Is there enough benefits in the world to continue deforestation? Deforestation is a big industry in this day and time. There are
more negative aspects of deforestation than positive aspects. This is not a big problem yet in North America as it is mostly in
places like the Amazon Rainforest. Wooded areas also classified as forest make up 31% of the land on earth, these forests
produce things such as oxygen and habitats for humans and animals. ("World Wildlife, Overview). There are 5 major
contributors to deforestation that will be stated through the paper and these include Agricultural Expansion, Livestock Ranching,
Logging, Infrastructure Expansion and Overpopulation. Logging is one of the biggest contributors to deforestation considering
that it brings in a large revenue. People may argue that large logging operations need to stay in business because it creates jobs
for people. If the logging companies are harvesting trees the right way and replanting seedlings after they are done logging then
it will become a renewable resource. There are many solutions to stopping deforestation but this is the most effective way. It still
provides jobs for people without effecting the environment in a negative way. Civilization and industrialization is also a big
contributor to deforestation which helps the economy. Agriculture is also a contributor to deforestation, forests are cut down so
that farmers are able to expand their crops which provides food for people in need.("17 Important pros and cons of

make a fortune. None such example is better than the logging industry. In the book "A Walk in the Woods", writer Bill Bryson
examines the impact logging has on tree population of not only the Appalachian Trail (where the story takes place), but
throughout the United States. He contributes a mass amount of the damage to the logging industry's over logging and the mass
deforesting to create the roads to the logging sites. As I read the book I became more and more interested in the effects of
logging, so I made it my goal was to find to what extent the logging industry and National Forest Services have contributed to
deforestation in the U.S. My first article was a research piece done by the University of Michigan posted in lecture format on the
web. The most prevalent fixture in the piece was that "Since 1600, 90% of the virgin forests that once covered much of the lower

The Future of British Columbia's Top Industry
History of forestry in British Columbia British Columbia has relied on forestry as an economical export resource for about 100
years. In B.C we have two main forests, the coastal forest, which contains the dominant species of the western hemlock (figure
1.). But, also contain red cedar and Douglas fir below the 51st parallel. (Text pg. 128– 129) This is typically a very dense
sprawling forest, with large trees. Opposed to the interior forest, that mainly is populated with lodge pole pine and spruce trees.
These trees are both small and spread further apart from one tree to another. (Figure 2)
We as a province mainly harvest from the coastal forests for two main reason. First, here we can harvest in greater volumes per
square hector. Providing that we are clear cutting. This is because one there is more trees in a smaller area and two the trees are
simply just bigger. And finally the biggest reason is transportation of the lumber. We typically harvest close to water ways so we
can cut down the trees and then just place them in the water to transport downstream to lumber and pulp mills.
The best way to see the history behind forestry in an economic sense is to look at the soft wood lumber export history knowing
that soft wood is what we predominantly find in our coastal forests due to the mild climate that B.C's coast has.

In the event that a fire does start, suppression activities would be carried out faster and more effectively than those areas that
have gone without treatment. Proof of this can be found within a study that was done after the 2002 Biscuit Fire that happened
within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in Southern Oregon. Scientists on a research team studied the damage of the fire in areas that
had previously been treated by having ground and ladder fuels removed via thinning/cutting and prescribed underburning. These
areas showed the least tree mortality of any other areas within the fire. The areas with the highest tree mortality included those

Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of salmon streams nationwide, when
it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole.
The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the past several decades.
Recently, they have become more responsible about clear–cut logging. Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future
wildlife habitat and logging efforts. However, this doesn't help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of
massive trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs have been lost.
Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed.
So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want to protect this owl. How
will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient
lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The spotted owl needs a home.
One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of jobs. There were 21,000 jobs lost
during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999). The amount of job losses in the logging and milling industry at this time
