2. International Space Station
Space research laboratory
Runs experiments in biology, human
biology, physics, astronomy, weather
15 years old &
continuously
occupied for
13 years
About the size
of a football
field
(endzones
included)
5. Space Shuttle
5 space shuttles: Columbia, Challenger,
Discovery, Atlantis, & Endeavour
Launched satellites & probes
Helped
construct &
service the ISS
Total of 135
missions from
1981-2011
11. Your challenge
Design and outfit an
astroTATER with a
SPUDsuit that will
protect him/her
from small
meteoroids
traveling at high
speeds.
12. Materials for SPUDsuit
Rubber bands String
Plastic grocery bags Tissue paper
Aluminum foil Netting
Cellophane Paper towels
Newspaper Wax paper
Felt Foam paper
Ziplock bags Cotton balls
13. Design Constraints
Must fit snugly on yourTATERnaut
Must be lightweight & flexible
No adhesives (including glue or any tape)
Maximum of 4 layers
Must use at least 3 different materials
14. Testing
A screwdriver will be held above the
potato and dropped 3 times so the point
collides with the astroTATER each time.
A potato with no nicks or scratches
indicates success.
15. Video Submission
Prepare a video using a camera, a
Smartphone, or a tablet
NO LONGERTHAN 60 seconds
Video must show:
1) your design process, including
failed designs (important!)
2) your successful design surviving
3 drops of the screwdriver
16. ALL can participate!
You may work alone or in small
groups
Deadline for video submissions:
May 1st
Ask your science teacher for
details & a handout to take home!
