specific character, and
acknowledges particular sins.
They may be of such a nature as
only to be brought before God,
they may be wrongs that should be
confessed before individuals who
have suffered injury through them,
or they may be of a general kind
that should be made known in the
congregation of the people. But all
confession should be definite and
to the point, acknowledging the
very sins of which you are guilty.

13. QUICK RECAP
Sin is the transgression of the law. Temptation is not a sin
Our only definition of sin is that given in the word of God; it is "the
transgression of the law;"
Sin is the sinner's individual act. Before sin exists in the heart, the
consent of the will must be given,
The commission of a known sin silences the witnessing voice of the
Spirit and separates the soul from God
Before the light comes, there is no sin, for there is no light for them
to reject.‘
We shall not be held accountable for the light that has not reached
our perception, but for that which we have resisted and refused. A
man could not apprehend the truth which had never been presented
to him, and therefore could not be condemned for light he had never
had

that we are condemned
sinners from conception

Does ones physical

God? Is sin a state of

15. Parallelism :The biblical poetry of Psalms uses parallelism as
their primary poetic device. Parallelism is a kind of rhyme, in
which an idea is developed by the use of repetition, synonyms, or
opposites.
Synonymous parallelism involves two lines expressing essentially
the same idea.
An example of synonymous parallelism:
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be
afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
Two lines expressing oppositesis known as antithetic parallelism.
An example of antithetic parallelism:
The LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way
of the wicked will perish. (Psalm 1:6)
Background and Context Psalm 51
16. 1. Have mercy upon me, O God,
according to thy lovingkindness:
2. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity
3. For I acknowledge my transgressions:
4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,
that thou mightest be justified when thou
speakest,
according unto the multitude of thy tender
mercies blot out my transgressions.
,and cleanse me from my sin.
and my sin is ever before me.
and done this evil in thy sight:
and be clear when thou judgest
19. (Psalms 51:5) (KJV)
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did
my mother conceive me.
Shapen: the Hebrew word used is chûl chı̂yl (pronounced: khool, kheel):
which means to twist or whirl
Iniquity: the Hebrew word used is ‛âvôn ‛âvôn (pronounced: aw-vone', aw-
vone' ): which means perversity[1], that is, (moral) evil
Sin: the Hebrew word used is chêtò' (pronounced: khate ): which means a
crime or its penalty
Conceive: the Hebrew word used is yâcham (pronounced: yaw-kham'):
which means the act of becoming pregnant; fertilization of an ovum by a
spermatozoon
In light of these key words used in Psalm 51:5, it can be stated as;
20. (Psalms 51:5) (KJV)
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did
my mother conceive me.
“Behold I was twisted or twirled in perversity
and evil as a penalty through my mother when
she became pregnant with me”

thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15. For he
shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong
drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
Psalm 22
9. But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me

24. Psalm 58
1. Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye
sons of men? 2. Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your
hands in the earth. 3. The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as
soon as they be born, speaking lies.
Genesis 6
1. And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and
daughters were born unto them,
2. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they
took them wives of all which they chose.
4. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons
of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the
same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
25. Isaiah 59
2. But your iniquities have between you and your God, and your
have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Abel had led a pastoral life, dwelling in tents or booths, and the descendants of Seth
followed the same course, counting themselves "strangers and pilgrims on the earth,"
seeking "a better country, that is, an heavenly." Hebrews 11:13, 16.For some time the two
classes remained separate. The race of Cain, spreading from the place of their first
settlement, dispersed over the plains and valleys where the children of Seth had dwelt; and
the latter, in order to escape from their contaminating influence, withdrew to the
mountains, and there made their home. So long as this separation continued, they
maintained the worship of God in its purity. But in the lapse of time they ventured, little by
little, to mingle with the inhabitants of the valleys. This association was productive of the
worst results. "The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair." The
children of Seth, attracted by the beauty of the daughters of Cain's descendants, displeased
the Lord by intermarrying with them. Many of the worshipers of God were beguiled into
sin by the allurements that were now constantly before them, and they lost their peculiar,
holy character. …..The children of Seth went [p. 82] "in the way of Cain" (Jude 11); they
fixed their minds upon worldly prosperity and enjoyment and neglected the commandments
of the Lord. Men "did not like to retain God in their knowledge;" they "became vain in
their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened." Romans 1:21. Therefore "God
gave them over to a mind void of judgment." Verse 28, margin. Sin spread abroad in the
earth like a deadly leprosy.

30. Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man
sin entered into the world,
and death by sin; and so
death passed upon all men,
for that all have sinned:
31. The scriptures say that death has
passed upon all men for all have
sinned. How so? Adam was the
representative of mankind, the
head of the human race. At the
moment Adam sinned all
humanity was represented within
him. Therefore Adam condemned
not only himself at the moment he
sinned, but he condemned all
humanity to certain death. At the
moment of Adam’s sin all his
posterity became sinners through
him. Our temporal death is a
consequence of Adam’s sin.
However death is only one
indicator of Adam’s sin.
32. The following texts explain
the condition of man as a
result of Adam’s sin.
Genesis 8:21 “for the imagination
of man's heart is evil from his
youth”
Ephesians 2:3, we, "were by nature
the children of wrath."
These text clearly say that our
fallen natures are evil and
deserved nothing but wrath. Our
fallen natures are not righteous,
and the only just response to our
natures is destruction. Our
inheritance from Adam is definitely
not good.
33. Romans 5: 18.
Therefore as by the offence
of one judgment came
upon all men to
condemnation.
This text states rather
unequivocally that all men
are condemned because
of Adam's sin.
34. "Adam sinned, and the children of
Adam share his guilt and its
consequences." (Faith and Work, p.
88)
"The inheritance of children is that
of sin. Sin has separated them from
God... As related to the first Adam,
men receive from him nothing but
guilt and the sentence of death."
(Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, p. 236)
"Fallen human beings... were heirs
of guilt, under sentence of eternal
death." (Ibid., vol. 12, p. 61)
"These dear children received from
Adam an inheritance of
disobedience, of guilt and death."
(Ibid., vol. 13, p. 14)
35.
36. Has the whole story
been told? Or is
this only half of the
total picture? Do
we need to look a
little further before
coming to final
conclusions on this
subject?
37. There are some rather
unique texts in the
New Testament which
speak of Christ's work
for the whole race of
mankind. Normally
we read of how the
atonement applies to
the individual sinner,
but sometimes the
focus is broadened to
include all mankind.
38. What did the second Adam bring to
humanity and when did he do it?
40. 2 Corinthians 5:14.
"If one died for all, then were all dead."
In some very important sense Christ's death
affected all human beings. That includes Adam
and Eve, and it even includes Cain and Hitler.
In some way all who were to be dead received
life because of the atonement of Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:19.
God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto
himself, not imputing their trespasses unto
them.
1 Timothy 4:10
God "is the Saviour of all men, specially of
those that believe."
God's work for mankind reaches deeper than
saving those who believe in Christ.
41. 1 John 2:2
"And He is the propitiation for our sins:
and not for ours only, but also for the sins
of the whole world."
John 3:16-17
For God so loved the world, that he gave
his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. For God sent not his Son
into the world to condemn the world; but
that the world through him might be saved.
Christ’s redeeming work includes not only
the sins of those who have repented and
believed in Christ, but He has done
something for all the sins that have ever
been committed.
42. (Romans 5:15-17)
15. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if
through the offence of one many be dead, much more
the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one
man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift:
for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the
free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one;
much more they which receive abundance of grace and
of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one,
Jesus Christ.)
43. Romans 5:18,19
"Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to
condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came
upon all men unto justification of life.

44. "He restored the whole race of
men to favor with God." (1 Selected
Messages 343)
"The fallen race uplifted from the
pit of ruin into which sin had
plunged them, and brought again
into connection with the infinite
God." (Signs of the Time 745)
"Though earth was struck off from
the continent of heaven and
alienated from its communion,
Jesus has connected it again with
the sphere of glory." (ST Nov. 24,
1887)
"Christ has thrown His divine arm
around the human race." (Review
and Herald June 11, 1889)
45. These statements all address the
situation of the human race as a
whole, just as the Biblical texts
did.
The whole race had been cut off
from heaven and separated from
God by the sin of Adam, but
Jesus restored the same human
race to favor with God.
All men are brought again into
connection with God. Clearly we
are not born separated from God,
as is claimed by those who
believe we are born lost and
condemned. Jesus by his death
has made a claim on all
humanity.
46. Because of Adam's sin, we suffer'
under many of the curses of sin, one
of which is inheriting a fallen nature,
but this fallen nature in and of it’s
self does not constitute separation,
condemnation, or guilt.
While these inspired statements do
not say that we are born in a
righteous or in a holy state, they do
say that we begin life connected in
some important way to God. At the
very least they mean that we do not
stand condemned from birth for the
sin of Adam or for our sinful
inheritance.
The corporate condemnation which
came through Adam’s sin, is
cancelled by corporate acquittal
through Christ’s righteous life.
47. Ephesians 1
3.Blessed be the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
hath blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places in
Christ:
4. According as he hath chosen
us in him before the foundation
of the world, that we should be
holy and without blame before
him in love:
5. Having predestinated us unto
the adoption of children by
Jesus Christ to himself,
according to the good pleasure
of his will,
48. How and when did this
acquittal entered the
picture for humanity?
In Genesis 2:17, God told
Adam and Eve that if they
ate of the forbidden tree
they would die in that day.
What prevented their
immediate death and the
annihilation of the human
race?
49. WHY DID ADAM NOT DIE THE VERY DAY HE SINNED?
"Why was not the death penalty at once enforced in his case? Because a
ransom was found. God's only begotten Son volunteered to take the sin
of man upon himself, and to make an atonement for the fallen race."
(RH, April 23, 1901 par. 9 ) {1BC 1082.6}
"The instant man accepted the temptations of Satan, and did the very
things God had said he should not do, Christ, the Son of God, stood
between the living and the dead, saying, 'Let the punishment fall on Me.
I will stand in man's place. He shall have another chance.'" (The Faith I
Live By Chap 3 First Promise of Redemption pg 75.3). {1BC 1085.2}
"As soon as there was sin, there was a Saviour.....As soon as Adam
sinned, the Son of God presented Himself as surety for the human race,
with just as much power to avert the doom pronounced upon the guilty
as when He died upon the cross of Calvary." (The Faith I Live By Chap
3 First Promise of Redemption pg 75.3) (1BC 1064).
52. The Sacrificial Offering
When Adam, according to
God's special directions, made
an offering for sin, it was to him
a most painful ceremony. His
hand must be raised to take life,
which God alone could give,
and make an offering for sin…..
This ceremonial offering,
ordained of God, was to be a
perpetual reminder to Adam of
his guilt, and also a penitential
acknowledgment of his sin.
{ The Story of Redemption
chap 5 pg 13 50.1}
53. This act of taking life gave Adam a
deeper and more perfect sense of his
transgression, which nothing less
than the death of God's dear Son
could expiate. He marveled at the
infinite goodness and matchless love
which would give such a ransom to
save the guilty. As Adam was slaying
the innocent victim, it seemed to him
that he was shedding the blood of
the Son of God by his own hand.
….in the sacrificial offerings,
pointing to the great and perfect
offering of God's dear Son, there
appeared a star of hope to illuminate
the dark and terrible future, and
relieve it of its utter hopelessness
and ruin.
{ The Story of Redemption chap 5
p.g 13 50.2}
54.
55. POINT 1
Did all men receive guilt and condemnation and the
sentence of death from Adam? Is that the legal
inheritance of all children? Absolutely. All the
statements (Texts & SOP quotation) quoted under "The
First Adam" are literally true. Adam can give us only
condemnation and death. He has no life or hope to offer
us. The question of the ages is, Were all men really freed
from that condemnation 'in Jesus Christ?
56. POINT 2
If it is true that we are all condemned through Adam, it
is far more importantly true that we are all freed from
that condemnation through Christ. If the first part is
true, then the glorious truth is the second part is just as
true.
57. POINT 3
Just as Adam condemned all men, Jesus freed all men
from condemnation. Both were without personal
involvement or choice, and both came at the same
instant of time. Adam and all human beings were given
a second chance to make up their own minds about the
gift of personal salvation.
58. Adam sinned, and the children of Adam share his
guilt and its consequences; but Jesus bore the guilt
of Adam, and all the children of Adam that will flee
to Christ, the second Adam, may escape the penalty
of transgression.
{Sign of the Time, May 19, 1890 par. 8}
59. Jesus removed the guilt and
condemnation of Adam’s sin
from all mankind (The penalty
for sin), but not the
consequences which naturally
follow, such as a fallen nature,
suffering, pain and temporal
death.(The result of sin. Evil)
60. What does Psalms 51:5 & Romans 5:12-14 prove?
These scriptures does not teach that fallen nature, in and of it’s self
makes one a sinner; nor does it teach that guilt is ascribed in
ignorance. It does teach two things about fallen nature.
1) Fallen nature is inherited by all children and its results are evident,
at the early stages of life; it makes us easily susceptible to
committing acts of sin,
2) Temporal death and physical maladies are a consequence of
Adam’s sin, but not evidence that guilt exist in the one who suffers
and dies.
61. How could one
come to the
belief that we
are sinners from
our conception
or birth?
