Argumentative Essay On Food Stamps
Food Stamp of Approval Everyone is guilty of judging another person at some point in his or her life whether they realize it or not. For instance, if
you see a child screaming uncontrollably in Wal–Mart, you might think his parents didn't raise him in a "correct" way. Society makes it so easy to
criticize others between all the tabloids and articles on social media. While criticizing others may be easy, we all know it is wrong. While the problem
remains in our judgement of the people around us, the solution centers around tolerance and equality. Because I am a cashier at Town & Country, I see
many different people come into the familiar regularly. It is my job to treat customers with utmost respect while they are shopping there. However, I
sometimes tend to silently disprove of some people due to their payment methods. Most states offer food stamps to people who need some financial
assistance. Food stamps allow people to buy strictly food items without using their own money. The initial purpose of food stamps is simply to provide
help for those families who qualify for the program. Although food stamps are meant to assist those in need, some individuals tend to abuse the system.
That infuriates the taxpayers in the United States. Taxpayers get frustrated when individuals on food stamps come in and buy very expensive or
unhealthy groceries. The taxpayers then think their money is being used to support an individual's unhealthy eating habits.

The Importance Of Food Stamp Challenges
Did you know that 17% of Americans in rural areas live below the poverty line, and out of those 17%, 15 million of those individuals are children?
(Hunger In America 2014). The month of September was Hunger Action month and many individuals helped raise awareness by taking the Food
Stamp (SNAP) Challenge. This challenge consists of an individual living on the SNAP balance of a $6–7 per day budget for food. Many individuals
came to the realization that this is a difficult budget, and does not meet the nutritional needs for a family. Personally, I could not take the challenge.
However, I did set up a budget plan for what I could spend on food for a week. To begin with, personally, I like to shop at Aldi. A lot of the foods are
knock–off brand, and are a few dollars cheaper. For breakfast, I could purchase a box of cereal for $1.69–2. For lunch, I could purchase a can of soup
or noodles for $1. Then for dinner, I could fry a pack of chicken for $2.29 (Aldi vs. Walmart). With tax added, I could possibly have... Show more

I asked my friends whether or not they would be able to take the SNAP challenge, and also what are their thoughts on this problem of people living on
such a small budget. On Twitter, the poll was 50/50. Voters voted that some could live on the $6
–7 dollars, and then the others said they could not
(Anna Kate Campbell 2017). Then on Facebook, 7 out of 9 friends stated that the SNAP challenge can be done. Some of the individuals even stated
that they are/or have lived on this budget before. However, two friends brought up the fact that individuals taking the challenge or who live on this
budget have to grocery shop intellectually. Many individuals can buy junk food which does not nutritionally feed a family. The other friend also
brought up the topic and fear that many individuals can misuse the welfare system (Anna Kate Campbell

Food Stamps Pros And Cons
Is it fair for the people in poverty and on food stamps to receive more than a hard working citizen? The government gave enough benefits to the
people in the food stamp program so that everyone on food stamps received 60,000 dollars, while the average income for a hard working American is
50,000 dollars. The definition of food stamps is a voucher issued by the government to those on low income and is exchangeable for food. The
government spends over seventy–six billion dollars per year on food stamps. This covers about forty–eight million people in America. The food stamp
program is lacking to provide stability for the poverty stricken people of America.
The first ever food stamp program was established during the Great Depression. At this time, prices were down on everything, including ... Show more

They must meet both a monthly gross income test and a monthly net income test. The gross income is the amount of a households income, with no
deductions. The net income is the gross income subtracted by the deductions. Deductions include a twenty percent earned income deduction, a
deduction for dependent care costs, which includes education, a deduction for child support, a deduction for elderly and disabled people, and an excess
shelter cost deduction. If the deduction is less than the average, the household has passed the income net test ("Supplemental").
Requirements in some states are different from other states. For example, the asset requirements have different rules. Assets are anything that is owned
by the household, excluding the land that they own. Households can obtain 2,250 dollars in the resources that they have ("Supplemental"). However,
like all the requirements there are more loop holes. Vehicles can either be accounted for or not, and if they are accounted for they have a 5,000 dollar

Walmart's Argumentative Essay On Food Stamps
In last week's activity, we had to put ourselves in the shoes of a parent with a nine year old child, who relies on food stamps in order to eat every week.
We had forty two dollars to spend on groceries from the food stamps and had to make it last a week. Our strategy consisted of picking the cheapest
types of food we could find that had a lot of servings, while also making sure the nutrition was somewhat sufficient to keep us healthy. We used
Walmart to shop for groceries since it had the cheapest prices compared to local grocery stores like Publix. Planning out the meals, we realized that
living on only forty two dollars a week for food really limited the variety of our diet. We realized that having a child to support with this low variety...

When more and more food stamps are being issued, the economy just looks weaker and weaker, as there must be less and less jobs around at the
time. Also, while not always true, some people that rely on food stamps might not be motivated to work a lot since they are being fed for free, and
simply to not need work. This creates an unhealthy dependence on the government, which may destroy motivation to work since these people can
freeload of the government for food, hurting the economy. The system should help those in poverty get up on their feet instead of babying them
for their entire life. Another problem with food stamps is that they are a little too generous for the people who are capable of work. During the
activity, we learned that getting enough food to get us by was not very difficult. While a large variety of foods wasn't available, the amount of food
we could purchase was more than enough for a welfare system. This just makes it easier for dependence, since there's not a ton of motivation due to
all of the free meals. This a problem because the taxpayers have to continue to pay for people who aren't motivated to get out of

Recommendation: White House budget proposal for the U.S. Department of Agriculture–Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The
administration wants to slash the program by 30 percent, which is about 2 percent of the Federal Budget. Under the proposal SNAP recipients would
lose much of their ability to choose the food they buy with their SNAP benefits because in lieu of that they will receive a monthly box of food. The
proposed plan would be in enacted in 2019. It would require approval from Congress before any significant changes are made.
Overview of the SNAP program in the U.S.
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture oversees the program, but the Food and Nutrition Service runs the actual SNAP program. The program was
implemented with the sole purpose of giving nutrition assistance to millions of Americans that are eligible. It provides families and low–income
individuals with a voucher to buy food in turn provides economic benefits in the local communities. So, it's a win win situation all the way you look at
it. The program is the largest of its kind and provides a hunger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After ten long years the country was in an economic meltdown as millions had lost their jobs, poverty and starvation decimated the country. The
food stamp program operated "by permitting people on relief to buy orange stamps equal to their normal food expenditures; for every $1 worth of
orange stamps purchased, 50 cents worth of blue stamps were received". (USDA, 2018). After four years of the program it had reached approximately
20 million people at a total cost of $262 million.

Food Stamps: A Form Of Social Welfare
Food stamps also known as the current SNAP program or Supplemental nutrition assistance program is a form of social welfare. Individuals can
obtain this type of service if they fall below the poverty line or have a dependent. SNAP can be used at grocery stores to purchase food items for their
family. Most recently the U.S. department of Agriculture it attempting to change the SNAP program by allowing families to purchase foods online.
"The USDA is attempting to recruit retail volunteers to join up for a two–year, nationwide pilot program that would allow low–income consumers to

Food Stamp Challenge For Hunger

Introduction to Hunger Imagine your stomach growling, a feeling of emptiness, fatigue, and an inability to concentrate. Most people would associate
these feelings with hunger and eat. Unfortunately, many Americans do not have the luxury of eating because of living inpoverty. According to the
Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of people living in poverty rose from 31.6 million in 2000 to 36.5 million in
2006. The number of people living in households facing food insecurity rose from 31 million in 1999 to 35.5 million in 2006. More than 12 million of
the people living in food insecure households were children (Labue, 2009). Food America (2017) reports:

Children in need of these nutrients can suffer from stunted growth never reaching potential height. Statistics have shown stunted growth children score

Food Stamps Pros And Cons
Food stamps are a widely debated issue within the United States, and every year new proposed laws create arguments that can get bitter, personal, and
ugly. Some see them as "free tickets" for the lazy and unemployed, while others believe they are the government's way of providing the right to life
that the country was founded on. As evidence shows, SNAP benefits are important to impoverished areas because they bring food to places were
companies would normally not go to and give benefits to people who cannot help their situation.
The main reason why low–income areas are full of malnutrition and hungry people is because food companies have no reason to sell food there. As
Erika Nicole Kendall, a former user of food stamps herself, states in her post on A Black Girl's Guide to Weight Loss, "The reason that food deserts
exist is because it is assumed that the people in those geographic locations cannot afford the products that a fresh food–selling store would provide".
However, food stamps and other programs can give companies incentives to sell food in these "food deserts" if the government subsidizes them.
Through these programs, the government uses economic strategies to help the poor get the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the usual image of a lazy and unproductive food stamp recipient is not very accurate, since unemployed middle–aged people rarely get these

benefits go to the people who truly cannot help their own situation, cannot hold a job for legal or physical reasons, and who should not be worried
about when they could run out of food. The help these kids get translates to a brighter future, more reasons to work harder and be independent, and a

Persuasive Essay On Food Stamps
Billions, that's how much money is being spent every year for food stamps alone. Billions could be spent on college or getting people out of
abusive relationships or saving us from the crippling debt that we as Americans are facing. Rather , we are buying unhealthy people pop , candy,
and cigarettes. Food stamp regulations should be stricter in order to prevent abuse of the system, decrease the obesity rate, and encourage people
to obtain legal employment so that they no longer need food stamps ,despite the claim that some people "need" food stamps. Some people are
raising three babies ,trying to be full time students ,and work a full time job.Others are sixty eight and can't work. I understand that some people
do need the assistance , but where do we draw the line? What kind of food are these people buying? Celery and chicken breasts or soda and freezer
meals? " If people are eligible , it's the government's fault", states Adam Sylvain. The Five Reasons or Food Stamps says "Children are the biggest
food stamps benefactor". So much of what people think is going on, isn't or they just don't see the real issues. Let's get this whole conversation
started with the overlapping of programs. Based off of the information found on the USDA ( US Department of Agriculture) ,people who receive
food stamps make an average of six hundred and forty nine dollars a month for a household of two adults a d two children. On top of that, some of
the families are also eligible for a program called WIC (Women with Infant Children), this program gives approximately five hundred dollars a
month. If a family qualified for both that accumulates to a total of one thousand one hundred and forty nine dollars. If you can not feed a family off
of that amount of income, then you must be buying lobster and scallops . On top of that there are other programs to provide financial assistance. As
well as many towns having local food pantries that give out food for free. The money that people are getting without earning could be going into
many other places. Other forms of abuse of the system include parents receiving money for children that no longer live with them, my mother is a
perfect example of this. The New York Times has an article

Food Stamps Essay
Food stamps are an important component of low–income families' monthly resources, increasing the chances that families are able to meet basic needs
(Ratcliffe, McKernan & Finegold, 2008). This form of food relief dates back to the Great Depression when many Americans lost their jobs and did
not have money to feed their families. People were starving while farmers produced abundant crop that could not be sold due to a lack of consumers
with buying power (Dorsch, 2013). The Federal Surplus Relief Corporation which was a part of the Agricultural Adjustment Act, bought basic farm
goods at low prices and distributed the among hunger relief agencies in different states and local communities (Congressional Digest, 2013).

This was a good idea because that meant that people seeking help received the assistance in the application process. There are many people needing
help who were not able to apply because there was a language barrier, and they ended up taking friends, family members or acquaintances with them in
order to help them fully understand what is required for acceptance into the program. This was a great addition to the Food Stamp Act because it
helped to better serve those in need. In 1993, the year where Second Harvest's data was collected, it was reported that 62.9% of impoverished adults
were women, and 60%.9 of adult emergency food users were women. 40% of all poor people and 42.9% of emergency food clients were children.
The Second Harvest study asked respondent agencies to list the top three reasons that clients in their programs seek food assistance. Recent
unemployment was the reason cited more often than any other. The second one was "working/need more money and the third was "emergency/crisis"
and term that could have meant eviction or sudden death from the breadwinner or natural disasters like hurricanes (Poppendieck, 1998). The results

Food Stamp Program Pros And Cons
In 1965, United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Stamp Program (FSP) began its organization to help low–income families pay for
food (Super). Yet, this program does not provide the proper food choices in order for these families to get the necessary nutrients one needs. Many
people do not realize the negative affects food stamps have when it comes to people's health. Not experiencing something first hand makes it difficult
for government officials to understand the everyday struggle of low–income families regards to buying groceries. Supporting oneself off minimum
wage is hard enough but having to support a family off nine dollars an hour is nearly impossible. Millions of Americans struggle with money every
day so they have to lean on government support to get by.
Important aspects of the Food Stamp Program, or otherwise known as Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the amount of money

Food Stamps: An Important Government Transfer Program Essay
Food Stamps: An Important Government Transfer Program
Food Stamps are an important subsidy for poor families in the United States. The program began (in its most basic form) in the 1930s in response to
the Great Depression and has seen many transformations since. Its original goal was to redistribute agricultural surpluses to needy individuals. It
gained popularity in the early 1940s and in 1961, Congress launched a pilot program. The program became permanent under President Johnson's Food
Stamp Act of 1964. At this time there were 1.4 million participants. By 1977 all states were required to provide Food Stamps to their underprivileged
residents (Senauer). This plan eventually led to the arrangement in place today.

Their net monthly income must fall below 100% of the federal poverty line. As of 2001, this amount equaled $1,421 for a family of four. These
guidelines were established in 1964 and are updated annually based on the Consumer Price Index. They are adjusted for inflation (Senauer). The
household may have no more than $2,000 in countable assets. A family unit may have $3,000 in assets if at least one member is over age 60 or
disabled. Automobiles count as assets for any amount of their value over $4,650 (Super). People applying for Food Stamps in Pennsylvania must
reside in the county in which they are applying but there is no requirement stating how long one must live there. As some recipients are homeless, a
permanent home address is not necessary to obtain Food Stamps.
A household's net income is determined by subtracting taxes and several personal allowances. First, there is a standard deduction of 8.31% of the
federal poverty level for that family size. This currently amounts to $134. All households are entitled to at least this amount. Households with five or
more people are entitled to a higher deduction, but no more than that of a family of six, which is $168. Elderly and disabled people may subtract
their medical expenses in excess of $35, provided that those expenses are not covered by any other welfare program.
Individuals who are employed may deduct up to 20% of their earned income. There is a maximum $200 per child

How Do Food Stamps Reduce Poverty?
Poverty is an issue that can affect anyone. One of the biggest struggles for those living in povery is obtaining and affording food. Thankfully the
United States has a food assistance program for people who are living in poverty. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formally known as
Food Stamps is a monthly budget specifically for food. While it has not eliminated hunger in the United States, it is a step forward and is also a
prevention to hunger in poverty stricken families.
Overview of the Policy
In 1939, President Roosevelt implemented the Food Stamps Plan, created by Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Wallace. (United States Department of
Agriculture , 2013) This plan allowed low income individuals to purchase orange stamp booklets to buy food and household items. To avoid spending
money for food on non–food related purchases, participants were required to buy the food stamp booklets. For every $1 of orange stamps purchases,
participants were given $0.50 worth of blue stamps. Blue stamps were used for surplus foods in the grocery stores. In 1943, the program ended
because there was a decline in poverty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

pilot program. The original budget for this plan was $75 million in the first year and would increase to $200 million in the third year. The estimated
overall participation was 4 million, but the participation would quickly surpass that in 1970. By October 1974, there was an overall 15 million

Mornings without breakfast transition to nights without dinner, but the situation does not change for America's poor and needy. The face of food
insecurity is often invisible. Behind lowered blinds and shut doors, poverty establishes itself in many styles and we attempt to defeat it in numerous
ways. Food assistance programs are the primary tool the government uses to alleviate the hunger pangs and empty diets caused by nutrition insecurity.

While such images have some truth to them, they are widely unrepresentative of actual SNAP misuse. No doubt, there is still discrepancy in some
places, as in Georgia, where prosecutors busted a small country store at the center of forty–six hundred dollars worth of food stamp fraud (Severson,
2013). That is just one example of the fading but worrying trend of misuse. The government has put many efforts into effect, and these do seem to be
partially responsible for the decreasing trend [citation needed]. Arguably, the most important measure taken was the movement from paper food stamps
to electronic accounting, known as the Electronic Benefit Transfer, or EBT. Zekeri (2004), in his paper on college students using SNAP, states that
"Although the data presented here are limited, one conclusion seems clear: the goals of EBT reducing theft, fraud, and social stigma or embarrassment
in the food stamp program are being met." Just in the period 2002–2005 (EBT was implemented nationwide in September 2004), food stamp fraud was
reduced by over 50% from the 1999–2000 period, even as SNAP usage increased [citation needed (FNS)]. Overall, among the most vulnerable
members of society SNAP, the National School Lunch Program, and the School Breakfast program, have all been remarkably successful at their core
mission: reducing food insecurity among low–income schoolchildren [citation needed]. While fraud

Food Stamp Program Thesis
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as the Food Stamp program, was established as a safety net against hunger and
malnutrition for low–income Americans and their families. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance programs help millions of families, seniors, people with
disabilities, and low–wage working Americans afford access to enough food. Food stamps was first introduced to the American public as a pilot
program during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Mabel McFadden of Rochester, NY was the first food stamp recipient. She paid four dollars and
received six dollars' worth of stamps in return.
An orange stamp could buy any food, while a blue stamp was good for only what the Department of Agriculture deemed to be in surplus. That
program lasted through the early 1940s. Food stamps were revived in the 1960s as part of the war on poverty, but Americans still had to pay for their

1960s, yet in the United States today, 15.6 million households are estimated to be food insecure. 40 percent of those eligible for food stamps miss out
on benefits. Many do not know they are eligible, others find the process too difficult. Even those on food stamps benefits can run out before the end of
the month, creating tough choice about whether to buy food or pay bills. Charities and churches provide some help but cannot fill the growing need.

The Influence Of Restrictions On Food Choices Among Food...
Restrictions on food choices among food stamps recipients not only raise questions on infringements of individual autonomy and choice they also
tend to stigmatize the recipient holders and make them feel socially disapproved. Yes, they do use tax payers' money to buy their food but they have
the right to spend the money allotted to them the way they want. Moreover, as per USDA's report they use a portion of their own money to buy the food
so there is no guarantee that restricting them from buying a certain type of food will affect their food purchase (USDA, 2007). It is true that obesity is
more common among those who are socioeconomically deprived but buying steak, lobsters and junk food from taxpayers' money is not the only reason

A History of Food Stamps
The primary goal of food stamps is to increase food security and reduce national hunger in the United States. Each year, out of the one trillion dollars
that the United States Government has to spend on assistance and welfare, food stamps takes up about 70 billion dollars (The History of NAP). The
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or previously known as the "Food Stamp Program) started through the Agriculture Adjustment Act
(AAA) and since then has spread around its influence and authority and grown in size (Mary Clare Jalonick Associated). Throughout the past 80 years,
the Food Stamp Program has been modified and reformatted, and today it aids more than 44 million Americans (Rude, Emelyn). The Food Stamp ...

Johnson instated the Food Stamp Act which made the Food Stamp Program permanent. Congress saw this as an opportunity to "strengthen the
agricultural economy; to help achieve a fuller and more effective use of food abundances; to provide for improved levels of nutrition among
low–income households through a cooperative Federal–State program of food assistance to be operated through normal channels of trade (Puro,
Steven)." In order for this program to function Congress would distribute out paper food stamps each month through a welfare office to those
personnel or families who made the poverty line or below. Right after the Food Stamp Act of 1964 was adopted by Congress and the United States,
many legislators have debated funding, eligibility standards, accessibility, and accountability (Food Distribution). However, this program did lead to a
boost in the economy. Not only did low income families get the nutritional supplements that they needed, but it also caused food stamps to be cash
equivalent to actual money which let customers buy other grocery items that were not part of the food program which expanded options (Rude,

Food is something precious and is a need to all living beings. Food stamps are given by SNAP formerly called the Food Stamp Program, is the
nation's largest nutrition assistance program and a key automatic stabilizer of family well–being during economic downturns. It also provides important
nutritional support for low–wage working families, seniors, and people with disabilities living on fixed incomes. Food stamps are beneficial to low
income families because it provides food for those cannot afford it. Firstly, food stamps help improve academic performances of children who come
from low income households. As a result of not having these benefits, "kids test scores dropped at times of the month when nutrition benefits had run
out." (Rachel West, Laura Kiesel, Angela Rosa, Linda Tirado, & Nick Buffie). In addition, his shows that the food stamp benefits reduce hunger and

Food Stamp Program Essay
The Food Stamp Program, recently renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, has been helping serve the citizens of America since 1939.
This program focuses on providing food at a discounted price to those who qualify. The past has helped shaped and grow this government program,
however, it has also had to adjust and change due to new demands and the changing demographics of the population. SNAP has allowed Americans to
provide themselves and their families with nutritious meals at a discounted price. However, if the newly proposed restrictions are implemented there
would be fewer options available and limit the recipient's purchasing power.

Three main legislative pieces were introduced to help address the issues of where the money to fund the program would come from, how the program
would be administered and the complete process of certification. On July 1, 1994, the FSP program began operating nationwide. The longer the bill
was enacted the more problems came up that needed to be addressed. In 1977, both the republicans and democrats provided main targets that each party
wanted to be addressed. Thus, the new Food Stamp Act of 1977 revised the primary act in the following ways: established statutory income eligibility
guidelines at the poverty line, penalized households whose heads voluntarily quit jobs, eliminated the requirement that households must have cooking
facilities (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): A Short History of SNAP). With increasing enrollment, there became a need to
re–adjust, cut backs were issued throughout the program and the structuring of some elements of the bill had to change in order to cut cost. Over the
next few years, the program grew in the number of recipients and in its area of coverage. The FSP begin offering relief for disaster victims and
extending coverage of children and those with disabilities. "By August 2008, participation had reached an all–time (non–disaster) high of 29 million
people per month" (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): A Short History of

The debate over whether or not citizens on food stamps should be able to buy junk food using food stamps has been a popular, or unpopular,
discussion topic that remains through the test of time. Food stamps for some people are simply a means to an end for some, that fact is undeniable.
The food stamps program itself cost a substantial amount of money just to keep it running. Many people abuse the program to get what they want
instead of what they need, this is why buying junk food with food stamps is a cause of obesity. The buying of junk food through the food stamp
program is an unnecessary expense and should not be allowed. Proponents of food stamps recipients claim that since junk food is often cheaper
they often do not have a choice in what they buy. Contrary to popular belief the program cost nearly eighty million dollars per year just to run it.
Those funds come out of tax payer's money. On top of that over two million of that is spent on junk food alone. According to www.care2.com the

Do Food Stamps Cause Obesity
Today's society is infatuated with the thought of being fit and skinny. Although eating healthy and balanced sounds ideal for most Americans, this can
be more difficult than it seems. Because of the number of families living in poverty, eating a nutritious and balanced diet is a tremendous challenge.
Healthy foods generally cost more than cheaper, processed foods. Families attempting to make the most of their scarce amount of money will try to
stretch their dollar and purchase large quantities of food, disregarding the nutritional value. Many studies show the correlation between obesity and other
health issues, with a family's financial status. Although there are now several ways for today's society to be healthful, including new diet ... Show more

Otherwise known as Food Stamps, this program was aimed towards those battling food insecurity or hunger, and to assist them in purchasing food.
This program has in fact helped to alleviate these problems, but has resulted in another extreme: obesity. The article "Do Food Stamps Cause Obesity?
Evidence From Immigrant Experience" explains that "monthly vouchers of food stamps have been found to affect quantity and frequency of food
consumption, with periods of high consumption immediately following voucher receipt (Kaushal, 4). I find this to be unsurprising, as when food is
plentiful and readily available, splurging seems likely. Citizens that are qualified for this program are essentially provided a sum of money in
correlation to the number of family members in their home. The money provided is enough to counteract hunger, but not nearly enough to provide a
healthy diet by any means. The article also provides that "between 20 to 30 percent of food stamp recipients would spend less on food than their food
stamp benefit amount if they received cash instead of stamps." Because the food stamp is only exchangeable for food items, this can limit the families
spending power. When given their monthly allotment of food stamps, the family will stock up on the inexpensive, unhealthy food, because it lasts the
longest. When living under these circumstances, the individual doesn't have a choice to be particular with the items they

that is against adding more restrictions is the anti–hunger organizations. The anti–hunger organization feels as people are smart enough to choose the

These limitations force the recipients to make their food stamps last over the given month that they are disbursed; this usually leads them to buying
products in bulk. Families that usually worry about having enough food on a day to day basis are given the ability to purchase food products without
limitations, tend to focus on quantity over quality. Concentrating on quantity is the determinant food stamp recipients use in making meager choices
and over consume low–quality food. More often than not they buy more food that would not be considered healthy or beneficial towards their diet.
The increase in weight progressively occurs as the recipients continue to receive the food stamps. Gibson (2004 p. 372) also examined the long term
effect of food stamp participation on childhood obesity. In her study Gibson focused on the quantity, quality, and timing of food consumption's effects
on the food stamp program's young recipients. She examined the eating habits of children participating in the food stamp program as well as their
physical activity (Gibson 2006 p. 1081). She concluded that long–term participation is positively and suggestively associated with being overweight
among younger children who are under the poverty line. Opposing Views The article titled "Child Specific Food Insecurity and Overweight are Not

15.3% of residents receive benefits from the SNAP program.2 The purpose of SNAP is to providenutrition to low–income citizens, however SNAP

A report released from NYC HRA revealed that over 40% of SNAP cases have balances of less than $20 by the end of the second week each
month.11 Scholars who have researched obesity and the paradox of hunger confirmed a symptom of obesity is overeating when food is available. The
total annual medical costs of obesity in the United States in now an estimated $190 million.12A recent report estimated that by 2030 U.S. healthcare
spending will rise to 68 billion annually if obesity rates continue to increase.13
Obesity rates in the US are rising due to food insecurity. One in six people in the U.S. are food insecure, while two–thirds of adults and one–third
Americans are overweight or obese.14 Studies have found that wealthy districts have three times as many supermarkets compared to the poor.15
Kevin Conocannon of the USDA noted in an interview that people in poorer areas sometimes have narrower variety of food options.16 SNAP
recipients face barriers to achieving nutritious diets due to lack of availability in their neighborhood. Healthy food often comes with higher costs, so
most people with lower income result to eating foods with lower cost and higher calories. According to a 2009 report by the USDA, as many as 23.5
million Americans live more than one mile from a supermarket with limited access to a vehicle.17 Food Deserts are particularly prevalent in

The opportunities range from taxation of sugar–based drinks to educating people only healthy foods. A few of the options are the following examples.
At present, benefits are distributed once a month. One of the programs that are being discussed are the possibility of dividing up the SNAP benefit
payment to twice a month, As quoted by Bhargava (2004) and Shapiro (2005) "To break the food stamp cycle some researcher propose distributing
SNAP benefits more often than the monthly schedule" (as quoted by Richards, Sindelar, 2013). One hope for the indicated would be too encouraging
increased fruits and vegetables to be purchased to produce a healthier eating pattern during the entire month. Hence, the curbing of high–calorie foods
are thought to generate obesity. The option also comes with problems. Some participants have no genuine incentive to improve their eating practices,
and in–store purchases and personal influence remain (Richards, Sindelar, 2013). Some participants feel they need to be rewarded for buying healthy,
fresh foods with their snap benefits. An option that would provide an incentive for every purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables a reimbursement of
SNAP cash will be added to the benefit card. The benefit will be added on toward the end of the month. Giving people the opportunity to buy
additional groceries. Even with this option when the added benefits are placed on the SNAP the recipients can then proceed to purchase the

The first idea for a Food Stamp Program came from Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace and Administrator Milo Perkins. The program worked by
people buying $1 stamps towards their food and then receiving stamps in return worth 50 cents for every $1 bought. Similar to today the 50 cent
stamps could only be used to purchase certain foods that had been chosen by the Department as surplus to need. At the height of its use there were
some 4 million people using Food Stamps and over the first four years nearly 20 million people, this cost $262 million (USDA, 2014). The program
was brought to an end when there was no longer the food surpluses and unemployemnt that had been seen. During the next twenty years many similar

Essay On Food Stamp Bill
The Republican–controlled Wisconsin State Assembly passed a bill on Wednesday, May 13th to require food stamp recipients to use their food stamps
only for healthy foods. The bill now travels to the Republican–controlled State Senate, where its future is unknown. In the previous legislative session,
the State Senate refused to take up a similar bill. If the bill passes the State Senate, the state would need a waiver from the federal government to
proceed with the program change. Other states, such as Missouri and Kansas, tried to pass similar legislation but were not granted the waiver from the
federal government.

Representative Robert Brooks of Saukville, a supporter of the bill, adds that this bill wouldn't dramatically change what one would buy at the grocery

The Pros And Cons Of Food Stamps
Eighteen percent of America is currently on food stamps. Why is that so? Food stamps allow just about anyone to qualify. Most of those on food
stamps are able–bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) (Hoar). Why is it that so many people are on food stamps? Maybe because it is
lenient with its rules. Being on food stamps does not give someone a comfortable and easy lifestyle, but it is comfortable enough. It is no secret that
obesity is a growing epidemic in America. Food stamps are one of the major roots of the problem. Imagine getting to stay home and not have to go to
work. The government sends checks in the mail to spend on groceries, but it gets better. The government does not prohibit the purchase of junk food.

There are many people in the surrounding area of Leedey, Oklahoma that are on food stamps. Most of them do not have any plans to make a
change in their lives, and none of them seem to be struggling in regards to food. Many will say that it is not the government's job to control what
people eat. The average person in America eats or drinks something that can be considered "junk food" every day. Why should the people on food
stamps be limited on food when they are already limited to other expenditures? Seeing that it is everyone's right to eat what he or she wants, he or
she should be able to buy junk food if it is he or she's own money. Food stamps are primarily run on government money. At least those who are not on
food stamps who buy junk food can say that it is he or she's own money. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), food stamps, was
created to get rid of hunger in the United States (Hoar). According to Robert Paarlberg of Harvard University obesity is the problem in most
low–income households, not hunger (2). Jen Fifield, the founder of a food pantry in Quitman County, claims that "many public health and medical
officials. . . [are] saying that the program. . . [is] feeding into the country's unhealthy habits and worsening the obesity epidemic. (1)" This is
supported by many statistics. Arkansas state Representative Mary Bently states that one in three adults in Arkansas are obese, and she is afraid that
food stamps are "enabling" diabetes and obesity to rise (1). If junk food is continued to be accessed by those on food stamps, then it will be more
than adults being affected by obesity. The children of America will eventually be affected by the leniency of food

Argumentative Essay In 2014, almost seventy billion dollars was spent on the food stamp program. Some may say that's a significant amount of
money compared to how much the United States owes in debt. Therefore, there should be more restrictions on who qualifies to get food stamps,
and also on how long people can receive them. If people are unemployed, then they should have applied to at least three different jobs before being
able to apply for food stamps. If people do have a job, then of course they must be making below poverty level to qualify. The only exceptions should

The only reason for why a person receiving food stamps cannot pass a drug test, is because the drug being used is for medical reasons only. If one
must take the drug test and not pass, then a warning shall be given, along with two extra drug tests given monthly. If the same person does not pass
the second time, food stamps should be cut by twenty percent; if they cannot pass the third test given, stamps should be cut by an additional thirty
percent. Finally, if the same person has failed four consecutive drug test, or four within three months, food stamps should be cut out completely with
a four month penalty before reapplying. The last restriction that should be applied to food stamps is how long you are able to continue receiving
them. A student would be to receive stamps as long as they are enrolled in school. A parent, or household with children, can receive food stamps for
the child until he/she has graduated, or turned eighteen if the child has dropped out of school. This prevents someone from dropping out of high

Argumentative Essay On Food Stamps

  • 1. Argumentative Essay On Food Stamps Food Stamp of Approval Everyone is guilty of judging another person at some point in his or her life whether they realize it or not. For instance, if you see a child screaming uncontrollably in Wal–Mart, you might think his parents didn't raise him in a "correct" way. Society makes it so easy to criticize others between all the tabloids and articles on social media. While criticizing others may be easy, we all know it is wrong. While the problem remains in our judgement of the people around us, the solution centers around tolerance and equality. Because I am a cashier at Town & Country, I see many different people come into the familiar regularly. It is my job to treat customers with utmost respect while they are shopping there. However, I sometimes tend to silently disprove of some people due to their payment methods. Most states offer food stamps to people who need some financial assistance. Food stamps allow people to buy strictly food items without using their own money. The initial purpose of food stamps is simply to provide help for those families who qualify for the program. Although food stamps are meant to assist those in need, some individuals tend to abuse the system. That infuriates the taxpayers in the United States. Taxpayers get frustrated when individuals on food stamps come in and buy very expensive or unhealthy groceries. The taxpayers then think their money is being used to support an individual's unhealthy eating habits. Society has twisted the meaning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Importance Of Food Stamp Challenges Did you know that 17% of Americans in rural areas live below the poverty line, and out of those 17%, 15 million of those individuals are children? (Hunger In America 2014). The month of September was Hunger Action month and many individuals helped raise awareness by taking the Food Stamp (SNAP) Challenge. This challenge consists of an individual living on the SNAP balance of a $6–7 per day budget for food. Many individuals came to the realization that this is a difficult budget, and does not meet the nutritional needs for a family. Personally, I could not take the challenge. However, I did set up a budget plan for what I could spend on food for a week. To begin with, personally, I like to shop at Aldi. A lot of the foods are knock–off brand, and are a few dollars cheaper. For breakfast, I could purchase a box of cereal for $1.69–2. For lunch, I could purchase a can of soup or noodles for $1. Then for dinner, I could fry a pack of chicken for $2.29 (Aldi vs. Walmart). With tax added, I could possibly have... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I asked my friends whether or not they would be able to take the SNAP challenge, and also what are their thoughts on this problem of people living on such a small budget. On Twitter, the poll was 50/50. Voters voted that some could live on the $6 –7 dollars, and then the others said they could not (Anna Kate Campbell 2017). Then on Facebook, 7 out of 9 friends stated that the SNAP challenge can be done. Some of the individuals even stated that they are/or have lived on this budget before. However, two friends brought up the fact that individuals taking the challenge or who live on this budget have to grocery shop intellectually. Many individuals can buy junk food which does not nutritionally feed a family. The other friend also brought up the topic and fear that many individuals can misuse the welfare system (Anna Kate Campbell ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Food Stamps Pros And Cons Is it fair for the people in poverty and on food stamps to receive more than a hard working citizen? The government gave enough benefits to the people in the food stamp program so that everyone on food stamps received 60,000 dollars, while the average income for a hard working American is 50,000 dollars. The definition of food stamps is a voucher issued by the government to those on low income and is exchangeable for food. The government spends over seventy–six billion dollars per year on food stamps. This covers about forty–eight million people in America. The food stamp program is lacking to provide stability for the poverty stricken people of America. The first ever food stamp program was established during the Great Depression. At this time, prices were down on everything, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They must meet both a monthly gross income test and a monthly net income test. The gross income is the amount of a households income, with no deductions. The net income is the gross income subtracted by the deductions. Deductions include a twenty percent earned income deduction, a deduction for dependent care costs, which includes education, a deduction for child support, a deduction for elderly and disabled people, and an excess shelter cost deduction. If the deduction is less than the average, the household has passed the income net test ("Supplemental"). Requirements in some states are different from other states. For example, the asset requirements have different rules. Assets are anything that is owned by the household, excluding the land that they own. Households can obtain 2,250 dollars in the resources that they have ("Supplemental"). However, like all the requirements there are more loop holes. Vehicles can either be accounted for or not, and if they are accounted for they have a 5,000 dollar value ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Walmart's Argumentative Essay On Food Stamps In last week's activity, we had to put ourselves in the shoes of a parent with a nine year old child, who relies on food stamps in order to eat every week. We had forty two dollars to spend on groceries from the food stamps and had to make it last a week. Our strategy consisted of picking the cheapest types of food we could find that had a lot of servings, while also making sure the nutrition was somewhat sufficient to keep us healthy. We used Walmart to shop for groceries since it had the cheapest prices compared to local grocery stores like Publix. Planning out the meals, we realized that living on only forty two dollars a week for food really limited the variety of our diet. We realized that having a child to support with this low variety... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When more and more food stamps are being issued, the economy just looks weaker and weaker, as there must be less and less jobs around at the time. Also, while not always true, some people that rely on food stamps might not be motivated to work a lot since they are being fed for free, and simply to not need work. This creates an unhealthy dependence on the government, which may destroy motivation to work since these people can freeload of the government for food, hurting the economy. The system should help those in poverty get up on their feet instead of babying them for their entire life. Another problem with food stamps is that they are a little too generous for the people who are capable of work. During the activity, we learned that getting enough food to get us by was not very difficult. While a large variety of foods wasn't available, the amount of food we could purchase was more than enough for a welfare system. This just makes it easier for dependence, since there's not a ton of motivation due to all of the free meals. This a problem because the taxpayers have to continue to pay for people who aren't motivated to get out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Food Stamp Program Research Paper Recommendation: White House budget proposal for the U.S. Department of Agriculture–Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The administration wants to slash the program by 30 percent, which is about 2 percent of the Federal Budget. Under the proposal SNAP recipients would lose much of their ability to choose the food they buy with their SNAP benefits because in lieu of that they will receive a monthly box of food. The proposed plan would be in enacted in 2019. It would require approval from Congress before any significant changes are made. Overview of the SNAP program in the U.S. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture oversees the program, but the Food and Nutrition Service runs the actual SNAP program. The program was implemented with the sole purpose of giving nutrition assistance to millions of Americans that are eligible. It provides families and low–income individuals with a voucher to buy food in turn provides economic benefits in the local communities. So, it's a win win situation all the way you look at it. Individuals can obtain this type of service if they fall below the poverty line or have a dependent. SNAP can be used at grocery stores to purchase food items for their family. Most recently the U.S. department of Agriculture it attempting to change the SNAP program by allowing families to purchase foods online. • 7. Food Stamp Challenge For Hunger Food Stamp Challenge Introduction to Hunger Imagine your stomach growling, a feeling of emptiness, fatigue, and an inability to concentrate. Most people would associate these feelings with hunger and eat. Unfortunately, many Americans do not have the luxury of eating because of living inpoverty. According to the Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of people living in poverty rose from 31.6 million in 2000 to 36.5 million in 2006. The number of people living in households facing food insecurity rose from 31 million in 1999 to 35.5 million in 2006. • 8. Food Stamps Pros And Cons Food stamps are a widely debated issue within the United States, and every year new proposed laws create arguments that can get bitter, personal, and ugly. Some see them as "free tickets" for the lazy and unemployed, while others believe they are the government's way of providing the right to life that the country was founded on. As evidence shows, SNAP benefits are important to impoverished areas because they bring food to places were companies would normally not go to and give benefits to people who cannot help their situation. The main reason why low–income areas are full of malnutrition and hungry people is because food companies have no reason to sell food there. As Erika Nicole Kendall, a former user of food stamps herself, states in her post on A Black Girl's Guide to Weight Loss, "The reason that food deserts exist is because it is assumed that the people in those geographic locations cannot afford the products that a fresh food–selling store would provide". However, food stamps and other programs can give companies incentives to sell food in these "food deserts" if the government subsidizes them. Through these programs, the government uses economic strategies to help the poor get the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These benefits go to the people who truly cannot help their own situation, cannot hold a job for legal or physical reasons, and who should not be worried about when they could run out of food. • 10. Persuasive Essay On Food Stamps Billions, that's how much money is being spent every year for food stamps alone. Billions could be spent on college or getting people out of abusive relationships or saving us from the crippling debt that we as Americans are facing. Rather , we are buying unhealthy people pop , candy, and cigarettes. Food stamp regulations should be stricter in order to prevent abuse of the system, decrease the obesity rate, and encourage people to obtain legal employment so that they no longer need food stamps ,despite the claim that some people "need" food stamps. Some people are raising three babies ,trying to be full time students ,and work a full time job.Others are sixty eight and can't work. I understand that some people do need the assistance , but where do we draw the line? What kind of food are these people buying? Celery and chicken breasts or soda and freezer meals? " If people are eligible , it's the government's fault", states Adam Sylvain. The Five Reasons or Food Stamps says "Children are the biggest food stamps benefactor". So much of what people think is going on, isn't or they just don't see the real issues. Let's get this whole conversation started with the overlapping of programs. Based off of the information found on the USDA ( US Department of Agriculture) ,people who receive food stamps make an average of six hundred and forty nine dollars a month for a household of two adults a d two children. On top of that, some of the families are also eligible for a program called WIC (Women with Infant Children), this program gives approximately five hundred dollars a month. If a family qualified for both that accumulates to a total of one thousand one hundred and forty nine dollars. If you can not feed a family off of that amount of income, then you must be buying lobster and scallops . On top of that there are other programs to provide financial assistance. As well as many towns having local food pantries that give out food for free. The money that people are getting without earning could be going into many other places. Other forms of abuse of the system include parents receiving money for children that no longer live with them, my mother is a perfect example of this. The New York Times has an article ... • 11. Food Stamps Essay Food stamps are an important component of low–income families' monthly resources, increasing the chances that families are able to meet basic needs (Ratcliffe, McKernan & Finegold, 2008). This form of food relief dates back to the Great Depression when many Americans lost their jobs and did not have money to feed their families. People were starving while farmers produced abundant crop that could not be sold due to a lack of consumers with buying power (Dorsch, 2013). The Federal Surplus Relief Corporation which was a part of the Agricultural Adjustment Act, bought basic farm goods at low prices and distributed the among hunger relief agencies in different states and local communities (Congressional Digest, 2013). The original Food Stamps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was a good idea because that meant that people seeking help received the assistance in the application process. There are many people needing help who were not able to apply because there was a language barrier, and they ended up taking friends, family members or acquaintances with them in order to help them fully understand what is required for acceptance into the program. This was a great addition to the Food Stamp Act because it helped to better serve those in need. In 1993, the year where Second Harvest's data was collected, it was reported that 62.9% of impoverished adults were women, and 60%.9 of adult emergency food users were women. 40% of all poor people and 42.9% of emergency food clients were children. The program began (in its most basic form) in the 1930s in response to the Great Depression and has seen many transformations since. Its original goal was to redistribute agricultural surpluses to needy individuals. It gained popularity in the early 1940s and in 1961, Congress launched a pilot program. The program became permanent under President Johnson's Food Stamp Act of 1964. At this time there were 1.4 million participants. Food Stamp Program Thesis The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as the Food Stamp program, was established as a safety net against hunger and malnutrition for low–income Americans and their families. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance programs help millions of families, seniors, people with disabilities, and low–wage working Americans afford access to enough food. One in six people in the U.S. are food insecure, while two–thirds of adults and one–third Americans are overweight or obese.14 Studies have found that wealthy districts have three times as many supermarkets compared to the poor.15 Kevin Conocannon of the USDA noted in an interview that people in poorer areas sometimes have narrower variety of food options.16 SNAP recipients face barriers to achieving nutritious diets due to lack of availability in their neighborhood. Healthy food often comes with higher costs, so most people with lower income result to eating foods with lower cost and higher calories. According to a 2009 report by the USDA, as many as 23.5 million Americans live more than one mile from a supermarket with limited access to a vehicle.17 Food Deserts are particularly prevalent in low–income communities.18 ... • 33. Food Stamp Program Benefits The food stamp program was instituted to ensure that people are no longer are going hungry in America. Since The Food Stamp Act came into effect in the year 1964. Obesity seems to be more prevalent in participants of this food program. Obesity does not discriminate, although it does appear to affect lower–income women that participate in the Food Stamp Program. As written by Gibson (2008) "Participation in the Food Stamp Program by low–income women was associated with a 9.0% increase in the probability of current obesity" (as cited by Zhu,Yen,Eastwood, 2005). More people are inclined to be more obese now than ever before; there are 30% or 6 million of adults that are categorized as obese in the United States (Collins, 2007). The rate is for ... At present, benefits are distributed once a month. One of the programs that are being discussed are the possibility of dividing up the SNAP benefit payment to twice a month, As quoted by Bhargava (2004) and Shapiro (2005) "To break the food stamp cycle some researcher propose distributing SNAP benefits more often than the monthly schedule" (as quoted by Richards, Sindelar, 2013). One hope for the indicated would be too encouraging increased fruits and vegetables to be purchased to produce a healthier eating pattern during the entire month. Hence, the curbing of high–calorie foods are thought to generate obesity. The option also comes with problems. Some participants have no genuine incentive to improve their eating practices, and in–store purchases and personal influence remain (Richards, Sindelar, 2013). Some participants feel they need to be rewarded for buying healthy, fresh foods with their snap benefits. An option that would provide an incentive for every purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables a reimbursement of SNAP cash will be added to the benefit card. The benefit will be added on toward the end of the month. Giving people the opportunity to buy additional groceries. Even with this option when the added benefits are placed on the SNAP the recipients can then proceed to purchase the sugar–based drinks of their choice. • 34. Food Stamp History The first idea for a Food Stamp Program came from Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace and Administrator Milo Perkins. The program worked by people buying $1 stamps towards their food and then receiving stamps in return worth 50 cents for every $1 bought. Similar to today the 50 cent stamps could only be used to purchase certain foods that had been chosen by the Department as surplus to need. At the height of its use there were some 4 million people using Food Stamps and over the first four years nearly 20 million people, this cost $262 million (USDA, 2014). The program was brought to an end when there was no longer the food surpluses and unemployemnt that had been seen. • 35. Healthy Food Stamps All across America there are people living with obesity because they can't afford to buy healthier foods. In a world of health conscious, and green people healthy foods have become a luxury not necessarily a necessity. For the people who are beneficial enough to buy healthy foods, it might seem like a necessity. The green people who buy organic products which cost even more don't see an issue with the cost, however, there's people all across the USA who would like to eat healthier but they can't because they can't afford it. For impoverished people onfood stamps who live in lower class neighborhoods, they don't have access to a lot of grocery store chains. For the same price you paid for the taco's or salad, you could've bought something with more substance that would have made you feel full until your next meal. When you're hungry again you probably think that it's too soon to eat a meal again so you munch on some snacks. If you're busy doing something else you probably wouldn't realize just how much you're actually eating and before you knew it an entire bag of chips are gone, you're still hungry and it's still not the time for your next meal. The goal for impoverished families is quantity, not quality. The goal is to have enough food for everyone in the house. When they choose quality it's usually for their ... • 36. Essay On Food Stamp Bill The Republican–controlled Wisconsin State Assembly passed a bill on Wednesday, May 13th to require food stamp recipients to use their food stamps only for healthy foods. The bill now travels to the Republican–controlled State Senate, where its future is unknown. In the previous legislative session, the State Senate refused to take up a similar bill. If the bill passes the State Senate, the state would need a waiver from the federal government to proceed with the program change. Other states, such as Missouri and Kansas, tried to pass similar legislation but were not granted the waiver from the federal government. Abby Phillip, author of "Wisconsin Wants to Discourage the Poor from SpendingFood Stamps on Junk Food," explains the bill and its possible impacts. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, a supporter of the bill, states that "there is a direct financial benefit not just to the individual, which of course is obvious to have better health, but also to state taxpayers and society as a whole." Representative Robert Brooks of Saukville, a supporter of the bill, adds that this bill wouldn't dramatically change what one would buy at the grocery store. • 37. The Pros And Cons Of Food Stamps Eighteen percent of America is currently on food stamps. Why is that so? Food stamps allow just about anyone to qualify. Most of those on food stamps are able–bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) (Hoar). Why is it that so many people are on food stamps? Maybe because it is lenient with its rules. Being on food stamps does not give someone a comfortable and easy lifestyle, but it is comfortable enough. It is no secret that obesity is a growing epidemic in America. Food stamps are one of the major roots of the problem. Imagine getting to stay home and not have to go to work. The government sends checks in the mail to spend on groceries, but it gets better. The government does not prohibit the purchase of junk food. Those people can now indulge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Less than one percent of America has what is considered a "very low food security," yet eighteen percent of America is on food stamps (Hoar). There are many people in the surrounding area of Leedey, Oklahoma that are on food stamps. Most of them do not have any plans to make a change in their lives, and none of them seem to be struggling in regards to food. Many will say that it is not the government's job to control what people eat. The average person in America eats or drinks something that can be considered "junk food" every day. Why should the people on food stamps be limited on food when they are already limited to other expenditures? Seeing that it is everyone's right to eat what he or she wants, he or she should be able to buy junk food if it is he or she's own money. Food stamps are primarily run on government money. At least those who are not on food stamps who buy junk food can say that it is he or she's own money. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), food stamps, was created to get rid of hunger in the United States (Hoar). According to Robert Paarlberg of Harvard University obesity is the problem in most low–income households, not hunger (2). Jen Fifield, the founder of a food pantry in Quitman County, claims that "many public health and medical officials. . . [are] saying that the program. . . [is] feeding into the country's unhealthy habits and worsening the obesity epidemic. (1)" This is supported by many statistics. Arkansas state Representative Mary Bently states that one in three adults in Arkansas are obese, and she is afraid that food stamps are "enabling" diabetes and obesity to rise (1). If junk food is continued to be accessed by those on food stamps, then it will be more than adults being affected by obesity. The children of America will eventually be affected by the leniency of food ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Food Stamp Research Paper We the United States Department of Agriculture have seen that the so called Food Stamps program, also known as SNAP is being abused by irresponsible adults that use the money provided by the government to buy junk food. Not only are the people of the United States buying none–nutritional food, but they are being misinformed on how to use this government help properly. We as the leaders of theUnited States must put a stop to this growing problem that is filling the American homes of this nation. We, as part of the governing body of this nation should regulate the kind of food that each individual is buying, through the Food Stamp program. • 39. Food Stamps Argumentative Essay Argumentative Essay In 2014, almost seventy billion dollars was spent on the food stamp program. Some may say that's a significant amount of money compared to how much the United States owes in debt. Therefore, there should be more restrictions on who qualifies to get food stamps, and also on how long people can receive them. If people are unemployed, then they should have applied to at least three different jobs before being able to apply for food stamps. If people do have a job, then of course they must be making below poverty level to qualify. The only exceptions should be made to full time high school, community college, or university students, or have been in the last six months. Students should have applied to at least one job before... If one must take the drug test and not pass, then a warning shall be given, along with two extra drug tests given monthly. If the same person does not pass the second time, food stamps should be cut by twenty percent; if they cannot pass the third test given, stamps should be cut by an additional thirty percent. Finally, if the same person has failed four consecutive drug test, or four within three months, food stamps should be cut out completely with a four month penalty before reapplying. The last restriction that should be applied to food stamps is how long you are able to continue receiving them. A student would be to receive stamps as long as they are enrolled in school.
