This document provides tips and guidelines for creating better presentations. It discusses understanding communication theory and developing skills with computers, vocabulary and photography. PowerPoint is presented as a tool to support presentations, not replace the presenter. Non-verbal communication and body language are important. The document stresses the importance of planning, preparation and practice. Visual aids like images, graphs and tables should enhance the content without being cluttered. Effective delivery requires practicing techniques like maintaining eye contact and avoiding distracting mannerisms.

15. Key message…
Who is it for ?
doctors, students,
health care workers
What they will do ?
learn new technique, study
syllabus
improve patient care
16. Road map your talk…
Direction of talk
Points for emphasis
Evoke interest / lead

Graphs,Tables & Charts
- do not clutter
- colour contrast
- explanatory key*
* the gist or statistical conclusion
should be summarised in a line or two !
28. Scatter diagram showing the linear relationship
between peak pressure of the great toe in the left foot
and weight in 90 subjects.
Formula :
Peak pressure =151.5 + 1.41 x weight
The regression coefficient or slope of the line,
estimated by 1.41 (95% CI 0.67 to 2.15) kPa per kg of weight,
implies that, on average, as a subject’s weight increases by 1 kg,
the peak pressure under the great toe in the left foot increases by about 1.4 kPa;
the slope is significantly different from 0 (p < 0.001)
so that the subject’s weight is an important predictor
of the peak pressure under the great toe.
29. Body wt vs. peak pressure on hallux
…there is a linear
rise in pressure
with increased
chances of
ulceration

TEXT CONSIDERATIONS
Margin width: at least 1.5" all sides
Single concept per page
Concise phrases, no punctuation
Rule of 7: < 7 words/ line
7 lines/ page
Parallel construction of lists
SPELLING, SPELLNIG, SPELLING
Better still: rule of 5
35. Mixing Important / Unimportant Words
Ex: Computers in hospitals
The isoefficiency and the scalability
metrics of a parallel algorithm are
crucial
The typical parallel computers of the
future will have thousands of CPUs
and terabytes of RAM
36. Hospital Computerisation
Crucial dynamics
- isoefficiency
- scalability of function
Future systems
- thousands of CPUs
- terabytes of RAM
38. Powerpoint evils
Backgrounds, Text, and in
Particular Animation Should
Enhance the Information Being
Presented, Not Detract From It

45. Slide rules:
Use only key words
A slide is an aid; not a CRUTCH !
An AV aid should not
replace the teacher !
Capitals only to emphasize,
all caps is like shouting
at audience !
46. Graphics :
Clip art
Cartoons
Images
Movie clips
…to drive a point home !
50. Written matter…
Change sequence
horizontal, vertical,
oblique
Use slide design
Keeps audience interest !
Written matter on slide
is not a visual
!
Subconsciously !
59. Transactional Analysis (TA)
theory of behaviour
formulated by Dr Eric Berne, 1958
based on clinical experience
Transaction, verbal exchange
Role playing
parent / adult / child
62. Voice & Delivery
Dress appropriately
Greeting
Introduction
Speak to the back of
the room
Be natural
63. Voice: conversational style
variation in pitch,
rate & volume
avoid monotonous speech
repeating words, interrupting or
pausing mid sentences
swallowing words or stuttering
64. Delivery …
Pause ,to give emphasis
Avoid jokes :
unless you are
a natural
may offend
Scan the room
Listen up !Listen up !
65. Effective nonverbal
communication
Maintain eye contact.
Don’t look down
or
shift your eyes around.
Gestures:
spontaneous, unrehearsed & relaxed.
keep still, avoid fidgeting
or smile out of context.
66. Hearing Vs Listening
Hearing – Physical process,
natural, passive
Listening – Physical as well
as mental process, active,
learned process, a skill
Listening is hard.
You must choose to participate in the process
of listening.
67. Cultural
Listening barriers
Physical discomfort
Noise
distance
State of mind
Ambiguous language
Jargon
Cultural differences
Social norms
Physical Psychological
Linguistic
-evolution pic from folder
Computers have reduced the need for personal communicatoin but with a little effort this trend can be reversed.
-Gives a brief outline of the talk
The audience will have an idea what they are in for
The beginning should be very attractive- start with an example, short case history , the “Reader’s Digest “ pattern
A short paper can stress only 2-3 points
Most of all, you should have the belief that the work being presented is meaningful
Start with an idea/or verify a theory in your practice
The raw material consisting of cases, references and articles
-most PC configurations are sufficient for medical work unless there are many movie clips to be stored
-adequate hard disc should be planned for storage of images
Always have back up CDs for images and presentations
Its essential to have a CD burner built into the PC
-X ray storage, either hard copy or digital
-an easy way is to make folders for different topics and store images
-pic of storage solution,
SVGA , super video graphics array

Journals are the commonest source of academic work, the reason being that a particular procedure or condition needs to be replicated in different conditions before it can find its way into a textbook
The richest source of information is the net, skills of extracting information are learnt along the way rather than taught
Work based on clinical practice is mostly need based rather than pure academic thirst, say the results from various methods of treating back pain as against a topic such as this !
Personal communication with a colleague is a rich experience , as it is more elaborate than a paper lasting 8mins and is brimming with practical advice ! A good friend will warn you of the pitfalls and give many useful tips.
Ex: Vertebroplasty, 2001, a trip to the US
discussion with a friend who is a pain specialist
reprint of a couple of articles
a Vertebroplasty kit
Combination of all these
Ex: heel defect
visiting plastic surgeon from Mumbai
use of F/c flap fromback of thigh
referred atlas of flaps
The result : Gluteal thigh flap
Surfer in tunnel- don’t drown us with information, please !
Tell them what you did, not what they can read from books !
Describe the classification used in the study
Pic of technique- cartoon trying to blow up the lab
Try to get pix of different cases since you canot show all your work in a short paper
Nuts & Bolts, the practical aspects
-too much data
If you need to show the extensive data analysed highlite the relevant points
Pic oof railway timetable
If the audience is reading the slide who is listening to your talk ?
Follow rules or else !
-a good paper doesn’t need a lot of animation
- Pic of Aishwarya
Basics – slate , child learning, building blocks,
It is difficult to find contrasting lerrering for multi coloured backgrounds
Most computer programmes can generate 16million colors- don’t feel obliged to use all of them !
-kids at school like a teacher who writes boldly
-pic of bird watcher with binoculars !
- The bottom line : the words must be legibe from back of the room
Man with binoculars- pic
Take care not to over do it !
-contrast can be enhanced as projection tends to lighten the picture.
Brains and the orthopod- the retarded face/ Freud’s pic
There’s notihng right with the right brain,
There’s nothing left in the left brain !
If you are seeing a picture of freud there’s not much I can tell you, but if you are seeing a woman there you really need to listen up !
Example of the power of persuation - HitLer
-watch mechanism
-picture of a hall full of people
-unless you are a natural like, Gurava Reddy
- Do not talk to a single person it might be intimidating, look around the room
It is difficult to find contrasting lerrering for multi coloured backgrounds
