John 2:1-11
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus
and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus
said to him, “They have no wine.” [And] Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect
me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now
there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty
gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told
them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter
tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers
who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone
serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept
the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so
revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

What has happened here is better than what
happened before: The Gospel is better than the
Law; Jesus is better than the O. T.

5. Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in
Galilee
This is the 1st of 7 signs pointing to Jesus’ own
resurrection
and so revealed his glory,
To see his glory is to see who Jesus really is
and his disciples began to believe in him.
The disciples were already following him, this is
more, to believe Jesus is the Word become flesh
8
Breaking it down
There is more going on:
John answered and said, “You yourselves can
testify that I said [that] I am not the Messiah, but
that I was sent before him. The one who has the
bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who
stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly at the
bridegroom’s voice.” (Jn. 3:27-29)
This means if J Bap is the best man; then Jesus is the
Bridegroom. Meaning that the head waiter says to
JESUS: “Everyone serves good wine first, and then
when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you
have kept the good wine until now.”

What the CCC says about Jesus at Cana
486 The Father’s only Son, conceived as man in the womb of
the
Virgin Mary, is “Christ,” that is to say, anointed by the Holy
Spirit, from
the beginning of his human existence, though the manifestation
of this
fact takes place only progressively: to the shepherds, to the
magi, to
John the Baptist, to the disciples. Thus the whole life of Jesus
Christ
will make manifest “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with
the Holy
Spirit and with power.”
1335 The miracles of the multiplication of the loaves, when the
Lord
says the blessing, breaks and distributes the loaves through his
disciples to feed the multitude, prefigure the superabundance of
this
unique bread of his Eucharist. The sign of water turned into
wine at
Cana already announces the Hour of Jesus’ glorification. It
makes
manifest the fulfillment of the wedding feast in the Father’s
kingdom,
where the faithful will drink the new wine that has become the
Blood of
Christ.
10
7. What the CCC says about Mary at Cana
495 Called in the Gospels “the mother of Jesus,” Mary is
acclaimed by
Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the
birth of her
son, as “the mother of my Lord.” In fact, the One whom she
conceived as
man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to
the flesh,
was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second person
of the
Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly
“Mother of
God” (Theotokos).
2618 The Gospel reveals to us how Mary prays and intercedes
in faith. At
Cana, the mother of Jesus asks her son for the needs of a
wedding feast;
this is the sign of another feast—that of the wedding of the
Lamb where he
gives his body and blood at the request of the Church, his Bride.
It is at
the hour of the New Covenant, at the foot of the cross, that
Mary is heard
as the Woman, the new Eve, the true “Mother of all the living.”
11
What the CCC says about Marriage at Cana
8. 1613 On the threshold of his public life
Jesus performs his first sign—at his
mother’s request—during a wedding feast.
The Church attaches great importance to
Jesus’ presence at the wedding at Cana.
She sees in it the confirmation of the
goodness of marriage and the
proclamation that thenceforth marriage will
be an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence.
12
Cana and our Redemption
This sign of Jesus’ Glory applies to our Redemption in this way:
Cana is the wedding of Christ courting us to become his bride;
Cana is the first sign of Eucharist - Water to wine then wine to
Blood
Cana is the reality of Mary’s intercession for us
Cana points to the Church as the Bride of Christ; to the
Eucharist as the
celebration of our union with Christ; and our participation in
the Prayers of
Mary and the Saints as “be watchful with all perseverance and
supplication for
all the holy ones” (Eph 6:18)

9. Intro to Unit 3 & Covenant
How the Covenants Begin to Heal the Effects of Sin
1
Overview
In this presentation we will look at:
An overview of the unit;
Covenant in the Ancient World and the uniqueness of the
Hebrew Covenant;
Creation and Sin Stories as showing the need for a Covenant;
Covenant is implicit in Creation;
The first explicit covenant is with Noah;
The Covenant with Abraham
2
Unit 3 Unit 3 focuses on the Old Testament Covenants
as found in chapters 3 and 4 of the textbook:
Creation; Noah; Abraham; Sinai; and
David
Each Covenant builds on the one before it.
10. And the word covenant is also translated
as testament
We will also look at the Exile in Babylon to
see how the Jewish understanding of
Covenant included a Messiah
The Unit will end with an examination of
the incarnation and Mary’s perpetual
virginity
3
Covenant in the Ancient World
The Covenants
Not one but many
Testament is a synonym for covenant
The textbook reminds us that:
People did not enter a Covenant lightly.
A Covenant was not an ‘If Agreement’.
They ‘cut’ a covenant. Parties ‘cutting the
covenant’ then walked between the animals.
[This action declared], ‘Let the same
happen to me if I break this Covenant.’
Thus a Covenant was an irrevocable
‘commitment.’
4
11. Covenant in the Ancient World
A Covenant was an agreement between two or
more people
In the ancient world, a covenant was an
agreement for:
Business, Marriage, and any social contract
Government between King and People
A Covenant listed the obligations for each
member
Rules or laws measured how to act
A god was often called to witness the covenant
5
The Uniqueness of the Hebrew Covenant
Israel’s covenant was unique
God initiated the covenant and would be
their King
This is the foundation for understanding
Israel’s covenant with God.
“I will be your God and you will be my
people” (Ex 6:7; Lev 26:12; Rev 21:3)
6
12. Creation & Sin Stories show why a Covenant is needed
God’s creative act is that He gives each thing an
independent existence and sustains all things in
existence.
This mystery of the intimacy of God and His
otherness (not a thing in creation) is implicitly
present in creation.
The sin stories showed that the world was
“Torahless”: what is implicit must become
explicit. (Col 1:26)
What is implicit in creation will be build upon
until the New Covenant of the Incarnation and
Paschal Mystery.
7
Covenant is Implicit in Creation
Providence is the implicit covenant with creation
In His providence, God does two things:
Allows a thing to act by its nature;
Leads those with a rational nature.
We are designed to seek by our nature, by our
existence, what we do not know. “He made
from one the whole human race, so that people
might seek God, even perhaps grope for him
13. and find him, though indeed he is not far from
any one of us. For ‘In him we live and move and
have our being,’” (Acts 17:26-28)
8
The first Explicit Covenant is with Noah
Adam and Eve fear God and God promises a Messiah
Cain is fearful as an outlaw and God protects him
Noah is about people being Torahless (Gen 6:11)
The covenant with Noah is semi-explicit
God promises all creation that God will not
destroy evil because of the good
Babel is about confused people trying to replace God
Each sin story shows we do not know how to walk with
God; we need rules or someone to teach us how
Noah showed that even the righteous fall.
We need God to teach us how to walk with God.
Thus the creation and sin stories lay the foundation for
the rest of Scripture and our life of faith.
9
Catechism Quotes on the Creation & Sin Stories
289 Among all the Scriptural texts about creation, the first three
chapters of Genesis occupy a unique place. From a literary
standpoint these texts may have had
14. diverse sources. The inspired authors have placed them at the
beginning of Scripture to express in their solemn language the
truths of creation—its origin and its
end in God, its order and goodness, the vocation of man, and
finally the drama of sin and the hope of salvation. Read in the
light of Christ, within the unity of
Sacred Scripture and in the living Tradition of the Church, these
texts remain the principal source for catechesis on the mysteries
of the “beginning”: creation, fall,
and promise of salvation.
385 The revelation of divine love in Christ manifested at the
same time the extent of evil and the superabundance of grace.
We must therefore approach the question
of the origin of evil by fixing the eyes of our faith on him who
alone is its conqueror.
389 The doctrine of original sin is, so to speak, the “reverse
side” of the Good News that Jesus is the Savior of all men, that
all need salvation, and that salvation is
offered to all through Christ. The Church, which has the mind
of Christ, knows very well that we cannot tamper with the
revelation of original sin without
undermining the mystery of Christ.
How to read the account of the Fall
390 The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative
language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at
the beginning of the history of man.
Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of
human history is marked by the original fault freely committed
by our first parents.
10
15. The Covenant with Abraham
The many covenants rest on the Abrahamic covenant--to walk
with God
What it means to walk with God develops in the Hebrew
understanding (thus the many covenants)
Abraham--changed from Abram - Walks with God (12:1-4 &
17:1)
God promises descendants, a people, and that all people will
find
blessing (12:3)
God makes the covenant with Abram (Gen 15:1-18)
God promises Abram an heir--stars
Abram puts his faith in God--righteousness
Split animals--sign of a covenant, may this happen to me
if the covenant is broken
God passes through the fire
Abram is in a sleep
Like Adam at the creation of Eve
Something new is being created--Covenant
Like creation, from darkness to light
11
The Covenant with Abraham
Genesis 22
Take your son Isaac, whom you love
16. Three days to the Mount
Later Rabbis thought this was Zion
The Son carries the wood for the sacrifice
Child sacrifice is held as an
abomination because God stops
Abraham
12
Covenant Summary
Covenants were very serious, they were cut
Israel’s Covenant with God is unparalleled in the Ancient World
The implicit Covenant with creation grows to become explicit in
Noah
Abraham is a Covenant for all nations to find blessing
These Covenants will continue to be built on until the New and
Eternal Covenant
is established in Christ

Final Project The Mission of Jesus Christ (The Paschal
Mystery)
17. This project is worth 15% of your grade (240 points). It is both
an individual project and a small group project. It is divided
into two parts: 1st a Google Slide presentation; and 2nd an
individual paper.
This project is to help you recall the material covered this
semester and begin to review for the final. Therefore, the
material presented should be drawn out from the course itself.
Stay close to the material covered in class and you will be
helping yourself, your group, and the class review for the final.
You and your group will use one of the Covenants in the Old
Testament and one of the Luminous Mysteries to show how they
both ‘point to’ or ‘are fulfilled by’ Jesus’ Paschal Mystery.
1--Pick one of the Old Testament Covenants from Unit 3
(Presentations will be in the O. T. order):
Abraham and the Covenant (Gen. 15) Moses and the
Sinai Covenant (Ex. 19-20)
Joshua and the Covenant (Jos 24:13-28) David and the
Covenant (2 Sam 7:8-17)
Elijah and the Priests of Baal (1 Kings 18) Elijah and at
Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19)
Suffering Servant songs (4 Songs in Isaiah) The Exile
and the Covenant (Ezek 2:1-3:4 or 37:1-14)
Jonah and the Covenant (Jonah; Jer. 51:34; Is. 42:6) The
Expectations of the Messiah (many)
2--Pick one of the Luminous Mysteries from Unit 4:
The Baptism of Jesus The Wedding at Cana
The Proclamation of the Kingdom
The Transfiguration The Institution of the Eucharist
3--Show how the O.T. Covenant and the Luminous Mystery
point to Jesus’ Paschal Mystery (death & resurrection).
18. The whole group is required to be actively participating in the
presentation. Both the preparation and the presenting. The
individual paper is not presented; but will help you understand
the theme so you can write and present well.
Google Slide Presentation (160 Points)
The Slide Presentation Itself:
Presents your theme accurately and is based on the material
covered in class
Has Scripture Quotes, Catechism Quotes, and Pictures
relevant to the theme (and required-note the plural)
I will check how much work each person did - Ballance -
no real editing then no presenting
There is no sound effects or music or videos in the
Presentation

Elijah at Mount Horeb
Elijah at Mount Horeb
According to 1st kings 19, Ahab told jezebel everything that
Elijah had done including how he killed the Baal prophets using
a sword.
Jezebel was not happy and so she sent a message to Elijah
saying she would kill her soon the same way he killed the
prophets. Elijah was afraid of the news and so he ran to Mount
Horeb.
Faith Trial: Jezebel’s threat on killing Elijah
Jezebel promised Elijah that she could take his life. she even
swore to her gods that she would kill Elijah. Jezebel promised
to kill Elijah the following day and that she would make him
just as the dead prophets.
Faith trial: Jezebel’s threat on killing Elijah
Jezebel promised Elijah that she could take his life. she even
swore to her gods that she would kill Elijah. Jezebel promised
20. to kill Elijah the following day and that she would make him
just as the dead prophets.
Elijah moving to Mount Horeb
Elijah moved to Mount Horeb to save his life from being killed
by Jezebel.
As he was on his journey, he left his servant at Beersheba’s
house. (1st kings 19:3)
He walked for a full day to get into the wilderness.(1st kings
19:4)
Elijah giving up
At first Elijah wished to die since He was giving up on life and
he felt like God was ignoring him.
Thereafter, he came across a hiding place where he sat under a
tree.
Appearance of the Angel
During the tough times that Elijah went through, the Angel
appeared to him and woke him up. (1st kings 19: 5)
At that same time, the Angel offered food in form of cake and
water. (1st kings 19:6)
Later on, Elijah went into the cave and started praying when the
lord asked him what he wanted and he said Israel had forsaken
God’s word, Israel wants to get rid of him and he’s the only
faithful servant of God, and Israel had lost respect for God’s
alters. (1st kings 19:10)
21. God’s vice to Elijah
As Elijah was in the cave, God told him to go and stand upon
Mount Horeb.
During that moment, there was power in form of fire,
earthquake, and a strong wind.
A renewed commission
God wanted Elijah to accomplish several tasks. He wanted
Elijah to anoint Elisha as a prophet.
He also wanted him to anoint Hazael to be the king of Syria.
Elijah went extremes to do what God commanded him to do.
God chose him despite his inconsistencies.
The baptism of Jesus Christ
Jesus went to Jordan from Galilee for him to be baptized.
(Mathew 3: 13)
He was baptized by John the Baptist. (Mathew 3:14
After the baptism of Jesus, as He walked out of the water He
saw the spirit of God descending in form of a dove and shining
towards Him.
According to the Acts 2:38, the Bible clearly states that every
one should repent and be baptized for it creates forgiveness of
sins.
The verse encourages that when people are baptized they
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
22. How they point to Jesus
Death
When Ahab was told everything that Elijah had done she
Wanted to revenge by also killing Elijah which made Elijah to
move to Mount Horeb. When at Mount Horeb, he almost gave
up and prayed for death to come his way but God sent Angels
that took care of him. Additionally, God appeared to him and
told him the tasks that he was supposed to fulfil.
The baptism of Jesus indicates that the wages of sin is death and
for one to fully receive the gift of the Holy spirit, he or she
must repent through baptism.
Resurrection
The incidence of Elijah at Mount Horeb that point to the
resurrection is Elijah who seems to give up in God’s ministry
but then on His journey he receives comfort and help from the
Angels and also God appears to him who gives him tasks that he
should assign Men of God.
The baptism of Jesus Christ connects to resurrection because
when Jesus is baptized a dove descends from heaven which is a
sign of new life and energy that should be used in preaching
God’s message through tenderness and love. (Luke 4:18)
