NEWS AGENCIES
Introduction:
 News agency, also called press agency, press association, wire
service, or news service, organization that gathers, writes, and
distributes news from around a nation or the world to newspapers,
periodicals, radio and television broadcasters, government agencies,
and other users.
 It does not generally publish news itself but supplies news to its
subscribers, who, by sharing costs, obtain services they could not
otherwise afford. All the mass media depend upon the agencies for the
bulk of the news, even including those few that have extensive news-
gathering resources of their own.

APP(Associated Press ofPakistan)
The Associated Press of Pakistan started its life in 1947, with the
independence of Pakistan. Initially it was run through a trust, but owing to
financial problems, it was taken over by the Government through an
Ordinance called; "Associated Press of Pakistan (taking over) Ordinance
1961", on 15th June 1961.
It is a subscriber to both AP and Reuters,based in London. APP has News
Exchange Agreements with 37 Foreign News Agencies and more than 500
correspondents.
PPI(Pakistan PressInternational)
(PPI) is a news agency founded in June 1956 as Pakistan Press
Association
(PPA). The name was changed in 1968. It was first started by Mr.
Muazzam Ali, the Chief Editor of Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).The
agency objective was to provide competition to APP's monopoly. All
major newspapers, radio and television stations in Pakistan and a number
of international news and database organizations subscribe to PPI's text,
photo and audio news services in English and Urdu.
INP(Independent NewsPakistan)
INP is among Pakistan’s leaders in online news and information delivery.
Staffed 24 hours, seven days a week by a dedicated staff in INP Capital
headquarters in Islamabad, and in bureaus Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi,
Quetta & Azad Kashmir, with more than 1000 correspondents all over
Pakistan and the world. INP relies heavily on its team of almost 100
news professionals. INP.net.pk features the latest technologies, to

Sabah stands for South Asian Broadcasting Agency. Its slogan is

NNI(News NetworkInternational)
News Network International (NNI) is a private-operated national news
agency of Pakistan. It was established in 1992 and headquartered in G-7
zero point, Islamabad. It have also offices in other major cities of Pakistan
including Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar. It have hundreds
of reporters. It provides services in both languages Urdu and English.
ANN(Asia NewsNetwork)
The Asia News Network (ANN) is one of the world’s biggestmedia
alliances. Founded in 1999 with seven members. ANN now
comprises 21 leading media, mostly leading national English-
language daily, from South, Southeast and Northeast Asia. ANN’s
main activities are daily exchanges of news, photos and a host of
other collaborations. Mr Zaffar Abbas is the Chairperson of ANN
along with the Editor of Dawn (Pakistan). ANN is headquartered at
the offices of the Nation Multimedia Group in Bangkok. Its members
nations are: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan,
Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka,
Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
OINN(Online International NewsNetwork)
OINN is Pakistan's leading news agency. It is Pakistan's first bilingual news and
photo wire service, dedicated to issues that are neglected by the mainstreammedia.
It focuses on national and global processes affecting the economic, social and
political development of the people of Pakistan. Mr. Mohsin Baig, its Chief
Executive initiated this project in January 1999. Online with its Central office in
New York and head office in Islamabad is a news network that has its bureaus at
each provincial headquarters in Pakistan besides some major cities including
Muzaffarabad, Hyderabad, Faisalabad, and Multan. Online has its correspondents
in important world capitals and major cities including Washington, New York,

Sharp Eye is Pakistan's Independent International News Agency
Established in January 2000. With the aim to provide true news

modern lines following the modern and latest standards; "Sharp
Eye" is working under the supervision of its founder Mian
Muhammad Azhar Amin. He is renowned Journalist of Pakistan
and has the experience of working for Pakistani as well as foreign
Newspapers, News Agencies and a TV Channel. In the light ofhis
Experience he felt the need for establishment of an independent
news agency that could be a source for presenting true news to

 (PTI) is the largest news agency in India. It is
headquartered in New Delhi and is a nonprofit
cooperative among more than 500 Indian newspapers and

 It employs over 400 journalists and 500 part-
time correspondents located in most of the
district headquarters in the country.
 A few correspondents are based in major capitals and

 The Xinhua News Agency (English pronunciation:
‘’ɪnˈhwɑ’’)is the official press agency of the People's
Republic of China.
 It is the biggest and most influential media organization
in China.
 It operates more than 170 foreign bureaus worldwide, and
maintains 31 bureaus in China—one for each province, plus
a military bureau.
 It is the sole channel for the distribution of important
news related to the Communist Party and Chinese central
government.
TASS(Russian NewsAgency)
 Since 1904 TASS has been Russia’s leading news agency. For
more than 112 years, TASS has ceaselessly strived to deliver
the latest and most accurate news from around the world.
 Trustworthiness is TASS’ key asset for which it has always
been famous for, and this feature remains the news agency’s
highest priority for all the products it delivers.
 More than 5,000 corporate subscribers across Russia and the
world are recipients of TASS products. Among them are 1,000
mass media organizations, 200 diplomatic missions, 250
financial companies and banks, and 200 industrial
enterprises, research and educational organizations and
libraries.
SPUTNIK
 Sputnik (pronounced spʊtnɪk)is a news agency, news websites
and radio broadcast service established by the Russian
government-controlled news agency. Headquartered in
Moscow, Sputnik has regional editorial offices in Washington,
Cairo, Beijing, London and Edinburgh. It focuses on global
politics and economics and is geared entirely towards a non-
Russian audience.
 Sputnik currently operates news websites, featuring
reporting and commentary, in over 30 languages including
English, Spanish, Polish, Serbian, and several others.
Alongside its news content, Sputnik also sells other products
including photo essays, live streaming, infographics, and
public opinion surveys.
IRNA
 The Islamic Republic News Agency, Persian: ‫ازگربخ‬‫ر‬‫ی‬
‫یمالسا‬
‫یروهمج‬ or IRNA, is the official news agency of
the Islamic Republic of Iran.
 It is government-funded and controlled under the
Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
 As of 2010, the Managing Director of IRNA
is Mohammad Khodaddi.
SANA
 The Syrian Arab News Agency(SANA)
 It is a public-owned media organization linked to the
Ministry of Information.
 It was established in June 1965.
UPI(United PressInternational)
 United Press International is a leading provider of news,
photos and information to millions of readers around the globe
via UPI.com and its licensing services.
 With a history of reliable reporting dating back to 1907,
today's UPI is a credible source for the most important stories
of the day, continually updated - a one-stop site for U.S. and
world news, as well as entertainment, trends, science, health
and stunning photography. UPI also provides insightful
reports on key topics of geopolitical importance, including
energy and security.

Polish PressAgency
 Polish Press Agency is the single largest source of news from
Poland with over 250 reporters and 40 photojournalists
delivering accurate and comprehensive news to leading media

entrepreneurs in and outside of Poland.
 Polish Press Agency continues the work of the Polish
Telegraphic Agency PATestablished in 1918 by a group of
Polish journalists who took over the two bureaus of the Vienna
Correspondent Office in Cracow and Lvov (when Poland
regained independence after 123 years of partitions).
 The Polish Press Agency has 22 local branch officessupported

AFP(Agency France Presse)
 It is the national news agency of France. It is not only limited
to France but is working as an international news agency.
 It is the third largest news agency in the world.
 It was founded in 1835 by a Parisian translator
and advertising agent, Charles-Louis Havas as AgenceHavas.
 It is the oldest news agency in the world, and one of the three
largest, together with Associated Press and Reuters. It is one of
the world’s great wire news services. The agency was
suppressed during German occupation in the Second World
War and established after the war as a state enterprise.
 It transmits news in French, English, Arabic, Spanish, German,
Portuguese, and Russian.
REUTERS
 The Reuter agency was established in 1851 by Paul Julius
Reuter in Britain at the London . The Reuter's Telegram
Company was later launched.
 The company initially covered commercial news, serving
banks, brokerage houses, and business firms. Reuters was the
first to report Abraham Lincoln's assassination. It operates in
more than 200 cities in 94 countries in about 20 languages.
 Transmits news in:
English, French, Arabic, Spanish, German, Italian,Portuguese,
Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Russian and Chinese.
 The Reuters News Agency employs some 2,500 journalistsand
600 photojournalists in about 200 locations worldwide.
AP(Associated Press)
 The Associated Press (AP) is an American
multinational nonprofit news agency headquartered in
New York City that operates as a cooperative,
unincorporated association.
 The AP is owned by its contributing newspapers and
radio and television stations in the United States.
 As of 2007, news collected by the AP was published
and republished by more than 1,700 newspapers.

  • 2. Introduction:  News agency, also called press agency, press association, wire service, or news service, organization that gathers, writes, and distributes news from around a nation or the world to newspapers, periodicals, radio and television broadcasters, government agencies, and other users.  It does not generally publish news itself but supplies news to its subscribers, who, by sharing costs, obtain services they could not otherwise afford. All the mass media depend upon the agencies for the bulk of the news, even including those few that have extensive news- gathering resources of their own.

  • 6. APP(Associated Press ofPakistan) The Associated Press of Pakistan started its life in 1947, with the independence of Pakistan. Initially it was run through a trust, but owing to financial problems, it was taken over by the Government through an Ordinance called; "Associated Press of Pakistan (taking over) Ordinance 1961", on 15th June 1961. It is a subscriber to both AP and Reuters,based in London. APP has News Exchange Agreements with 37 Foreign News Agencies and more than 500 correspondents.
  • 7. PPI(Pakistan PressInternational) (PPI) is a news agency founded in June 1956 as Pakistan Press Association (PPA). The name was changed in 1968. It was first started by Mr. Muazzam Ali, the Chief Editor of Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).The agency objective was to provide competition to APP's monopoly. All major newspapers, radio and television stations in Pakistan and a number of international news and database organizations subscribe to PPI's text, photo and audio news services in English and Urdu.

It is one of the world’s great wire news services. The agency was suppressed during German occupation in the Second World War and established after the war as a state enterprise.  It transmits news in French, English, Arabic, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Russian.
