PPI:
 (PPI) News agency founded in June 1956 as Pakistan Press
Association (PPA). The name was changed in 1968. It was
first started by Mr. Muzzam Ali, the Chief Editor of Associated
Press of Pakistan (APP). The agency objective was to provide
competition to APP's monopoly. It began its service by hand,
only in Karachi.
 PPA also built up a network of correspondents in the smaller
cities and towns in Pakistan. This was in contrast to APP,
which had coverage in a limited number of large cities. For
foreign news the agency signed up with the Agence France-
Presse (AFP) in 1957, and a year later became the first Asian
partner of DPA. PPA also posted a correspondent in the
Middle East, an area of special interest to Pakistani
newspapers.
 In 1958, the agency installed the teleprinters in the offices of
its clients. By 1960, PPI had subscribers in all the major
newspapers centers of Pakistan, namely Karachi, Lahore,
Rawalpindi and Dacca.
ONLINE NEWS AGENCY:
 It was in this background that Mr. Mohsin Baig, the company's
Chairman thought of setting up a news network worthy of
credibility at home as well as in the foreign world. Mr Baig, who
has been a journalist in his own right and now Chief Executive
Online initiated this project in January 1999. OINN is different
from contemporary Pakistani news agencies in many ways.
 There has been a very strong feeling in the outside world that
there is no credible and independent source of information in
Pakistan, chiefly because the electronic media, including radio
and television networks are state- owned.
 Online is the first-ever Pakistani news agency operating English
and Urdu news services simultaneously along with
comprehensive national and international photo coverage. Our
news reports often appear in the national and international print
media while our photographs dominate news pages in most of
the newspapers coming out from Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore,
Peshawar and Quetta besides some leading papers in the Middle
East, Europe and the United States.
APP:
 The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) started its
life in 1947 with the independence of Pakistan.
Initially it was run through a Trust, but owing to
financial bottlenecks, it was taken over by the
Government through an Ordinance called;
“Associated Press of Pakistan (taking over)
Ordinance 1961″,
 on 15th June 1961, to put it on a sound financial
footing. APP was later converted into Corporation
on October 19, 2002 through an Ordinance
renaming it as Associated Press of Pakistan
Corporation (APPC) and lending a status of semi
government media government.
UPP:
 United Press Of Pakistan
 UPP United Press Of Pakistan Ltd, is located at
Abdullah Haroon Road in Karachi. UPP is involving
in publishing, printing of books and other corporate

PPA:
 Pakistan Press Agency (PPA) was established in 1990 in

served several reputed international news organizations for
more than ten years in Ankara, Vienna and Beirut)) as its
Chief Executive and Mr. M. N. Deen, (who had retired as
director of Press & Information Department, Government of
Pakistan) as its managing editor. (Unfortunately Mr. Deen
expired in 1998).
 Initially PPA started its work with Jang Group of Newspapers
for which Mr. Jamal had already worked for years.
 Apart from more than a dozen Urdu newspapers, several
English dailies, including Pakistan Observer (Islamabad), The
News International (Karachi), Jang London, Frontier Post
(Peshawar) and Daily Statesman published PPA stories. In
1998 PPA published its first book “Who is Who in Pakistan”
edited by Akhtar Jamal. PPA has two main offices in Pakistan,
Islamabad and Karachi.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS AGENCIES:
 AFP
 REUTERS
 AP
AFP:
 Agence France-Presse (AFP) is an international news agency headquartered in Paris, France. Founded in 1944,
AFP is the third largest news agency in the world, after the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters. Journalists of the
French Resistance established the AFP in the headquarters of the former "Office Français d'Information", a Vichy
news agency, following the liberation of Paris.
 Currently, the CEO is Emmanuel Hoog (fr) and the News Director is Michèle Léridon. AFP has regional offices in
Nicosia, Montevideo, Hong Kong, and Washington, D.C., and bureaux in 150 countries. AFP transmits news in
French, English, Arabic,Portuguese , Spanish, and German.
 AFP is a global news agency delivering fast, in-depth coverage of the events shaping our world from wars and
conflicts to politics, sports, entertainment and the latest breakthroughs in health, science and technology.
 Agence France-Presse (AFP) is the oldest news agency in the world, and one of the three largest, together with
Associated Press and Reuters. It is the largest French news agency. Founded by Charles-Louis Havas (as
Agence Havas) to provide news about France to foreign customers, the agency was suppressed duringGerman
occupation in the Second World War. After the liberation of Paris, journalists from the French Resistance quickly
set up the agency as the voice of liberated France, under the name Agence France-Presse. Established after the
war as a state enterprise, AFP now operates independently, with its statute demanding that it not be controlled by
any ideological, political, or economic group.
 AFP continues to be based in Paris, with regional centers inWashington, Hong Kong, Nicosia, and Montevideo
as well as bureaus in 110 countries. It transmits news in French, English, Arabic, Spanish, German, Portuguese,
and Russian. With its "guarantee of excellence"—editorial quality and reliability, the guiding principle of speed
and accuracy, diversity and dynamism, innovative multimedia products, and a long service tradition— AFP aims
to maintain and strengthen its position as one of the greatest news agencies in the world. With such a vision
comes responsibility, and mere assurance of independence may not be sufficient to succeed; a standard of
excellence in morality, truth, and goodness, is also needed.
REUTERS:
 Reuters was set up in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter, a German-born
immigrant. He opened an office in the City of London which transmitted
stock market quotations between London and Paris via the new Calais-
Dover cable. Two years earlier he had used pigeons to fly stock prices
between Aachen and Brussels. Reuters, as the agency soon became
known, eventually extended its service to the whole British press as well
as to other European countries. It also expanded to include general and
economic news from across the world. Its reputation rapidly gained
ground thanks to a series of major scoops.
The one Reuters journalists love to cite most was in 1865 when the
company was first in Europe with news of US President Lincoln's
assassination. Advances in overland telegraphs and undersea cables
allowed the news wire to expand into the far east in 1872 and South
America in 1874. In 1883 Reuters started transmitting messages
electrically to London newspapers and in 1923 it pioneered the use of
radio to transmit news internationally. The new owners, the British
national and regional press, formed the Reuters Trust, with independent
trustees who must safeguard the group's independence and neutrality
AP:
 he Associated Press (AP) is an American multinational nonprofit news
agency headquartered in New York City that operates as a cooperative,
unincorporated association. The AP is owned by its contributing
newspapers and radio and television stations in the United States, all of
which contribute stories to the AP and use material written by its staff
journalists. Most of the AP staff are union members and are represented
by the Newspaper Guild, which operates under the Communications
Workers of America, which operates under the AFL–CIO.
 As of 2007, news collected by the AP was published and republished by
more than 1,700 newspapers, in addition to more than 5,000 television
and radio broadcasters. The photograph library of the AP consists of
over 10 million images. The AP operates 243 news bureaus in 120
countries. It also operates the AP Radio Network, which provides
newscasts twice hourly for broadcast and satellite radio and television
stations. Many newspapers and broadcasters outside the United States
are AP subscribers, paying a fee to use AP material without being
contributing members of the cooperative.
