Salary Cap History
Executive Summary: In this paper we will examine the history of the salary cap structures in sports
focusing mainly on the version that the NFL uses. We will also take a in–depth look at the four
different areas that makes up the salary cap (Salary Cap, Active Spending, Dead Money and Cap
Space) and impact the cap has had on the players themselves. As well as how it has reshaped the
teams and leagues itself to help the NFL to grow into the Multi Billion Dollar sports empire that it
was become today. Who would have thought that making the decision to place a limit upon spending
and giving everyone the same opportunity for success would have such a profound effect on the
growth and popularity of the sport? Introduction: Salary caps have been ... Show more content on

At the start of the 2014 season the Los Angeles Dodgers had the largest payroll at a staggering
$235,295,219. On the flipside if we were to look at the bottom of this list the Houston Astros opened
the year at $44,544,174 and the Miami Marlins at $47,565,400 or around 20% of the Dodgers
payroll. What I found to be even more staggering is the fact that after the Miami Marlins the next
lowest payroll was $77,062,891 belonging to the Tampa Bay Rays. So while spending money
doesn't always breed success in that four teams in this year's bottom six Oakland, Cleveland,
Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay made the playoffs in 2013 and only three teams in the top six did. This
was an exception to the rule because in 2014 five of the top 10 and seven of the top 15 made the
playoffs while only three teams ranked 19th or higher in payroll achieved any kind of success.
Proving that while spending large amounts of money does not guarantee success, it definitely
doesn't hurt your chances. The other popular belief that I have read is that it helps curb costs so that
owners don't have to spend as much out of their own pockets. Which would make sense however the
sports franchises in themselves are investments that cost hundreds of millions to even multiple
billions of dollars. So the idea they would need to pinch pennies once the initial investment is made
doesn't add up or sit well with the fans who find their rooting interests at the bottom end of the

Timofey Mozgov: The Rise And Fall Of The Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers reached a 4 year deal with Timofey Mozgov worth 64 million dollars just
hours after the beginning of the NBA Free Agency. To be honest, most of us were shocked with the
deal and Twitter without a doubt proved the basketball world's shock. Mozgov however, maybe will
live up to such a large deal and here are the reasons. A year ago, Mozgov was one of the Cavaliers
leading scorers and a key figure in the NBA Finals. His presence and dominant rebounding forced
Steve Kerr to implement to so familiar Warriors " Death Lineup," with Draymond Green at the
center spot. One could argue his rise resulted from the absence of the Cavs' players, but nevertheless
Mozgov demonstrated he could ball with the best of them. Mozgov's skills

The NBA Should Enforce a Hard Salary Cap
How many of you sports fans out there are sick of paying twenty–five dollars for a lousy seat at an
NBA game? How many of you are sick of seeing the same teams in the finals every year? I'm sure
there are thousands of you out there that feel this way, as do I. The way we can fix these problems is
to demand that the NBA enforce a hard salary cap. A hard salary cap would lower ticket prices,
allow for more teams to be more competitive and eliminate the possibility of any future lockouts. If
the three things listed above aren't met, it's hard to say if the NBA will survive at all. I want to see
the NBA survive, but not in the way things are being run now. A hard salary cap is the only way ...

( 1 ) The players realize that they are eliminating their average fan and they don't care. We as fans
should not pay these outlandish ticket prices. A hard salary cap is the only thing that will lower
salaries and ticket prices. If ticket prices aren't lowered, I personally feel that the players can kiss
their pay checks goodbye. But what do other people think.
Some people believe that NBA arenas will fill up in spite of high ticket prices. Just last year Michael
Jordan made 33.14 million dollars while the whole Chicago Bulls salary cap was 26.9 million, and
all season long seats were filled. That means to some that no matter the amount, people will
continue to attend NBA games.
To the people that believe this, I must remind them of Major League Baseball and the situation that
they faced just a few years back. First, players' salaries skyrocketed to obscene levels, alienating
their average fan. Next, the players couldn't decide how to divide up their millions. Finally, they quit
playing the game and their fans quit caring about Major League Baseball. Does any of this sound
familiar? This is exactly what's happening in the NBA right now. If it happened to the American
Pastime it can, and certainly will, happen to the NBA. Yet people, in spite of the lower ticket prices
provided by a hard salary cap, aren't convinced that a hard salary cap is a good idea. They feel that

Social And Economic Impacts Of The Industrial Revolution
Introduction In response to the drastic social and economic impacts of the industrial revolution in
the United States during the mid 19th century, labor union were created in order to facilitate fair
negotiations on the behalf of workers with their employers in regard to work–related difficulties
such as pay, working conditions, along with other amenities. Article 23 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December
1948 following the end of the Second World War identifies the ability to organize trade unions as a
fundamental human right. On a more federal level, the United States Congress also began passing
laws targeted at industries to better working conditions as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Team owners gave the NBPA recognition in 1957; however, due to a lack of interest from the
players and a lack general organization, the NBPA was not taken seriously by anyone, and as a result
did not accomplish anything. This all began to change in the 1960's and 70's, as the dynamic
combination of growing fan interest and the emergence of network television transformed sports
leagues and individual teams into valuable business enterprises. Naturally, the players wanted a
greater share of the expanding wealth; to do so, they had to do it the same ways blue–collar
industrial workers did: through collective bargaining with the help of labor unions, or in this case,
the National Basketball Players Association. Previously dysfunctional and inconsequential, the
NBPA turned to Harvard Law graduate Lawrence 'Larry' Fleisher, an attorney and sports agent.
Hired on as a general counsel in 1962, Fleisher negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement
in all of professional sports in 1967, securing pensions, minimum salaries, and disability pay for its
members. Over the years, the NBPA grew in power as the NBA grew in popularity. With new
massive network television deals, apparel contracts, advertisement air times, ticket sales,
concessions, to name a few sources of the teams' revenue, how to divide the Association's
basketball–related income (BRI) has remained a central topic of debate between players and owners.
Ever since the creation of the Players

The Negative Effects Of The NBA Salary Cap
In one of the most profitable industries in America, the National Basketball Association has
increased in popularity and in revenue since their incorporation. With these growths, stardom and
income have increased exponentially for the players. As the value of the players have risen, the
salary cap has followed. Although the salary cap has risen, star players continue to feel like they are
worth more on the free market than they are being paid. LeBron James, for example, is invaluable to
the NBA's bottom line. Yet, because of the salary cap, he gets paid around the same as Grizzly's
guard Mike Conley who is not considered a top–five point guard in the NBA. Although the NBA
salary cap is in–place to promote competitive balance between the large and small clubs, the result is
talent rich teams can keep getting richer because of low relative maximum player contracts ... Show

If the NBA was to follow Major League Baseball's path and not have a salary cap, we would see
super teams forming left and right. Baseball is a bad model to follow for the NBA because of the
importance of the players. In the MLB, since there are more players per team, their impact on the
game is less than LeBron James' impact. Per Spotrac's payroll tracker, there were three teams in the
MLB who were below league average in payroll and still made the playoffs. In the NBA there are
currently eight teams below average salary who are in playoff contention. As players are more
valuable to teams in the NBA, the salary cap is more important to talent distribution. As there are
benefits to the current salary cap, as it "protects veteran players" (Surowiecki) and "rookies and
prospects"(Engler), the current structure has its benefits and detriments. Yet, if there was no salary
cap, we would see more and more star players team together to form super

Salary Caps In Professional Sports
Salary caps are a very important tool used in professional sports. All 4 major professional sports
leagues in the United States have a salary cap installed into their collective bargaining agreement
between the league and its players. Those four major sports are, the NFL, the NBA, the MLB and
the NHL. A salary cap is defined as s an agreement or rule that places a limit on the amount of
money that a team can spend on players' salaries. It can be as a per–player limit or a total limit for
the team's roster. It is basically put in place to help the small market teams stay competitive. It is
meant so the wealthy teams, also called big market teams, does not always stay dominant by signing
the best players to very big contracts. Salary caps are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are a lot of exceptions teams can use both the main exceptions are, the Larry Bird exception,
early bird exception, non–bird exception. The Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the cap
in order to re–sign their own free agents, up to the player's maximum salary. To be able to use this
exception a player must play for three seasons without clearing waivers or changing teams as a free
agent. The early bird exception is similar to the Larry Bird one. This one allows teams to exceed the
cap to re–sign their own free agents, but with more limited contracts than the Larry Bird exception.
To qualify for this exception the player must play for two seasons without clearing waivers or

The Impact Of Sports On Women's Sports
Traditionally men have dominated the world of sports however in recent year's women's sports have
become popular and with their new found popularity, women's sports have evolved into marketable
leagues of their own. Although women's sports took a huge leap forward, women players still don't
receive the same financial compensation for playing the same sports in the same arenas as their male
counterparts. In Purse Snatching by Donna Lopiano, she points out sexism may have a huge effect
on this financial discrepancy between women and men athletes. Analyzing sports economics may
point to a different reason why women are receiving such a compensation disparity.
Women sports have come a long way, since the days when women were only allowed to watch.
"The past three decades have witnessed a steady growth in women 's sports programs in America
along with a remarkable increase in the number of women athletes (Daniel Frankl 2)" From an early
age women were thought to be "Lady Like"; they are told not to get all sweaty and dirty. Over 200
years later since Maud Watson stepped on the tennis courts of Wimbledon (Sports Media digest 3);
women now compete in all types and levels of sports from softball to National racing. Soccer fans
saw Mia Hamm become the face of Women's soccer around the world , Venus and Serena Williams
are two of the most popular figures in tennis, and Indy car racing had their first woman racer,
Danika Patrick. With all the fame generated by these women in their

NBA Players are Greedy
How many of us would love to make $2.4 million a year? Or even better, how does $126 million
over a six–year period sound? Then again, why stop there? As John Donovan, a sports analyst for
Sports Illustrated and CNN points out, with the average salary of players in the NBA at $2.4 million
a year, and some players with contracts well over $100 million, it's hard to see what many of them
are complaining about. Players in the NBA need to stop being so greedy, agree to a drug policy and
realize that they are employed by the owners and should follow all rules and regulations set by the
league.
Even though the NBA is a multi–billion dollar industry, it does not mean that the owners should

Many players might say that it is the leagues and owners fault for some of the outrageous salaries
being paid, but when the league tries to control the problem, the players are against any of the
suggestions they have. The current salary cap, called a "soft cap", lets teams spend $27 million a
year on player salaries (Donovan, John "NBA"). The problem is that under current rules, there are
too many loopholes a team can use to go well over the limit. One of these loopholes is the Larry
Bird exception that grants teams the ability to resign veteran players without it counting towards the
salary cap. This is why teams like the Chicago Bulls can pay Michael Jordan ($33 million last year)
more than 17 teams pay all of their players combined. The rule was originally designed so that a
team could keep important veteran players and still have money to sign new ones. This rule has now
been misused so much that teams are paying players $100 million plus over a 4–6 year period and
say they are just using the Larry Bird rule.
Team misuse of rules has made it so large teams are making it harder and harder for small teams to
stay competitive. Loren Jorgensen, a sports writer for the Utah paper Deseret News, states that big
market teams like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles can pay players enormous amounts that make it
impossible for the small market teams to hold

The Nba Makes A Profit
The NBA makes a profit in many ways, for example the NBA makes millions of dollars off of
sponsorships, television contracts and selling merchandise. The National Basketball Association
recently signed a new TV agreement with TNT and ESPN to approximately make $2.6 billion per
season. Even with a total of 400 or so odd active players making an average of close to $5 million
annually, national TV contracts generate enough revenue to cover salaries and then some.
This graph depicts league revenue of the National Basketball Association from the 2001/02 season
to the 2014/15 season (Statistica, 2016). As seen the chart above clearly indicates the NBA makes a
profit and has been gradually increasing throughout the years, except for the season of 2011/12 but
that's because the season was shorted due to the lockout that had taken place.
The NBA has many different sponsors. Sponsorship spending On the NBA Totals $739 Million in
2014–2015 Season up 8.9 percent from the previous year, according to IEG research. A list of the
NBA sponsors are Anheuser Busch, Gatorade, Coca cola, Adidas, Miller Coors, Kia Spalding, Geico
and etc. Anheuser–Busch is the most active sponsor of the NBA. In time insurance overtook autos to
become the most active category sponsoring the NBA. Insurance companies are five times more
likely to sponsor professional basketball than the average of all sponsors, according to the research.
Auto and beer are the second and third most active categories.

established as a non–profit entity in 1917 by 26 teams to govern the league. They had been very
successful over the past 75 years with very little exposure. They have thrilled fans and provide
financial returns for their owners. Their primary goal is to take hockey to a next level and makes it
more popular. They are not worried about competition and are only concerned with overall growth
for the sport, the owners, the players and the fans. Due to a recent labour dispute, all the NHL
stakeholders lost a lot of money and this coupled with the need to increase the audience let to a lot

The locations, merchandise, cheerleaders, music, rental tapes, and logos add to the whole hockey
experience making it more than just a sport. COMPANY– NHL has a great product, thrilled fans,
and provide financial returns for their owners. The Stanley Cup was the most popular trophy
awarded for a century to North America's best hockey team. By the 1990's there was a shift from
pure hockey to a hockey experience with a variety of entertainment added to increase the appeal of
the game. To create exposure, new recruitments were also made. NHL's strength lied in its strong
partnerships with firms like NIKE, Coca–Cola and Anheuser–Busch. NHLs' achieved great success
with little exposure so with the right support and exposure they can grow their fan base
considerably. VALUE PROPOSITION Hockey is not a tangible product to increase the popularity of
which they can add or modify some features, hence complicating things a bit. It's a sport, so all they
can work on, to make it more popular among the audience is to make the experience of watching the
game worth–while. The product offered by NHL is great. They have young, good–looking, well–

The teams of the NBA league generated combined NBA revenues of around 5.87 billion U.S. dollars
in the 2015/16. This is the highest figure to–date which was a increase of 690 million dollars from
the previous season ("Total NBA Revenue"). There has been a large increase in revenue in the NBA
in recent years. Revenue throughout the NBA has increased through the success of a team. More
successful teams earn more revenue. Broadcasting is also important for marketing revenue. With
expanding viewership, revenue in the NBA has significantly grown. The salary cap is also another
example of increase in revenue. There are many different reasons why the revenue in the NBA has

This increase in revenue is due to the success of a specific team, marketing, and salary cap. More
successful teams earn more revenue. For example, the Golden State Warriors received nearly double
of that of the Orlando Magic because of their success. Studies have indicated that winning
percentage and the success of your team have a strong positive correlation with attendance. More
attendance means more revenue for the program because more tickets are being sold. Another way
revenue is gained is having a star player or players. The Cleveland Cavaliers have the biggest impact
of revenue by a star player with Lebron James. With James back on the team, the Cavaliers saw their
revenue jump 45% this season. With expanding viewership, revenue in the NBA has significantly
grown. With marketing also comes sponsorships and that's where a good chunk of the Nba's revenue
comes from. The salary cap is also another example of increase in revenue. In professional sports, a

The Nba Player 's Association
Professional sports have been a passing time in our generation and more importantly a business.
Over the years sports have gained millions of viewers and fans. Sports arenas and stadiums seats
have been sold as a result millions of dollars have been made through professional sports. Before
social media and mass media shined light to life as a professional athlete, we were unaware of
exactly what went on behind the curtains between the athletes and the organization that they played
for. Despite the fact that athletes can earn a lot of money at the highest level, they also experience
bad work conditions, dissatisfied with how they are treated, unreasonable pay and benefits, and the
organization not being interested in their well being. According to an article by Andrew Flint, "The
NBA Player's Association was founded in 1954 with Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics as the first
president. It wasn't recognized by the owners until 1964 when the players threatened to boycott the
first televised All–Star Game" (Flint, 2013). The NBA labor union was created because "prior to the
union players in the NBA received no pensions, no healthcare, no pier Diem, no minimum wage,
and an average salary of $8,000" (Flint, 2013). In the NBA specifically unions still exist for the
players that are not superstars that need representation when they are mistreated by the NBA.
"Unionization offers employees a method for countering employers' powers to unilaterally change
employment conditions.

Do We Pay Athletes Too Much?
Do professional athletes get paid too much?
In my personal opinion: No
In this modern era this is an ethical issue that comes up more and more often. This has been brought
up especially in times of economic hardship and the recession whereby families are really struggling
to make ends meet with unemployment, delay of retirement and general reductions in disposable
income. During this paper it shall be discussed how the ethical issue of high wages came about, why
it is an issue, who is affected and what actions can be taken.
Why is there this ethical problem?
To put it simply, it is a matter of personal opinion and knowledge on whether you believe
professional athletes in the United States should get paid the level of wages that they ... Show more

One of the options discussed would be to cut player's salaries. Now this could have profound
consequences for many directly and indirectly involved. Firstly, the quality of sportsman would
diminish. This is a general mental happening that when you reduce a person's reward for something,
more often than not, they will reduce their work ethic consequently. The knock on affect of this
would be that people would then find sports less entertaining which is a social consequence as
people need entertainment. After this it would probably be assumed that this industry that employs
millions of people, the 11th largest industry in business, could start to struggle with the
consequential fall in demand... due to a fall in quality.
People would indirectly be affected as the level of taxation that these athletes would drop and
consequently affect the economy negatively not to mention the reduced spending the economy
would see as they would have less disposable income. This would affect other people through job s
and welfare. For example, if a professional footballer does not buy a boat in Florida then the
company who makes the boat would lose out. Welfare wise, the federal governments would have
less money to put towards benefits to help those less fortunate. Similar to this charities would find
themselves losing out also as the athletes would probably donate less as they would have less wealth
to offer. This would, again, influence people negatively.

Issues with Athletes’ Salaries and How to Change Them
Professional sports were beginning to be organized in the 1850s. At this point, their salaries,
although they were still higher than the average person's, were not too outrageous. In the 1880s and
90s, baseball players in particular were making on average about $1,750 annually. Even though this
was three times the salary of an industrial worker of the time, they were not happy with this amount
of money and felt they should be earning more (Baseball n.d.). In the 1970s, the worlds of
professional sports took a drastic turn. According to an article by J.L. Carnagie, "Two words
described sports in the 1970s: big business. Owners and athletes in major professional team sports

According to a study done by American Demographics magazine in April of 1996, the number of
adults making $20,000 to $29,000 annually who attended sporting events dropped from 11% in
1985 to 8% in 1995. This shows how exclusive sporting events are becoming due to increasing
prices. The attendance rates of people in lower income brackets dropped, while the rates of people in
higher income brackets did not change much (Professional Sports Salaries, n.d.) Lastly, but most
importantly is the affect that athletes' salaries have on children and teenagers. Many people fear that
the illusion given off by the professional sports industry is detrimental to children and teenagers
who are trying to decide what they should do with their lives. Young people read about professional
athletes and hear about them on the news and from people around them all the time. They realize the
kind of money they make and that sounds like a great lifestyle to them. What many kids do not
realize is the very minute chance they have of actually playing a sport professionally. Only about
1% of high school athletes go on to play in college. And from those college athletes only about 1%
go on the play professionally. So the chances of becoming a professional athlete are about 1 in
10,000 or 0.01% for high school athletes and in 1997, 66% of seventh and eighth grade boys
expected to play professional sports as their career (Professional Sports Salaries). Not only do

Let's Not Put A Cap On It
One of the most debatable topics in Major League Baseball (MLB) is whether a salary cap should be
implemented for each team in the league. A salary cap is an agreement between teams that places a
limit on the amount of money that can be spent on player salaries (Britana). Of the three American
major professional sports, football, baseball, and basketball, Major League Baseball is the only one
that does not have a salary cap. There is more competitiveness with baseball than any other sport. As
Demause states, "Depending on whom you ask, a salary cap would save the game, destroy the
players' union, provide hope for small–market fans, pervert the free market, or create a tangle or red

The available resources of the teams would first have to go to salaries; if there is any excess cash,
then they could recruit, build a new stadium, or develop new talent. Many times there would not be
any available cash left after meeting the salary floor, so these essential expenses of baseball would
not be met. Talent evaluation and development is much different in baseball than in other sports.
Baseball has many more available athletics to choose from than professional football and basketball.
The NFL has seven rounds in its draft for rookie players; the NBA only has two. These drafts are
dwarfs in comparison to the Major League Draft which consists of fifty rounds. These fifty rounds
do not even consider the thirty percent of major league baseball players who are from outside of the
United States and Canada (Silver xliv). These players are signed as free agents with the
overwhelming majority coming from Latin America. Each major league team usually has six minor
league teams where they develop talent which is referred to as farm teams. What this means is there
a larger talent pool in baseball from which to select players to help you win games. Baseball more
than any sport, is heavily dependent on player statistics. Advanced analytical methods called
sabermetrics throws away traditional baseball such as the batting average to a more effective way to
assess players and "often used to measure future productivity (Kendrick)." If a smaller

Why Salary Caps Are Truly Unfair
The debates have gone on every sense the very first year free agency was introduced. I think after all
this paper is done I truly believe that I will be able to show you evidence on why salary caps are
truly unfair. So let 's have some facts that prove my theory with facts from their lives. Most coaches
can look at talent and see potential at such a young age. When coaches see this they push Athletes to
the next level making them ready for the college. That's why you see kids pushing themselves so
hard in the gym, they think they can make it to the league. Look at it this way, in all sports except
baseball, the chances of going pro are less than 2%. So why pay these guys what they worked their
whole entire life for get paid, they honestly deserve it. Let's look at it this way, Professional athletes
have worked their entire life for everything they now have. Salary caps are not a problem in sports,
this has been a very heated debate throughout every year in sports. There 's new free agents every
single year, with some of the potential who deserve more than 300 million dollars over the next 10
years. Then there's some who don't even come close to making 1 million on a one year deal. Many
people sit here and could fire rapid shots on why salary caps should be established in sports. While
others believe that this could stop some people of what they should be making. Thats besides the
point, I 100% believe that salary caps should be abolished in pro sports. I have some great

Essay On Nba Players Overpaid
What's more intriguing is the fact that some question whether NBA players are overpaid. Nathan
(22) indicated that overpayment in the NBA is problematic. Statistically some players are overpaid
based on poor or sub–par performance. These players are highly sought after because they are
proficient in one aspect of their game such as three point shooting or they may be a defensive force.
However, these same specialized players may be a major liability in other areas i.e., the three point
shooter may be a poor defender and the defensive force may be a poor free throw shooter. Whatever
the issue, overpayment in the NBA is a concern. The reason for payment is to fairly compensate a
player for his play. However, in the NBA it seems as if compensation is a reward for past
performance and anticipated or expected future performance. However, past performance and
expected performance may not be good indicators of fair compensation. NBA owners and general

problem or dispute between parties, or (2) to create something new that neither party could do on its
own. Negotiating is a critical, every day skill that is essential anytime it is necessary to create short–
term or long–lasting agreements. For example: In 1996, Juwan Howard signed a contract worth over
$100 million with the Miami Heat and nearly became the highest paid NBA player during the
'96–'97 NBA season. However, his contract was voided by the NBA citing that the Heat exceeded its
salary cap. On August 5, 1996 Howard returned to the folds ... Show more content on

As the bidding war continued, Juwan Howard would eventually sign on with the Heat for over 100

Analysis Of The Obstacles Of Becoming A Professional...
The NBA is widely regarded as the pinnacle of professional basketball, where players can compete
against the best of the best and earn top dollar while doing so. Long–term contracts can be seen as a
return on an investment as players need to not only prove themselves to the front office, but also
take the risk of trying to become a professional basketball player. The NBA has two draft rounds
composed of 30 picks, meaning that every year, only 60 draft–eligible prospects are ensured
employment. To even declare for the NBA draft, players need to first sign with a basketball program
at the university/college level in order to develop and catch the eyes of various scouts. Because of
this limited specialized supply of labour, player salaries can

Ticket Prices
The article "Ticket Price Determination in Professional Sports: An Empirical Analysis of the NBA,
NFL, NHL, and Major League Baseball." was researched and created by two economists named,
Patrick Rishe and Michael Mondello. The basis of this article was to analyze why the prices of
tickets tend to vary from city to city within each league and also to provide the reader with
information regarding whether ticket price increases are tied to changes in team payroll. Rishe and
Mondello created and empirical model to get a more precise measurement than that of regressions
done in the past. With this analysis Rishe and Mondello wanted to understand the impacts of salary
caps on ticket price within a league so they involved two leagues without a salary ... Show more

Going forward, one of the most notable findings in this regression is the significance of team payroll
and ticket prices for the NHL. One might expect these two variables to be correlated since there is
no salary cap, but in fact in the early stages of the test period Rishe and Mondello discovered that
the NBA, despite having a salary cap, has a larger payroll dispersion than the NHL. NHL's payroll
dispersion is relatively stable, which could be the reason why this variable is statically insignificant.
Recent success has had more of an impact on the NBA and the NFL compared to the NHL and
MLB. This might be due to the strong correlation between winning and payrolls in cap–free sports.
To conclude the average ticket prices has had a strong upward trend in football and baseball, on the
other hand the NHL and NBA seem stagnate possibly due to consumer preference in the last six
years. The second equation in this trial explains the factors that cause seasonal price changes within
each league. Once again playing in a new facility for a season opener suggests the size of seasonal
price tickets will increase for an individual team in any league. The second factor in this equation is
the team's post season success, the result showed that for a team in any league that made it to the
playoffs significantly raised ticket prices. Additionally, the ticket prices rose for only the NHL and
NFL if a team reached the championship. Over the period of time examined NBA and NHL teams
displayed a smaller ticket price increase seasonally, due to the stagnate demand to watch those two

The plaintiff was "George Earl Toolson was a pitcher with the Newark Bears in 1949, a farm team

Nba Free Agent, Texas And Play For The Golden State Warriors
This past summer Kevin Durant made the bold decision as an NBA free agent to take his talents to
Oakland, California and play for the Golden State Warriors. Durant had played his prior eight years
for the Oklahoma Thunder. During this time playing for the Thunder, Durant has won an NBA Most
Valuable Player Award, four NBA scoring titles, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, and two
Olympic gold medals. He has also been selected to six All–NBA teams and seven All–Star teams.
Durant helped lead Oklahoma City to the 2012 NBA Finals, losing to the Miami Heat in five games.
What is so controversial about his decision to play for Golden State is that this past season when he
was playing for the Thunder in the playoffs, the Thunder blew a 3–1 lead against the Warriors. You
would think that the Warriors would be the last team he would leave the Thunder for, but no. Kevin
obviously saw greater potential in his career to decide on playing for the Golden State Warriors, but
what were the factors that led to his opportunity cost in his decision making. Did Kevin Durant
make a choice that maximizes his utility, and leads to having more success in the NBA? Or one that
will lead to him wanting to move teams again in two years once his contract with Golden State is
done.
Once Kevin Durant's contract ended the entire NBA opened up to him wanting his name on their
roster. To start with the option that so many OKC Thunder fans were hoping to see hold Kevin

Lockouts refer to when owners or management closes their doors to their employees. A strike is
when employees refuse to work. In most cases labor unions are born out of unfair working
conditions and wages were salaries that may be minimal. One might not think of poor working
conditions minimal salary when it comes to the three major sports of professional baseball
professional basketball in the National Football League. You look at athletes like Michael Jordan,

finding anyone feeling sorry for them. When it comes to these perks that today's professional
athletes enjoy is do to those who came before them that had the audacity to challenge the owners.
What is diplomacy, knowing how to deal with people in a particular way to ultimately get what you
want. That's my interpretation of the diplomacy as it pertains to negotiations. In sports one may ask
how negotiations spiral out of control to the point where you get some type of work stoppage by
strike or by lockout. Fans are getting upset and disgruntled and question, it's all about greed

Essay on Escalating Professional Athlete Salaries
Escalating Professional Athlete Salaries

In recent years, with the growing popularity of sports, athletes salaries have escalated like that of a
superb stock equity. Athletes are taking full advantage of their position, causing the average man to
wonder how high will they go. Some feel that athletes are greedy people who have lost care for the
true meaning of their salary, the love of the game.
Others feel that if a person is able to earn that kind of money, why shouldn't they? Increases in
athlete salaries will bring up the question on whether athletes are worth the money by researching

The problem is they want to do that immediately. "In a couple years, after Garnett develops into a

undoubtedly necessary to have rookie salary caps. "If there weren?t those rookie caps, kids out of
college, even high school like KG [Kevin Garnett], would be signing these multi–million dollar
contracts right after the draft. There is no doubt in my mind that that was a good thing to do." He
also feels that these high salaries are good because it shows that revenue is going up (Rosen). Sports
salaries have sky rocketed in the past ten to fifteen years. Professional athletes have moved from six
figure salaries to nine figure salaries in what seems like a snap of a finger. Michael Jordan, for
example, got paid about $35 million a year not counting endorsements. Let?s put that in easier
terms: – $439,000 a game – $12,500 a minute played, assuming he plays about 35 minutes per game
– $209 a second played – almost $40,000 a jumpshot, assuming he makes 11 jumpshots per game
That is a ton of money when one looks at it this way. If one includes the endorsements he gets,
which are from Nike, Gatorade, Hanes, Ballpark hot dogs, Jordan shoes and clothing, Rayovac
Batteries, and Michael Jordan cologne, he makes about one million dollars per game. Now this is a
little too much, even if it is, in fact, Michael Jordan, probably the best basketball

Sports Equality
The nine principles of sports governance each play an important role in the operations of sports
entities, but I believe the two most important policies are Solidarity and Transparency and
Communication. Solidarity, in relation to sports, refers to fair distribution of revenues so that
competitions are not one sided and all teams have the opportunity to recruit talented athletes. The
NFL and NBA do a very good job with solidarity. Both of these leagues have revenue sharing,
which helps improve competitive balance across the league. (Miller) If these two leagues didn't have
revenue sharing and no salary cap, all the best players would drift towards the larger market teams
because they generate more money. (Miller) In the NBA especially, the small market teams wouldn't

However, since the NBA has a salary cap and revenue sharing to make the league fair, each team
can develop their young players and pay them when the time comes. The MLB, on the other hand, is
lacking with respect to solidarity because they have little revenue sharing and no salary cap. The big
market teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers dominate the sport while the small market teams lose
their star players because they cannot match the salaries or generate the same amount of revenue to
keep quality players on the roster. I don't agree with the way the MLB is structured, in big part
because I am a fan of a small market team (Cleveland Indians) and we don't have the type of money
to pay our star players. When comparing the payrolls of the Dodgers and the Indians, it simply isn't
fair. The Dodgers are over $200 million and the Indians are way below $100 million in

Basketball Needs to Be Fixed
Professional and college basketball have become very popular in the hearts and minds of many
Americans. Millions of dollars a year are spent on apparel, tickets, and television all generated by
people's love for basketball.
But in the last couple of years, both the National Basketball Association (NBA) and college
basketball have lost a substantial amount of their competition and have caught much criticizim for it.
At the heart of this problem is a single cause, greed. The game of basketball has become all about
money instead of the game and its fans. This problem needs to be addressed, and the best place to

College basketball markets their teams after their best players, when those players decide to go pro
early, the promotion of college basketball is hurt; along with the overall talent level of the league is
lowered drastically. Games become less interesting because the players are not as talented. This in
turn hurts the television networks because people do not like watching games in which they do not
know who the players are.
And then, that in turn hurts the league and the schools again because the networks will not pay as
much to televise the games as they once did.
The schools and the league are not the only ones hurt, by leaving school early hoping to make the
big bucks the players hurt themselves. In the world that we live in today, if you do not have a
college degree, opportunities are limited. Look at the statistics, 60 players are drafted each year, and
there are only 360 roster spots in the entire NBA. The chances that each player drafted will make the
team is almost an impossibility. Some people go back to school and try to finish their degrees, but
most do not because once you give up your eligibility, you cannot get it back, with means most of
them cannot afford to go back to school. This leaves a lot of people out of work and with no degree.

The Measurement Of Team Success
So what is the measurement of team success in professional sports? Is it number of wins? Is it the
number of division titles or championships? Or is it the number of sellouts or amount of team
revenue? Whatever it may be, the types of players you have on your team is important to reach any
level of success. So how much money should a team spend on their players? Salaries of professional
sports players are way higher that the average person. Lately, salaries of players in the National
Basketball Association are increasing year after year. Even with a salary cap, teams can now spend
more money on highly gifted athletes in hopes to bring division titles and championships to their
respective organizations. So does spending more money on player salaries guarantee a winning
team? Now you could go into free agency, and sign some of the biggest stars in all of basketball and
think to yourself that you will be poised for a shot at a championship that year. However, just
because you pay a top–tier player, it doesn't guarantee that they will stay healthy. There are many
outlying factors to a player's performance. From the research I have found, the results are mixed
regarding the relationship between team salary and performance. If an NBA team spends more
money on player salaries, this does not guarantee a better team performance. In 2013, an article on

The NHL Lockout
The rookie salary cap was gutted when teams took advantage of a loophole, adding lucrative
"bonus" payments on top of the "maximum" base salary. It began in 1997, when the Boston Bruins
gave two rookies, Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov, the maximum salary allowed under the rookie
cap. But those contracts also had bonus clauses that would roughly triple the base salary if certain
criteria – such as statistical benchmarks – were met. From then on, all high draft picks began

This is the deal–killer. The players want no part of any such restriction. The percentage formula is

NBA in particular produces billions of dollars of revenue each year in advertisements, ticket sales,
apparel, and other forms. Through these different forms of revenue, a portion of this money goes to
all 30 teams in the NBA. In the millions of dollars that each team receives, parts of it go to the

side to high NBA salaries is (NBA players are overpaid sissies). This opinion editorial was written

anger and disgust by one person, but the Alicata believes that other fans were also angry. This
particular fan ranted by saying, "It's the most ridiculous thing I've seen in my life...they make so

between players and owners about money are just ridiculous. Most people don't even make millions

Salary caps are meant to keep the league competitive, control cost and increase overall league

According to Lewicki, Barry & Saunders (2010), the major developments of labor–management
relationship within Major League Baseball (MLB) started in the late 1960s and were characterized
by the ongoing disputes between the owners and the players that resulted in the following hard
bargaining agreements, work stoppages and lockouts:
a) 1st and 2nd Basic Agreement – was a contract that 1) significantly increased the minimum salary

However, the clause was challenged in 1976 after two players went to arbitration and won, by a 2 to
1 vote, the right to offer their services to the highest bidder thus killing the reserve clause.
d) 5th Basic Agreement – the MLBPA and the PRC could not agree on how a team that was losing a
free agent could be compensated thus making the players to go on strike prior to the start of the
1980 season. This forced both parties to agree on studying the free–agent compensation issue for a
year after which they would regroup to revisit the issue. In 1981, the players went on strike again
after the two parties failed to agree on the terms of free–agent compensation. This forced the parties
to eventually reach an agreement stipulating that the team that had lost a player would in return
receive a player from the signing team.
e) 6th Basic Agreement – the MLBPA and the PRC would once again butt heads over pension
contribution levels that had been agreed on in the 3rd Basic Agreement and the free–agent
compensation that was agreed on in the 5th Basic Agreement. However, the two parties reached an
agreement within a day to avoid a strike.
f) 7th Basic Agreement – in 1990, the owners tried to institute another lockout because the lack of a
salary cap made it possible for large market teams to attract richer television contracts from local
networks and offer players higher salaries. The owners were proposing a revenue sharing program
that would mandate the

Nhl Lockout
NHL 's lockout
September 16, 2004 the National Hockey League had a labour dispute that led to a lockout. The
dispute was about the end of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The National Football
League has a working salary cap for the teams in their league. NHL is trying to establish the same
type of system that the NFL has. The negotiation between the NHL Players association and the NHL
did not come easy. The disagreements were that NHL clubs spent too much on player 's salary. The
clubs spent over 76 percent of their revenue on the players. With the salary cap the NHL was trying
to instill, players felt that the idea was unfair and inflexible. The players didn 't want to cut their
salaries.
The fact is that the NHL ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Europe 388 NHL players played in Europe because of the lockout. Russia, Sweden, and Czech
Republic all tried and cash in on Americas misfortune not keeping their hockey league. America
doesn 't want another strike like they had because it makes the players look selfish and the NHL
look unstable to outside countries and the public in America.
The Consequences of the lockout the season is increasing popularity in other sports and recreational
activities. NHL lockout is one of the reasons people turn to different ways to spend their time like
Texas hold 'em. The popularity of Texas hold 'em has definitely benefited from the lockout replacing
"stud poker" as the most commonly played card game in the United States. Televised events like
Worlds Championship Poker gained TV ratings due to the helping of the NHL lockout. That is one
of the reasons TV networks like ESPN is not bidding for a new contract with the NHL. Instead they
have to make individual networks that specializes in the NHL i.e. OLN. Canadian sports such as
Canadian Football League has bulster in fan support because they had no hockey to lean on.
Players wanted more favorable salary cap but that will make teams spend over 70 percent of their
revenue income on paying players salary. General counsel Bob Goodnow of the NHLPA was so
unreasonable against the leagues offer of a salary cap that after the lockout was settle he was

Salary Cap History

  • 1. Salary Cap History Executive Summary: In this paper we will examine the history of the salary cap structures in sports focusing mainly on the version that the NFL uses. We will also take a in–depth look at the four different areas that makes up the salary cap (Salary Cap, Active Spending, Dead Money and Cap Space) and impact the cap has had on the players themselves. As well as how it has reshaped the teams and leagues itself to help the NFL to grow into the Multi Billion Dollar sports empire that it was become today. Who would have thought that making the decision to place a limit upon spending and giving everyone the same opportunity for success would have such a profound effect on the growth and popularity of the sport? Introduction: Salary caps have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the start of the 2014 season the Los Angeles Dodgers had the largest payroll at a staggering $235,295,219. On the flipside if we were to look at the bottom of this list the Houston Astros opened the year at $44,544,174 and the Miami Marlins at $47,565,400 or around 20% of the Dodgers payroll. What I found to be even more staggering is the fact that after the Miami Marlins the next lowest payroll was $77,062,891 belonging to the Tampa Bay Rays. So while spending money doesn't always breed success in that four teams in this year's bottom six Oakland, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay made the playoffs in 2013 and only three teams in the top six did. This was an exception to the rule because in 2014 five of the top 10 and seven of the top 15 made the playoffs while only three teams ranked 19th or higher in payroll achieved any kind of success. Proving that while spending large amounts of money does not guarantee success, it definitely doesn't hurt your chances. The other popular belief that I have read is that it helps curb costs so that owners don't have to spend as much out of their own pockets. Which would make sense however the sports franchises in themselves are investments that cost hundreds of millions to even multiple billions of dollars. So the idea they would need to pinch pennies once the initial investment is made doesn't add up or sit well with the fans who find their rooting interests at the bottom end of the financial ... • 2. Timofey Mozgov: The Rise And Fall Of The Los Angeles Lakers The Los Angeles Lakers reached a 4 year deal with Timofey Mozgov worth 64 million dollars just hours after the beginning of the NBA Free Agency. To be honest, most of us were shocked with the deal and Twitter without a doubt proved the basketball world's shock. Mozgov however, maybe will live up to such a large deal and here are the reasons. A year ago, Mozgov was one of the Cavaliers leading scorers and a key figure in the NBA Finals. His presence and dominant rebounding forced Steve Kerr to implement to so familiar Warriors " Death Lineup," with Draymond Green at the center spot. One could argue his rise resulted from the absence of the Cavs' players, but nevertheless Mozgov demonstrated he could ball with the best of them. Mozgov's skills ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Professional Sports The NBA Should Enforce a Hard Salary Cap How many of you sports fans out there are sick of paying twenty–five dollars for a lousy seat at an NBA game? How many of you are sick of seeing the same teams in the finals every year? I'm sure there are thousands of you out there that feel this way, as do I. The way we can fix these problems is to demand that the NBA enforce a hard salary cap. A hard salary cap would lower ticket prices, allow for more teams to be more competitive and eliminate the possibility of any future lockouts. If the three things listed above aren't met, it's hard to say if the NBA will survive at all. I want to see the NBA survive, but not in the way things are being run now. A hard salary cap is the only way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ( 1 ) The players realize that they are eliminating their average fan and they don't care. We as fans should not pay these outlandish ticket prices. A hard salary cap is the only thing that will lower salaries and ticket prices. If ticket prices aren't lowered, I personally feel that the players can kiss their pay checks goodbye. But what do other people think. Some people believe that NBA arenas will fill up in spite of high ticket prices. Just last year Michael Jordan made 33.14 million dollars while the whole Chicago Bulls salary cap was 26.9 million, and all season long seats were filled. That means to some that no matter the amount, people will continue to attend NBA games. To the people that believe this, I must remind them of Major League Baseball and the situation that they faced just a few years back. First, players' salaries skyrocketed to obscene levels, alienating their average fan. Next, the players couldn't decide how to divide up their millions. Finally, they quit playing the game and their fans quit caring about Major League Baseball. Does any of this sound familiar? This is exactly what's happening in the NBA right now. If it happened to the American Pastime it can, and certainly will, happen to the NBA. Yet people, in spite of the lower ticket prices provided by a hard salary cap, aren't convinced that a hard salary cap is a good idea. They feel that players ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Social And Economic Impacts Of The Industrial Revolution Introduction In response to the drastic social and economic impacts of the industrial revolution in the United States during the mid 19th century, labor union were created in order to facilitate fair negotiations on the behalf of workers with their employers in regard to work–related difficulties such as pay, working conditions, along with other amenities. Article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 following the end of the Second World War identifies the ability to organize trade unions as a fundamental human right. On a more federal level, the United States Congress also began passing laws targeted at industries to better working conditions as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Team owners gave the NBPA recognition in 1957; however, due to a lack of interest from the players and a lack general organization, the NBPA was not taken seriously by anyone, and as a result did not accomplish anything. This all began to change in the 1960's and 70's, as the dynamic combination of growing fan interest and the emergence of network television transformed sports leagues and individual teams into valuable business enterprises. Naturally, the players wanted a greater share of the expanding wealth; to do so, they had to do it the same ways blue–collar industrial workers did: through collective bargaining with the help of labor unions, or in this case, the National Basketball Players Association. Previously dysfunctional and inconsequential, the NBPA turned to Harvard Law graduate Lawrence 'Larry' Fleisher, an attorney and sports agent. Hired on as a general counsel in 1962, Fleisher negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement in all of professional sports in 1967, securing pensions, minimum salaries, and disability pay for its members. Over the years, the NBPA grew in power as the NBA grew in popularity. With new massive network television deals, apparel contracts, advertisement air times, ticket sales, concessions, to name a few sources of the teams' revenue, how to divide the Association's basketball–related income (BRI) has remained a central topic of debate between players and owners. • 5. The Negative Effects Of The NBA Salary Cap In one of the most profitable industries in America, the National Basketball Association has increased in popularity and in revenue since their incorporation. With these growths, stardom and income have increased exponentially for the players. As the value of the players have risen, the salary cap has followed. Although the salary cap has risen, star players continue to feel like they are worth more on the free market than they are being paid. LeBron James, for example, is invaluable to the NBA's bottom line. Yet, because of the salary cap, he gets paid around the same as Grizzly's guard Mike Conley who is not considered a top–five point guard in the NBA. Although the NBA salary cap is in–place to promote competitive balance between the large and small clubs, the result is talent rich teams can keep getting richer because of low relative maximum player contracts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the NBA was to follow Major League Baseball's path and not have a salary cap, we would see super teams forming left and right. Baseball is a bad model to follow for the NBA because of the importance of the players. In the MLB, since there are more players per team, their impact on the game is less than LeBron James' impact. Per Spotrac's payroll tracker, there were three teams in the MLB who were below league average in payroll and still made the playoffs. In the NBA there are currently eight teams below average salary who are in playoff contention. As players are more valuable to teams in the NBA, the salary cap is more important to talent distribution. As there are benefits to the current salary cap, as it "protects veteran players" (Surowiecki) and "rookies and prospects"(Engler), the current structure has its benefits and detriments. All 4 major professional sports leagues in the United States have a salary cap installed into their collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players. Those four major sports are, the NFL, the NBA, the MLB and the NHL. A salary cap is defined as s an agreement or rule that places a limit on the amount of money that a team can spend on players' salaries. It can be as a per–player limit or a total limit for the team's roster. It is basically put in place to help the small market teams stay competitive. • 7. The Impact Of Sports On Women's Sports Traditionally men have dominated the world of sports however in recent year's women's sports have become popular and with their new found popularity, women's sports have evolved into marketable leagues of their own. Although women's sports took a huge leap forward, women players still don't receive the same financial compensation for playing the same sports in the same arenas as their male counterparts. In Purse Snatching by Donna Lopiano, she points out sexism may have a huge effect on this financial discrepancy between women and men athletes. Analyzing sports economics may point to a different reason why women are receiving such a compensation disparity. Women sports have come a long way, since the days when women were only allowed to watch. "The past three decades have witnessed a steady growth in women 's sports programs in America along with a remarkable increase in the number of women athletes (Daniel Frankl 2)" From an early age women were thought to be "Lady Like"; they are told not to get all sweaty and dirty. Over 200 years later since Maud Watson stepped on the tennis courts of Wimbledon (Sports Media digest 3); women now compete in all types and levels of sports from softball to National racing. Soccer fans saw Mia Hamm become the face of Women's soccer around the world , Venus and Serena Williams are two of the most popular figures in tennis, and Indy car racing had their first woman racer, Danika Patrick. • 8. Professional Sports NBA Players are Greedy How many of us would love to make $2.4 million a year? Or even better, how does $126 million over a six–year period sound? Then again, why stop there? As John Donovan, a sports analyst for Sports Illustrated and CNN points out, with the average salary of players in the NBA at $2.4 million a year, and some players with contracts well over $100 million, it's hard to see what many of them are complaining about. Players in the NBA need to stop being so greedy, agree to a drug policy and realize that they are employed by the owners and should follow all rules and regulations set by the league. Even though the NBA is a multi–billion dollar industry, it does not mean that the owners should have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many players might say that it is the leagues and owners fault for some of the outrageous salaries being paid, but when the league tries to control the problem, the players are against any of the suggestions they have. The current salary cap, called a "soft cap", lets teams spend $27 million a year on player salaries (Donovan, John "NBA"). The problem is that under current rules, there are too many loopholes a team can use to go well over the limit. One of these loopholes is the Larry Bird exception that grants teams the ability to resign veteran players without it counting towards the salary cap. This is why teams like the Chicago Bulls can pay Michael Jordan ($33 million last year) more than 17 teams pay all of their players combined. The rule was originally designed so that a team could keep important veteran players and still have money to sign new ones. This rule has now been misused so much that teams are paying players $100 million plus over a 4–6 year period and say they are just using the Larry Bird rule. Team misuse of rules has made it so large teams are making it harder and harder for small teams to stay competitive. Loren Jorgensen, a sports writer for the Utah paper Deseret News, states that big market teams like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles can pay players enormous amounts that make it impossible for the small market teams to hold ... • 9. The Nba Makes A Profit The NBA makes a profit in many ways, for example the NBA makes millions of dollars off of sponsorships, television contracts and selling merchandise. The National Basketball Association recently signed a new TV agreement with TNT and ESPN to approximately make $2.6 billion per season. Even with a total of 400 or so odd active players making an average of close to $5 million annually, national TV contracts generate enough revenue to cover salaries and then some. This graph depicts league revenue of the National Basketball Association from the 2001/02 season to the 2014/15 season (Statistica, 2016). Sports arenas and stadiums seats have been sold as a result millions of dollars have been made through professional sports. Before social media and mass media shined light to life as a professional athlete, we were unaware of exactly what went on behind the curtains between the athletes and the organization that they played for. Despite the fact that athletes can earn a lot of money at the highest level, they also experience bad work conditions, dissatisfied with how they are treated, unreasonable pay and benefits, and the organization not being interested in their well being. According to an article by Andrew Flint, "The NBA Player's Association was founded in 1954 with Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics as the first president. It wasn't recognized by the owners until 1964 when the players threatened to boycott the first televised All–Star Game" (Flint, 2013). The NBA labor union was created because "prior to the union players in the NBA received no pensions, no healthcare, no pier Diem, no minimum wage, and an average salary of $8,000" (Flint, 2013). This has been brought up especially in times of economic hardship and the recession whereby families are really struggling to make ends meet with unemployment, delay of retirement and general reductions in disposable income. During this paper it shall be discussed how the ethical issue of high wages came about, why it is an issue, who is affected and what actions can be taken. Why is there this ethical problem? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the options discussed would be to cut player's salaries. Now this could have profound consequences for many directly and indirectly involved. Firstly, the quality of sportsman would diminish. This is a general mental happening that when you reduce a person's reward for something, more often than not, they will reduce their work ethic consequently. The knock on affect of this would be that people would then find sports less entertaining which is a social consequence as people need entertainment. After this it would probably be assumed that this industry that employs millions of people, the 11th largest industry in business, could start to struggle with the consequential fall in demand... due to a fall in quality. People would indirectly be affected as the level of taxation that these athletes would drop and consequently affect the economy negatively not to mention the reduced spending the economy would see as they would have less disposable income. This would affect other people through job s and welfare. For example, if a professional footballer does not buy a boat in Florida then the company who makes the boat would lose out. Welfare wise, the federal governments would have less money to put towards benefits to help those less fortunate. • 14. Issues with Athletes’ Salaries and How to Change Them Professional sports were beginning to be organized in the 1850s. At this point, their salaries, although they were still higher than the average person's, were not too outrageous. In the 1880s and 90s, baseball players in particular were making on average about $1,750 annually. Even though this was three times the salary of an industrial worker of the time, they were not happy with this amount of money and felt they should be earning more (Baseball n.d.). In the 1970s, the worlds of professional sports took a drastic turn. According to an article by J.L. Carnagie, "Two words described sports in the 1970s: big business. This shows how exclusive sporting events are becoming due to increasing prices. The attendance rates of people in lower income brackets dropped, while the rates of people in higher income brackets did not change much (Professional Sports Salaries, n.d.) Lastly, but most importantly is the affect that athletes' salaries have on children and teenagers. Many people fear that the illusion given off by the professional sports industry is detrimental to children and teenagers who are trying to decide what they should do with their lives. Young people read about professional athletes and hear about them on the news and from people around them all the time. They realize the kind of money they make and that sounds like a great lifestyle to them. What many kids do not realize is the very minute chance they have of actually playing a sport professionally. A salary cap is an agreement between teams that places a limit on the amount of money that can be spent on player salaries (Britana). Of the three American major professional sports, football, baseball, and basketball, Major League Baseball is the only one that does not have a salary cap. There is more competitiveness with baseball than any other sport. The available resources of the teams would first have to go to salaries; if there is any excess cash, then they could recruit, build a new stadium, or develop new talent. Many times there would not be any available cash left after meeting the salary floor, so these essential expenses of baseball would not be met. Talent evaluation and development is much different in baseball than in other sports. Baseball has many more available athletics to choose from than professional football and basketball. The NFL has seven rounds in its draft for rookie players; the NBA only has two. These drafts are dwarfs in comparison to the Major League Draft which consists of fifty rounds. These fifty rounds do not even consider the thirty percent of major league baseball players who are from outside of the United States and Canada (Silver xliv). These players are signed as free agents with the overwhelming majority coming from Latin America. Each major league team usually has six minor league teams where they develop talent which is referred to as farm teams. What this means is there a larger talent pool in baseball from which to select players to help you win games. Baseball more than any sport, is heavily dependent on player statistics. I think after all this paper is done I truly believe that I will be able to show you evidence on why salary caps are truly unfair. So let 's have some facts that prove my theory with facts from their lives. Most coaches can look at talent and see potential at such a young age. When coaches see this they push Athletes to the next level making them ready for the college. That's why you see kids pushing themselves so hard in the gym, they think they can make it to the league. Look at it this way, in all sports except baseball, the chances of going pro are less than 2%. So why pay these guys what they worked their whole entire life for get paid, they honestly deserve it. Let's look at it this way, Professional athletes have worked their entire life for everything they now have. Salary caps are not a problem in sports, this has been a very heated debate throughout every year in sports. There 's new free agents every single year, with some of the potential who deserve more than 300 million dollars over the next 10 years. Then there's some who don't even come close to making 1 million on a one year deal. Many people sit here and could fire rapid shots on why salary caps should be established in sports. Statistically some players are overpaid based on poor or sub–par performance. These players are highly sought after because they are proficient in one aspect of their game such as three point shooting or they may be a defensive force. However, these same specialized players may be a major liability in other areas i.e., the three point shooter may be a poor defender and the defensive force may be a poor free throw shooter. Whatever the issue, overpayment in the NBA is a concern. The reason for payment is to fairly compensate a player for his play. However, in the NBA it seems as if compensation is a reward for past performance and anticipated or expected future performance. One might expect these two variables to be correlated since there is no salary cap, but in fact in the early stages of the test period Rishe and Mondello discovered that the NBA, despite having a salary cap, has a larger payroll dispersion than the NHL. NHL's payroll dispersion is relatively stable, which could be the reason why this variable is statically insignificant. Recent success has had more of an impact on the NBA and the NFL compared to the NHL and MLB. This might be due to the strong correlation between winning and payrolls in cap–free sports. To conclude the average ticket prices has had a strong upward trend in football and baseball, on the other hand the NHL and NBA seem stagnate possibly due to consumer preference in the last six years. The second equation in this trial explains the factors that cause seasonal price changes within each league. Or is it the number of sellouts or amount of team revenue? Whatever it may be, the types of players you have on your team is important to reach any level of success. So how much money should a team spend on their players? Salaries of professional sports players are way higher that the average person. But those contracts also had bonus clauses that would roughly triple the base salary if certain criteria – such as statistical benchmarks – were met. From then on, all high draft picks began demanding and receiving similar contracts. Previously the players received 57 percent of the NBA's basketball–related income, but players wanted more. Salary caps are meant to keep the league competitive, control cost and increase overall league revenues.
