The Benefits Of Deforestation In North America
Is there enough benefits in the world to continue deforestation? Deforestation is a big industry in this day and time. There are
more negative aspects of deforestation than positive aspects. This is not a big problem yet in North America as it is mostly in
places like the Amazon Rainforest. Wooded areas also classified as forest make up 31% of the land on earth, these forests
produce things such as oxygen and habitats for humans and animals. ("World Wildlife, Overview). There are 5 major
contributors to deforestation that will be stated through the paper and these include Agricultural Expansion, Livestock Ranching,
Logging, Infrastructure Expansion and Overpopulation. Logging is one of the biggest contributors to deforestation considering
that it brings in a large revenue. People may argue that large logging operations need to stay in business because it creates jobs
for people. If the logging companies are harvesting trees the right way and replanting seedlings after they are done logging then
it will become a renewable resource. There are many solutions to stopping deforestation but this is the most effective way. It still
provides jobs for people without effecting the environment in a negative way. Civilization and industrialization is also a big
contributor to deforestation which helps the economy. Agriculture is also a contributor to deforestation, forests are cut down so
that farmers are able to expand their crops which provides food for people in need.("17 Important pros and cons of
Deforestation"). Deforestation needs to be reduced as much as it can be before it is too late and there is nothing left of the forests
and species that exist now. The first contributor to deforestation that will be talked about is Agricultural expansion. Agriculture is
a booming industry in this day and time and it will continue to be a big part of the economy because their will always be a big
demand for it. Without agriculture this world would not be in existence today. There is an increase in global demand for
resources such as palm oil and soybeans which are encouraging large scale industrial producers to clear forest to make room for
crop space. Efforts are made to restore plantations but even though

The Financial Success Of A Company 's Social And Economic...
The biggest opposition to the protection of these wilderness areas is logging companies, who profit off clear cutting timber as
quickly and efficiently as possible. These companies then sell off the deforested land and move their operations elsewhere. Clear
cutting forests can have some benefits in specific instances, such as preventing the spread of disease or saving millions of dollars
in Wildland firefighting costs ("Biodiversity and the Cost of Clear Cutting" – Musicians for Forests, 2015). Unfortunately, these
timber clear cutting operations come at a cost to taxpayers, local ecosystems, and to loggers themselves. I can acknowledge that
the financial success of a company has social and economic benefits within human society. However, I believe that allowing a
company to profit at the expense of our ecological environment, degrading the very foundations of terrestrial life, is antithetical
to ethical behavior and human prosperity.
The following section outlines the economic, ecological, and social costs of clear–cut logging in the Northern United States. I
believe that the costs far outweigh any good that politicians, lobbyists, or logging companies could argue come from aggressive
clear–cut logging operations. In 1993 logging on public lands in the northern Rockies (Region One) by the United States Forest
Service cost the government between $100 million and $200 million more than the amount received for the sale of the timber
(Bass, 1996). Compare this with the $2.5

Although there may be a good market and consumer base, it will give A Team Oil to increase the consumer base by offering
promotional deals and incentives to new customers. This acquisition of the company also comes with experienced employees
that may not need extensive training, but they will only need to be trained on A Team Oil's policies and procedures. The second
entry mode would be contract manufacturing in Spain. This entry mode would allow A Team Oil to have a contract between local
manufacturers to produce a product to the company's expectations. This entry mode will generate employment for people that
live in Spain as well as generate foreign exchange, which can increase revenue. This is a great way to build a strong business
relationship in Spain and allow for more expansion. Cross–Cultural Factors Spain is one of the most captivating countries that
have contributed to its unique culture and history to the modern world we know as today. Before Spain was established, it was a
tag and war between many civilizations that claimed the land of Spain, and it is not until later date around the1500s it established
as a country, Spain. As United Sates, back in the day, it was a colonial country that was built by many cultures with unique
characteristics that welcomed large quantities of immigrants from all over the world. The both are not different in a sense of how

It is irrefutable that we are living through the most productive era of industrialization and capitalism. The mass production of
goods that industrialization has afforded society has made accessibility to citizens increasingly easier. While life has become
significantly simpler since the majority of the human population has adopted a sedentary way of living all aspects of life
supporting systems have suffered such as the biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and hydrosphere (Miller et al 2015). In the first

Nigeria's Production And Exportation Of Oil
While it is only the 11th largest global oil producer, Nigeria is one the most important countries in the oil production community.
Due to high quality crude oil, potential for future oil production endeavors, accessible location to the vast Western oil market,
and continuing trend of non–nationalization, Nigeria has become the largest oil producer in sub–Saharan Africa. These
advantages have developed Nigeria into a country entirely dependent on the production and exportation of oil. In 2007, oil
encompassed 99 percent of Nigerian oil exportation earnings, making up 85 percent of the governments total revenue1. Despite
400 billion dollars in total oil revenue collected by the Nigerian government since 1970, the country faces a standard of ... Show

In order to fully understand the mechanics of the clientalistic Nigerian oil governeance, one must first explore the structuring of
the institutions tasked with overseeing the industry. First and foremost is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, or the
NNPC. The NNPC is the parent company comprised of itself and 12 wholly owned subsidiaries that range from oil trade
companies to petrochemical plants. With a workforce of over 9000, the NNPC oversees operation both down and upstream on
the Niger river. The NNPC controls such a large percent through its subsidiary the National Petroleum Investment Management
Services (NAPIMS), an investment firm that acts as the concessionaire for the NNPC, brokering all the oil contracts on the
behalf of the Nigerian government. Utilizing its incredibly high amount of government mandate in conjunction with its industry
savvy personnel, the NNPC has postured itself as the leading influence over the Nigerian oil sector. Second in the pecking order
is the minister of Petroleum, the official tasked with overseeing the NNPC. A position now (and much of history prior to 1999)
held by the Nigerian president, the minister forms a tightly knit cabinet of advisors whose will governs the majority of oil–sector
policy making. However, the position has lent itself to corruption, instilling concentrated amounts of power in an institution with

Land of the Free, Unless You Are a Tree
Land of the Free, Unless You are a Tree America has always been a land of opportunity, where a man can cater to the market and
make a fortune. None such example is better than the logging industry. In the book "A Walk in the Woods", writer Bill Bryson
examines the impact logging has on tree population of not only the Appalachian Trail (where the story takes place), but
throughout the United States. He contributes a mass amount of the damage to the logging industry's over logging and the mass
deforesting to create the roads to the logging sites. As I read the book I became more and more interested in the effects of
logging, so I made it my goal was to find to what extent the logging industry and National Forest Services have contributed to
deforestation in the U.S. My first article was a research piece done by the University of Michigan posted in lecture format on the
web. The most prevalent fixture in the piece was that "Since 1600, 90% of the virgin forests that once covered much of the lower
48 states have been cleared away." (Global Deforestation) The writer contributes the mass amount of this clearing to the heavy
logging and western expansion of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Although there has been recent movements of reforestation
that has slowed the pace of logging, this article helped me see that the National Forest Service has seemingly been doing
everything it can to not protect the national forests. I found my second article searching the ecology section

Environmental Issues : The Impacts Of Deforestation In...
I. Introduction
"Forests are the world's air conditioning system, the lungs of the planet, and we are on the verge of switching it off" stated by
Prince Charles as cited in (Presidential Lecture, 2008). One of the most common problem that always debated nowadays is about
environmental issue that caused by most of human activities. There are many kinds of environmental issues in Indonesia and one
of them is deforestation. Deforestation is a long term destruction of forest in order to open new spaces or taken its resource to be
used for another alternative uses. Forest provide natural resources, habitats for animal species, prevention of erosion, main key of
water cycle process, and watershed protection (Bradford, 2015). In this report, the impacts of deforestation in economics,
politics, and international dimension point of view will be scrutinized.
II. Explanation of problem
Deforestation is a long term degradation of forest by burning or logging the forest in a large amount in order to clear the large
area of forest lands which related to ecosystem for non forest use. Since the industrial age started, millions of animals and the
other living things have been endangered, about half of the world's original forests have been destroyed. In some tropical
rainforests countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Brazil have the most problems with deforestation (eSchooltoday, 2010). At
the end of 20th century, our earth's rainforests only have 30 percent of the world rainforests

Is Cloud Security Isn 't Enough?
4. Cloud Security Isn't Enough
Computers are susceptible to many different attack forms when not properly monitored and protected. Hackers use many
different methods to infect your system. Trojans, a type of virus, is one of the most common ways that hackers use to gain access
to your system. Trojan viruses are named after the Trojan horse in the Latin epic poem The Aeneid. In this story the Greeks built
a giant wooden horse as an apology to the people of troy. Little did the people of Troy know, a large number of soldiers were
hiding inside. When the people of troy took the horse inside their castle, the soldiers obliterated the city. This same method is
used with viruses. A user downloads a program or piece of software that they need, but harmful code is hidden inside the
program. Let's say I downloaded a game from the internet that had a Trojan horse inside of it. The game may actually run and
function fully, however, it could be secretly logging my keystrokes or back–dooring my computer. The term backdoor is a
process of bypassing authentication into a system, creating a remote connection, and allowing remote access or control from the
hacker, all while remaining undetected. When a hacker has your computer back–doored it is possible for them to do anything
they want as if they were right there in front of your computer. Hackers, when they successfully have gained access to your
computer, often install keyloggers. A keylogger is the process of logging or recording what

The Vulnerabilities And Cyber Kill Chain
A. ICS Vulnerabilities and Cyber Kill Chain
1. Reconnaissance – Summarize plausible active gathering, passive gathering, and active reconnaissance techniques that the
adversary could have executed to gain intelligence on the target in the scenario.
Reconnaissance is the act of collecting background research necessary to identify and select targets. (1) Cyber reconnaissance is
an important stage of a well–organized cyber–attack, and is also one of the most time–consuming activities. This phase can
exploit the information gathered about the target's weaknesses. The type of information the hacker is looking for is how to
actually get in: firewall ports that are open, network hosts, services that are running. Critical information that should be obtained
during the reconnaissance phase include network information, host information, security policies, and human information.
"Active reconnaissance is a type of computer attack in which an intruder engages with the targeted system to gather information
about vulnerabilities." (2) This type of information gathering involves doing something on the target network, which could
potentially be tracked back to you. The idea of this phase is to gather IP addresses, subnet masks, network topologies, user
names, operating systems, firewalls, password requirements and change frequency.
Passive reconnaissance is focused more around public information and not engaging with the targeted systems. "Typical passive
reconnaissance can include

Essay Deforestation of The Pacific Northwest
Deforestation of the Pacific Northwest
One of the most controversial areas associated with the global problem of deforestation is the Pacific Northwest of the US. The
problem can be broken down into several issues that all tie in together. These include the near extinction of the Northern Spotted
Owl, the "business" aspect of logging versus the environmental aspect, and the role of the government in this problem. In 1973,
the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed. This enabled the
Dept. of Commerce and Dept. of the Interior to place species, either land or marine, as either threatened or endangered. Under
these terms species could no longer be hunted, collected, injured or killed. The northern spotted owl falls ... Show more content

Seeing an animal in an artificial environment can certainly not be compared to witnessing an animal in its' natural environment.
In my opinion, there can be no price put on the existence of any species on this planet, plant or animal. To think that money has
become such an influential part of our society that companies are willing to sacrifice a species in order to make a profit. The
northern spotted owl is only one of many species that are on the verge of extinction do to deforestation. Another important
consideration in the deforestation of the Pacific North Coast is logging as a business. The investors of a publicly owned company
sole concern is the growth of their stock, and this for lumber companies is accomplished by harvesting trees in the most efficient
and cost effective manner. Clear–cutting old growth is the best way to accomplish this. This approach leads to quick financial
gain but is not best for the long–term or the trees. It is the companies that use this process that is the most unfavorable to the
forests and contributes to deforestation the most. Another approach uses wise management techniques to maximize the long–
term profit of the forest. Guest speaker Jerry
Howe would fall into this category as a private land owner. As a land
"steward," he believes he can do what he wants with his land. The term
"steward" is used

Fracking Is Not The Cleanest Alternative For Oil...
Fracking The term, "fracking" has existed for nearly a half century and has always had the negative connotations of being
unclean and the source for many environmental issues and adverse health effects. The massive oil deposits recovered by modern
hydraulic fracturing can be considered as the oil boom of the twenty–first century and with new methods, safety procedures, and
technology, potential hazards can be reduced or even eliminated. Due to the many possible hazards of the fracking process, it has
initiated much political discussion at the state and federal levels of government, while inciting concern of local citizens. Fracking

However, fracking fluid is not the only questionable aspect of fracking, included is land and infrastructure degradation,
physiological harm to local citizens, utilization of legislation loopholes, and the secrecy of fracking fluid formulas within the
industry. Nonetheless, the negative attributes of fracking, such as fracking fluid dispersal and other environmental issues are
outweighed by the vast economic gains and can be mitigated by a system of regulations and development of new technologies
for the industry. The fracking industry will only increase in size, so much so that reclamation of shale gas is called "eminent
shale gas revolution. British Petroleum [BP], for instance, expects global shale gas production to grow six–fold from 2011 to
2030. Shale gas production in the United States already accounts for roughly 30 percent of the nationwide total a growth rate up
from only 4 percent in 2005" (Sovacool, 251). It has also been estimated that more than "80 percent of the natural gas wells
developed in the United States over the next ten years are expected to require fracking and it is projected that by 2035 natural gas
wells will represent more than a 75 percent share of the domestic supply" (Bleiwas, 68). Natural gas exploration began in the late
1940s' to extract the natural gas located in underground reserves. The process consisted of digging a vertical well into the ground

Deforestation : A Plague Of The Forests
A Plague of the Forests
Although deforestation is helping the development of many countries, cities and states, humans should work as hard as they
possibly can to bring a halt to deforestation. This plague among the forests is causing harm not only to humans, with the drastic
climate change, but this is also causing animals to become extinct. In some ways, deforestation makes our society come across as
self–serving, by using the cleared lands for our own personal advantages, such as: construction of homes, businesses, amusement
parks, dams, performances of oil extraction, mining and industrial agriculture. "The Amazon has lost at least seventeen percent
of forest cover in the last half century due to human actions" (Giant Panda). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Animals are able to migrate, but how can they recover from their homes being destroyed? It is not just the deforestation itself
that clears out the diverse animal populations, but the effects that come along with it. Deforestation can cause a major issue with
climate change that causes temperature swings, these temperature swings that often result in droughts, can sometimes result in
forest fires that harm the animals.
Not only is there animal homes destroyed in the process of deforestation, but the homes of nearly three hundred million people
are being destroyed along with it. In the forests, they can find so many resources to help them survive in the wooded areas, such
as: plants they use as medicine, freshwater, different berries and fruits they use as food, along with fresh air. When people's
homes are being destroyed and they need to relocate this is creating an issue with reduced biodiversity. "Inside forests, climate
change is already harming biodiversity, a threat that is likely to increase" (Bradford, Alina). Some problem creating factors of
this is the disruption of the water cycle, increased soil erosion and the conversion of the forests. Farmers believe that
deforestation can be useful to convert a forest into a site for cattle grazing, turbines, growing soybeans or palm oil, however, in
reality, this makes only makes the conditions for planting worse. (S3.amazonaws.com) A cleared land disrupts the water cycle,

The Effect Of Sonic Logs On The Petroleum Industry And The...
Logging is a method which has been used over a period of time to better understand subsurface parameters and reservoir
conditions. The Acoustic or Sonic log is one such method which is used in combination with density and neutron logs in order to
determine these parameters. Full–waveform acoustic logging has advanced significantly in both theory and application in recent
years, and these advances have greatly increased the capability of log analysts to measure the physical properties of formations
(Paillet et al 1992). This report focuses on the basic application of sonic logs in the petroleum industry and the current advances
made in their application. It is also explained how porosity of the rocks are obtained from shaly formations using sonic logs.
The principle of sonic logging involves a transmitter and a receiver wherein a signal is sent from the transmitter and the amount
of time taken until it has reached the receiver is recorded. The speed of sound in the subsurface depends on the elastic properties
of the rock matrix, the porosity of the formations, fluid content and pressure of the formation (Petroleum Transactions, Members
AIME 1958). Sonic logging is carried out after the well has been drilled. Background: History of Sonic Logs
Sonic logs were first introduced in the 1920s as a part of surface seismic techniques in in oil and gas exploration. In the
beginning there was an obvious interpretation problem between the time and depth correlation. Although the

4. Select intervals with at least four feet of constant response whenever possible. Use a single representative value from the
center of the zone for each porosity and resistivity measurement. This procedure minimizes thin bed and bed boundary effects on
the logs.
5. Consider how to keep the interpretation simple. Analyse the most clear–cut cases first. Look for: The obvious mineral markers
(salt, anhydrite). The cleanest, most porous, intervals. The cleanest, water–bearing, intervals. The cleanest, hydrocarbon–bearing,
intervals. The fluid contacts: gas/oil, oil/water. The transition zones.
6. Tackle one unknown at a time. For example, when deriving an Rw value from logs, choose a water–bearing zone as nearly
identical as possible to the hydrocarbon zone of interest. This means the two zones have the same lithology, have the same or
very similar porosity values, have the same type of pore structure (do not compare a zone with moldic porosity to one with
granular or fracture porosity for instance), have the same formation water chemistry, etc. Ideally, the two zones are identical
except for hydrocarbon content.

Informative Essay On Clearcutting
The Clear Cut Facts of Clearcutting
Imagine you are driving down the road through a beautiful forest full of big tall mature trees. You round a turn and then out of
the driver side window you see no more trees. All the tree are gone as far as you can see. What is the first thing that comes to
your mind? "This is horrible! Why has someone one done this?" if that is what you said then you are going to find out benefits as
to why someone has decided to clearcut their property. If you would have said "wow that looks like a nice harvest" then you
have been educated on the beneficial purposes of a clearcut. A clearcut is the removal of all the overstory trees within a site,
leaving no trees. Clearcutting is the most controversial timber harvesting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This increase in temperature increases chemical and biological activity by double. Therefore, organic material brakes down at a
faster rate on a clearcut. This then increases the fertility and nutrients in the soil. However, it also increases nutrient release into
the streams. This increase in nutrients only last around seven years (page 53 and 54). Keeping slash (branches from trees) after a
clearcut also helps protect the soil from erosion and compaction. The slash shields the soil from direct impact of raindrops which
during a moderate rainfall each drop applies 20.7 foot pounds per square foot (57). This amount of force will detach and loosen
soil particles making them more prone to be washed away. Most unacceptable erosion occurs on skid and truck roads. But, by
following the BMP to road construction this can be

interest in people when he's at a restaurant for breakfast. "Two eggs up, hash browns, tomato juice. The waitress whose, pale,
almost translucent skin shifted hue" (Heat Moon 27). Heat Moon definitely thinks about the different types of people, and finds
them interesting to look at. Heat Moon is able to look at the people serving the food, and associate them with the different types
of characteristics."Whole–hog sausage, home–canned June apples, turnip greens, coleslaw, potatoes, stuffing and hot corn

eye for detail when it comes to food. Heat Moon also makes personal connections when he eats meals with civilians. Heat Moon
feels like he can relate to the people he shares meals with, and he feels especially strong about this when talking to Wheeler.

As Global Temperatures Rise And Summer Weather Meets Winter
As global temperatures rise and summer weather meets winter months, concerns of sustainability are in the limelight of the
political sphere. The topic of sustainability immediately sparks conversation regarding how to minimize the depletion of valuable
natural resources, but the issues of sustainability concern more than only nature's demise. The polarization of the strikingly
serious issues of sustainability and climate change has created a need for unity. Political parties and powerful figures have
challenged the legitimacy of the changing climate, turning people against each other based on their beliefs. Having the freedom

The Haitian people began to blame the American Plan for causing contamination in the oceans, worsening the AIDS pandemic,
and, in a more satirical sense, causing bad weather and flat tires.
The issue with the American government's intervention in Haiti involves the disregard for Haitian autonomy. The United States
instituted an agricultural development plan, SHADA, that would remove forty thousand families from their land and leave
outsiders to poorly manage the fertile soil. When the farmers returned, they were at a loss to see how destroyed their land was,
sometimes they could "not even recognize their own fields because the identifying trees, hills, and bushes had all been bulldozed
away" (272). Haitian protests and rejections of the plan were strong, yet they remained powerless compared to the strength of the
United States. In order to preserve the land that Haitians have farmed for years, personal autonomy would have been required.
American intervention into Haiti, although the intentions were to revitalize the economy, left hundreds of acres of land
destroyed, trees severed, and peasants homeless. If the United States were not to intervene, Haitian farmers would have been
able to continue on with their autonomy, as generations before successfully accomplished, with cultivating their land. Instead,
the United States stripped the people of Haiti and their self–governance,

Deforestation Is The Permanent Removal
"More than 80% of Earth's natural forests have already been destroyed at the rate of 20,000 hectares per day" according to the
World Resources Institute (WRI). Despite our dependence on forests for our means of survival, from the provision of livelihoods
for us human–beings, the prevention of soil erosion, medicines derived from rainforest plants, to the air we breathe, we are still
allowing them to disappear at shockingly high rates through deforestation. High deforestation rates, primarily as a result of the
growing demand for agriculture, fuel use and production, fires, timber harvesting, logging, and pasture and clearing for livestock

Significant increases in greenhouse gas emissions contribute to large–scale, rising temperatures, changed weather patterns, and
an escalated frequency of severe weather events contributing to issues such as global warming and biodiversity loss as a result of
the decreasing availability of adequate food and water and altered habitats in these integrated ecosystems. Disruptions of water
cycles such as changes in precipitation and river flow are considerably impacted when deforestation or forest degradation occurs,
resulting in the throwing off of the balance between water on land and in the atmosphere that trees help maintain. Other negative
impacts of deforestation or forest degradation comprises of increased soil erosion, disrupted livelihoods, and a simultaneously
high loss in biodiversity species. Deforestation often results in the extinction of numerous, unique species struggling to survive
in geographic locations all over the world. "About 80% of the world's documented species can be found in tropical rainforests–
some of the forests most vulnerable to deforestation." (WWF). Agricultural expansion, wood extraction, and infrastructure

Deforestation in America Essay
What is happening to the Earth? Our home is becoming a barren mass of sorrow. Most people in America are blind to what is
going on. Could it be that every individual is just turning a cheek the other way. America is faced with an extremely serious
problem, and if it is not acted upon there will be nothing left on Earth. Hopefully it will still be able to thrive after the numerous
accounts of human destruction. Deforestation in America is a huge problem with devastating affects to humans. The root causes
of this travesty are mainly the ongoing need to increase America's economic growth, and the idea of frontierism. These two
aspects of deforestation tie together well. Together they help define the thought process that Americans have ... Show more

Frontierism plays a huge role in contributing to deforestation in America because it is enabling various logging companies to
rationalize the need for wood. The demand for timber seems to be increasing in America as the rate of our forests decrease. The
selfishness involved with this whole idea of frontierism is an outrage. Americans need to be further educated about frontierism
and its persuasion on deforestation. This is one of the main problems why America is where they are today as far as the
environment goes.
An average student at UNH wakes up in the morning and takes a hot shower which uses wood energy from the campus energy
source. We write on numerous sheets of paper for notes, waste energy by leaving our lights on, computers running, and music
playing. Not to mention the posters on students dorm room walls. All of these everyday factors influence the necessity for
deforestation. If just two hundred students shut off their lights when they are not needed and only use their computers when
necessary than UNH would save thousands of dollars in energy use.
For years upon years companies have wormed their way into the minds of Americans to consume. The companies mask all of the
real problems. Many logging companies associated with larger corporations have failed to make Americans aware of the
pollution and the increase in toxic gases and waste that is being dispersed every where. All that matters to them is the flow of
money that the businesses are

How Drug And Human Trafficking Differ From Traditional...
but this could possibly happen in areas like Munro's 'borderlands', the Golden Triangle, or other places within Southeast Asia.
How drug and human trafficking differ from traditional security threats are that unlike traditional external military threats which
represent a state or a force, transnational traffickers are a part of a globalise network of groups and individuals. Discussed in the
previous paragraph, people that are a part of the trafficking industry range from everyday people and businessmen, to criminal
groups; with the only relation they have to each other is the commodity they smuggle. Because of this and the illicit market drive
of demand and supply, traditional means of increasing police, destroy criminal groups, and increasing illegal trafficking penalties
does little to reduce the demand and supply. In order to reduce the flow of trafficked commodities, states should reduce the
supply and demand of the illicit industries. This essay will now discuss the state security challenges of corruption.
Corruption is an important factor necessary for smuggling illicit commodities transnationally. Both Munro and Phil Williams
support this in their texts, with Williams stating that, corruption is a 'lubricant which allows organised criminal organisations to
operate with maximum effectiveness'. As discussed in the previous paragraph, the drug industry provides large amounts of funds
to illicit groups. These funds can be used to pay off state officials to not

Saving the Old Growth Forests Essay
Saving the Old Growth Forests
America's Old Growth Forests are an endangered resource that is quickly disappearing. The ancient forests are being
unnecessarily wasted, and are growing smaller and smaller with each passing moment.
Because the logging industry and the organizations in control of much of the remaining old growth (approx. 5%) are failing to
see its value from an ecological/spiritual perspective, the children of tomorrow may never gaze upon the history of today if we
do not take a stand now, and prevent the short–sightedness of others from destroying what ultimately belongs to us all.

"According to the United Nations, at least 37.5 million acres of rainforest is harvested annually. Despite the relatively small areas
of land the rainforests cover, they are home to nearly–half of the 5–10 million plant and animal species on the planet Earth
(Brown, 1998)." Many of these are indigenous species that scientists feel may be the key to the development of new medicines
which may ultimately lead to cures for some of the world's most terrible diseases. Furthermore the rainforests are the lungs of
our planet, without which life would not be possible, and while it's true that younger trees do in fact produce more net oxygen
than do mature trees, much of the rainforest is not being replanted, and therefore the destruction taking place there is permanent.
For this reason; it is no longer acceptable to stand idly by, while large corporations; such as Weyerhaeuser, destroy what remains
of the world's oldest living ecosystems with no regard for the well being of the Earth or the potential wealth of information
and/or sheer joy of experience for future generations.

The Future of British Columbia's Top Industry
History of forestry in British Columbia British Columbia has relied on forestry as an economical export resource for about 100
years. In B.C we have two main forests, the coastal forest, which contains the dominant species of the western hemlock (figure
1.). But, also contain red cedar and Douglas fir below the 51st parallel. (Text pg. 128– 129) This is typically a very dense
sprawling forest, with large trees. Opposed to the interior forest, that mainly is populated with lodge pole pine and spruce trees.
These trees are both small and spread further apart from one tree to another. (Figure 2)
We as a province mainly harvest from the coastal forests for two main reason. First, here we can harvest in greater volumes per
square hector. Providing that we are clear cutting. This is because one there is more trees in a smaller area and two the trees are
simply just bigger. And finally the biggest reason is transportation of the lumber. We typically harvest close to water ways so we
can cut down the trees and then just place them in the water to transport downstream to lumber and pulp mills.
The best way to see the history behind forestry in an economic sense is to look at the soft wood lumber export history knowing
that soft wood is what we predominantly find in our coastal forests due to the mild climate that B.C's coast has.
In table one we can see the documented exports from B.C in recent history from 1988–2000 and in that time we can actually see

Management of Old–growth Forests in the Pacific Northwest
When westward expansion brought settlers to the Northwest in the 1800s, they discovered that coniferous trees "forty feet in
circumference [that] shot two–hundred feet straight up" flourished in the forests of the Pacific coast (Ervin 55). These early
pioneers found the opportunity for economic growth in logging these vast forests of towering trees unlike any they had seen
before. Today, the timber industry still remains the backbone of economic support for Washington, Oregon, and northwestern
California, but an inevitable conflict has arisen between humans and our environment. A struggle over the control of the use of
the old–growth forests threatens the balance of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On July 23, 1990, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the pressure of environmentalists and scientific studies, listed the
spotted owl as a "threatened" species, one step away from "endangered," and entitled themselves to protecting the owl from
hunting, trading, or federal action that could destroy its breeding or feeding grounds (Carey 13). This listing came on the heels of
years of extensive studies of the spotted owl and its habitat conducted by environmental groups, the timber industry, and
governmental researchers. These studies resulted in recommendations, such as the one made in early 1990 by a committee
headed by the U.S. Forest Service's chief, Jack Ward Thomas, calling for "30–40 percent of public forests to be exempted from
logging to protect the remaining 3000–6000 owl pairs" in the Northwest. Yet, by late 1990, there had been no decrease in the rate
of logging to accommodate the owl (Abate 8).
As early as 1971, biologists had warned the Forest Service and the timber industry that old–growth logging could endanger the
spotted owl, which is a slow breeder. Studies have shown that the spotted owl's major prey, the red tree vole and the Northern
flying squirrel, thrive in the environment of the protective old–growth forest and that when the forest that an owl lives in is
logged, it will travel hundreds of miles to feed in distant ancient forests. As each acre of ancient trees falls, the

Analysis Of The Book ' Animals By Simon Rich
Synthesis Essay Animals by Simon Rich is an outstanding short story which takes a unique perspective on the everyday life in a
classroom. The story is written from the point of view of a hamster who spends his tortured life entrapped in a cage. From the
first point in this story it is clear that the purpose of the writing is not to understand the hamster, but rather to analyse the
different actions of the people, and to discover that how they act towards the hamsters reflects on their character. It is curious to
view the everyday interactions of people through a different set of eyes, that is done by humanizing the narrator's perspective.
Based on the actions of the many people and the treatment of the class pet, the author suggests that human nature is very much a
product of the financial circumstances a person is subjected to. There are a couple of key characters in this story, the first of
which is Simon. He is just one of many strikingly similar students in homeroom 2k. Simon, like many of the students is
irresponsible, and unsympathetic towards the hamsters. Simon jeopardizes the lives of the hamsters by attempting to joke around
instead of completing his assigned task, which involves giving them food and water. The majority of the story takes place in a
private school, and the reader can make the assumption that the student's parents are wealthy. The author portrays simon as well
as the other kids in a bad light, that they are, by default, poorly behaved and somewhat

The Yaak Valley Of Northern Montana
The Yaak Valley of northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the continental United States. It has cores of
roadless wilderness that have been untouched by human activity and I believe that they should remain as such. The biodiverse
ecosystem of the Yaak Valley benefits its human and non–human inhabitants and we should protect it from the detrimental
effects of human activities, especially the violent changes caused by large timber companies and their practice of clear–cut
logging. There are sustainable and pragmatic solutions that would address both human needs and protecting the biodiverse
ecosystem.
The Yaak Valley of Northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse areas of untouched wilderness in the contiguous United
States. This is due in large part to its geographical position between the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the
dry and mountainous Northern Rockies. According to the Yaak Valley Forest Council, the valley is home to a variety of rare
species including but not limited to: inland redband rainbow trout, bull trout, wolverine, lynx, fisher, coeur d 'alene salamander,

In the event that a fire does start, suppression activities would be carried out faster and more effectively than those areas that
have gone without treatment. Proof of this can be found within a study that was done after the 2002 Biscuit Fire that happened
within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in Southern Oregon. Scientists on a research team studied the damage of the fire in areas that
had previously been treated by having ground and ladder fuels removed via thinning/cutting and prescribed underburning. These
areas showed the least tree mortality of any other areas within the fire. The areas with the highest tree mortality included those
that had been thinned but ground fuels had not been removed as well as areas that had had no prior treatment. David Peterson, a
research biologist stated, "Biologists have known this in principal for many years...the Biscuit Fire gave us a chance to validate
the effectiveness of on–the–ground fuel treatments" (USDA Forest Service).
It seems fairly evident that there needs to be a balanced compromise regarding how the subject of forest management. Loggers

wildfires that have the potential to be prevented with proper fuels management are costing billions of dollars per year to

Experimental Investigation of Gas Kick Effects on Dynamic Drilling Parameters Introduction Early kick detection (EKD) is a
vital component of well control system. The prevention or management of kicks and/or fluid loss occurrence during drilling
operations is crucial, particularly in deepwater drilling activities due to the complexity of equipment and operations. Normally
well control failure occurrences could cost the oil and gas industry billions of dollars in a year due to non–productive time (NPT)

(2016) experimentally investigated kick occurrence based on the changes in mass flow rate, pressure, density and conductivity of

than the surface detection system. Vajargah and van Oort (2015) developed an algorithm that automatically selects a best well
control response to influx in a drilling operation running a constant Bottomhole pressure (CBHP) managed pressure drilling
(MPD); however, the paper did not clarify how this method will be implemented while running CBHP MPD operation in the
field. Trivedi (2014) proposed an innovative kick detection system that uses a small mud rerouting section consisting of two
plates and located just above the BHA. When there is an entrained formation fluid bubbles/droplet in the flow, the medium
between the two plates will undergo alteration and form a magnetic impulse registering as abnormality in fluid flow, hence
detecting kick. However, this technology has many limitations, including cuttings intrusion and capacitance limitations due to
plate spacing. Ahmed et al. (2016) proposed a new advanced early kick detection method that uses seven parameters data

gas etc.) from mud logging while drilling; however, this method was field specific (Offshore Nile Delta

The Effects Of Hydraulic Fracturing On The Environment
Hydraulic Fracturing is a process which uses water to crack rock formations as a means to extract natural gas or oil. This method
is highly debatable as to whether it uses too much water in areas that have fragile water sources as well as whether the process
contaminates surrounding water sources. The State of Texas is a hotspot for hydraulic fracturing because of the amount of shale
formations which can produce oil and natural gas. Texas is a dry state which often experiences severe droughts. There is debate
about if Texas has sufficient water supplies to support hydraulic fracturing. Since hydraulic fracturing is a fairly new process,
there needs to be more research to determine the realistic affect it has on the environment. The ... Show more content on

Program defines hydraulic fracturing as "an oil and gas well development process that typically involves injecting water, sand,
and chemicals under high pressure into a bedrock formation via the well" (Hydraulic Fracturing). The process is meant to
produce fractures in the rock formations which increases the flow of oil from the bedrock to the wells, where it can then be

Abstract
The spotted owl was seen as a symbol of all things environmental during the late 1980's and early 1990's. The logging industry
was well on its way to destroying most of the old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Environmentalists swarmed the area,
sabotaging logging efforts and calling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of salmon streams nationwide, when
it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole.
The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the past several decades.
Recently, they have become more responsible about clear–cut logging. Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future
wildlife habitat and logging efforts. However, this doesn't help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of
massive trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs have been lost.
Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed.
So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want to protect this owl. How
will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient
lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The spotted owl needs a home.
One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of jobs. There were 21,000 jobs lost
during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999). The amount of job losses in the logging and milling industry at this time
were not solely attributed to the spotted owl controversy. The downward trend in the timber harvest

The Benefits Of Deforestation In North America

  • 1. The Benefits Of Deforestation In North America Is there enough benefits in the world to continue deforestation? Deforestation is a big industry in this day and time. There are more negative aspects of deforestation than positive aspects. This is not a big problem yet in North America as it is mostly in places like the Amazon Rainforest. Wooded areas also classified as forest make up 31% of the land on earth, these forests produce things such as oxygen and habitats for humans and animals. ("World Wildlife, Overview). There are 5 major contributors to deforestation that will be stated through the paper and these include Agricultural Expansion, Livestock Ranching, Logging, Infrastructure Expansion and Overpopulation. Logging is one of the biggest contributors to deforestation considering that it brings in a large revenue. People may argue that large logging operations need to stay in business because it creates jobs for people. If the logging companies are harvesting trees the right way and replanting seedlings after they are done logging then it will become a renewable resource. There are many solutions to stopping deforestation but this is the most effective way. It still provides jobs for people without effecting the environment in a negative way. Civilization and industrialization is also a big contributor to deforestation which helps the economy. Agriculture is also a contributor to deforestation, forests are cut down so that farmers are able to expand their crops which provides food for people in need.("17 Important pros and cons of Deforestation"). Deforestation needs to be reduced as much as it can be before it is too late and there is nothing left of the forests and species that exist now. The first contributor to deforestation that will be talked about is Agricultural expansion. Agriculture is a booming industry in this day and time and it will continue to be a big part of the economy because their will always be a big demand for it. Without agriculture this world would not be in existence today. There is an increase in global demand for resources such as palm oil and soybeans which are encouraging large scale industrial producers to clear forest to make room for crop space. Efforts are made to restore plantations but even though ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Financial Success Of A Company 's Social And Economic... The biggest opposition to the protection of these wilderness areas is logging companies, who profit off clear cutting timber as quickly and efficiently as possible. These companies then sell off the deforested land and move their operations elsewhere. Clear cutting forests can have some benefits in specific instances, such as preventing the spread of disease or saving millions of dollars in Wildland firefighting costs ("Biodiversity and the Cost of Clear Cutting" – Musicians for Forests, 2015). Unfortunately, these timber clear cutting operations come at a cost to taxpayers, local ecosystems, and to loggers themselves. I can acknowledge that the financial success of a company has social and economic benefits within human society. However, I believe that allowing a company to profit at the expense of our ecological environment, degrading the very foundations of terrestrial life, is antithetical to ethical behavior and human prosperity. The following section outlines the economic, ecological, and social costs of clear–cut logging in the Northern United States. I believe that the costs far outweigh any good that politicians, lobbyists, or logging companies could argue come from aggressive clear–cut logging operations. In 1993 logging on public lands in the northern Rockies (Region One) by the United States Forest Service cost the government between $100 million and $200 million more than the amount received for the sale of the timber (Bass, 1996). Compare this with the $2.5 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although there may be a good market and consumer base, it will give A Team Oil to increase the consumer base by offering promotional deals and incentives to new customers. This acquisition of the company also comes with experienced employees that may not need extensive training, but they will only need to be trained on A Team Oil's policies and procedures. The second entry mode would be contract manufacturing in Spain. This entry mode would allow A Team Oil to have a contract between local manufacturers to produce a product to the company's expectations. This entry mode will generate employment for people that live in Spain as well as generate foreign exchange, which can increase revenue. This is a great way to build a strong business relationship in Spain and allow for more expansion. Cross–Cultural Factors Spain is one of the most captivating countries that have contributed to its unique culture and history to the modern world we know as today. Before Spain was established, it was a tag and war between many civilizations that claimed the land of Spain, and it is not until later date around the1500s it established as a country, Spain. The mass production of goods that industrialization has afforded society has made accessibility to citizens increasingly easier. While life has become significantly simpler since the majority of the human population has adopted a sedentary way of living all aspects of life supporting systems have suffered such as the biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and hydrosphere (Miller et al 2015). • 9. Nigeria's Production And Exportation Of Oil While it is only the 11th largest global oil producer, Nigeria is one the most important countries in the oil production community. Due to high quality crude oil, potential for future oil production endeavors, accessible location to the vast Western oil market, and continuing trend of non–nationalization, Nigeria has become the largest oil producer in sub–Saharan Africa. These advantages have developed Nigeria into a country entirely dependent on the production and exportation of oil. In 2007, oil encompassed 99 percent of Nigerian oil exportation earnings, making up 85 percent of the governments total revenue1. Despite 400 billion dollars in total oil revenue collected by the Nigerian government since 1970, the country faces a standard of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to fully understand the mechanics of the clientalistic Nigerian oil governeance, one must first explore the structuring of the institutions tasked with overseeing the industry. First and foremost is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, or the NNPC. The NNPC is the parent company comprised of itself and 12 wholly owned subsidiaries that range from oil trade companies to petrochemical plants. With a workforce of over 9000, the NNPC oversees operation both down and upstream on the Niger river. The NNPC controls such a large percent through its subsidiary the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), an investment firm that acts as the concessionaire for the NNPC, brokering all the oil contracts on the behalf of the Nigerian government. Utilizing its incredibly high amount of government mandate in conjunction with its industry savvy personnel, the NNPC has postured itself as the leading influence over the Nigerian oil sector. Second in the pecking order is the minister of Petroleum, the official tasked with overseeing the NNPC. A position now (and much of history prior to 1999) held by the Nigerian president, the minister forms a tightly knit cabinet of advisors whose will governs the majority of oil–sector policy making. • 11. Land of the Free, Unless You Are a Tree Land of the Free, Unless You are a Tree America has always been a land of opportunity, where a man can cater to the market and make a fortune. None such example is better than the logging industry. In the book "A Walk in the Woods", writer Bill Bryson examines the impact logging has on tree population of not only the Appalachian Trail (where the story takes place), but throughout the United States. He contributes a mass amount of the damage to the logging industry's over logging and the mass deforesting to create the roads to the logging sites. As I read the book I became more and more interested in the effects of logging, so I made it my goal was to find to what extent the logging industry and National Forest Services have contributed to deforestation in the U.S. My first article was a research piece done by the University of Michigan posted in lecture format on the web. The most prevalent fixture in the piece was that "Since 1600, 90% of the virgin forests that once covered much of the lower 48 states have been cleared away." (Global Deforestation) The writer contributes the mass amount of this clearing to the heavy logging and western expansion of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Although there has been recent movements of reforestation that has slowed the pace of logging, this article helped me see that the National Forest Service has seemingly been doing everything it can to not protect the national forests. • 13. Environmental Issues : The Impacts Of Deforestation In... I. Introduction "Forests are the world's air conditioning system, the lungs of the planet, and we are on the verge of switching it off" stated by Prince Charles as cited in (Presidential Lecture, 2008). One of the most common problem that always debated nowadays is about environmental issue that caused by most of human activities. There are many kinds of environmental issues in Indonesia and one of them is deforestation. Deforestation is a long term destruction of forest in order to open new spaces or taken its resource to be used for another alternative uses. Forest provide natural resources, habitats for animal species, prevention of erosion, main key of water cycle process, and watershed protection (Bradford, 2015). In this report, the impacts of deforestation in economics, politics, and international dimension point of view will be scrutinized. II. Explanation of problem Deforestation is a long term degradation of forest by burning or logging the forest in a large amount in order to clear the large area of forest lands which related to ecosystem for non forest use. Since the industrial age started, millions of animals and the other living things have been endangered, about half of the world's original forests have been destroyed. In some tropical rainforests countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Brazil have the most problems with deforestation (eSchooltoday, 2010). • 15. Is Cloud Security Isn 't Enough? 4. Cloud Security Isn't Enough Computers are susceptible to many different attack forms when not properly monitored and protected. Hackers use many different methods to infect your system. Trojans, a type of virus, is one of the most common ways that hackers use to gain access to your system. Trojan viruses are named after the Trojan horse in the Latin epic poem The Aeneid. In this story the Greeks built a giant wooden horse as an apology to the people of troy. Little did the people of Troy know, a large number of soldiers were hiding inside. When the people of troy took the horse inside their castle, the soldiers obliterated the city. This same method is used with viruses. A user downloads a program or piece of software that they need, but harmful code is hidden inside the program. Let's say I downloaded a game from the internet that had a Trojan horse inside of it. The game may actually run and function fully, however, it could be secretly logging my keystrokes or back–dooring my computer. The term backdoor is a process of bypassing authentication into a system, creating a remote connection, and allowing remote access or control from the hacker, all while remaining undetected. When a hacker has your computer back–doored it is possible for them to do anything they want as if they were right there in front of your computer. Hackers, when they successfully have gained access to your computer, often install keyloggers. A keylogger is the process of logging or recording what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Vulnerabilities And Cyber Kill Chain A. ICS Vulnerabilities and Cyber Kill Chain 1. Reconnaissance – Summarize plausible active gathering, passive gathering, and active reconnaissance techniques that the adversary could have executed to gain intelligence on the target in the scenario. Reconnaissance is the act of collecting background research necessary to identify and select targets. (1) Cyber reconnaissance is an important stage of a well–organized cyber–attack, and is also one of the most time–consuming activities. This phase can exploit the information gathered about the target's weaknesses. The type of information the hacker is looking for is how to actually get in: firewall ports that are open, network hosts, services that are running. Critical information that should be obtained during the reconnaissance phase include network information, host information, security policies, and human information. "Active reconnaissance is a type of computer attack in which an intruder engages with the targeted system to gather information about vulnerabilities." (2) This type of information gathering involves doing something on the target network, which could potentially be tracked back to you. The idea of this phase is to gather IP addresses, subnet masks, network topologies, user names, operating systems, firewalls, password requirements and change frequency. Passive reconnaissance is focused more around public information and not engaging with the targeted systems. "Typical passive reconnaissance can include ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Essay Deforestation of The Pacific Northwest Deforestation of the Pacific Northwest One of the most controversial areas associated with the global problem of deforestation is the Pacific Northwest of the US. The problem can be broken down into several issues that all tie in together. These include the near extinction of the Northern Spotted Owl, the "business" aspect of logging versus the environmental aspect, and the role of the government in this problem. In 1973, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed. This enabled the Dept. of Commerce and Dept. of the Interior to place species, either land or marine, as either threatened or endangered. Under these terms species could no longer be hunted, collected, injured or killed. The northern spotted owl falls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Seeing an animal in an artificial environment can certainly not be compared to witnessing an animal in its' natural environment. In my opinion, there can be no price put on the existence of any species on this planet, plant or animal. To think that money has become such an influential part of our society that companies are willing to sacrifice a species in order to make a profit. The northern spotted owl is only one of many species that are on the verge of extinction do to deforestation. Another important consideration in the deforestation of the Pacific North Coast is logging as a business. The investors of a publicly owned company sole concern is the growth of their stock, and this for lumber companies is accomplished by harvesting trees in the most efficient and cost effective manner. Clear–cutting old growth is the best way to accomplish this. This approach leads to quick financial gain but is not best for the long–term or the trees. It is the companies that use this process that is the most unfavorable to the forests and contributes to deforestation the most. Another approach uses wise management techniques to maximize the long– term profit of the forest. Guest speaker Jerry Howe would fall into this category as a private land owner. As a land "steward," he believes he can do what he wants with his land. The term "steward" is used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This plague among the forests is causing harm not only to humans, with the drastic climate change, but this is also causing animals to become extinct. In some ways, deforestation makes our society come across as self–serving, by using the cleared lands for our own personal advantages, such as: construction of homes, businesses, amusement parks, dams, performances of oil extraction, mining and industrial agriculture. It is not just the deforestation itself that clears out the diverse animal populations, but the effects that come along with it. Not only is there animal homes destroyed in the process of deforestation, but the homes of nearly three hundred million people are being destroyed along with it. In the forests, they can find so many resources to help them survive in the wooded areas, such as: plants they use as medicine, freshwater, different berries and fruits they use as food, along with fresh air. When people's homes are being destroyed and they need to relocate this is creating an issue with reduced biodiversity. "Inside forests, climate change is already harming biodiversity, a threat that is likely to increase" (Bradford, Alina). Some problem creating factors of this is the disruption of the water cycle, increased soil erosion and the conversion of the forests. Farmers believe that deforestation can be useful to convert a forest into a site for cattle grazing, turbines, growing soybeans or palm oil, however, in reality, this makes only makes the conditions for planting worse. Logging is a method which has been used over a period of time to better understand subsurface parameters and reservoir conditions. The Acoustic or Sonic log is one such method which is used in combination with density and neutron logs in order to determine these parameters. Full–waveform acoustic logging has advanced significantly in both theory and application in recent years, and these advances have greatly increased the capability of log analysts to measure the physical properties of formations (Paillet et al 1992). This report focuses on the basic application of sonic logs in the petroleum industry and the current advances made in their application. It is also explained how porosity of the rocks are obtained from shaly formations using sonic logs. The principle of sonic logging involves a transmitter and a receiver wherein a signal is sent from the transmitter and the amount of time taken until it has reached the receiver is recorded. The speed of sound in the subsurface depends on the elastic properties of the rock matrix, the porosity of the formations, fluid content and pressure of the formation (Petroleum Transactions, Members AIME 1958). Sonic logging is carried out after the well has been drilled. Background: History of Sonic Logs Sonic logs were first introduced in the 1920s as a part of surface seismic techniques in in oil and gas exploration. Hopefully it will still be able to thrive after the numerous accounts of human destruction. Deforestation in America is a huge problem with devastating affects to humans. The root causes of this travesty are mainly the ongoing need to increase America's economic growth, and the idea of frontierism. These two aspects of deforestation tie together well. Together they help define the thought process that Americans have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frontierism plays a huge role in contributing to deforestation in America because it is enabling various logging companies to rationalize the need for wood. The demand for timber seems to be increasing in America as the rate of our forests decrease. The selfishness involved with this whole idea of frontierism is an outrage. Americans need to be further educated about frontierism and its persuasion on deforestation. This is one of the main problems why America is where they are today as far as the environment goes. An average student at UNH wakes up in the morning and takes a hot shower which uses wood energy from the campus energy source. We write on numerous sheets of paper for notes, waste energy by leaving our lights on, computers running, and music playing. Not to mention the posters on students dorm room walls. All of these everyday factors influence the necessity for deforestation. If just two hundred students shut off their lights when they are not needed and only use their computers when necessary than UNH would save thousands of dollars in energy use. For years upon years companies have wormed their way into the minds of Americans to consume. The companies mask all of the real problems. Many logging companies associated with larger corporations have failed to make Americans aware of the pollution and the increase in toxic gases and waste that is being dispersed every where. All that matters to them is the flow of money that the businesses are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. How Drug And Human Trafficking Differ From Traditional... but this could possibly happen in areas like Munro's 'borderlands', the Golden Triangle, or other places within Southeast Asia. How drug and human trafficking differ from traditional security threats are that unlike traditional external military threats which represent a state or a force, transnational traffickers are a part of a globalise network of groups and individuals. Discussed in the previous paragraph, people that are a part of the trafficking industry range from everyday people and businessmen, to criminal groups; with the only relation they have to each other is the commodity they smuggle. Because of this and the illicit market drive of demand and supply, traditional means of increasing police, destroy criminal groups, and increasing illegal trafficking penalties does little to reduce the demand and supply. In order to reduce the flow of trafficked commodities, states should reduce the supply and demand of the illicit industries. This essay will now discuss the state security challenges of corruption. Corruption is an important factor necessary for smuggling illicit commodities transnationally. Both Munro and Phil Williams support this in their texts, with Williams stating that, corruption is a 'lubricant which allows organised criminal organisations to operate with maximum effectiveness'. As discussed in the previous paragraph, the drug industry provides large amounts of funds to illicit groups. These funds can be used to pay off state officials to not ... • 53. Saving the Old Growth Forests Essay Saving the Old Growth Forests America's Old Growth Forests are an endangered resource that is quickly disappearing. The ancient forests are being unnecessarily wasted, and are growing smaller and smaller with each passing moment. Because the logging industry and the organizations in control of much of the remaining old growth (approx. 5%) are failing to see its value from an ecological/spiritual perspective, the children of tomorrow may never gaze upon the history of today if we do not take a stand now, and prevent the short–sightedness of others from destroying what ultimately belongs to us all. "According to the United Nations, at least 37.5 million acres of rainforest is harvested annually. Despite the relatively small areas of land the rainforests cover, they are home to nearly–half of the 5–10 million plant and animal species on the planet Earth (Brown, 1998)." Many of these are indigenous species that scientists feel may be the key to the development of new medicines which may ultimately lead to cures for some of the world's most terrible diseases. Furthermore the rainforests are the lungs of our planet, without which life would not be possible, and while it's true that younger trees do in fact produce more net oxygen than do mature trees, much of the rainforest is not being replanted, and therefore the destruction taking place there is permanent. For this reason; it is no longer acceptable to stand idly by, while large corporations; such as Weyerhaeuser, destroy what remains of the world's oldest living ecosystems with no regard for the well being of the Earth or the potential wealth of information and/or sheer joy of experience for future generations. There are those who believe that the replanting of harvested timber counteracts any perceived destruction caused by the logging of old growth, and those same people will argue their environmental awareness by trying to sell congress on the idea that they can replant what they remove, that ... • 55. The Future of British Columbia's Top Industry History of forestry in British Columbia British Columbia has relied on forestry as an economical export resource for about 100 years. In B.C we have two main forests, the coastal forest, which contains the dominant species of the western hemlock (figure 1.). But, also contain red cedar and Douglas fir below the 51st parallel. (Text pg. 128– 129) This is typically a very dense sprawling forest, with large trees. Opposed to the interior forest, that mainly is populated with lodge pole pine and spruce trees. These trees are both small and spread further apart from one tree to another. (Figure 2) We as a province mainly harvest from the coastal forests for two main reason. First, here we can harvest in greater volumes per square hector. Providing that we are clear cutting. This is because one there is more trees in a smaller area and two the trees are simply just bigger. And finally the biggest reason is transportation of the lumber. We typically harvest close to water ways so we can cut down the trees and then just place them in the water to transport downstream to lumber and pulp mills. The best way to see the history behind forestry in an economic sense is to look at the soft wood lumber export history knowing that soft wood is what we predominantly find in our coastal forests due to the mild climate that B.C's coast has. In table one we can see the documented exports from B.C in recent history from 1988–2000 and in that time we can actually see the lumber price go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Management of Old–growth Forests in the Pacific Northwest When westward expansion brought settlers to the Northwest in the 1800s, they discovered that coniferous trees "forty feet in circumference [that] shot two–hundred feet straight up" flourished in the forests of the Pacific coast (Ervin 55). These early pioneers found the opportunity for economic growth in logging these vast forests of towering trees unlike any they had seen before. Today, the timber industry still remains the backbone of economic support for Washington, Oregon, and northwestern California, but an inevitable conflict has arisen between humans and our environment. A struggle over the control of the use of the old–growth forests threatens the balance of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On July 23, 1990, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the pressure of environmentalists and scientific studies, listed the spotted owl as a "threatened" species, one step away from "endangered," and entitled themselves to protecting the owl from hunting, trading, or federal action that could destroy its breeding or feeding grounds (Carey 13). This listing came on the heels of years of extensive studies of the spotted owl and its habitat conducted by environmental groups, the timber industry, and governmental researchers. These studies resulted in recommendations, such as the one made in early 1990 by a committee headed by the U.S. Forest Service's chief, Jack Ward Thomas, calling for "30–40 percent of public forests to be exempted from logging to protect the remaining 3000–6000 owl pairs" in the Northwest. Yet, by late 1990, there had been no decrease in the rate of logging to accommodate the owl (Abate 8). As early as 1971, biologists had warned the Forest Service and the timber industry that old–growth logging could endanger the spotted owl, which is a slow breeder. Studies have shown that the spotted owl's major prey, the red tree vole and the Northern flying squirrel, thrive in the environment of the protective old–growth forest and that when the forest that an owl lives in is logged, it will travel hundreds of miles to feed in distant ancient forests. • 59. Analysis Of The Book ' Animals By Simon Rich Synthesis Essay Animals by Simon Rich is an outstanding short story which takes a unique perspective on the everyday life in a classroom. The story is written from the point of view of a hamster who spends his tortured life entrapped in a cage. From the first point in this story it is clear that the purpose of the writing is not to understand the hamster, but rather to analyse the different actions of the people, and to discover that how they act towards the hamsters reflects on their character. It is curious to view the everyday interactions of people through a different set of eyes, that is done by humanizing the narrator's perspective. Based on the actions of the many people and the treatment of the class pet, the author suggests that human nature is very much a product of the financial circumstances a person is subjected to. There are a couple of key characters in this story, the first of which is Simon. He is just one of many strikingly similar students in homeroom 2k. Simon, like many of the students is irresponsible, and unsympathetic towards the hamsters. Simon jeopardizes the lives of the hamsters by attempting to joke around instead of completing his assigned task, which involves giving them food and water. The majority of the story takes place in a private school, and the reader can make the assumption that the student's parents are wealthy. The author portrays simon as well as the other kids in a bad light, that they are, by default, poorly behaved and somewhat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. The Yaak Valley Of Northern Montana The Yaak Valley of northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the continental United States. It has cores of roadless wilderness that have been untouched by human activity and I believe that they should remain as such. The biodiverse ecosystem of the Yaak Valley benefits its human and non–human inhabitants and we should protect it from the detrimental effects of human activities, especially the violent changes caused by large timber companies and their practice of clear–cut logging. There are sustainable and pragmatic solutions that would address both human needs and protecting the biodiverse ecosystem. The Yaak Valley of Northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse areas of untouched wilderness in the contiguous United States. This is due in large part to its geographical position between the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the dry and mountainous Northern Rockies. According to the Yaak Valley Forest Council, the valley is home to a variety of rare species including but not limited to: inland redband rainbow trout, bull trout, wolverine, lynx, fisher, coeur d 'alene salamander, great gray owl, westslope cutthroat trout, flammulated owl, short–head sculpin, boreal owl, peregrine falcon, wavy moonwort, kidney–leaved violet, bog birch, and Grizzly Bears (About The Yaak, 2015). Loggers Culture Creating a Culture of Renewal: Saving Jobs, Saving Resources The topic of forest management in America has been one of the most controversial and long–standing issues between loggers, environmentalist groups, and forestry workers. All parties have several valid arguments regarding their position on forest management politics and how they have impacted the world's forests and ecosystems. The question is how can these groups come to a compromise that will satisfy all parties involved? Loggers have a long and proud history of working in the woods. They provide lumber for building homes and products for everyday consumers. In the event that a fire does start, suppression activities would be carried out faster and more effectively than those areas that have gone without treatment. Proof of this can be found within a study that was done after the 2002 Biscuit Fire that happened within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in Southern Oregon. Scientists on a research team studied the damage of the fire in areas that had previously been treated by having ground and ladder fuels removed via thinning/cutting and prescribed underburning. These areas showed the least tree mortality of any other areas within the fire. The areas with the highest tree mortality included those that had been thinned but ground fuels had not been removed as well as areas that had had no prior treatment. David Peterson, a research biologist stated, "Biologists have known this in principal for many years...the Biscuit Fire gave us a chance to validate the effectiveness of on–the–ground fuel treatments" (USDA Forest Service). It seems fairly evident that there needs to be a balanced compromise regarding how the subject of forest management. The prevention or management of kicks and/or fluid loss occurrence during drilling operations is crucial, particularly in deepwater drilling activities due to the complexity of equipment and operations. Normally well control failure occurrences could cost the oil and gas industry billions of dollars in a year due to non–productive time (NPT) and/or blowout incident, and affect the safety of drilling personnel. In addition to the complex operation involved with deepwater drilling, many deepwater wells have greater depths and narrow pressure margins between pore pressure and ... (2016) experimentally investigated kick occurrence based on the changes in mass flow rate, pressure, density and conductivity of fluid downhole and concluded that the parameters have the potential to improve the kick detection system with higher precision than the surface detection system. Vajargah and van Oort (2015) developed an algorithm that automatically selects a best well control response to influx in a drilling operation running a constant Bottomhole pressure (CBHP) managed pressure drilling (MPD); however, the paper did not clarify how this method will be implemented while running CBHP MPD operation in the field. Trivedi (2014) proposed an innovative kick detection system that uses a small mud rerouting section consisting of two plates and located just above the BHA. When there is an entrained formation fluid bubbles/droplet in the flow, the medium between the two plates will undergo alteration and form a magnetic impulse registering as abnormality in fluid flow, hence detecting kick. However, this technology has many limitations, including cuttings intrusion and capacitance limitations due to plate spacing. Ahmed et al. (2016) proposed a new advanced early kick detection method that uses seven parameters data (classified as instantaneous drilling parameters e.g. pit gain, flow rate, ROP etc. and lagging parameters e.g. total gas connection gas etc.) from mud logging while drilling; however, this method was field specific (Offshore Nile Delta ... This method is highly debatable as to whether it uses too much water in areas that have fragile water sources as well as whether the process contaminates surrounding water sources. The State of Texas is a hotspot for hydraulic fracturing because of the amount of shale formations which can produce oil and natural gas. Texas is a dry state which often experiences severe droughts. There is debate about if Texas has sufficient water supplies to support hydraulic fracturing. Since hydraulic fracturing is a fairly new process, there needs to be more research to determine the realistic affect it has on the environment. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of salmon streams nationwide, when it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole. The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the past several decades. Recently, they have become more responsible about clear–cut logging. Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future wildlife habitat and logging efforts. However, this doesn't help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of massive trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs have been lost. Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed. So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want to protect this owl. How will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The spotted owl needs a home. One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of jobs. There were 21,000 jobs lost during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999).
