness symptoms on the first day while camping on 11,800 feet higher.
6. Umbwe Route – Hardest route on Kilimanjaro
All routes are suitable for trekking. It depends on your preference and focus. We offer free quote
consultation from start to finish. In our recommendation ( use the best one such as Machame Route,
Marangu, and Lemosho). The Umbwe Route is the least used and least crowded route to the
mountain, as it is steep, constant and straight to climb the top. The route is mostly avoided since
the ascent profile does not give hikers much time to adjust to the altitude. As the success rate is
low, normally seven days is recommended but the route takes six days minimum to complete.
The Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach
and its the most challenging route on Mt Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe
route is a short, steep and direct climb. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on
Kilimanjaro.
The descent is through Mweka, which is on the south-east side of the mountain. Umbwe is not as
scenically varied as Machame, Lemosho and Shira.
7. Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route
The Northern Circuit Route is the longest route on Kilimanjaro, a nine day trip initially ascending
Lemosho route on the western side of the mountain up onto the Shira Plateau before reaching the
Lava Tower, then heading north and circumnavigating the main summit massif in a clockwise
direction and joining up with the Rongai route. The summit is then climbed from the eastern side
of the mountain and the descent is straight down via the southern Mweka route.
Understandably this is also known as the Grand Traverse or the 360 Route and offers the complete
Kilimanjaro experience in terms of all the habitats and the views of the mountain from all sides.
The longer journey has excellent acclimatisation and stunning scenery with views across the
southern flanks, western forests, the northern plains to the Kenyan border and the arid eastern
slopes. The paths are comparatively quiet and less used.
Also the altitude gain each day is less than on other routes, with a gentle gradient until reaching
Kikelewa or Third Caves camp, therefore over nine days the likelihood of altitude sickness is
significantly less. Yet the overall length of the route is 96 kilometres, not much more than the other
routes. An alternate route which summits directly up the northern slopes from School Hut is about
79 kilometres.
Being more expensive, the Northern Circuit is the least visited but in many respects it’s the best
option for climbing Kilimanjaro without the crowds.
Kilimanjaro Faq’s – Frequently Asked Questions About Kilimanjaro Climb.
 Do you need a permit to climb Kilimanjaro?
Yes. All hikes or treks on Mount Kilimanjaro can only be completed with a licensed guide.
Depending on what route you take, the assistance of porters may also be included in your tour
price.
 Should I climb Mt Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro is an achievement many hikers, athletes, and nature lovers have set their eyes on. But
towering 19,341 feet, with a nearly 50% fail rate, reaching the peak takes a hefty amount of work
against significant odds. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is absolutely worth it.
 How expensive is climbing Kilimanjaro?
The average cost to climb Kilimanjaro is $2300 to $10000, the price varies from cheap, budget
operators to large Western travel agents selling outsourced climbs at an inflated price. There are
various, unavoidable fixed costs to any tour operator and if a climb seems too cheap, you’ve got
to ask yourself why.
 When should I climb Kilimanjaro?
Guidebooks suggest climbing Kilimanjaro in January-February or August-September, when

Climbing in March or October, just before each of two rainy seasons, is the best hedge to avoid
both crowds and foul weather.
 Do you need oxygen to climb Kilimanjaro?

climb Kilimanjaro or reach the summit. To reach to the summit you use the acclimatization method
of walking slowly “pole pole” climb high, sleep low.
 How many miles is Kilimanjaro hike?
The number of miles to hike Mount Kilimanjaro varies according to the route you pick. Umbwe is
the shortest route, but also the steepest. It measures 23 miles (37 kilometers). The longest route is

 How much do you tip on Kilimanjaro?
Recommending tipping amounts for Kilimanjaro climbs are the same no matter what route you

guide; $10-$15 for the chef; and $10-$12 for each porter.
 How do you climb Kilimanjaro on a budget?
High park fees and logistical costs mean there is no such thing as a cheap Kilimanjaro climb. The
best way to keep down costs is to form or join a group of four or more like-minded hikers, and to
stick to the Marangu Route, which is more popular and busy than the other options, but also less
logistically complicated.
 How do I book Kilimanjaro?
You can book by clicking ‘book now’ – and pay a registration deposit to secure your Kilimanjaro
place. Prices are based on twin-share accommodation, and single supplements are available.
 How much training do you need to climb Kilimanjaro?
Most people will need to train specifically for climbing Kilimanjaro for at least three to four
months. During your training, you will need to progressively ramp up your hike time, distance,
and elevation gain (at roughly 10% per week) to safely and effectively build your trekking-specific
conditioning.
 Can asthmatics climb Kilimanjaro?
You can Climb Kilimanjaro with Asthma, if you get the clearance certificate of fitness from your

inhaler warm and rub it for two minutes with your palms before inhaling on the high altitude.
 How much can porters carry on Kilimanjaro?
The maximum weight that a porter should carry is 20kg. This is the official Kilimanjaro park limit.
Packs should be weighed at park entrance gates to ensure that porters are not carrying too much.
Some of the weight will decrease over time as food supplies get used up.
 Is there an age limit to climb Kilimanjaro?
There is no maximum age limit to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but it is important that every hiker is
in good health. With increasing age, especially over the age of 60, health considerations become
more serious, and climbers should undergo a thorough medical check prior to attempting to climb
Kilimanjaro.
 Is Uhuru Peak the top of Kilimanjaro?
At 19 336 feet, the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is Africa’s highest peak and the
world’s tallest free-standing mountain. … Out of all the cones, it is the iconic Uhuru Peak on
Kibo’s crater rim that occupies the highest summit and makes Kilimanjaro a universal landmark
and an adventurer’s dream.
 Is climbing Kilimanjaro hard?

dealing with the altitude, however the summit night is extremely difficulty as this is the coldest,
windiest section of your adventure. Compared with Everest, Kilimanjaro is “easy”.
 Is there cell phone service on Mount Kilimanjaro?
The short answer is “Yes”. You may get a phone signal all the way through the summit. Over the
years, the mobile network coverage on Kilimanjaro has improved greatly. Nearly everyone who
treks nowadays brings Electronic Gadgets On Kilimanjaro, especially smartphones.
 What kind of animals are on Mount Kilimanjaro?

were over 70 years of age when they trekked up Kilimanjaro. That in our experience, older
climbers are just as likely to get to the top of Kilimanjaro as those of any other age group.
 Why is there snow on Mount Kilimanjaro?
Is there snow on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro? The long rainy season between March and May
is a result of the trade winds from the south-east. These southerly winds from the Indian Ocean
are laden with moisture, bringing rain to the lower slopes and snow on the top of Mount
Kilimanjaro summit.
 How do you charge your phone on Kilimanjaro?
There are no charging stations on Kilimanjaro. It is your responsibility to bring chargers and make
sure they are compatible. In addition to a charging device, we also recommend you bring spare
batteries for when your charger stops working. Batteries do not like the cold. Even no WiFi
network coverage.
 Is there WIFI on Kilimanjaro?
There is no wifi connection on the mountain. Cell service is very, very spotty. During each day,
there may only be one or two possibilities to make a call, text or email.
 Is Kilimanjaro snow free?
Yes, snowfall on Mt. Kilimanjaro is not a fuction of temperature, its a function of moisture. When
moist warm air from below the mountain get pushed up and over the cold mountain, the rapidly
cooling air can’t hold as much moisture as the warmer air, so you get rain and snow.

Due to a fewer crowd, scenic variety and high success rates, Lemosho is one of the most favoured routes in spite of it is a difficult and long route. Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro & Success Rates. What is the Lemosho Route Summit Success Rate? Due to its longer length profile, summit success rates on the Lemosho route are one of the highest on the mountain. Whilst there are no official statistics, the average success rate across all operators is 90% for the 8 day trek and a 85% success rate for the 7 day trek. The trek starts from the rain forest, crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau and the path combines with the Machame Route. The route holds a longer distance to cover the whole ecosystem as compared to other routes. Although is considered a difficult route, the extra days to trek the mountain make the acclimatization better. As the trail of this route begins from the rain forest, It is scenically considered the most varied and the most beautiful route. Perfect Route Lemosho route is a perfect route for those who are good with altitude acclimatization, and who are confident in their ability to walk over steeper paths for extended periods and want a lesser-used route. However, Lemosho is a little more expensive than the other routes as it offers more adventure. The Lemosho route is approximately 70 km/ 42 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience.
  • 3. From there, the temperatures will decrease as you move through Mount Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones. At the summit, Uhuru Point, the night time temperatures can range between 20 and -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to -29 degrees Celsius). Due to Mount Kilimanjaro’s great height, the mountain creates its own weather. Best Trekking Months. There are two distinct trekking seasons which constitute the best time to climb Kilimanjaro. They are January-March and June-October. January-March is generally colder than June-October and there is a higher probability of encountering snow on the summit. 2. Machame Route | The Most Popular Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. How long is the Machame Route? it takes almost 6 – 7 Days Trekking! It can be budget trekking or luxury one depending on your request. Machame Route is one of the most favoured routes for a number of hikers. The reason behind this is the highest success rate, great for acclimatization and this route also allows the climbers to naturally “walk high and sleep low”. The route offers great scenery, which changes every day as you walk higher. If summiting Kilimanjaro is your ultimate priority, then the Machame route will give you the best result. Machame route is undoubtedly the most crowded route since it holds a great success rate and is really attractive. To make your trekking more enjoyable, we make sure all our groups to hit the trail early and get ahead of the crowds. Our porters will be there before you reach and will welcome you with a nice hot drink and snacks. Whiskey Route Even though the Machame route can be conquered over 6 days, normally 7 days is recommended for this. The extra days can make a huge difference to the success rate as it improves the acclimatization and allows you to submit easily. The Machame Route is known as the “Whiskey Route” in comparison to Marangu’s “Coca Cola Route”. This is because Machame is a more difficult route, and does not have sleeping huts for accommodation like Marangu Route. Machame is the most popular and challenging route when
  • 4. considering to get to the Kilimanjaro mountain with the best scenic views. The trek starts in the south-west area of the mountain at Machame Gate. The route takings six days minimum to thorough, although you can trek Kilimanjaro via Machame in 7 days. The descent is down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain. The best route to climb Kilimanjaro Machame Route is one of the best options for climbing Kilimanjaro and reputed to have the highest success rate. This scenic route offers a longer period for acclimatization and takes different routes up and down the mountain so you don’t do any backtracking over the same terrain. It features a tented camping experience as opposed to the Marangu Route which makes use of an extensive mountain hut system. What are the routes up Kilimanjaro? Here is a brief overview of the seven routes;  Marangu Route – The Tourist Route.  Northern Circuit Route – The longest route take 8-9 Day Since the slope in the west and descent depressed the north, Machame provides countless views of Kilimanjaro. Furthermore, Machame stopovers fabulous places such as Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Lava Tower. 3. Marangu Route | Sleep in Huts on Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route, it’s the easiest route to get at the top of the mountain. (how long does it take Marangu Route to reach the peak? (Always it take 5 – 6 Days to reach Gilman point/ Uhuru peak.)
  • 5. Marangu route is the most popular route on the mountain. It is the only route that offers sleeping huts with drinks like Coca-Cola on the way. The accommodation along the route offers a dining hall and bunk beds, well equipped with mattresses and pillows. It is also cheaper to climb, due to the close proximity of the gate to Moshi. The descent is through the same path, contributing to Marangu’s cramped feeling. Scenically, Marangu is not that much attractive as compared to other routes. However, the trek is through the trail of the rainforest. Still, it offers great views of the Mawenzi. Marangu is a good choice for the hikers, who are less confident about their ability to hike over steeper paths. Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is the only route which offers residence style of accommodation to visitors. So book your tour to Kilimanjaro Marangu today. The Trekker will ascent and descent through the same trail experiencing 5 and 6 Days Hiking. 4. Rongai Route Kilimanjaro- 95% Summit Success Rate. The Rongai Route is the only route that connects Kilimanjaro from the north and is close to Kenyan border. The ascent profile of Rongai Route is very similar to that of Marangu. It is one of Kilimanjaro’s easier routes to the summit as the climb to the top is gradual and steady. Unlike Marangu, this route experiences fewer crowds and passes through remote wilderness areas. It is probably the only route where you can witness the wildlife in the first days of acclimatization. The route connects Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the mountain, alongside the border between Tanzania and Kenya. Holding a sense of perfect wilderness, it offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching from the north. The climbing high and sleeping low principle is not applicable here due to the topography of the route. Hikers may suffer from altitude sickness as compared to other routes.
  • 6. Kilimanjaro Route is considered to be less crowded with high summit rates and gentle incline and sense of unspoilt wilderness. High crowded Route  The only the northern approach to Kilimanjaro  Offers a true wilderness experience on the early stages of the climb  Very tough final summit night from the north  Fewer acclimatization opportunities  Less scenic and flat than other routes Also known as the Nalemuru route. Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes, Rongai makes up for this by passing through true wilderness areas for days before joining the Marangu route at Kibo camp. Rongai is a moderately difficult route and is highly recommended, especially for those with less backpacking experience. There are different options to complete the climb in 5, 6, or 7 days. ( Take 6 – 7 Days to get at the top). 5. Shira Route | The Best Route to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro using Shira Route is a remote and a beautiful path where you may come across fewer crowds, as it’s well suited to those with prior backpacking experience and a high level of fitness. The trail of Shira Route begins near Shira Ridge. This route is almost similar to the Lemosho route. However, the Shira route was the original route and Lemosho is the improved variation. The Shira trail is one of the two longer Kilimanjaro climb routes that start on the western side. (The other route starting here is the Lemosho Route.) Those routes both cross the Shira Plateau before joining the Machame Route near the “Lava Tower”. Although Shira Possess a diverse and beautifully scenic route, it is less favourable than Lemosho due to the relatively high altitude of the starting point of Shira. Hikers can experience little altitude sickness symptoms on the first day while camping on 11,800 feet higher.
  • 7. 6. Umbwe Route – Hardest route on Kilimanjaro All routes are suitable for trekking. It depends on your preference and focus. We offer free quote consultation from start to finish. In our recommendation ( use the best one such as Machame Route, Marangu, and Lemosho). The Umbwe Route is the least used and least crowded route to the mountain, as it is steep, constant and straight to climb the top. The route is mostly avoided since the ascent profile does not give hikers much time to adjust to the altitude. As the success rate is low, normally seven days is recommended but the route takes six days minimum to complete. The Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach and its the most challenging route on Mt Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. The descent is through Mweka, which is on the south-east side of the mountain. Umbwe is not as scenically varied as Machame, Lemosho and Shira. 7. Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route The Northern Circuit Route is the longest route on Kilimanjaro, a nine day trip initially ascending Lemosho route on the western side of the mountain up onto the Shira Plateau before reaching the Lava Tower, then heading north and circumnavigating the main summit massif in a clockwise direction and joining up with the Rongai route. The summit is then climbed from the eastern side of the mountain and the descent is straight down via the southern Mweka route. Understandably this is also known as the Grand Traverse or the 360 Route and offers the complete Kilimanjaro experience in terms of all the habitats and the views of the mountain from all sides. The longer journey has excellent acclimatisation and stunning scenery with views across the southern flanks, western forests, the northern plains to the Kenyan border and the arid eastern slopes. The paths are comparatively quiet and less used. Also the altitude gain each day is less than on other routes, with a gentle gradient until reaching Kikelewa or Third Caves camp, therefore over nine days the likelihood of altitude sickness is significantly less. Yet the overall length of the route is 96 kilometres, not much more than the other
  • 8. routes. An alternate route which summits directly up the northern slopes from School Hut is about 79 kilometres. Being more expensive, the Northern Circuit is the least visited but in many respects it’s the best option for climbing Kilimanjaro without the crowds.
