2. The music video was released on the 26th of
February 2016. Colours is Halsey's fourth single
and is from her debut album Badlands. The
music video is set at a 1950's style prep school
and the story of the video doesn't go the way it is
expected.
3. Goodwin's theory of there being a relationship between
lyrics and visuals can be applied to this music video
because the music video tells the story of the lyrics.
You think that the main character (the singer) is in love
with the guy her age but this is contradicting the lyrics
but then it turns out to be his dad that she loves which
amplifies the lyrics.
4. Goodwin's theory of the demands of the record label can be
applied to this music video because there is a lot of shots of the
artist and a lot of close ups of her. The music video has a lot of
shots of her getting dressed up, doing her makeup, not wearing
lots of clothes and being filmed from angles that could be
applied to Goodwin's theory of the notion of looking.
The music video has lots of close up shots of her younger co lead because he is a famous
actor who stars in a popular TV show so Goodwin' s theory of demands of the record label
applies here.
5. The mise en scene in the video are the settings that create the
visuals that fit the lyrics. A lot of the video is set in a school and
show the main character and her friends looking at a guy. The
screen bellows suggests to the audience that the song is about
the guy but at this point the visuals are contradicting the lyrics.
The costumes in the video are all used to create a type of
setting, this is done through the use of old style school uniforms,
tennis uniforms and the big skirt style dress she wears.
6. In the video the visuals show a potential relationship
forming between her mum and his dad as well as them two.
This is shown through a series of edited visuals of the four
of them doing activities together before it is revealed that
she actually likes the dad and then after it is revealed that
she likes the dad, some of the same visuals are shown
again this time showing how she looks at the dad.
Goodwin's theory of there being a relationship between
lyrics and visuals can be applied here because the visuals
contradict and amplify the lyrics in different parts of the
video.
7. Different camera angles are used to make a reveal more
dramatics, for example this low angle shot of polaroid's suggest
something is going to happen because she is in such a rush to
pick them up and clearly doesn't want him to see the photos.
The camera then changes to a previous shot where she is
looking through a window then back to him to see his reaction to
the polaroid's and the shows her looking through the window and
then more visuals of the dad are shown.
8. 'Everything is grey' lyric is sang in the song at the same time the polaroid of
the dad is shown on screen, this can be related back to the Goodwin theory
that there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals because the plot
twist was revealed as it was in the song lyrics.
After this shot a series of previous used visuals are used but this time shown from
a different angle to show a different perspective. This time the camera angles
show her looking at the dad in the way the audience thought she was looking at
the son.
