The Life Of The Smithsonian National Museum Of Natural...
At the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History there is an exhibit called "Eternal Life in
Ancient Egypt". This exhibit focuses on Egypt's past with important and interesting artifacts related
to burial techniques and religious beliefs. The most simple answer to why it is important to
understand the way people lived in the past is that we can't truly know ourselves until we understand
where we came from. This essay will analyze the exhibit to show what it's telling us and why it is so
important. To start, a main focus in the exhibit is the Egyptians' old burial rituals. It is widely known
that the Egyptians used to mummify the dead. The exhibit not only displays these mummies, but it
also displays what they were buried with. The objects buried in the tomb with the body are known to
be for the afterlife of the person who is buried. These objects in the exhibit, along with the mummy
and it's sarcophagus, included vessels for food and water, canopic jars for the organs of the mummy,
along with jewelry and figurines of the gods and goddesses of Egypt. Also, the plaques on the inside
of the exhibit's walls read descriptions of ancient Egyptian beliefs and why some of the goods were
buried with the mummy. This can help visitors understand the way of life in ancient Egypt by
putting out these finds for everyone to learn from. The information on burial rituals and objects

On October 9, 2015 I went to the Smithsonian, National Museum of African Art along with
attending the Million Man March down in Washington D.C. The experiences were wonderful and I
was very excited to be at both events. While at the museum I took two tours one at 10 am that was
led by a woman named Nkechi Obi. She talked about docent African Arts. The next one was shortly
after at11 am that was led by a teen ambassador named Nicholas Stewart, who was very intelligent.
He talked about numerous pieces throughout the museum that had some significance to younger
minds so I found that very helpful. After the tour I spent some time down at the mall in DC in which
faced the Capitol. This was the Million Man March that was a very popular event that brought out
many people. I would describe both events as lectures that were powerful and time put to good use.
The reason I chose to go to the African Art Museum is because I have been there before and I enjoy
my time when I go. The tours at the museum consisted of talks about certain pieces in the museum
that fell in a category the tourist wanted to focus on. Nkechi Obi was my first tour guide and the title
of her tour was "Docent African Arts". Her goal throughout the tour was to show pieces of artwork
that showed what Africans may have gone through in the past in slavery. One piece that she focused

The National Maritime Museum is a very welcoming place and vide range of information can be
found on their website. There is as well an interactive part were children with an adult help can
make various things like sea monster mask or globe. Many interesting tasks in "Make your own"

construction and architecture. My favorite work of art is the National Building Museum (Pension
Building) in Washington DC. The building was designed by Montgomery C. Meigs. Construction
began in 1881 and completed in 1887. Meigs based his design on Italian Renaissance precedents,
notably Rome's Palazzo Farnese and the Palazzo della Cancelleria. The building is the largest

Having lived in the Dayton area all my life, I have been to the National Museum of the United
States Air Force many times on family outings, school fieldtrips, and just for fun. Usually I don't

I want to be a surgeon, which will require me to take intensive science courses. My desire to work in

The National Museum of American History It was a nice morning when I have decided to take a trip
to one of the national museums in Washington DC – The National Museum of American History. It
was a great experience to discover something new, and to get some knowledge and a new
information about the history of the United States of America. The museum has a collection of

The two sites that I have chosen to compare are the National Gallery of Art (NGA) and The
Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met). The reason I chose these specific sites was the first images
I saw which made me want to explore the webpages. I will be comparing the visual quality of the
homepage, pictures, text, and content along with the overall quality of the two sites. I will go into
detail about the differences and which site, in my opinion, would be more enjoyable based on their
website. Upon first glance of their homepages, the two sites look completely different in style.
When The Metropolitan Museum homepage loaded, I was in awe of the bold image of a man's face
covered with ink art. It was eye–catching at first, but then I noticed there was no other graphics or
pictures on the homepage. The one slide show picture did not even fill the screen from side to side
either. It left a kind of boring, bland feeling with me. Then I clicked on the link for the National
Gallery of Art homepage. As this site loaded, it filled the computer screen with side to side full
color. The background was a beautiful picture of an elegant cathedral–like building. In the middle of
this eye–catching background was a slide menu where each group had its very own beautiful
picture. Another refreshing feature is that the background image changes often so that each time I

Volunteer work is essential for every individual's life and future careers, it produces a path to
connections in the work force, and promotes on the job learning. My practicum work pairing with
the National Civil War and Medicine Museums was an amazing, educational 20 hours. Even though
I was only there for 20 hours, it was a taste of what I will be tackling in my internship next semester
there. I volunteered for four days, and over those days I had a total of four projects. All of the
project were different, the first was looking up collection software and plugins, then I took inventory
on a case, then I recorded notes on a surgeon's diary, and finally I described each medicine in a
pannier box. All of the people I worked with were immensely friendly and insightful, whenever I
had questions they were content to help answer them. The overall experience was tremendously
insightful, however, there was a few bumps in the road here and there. This practicum was a great
experience that makes me eager for my internship in January. My first day at the National Civil War
and Medicine museum was October 14th, it was an awfully dull experience and not what I was

me that more than half of the staff came down with a bug because of a conference they held earlier

The National Building Museum (NBM) was founded in 1980 without a collection. The museum
currently has about 250,000 objects, primarily photographs and architectural drawings all housed in
7,000 square feet of on–site storage. The NBM's primary collecting focus is everything related to

Currently, the NBM is in the process of creating a collecting plan to strengthen their collections as
well as turn away items not fitting within the scope of the plan. Many museums in the past collected
without regard to the future which creates havoc on contemporary museum administrators, so the

In 1993, a plan to build an exhibit of the Enola Gay in the National Air and Space Museum received
immense amounts of criticism from military historians, journalists, and veterans, as they felt that it
didn't correctly portray the Japanese and those in the American armed forces during the war. The
book's authors offer theories ranging from historical context, how Japan's role in the war was
interpreted, the American people's discomfort regarding Truman's order to drop the bomb, the mood
of Americans during Vietnam, and the American lives spared as a result of the bomb.
Edward Linenthal's Anatomy of a Controversy conveys that Martin Harwit, the director of the
National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, wanted to transform the day of
August 6. The anniversary of Hiroshima had previously been "a day of protest and recrimination,"
and Harwit's goal in mind was to turn the anniversary into one of reflection. If the exhibit was

Between Friday 15th April and Sunday 17th April I visited Zion National Park in Southern Utah.
Although the park's expansive 229 miles of open land differentiate it from the traditional museum, I
soon began to notice several similarities between the way in which the site had been managed by the
National Parks Service and the conventional format of museological spaces.
This first of these came to my attention while riding the free shuttle bus that runs between popular
locations within the park. During the fifteen minute journey from the Zion Canyon Visitor Centre to
the Angels Landing trailhead, a recorded audio tour guides visitors through their surroundings using
several different narrators, with each one focussing on a specific subject. The first of these was a

When I was growing up, my father tried his best to teach me the story of my people and our
struggle. As a child, I did not believe that things were as bad as he said they were. I felt that the
stories he told me were just that, stories of a bygone era. After all, I had plenty of friends of many
different races, and never felt the sting of prejudice. As I have grown, I have learned that the stories
that he told me were indeed true, and have shaped me into the person I am today.
During the summer of 2016, I was blessed to serve as a Conservation Intern at the Smithsonian's
National Museum of American History. It was there that I found a connection to myself that I had
ignored for years. As I wandered through the exhibits, I realized that my history, African American
history, along with countless others, was absent from many of the stories being presented. I spoke
with my mentor about this issue. As we spoke, he told me about the shortage of African American
males in the museum field, and how hard it was to find people like myself. At that moment, I knew
that museums were where I felt I could implement the most change. The Smithsonian also gave me
