As a part of the "virtual village" project volunteer, our aim was to research about our community
regarding necessities of older adults, their accessibility to healthcare, and overall what resources are
available for them that make their life easy to live. Our group decided to focus on Edgewater

The Importance Of A Virtual Community
In today's world, peoples' communication has changed drastically comparing to the last centuries.
The development of technologies and media have allowed us to build our own network and
acquaintances, as well as to find people who share the same interests as you, creating "virtual
communities". As told by Brym and Lie, virtual communities are "the associations of people
scattered across the world, who communicate via computer and about a subject of common interest"
(2018: 64). In this essay, I will demonstrate the example of me being involved in a virtual

helping some to find companionship, social interactions, and discovering one 's personal identity.

communities", Rheingold defined the virtual communities as a group of social aggregates which

Do you have Facebook, or another social media account? Turns out, over 1.86 billion people also
have Facebook. New media usage in our society has been increasing at a significant rate. Ever since
the rise of new media, there has also been a rise of technology critiques. These critiques find all the
negative outcomes of new media; there has been a decline of face–to–face communication, people
are becoming lethargic. Though there may be various reasons why the rise of new media is harmful,
there is also one very important reason why it is beneficial; new media provides a platform for the
voices of the underrepresented to be heard.
In this paper, I will be discussing how new media enabled progress and social change by enabling
the LGBT community and other underrepresented communities to have a voice.
Various sources have reported that social media has given the LGBT community a voice by bringing
together supporters regardless of distance and easily spreading awareness to places that may not be
informed about the LGBT community. An article released by Salzburg Academy on Media & Global
Change called Social Media and the LGBT community discusses exactly that. They write,
"Individuals and groups have used social media to gather, physically and virtually, to promote and

Nowadays, people connect each other by social media. Facebook, a virtual community, is one of the
most popular social websites. Most of the other websites allow users to create an account in an

Social media is one of the key tools of communication and socialization. It allows teens and children

it, when I wake up the first thing I do is reach for my smartphone. I immediately check on people; I

Written in the book Mind Change, "Compared with other social networks, Facebook users are the
most engaged: 52 percent visit Facebook daily, with other popular sites such as Twitter (33 percent),
Myspace (7 percent) and LinkedIn (6 percent) trailing behind." (Greenfield, 97) Basically what this
is saying, is that the younger generations are very comfortable with social media, because they have
grown up with this since birth and it 's what they know! Older folks, like my parents and older
generations are not as comfortable with this technology age. They have seen many advances, but
have found themselves avoiding its use because it can be overwhelming! However, anyone of any
age can become addicted to using social media, take for example texting and driving. It is a big
social concern as many people are driving distracted while texting and lives are being destroyed in a
matter of minutes because of this so called texting addiction. In fact, there are many influences both
negative and positive affecting our communities when it comes to social media.
