Ncaa Pros And Cons
The National Collegiate Athletic Association, better known as the acronym NCAA, was formed in
1906 as the IAAUS, which stands for Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, then
changed to its current name the NCAA in 1910. In 1973 the current three–division setup of
Divisions I, II, and III was adopted by the NCAA, and they are currently governed by the NCAA
president Mark Emmert. Under this new format Divisions, I and II can offer scholarships to athletes
for playing sports but Divisions III may not offer any athletic scholarships. In 1983, the 75th
Convention approved an expansion for woman's athletic program services and started the push for
woman's championships program. There are 23 men, women, and coeducational sanctioned ... Show

Currently the NCAA has media rights with CBS Sports, CBS Sports Networks, ESPN, ESPN Plus,
and Turner Sports for coverage of its 88 championships. From 1988 to 2013, Electronic Arts had a
license to develop college sports video games but has since withdrawn their privileges due to a
series of lawsuits involving the use of player likenesses in the video games. In order to be an
eligible student athlete in their freshman year the NCAA states that a student must met three
requirements: graduate from high school, complete the minimum required academic courses, and
have a qualifying grade–point average and SAT or ACT scores. All schools governed under the
NCAA agree to follow their constitution and bylaws under the notion that they will be punished if
there is a failure to uphold that. When a school is found guilty of more than one violation of the
NCAA's rules, they are considered to exhibit "lack of institutional control". If the school is found
guilty of egregious misconduct, the NCAA has the power to ban the school from participating in a
particular sport, which is known as the "Death Penalty. Coaches, Athletic directors, and athletic
support staff can be disallowed from working for an NCAA member school without their
permission; this is known as

The NCAA Controversy
The NCAA
480,000 athletes; 19,000 teams; 3 divisions; 1 association (NCAA, n.d.) This is a description of the
NCAA today. In the early 1900's, President Roosevelt got together with Harvard, Princeton and Yale
to ban the flying wedge (a very dangerous play in football that caused 18 deaths the previous year.)
(Demars, 2016). This was the commencement of the National Collegiate Athletic Association,
formally known as the NCAA. The NCAA is an organization that was created to improve collegiate
sports, and while it has expanded and done so, there have been challenges and controversy along the
way.

The NCAA has expanded college athletics, created more female athletes/sports, and made a safer
activity. The NCAA has also shown their detriments through lack of oversight, internal abuse of the
system, and lots of controversy. The NCAA will endure overtime and hopefully continue to improve
college sports and address their controversy/negative impacts. Bibliography

Personally, I think there is a lot of problem with NCAA, at first I agree with the NCAA why they
don't want to pay the students athlete. Like the NCAAn says their student because they students they
shouldn't get pay like professional cause they still amateur, but the more I watch the video the more
my mind started to change. They call the student athletes armature because of that they can't get pay.
Another word, they saying their students if they pay them that would take away they tittle as
students and be professional not as students' athlete. But That confuse me a lot if they see them as

NCAA March Madness
In monumental clashes for the ages, both collegiate men and women's NCAA March Madness
tournaments have provided countless matches, unprecedented athleticism, and glorious victories
paired with heartbreaking defeats. Yet despite their similar structures, the two tournaments have
attained vastly different levels of recognition in the United States. With men's basketball, thousands
of Americans tune in every year to watch the upsets and Final Four games, drooling over perennial
powerhouses such as Duke University, University of Kentucky, and University of Kansas and
unknown underdogs like Butler University, Wichita State University, and Virginia Commonwealth
University as they all compete in titanic battles. Everyone from retirees to college students fill out
fantasy brackets yearly in volumes reaching millions, praying to have that lucky year where they

Sociology professor Michael Messner of the University of Southern California explains that the
media "actively constructs audiences that are likely to see the men's Final Four as a dramatic,
historic event that they simply "must" watch, while fans are likely to see the women's Final Four as
a nonevent or, at best, as just another game of the Men's Final Four" (Messner). Messner
emphasizes the differences in language, attention, and emotion in media coverage as the sources of
different representations and viewership. Professor Messner is not the only expert to contend that
purposeful sexism and subtle contrast in media representation are the causes of the inequality in
coverage. Others assert that we need "more women on television, in the news, and in front of our

The National Collegiate Athletic Association also known as the NCAA is one of the most popular
Athletic Associations in the entire nation that regulates over 1,281 universities, conferences, and

The NCAA is a non–profit association that brings in over 871.6 million dollars in revenue a year.
The NCAA also awards 89 national championships a year in football, basketball, softball,
gymnastics, swim and dive, soccer, and tennis to name a few. The NCAA's headquarters is located

NCAA as a Monopoly
After over a century of existence, the National Collegiate Athletic Association stands today as a
multi–million dollar organization, one of the largest and most successful organizations in the nation.
The NCAA is in charge of overlooking every college athletic competition in the United States.
Every year millions of fans watch NCAA organized games and follow the top prospects of every
sport. However, all schools and players involved with the NCAA are obligated to follow a strict set
of rules to be eligible to compete at the college level.
The NCAA holds college athletes specifically to a very strict set of rules. Under the NCAA all

Although students enjoy playing their own specific sports, they are doing it with millions of people
following their path and they are generating millions of dollars to the NCAA, they just are not
allowed to have any of it. Therefore, they can not be considered amateurs. In fact, these students
really are not even in college to get an education. In her blog Confessions of a Whistleblower, Mary
Willingham an academic advisor from the University of North Carolina, revealed that the athletes in
the most successful college teams are given paper classes to replace real classes. These paper classes
are classes that do not require students to attend class. Their only assignment is to turn in a paper at
the end of a semester and are 100 percent of the time graded A or B. A method used to keep students
eligible. Also, according to Ross Finkel and Martin Trevor in their documentary Schooled: The
Price of College Sports, players have one year contracts with the schools based only on athletics.
This means that even if a student–athlete had straight A's, they could lose their scholarship if they
were no longer competing on the field. Their education would be over. Finally, there is transfer rules
that restrict athletes from transferring from one four year University to another and play their first

NCAA Recruiting Issues
Once the proposal was shown, the NCAA council and the committee made all necessary changes;
they were then able to call for a special convention that same year in 1973 (Katz & Seifried 2014).
This time, Sherman proposed three legislative and three competitive divisions (Katz & Seifried
2014). The institutions would be able to pick a division without considering their football teams,
and then the College Football Committee would determine where the college football team should
fall and the institution would follow suit (Katz & Seifried 2014). He also proposed by 1975 that
there would be 39 national championships and 10 in each division (Katz & Seifried 2014). Once
brought to a vote, the results were much different: 366 were in favor and only 13 were not (Katz &
Seifried 2014). The birth of the three divisions we know of today was then officially born, but these

Recruiting can happen face–to–face contact, phone calls or through email. A contact can happen at
any time a college coach says more than hello during a face–to–face meeting with a student–athlete
off the college campus. An evaluation happens when a college coach observes a student–athlete
practicing or competing. A verbal commitment occurs when a student–athlete verbally agrees to
play sports for a college before he or she signs the National Letter of Intent. A verbal commitment is
not set in stone, so at any time the student–athlete or college can withdraw from the agreement.
When the student–athlete commits to attend a NCAA Division I, II, or III school, he or she signs a
National Letter of Intent, agreeing to attend that school for one academic year (NCAA Recruiting,
2015). These general recruiting guidelines apply despite other small differences between individual

The NCAA recognizes one of its core values as "the pursuit of excellence in both academics and
athletics" (NCAA Core Values). This shows that the NCAA is looking to benefit the students at all
costs. They want to include the coaching staff of universities in this core value, but much confusion
has been found between the NCAA and university athletic staff. This confusion has resulted in a
tension and conflict leading to a discussion on the steps of resolution that can be taken to put this
core value back into sights for both coaching staff and the NCAA.
To begin, the NCAA spends their time creating rules but fails to enforce them. One such rule
includes the twenty–hour rule that is continuously violated by coaches. Ray Joseph of Marist

The NCAA gives out two billion seven hundred thousand dollars in scholarships that can be gifted
to more than one hundred fifty thousand student–athletes (Scholarships). Although this is the case,
most student–athletes do not choose to compete professionally, but instead benefit from the
education they are receiving. Additionally, it may seem controversial that the "coaches decide who
receives a scholarship, the scholarship amount and whether it will be renewed" rather than the
NCAA who is providing the money for the scholarships (Scholarships). Furthermore, many students
can fit one coach's ideals for the team and will be completely wrong for another coach's. This being
said coaches are constantly being added and removed. For example, over the past fifteen years
Missouri University has had seventeen changes to the coaching staff while Florida has had sixty–
five changes to the coaching staff (SEC Coaching Turnover Rates From Past 15 Years are
Staggering). Since coaches have the most authority, many players are having their scholarships
rescinded due to a change in the coaching staff. For example, Doug Segrest, a writer for the
Birmingham News, interviewed Grayson Mullins, football player for Notre Dame, who was moved
from his original position as a quarterback to a wide receiver when Lou Holtz, Coach for Notre
Dame, was replaced by Steve Spurrier, who eventually rescinded Mullins scholarship because he
did not fit the ideal model (Segrest). This demonstrates, that scholarships are constantly held over a
players' head as to perform not only at the best of their ability but to the coaches' idealistic reality as
well. Overall, scholarships pose a large issue in college athletics and while they do provide
education to students that are harming in the long run as students are constantly at risk to lose them

NCAAAthletic Salaries In today's society many athletes are being advertised by their schools! This

(Solomon 1) In the NCAA there are many laws that prevent the athletes from doing certain things.
These laws are called the "Laws of Amateurism". In general, amateurism requirements do not allow
salary for participating in athletics, or prize money above actual or necessary expenses (NCAA
Center). However Judge Claudia Wilken partially granted class action status in a lawsuit concerning
the use of college athletes' names and likenesses. U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled the
plaintiffs, including former and current Division I men's basketball players and Football Bowl
Subdivision players, will be allowed to challenge the NCAA's current restrictions on what athletes
might receive in exchange for playing sports. The ruling sets up the prospect of a fundamental
change in scholarship rules and the concept of amateurism (Berkowitz 3). This would help athletes
to be able to fight for the compensated pay. Another reason athletes should get deferred payments is
because, it could eliminate the problem of "Under the Table Money" being taken. "Under the Table

Dr. Leslie Wills
Abstract
A few years ago, there was much discussion relating to the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) and those units responsible for instituting student–athlete and athletic department policy.
This purpose of this paper is to discuss the ethical misconduct that occurred at Penn State, Ohio
State and the University of Arkansas, and how the NCAA played a role in the wrongdoing. Coaches,
players, and administrators face mounting pressures brought on by the need to sell seats and win
games. In response, this type of pressure creates opportunities for offenses to take place. The first
component of the paper will be to determine the fundamental ways in which the ethics programs of
the NCAA failed to prevent the scandals at Penn State, Ohio State, and the University of Arkansas.
Once those measures are identified and discussed, the ways the NCAA leadership contributed to the
ethical violations of these schools will be discussed. The next element of the paper will predict the
key differences in the scandals that occurred at each school if an effective ethics program was
implemented. Next, the paper will suggest actions that the NCAA leadership should take to regain
the trust and confidence of the students and stakeholders. The last section will identify measures that

The Future of the NCAA College athletic programs are among the most popular sporting events in
America. With this rise in popularity, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and its
colleges have also seen a rise in revenue in recent years. In 2014, the NCAA made over 900 million
dollars in revenue. Some collegiate coaches, such as Kentucky's John Calipari, have yearly salaries
in the millions, not counting incentives and endorsement deals. While, clearly, money is being
made, NCAA regulations ban collegiate athletes from being paid. Many question this rule and argue
that athletes at the college level earn and deserve pay for play. The debate to pay or not to pay
college athletes rages on despite the latest court ruling supporting NCAA policies. Because colleges
and universities earn such a profit from sporting events, many fans feel it is only fair to distribute
some of the wealth to the players. Supporters of paying student athletes feel that these young men
and women should be fairly compensated for the time demanded of the athletes and the stress put on
the athletes, physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. Those in favor of paying college
athletes contend that athletic and academic work ethic at both high school and collegiate levels will
improve, as well as, fiscal responsibility in these young adults. The NCAA argues that paying

Up until now the NCAA was able to get away with keeping college athletes under the category of
"amateur" meaning that they would not share in the portion of the profits, as that would compromise
their amateur status. Recently, the NCAA was challenged with and lost a lawsuit (O'Bannon vs. the
NCAA) filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon. The court ruled, Requires that the
NCAA's caps on compensation must at least reflect the full cost of school attendance (rather than
merely tuition and supplies). The court also held that $5,000 trust funds would be acceptable, so
long as the revenue was distributed equally to all players on a team, but rejected direct
endorsements as inconsistent with the valid objectives of the NCAA."(Lemieux, 2014) This ruling
will have a big impact on the business model and structure of the NCAA going forward. According
to experts, "The impact of the ruling will not be radical in the short term as scholarships will
become more valuable and players will receive some indirect benefits from licensing of their names
and images. In the long run this ruling will eventually lead to the collapse of the NCAA's business
model as 'undermining' amateurism will undermine fan interest." (Lemieux, 2014) As mentioned in
the statement the NCAA will have to make changes to its amateur rules,

The use of illegal substances is rapidly increasing in the college sports due to the expansion of
supplements used by athletes that are being banned. In a study done, athletes were asked if illicit
drugs would negatively impact their performance. Majority of them responded "yes", their main
reasoning being; the effects of illicit drugs were both mental and physically damaging. Illicit drugs
come in many forms, but the testing procedures are all the same for any substance. There is almost
always a consequence with the use of prohibited substances. Drug testing is appropriate to help
ensure the safety of student athletes while they participate in intercollegiate contests. (Krotee, M

consent to participate in drug testing. This is a document that they must sign, which states that they
are subject to random drug test, they must comply or suffer the consequences of not participating.
There are many categorizes of drugs, such as; stimulants, which can induce temporary
improvements in both mental and physical function. Anabolic agents, which scored a 1.1% usagea

Paying College Athletes : Ncaa ( National Collegiate...
TJ White Ms. Heise Honors English III 14 May 2015 Paying College Athletes The NCAA (National
Collegiate Athletic Association) makes over $871 million dollars a year on college athletics. Some
studies estimate as much as one billion dollars each year. A college university can make anywhere
from several million dollars up to $120 million from their athletic programs. A college athlete gets
paid nothing and yet a majority of their time and schedule is dictated by the sport they play. In the
book Student Athlete's Guide to College, author Hillary Abramson says, "If you've gotten to the
college athletic level, you 're accustomed to making sacrifices to benefit your athletic career. In
college these sacrifices only get harder." (Abramson 8). In Dominic Alessi's 5 Reasons Why NCAA
Athletes Should be Paid, he points out that student athletes schedules are much harder than regular
students schedules. "By late afternoon they have already put in a 10 hour work day." (Alessi). Even
though they are considered student athletes, the NCAA actually has rules which allow the athletes to
miss class in order to fulfill their team obligations. College athletes should be paid because they
spend a majority of their time with their sport, many colleges in the NCAA make a large amount of
income from the sports programs, and it would help many athletes learn to be financially stable and
help them in the real world as only a small fraction of college athletes turn professional and make a

The relationship between a student–athlete and a college is contractual in nature. In Barile v.
University of Virginia an Ohio court clarified that this contractual relationship is particularly
applicable if a scholarship or financial aid is involved in the relationship. However, the student–
athletes are not in a direct contractual relationship with the NCAA. That contractual relationship
exists between the NCAA and its member institutions. Thus, the only contractual relationship
former student athletes have with the NCAA is as a third–party beneficiary. Generally, student–
athletes are not third party beneficiaries of the NCAA. However, Bloom v. NCAA clarified that a
student–athlete may have standing as a third–party beneficiary to the contractual relationship
between the NCAA and its member schools. Essentially, the court found that the NCAA and its

NCAA aAhletes and Pay
Should college student–athletes be paid has become a much debated topic. The incentive for a
student–athlete to play a college sport should not be for money, but for the love of the game. It has
been argued that colleges are making money and therefore the student–athlete should be
compensated. When contemplating college income from sporting events and memorabilia from
popular sports, such as football and basketball, it must not be forgotten that colleges do incur
tremendous expense for all their sports programs. If income from sports is the driving factor to pay
student–athletes, several major problems arise from such a decision. One problem is who gets a

There would be no rush to graduate because the student–athlete is receiving free education, housing
and meals as well as making money. College sports should be played for the love of the game, not
for the love of money. If the NCAA decided to pay college athletes, it would create more problems
than solutions. For example, if student–athletes are offered a salary, most likely the cost of school
tuition will go up because the money paid to the student–athletes must come from somewhere and
the revenue from sporting events and memorabilia will not be enough to cover all student–athlete
salaries as well as expenses to run all the college's sports programs. In addition, not all college
sports draw the same fan base and therefore, income is greatly varied between sports programs
which in turn will create an unfair balance when determining the salary for each student–athlete. All
student–athletes regardless of which sport they are participating would expect equal pay. If the
student–athletes are paid a salary, in addition to receiving a scholarship, which includes, tuition,
books, housing and meals, it would be grossly unfair to non–student–athletes because tuition costs
would be increased dramatically and ultimately be unattainable for the non–student–athlete. Without

There are several ethical issues in the news lately about the treatment college athletes are receiving
compared to the non–athletic students of universities. Is the practice of favoring athletes and
bending the rules in the favor of universities to enable the best college sports stars to play ethical?
Two major ethical issues that have been in the public eye as of late is cheating and grade tampering,
and recruiting tactics. Both of these actions are unethical, but it still isn't stopping universities

I don't know many guys my age who could refuse that situation. But in reality, those recruiting
tactics are not morally correct. Not only is it not fair to other schools looking for their next sports

that athletes, especially at larger universities across the country get special treatment in regards to
academic issues and lifestyle. Universities will go to any extent to protect their players from being
academically ineligible to play, and seems they will do anything to get the best recruits in the
country to give their team an advantage. It is hard for the NCAA to enforce strict rules, especially
academically because schools have academic freedom which enables universities to make their own
classroom policies. The NCAA asks, "If a certain institution permits grade changes for students up
through and even after the final exam, how do you hold athletes to a different standard?" In reality,
it is almost impossible to hold athletes to a different standard, and as long as this loop hole exists,
colleges will be using any method enticing athletes to come to their school and continue to play
through their college career, regardless of their academic status. It is unethical, but until NCAA
rules change, who can dictate these procedures are not allowed?

On my latest research of obtaining a search warrant you will notice that in many cases because a
search warrant grants law enforcement officers the right to search parts of personal space that are
not normally open to public view, the US Constitution and all state constitutions require probable
cause or a fair amount of certainty that a search is related to a crime or criminal investigation before
a judge may issue a warrant. Indeed, a search warrant for one item cannot be used for a broader
search of another item not stated in the warrant. In completing a search warrant, you need to show
that based on the circumstances it's reasonable to believe that a search will produce useful
information in solving a crime. Also with that being said there are many different factors and other
cases that deal with using a search warrants like for example Marcus vs. Search Warrant in his case
he had a magazine stand and the officers pretty much went over their

NCAA Supporting or Exploiting?
In recent years the question of college athletes being exploited or supported has arouse quite often.
When this situation comes up most people are quick to say they are obviously being supported for
the simple fact that they are getting to go to a university for free. However once you take a deeper
look into things, views and thoughts of this situation may change slightly if not totally. Last winter
NCAA president Mark Emmert was asked a simple question. If he thinks college athletes should or
ever will be paid? "We can never move to a place where we are paying players for playing sports for
us" (Miller). Those comments sparked something that will be debated for years to come. Are college
athletes being exploited? Are they getting all the things that they need and are working so hard for?
Or is it a supportive gesture?
The average college scholarship is worth about $25,000 dollars a year which is about $100,000
dollars for a student to go to school for all four year they are eligible(Hartnett). That is a good
amount of money but lets face it, rarely does any college athlete stay for their entire four years
eligibility. A $25,000 dollar scholarship might seem like a lot of money, but it really only covers
basics. It covers thousands of dollars in mysterious, unknown university fees, tuition, housing, a
meal–plan and multiple hundred–dollar textbooks. Some players, if they come from a low–income
household, get a few hundred dollars each semester from Pell Grants which

Ncaa Business Law : Ncaa Law
NCAA Business Law Since earlier this year a series of court rulings and decisions has begun to
change the landscape of armature college athletics. In early March, the National Labor Relation
Board in Chicago ruled that football players at Northwestern University are employees and
therefore have the right to unionize. In addition, in August, of this year, a federal judge ruled in
favor of a former UCLA Basketball star whose likeness was used in a video game. These rulings
have set the stage for more cases to be open up against the NCAA and its treatment of college
athletes. Along with this ligation the NCAA settled outside of court with college athletes who sued
them for damages from head injuries they suffered while playing. These ligations have also brought
to question about how it will affect requiting and players transferring from schools. Now on the
business law side, we have the question of tort regarding player's injuries and requiting. In addition,
we have the question of trademarks (using payer's likeness), legal capacity (player's unionizing and
signing contracts) and leaving employment (players transferring from schools). The first legal
concepts we will cover are Torts. By definition a tort is a civil wrong or wrongful act, whether
intentional or accidental, from which injury occurs to another. Now when dealing with torts the first
question that needs to be answer is a question of liability. There are: intentional liability, negligence
liability, and strict

It's shaping up to be a trying year for the NCAA as two former athletes have come forward in the
past week and filed a class action lawsuit against them for "academic fraud in its members schools'
athletic programs." While some think this couldn't get worse, from the numerous unacknowledged
complaints from over the last century, a large number of the student athletes on the receiving end of
less than stellar educations were African–American student athletes–especially in revenue–
producing sports like basketball and football.
The two athletes that have come to the front line of this debacle are former University of North
Carolina (UNC) football player, Devon Ramsay and basketball player Rashanda McCants. If that
last name sounds familiar, it should–she's the sister of the former men's basketball star Rashad
McCants of the Tar Heels and was drafted 14th overall his first NBA by the Minnesota
Timberwolves. Mr. McCants stands by his sister's lawsuit and is even testifying against not only the
NCAA, but also his alma mater. This isn't the first time Mr. McCants has put up a red flag against
his old college; in early June of 2014 he participated in an interview where he stated that he took
bogus classes and had tutors write his homework. His claims were shot down by all of his other
teammates from the 2005 team but McCants stood by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

NCAA Recruiting Analysis
College athletics have become huge business. Therefore, coaches are under pressure to sign the best
recruits. Jim Harbaugh went so far as having a sleepover at a recruit's house (Schwartz, 2016).
According to Remillard (2014), Texas A & M used a helicopter in their recruiting efforts (p. 7).
These two examples are within the NCAA recruiting rules. However, many programs violate the
rules every year to gain an advantage in recruiting. Unfortunately, many programs, like Louisville,
use sex or money to entice athletes to come to their program (ESPN, 2015).
Some programs are even using their uniforms as a recruiting tool (Crabtree, 2013). Our post–literate
culture is becoming more focused on images and quick messages. Recruiters must continue to
evolve their recruiting techniques in order to convince the best recruits to come to their program. In
a competitive field, coaches will use every advantage they can to land the top recruits. ... Show more

According to Remillard (2014) academics followed only coaches in importance to the recruit (p.

NCAA website, "the association's belief in student–athletes as students first is a foundational
principle" ("Frequently", 2015). Although, the NCAA's claim may be empty, as collegiate coaches,
it is important to prioritize academics even if no one else is doing it. It is the responsibility of the

With the rulebook being so outdated, many of the rules that are enforced and followed make very
little sense. In addition, often the rulings are based on ancient rules over what is actually right. What
is actually right appears to be done very little in many cases that involve NCAA decisions. The
NCAA has suspended or deemed ineligible countless athletes over questionable rules and violations.
The NCAA, which also has the power to issue sanctions to schools and programs over rules
violations, issued sanctions to one of the biggest Division I football programs in the country over a
questionable rules violation. The school provided students with recommended books for their
academic classes, but according to NCAA, the school may only allow scholarships to purchase
textbooks deemed required. This is an example of lacking common sense and failing to recognize
how obviously wrong a rule like this is. This particular penalty is essentially punishing a program

Furthermore, where should the money come from? Is it the responsibility of the school to pay these

how difficult it would be to change the college athletic system to compensate college athletes.
Regardless of what number of individuals feels that athletes ought not to be paid for their ability,
there is pretty much the same number of individuals whom feel they ought to. There are numerous
reasons why individuals think a student athlete ought to be adjusted. Some of those reasons

Paying NCAAAthletes Essay
Outline
Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to inform my audience about the issue of potentially paying
college athletes so that they may make an informed decision themselves.
Thesis: As the popularity, and revenue continues to grow in college sports, the debate will be taken
to new heights about whether or not college athletes are being exploited, and if they should be
compensated monetarily.
I. (C)The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) defines amateurism as, "The conviction
that people should participate in sports as a hobby (for the fun of it) rather than for money." The
NCAA mandates that all college athletes maintain this level of amateurism while in college,
however, college sports have never been more of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
b. Throw in all of the gear associated with being a Division I college athlete and you're looking at a
hefty amount of cash being invested in each athlete.
C. Obviously some colleges have higher budgets and higher amounts of athletes than others, so how
do you make sure you pay each athlete equally while still staying above the budget? You can't.
1. Trying to pay a football team alone could plunge a university underneath their budget with an
average of nearly 100 players per team.
2. On top of that, there are 28 more sports with athletes waiting to have their pockets filled with
cash.
3. And finally, it takes away funding for other important academic areas of the college.
Transition: The budget just simply isn't there for a university of any size to reasonably pay each and
every athlete so finally I will explain some different ways an NCAA athlete could possibly make
some money.
IV. There are plenty of ways an athlete could make money, but it would require some self marketing
and a little help from the NCAA.
A. A player could seek out additional sponsorships and advertising deals like a professional athlete.
1.The athlete isn't technically making money off their playing ability they're making the money
from the name on the back of their jersey.
B. Opposers of this idea would say that equality plays a factor here as well.
2. Not every athlete is as

NCAAAtheltics: Young Money Essay
To pay or not to pay, that is the question. This question, one of disparity, confronts the NCAA all the
time today. Football and basketball players generate billions of dollars in revenue for their schools
but do not receive any. College athletes cannot be paid because of the "no pay" rules and the
"Principle of Amateurism." The NCAA will not have to deal with as many rule violations and
scandals. Plus, the NCAA could still label an amateurism principle without actually crossing the line
with professionalism. Because athletes are focusing solely on sports and have no time to do
anything else, athletes need money to support themselves. Not only does the school acquire revenue

Shapiro also offered the players services that included entertainment, yacht rentals, paid vacations,
prostitutes, nightclubs, jewelry, and abortions. Not all of what he offered was right but he still
should have been allowed to pay the players bounties. The bounties he paid players caused him to
suffer in court the most. He was sentenced to a total of twenty years in federal prison. Also, at Ohio
State University, five players were suspended for five games for trading signed memorabilia for
cash and tattoos at a tattoo parlor. Because of the "no pay" rules, student athletes cannot receive any
pay from that sport or any form of future assistance. Should the "no pay" rules no longer be a factor,
the NCAA would not have to deal with as many scandals that involve the paying of athletes. The
only way to eliminate or greatly reduce the number of scandals is by implementing a change in the
NCAA Division I Manual.
Not only do the players play hard for the school, but they also have the potential to earn money
through commercial signings and endorsements by third party sponsors. The NCAA should lift the
"Principle of Amateurism" and establish a newer one that resembles the one of the Olympics. The
Olympics' amateur model resembles the NCAA's "Principle of Amateurism" except for the fact that
they do not have restrictions on commercial opportunities such as

College football and basketball generate more than the National Basketball Association, a total of

The NCAA must decide whether if it is a business or not. If the NCAA became a nonprofit
organization, then the association would have an argument against paying players. An article from
the Sport Journal, the author relates to Kahn's argument that the NCAA acts as if it's a cartel with
how it they go about their actions. According to his study, in 2005 a football player on draft boards
out of high school is worth $495,000 and a draft ready basketball player is worth more than $1.5
million to the NCAA! (Johnson, Dennis A). This mean that a scholarship player is losing money and
that their actual worth to the school is worth way more than the scholarship itself. That combine
with players receiving no compensation for their play in sports that have major revenue, and are also

everyone in the world watches it. In the 2017 Final Four NCAA Basketball Championship there was

Avid college basketball fans refer to it as NCAA March Madness. Because it is a one–and–done,
single elimination format, it's packed with excitement. Adding to the intrigue are the smaller
schools, known as Cinderella's, who endear themselves to the hearts of college basketball fans.
Former Ohio State University coach Harold Olsen initiated the idea back in 1939.
From what was originally an eight school tournament, the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has
ballooned to 68 Division I schools. Deciding who is worthy, from over 300 division I colleges, is a
difficult process. The final decision rests with the NCAA Selection Committee. Here is how that

This is one area that is frequently disputed. Occasionally, when a small conference school has a
remarkable season, but lose in their conference tournament, that school will bump a major or mid–
major school from consideration.
Big conference schools that have successful seasons are all but assured a spot in the tournament.
Committee members discuss strength of schedule statistics, wins against highly ranked opponents
and simple human feelings about which teams are more deserving.
As the actual selection of schools progresses, members use the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), to
weight teams according to season long productivity. The RPI index is also a prominent factor in the
final seeding. This is actually a very detailed formula.
The RPI includes the team's winning percentage, their opponents winning percentage and even the
opponents of their opponents winning percentage. This data is even further dissected into four
quadrants that consider 'good wins' and even 'bad losses'.
The final 64 teams are split into four regions. Teams are seeded from 1 to 16, and matched in
reverse order of their seed. The number one seed opens against the lowest seed, and so forth, with
the closest pairing being the #8 seed against the #9

Pros And Cons Of The NCAA
The NCAA is an easy organization to make fun of. The governing body of college sports loves to
wield its hammer of justice in the most uninformed, one–sided way as possible. That is true,
although, sometimes we forget about the difficult terrain it has to navigate.
In what will almost certainly end with Mark Emmert becoming a punching–bag to those who loathe
the collegiate athletic model, the NCAA is claiming that it can't mandate diversity hiring.
Let's start with the context.
In October, six members of Congress asked Emmert to address the status of a pledge the NCAA had
asked schools to sign last year in support of diversifying their hiring pools when jobs become
available. This was after Congress addressed its concerns over the majority of college coaches being
white males.
It seems like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

concerned about representational diversity of ethnic minorities and women in coaching and athletics

Here is where things get tricky and vernacular matters.
Lost in all the hatred the NCAA and Emmert receives is the fact that the organization is just an
extension of its university members. The NCAA isn't running college sports, it is overseeing it, on
behalf of the schools it represents. Or, more simply put, the actual "bosses" –– at least in the grand
scheme of things –– are the schools. Not the NCAA.
Emmert represents the schools. He is similar in his position as are those who oversee the NFL and
NBA. He's the face of the governing body, but he isn't the one making up the rules. He helps,
obviously, but he is meant to represent what the majority of universities want. If all schools wanted

College Athletes And Ncaa Violations
Student athletes face a major problem that the NCAA holds them accountable. If any student athlete
commits what is held as an NCAA violation they are forced to miss playing time or other
consequences as well. NCAA violations have become a chronic problem in collegiate sports. When
students violate the NCAA rules it can jeopardize their future career in whatever sport they are
playing. Some of the rules don't even make sense they are just useless. These rules need to be dealt
with in order for the students to just be able to go along with their lives. Current Research What
exactly are NCAA violations? NCAA violations are what are enforced if any student athlete or even
a coach commits a violation of the NCAA rules. The article "College Athletes and NCAA
Violations" does a good job at summing up what exactly NCAA violations are. Jason Winfree, states
that minimal violations happen all the time, but substantial violations almost are never committed
(Winfree 2012). Stating that small violations shows that student athletes will be punished for some
of the smallest things possible. Jason also includes that players will violate rules if it doesn't violate
what they believe (Winfree 2012) so if a student believes that the need for whatever violation they
will be committing will be worth the time to commit than they will do it anyway. The article argues
that the NCAA wants these rules in place to make sure that the students athletes sees themselves as

Ncaa Pros And Cons

  • 1. Ncaa Pros And Cons The National Collegiate Athletic Association, better known as the acronym NCAA, was formed in 1906 as the IAAUS, which stands for Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, then changed to its current name the NCAA in 1910. In 1973 the current three–division setup of Divisions I, II, and III was adopted by the NCAA, and they are currently governed by the NCAA president Mark Emmert. Under this new format Divisions, I and II can offer scholarships to athletes for playing sports but Divisions III may not offer any athletic scholarships. In 1983, the 75th Convention approved an expansion for woman's athletic program services and started the push for woman's championships program. There are 23 men, women, and coeducational sanctioned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Currently the NCAA has media rights with CBS Sports, CBS Sports Networks, ESPN, ESPN Plus, and Turner Sports for coverage of its 88 championships. From 1988 to 2013, Electronic Arts had a license to develop college sports video games but has since withdrawn their privileges due to a series of lawsuits involving the use of player likenesses in the video games. In order to be an eligible student athlete in their freshman year the NCAA states that a student must met three requirements: graduate from high school, complete the minimum required academic courses, and have a qualifying grade–point average and SAT or ACT scores. All schools governed under the NCAA agree to follow their constitution and bylaws under the notion that they will be punished if there is a failure to uphold that. When a school is found guilty of more than one violation of the NCAA's rules, they are considered to exhibit "lack of institutional control". If the school is found guilty of egregious misconduct, the NCAA has the power to ban the school from participating in a particular sport, which is known as the "Death Penalty. Coaches, Athletic directors, and athletic support staff can be disallowed from working for an NCAA member school without their permission; this is known as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The NCAA Controversy The NCAA 480,000 athletes; 19,000 teams; 3 divisions; 1 association (NCAA, n.d.) This is a description of the NCAA today. In the early 1900's, President Roosevelt got together with Harvard, Princeton and Yale to ban the flying wedge (a very dangerous play in football that caused 18 deaths the previous year.) (Demars, 2016). This was the commencement of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, formally known as the NCAA. The NCAA is an organization that was created to improve collegiate sports, and while it has expanded and done so, there have been challenges and controversy along the way. The NCAA "is a member–led organization dedicated to the well–being and lifelong success of college athletes." (NCAA, n.d.)The primary purpose of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The NCAA has expanded college athletics, created more female athletes/sports, and made a safer activity. The NCAA has also shown their detriments through lack of oversight, internal abuse of the system, and lots of controversy. The NCAA will endure overtime and hopefully continue to improve college sports and address their controversy/negative impacts. Bibliography (2016, May 19). • 3. Essay On Ncaa Personally, I think there is a lot of problem with NCAA, at first I agree with the NCAA why they don't want to pay the students athlete. Like the NCAAn says their student because they students they shouldn't get pay like professional cause they still amateur, but the more I watch the video the more my mind started to change. They call the student athletes armature because of that they can't get pay. Another word, they saying their students if they pay them that would take away they tittle as students and be professional not as students' athlete. But That confuse me a lot if they see them as student, why don't they let them be students first? If they not paying them because their student than they should let them be student first. • 4. NCAA March Madness In monumental clashes for the ages, both collegiate men and women's NCAA March Madness tournaments have provided countless matches, unprecedented athleticism, and glorious victories paired with heartbreaking defeats. Yet despite their similar structures, the two tournaments have attained vastly different levels of recognition in the United States. With men's basketball, thousands of Americans tune in every year to watch the upsets and Final Four games, drooling over perennial powerhouses such as Duke University, University of Kentucky, and University of Kansas and unknown underdogs like Butler University, Wichita State University, and Virginia Commonwealth University as they all compete in titanic battles. Everyone from retirees to college students fill out fantasy brackets yearly in volumes reaching millions, praying to have that lucky year where they predict the tournament correctly. However, on the female side of the sport, audiences are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sociology professor Michael Messner of the University of Southern California explains that the media "actively constructs audiences that are likely to see the men's Final Four as a dramatic, historic event that they simply "must" watch, while fans are likely to see the women's Final Four as a nonevent or, at best, as just another game of the Men's Final Four" (Messner). Messner emphasizes the differences in language, attention, and emotion in media coverage as the sources of different representations and viewership. Professor Messner is not the only expert to contend that purposeful sexism and subtle contrast in media representation are the causes of the inequality in coverage. Others assert that we need "more women on television, in the news, and in front of our young girls," arguing purposeful disinterest in gender equality is the reason for lack of viewership in women's basketball ... • 5. Ncaa Pros And Cons The National Collegiate Athletic Association also known as the NCAA is one of the most popular Athletic Associations in the entire nation that regulates over 1,281 universities, conferences, and organizations. Some of the top conferences in the NCAA are the SEC, ACC, PAC 12, and Big Ten. The NCAA is a non–profit association that brings in over 871.6 million dollars in revenue a year. The NCAA also awards 89 national championships a year in football, basketball, softball, gymnastics, swim and dive, soccer, and tennis to name a few. The NCAA's headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana where it has been since 1999 after winning a bid war with Kansas City. Their mission, vision, and values are strong and what are needed for the success of the programs throughout the United States. If they can keep the problems to a minimum there would be no way to stop them from being the most successful in the sport business. Also, the NCAA showed that they can overcome any obstacle and move forward which one needs to do in order to be successful and help other people and fan forget. While they can always use the Penn State scandal as an example and learning point, they allowed the university, fans, staff and players to move on by lifting a ban half way through the time they were sentenced. • 6. Ncaa Monopoly Edgar Galvan NCAA as a Monopoly After over a century of existence, the National Collegiate Athletic Association stands today as a multi–million dollar organization, one of the largest and most successful organizations in the nation. The NCAA is in charge of overlooking every college athletic competition in the United States. Every year millions of fans watch NCAA organized games and follow the top prospects of every sport. However, all schools and players involved with the NCAA are obligated to follow a strict set of rules to be eligible to compete at the college level. The NCAA holds college athletes specifically to a very strict set of rules. Under the NCAA all athletes are considered amateurs. The term amateur is used to describe a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although students enjoy playing their own specific sports, they are doing it with millions of people following their path and they are generating millions of dollars to the NCAA, they just are not allowed to have any of it. Therefore, they can not be considered amateurs. In fact, these students really are not even in college to get an education. In her blog Confessions of a Whistleblower, Mary Willingham an academic advisor from the University of North Carolina, revealed that the athletes in the most successful college teams are given paper classes to replace real classes. These paper classes are classes that do not require students to attend class. Their only assignment is to turn in a paper at the end of a semester and are 100 percent of the time graded A or B. A method used to keep students eligible. Also, according to Ross Finkel and Martin Trevor in their documentary Schooled: The Price of College Sports, players have one year contracts with the schools based only on athletics. This means that even if a student–athlete had straight A's, they could lose their scholarship if they were no longer competing on the field. Their education would be over. Finally, there is transfer rules that restrict athletes from transferring from one four year University to another and play their first year("Division 1 Initial– Eligibility ToolKit."). • 7. NCAA Recruiting Issues Once the proposal was shown, the NCAA council and the committee made all necessary changes; they were then able to call for a special convention that same year in 1973 (Katz & Seifried 2014). This time, Sherman proposed three legislative and three competitive divisions (Katz & Seifried 2014). The institutions would be able to pick a division without considering their football teams, and then the College Football Committee would determine where the college football team should fall and the institution would follow suit (Katz & Seifried 2014). He also proposed by 1975 that there would be 39 national championships and 10 in each division (Katz & Seifried 2014). Once brought to a vote, the results were much different: 366 were in favor and only 13 were not (Katz & Seifried 2014). The birth of the three divisions we know of today was then officially born, but these three divisions all had their own distinct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recruiting can happen face–to–face contact, phone calls or through email. A contact can happen at any time a college coach says more than hello during a face–to–face meeting with a student–athlete off the college campus. An evaluation happens when a college coach observes a student–athlete practicing or competing. A verbal commitment occurs when a student–athlete verbally agrees to play sports for a college before he or she signs the National Letter of Intent. A verbal commitment is not set in stone, so at any time the student–athlete or college can withdraw from the agreement. When the student–athlete commits to attend a NCAA Division I, II, or III school, he or she signs a National Letter of Intent, agreeing to attend that school for one academic year (NCAA Recruiting, 2015). • 8. Ncaa Pros And Cons The NCAA recognizes one of its core values as "the pursuit of excellence in both academics and athletics" (NCAA Core Values). This shows that the NCAA is looking to benefit the students at all costs. They want to include the coaching staff of universities in this core value, but much confusion has been found between the NCAA and university athletic staff. This confusion has resulted in a tension and conflict leading to a discussion on the steps of resolution that can be taken to put this core value back into sights for both coaching staff and the NCAA. To begin, the NCAA spends their time creating rules but fails to enforce them. One such rule includes the twenty–hour rule that is continuously violated by coaches. Ray Joseph of Marist College ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The NCAA gives out two billion seven hundred thousand dollars in scholarships that can be gifted to more than one hundred fifty thousand student–athletes (Scholarships). Although this is the case, most student–athletes do not choose to compete professionally, but instead benefit from the education they are receiving. Additionally, it may seem controversial that the "coaches decide who receives a scholarship, the scholarship amount and whether it will be renewed" rather than the NCAA who is providing the money for the scholarships (Scholarships). Furthermore, many students can fit one coach's ideals for the team and will be completely wrong for another coach's. This being said coaches are constantly being added and removed. For example, over the past fifteen years Missouri University has had seventeen changes to the coaching staff while Florida has had sixty– five changes to the coaching staff (SEC Coaching Turnover Rates From Past 15 Years are Staggering). Since coaches have the most authority, many players are having their scholarships rescinded due to a change in the coaching staff. For example, Doug Segrest, a writer for the Birmingham News, interviewed Grayson Mullins, football player for Notre Dame, who was moved from his original position as a quarterback to a wide receiver when Lou Holtz, Coach for Notre Dame, was replaced by Steve Spurrier, who eventually rescinded Mullins scholarship because he did not fit the ideal model (Segrest). This demonstrates, that scholarships are constantly held over a players' head as to perform not only at the best of their ability but to the coaches' idealistic reality as well. Overall, scholarships pose a large issue in college athletics and while they do provide education to students that are harming in the long run as students are constantly at risk to lose them for performing ... • 9. NCAAAthletic Salaries NCAAAthletic Salaries In today's society many athletes are being advertised by their schools! This is happening so that the school can produce more money. However with all of this advertising, what does the athlete get in return? This question is the ongoing talk of the NCAA. Should athletes get paid an annual salary or should they resist this idea? Many big time athletes on the collegiate level are being used to make more of a profit for their respected schools. Due to this there has been an uproar of whether the athletes should get a pay for their names being used. As an athlete of the NCAA I strongly agree on athletes getting a deferred payment of $5,000. Ed O'Bannon is responsible for all of this commotion. Ed filed the case, and sued ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Solomon 1) In the NCAA there are many laws that prevent the athletes from doing certain things. These laws are called the "Laws of Amateurism". In general, amateurism requirements do not allow salary for participating in athletics, or prize money above actual or necessary expenses (NCAA Center). However Judge Claudia Wilken partially granted class action status in a lawsuit concerning the use of college athletes' names and likenesses. U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled the plaintiffs, including former and current Division I men's basketball players and Football Bowl Subdivision players, will be allowed to challenge the NCAA's current restrictions on what athletes might receive in exchange for playing sports. The ruling sets up the prospect of a fundamental change in scholarship rules and the concept of amateurism (Berkowitz 3). This would help athletes to be able to fight for the compensated pay. Another reason athletes should get deferred payments is because, it could eliminate the problem of "Under the Table Money" being taken. "Under the Table Money" is the money athletes get from fans or other supporters for their good performance. The allowance of the annual salary will give the athletes reason ... • 10. Ncaa Ethics And Compliance Program Case Study 2: NCAA Ethics and Compliance Program Lakisha Sykes Strayer University Ethics and Advocacy for HR Pro / HRM 522 November 14, 2016 Dr. Leslie Wills Abstract A few years ago, there was much discussion relating to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and those units responsible for instituting student–athlete and athletic department policy. This purpose of this paper is to discuss the ethical misconduct that occurred at Penn State, Ohio State and the University of Arkansas, and how the NCAA played a role in the wrongdoing. Coaches, players, and administrators face mounting pressures brought on by the need to sell seats and win games. In response, this type of pressure creates opportunities for offenses to take place. The first component of the paper will be to determine the fundamental ways in which the ethics programs of the NCAA failed to prevent the scandals at Penn State, Ohio State, and the University of Arkansas. Once those measures are identified and discussed, the ways the NCAA leadership contributed to the ethical violations of these schools will be discussed. The next element of the paper will predict the key differences in the scandals that occurred at each school if an effective ethics program was implemented. Next, the paper will suggest actions that the NCAA leadership should take to regain the trust and confidence of the students and stakeholders. The last section will identify measures that HR departments of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Future Of The Ncaa Seth M. Marshall Professor Kristen Bradley English 1010 9 November 2015 The Future of the NCAA College athletic programs are among the most popular sporting events in America. With this rise in popularity, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and its colleges have also seen a rise in revenue in recent years. In 2014, the NCAA made over 900 million dollars in revenue. Some collegiate coaches, such as Kentucky's John Calipari, have yearly salaries in the millions, not counting incentives and endorsement deals. While, clearly, money is being made, NCAA regulations ban collegiate athletes from being paid. Many question this rule and argue that athletes at the college level earn and deserve pay for play. The debate to pay or not to pay college athletes rages on despite the latest court ruling supporting NCAA policies. Because colleges and universities earn such a profit from sporting events, many fans feel it is only fair to distribute some of the wealth to the players. Supporters of paying student athletes feel that these young men and women should be fairly compensated for the time demanded of the athletes and the stress put on the athletes, physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. Those in favor of paying college athletes contend that athletic and academic work ethic at both high school and collegiate levels will improve, as well as, fiscal responsibility in these young adults. Up until now the NCAA was able to get away with keeping college athletes under the category of "amateur" meaning that they would not share in the portion of the profits, as that would compromise their amateur status. The court ruled, Requires that the NCAA's caps on compensation must at least reflect the full cost of school attendance (rather than merely tuition and supplies). The court also held that $5,000 trust funds would be acceptable, so long as the revenue was distributed equally to all players on a team, but rejected direct endorsements as inconsistent with the valid objectives of the NCAA."(Lemieux, 2014) This ruling will have a big impact on the business model and structure of the NCAA going forward. According to experts, "The impact of the ruling will not be radical in the short term as scholarships will become more valuable and players will receive some indirect benefits from licensing of their names and images. Illicit drugs come in many forms, but the testing procedures are all the same for any substance. There is almost always a consequence with the use of prohibited substances. TJ White Ms. Heise Honors English III 14 May 2015 Paying College Athletes The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) makes over $871 million dollars a year on college athletics. Some studies estimate as much as one billion dollars each year. A college university can make anywhere from several million dollars up to $120 million from their athletic programs. A college athlete gets paid nothing and yet a majority of their time and schedule is dictated by the sport they play. In the book Student Athlete's Guide to College, author Hillary Abramson says, "If you've gotten to the college athletic level, you 're accustomed to making sacrifices to benefit your athletic career. In college these sacrifices only get harder." (Abramson 8). In Dominic Alessi's 5 Reasons Why NCAA Athletes Should be Paid, he points out that student athletes schedules are much harder than regular students schedules. "By late afternoon they have already put in a 10 hour work day." (Alessi). Even though they are considered student athletes, the NCAA actually has rules which allow the athletes to miss class in order to fulfill their team obligations. College athletes should be paid because they spend a majority of their time with their sport, many colleges in the NCAA make a large amount of income from the sports programs, and it would help many athletes learn to be financially stable and help them in the real world as only a small fraction of college athletes turn professional and make a career ... • 16. Athletes Vs Ncaa Essay The relationship between a student–athlete and a college is contractual in nature. In Barile v. University of Virginia an Ohio court clarified that this contractual relationship is particularly applicable if a scholarship or financial aid is involved in the relationship. However, the student– athletes are not in a direct contractual relationship with the NCAA. That contractual relationship exists between the NCAA and its member institutions. Thus, the only contractual relationship former student athletes have with the NCAA is as a third–party beneficiary. Generally, student– athletes are not third party beneficiaries of the NCAA. However, Bloom v. NCAA clarified that a student–athlete may have standing as a third–party beneficiary to the contractual relationship between the NCAA and its member schools. When contemplating college income from sporting events and memorabilia from popular sports, such as football and basketball, it must not be forgotten that colleges do incur tremendous expense for all their sports programs. There would be no rush to graduate because the student–athlete is receiving free education, housing and meals as well as making money. College sports should be played for the love of the game, not for the love of money. If the NCAA decided to pay college athletes, it would create more problems than solutions. For example, if student–athletes are offered a salary, most likely the cost of school tuition will go up because the money paid to the student–athletes must come from somewhere and the revenue from sporting events and memorabilia will not be enough to cover all student–athlete salaries as well as expenses to run all the college's sports programs. In addition, not all college sports draw the same fan base and therefore, income is greatly varied between sports programs which in turn will create an unfair balance when determining the salary for each student–athlete. All student–athletes regardless of which sport they are participating would expect equal pay. If the student–athletes are paid a salary, in addition to receiving a scholarship, which includes, tuition, books, housing and meals, it would be grossly unfair to non–student–athletes because tuition costs would be increased dramatically and ultimately be unattainable for the non–student–athlete. Universities will go to any extent to protect their players from being academically ineligible to play, and seems they will do anything to get the best recruits in the country to give their team an advantage. It is hard for the NCAA to enforce strict rules, especially academically because schools have academic freedom which enables universities to make their own classroom policies. The NCAA asks, "If a certain institution permits grade changes for students up through and even after the final exam, how do you hold athletes to a different standard?" When this situation comes up most people are quick to say they are obviously being supported for the simple fact that they are getting to go to a university for free. However once you take a deeper look into things, views and thoughts of this situation may change slightly if not totally. Last winter NCAA president Mark Emmert was asked a simple question. If he thinks college athletes should or ever will be paid? "We can never move to a place where we are paying players for playing sports for us" (Miller). Those comments sparked something that will be debated for years to come. Are college athletes being exploited? Are they getting all the things that they need and are working so hard for? Or is it a supportive gesture? In addition, in August, of this year, a federal judge ruled in favor of a former UCLA Basketball star whose likeness was used in a video game. According to his study, in 2005 a football player on draft boards out of high school is worth $495,000 and a draft ready basketball player is worth more than $1.5 million to the NCAA! (Johnson, Dennis A). This mean that a scholarship player is losing money and that their actual worth to the school is worth way more than the scholarship itself. That combine with players receiving no compensation for their play in sports that have major revenue, and are also restricted to when they can go professional, shows an oppressive policy meant to use these players for ... In the 2017 Final Four NCAA Basketball Championship there was an average of 22,998,000 viewers, while the NBA championship only had 20,400,000 average viewers for it's final game between the Cavaliers and the Warriors. College Basketball games have the better games and variety of them because the NCAA has tons of games airing each night, while the NBA has a minimum of 3 and a max of 10 per night. The NCAA has stuck with the current format for the bracket since 2011. There are 68 teams that compete in the NCAA basketball tournament from March to April. 32 of the 68 teams automatically qualify if they win their conference championship. The Ivy does not have a tournament championship so whoever is the regular season champion in the Ivy League has an automatic bid as well. The rest of the 36 slots are filled by at–large–bids and are selected by a committee based on their record and how difficult teams schedules were. This selection is televised on ESPN and is called, "Selection Sunday." After the committee picks who belong in the tournament, they then need to make the seeding's for each team. If you are a #1 seed you are considered the best team in that region. If you're a #16 you are the worst team. • 35. NCAA March Madness Research Paper Avid college basketball fans refer to it as NCAA March Madness. Because it is a one–and–done, single elimination format, it's packed with excitement. Adding to the intrigue are the smaller schools, known as Cinderella's, who endear themselves to the hearts of college basketball fans. Former Ohio State University coach Harold Olsen initiated the idea back in 1939. From what was originally an eight school tournament, the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has ballooned to 68 Division I schools. Deciding who is worthy, from over 300 division I colleges, is a difficult process. The final decision rests with the NCAA Selection Committee. This is one area that is frequently disputed. Occasionally, when a small conference school has a remarkable season, but lose in their conference tournament, that school will bump a major or mid– major school from consideration. Big conference schools that have successful seasons are all but assured a spot in the tournament. Committee members discuss strength of schedule statistics, wins against highly ranked opponents and simple human feelings about which teams are more deserving. As the actual selection of schools progresses, members use the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), to weight teams according to season long productivity. The RPI index is also a prominent factor in the final seeding. This is actually a very detailed formula. The RPI includes the team's winning percentage, their opponents winning percentage and even the opponents of their opponents winning percentage. This data is even further dissected into four quadrants that consider 'good wins' and even 'bad losses'. The final 64 teams are split into four regions. Teams are seeded from 1 to 16, and matched in reverse order of their seed. As of May 29, 2004 "the NCAA and the U.S. Department of Defense are embarking on a landmark $30 million initiative to enhance the study of student–athletes and service members" (ncaa.org). The Ethical Consideration Of The Ncaa The Lack of Consistency: The Ethical Consideration of the NCAA Kamren Gilliam Old Dominion University The Lack of Consistency: The Ethical Consideration of the NCAA In recent years, collegiate athletics has evolved from the original spectrum of rivalry competition into a business model that focuses on branding and expanding markets. According to Stephanie Harrison–Dyer (2011), "Sport is too much a game to be business and too much a business to be a game" (p. 1). Although competitive sport has contributed remarkably to human culture, the increased popularity of sport and sport enthusiasts has generated a greater concern for moral and ethical conduct among athletes (Harrison–Dyer, 2011). This four–level violation structure replaces the original "two–tier approach," and was entirely designed to emphasize breaches of conduct that undermine the NCAA Constitution and its bylaws. The levels of violations range from Level I: Severe breach of conduct to Level IV: incidental infractions or issues (National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2013). Severe Breach of Conduct. • 38. Pros And Cons Of The NCAA The NCAA is an easy organization to make fun of. The governing body of college sports loves to wield its hammer of justice in the most uninformed, one–sided way as possible. That is true, although, sometimes we forget about the difficult terrain it has to navigate. In what will almost certainly end with Mark Emmert becoming a punching–bag to those who loathe the collegiate athletic model, the NCAA is claiming that it can't mandate diversity hiring. Let's start with the context. In October, six members of Congress asked Emmert to address the status of a pledge the NCAA had asked schools to sign last year in support of diversifying their hiring pools when jobs become available. This was after Congress addressed its concerns over the majority of college coaches being white males. It seems like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Universities and colleges retain their autonomy and authority in this regard. We remain vigilant and concerned about representational diversity of ethnic minorities and women in coaching and athletics administration." Here is where things get tricky and vernacular matters. Lost in all the hatred the NCAA and Emmert receives is the fact that the organization is just an extension of its university members. The NCAA isn't running college sports, it is overseeing it, on behalf of the schools it represents. Or, more simply put, the actual "bosses" –– at least in the grand scheme of things –– are the schools. Not the NCAA. Emmert represents the schools. He is similar in his position as are those who oversee the NFL and NBA. He's the face of the governing body, but he isn't the one making up the rules. He helps, obviously, but he is meant to represent what the majority of universities want. If all schools wanted something to be fixed, the NCAA would likely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A student–athlete must attend practice for 10 to 20 hours per week, travel to games on most weekends during the season, and at the same time, keep up with an academic workload comparable to that of a student without commitment to athletics. But unlike ordinary students without athletics, student–athletes must also many times care for families and spouses. Actually, approximately 24% of student athletes are married, and of that 24%, about 62% have children. Of the students without their own spouses or children, many must care for parents and siblings. The rules and regulations regarding the student–athlete are set forth by the NCAA, which serves as the governing body over college athletics. Most college athletes are not wealthy and among the many rules imposed for these privileged individuals, they are not permitted to carry jobs, receive money, rewards, or any type of kickbacks from any sources other than family. • 41. College Athletes And Ncaa Violations Student athletes face a major problem that the NCAA holds them accountable. If any student athlete commits what is held as an NCAA violation they are forced to miss playing time or other consequences as well. NCAA violations have become a chronic problem in collegiate sports. When students violate the NCAA rules it can jeopardize their future career in whatever sport they are playing. Some of the rules don't even make sense they are just useless. These rules need to be dealt with in order for the students to just be able to go along with their lives. Current Research What exactly are NCAA violations? NCAA violations are what are enforced if any student athlete or even a coach commits a violation of the NCAA rules. The article "College Athletes and NCAA Violations" does a good job at summing up what exactly NCAA violations are. Jason Winfree, states that minimal violations happen all the time, but substantial violations almost are never committed (Winfree 2012). Stating that small violations shows that student athletes will be punished for some of the smallest things possible. Jason also includes that players will violate rules if it doesn't violate what they believe (Winfree 2012) so if a student believes that the need for whatever violation they will be committing will be worth the time to commit than they will do it anyway. The article argues that the NCAA wants these rules in place to make sure that the students athletes sees themselves as students and not as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
