Kurt Cobain Research Paper
I d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not. Kurt Cobain was legendary in music
and he meant what he said. He never changed himself and that was seen throughout his life. His
resistance to change made him the influential person he was and created the spokesman for so many
young people that resented the culture of the day. Kurt was a fiery, impulsive, and rebellious person in
his childhood, in his musical success, and in his explosive, memorable end.
Everyone has a beginning, and for Kurt, his beginning was full of pain and started him on the path that
led to his demise. Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Hoquiam, Washington to Donald
Cobain and Wendy Cobain (McDougall 16). Kurt was a joyful kid, and he was a fantastic artist. His
art teacher at Aberdeen High School ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Around this time Kurt started taking drugs and alcohol, a choice that would eventually ruin his life,
but he also met a local band The Melvins (McDougall 29). The leader of this group Buzz Osborne
took Kurt to a punk rock concert, which changed the way Kurt saw music and influenced most of his
later works. After high school, Kurt began living on the streets as an outcast and sometimes sleeping
under bridges or on benches. He started taking any drugs that were available to him and his life
seemed like it was going nowhere (McDougall 34). However, no one could have predicted that his
musical talents would change music as we know it and he would become one of the most influential
artists ever. With Kurt s life seemingly becoming worthless, he began to pursue music and that led to
his most memorable success, Nirvana. Prior to Nirvana Kurt had very little to no musical success, his
first band, Fecal Matter, was started in 1986 and was really nothing more than a small, insignificant
Seattle garage band (McDougall 34). Fecal Matter quickly

Case Study Of Toyota Prius
1. What are the problems in this case? The problem in this case is weather are not it is the correct
decision to accelerate the launch of the Toyota Prius a car built with the new hybrid technology. The
TMC (Toyota Motor Company) identified an untapped market in the US in the 1970 s when they saw
there was a demand for a small fuel efficient car due to the raising gas prices. This was a market the
Big Three were not equipped to meet. Toyota and other Japanese car manufactures were able to take
advantage of this market need and obtain top positions in this market. They were able to survive and
succeed in this market by offering more reliable cars than the Big Three and operating efficient plants
to control costs. By the 90 s there was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The product that Toyota was introducing to the consumer was not ground breaking and did not set
itself apart from any other product on the market, not only did it not set itself apart it was producing
vehicles that closely resembled the competition. Toyota was losing their competitive edge of reliability
because other companies were able to replicate their efficient production and reliability and have the
same success they Toyota previously held. The customer base for Toyota was not growing and more of
a following due to loyalty to their past performance. The company had also lost its innovative edge
and with this was losing its market share. I see due to Toyota s lack of initiative by not moving more
manufacturing to the US and innovation as an opportunity to enter the small car market that was
previously dominated by the Japanese manufactures. With all this said Toyota still had a great
reputation for producing a very reliable product, with this reputation Toyota could be one change away
from becoming a major player

Benefits Of Organ Replacement Using Cloning Technique
1. Counter argument: It has a great contribution to organ replacement. When scientists are dealing
with organ replacement using cloning technique, they no longer use Reproductive Cloning Technique
(RCT) but they use Therapeutic Cloning Technique (TCT). Both techniques require the same
laboratory procedures just that in RCT, they will insert the cloned embryos into the womb to grow
until birth and in TCT, they will kill the cloned embryos for the stem cell. This stem cell is what the
scientists get interested in because they could use this stem cell to generate and harvest new and
healthy organs that are entirely functioning. In the context of biology, the stem cell is very useful
because it just like the ultimate mother for every cell. It can differentiate into whatever cell when the
body needs. Therefore, when organ transplant is necessary for the patient, and there is no organ donor,
scientists could use the stem cell to produce the same organ for transplant and save life. Considering
the huge number of people on the organ donation waiting lists, this is extremely beneficial.
2. Supporting details: Embryonic stem cells act as an alternative source of cells because stem cell, can
differentiate into any desired tissues or cells. Combining tissue engineering and cloning technique,
replacement of organ by using the patient s own stem cell is possible at all stage.
3. Example: In the past few years, scientists and researchers have successfully cloned cardiac muscle
cell and

Three Certainty Requirement
This question require us to consider the three certainty requirements and the circumstances in which a
valid trust is said to be properly constituted. The general requirement to create a trust is that if the trust
is properly constituted, it bind the settlor and be enforceable by the beneficiaries. On the other hand, if
the trust is not completely constituted, it will be ineffective as the general rule requires. Equity will not
be able to help because of two of its maxims equity will not assist a volunteer and equity will not
perfect the imperfect gift . The court will be prevented from coming to the aid of a volunteer
beneficiary regardless of how undesirable the outcome might appear.
i. Is this a gift in favour of the sister or a trust in favour of his friends? If it is a trust, has the settlor
sufficiently shown intention to subject the property to a trust obligation? An express trust is created if
only the settlor can show that he intended to subject the property to a trust obligation. It is necessary
for the settlor to show that he intend to create a trust instead of some other type of legal relationship,
e.g. gift, a power or bailment.
As Megary .J. put it in Re Kayford Ltd, the question is whether in substance a sufficient intention to
create a trust has been manifested . However, a trust can be created ... Show more content on

exact meaning varies from person to person. Some will include only those with whom they had been

Intellectual Property on the Internet Essay
Intellectual Property on the Internet
On one of my first web sites I had an original graphic design, done by one of my friends. The design
was interesting and eye catching, two necessary elements for my site. I kept the design on the site for
over six months, before taking it down and rebuilding. Almost a year after the graphic went up on my
site, the person who designed it saw it on another site. After he showed me, he expressed his
disappointment. He had put his time and hard work into this and someone else had just copied the
image off my site and used it for themselves. The design was my friend s work and his intellectual
property.

These early laws were limited in scope and restricted to only a few types of information; the broader
interpretation of these principles used today in the western world is quite modern, certain elements

Although the concept has been around for a long time, protection of intellectual property has never
been as much of an issue as it is today. Eric Chabrow explains:
That s because pre Internet, intellectual property was fairly easy to protect. Books, illustrations, and
reports could all be held in your hands. Even computer software, though trickier to protect, usually
resides on disks that can be protected. But the Internet makes it a cinch for any PC owner to copy and
distribute that is, to publish virtually anything on the World Wide Web. This powerful technology
threatens to make copyright and other intellectual property protections obsolete. (Chabrow,
Copyrights: What s Left?)
The copying of text, sound, and graphics has become easy to do, but it is extremely hard to detect.
With the increased use of the Internet and software tools that ease the copying of information, text,
sound, and graphics can be used without the permission of the author or creator. To copy a word,

Michael Jordan Biography Essay
Michael Jordan is one of the best NBA players of all time. This is my biography about him.
Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. Michael Jordan went to
Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. This is where Michael started his long basketball
journey. But he didn t try to make the team until his sophomore year where he didn t even make the
varsity team. When he didn t make the team he was very embarrassed, which lead him to be
determined to make the very next year. So in the next summer Michael trained all summer long, where
he also grew from being 5 11 to being 6 3. All of this paid off as he made the team that year and took

North Carolina had a very good season with all three of their stars going 12 2. Which was good

How Did The Unification Of Italy Lead To Italian Unification
Before 1815, the Italian Peninsula had not been unified since the fall of the Roman Empire and
cultural divisions made it difficult for the Italian people to gain unity again.
Groups in several Italian states began to push the idea of a unified country but Italy went through
many obstacles attempting to unify and become what we know as Italy today.
Italy was divided into competing states which made it difficult for the people because they considered
themselves a part of their city, not as part of a bigger Italy. Secondly, The Congress of Vienna divided
Italy up among Austria, Hapsburg, and the French. Finally, Nationalist revolts were continually
crushed by Austria. The weak national feeling that the people of Italy were feeling was because they
found it difficult to identify with Italy as a country and still felt one with their individual cities. The
Tuscans of Florence, the Venetians of Venice, and the Neapolitans of Naples.

This conference was called the Congress of Vienna. Italy was divided up among Austrian rulers,
Hapsburg monarchs, and a French Bourbon king. The foreign countries had control over the Italian
states which brought a huge obstacle to the unification. Since Austria controlled most of the eight
states, the first obstacle was the fact that Austria used their influence to suppress the unification to
protect their own interest and keep Austria stable. France sent troops to Rome to protect the Pope
which hindered the unification of the country in the final stage. The Franco Prussian War broke out
and France called back the troops in Rome to fight and helped Italy to complete the unification.
Attempting to interfere with the unification of Italy, the clashes led to the rise of nationalism, which is

Prufrock
T.S. Eliot s poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock examines a single character, Prufrock, who has
been influenced by three very different modes of thinking: Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism.
These influences cause inner conflict within the character that he struggles to overcome throughout
the course of the poem. Eliot s Prufrock is both psychologically and socially crippled because he
embodies both Romantic and Realist ideals, i.e. the heroism of the individual and the awareness of
insurmountable, objective realities, respectively, while possessing the self conscious mind of a man
influenced by a culture of Modernism. Robert Cook, in his analysis, titled Emerson s Self Reliance,
Sweeney, and Prufrock, of Ralph Emerson s self reliant man, the epitome of a Romantic, and T.S.
Eliot s Prufrock, draws a number of distinctions between the two writers. He holds that Prufrock is
Eliot s more realistic response to Emerson s idealistic man. Ron Banerjee examines the epigraph of the
poem, which is a verse from Dante s Divine Comedy, and, among other things, discovers how it
illuminates the unchangeable reality of the world around Prufrock. Romanticism heralds the heroism
and nonconformity of the noble individual. The desire to be great and known is innate to all men,
including Prufrock; however, Prufrock s crippling self consciousness disables him from breaking
away from society as the true Romantic man would strive to do. It is evident by reading the poem that

Comparative Essay On The American And French Revolutions

1.) Why does the United States come out its revolution with a republic instead of a monarchy? Why
do the French wind up with an Emperor Napoleon but the United States does not have a King George
of the House of Washington? There are moments in our history where the citizens of the world stand
up and for their beliefs, their honor, and themselves. They come together to reform the existing
government that is holding them back from achieving their desired lifestyle. When this occurs, most
likely, war is inevitable to follow. When war comes to a country, death and destruction is destined.

When that monarchy went against the colonists, and regarded them a part of the empire, this was not
entirely how the colonist s wished to identify themselves. America and its colonists wished to
establish themselves as being independent from a monarchy and to have a say in how they were ruled.
After the revolution was over, Washington went back to Mount Vernon to retire, or so he thought.
When Washington was asked by his fellow founding fathers to become the new King of the United
States, his reaction must have been priceless. After fighting the revolution for many long hard years, to
get away from a monarchy, and now they wanted to create another one. Washington had his reasons
why he did not wish to be king because, He was driven by Ameri can nationalism years before
independence was declared, and for eight long years after 1775 he sacrificed as a soldier to bring the
American na¬tion into being. He emerged from retirement to search for a means of safeguarding a
national Union imperiled by sectionalists and localists, and with considerable misgivings he agreed to
take on the presidency in an attempt to establish an energetic national government and a robust and

The Last Duel by Eric Jager Essay
Story of the duel to end all duels
In the story The Last Duel by Eric Jager, fourteenth century in medieval France, a knight by the name
of Jean de Carrouges challenges a squire, Jacques Le Gris, to a duel. The reason for this trial by
combat, a court ordered duel intended by fate of God to determine the truth, was to seek vengeance for
the sake of his own honor. The wife of Jean Carrouges was the young, beautiful, good, sensible, and
modest Marguerite. She was expected to maintain a ladylike mannerism and remain loyal to her
husband. When the couple traveled to Capomensil to visit Carrouges mother in law Marguerite stayed
under her watch while Carrouges set out on a journey in desperate need of cash. While away on his

It wasn t possible for him to succeed in this crime alone, so he had to of had help from someone. His
companion in this attack was a squire by the name of Adam Louvel, who Jacques secretly summoned
after he learned of Carrouges plan to visit Paris. Louvel served under Carrouges in the Cotentin
campaign and actually knew him well. Ironically Louvel had a house in Capomesnil, where
Marguerite was staying with her mother in law. It is very possible that since Le Gris knew Carrouges
was leaving on a journey he could have traveled to Capomesnil and stayed with Louvel until his
opportunity arose when Nicole de Carrouges left the house for a short amount of time to handle
business in Saint Pierre. This is where my suspicions of Le Gris having everything planned grew
because he must have known Nicole was called away to a town six miles away, and accordingly
planned and timed when he would enter the home, how long it would take to complete the brutal
attack, and enough time to leave and form an alibi.
Jacques Le Gris was established as a man who was known for seducing women. It was rumored his
approach to Marguerite was an offer of money for sex, but she did not care for his money and wouldn
t submit herself to his will . This is when the encounter became physical because Le Gris was going to
get what he wanted wether she liked it or not. For a woman, Marguerite fought long and strong, but

Acid Base Balance Paper
Fluids and Electrolytes, Acid Base Balance
Fluid and electrolytes balance is defined as the process of regulating the extracellular fluid volume,
body fluid osmolality, and plasma concentrations of electrolytes (Giddens, 2013 ). Having an excess
or deficit of fluids or electrolyte can be deadly to the human body. Mr. D.H. arrived at the hospital
with an electrolyte imbalance. He had a sodium balance of 126 which normally it is 145 and a
potassium balance of 5.3 which has a normal range of 3.5 to 5. His hematocrit also was at 63%
showing that he was dehydrated. Mr. D.H. was in diabetic ketoacidosis and needed to be treated to

Mr. D.H. was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic Ketoacidosis can be triggered by stress
or infection. In this case the tooth infection probably caused the DK. There are several other
electrolytes that are affected by DKA. One electrolyte that is most affected by DKA is potassium.
Potassium levels are usually high due to acidosis. Acidosis causes the potassium to shift from the cells
into the extracellular fluids (Giddens, 2013). Acidosis causes hydrogen ions to diffuse from the blood
into the interstitial fluid because there is an excess of hydrogen ions in the blood. When they diffuse
they push the potassium ions out of the cell (Van Meter, 2013). Sodium is also affected greatly by
DKA. Sodium levels are lower because of the movement of water from the intracellular space to the
extracellular space. This is due to hyperglycemia, the body tries to get rid of the excess glucose
through urination (Van Meter , 2013). When sodium is lowered or depleted it causes impaired nerve
conduction, fatigue, muscle cramps, and abdominal cramps (Van Meter, 2013). This would explain the

what else it can do and how it can be worked into treatments.
That does not mean it is not effective in helping the body. Research supports a role for it in a variety of

Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Frankenstein
Coleridge s Rime of the Ancient Mariner tells the story of an ancient mariner who kills an albatross
and brings upon himself and his ship s crew a curse. The ancient mariner travels the world,
unburdening his soul, telling his story to whomever needs to hear it. Shelley alludes to the poem
several times.
Robert Walton in Frankenstein is similar to the Wedding Guest from Rime of the Ancient Mariner,
with Victor Frankenstein playing the role of the mariner. As the mariner feels compelled to share his
story to one who needs to hear it, so does Victor. The explicit theme in Rime of the Ancient Mariner,
that love conquers all, is a clue as to how the tragedy that occurs in Frankenstein s life could have
been avoided.

The very deep did rot: O Christ! That ever this should be! Yes, slimy things did crawl with legs Upon
the slimy sea (Coleridge pt. II, st. 9).
This quote shows The Mariner s outlook on nature in the beginning of the poem. The Mariner refers to
the creatures of the sea as slimy things, which obviously has a negative connotation. However, once
Coleridge teaches his character the lesson of the inherent beauty in nature, the Mariner learns that all
creatures are beautiful. In Shelley s piece, which also has this theme, it seems that Frankenstein really
never learns this lesson, while the creature does seem to grasp this concept.
I beheld those I loved spend vain sorrow upon the graves of William and Justine, the first hapless
victims to my unhallowed arts (Shelley 79).
This quote shows Shelley s theme of how devastating the consequences can be for one single
unthinking act. Obviously, Victor s single unthinking act was his creation of the creature. When he
made this creature, there is no way that he thought he would kill two of his closest loved ones, and
later kill more. However, it happened and Shelley is showing us how devastating the effects can be.
Similarly, in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Mariner also suffers for a single, unthinking act.
His act was the killing of the albatross. He paid for it in more than one way. First, he was sent to a Life
in Death, then after he

Hotspur Metaphors
In Shakespeare s Henry IV, Part 1, Hotspur, the most talented young warrior in England, leads a
rebellion against King Henry IV while, Hal, the king s seemingly lazy, indifferent son and heir to the
throne, fights against Hotspur for the throne. Hal and Hotspur have a similar ideology as seen in their
common metaphors; however, Hal speaks with various extended metaphors, biblical allusions, and
strategically places his use of verse and prose while Hotspur speaks with simpler metaphors, war
imagery, and mainly speaks in verse. Shakespeare emphasizes these speech patterns to demonstrate
Hal s ability to manipulate the world to his benefit and Hotspur s extremely volatile sensibility, and
thus, proves Hal to be more qualified to rule than Hotspur.
Hal and Hotspur share some of the same metaphors, most notably, their common use of debt as a
metaphor for honor and responsibility, which indicates how they both see these values in a mercantile
fashion. In Hal s first soliloquy, he says he will pay the debt I never promised (I.2.77), a reference to
his plan to act like a drunken thief, so when he becomes king, he will seem like a greater leader. Hal
saying he will pay the debt , or him being an effective king, displays how he thinks that he can easily
exchange his immature behavior for honor and that being a good king can instantly buy the favor of
the people. Also, the word debt implies that Hal believes that the king has an important obligation to
be honorable to the kingdom. Hotspur also uses the metaphor, saying King Henry IV Studies day and
night / To answer all the debt he owes to you / Even with the bloody payment of your deaths (I.3.184
186). Because Hotspur s father and uncle helped King Henry take the throne, Hotspur believes that the
king has a responsibility to treat them well, which he does not fulfill. This illustrates how Hotspur also
views honor as a transaction: when given, it must be repaid. Both Hal and Hotspur believe that honor
can be exchanged like goods, and they view honor, like debt, as a responsibility that must be
maintained, indicating they understand the importance of honor in society.
Hal and Hotspur share a similar ideology, but Hal s elevated language portrays him as more

Biography of Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott Lucretia Mott was born in January of 1793 and died in November of 1880. During her
87 years on the Earth, she did everything that she could in order to demand change and social reform
in societal programs in which she did not believe. She was born a Quaker, also known as the Society
of Friends, a religious group which believed in relative equality and in nonviolence. In the period in
which she was born and raised, women were supposed to be seen and not heard. They were to be
subservient to men in all things, including the home and the work force, if indeed the woman were
allowed to work at all. Yet Mott, nee Coffin, refused to let society marginalize her and demanded

Organic Food Vs Organic Foods
Organically grown foods are not new to the world, they have been around since Native Americans
lived on the land. Most people do not buy organic goods because of the cost and fear that the foods
have been contaminated with different types of disease insects carry. Some do not even know what
organic foods are; organic foods are foods produced by organic farming. while the standards differ
worldwide, organic farming in general features cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that
foster recycling of resources, promote ecological balance a conserve biodiversity (Arnett, 1). The U.S
Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates the organic food and make sure it is clean enough for
human consumption. Different health organizations around the country try to encourage people to add
organic to their diet. Conventional food chemicals are polluting the soil and finding their way into
people s water systems and slowly destroying their bodies. The destruction finds its way through the
consumption of the food or the chemicals in the water. Despite the cost difference, organically grown
foods are better than non organic foods because they are healthier for human consumption, are more
sustainable for the environment, and support the local food movement. All over the world people are
making the switch to organic because it is a better choice for one s health. Some people may not even
know what organic grown food is. Organic is a substance that is grown and not treated with any

The Golden Parachute Option for CEO s
Imagine being in a world where people are paid in cash bonuses, stock options, or generous severance
pay when fired from their job due to a company merger, are asked to leave, or choose to retire. This
happens to be a reality for many CEO s and top executives of companies. We live in an economy
where mergers and take over s have become common, and to allow this option for the highest paid
employees of a company is arguably unfair. While researching golden parachutes, I formed questions
due to the circumstances surrounding this executive option. For example, why should CEO s, who live
very comfortably, be given a compensation package for losing their position due to a company merger
or retirement when employee and shareholder s futures are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Once executives were getting these highly substantial payments, shareholders quickly questioned
executives for their integrity and motive due to this high increase in payment amounts. There have
been many debated reasons in support of and against golden parachutes on account of the increase in
payment amounts and how the terms of their severance package were written out.
It interests me how easy someone can be opposed to golden parachutes from a middle class citizen s
view, where we all want to be paid the same dollar figures as top executives. It s strongly argued
golden parachutes give the feeling that CEO s and top executives are solely looking out for
themselves, not considering how investors and employees will be impacted by mergers. As I stated in
my opening paragraph, Why should CEO s be given a compensation package for losing their job due
to a company merger or retirement when employee and shareholder s futures are at stake? Andrew
Ross Sorkin supported this notion in his article Executive Pay: A Special Report; Those Sweet Trips to
the Merger Mall in which he stated, Mergers and acquisitions can be get rich quick paths for top
corporate managers, providing a personal incentive to get the deal done, no matter what happens to
shareholders. And they are no longer just for chief executives who sell their companies

Why I Chose Mexico Research Paper
There are many options to think about when choosing a global career. One that interests me would be
my home country of Mexico. Even though I was born there I was raised in the United States my whole
life. It would be nice to explore my roots beyond the small amount of visiting I have done. I currently
still have a lot of family that lives and works in Mexico. My family ranges from jobs in industrial
factories to careers in Politics. In past conversations with them I have learned that the working needs,
set up and pay is much different to the United States. Bigger companies such as the industrial factories

This means that I would constantly have to be looking out for myself because the support from my
work team would be very minimal. This would be a red flag to me because I like to consider myself to
be a team player. Another point of concern is the power distance and how high it is at 81% percent
according to Hofstede. That is very accurate going back to my uncle s experience in politics and how
the person with higher power will do as he pleases even if it goes against ethics. The business
practices for wanting to think ahead are unpleasant thoughts for businesses in Mexico. They are more
worried of what s going on now which would be a bit different to what I m used to. I always like to
think and plan ahead. Men are dominating within the working field. This can be due to the traditions
and heritage to which many Mexicans have been raised upon. Within my family back home it is very

a sign of respect to always let a man lead when making decisions which is why it isn t surprising that

Aquatic biologists from the Cape Cod National Seashore have published newsletters stating that
increased intertidal volume produces greatly increased tidal flushing. Better flushing will reduce
floodwater mosquito breeding on the wetland surface, dilute the presently high fecal coliform counts
that have closed river mouth shellfish beds, and improve water column aeration by flooding the
wetland twice each day with oxygen rich Cape Cod Bay water (CCNS, 2011). After the restoration
begins taking place and the water levels are allowed to rise, the greater amounts of water will impact
where they once dominated in the wetland soils that have fallen to being drained by the dike. This
will, in turn, offset the chemical effects of the dam that caused acidity issues and toxic metal presence
which has killed off fish populations in adjacent effected waterways (Portnoy and Giblin,

The Tension Between National Security And Individual Privacy
The Situation
The tension between national security and individual privacy has long existed even before the
development of digitized information. Recently, two main forces have advanced the debate over this
balance to the forefront of the public eye: 1) the proliferation of data by private sector companies and
2) the heightened need for homeland security and public defense. With the rapid evolution of
technology, companies have aggregated pools of consumer data to improve upon internal decision
making. In some cases, however, this data can be leveraged to ensure national security and public
safety. This juxtaposition of enterprise and security results in a blurring of the line dividing public and
private sector responsibilities. The question becomes an issue of moral obligation versus legal
responsibility. What are we as consumers and citizens willing to sacrifice in exchange for safety? And
does the private sector inevitably succumb to obligations originating from the public sector?
The company on the forefront of this issue is Apple. After the tragic events in San Bernardino, CA on
December 2, 2015, the United States FBI located an iPhone 5C belonging to one of the terrorists. The
FBI, however, was unable to access the phone and formally requested Apple to unlock the device to
facilitate the search for information about the killers. Apple swiftly refused and after several weeks of
back and forth, the FBI filed a case against Apple (Nakashima April 2016). This case

We chose Costco for our term paper because of the high opinion each of us had towards it. We are all

However unlike the US, Hofstede indicates the Mexico has a very high degree of uncertainty
avoidance , which means that its people are very orthodox and rigid in their beliefs; there is usually no
tolerance for new innovations or ideas. The remaining nations, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan also
share some of the same characteristics as Mexico, so Hofstede characterizes them as collectivists
societies as well. Given these cultural contexts, it is safe to say that Costco embeds itself and operates
within a variety of different cultures.
Organizational Culture
In terms of Costco s organizational culture itself, Costco refuses to look at itself as a big Wall Street
corporation, instead it works to maintain itself more as a small company even though it is the country
s 4th largest retailer by volume. Its espoused values can be drawn from its vision statement which
says: In order to achieve our mission we will conduct our business with the following Code of Ethics
in mind: obey the law, take care of our members, take care of our employees and respect our vendors .
Former long time CEO Jim Sinegal s driving vision for Costco still dominates and it is all about
conceiving that small company feeling and he did this by creating value from within. Of course for
Sinegal, creating value from within meant taking good care of Costco s 160,000 employees, which is
explicitly stated in the vision

Depression s Upside By Jonah Lehrer
Depression s Upside a New York Times article written by Jonah Lehrer takes a different approach
when looking at depression. He notes that Charles Darwin s depression allowed Darwin to concentrate
on his work and therefore accelerated his research. The article looks at how depression changes the
way someone thinks and processes their environment on an evolutionary standpoint. This article
focuses on research by psychiatrist Andy Thomson and psychologist Paul Andrews, who took a
special interest in evolutionary psychology. They wanted to concentrate on the evolutionary root of
depression, thus began the outlook of rumination; the thought processes that surrounds depression.
Thomson and Andrews formed the analytical rumination hypothesis which states, the rumination
thoughts forces an individual to over think and become very analytical and hyper focus on their own
flaws causing their depression. Many studies show that the constant negative thoughts lead to
depression, however Thomson and Andrews were more concerned with the evolutionary purpose of
rumination, if there is one? They explained the purpose as a fever that sends white blood cells into
overdrive in order to fight off infections, depression might be the fever that fights off one s affliction.
Rumination often starts because of a psychological blow, leading to a cycle of negativity which can be
hard to get out of, if the psychological blow continues to affect an individual, they tend to fixate on the
problem and

No Child Left Behind Argumentative Essay
Four words drove me into retirement No Child Left Behind. I could no longer attend to the needs and
wants of my students. All I was supposed to do was get them ready to take tests (Steve Eklund). Steve
Eklund, a schoolteacher in California, states this claim when asked his opinion on No Child Left
Behind by Education Votes, a page run by the National Education Association. Through this, he shows
his complete disapproval of the act and expresses just one of the reasons that many see it as a burden
to American education. Beginning in 2001, George W. Bush declared to the American people that it
was time to make a change in the American education system. The idea was dubbed No Child Left
Behind. The bill was later signed into law on January ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The act was made to follow up Lyndon B. Johnson s Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which
was created on April 9th, 1965. However, the No Child Left Behind act twisted itself to negatively
influence the American education system by implementing inane standards and learning targets that do
not measure actual learning.
One overlying problem seen is within the testing that takes place. Through the act standardized testing
is implemented as a way to determine student proficiency levels, taking typical daily subjects out of
the day to make room for test taking curriculum. Teachers are no longer spending a majority of time
on practical real world skills, but are cramming the days with test taking strategies and skills needed to
prove their intelligence to the United States government. High stakes testing causes teachers to teach
to the test, which means narrowing content to focus solely on topics covered by the tests (Bohrnstedt
et. al. 324). Students are no longer yearning for an education but rather more are dropping out yearly
since No Child Left Behind has taken place, due to the intense testing that is now required. Teachers

relationship is advancing to the next stage which is moving in together. This, my friends, is an ideal
scenario of moving into an apartment with your significant other before marriage, which is known as
premarital cohabitation. Some couples participate in premarital cohabitation which is becoming part of
a lifestyle for younger couples. Students that are in college, or young adults around 20 to 30, and even
students that just graduated high school are moving in together. Couples who participate in premarital

they have a good quality and stable relationship, and if they are compatible for each other.

International Students And Higher Education
International Students is rising in the U.S.
It is obvious that due the declining education funding and drooping domestic student enrollment have
forced many U.S. colleges and universities to adopt new revenue strategies and attracting international
students seems a reasonable solution. This strategy aims to bring more revenue to the institutions as
well a more diverse environment through a greater diversity of languages, cultures, and perspective in
the classroom.
According to Global Student Mobility, the global demand for international higher education is
growing rapidly, and it is forecast to rise from 1.8 million international students in 2000 to 7.2 million
international students in 2025 globally. The U.S. higher educational system remains the most
respected and recognized, attracting the largest number of international students. The leading
contributors to the U.S. total are China, India, South Korea and the most recent one Saudi Arabia
sponsored by their scholarship program. Larger institutions tend to attract the most international
students, however, small institutions are not far behind.
I believe Ship should continue outreaching to the local International Community Colleges, develop a
more intense marketing strategy and recruitment plan for international students. Ship should be keep

The Pricing Strategy Of T Shirts
This type of pricing gives customers a good deal and encourages them to buy more which saves on
packaging in which seller gives quantity discount. In this case the bundle of 5 T shirts s priced lower
than the sum of the price of individual T shirt. This type of pricing is based on the demand schedule
where customers may have high willingness to pay for T shirt but not for 5 T shirts, and the pricing
discount is to match customer willingness to pay. 5 T shirts are packed for one price using a bundling
pricing which is a second degree price discrimination that used to extract consumer surplus. This is an
example of a promotional bundle in the mixed bundling category in which the bundled price of the 5
Tshirt is lower than the total price of individual product price added together. The consumers have the
choice of buying packs of 5 T shirts or buying a T shirt without the pack. In this pricing strategy
identical T shirts are packaged together in order to enhance profits by forcing customers to make an all
decision. The mixed bundling pricing provides a means by which the company can get the consumer
to pay the full value of the 5 units of packaging 5 T shirt a product and selling them as one package,
the company can earn more than selling per T shirt price. The profit maximizing price is the 5 T shirt
for $10 on a pack is the total value the consumer receives for the package, including consumer surplus

Death and Time in Slaughterhouse-Five
Death and Time in Slaughterhouse Five
We all wish we could travel through time, going back to correct our stupid mistakes or zooming ahead
to see the future. In Kurt Vonnegut s novel Slaughterhouse Five, however, time travel does not seem
so helpful. Billy Pilgrim, Vonnegut s main character, has come unstuck in time. He bounces back and
forth between his past, present, and future lives in a roller coaster time trip that proves both senseless
and numbing. Examining Billy s time traveling, his life on Tralfamadore, and the novel s
schizophrenic structure shows that time travel is actually a metaphor for our human tendency to avoid
facing the unpleasant reality of death.
Because he cannot control time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are plenty of other moments of time, they reason, when that person is alive. Therefore, death
can be overlooked as a chronological inconvenience.
This philosophy of life and death they instill in Billy himself, speaking to him in a disembodied voice
which floats down into the zoo cage which serves as his home:
We spend eternity looking at pleasant moments like today at the zoo. Isn t this a nice moment? Yes.
[Billy answered] That s the one thing Earthlings might learn to do, if they tried hard enough: Ignore
the awful times, and concentrate on the good ones. (117)
But ignoring death and its suffering is exactly what Billy should not be doing, Vonnegut suggests. To
do so makes him, like the Tralfamadorians, alien and inhuman. He has no sense of his own mortality,
an awareness he needs in order to understand that, as Stephen Marten has observed, life is valuable not
because it is infinite but because it is so scarce (11).
Curiously, Vonnegut uses the Tralfamadorian idea that books, like life, should have no beginning, no
middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, no effects (88). As he states on the title page of , his
novel is written somewhat in the telegraphic, schizophrenic manner of the tales of the planet

movie Sleepy Hollow is based upon the book The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, there are also distinctions
which allow each to tell their own tale. Washington Irving s short story inspired Tim Burton s film but
did not limit it. The foundations of the two are much the same but their story lines unfold diversely.
Some of the similarities include the setting, characters, and plot points. Two of the many contradicting
ideas are the character of Ichabod Crane and the conclusions. The similarities and differences of both
accounts can be stated plainly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ichabod s personality does not quite relate precisely from the book to the movie. He is a self assured
smart man in the story that always knows what he is doing. Unlike his written character, Burton s
Ichabod faints frequently and never seems to know what he is doing. Ichabod Crane is two different
people in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Sleepy Hollow. The conclusions of the book and movie
greatly differ from one another. In the end there seem to be one major relevant point. The short story s
main closing idea is Katrina did not choose Ichabod. Whereas the film s final note is the Headless
Horseman is gone and no longer out to kill. Ichabod and Katrina s fate together are not the same in the
book and movie. They do not end up together in the book but they do in the movie. Ichabod s future
also contrasts. There are rumors on what happened to him in the story, but mainly he simply
disappears after facing the Headless Horseman. Shown in the film, Ichabod survives his meeting with
the evil specter and together he and Katrina move to New York. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow the
book and Sleepy Hollow the movie s closure are immensely differentiated. Supposing that the book
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow influenced the movie Sleepy Hollow, both compare and contrast
clearly. They have similar core ideas but different versions of the plot and initiatives that go with that.
Irving s myth is a romance while Burton s

American Gay Rights
Lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender Americans face many oppressions and do not share the same
civil rights as their fellow heterosexual citizens. In my opinion, your sexual preferences should not
dictate your civil rights. Sadly, this is not the case in America. The Declaration of Independence
proclaims that all men are created equal with the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
However, in today s society homosexual are not giving the same opportunity to achieve their pursuit
of happiness. Many LGBT Americans have fought and still fighting for the rights, safety, and freedom
of this country but are still not given the same rights as heterosexual Americans. #2 Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Americans should have the same rights as heterosexual Americans
in all fields including but not limited too are marriage equality, job security, and human rights. #3
Since 1970, there have been numerous amount of lawsuits against cities, counties, and state for the
denial of marriage. Throughout history, LGBT citizens have been denied their right to marry clearly
due to being the same sex. According to ProCon.org, in 1970 in Minnesota two men, Baker and

what makes us the same for what we are (Driscoll). Although, we are unique and different in many
ways based on our gender, our race, our culture, and as well as our sexuality. We all blessed to live
today in America to chase our American Dream, as the Declaration of Independence states, with the
right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Remember, many LGBT Americans have risk their lives
for their country fighting for the rights, freedom, and safety, but in return, they are not granted the

What Is Michelangelo s Pieta
The sculpture I have chosen to do my critical analysis project on this week is Michelangelo s Pieta.
Which was created during the period of 1498 1500, after a request was made by a cardinal Jean de
Billheres. The cardinal requested a sculpture that would be placed in a side chapel at Old St. Peter s
Basilica, which was in Rome. Resulting from that request was a beautiful sculpture of the Virgin Mary
holding Christ s body after his crucifixion. The piece created was multi figure which was rare for this
time period. It also was a full round piece with the dimensions of 5 9 x 6 5 . The sculpture was created
using a subtractive method. The subtractive method was executed on a block of Carrara marble. This
type of marble is a white and blue stone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their heads are represented proportionally yet the body of the Virgin Mary is not it is much larger than
Christ s. The reason for this is most likely due to the fact that Christ is laying a crossed her lap, and
needed to be supported appropriately. The drapery which appears from Virgin Mary s lap down gives
more dimension and makes Christ look like he belongs nestled in his mother s lap. The line technique
used throughout the sculpture adds to the flow of the sculpture. Virgin Mary s one arm is rested
underneath her son and the other is positioned away from him almost in a position as if she was
praying or hoping someone was looking down upon them and the situation they were in. The way the
Virgin Mary is looking down at her son makes a focal point from her to her son. When this sculpture
is in place in St. Peter Basilica the light streams into the building from three large windows which
hitting the sculpture just right will only add to focal points of the sculpture making them even more
noticeable. This only draws more attention to her face, and the beautiful features she was given by the
artist. Both of the figures have a somber look on their faces which represents the situation they are in.
Being as Virgin Mary is now being faced with her child s death as he is rested upon her

Reflection On The Stamp Act Of 1765
Today, I sat down with my family at our home in Boston, and we had a very interesting conversation
about the most recent actions of the British Parliament that is hurting all of the colonists, their
families, and communities that we live in. Of course, I am talking about the Stamp Act of 1765. At
first, I thought I was the only person in our family who paid any attention to the political events and
unfair actions of good old mother England. I was a little nervous about how our family was going to
react when I told them that I had just signed up to be a member of the Sons of Liberty. My family was
very interested in what the Sons of Liberty were going to do to help the colonists in the fight against
what all colonists see as unfair taxation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The colonist argued to the king that the representatives should be the only ones to tax the colonist.
They thought it wasn t fair and started using the phrase taxation without representation . Which meant
that the colonist wanted a say in whether the taxes should be balanced or not. In my opinion, I believe
that it wasn t fair and the British should let us have a say. Which everybody believes that too probably.
After the declaring of the stamp act, The Patriots formed a group of protesters known as the Sons of
Liberty. Who fought for the other colonists. The leader of these protesters were the one and only,
Samuel Adams. These protesters used many the different methods, but the one that stood out was the
method of intimidation to get tax collectors to resign from their job. this method worked really well
for the Sons of Liberty. This is one of the many phenomenal reasons that the Sons of Liberty were an
import role in the American revolution.
In the year of 1766, a group of protesters known as the Stamp Act congress started meeting in the
great and wonderful City of New York City. The dates of the meeting were the month of October 7
until October 23, 1765. In result of this act of the Stamp Act Congress, The British repealed on the
date of, March 18,1766. Which caused the act to have no more play on the colonists. Now the
Americans have the freedom of the possession of paper

  • 2. Kurt Cobain Research Paper I d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not. Kurt Cobain was legendary in music and he meant what he said. He never changed himself and that was seen throughout his life. His resistance to change made him the influential person he was and created the spokesman for so many young people that resented the culture of the day. Kurt was a fiery, impulsive, and rebellious person in his childhood, in his musical success, and in his explosive, memorable end. Everyone has a beginning, and for Kurt, his beginning was full of pain and started him on the path that led to his demise. Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Hoquiam, Washington to Donald Cobain and Wendy Cobain (McDougall 16). Kurt was a joyful kid, and he was a fantastic artist. His art teacher at Aberdeen High School ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Around this time Kurt started taking drugs and alcohol, a choice that would eventually ruin his life, but he also met a local band The Melvins (McDougall 29). The leader of this group Buzz Osborne took Kurt to a punk rock concert, which changed the way Kurt saw music and influenced most of his later works. After high school, Kurt began living on the streets as an outcast and sometimes sleeping under bridges or on benches. He started taking any drugs that were available to him and his life seemed like it was going nowhere (McDougall 34). However, no one could have predicted that his musical talents would change music as we know it and he would become one of the most influential artists ever. With Kurt s life seemingly becoming worthless, he began to pursue music and that led to his most memorable success, Nirvana. Prior to Nirvana Kurt had very little to no musical success, his first band, Fecal Matter, was started in 1986 and was really nothing more than a small, insignificant Seattle garage band (McDougall 34). The problem in this case is weather are not it is the correct decision to accelerate the launch of the Toyota Prius a car built with the new hybrid technology. The TMC (Toyota Motor Company) identified an untapped market in the US in the 1970 s when they saw there was a demand for a small fuel efficient car due to the raising gas prices. This was a market the Big Three were not equipped to meet. Toyota and other Japanese car manufactures were able to take advantage of this market need and obtain top positions in this market. They were able to survive and succeed in this market by offering more reliable cars than the Big Three and operating efficient plants to control costs. By the 90 s there was ... The customer base for Toyota was not growing and more of a following due to loyalty to their past performance. The company had also lost its innovative edge and with this was losing its market share. I see due to Toyota s lack of initiative by not moving more manufacturing to the US and innovation as an opportunity to enter the small car market that was previously dominated by the Japanese manufactures. With all this said Toyota still had a great reputation for producing a very reliable product, with this reputation Toyota could be one change away from becoming a major player ... • 4. Benefits Of Organ Replacement Using Cloning Technique 1. Counter argument: It has a great contribution to organ replacement. When scientists are dealing with organ replacement using cloning technique, they no longer use Reproductive Cloning Technique (RCT) but they use Therapeutic Cloning Technique (TCT). Both techniques require the same laboratory procedures just that in RCT, they will insert the cloned embryos into the womb to grow until birth and in TCT, they will kill the cloned embryos for the stem cell. This stem cell is what the scientists get interested in because they could use this stem cell to generate and harvest new and healthy organs that are entirely functioning. In the context of biology, the stem cell is very useful because it just like the ultimate mother for every cell. It can differentiate into whatever cell when the body needs. Therefore, when organ transplant is necessary for the patient, and there is no organ donor, scientists could use the stem cell to produce the same organ for transplant and save life. Considering the huge number of people on the organ donation waiting lists, this is extremely beneficial. 2. Supporting details: Embryonic stem cells act as an alternative source of cells because stem cell, can differentiate into any desired tissues or cells. Combining tissue engineering and cloning technique, replacement of organ by using the patient s own stem cell is possible at all stage. 3. The general requirement to create a trust is that if the trust is properly constituted, it bind the settlor and be enforceable by the beneficiaries. On the other hand, if the trust is not completely constituted, it will be ineffective as the general rule requires. Equity will not be able to help because of two of its maxims equity will not assist a volunteer and equity will not perfect the imperfect gift . The court will be prevented from coming to the aid of a volunteer beneficiary regardless of how undesirable the outcome might appear. i. Is this a gift in favour of the sister or a trust in favour of his friends? If it is a trust, has the settlor sufficiently shown intention to subject the property to a trust obligation? An express trust is created if only the settlor can show that he intended to subject the property to a trust obligation. It is necessary for the settlor to show that he intend to create a trust instead of some other type of legal relationship, e.g. gift, a power or bailment. As Megary .J. put it in Re Kayford Ltd, the question is whether in substance a sufficient intention to create a trust has been manifested . However, a trust can be created ... The design was interesting and eye catching, two necessary elements for my site. I kept the design on the site for over six months, before taking it down and rebuilding. Almost a year after the graphic went up on my site, the person who designed it saw it on another site. After he showed me, he expressed his disappointment. Eric Chabrow explains: That s because pre Internet, intellectual property was fairly easy to protect. Books, illustrations, and reports could all be held in your hands. Even computer software, though trickier to protect, usually resides on disks that can be protected. But the Internet makes it a cinch for any PC owner to copy and distribute that is, to publish virtually anything on the World Wide Web. This powerful technology threatens to make copyright and other intellectual property protections obsolete. (Chabrow, Copyrights: What s Left?) • 9. How Did The Unification Of Italy Lead To Italian Unification Before 1815, the Italian Peninsula had not been unified since the fall of the Roman Empire and cultural divisions made it difficult for the Italian people to gain unity again. Groups in several Italian states began to push the idea of a unified country but Italy went through many obstacles attempting to unify and become what we know as Italy today. Italy was divided into competing states which made it difficult for the people because they considered themselves a part of their city, not as part of a bigger Italy. Secondly, The Congress of Vienna divided Italy up among Austria, Hapsburg, and the French. Finally, Nationalist revolts were continually crushed by Austria. The weak national feeling that the people of Italy were feeling was because they found it difficult to identify with Italy as a country and still felt one with their individual cities. Italy was divided up among Austrian rulers, Hapsburg monarchs, and a French Bourbon king. The foreign countries had control over the Italian states which brought a huge obstacle to the unification. Since Austria controlled most of the eight states, the first obstacle was the fact that Austria used their influence to suppress the unification to protect their own interest and keep Austria stable. France sent troops to Rome to protect the Pope which hindered the unification of the country in the final stage. • 10. Prufrock T.S. Eliot s poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock examines a single character, Prufrock, who has been influenced by three very different modes of thinking: Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. These influences cause inner conflict within the character that he struggles to overcome throughout the course of the poem. Eliot s Prufrock is both psychologically and socially crippled because he embodies both Romantic and Realist ideals, i.e. the heroism of the individual and the awareness of insurmountable, objective realities, respectively, while possessing the self conscious mind of a man influenced by a culture of Modernism. Robert Cook, in his analysis, titled Emerson s Self Reliance, Sweeney, and Prufrock, of Ralph Emerson s self reliant man, the epitome of a Romantic, and T.S. Eliot s Prufrock, draws a number of distinctions between the two writers. He holds that Prufrock is Eliot s more realistic response to Emerson s idealistic man. Ron Banerjee examines the epigraph of the poem, which is a verse from Dante s Divine Comedy, and, among other things, discovers how it illuminates the unchangeable reality of the world around Prufrock. Romanticism heralds the heroism and nonconformity of the noble individual. The desire to be great and known is innate to all men, including Prufrock; however, Prufrock s crippling self consciousness disables him from breaking away from society as the true Romantic man would strive to do. Why does the United States come out its revolution with a republic instead of a monarchy? Why do the French wind up with an Emperor Napoleon but the United States does not have a King George of the House of Washington? There are moments in our history where the citizens of the world stand up and for their beliefs, their honor, and themselves. The Last Duel by Eric Jager Essay Story of the duel to end all duels In the story The Last Duel by Eric Jager, fourteenth century in medieval France, a knight by the name of Jean de Carrouges challenges a squire, Jacques Le Gris, to a duel. The reason for this trial by combat, a court ordered duel intended by fate of God to determine the truth, was to seek vengeance for the sake of his own honor. The wife of Jean Carrouges was the young, beautiful, good, sensible, and modest Marguerite. She was expected to maintain a ladylike mannerism and remain loyal to her husband. Louvel served under Carrouges in the Cotentin campaign and actually knew him well. Ironically Louvel had a house in Capomesnil, where Marguerite was staying with her mother in law. It is very possible that since Le Gris knew Carrouges was leaving on a journey he could have traveled to Capomesnil and stayed with Louvel until his opportunity arose when Nicole de Carrouges left the house for a short amount of time to handle business in Saint Pierre. This is where my suspicions of Le Gris having everything planned grew because he must have known Nicole was called away to a town six miles away, and accordingly planned and timed when he would enter the home, how long it would take to complete the brutal attack, and enough time to leave and form an alibi. Jacques Le Gris was established as a man who was known for seducing women. It was rumored his approach to Marguerite was an offer of money for sex, but she did not care for his money and wouldn t submit herself to his will . This is when the encounter became physical because Le Gris was going to get what he wanted wether she liked it or not. Potassium levels are usually high due to acidosis. Acidosis causes the potassium to shift from the cells into the extracellular fluids (Giddens, 2013). Acidosis causes hydrogen ions to diffuse from the blood into the interstitial fluid because there is an excess of hydrogen ions in the blood. When they diffuse they push the potassium ions out of the cell (Van Meter, 2013). Sodium is also affected greatly by DKA. Sodium levels are lower because of the movement of water from the intracellular space to the extracellular space. This is due to hyperglycemia, the body tries to get rid of the excess glucose through urination (Van Meter , 2013). When sodium is lowered or depleted it causes impaired nerve conduction, fatigue, muscle cramps, and abdominal cramps (Van Meter, 2013). This would explain the patient s nausea and ... The ancient mariner travels the world, unburdening his soul, telling his story to whomever needs to hear it. Shelley alludes to the poem several times. Robert Walton in Frankenstein is similar to the Wedding Guest from Rime of the Ancient Mariner, with Victor Frankenstein playing the role of the mariner. This quote shows The Mariner s outlook on nature in the beginning of the poem. The Mariner refers to the creatures of the sea as slimy things, which obviously has a negative connotation. However, once Coleridge teaches his character the lesson of the inherent beauty in nature, the Mariner learns that all creatures are beautiful. In Shelley s piece, which also has this theme, it seems that Frankenstein really never learns this lesson, while the creature does seem to grasp this concept. I beheld those I loved spend vain sorrow upon the graves of William and Justine, the first hapless victims to my unhallowed arts (Shelley 79). This quote shows Shelley s theme of how devastating the consequences can be for one single unthinking act. Obviously, Victor s single unthinking act was his creation of the creature. When he made this creature, there is no way that he thought he would kill two of his closest loved ones, and later kill more. However, it happened and Shelley is showing us how devastating the effects can be. Similarly, in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Mariner also suffers for a single, unthinking act. • 17. Hotspur Metaphors In Shakespeare s Henry IV, Part 1, Hotspur, the most talented young warrior in England, leads a rebellion against King Henry IV while, Hal, the king s seemingly lazy, indifferent son and heir to the throne, fights against Hotspur for the throne. Hal and Hotspur have a similar ideology as seen in their common metaphors; however, Hal speaks with various extended metaphors, biblical allusions, and strategically places his use of verse and prose while Hotspur speaks with simpler metaphors, war imagery, and mainly speaks in verse. Shakespeare emphasizes these speech patterns to demonstrate Hal s ability to manipulate the world to his benefit and Hotspur s extremely volatile sensibility, and thus, proves Hal to be more qualified to rule than Hotspur. Hal and Hotspur share some of the same metaphors, most notably, their common use of debt as a metaphor for honor and responsibility, which indicates how they both see these values in a mercantile fashion. In Hal s first soliloquy, he says he will pay the debt I never promised (I.2.77), a reference to his plan to act like a drunken thief, so when he becomes king, he will seem like a greater leader. Hal saying he will pay the debt , or him being an effective king, displays how he thinks that he can easily exchange his immature behavior for honor and that being a good king can instantly buy the favor of the people. Also, the word debt implies that Hal believes that the king has an important obligation to be honorable to the kingdom. Hotspur also uses the metaphor, saying King Henry IV Studies day and night / To answer all the debt he owes to you / Even with the bloody payment of your deaths (I.3.184 186). Because Hotspur s father and uncle helped King Henry take the throne, Hotspur believes that the king has a responsibility to treat them well, which he does not fulfill. This illustrates how Hotspur also views honor as a transaction: when given, it must be repaid. Both Hal and Hotspur believe that honor can be exchanged like goods, and they view honor, like debt, as a responsibility that must be maintained, indicating they understand the importance of honor in society. During her 87 years on the Earth, she did everything that she could in order to demand change and social reform in societal programs in which she did not believe. She was born a Quaker, also known as the Society of Friends, a religious group which believed in relative equality and in nonviolence. In the period in which she was born and raised, women were supposed to be seen and not heard. They were to be subservient to men in all things, including the home and the work force, if indeed the woman were allowed to work at all. Yet Mott, nee Coffin, refused to let society marginalize her and demanded equality. Certain rights, she believed, were inalienable and should not be denied because of either gender or racial differences. She worked for abolition, for women s rights, and many other branches of social reform. In the Quaker community on Nantucket Island where Mott was born, fishing and whaling were the two primary enterprises. The men of the families were almost all employed in one of these two industries. Consequently, much of the time, the men would be out at sea and the women would be charged not only with taking care of the family, but were also responsible for keeping the home, tending any crops, and harvesting from any animals on the land in order to maintain financial security when the men were away. The Tension Between National Security And Individual Privacy The Situation The tension between national security and individual privacy has long existed even before the development of digitized information. Recently, two main forces have advanced the debate over this balance to the forefront of the public eye: 1) the proliferation of data by private sector companies and 2) the heightened need for homeland security and public defense. With the rapid evolution of technology, companies have aggregated pools of consumer data to improve upon internal decision making. In some cases, however, this data can be leveraged to ensure national security and public safety. This juxtaposition of enterprise and security results in a blurring of the line dividing public and private sector responsibilities. Given these cultural contexts, it is safe to say that Costco embeds itself and operates within a variety of different cultures. Organizational Culture In terms of Costco s organizational culture itself, Costco refuses to look at itself as a big Wall Street corporation, instead it works to maintain itself more as a small company even though it is the country s 4th largest retailer by volume. Its espoused values can be drawn from its vision statement which says: In order to achieve our mission we will conduct our business with the following Code of Ethics in mind: obey the law, take care of our members, take care of our employees and respect our vendors . Former long time CEO Jim Sinegal s driving vision for Costco still dominates and it is all about conceiving that small company feeling and he did this by creating value from within. • 31. Depression s Upside By Jonah Lehrer Depression s Upside a New York Times article written by Jonah Lehrer takes a different approach when looking at depression. He notes that Charles Darwin s depression allowed Darwin to concentrate on his work and therefore accelerated his research. The article looks at how depression changes the way someone thinks and processes their environment on an evolutionary standpoint. This article focuses on research by psychiatrist Andy Thomson and psychologist Paul Andrews, who took a special interest in evolutionary psychology. They wanted to concentrate on the evolutionary root of depression, thus began the outlook of rumination; the thought processes that surrounds depression. Thomson and Andrews formed the analytical rumination hypothesis which states, the rumination thoughts forces an individual to over think and become very analytical and hyper focus on their own flaws causing their depression. Many studies show that the constant negative thoughts lead to depression, however Thomson and Andrews were more concerned with the evolutionary purpose of rumination, if there is one? They explained the purpose as a fever that sends white blood cells into overdrive in order to fight off infections, depression might be the fever that fights off one s affliction. Rumination often starts because of a psychological blow, leading to a cycle of negativity which can be hard to get out of, if the psychological blow continues to affect an individual, they tend to fixate on the problem and ... All I was supposed to do was get them ready to take tests (Steve Eklund). Steve Eklund, a schoolteacher in California, states this claim when asked his opinion on No Child Left Behind by Education Votes, a page run by the National Education Association. Through this, he shows his complete disapproval of the act and expresses just one of the reasons that many see it as a burden to American education. Beginning in 2001, George W. Bush declared to the American people that it was time to make a change in the American education system. The idea was dubbed No Child Left Behind. The bill was later signed into law on January ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The act was made to follow up Lyndon B. Johnson s Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which was created on April 9th, 1965. However, the No Child Left Behind act twisted itself to negatively influence the American education system by implementing inane standards and learning targets that do not measure actual learning. One overlying problem seen is within the testing that takes place. Through the act standardized testing is implemented as a way to determine student proficiency levels, taking typical daily subjects out of the day to make room for test taking curriculum. Teachers are no longer spending a majority of time on practical real world skills, but are cramming the days with test taking strategies and skills needed to prove their intelligence to the United States government. High stakes testing causes teachers to teach to the test, which means narrowing content to focus solely on topics covered by the tests (Bohrnstedt et. al. 324). This strategy aims to bring more revenue to the institutions as well a more diverse environment through a greater diversity of languages, cultures, and perspective in the classroom. According to Global Student Mobility, the global demand for international higher education is growing rapidly, and it is forecast to rise from 1.8 million international students in 2000 to 7.2 million international students in 2025 globally. The U.S. higher educational system remains the most respected and recognized, attracting the largest number of international students. The leading contributors to the U.S. total are China, India, South Korea and the most recent one Saudi Arabia sponsored by their scholarship program. In this case the bundle of 5 T shirts s priced lower than the sum of the price of individual T shirt. This type of pricing is based on the demand schedule where customers may have high willingness to pay for T shirt but not for 5 T shirts, and the pricing discount is to match customer willingness to pay. 5 T shirts are packed for one price using a bundling pricing which is a second degree price discrimination that used to extract consumer surplus. This is an example of a promotional bundle in the mixed bundling category in which the bundled price of the 5 Tshirt is lower than the total price of individual product price added together. The consumers have the choice of buying packs of 5 T shirts or buying a T shirt without the pack. In this pricing strategy identical T shirts are packaged together in order to enhance profits by forcing customers to make an all decision. The mixed bundling pricing provides a means by which the company can get the consumer to pay the full value of the 5 units of packaging 5 T shirt a product and selling them as one package, the company can earn more than selling per T shirt price. Death and Time in Slaughterhouse-Five Death and Time in Slaughterhouse Five We all wish we could travel through time, going back to correct our stupid mistakes or zooming ahead to see the future. In Kurt Vonnegut s novel Slaughterhouse Five, however, time travel does not seem so helpful. Billy Pilgrim, Vonnegut s main character, has come unstuck in time. He bounces back and forth between his past, present, and future lives in a roller coaster time trip that proves both senseless and numbing. Therefore, death can be overlooked as a chronological inconvenience. This philosophy of life and death they instill in Billy himself, speaking to him in a disembodied voice which floats down into the zoo cage which serves as his home: We spend eternity looking at pleasant moments like today at the zoo. Isn t this a nice moment? Yes. [Billy answered] That s the one thing Earthlings might learn to do, if they tried hard enough: Ignore the awful times, and concentrate on the good ones. (117) But ignoring death and its suffering is exactly what Billy should not be doing, Vonnegut suggests. To do so makes him, like the Tralfamadorians, alien and inhuman. He has no sense of his own mortality, an awareness he needs in order to understand that, as Stephen Marten has observed, life is valuable not because it is infinite but because it is so scarce (11). Curiously, Vonnegut uses the Tralfamadorian idea that books, like life, should have no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, no effects (88). Although the movie Sleepy Hollow is based upon the book The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, there are also distinctions which allow each to tell their own tale. Washington Irving s short story inspired Tim Burton s film but did not limit it. The foundations of the two are much the same but their story lines unfold diversely. Ichabod Crane is two different people in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Sleepy Hollow. The conclusions of the book and movie greatly differ from one another. In the end there seem to be one major relevant point. The short story s main closing idea is Katrina did not choose Ichabod. Whereas the film s final note is the Headless Horseman is gone and no longer out to kill. Ichabod and Katrina s fate together are not the same in the book and movie. They do not end up together in the book but they do in the movie. Ichabod s future also contrasts. There are rumors on what happened to him in the story, but mainly he simply disappears after facing the Headless Horseman. The cardinal requested a sculpture that would be placed in a side chapel at Old St. Peter s Basilica, which was in Rome. Resulting from that request was a beautiful sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding Christ s body after his crucifixion. The piece created was multi figure which was rare for this time period. Reflection On The Stamp Act Of 1765 Today, I sat down with my family at our home in Boston, and we had a very interesting conversation about the most recent actions of the British Parliament that is hurting all of the colonists, their families, and communities that we live in. Of course, I am talking about the Stamp Act of 1765. At first, I thought I was the only person in our family who paid any attention to the political events and unfair actions of good old mother England. I was a little nervous about how our family was going to react when I told them that I had just signed up to be a member of the Sons of Liberty. They thought it wasn t fair and started using the phrase taxation without representation . Which meant that the colonist wanted a say in whether the taxes should be balanced or not. In my opinion, I believe that it wasn t fair and the British should let us have a say. Which everybody believes that too probably. After the declaring of the stamp act, The Patriots formed a group of protesters known as the Sons of Liberty. Who fought for the other colonists. The leader of these protesters were the one and only, Samuel Adams. These protesters used many the different methods, but the one that stood out was the method of intimidation to get tax collectors to resign from their job. this method worked really well for the Sons of Liberty. This is one of the many phenomenal reasons that the Sons of Liberty were an import role in the American revolution.
