Edward Gein Research Paper
Edward Gein was born in August 27, 1906 in La Crosse. He is the son of a timid alcoholic father
and a fanatically religious mother. Gein grew up alongside his older brother Henry, in a household
ruled by his mother's puritanical preaching about sins of lust and carnal desires. His father, George
Philip Gein, died from a heart attack caused by alcoholism on April 1, 1940. After his father's death,
Henry and Edward started to odd jobs in order to cover living expenses; Both considered handymen,
however, Edward considered babysitting the most. On May 16, 1944, Edward and his brother were
both burning away marsh vegetation on the property, but fire started to go out of control which drew
the attention of the fire department. By the end of the day, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Upon looking around the rest of the house, the police found whole human bones and fragments. Part
of Edward Gein's "art" collection included a wastebasket and chair seats composed of human flesh,
skulls on bedposts, a corset constructed with a female torso skinned from shoulders to waist,
leggings made from human leg skin, and masks created from the skin of female heads. On
November 21, 1957, Gein was arraigned on one count of first–degree murder in Waushara County
Court, where he pled not guilty by reason of insanity. Found mentally incompetent and thus unfit for
trial, Gein was sent to a central state hospital that was strictly housed for the criminally insane. In
1968, doctors determined Gein was mentally able to confer with counsel and participate in his
defense. On November 14, 1968, Gein was found guilty of first–degree murder by Judge Robert H.
Gollmar. Soon, a second trial dealt with Gein's sanity. After testimony by doctors for the prosecution
and defense, Gollmar ruled Gein "not guilty by reason of insanity" and ordered him to the Central
State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Gein spent the rest of his life in a mental

The Psychological Situation For A Criminal
"People with mental health problems are almost never dangerous. In fact, they are more likely to be
the victims than the perpetrators. At the same time, mental illness has been the common
denominator in one act of mass violence after another" (Blunt). Those under some sort of mental
illness often commit their crimes under the influence of that illness and are not aware of what they
are doing. There are cases in which they do not receive the proper health during sentencing and
affects them in the long run, or they have been imprisoned and let out without being provided with
the proper help. This ends with them committing acts that are worse than what they committed
before. The psychological situation for a criminal is an essential component ... Show more content

In spring of 2001, Yates is admitted twice to Devereux Texas Treatment Network for the treatment
of her mental illness, in which she was prescribed with strong anti–psychotic medications, including
Haldol. On June 4, 2001, Yates was discontinued her prescription of Haldol by psychiatrist
Mohammed Saeed. On June 20, 2001, not even a month later of the discontinuing of her
prescription of Haldol, Andrea drowns her five children, one by one in the bath tub at their home in
Clear Lake, Texas. June 30, 2001, Andrea Yates is indicted on two counts of capital murder and
pleads not guilty by reason of insanity. Her trial began the following year on February 18. In the
month of March, "during the trial, the prosecution's expert witness, psychiatrist Park Dietz, testifies
that Yates got the idea to drown her children from an episode of "Law & Order," However, the
show's producers later state that no such episode ever aired" (CNN, 2015). On March 12 of 2002,
Yates is convicted of two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Noah, John, and Mary. She was
not tried for the deaths of Paul and Luke, and was later sentenced to life in prison. October of 2003,
Yates was placed on suicide watch after she refused to eat, and on April 30 of 2004, Yates' attorney

Forensic Pathology: Ed Gein, A Serial Killer
Forensic pathology
Ed Gein Case Study
Ed Gein was a serial killer, he inspired the creation of different films as the characters, such as in the
movies Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He also went to
cemeteries and dug up dead female corpses. In 1954, Ed Gein turned from grave robbing to murder.
Police implicated him in the murders of two women in 1957. While the investigations, police
learned that he had practiced necrophilia and experimented with human taxidermy. Gein pleaded not
guilty. He was unfit to stand trial and committed to a mental hospital for criminals. Ten years later,

Edward Gein murders his last victim, Bernice Worden of Plainfield, Wisconsin. On November 16,
Gein robbed Worden at the local hardware store she owned and killed her. Worden's son found his
mother's body and became suspicious of Gein. When authorities searched Gein's farmhouse, they
found weird things such as organs that were in the refrigerator and a heart sat on the stove. Gein had
kept organs from grave digging and murders for decoration. He had also used human skin to make
chairs. Though it is believed that he killed others during this time, Gein only admitted to the
murders of Worden and Hogan.
These murders happened in Wisconsin, United States. On November 16, 1957, is when Plainfield
hardware store owner Bernice Worden disappeared. Upon searching Gein's property, investigators
discovered Worden's decapitated body in a shed, hung upside down by ropes at her wrists, with a
crossbar at her ankles. The torso was dressed like a deer. She had been shot with a .22–caliber rifle.
Charged with first degree murder but has confessed to killing a second women and mutilating dead
bodies. He would steal bodies from the graves at night and carve and mutilate them to make
paraphernalia and the people he murdered were also disfigured in the same way because he had the
weird desire to become a women by wearing the skin of dead

Characteristics And Characteristics Of A Personality Disorder
Over the years, throughout history until the present day, we have encountered various criminals
from lavish thieves, financial swindlers, rapists, terrorists and serial murderers. Most of them all
have something in common, they suffer from psychopathy or some form of mental illness or
disorder. Our textbook states the "the term psychopathy "refers to a very specific and distinctive
type of psychopathology"–a personality disorder characterized by antisocial behavior and a lack of
feelings, especially empathy for or sensitivity to others .
There are some biological characteristics such as traumatic events or abuse that turn in to psychiatric
issues or defects to a person's body that can cause criminal activity. These are some of the ... Show

Their relationship was abusive and Aileen was also an alcoholic. That is when she began killing;
distracting men, robbing them and then killing them. Aileen Wuornos was finally arrested on
January 9th, 1991. She left her fingerprints in a victim's car; that is how she was caught. She killed
seven Florida men over a year time span.
Ted Bundy, whose birth name is Theodore Robert Cowell. Bundy is known as one of the most
prolific serial killers in United States history. He was born in Vermont in 1946 to a single mother.
Later, he and his mother moved in with her grandparents, but Bundy was under the impression his
mother was his sister and his grandparents were his parents. He did attend college and a few friends
but he later dropped out of school due to depression. Ted Bundy went back to school where he
earned a bachelor's in psychology. The strain of learning that his sister is really his mother and his
parents are his grandparents changed something in Ted Bundy's mind. In the 1970s, many women
began to disappear from college campuses from various states. He lured these women by appearing
to be hurt, he raped them, bit them and bludgeoned these women over the head. His victims' remains
were eventually found in a wooded area. Ted Bundy was captured in the 1980s, broke out of prison
several times and ultimately confessed to killing over 30 plus women. He was executed on 24
January, 1989 at the age of 42.

Who Is Edward Gein
Ed Gein Spenser Wiles Born: August 27, 1906 Death: July 26, 1984 Edward Theodore Gein was
born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin in 1906. The second son of George Philip and Augusta
Wilhelmine Gein. Augusta despised her husband, an alcoholic who was unable to keep a job. He
worked various times as a carpenter and an insurance salesman. Augusta owned a local grocery shop
and later sold it in 1914 for a farm to live in isolation near Plainfield, Wisconsin, which was there
permanent home. Augusta took advantage of the isolation by turning away outsiders from getting
close to her sons. Edward only left the farm to attend school. Outside of school, he spent most of his
time doing chores on the farm. Edward was shy, and classmates and teachers remembered him as
having strange mannerisms, such as random laughter. He tried to make friends but his mother would
punish him whenever he tried. Lacking Social development, he did fairly well in school, particularly
reading class. Later in 1940 his father died from a heart failure caused by his alcoholism on April 1,
at age 66. Ed and his brother Henry began doing odd around town to help pay living expenses. The
brothers were reliable and honest by the community. Henry later began dating a divorced, single
mother of two and he planned on moving in with them. Henry spoke very little about her around
Edward who responded with shock and hurt. On May 16, 1944, Henry and Ed were burning away

Thematic Symbols In The Film 'Silence Of The Lambs'
One of the most successful horror films of all time, Silence of the Lambs has always been something
of a mystery. Themes of government sponsored brainwashing in the creation of serial killers are so
expertly hidden in plain sight. It is for this reason that Silence of the Lambs may be considered one
of the most rebellious and thrilling movies ever made. Perhaps the first image people encountered,
when the movie premiered in 1991, was the poster. It shows Jodie Foster's face with a moth
covering her mouth. Her eyes, usually blue, are red. Close examination of the faux skull markings
on the moth's head, reveals the skull to be made up of seven naked women. The moth and its cousin
the butterfly are probably the most important thematic symbols ... Show more content on

Ed Gein began robbing graves–keeping body parts as trophies, practicing necrophilia, and
experimenting with human taxidermy. Gein took the women's bodies back to his farm, peeled off
their faces and preserved the skin by putting oil on them. Gein would wear the faces and stare at
himself, dressing up with wigs jewelry and fake breasts. He then turned to murder, killing at least
two women in 1957. Gein inspired film characters Norman Bates (Psycho), James Gumb (The
Silence of the Lambs) and Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre).
It would be very convenient to be able to attribute all the horrible things that Hannibal does to the
fact that he's a sick psychopath with no redeeming features whatsoever. And for the most part, this is
the picture painted by the surface narrative. One look through the bullet proof glass, however,
reveals this to be another rather clever piece of staging.
At Crawford's first mention of the word Hannibal, Clarice automatically recites, what is now one of
the most recognizable catch–phrases of the film 'Hannibal the Cannibal.' We find out quite early on
that Hannibal eats his victims or his 'evidence' so there's an obvious explanation for his moniker. It
could be argued that Harris was indeed taking a metaphorical swipe at programs like MK Ultra that
seek to use trauma to control a civilian person's mind so they can be used to commit further

Horror And Suspense In Alfred Hitchcock's Film Psycho
In the film Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock he used several shots and symbolism to get across
the theme of horror and suspense. This is particularly apparent in the parlor scene, which has a very
important role of developing the characters and showing the audience how the characters feel and
how they act.
When Marion and Norman are sitting in the parlour engaging in conversation, Hitchcock uses a
slightly upwards facing shot on Norman, showing he is slightly sinister and aggressive, yet he is
sitting in a relaxed and calming manner, showing he is split in personality. In this scene this is
shown in another way by the lighting over Norman's face, half of his face are in the shadows while
the other in the light, showing the positive and negative sides in Norman's personality, this is shown
later in the film when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Norman starts talking about his mother Hitchcock uses an upwards facing shot to show
aggression and power in Norman and as Norman leans forward in a somewhat menacing way a
stuffed owl is shown in the background, in an aggressive stance about to attack that of a small
mammal or bird. While around Marion there are small dainty birds showing that Marion isn't as
strong and independent as she thinks, as she soon has a change of heart about stealing the large sum
of money from her boss. When talking about his mother Norman uses the dialogue "why she's as
harmless as one of those stuffed birds" which is foreshadowing the future event of finding out that
Norman preserved and kept his mother much like does with the birds after all his "hobby is stuffing
things, you know? taxidermy." This is very similar to that of what Ed Gein did, after his mother died
he began to create a woman suit so that he could become his mother, while Norman merely dressed

Edward Theodore Gein
Edward Theodore Gein (1906–1984), known as The Butcher of Plainfield, was an American serial
killer guilty of the murder of at least two women between 1947 and 1957.
Ed Gein was such a controversial and disturbing figure that his story inspired a lot of plots for
thriller movies and books, such as the character of Norman Bates in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock
and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, a novel by Thomas Harris.
The life of Ed Gein was significantly marked by several factors: he spent his childhood with George,
an alcoholic and absent father, and Augusta, an overprotective and extremely religious mother,
obsessed by the idea that the world was populated by impure and sinful people. Ed had to face his
father's and brother's death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of attachment involves an affectional bond that infants need to form with a
differentiated and preferred individual that becomes an attachment figure, consisting in a sustained
nurturing relationship with the sensitive caregiver (Bowlbly, 1979). Attachment is conceptualized as
an evolutionary feature: individuals can create a secure base around which one is able to explore and
gain independence as well as a safe haven to which individuals can return and be reassured in a
situation of distress or danger (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Bowlby, 1969).
On the contrary, unresponsive or atypical ways of parenting can lead to aberrant behaviours or, if
others risk factors are present, to psychopathology (Jacobsen, Edelstein, Hoffman, 1994; Schaffer,
1996). Secure attachment with the primary caregiver is necessary for social and emotional
regulation as well as cognitive and resilience abilities(Bowlby, 1982; Ainsworth & Bell,1970);
insecure attachment affects individuals' life in many aspects, especially the ability to face distress
(Macbeth et al., 2011), and not too rarely the aftermaths of an insane attachment can culminate in
personality disorders (Crawford et al.,

Psycho Movie Analysis
The movie that I chose to do my movie review over is Psycho. In this movie a young woman,
Marion, is having a sexual relationship with this man that she does not know is married to another
woman. Marion works for a company doing the financial needs, and one day she is given a suitcase
that is she is suppose to take to the bank for her boss. She ends up stealing the money, leaving town
and booking her way to see her lover. A few incidences happen to her while she makes her way to
her man, but it is when she gets to the Bates Motel that things start to get psychology weird. When
she reaches the hotel there is a man there by the name of Norman Bates. Norman is not normal at
all, he is struggling from a multiperson disorder and inability to know wrong and right. He tells the
Marion that his mother is alive and living in the house but really she is dead, he had killed her
previously. He goes into details to Marion about his relationship with his dead mother. Marion, is
very intrigued and happy to hear what Norman has to say about his and his mother relationship, but
tells Norman she needs to get herself ready for the man she had come to see. As Marion organizes
herself and makes her way to the shower, Norman is in the hotel office, through a hole in the wall
behind a hanging picture, watching her get undressed. He watches for a solid five minutes before the
scene changes to him running at the shower curtain swinging a knife and killing Marion. During this
part of the movie, you

Edward Gein Social Control Theory
"She's not missing, she's at the farm right now." This haunting quote comes from the mouth of one
of the most grotesque and brutal serial killers to ever live, Edward Gein. Edward was born on
August 27th 1906 to an abusive alcoholic father, George Gein and an overly religious mother,
Augusta Carter. Along with Edward, George and Augusta gave birth to Edwards older brother Henry
in 1902. The family settled down in the little town of Lacrosse, Wisconsin where Augusta raised the
young boys. For the most part, her husband George was left out of the picture mainly because
Augusta believed he was a worthless alcoholic. This paper will discuss the connection between
Edward's crimes and social control theory in order to arrive at a conclusion as to why Gein
committed the brutal murders he did. Before we dive into Gein's criminal history and early life we
need to understand why social control theories differ from most other criminological theories. Social
control theories tend to dive deeper into the realm of "Why didn't someone offend" opposed to "why
did someone offend." Most criminological theories seek to explain how the need to conform to
society affects criminal development ,but social control theories center around the idea that there are
multiple outside factors that encourage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Perfume Character Analysis
Patrick Süskind's seminal 1985 novel, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, achieves that rare feat of
creating a main character that portrays a protagonist that lacks conventional heroic qualities or in
other literature term, an anti–hero. The novel discusses the main character Grenouille, who became
an infamous criminal who lived in the unhygienic and uprising rebellion in Paris, France, 18th
century. He had experienced life chiefly through his highly developed sense of smell. Süskind's did
a marvelous job in portraying personality traits that can be attributed and recognized to an actual
serial killer. Moreover, he has been more in–depth within Grenouille's personality by adding

Born into an era where religion was a major importance to the people and an essence of life.
Without any logical or spiritual reasoning, it would lead them to the idea that the person or object

unidentified and abominable. This led him the absence of someone to guide him and comprehending
the difference between what is considered morally right or wrong. On a contrary, unlike Grenouille,
Ed Gein isolation was due to the fault of parental guidance. Gein lived a repressive and solitary life
on his family homestead with a weak brother, violent unemployed alcoholic father, and domineering
mother. His mother, moved into a desolate location to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons.
("Ed Gein: Real American Psycho." Ed Gein: Real American Psycho.) Gein only left the premises to

one eye and an effeminate demeanor, the young Gein became a target for bullies. His mother made a
habit of punishing her boys for even trying to make friends. Despite receiving a substantial amount
of abuse from his mother, Gein was obsessed with pleasing her. His mother, a devoted and fanatical
Lutheran, drummed into her boys the innate immorality of the world, the evil of drink and the belief
that all women (herself excluded) were prostitutes and lewd. When

The Classical Utilitarianism Line Combined With Rational...
There are some questions in this life we will ask and never receive an answer to. Not because the
questioned simply does not want to answer but perhaps because they cannot answer. This theory
falls into the classical utilitarianism line combined with rational choice theory (Barkan p. 93). In
researching Edward Theodore Gein, I discovered this is one of those cases where "Why" never came
to pass and he took to his own grave those unanswered questions. Did these acts of crime and
necrophilia arise from the clear dysfunctional home life and upbringing or was Ed Gein simply a
psychopath?

One must ask how much hereditary influence from his mother was a factor in Geins' rational choice
theory. Nature versus the lack of nurture in the upbringing of Ed Gein and his brother. "Nonetheless,
offenders still make decisions that appear rational to them at the time they make them (Barkan, p.
96)."
Theory Analysis
Ed Gein deeply desired to please his mother above all else. Augusta Gein an archaic Lutheran
controlled her sons to the extreme. Ed did attend public school however he was an outcast and often
bullied by other students. Despite the mistreatment, he managed to do well in and enjoyed school.
When Ed tried to socialize at school this did not please his mother and anytime Ed tried to make
friends, his mother scolded him. The isolation from any other outside influences could not have been
healthy and added to his insecurities in an everyday social lifestyle. Gein was often described as a
loner, awkward and aloof. Augusta read to both her sons daily from the Old Testament Bible from
scripture usually graphic in nature with versus dealing with death, murder and divine retribution.
Gein tried to make his mother happy but his efforts were usually met with harsh criticism and she
was rarely pleased with her sons. She often scolded them and verbally abused them by telling them
they were going to end up disappointments like their father (Woods, 1995).

The Obsatment Theory Of Edward Gein
Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27th, 1906 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to an alcoholic
father and an extremely religious mother who taught him that sex was a sinful act an early age and
preached her religious teachings to both Ed and his brother. By 1915 Gein's mother had decided to
move the family to a farm in Plainfield Wisconsin and only let him go out in order to go to school.
Due to this, the main influence in his life was his mother. Once his mother died in 1945 Gein's
obsessive attachment to her and her teachings would end up making him one of the most heinous
and notorious killers in American history. This essay will show how the attachment theory is
applicable in Ed Gein's case. More specifically, how Gein's attachment to his mother and how her
death ultimately proved to be deadly. Gein's most influential childhood influence was his mother
Augusta who was a very strict and religious woman. Augusta despised her husband who was an
alcoholic and wanted to raise her children in a religious environment in order to keep them away
from a life of sin. Gein's father was unable to keep a steady job and finally decided to move to a
farm isolated from urbanization. ( A&E Television Network, 2017) Gein's father would both
verbally and physically abuse him and his brother Henry as a result of alcoholism. Although his
mother would also verbally abuse him Gein idolized her. His mother used the opportunity the farm
presented in order to turn away anyone who she thought

Serial Killer Research Paper
A serial killer is defined as a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent
motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavioral pattern. Research has found
numerous key characteristics typically associated with serial killers. According to Hickey's 1997
database of approximately 399 serial killers, the average age of the murderer at the time of the first
killing was 27.5 years and were typically white males. More research found that 4% of the research

blue–collar jobs. Robert Ressler, Ann Burgess and John Douglas, members of the FBI, interviewed

My Killer Ed Gein
My killer was Ed Gein full name Edward Theodore Gein. Ed was born in La Crosse County,
Wisconsin, WI; his date of birth is August 27, 1906. He died in July 26, 1984; this would make him
78 years old.
Gein's life growing up was rather in solitude away from people with only his mother and brother for
company. Augusta was Ed's mother and since her marriage was not working she saved money from
the profits of her grocery store, she bought a farm a little ways from the town so the boys wouldn't
be "influenced" by anyone other than herself. The boys didn't interact with anyone other than school
even then they kept to themselves since they were socially awkward. Augusta discouraged them
from making friends, so that is why they were not socially developed or adaptive. Teachers often
noticed in class that Ed would laugh at random for some odd reason; but since he was this way it
made him a target for bullies. Nothing the boys did ever pleased their mother even though Ed
excelled academically.
Their mother thought they were going to be failures just like their father. The reason his mother
thought her husband a failure is because he was an alcoholic. She was also verbally abusive toward
her children. She read them sections of the bible at certain times each day, mostly after chores or

of a woman was rolled up on the floor. There was a belt fashioned from carved–off nipples, a chair
upholstered in human skin, the crown of a skull used as a soup–bowl, lampshades covered in flesh, a
table propped up by a human shinbones, and a refrigerator full of human organs. The four posts on
Gein's bed were topped with skulls and a human head hung on the wall alongside the nine skinned
faces of women, and decorative bracelets made out of human skin. The stunned searchers also
uncovered a soup bowls fashioned from skulls, a shoebox full of female genitalia, faces stuffed with
newspapers and mounted like hunting trophies on the walls, and a "mammary vest" flayed from the
torso of a woman. Gein later confessed that he enjoyed dressing himself in this and other human–
skin garments and pretending he was his own mother. The scattered remains of an estimated fifteen
bodies were found at the farmhouse when Gein was eventually arrested, but he could not remember

Ed Gein Beliefs
Ed Gein was born August 27, 1906 and had an older brother, Henry Gein and was raised by an
alcoholic father and a religious mother who told them them that woman were bad (except for her).
She would divorce him, but that is bad for her religion. Ed and Henry were not allowed to make
friends because of her religion. Their mom abused them and told them that they were going to be
failures like their dad so she didn't treat them well because they were going to be failures. He was
not allowed to leave the farm unless he was going to school so he had no friends. When he got older,
his brother told him to leave because his mom would not let them have freedom because of their
religion. In 1940 Geins dad died from a heart attack from his drinking. On May 16 1944 there was a

So he lived alone in his barn with nobody. So he went to dig up graves to get women that looked

Edward Theodore Gein killed 54–year–old Mary Hogan with a .22– caliber rifle, he found her at a
tavern (bar). When he killed her he decapitated her head and put her head in a paper bag. In
November 16 1957 he killed 58–year–old Bernice C. Worden with the same weapon and he found
her at the hardware store and, he placed her head in a burlap sack (a bag) . When he got done killing
them, he used their body parts as materials like bowls from skulls, human skin that covered the
chairs, a lampshade that was made from human faces, and organs in the refrigerator. When he was
caught, he didn't go to jail, but was called insane and when to the mental hospital, but in July 26,

Hannibal Lecter's 'Silence Of The Lambs'
Silence of the Lambs Character Analysis Research Paper The Silence of the Lambs series uses many
psychological terms which are brought to light as the story follows a young female FBI trainee
named Clarice Starling. She must confide in an imprisoned and manipulative cannibalistic
psychopath psychiatrist named Hannibal Lecter, to find and catch another serial killer by the name
of Jame 'Buffalo Bill Gumb. 'Buffalo Bill' was the nickname given to this serial killer because he
skins his victims, just as Buffalo Bill Cody in the old west would skin the hides of Buffalos after he
would kill them. Clarice Starling is not a psychopath, unlike Dr. L. and Buffalo Bill who are
psychopaths like those of real serial killers like those names of Ted Bundy, ... Show more content on

He is impulsive because of a decrease in activity in his orbital cortex and the area around the
amygdala, along with parts of his frontal cortex as well. This is because Dr. Fallon, a psychologist in
real life, who did many tests over 15 convicted serial killers and used a PET scan on them, showed a
decrease in the amygdala and in the orbital cortex which all can correlate to the decrease of thinking
before acting, which more often than not, plays a major part in a serial killer's mind. As Dr. Fallon
states, "In a healthy brain, this area prevents impulsivity (i.e., it inhibits behavior), so when it is
turned off, the person is impulsive" (Fallon, 2013, p. 45). Hannibal does think before he acts, as he
is supposedly a genius, but he only thinks to a degree when there is a personal gain or motive which
brings out his narcissistic personality disorder. When Hannibal had given Clarice correct clues and
incorrect ones to others, he would be provoking confrontation between her and Jame Gumb which
nearly got Clarice shot by Gumb. He only wants Clarice to find Jame Gumb, so he can ultimately
kill her. This brings out his antisocial personality disorder where Hannibal has exhibited the extreme
lack of conscience of others. Hannibal is definitely a psychopath because he kills with no remorse
over and over without believing it is wrong to do so, as do all other psychopaths and sociopaths
think the same way as Lecter does. He also has childhood trauma of his parents killed and his sister
eaten which led to his post–traumatic stress disorder. He was modeled after the serial Ed Gein and
Ted Bundy. Also after serial killer Albert Fish for his cannibalistic

Ed Gein Essay
This paper is based on the life of Ed Gein. He was an unusual character, born on a farm, and raised
by a religious crazy, domineering mother. In the space of a few years his entire family passed away
and he was left to take care of his farm all by himself. In the next few years he became a grave
robber, a necrophiliac, a cannibal, and also took up arts and crafts in body parts. He is known as one
of the weirdest serial killers of the twentieth century. He also inspired movies like Psycho, Silence
of The Lambs, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

friend, he agreed to assist in digging up the body for "medical experiments". His first corpse was
less than 12 feet away from his mother's grave.
Over the next 10 years Ed did the same thing look up obituaries in the local newspaper and dig up
fresh corpses on a full moon. He would take the whole corpse or just the parts that he needed at the
time.
His experiments with dead bodies were bizarre. He would construct objects with the bones and skin

He would commit acts of necrophilia on the bodies. He even dug up his own mother's corpse!

full body suit made of women skin, breasts and face included.
His collections of trophies got larger, and so did the range of his experimentation and obsession. Gus
was then taken to an asylum, and Ed was then left alone again. Ed thought that fresher bodies would

Symptoms And Symptoms Of A Mental Disorder
A mental disorder is a diagnosis of a behavioral or mental pattern that can cause suffering or a poor
ability to function in ordinary life. Such features may be persistent, relapsing and remitting, or occur
as a single episode. Many disorders have been described, with signs and symptoms that vary widely
between specific disorders.
The causes of mental disorders are often unclear. Theories may incorporate findings from a range of
fields. Mental disorders are usually defined by a combination of how a person behaves, feels,
perceives or thinks.
Services are based in psychiatric hospitals or in the community, and assessments are carried out by
psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and clinical social workers, using various methods but often ...

DSM–IV precedes the definition with caveats, stating that, as in the case with many medical terms,
mental disorder "lacks a consistent operational definition that covers all situations", noting that
different levels of abstraction can be used for medical definitions, including pathology,
symptomology, deviance from a normal range, or etiology, and that the same is true for mental
disorders, so that sometimes one type of definition is appropriate, and sometimes another, depending
on the situation. Edward Theodore Gein was an American murderer and body snatcher. His crimes,
committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety after
authorities discovered Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and

Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27th in 1906 in the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Even
at the beginning, it seems as though he had a troubled home life. Upon moving to a small farm
outside Plainfield, his father was always working–whether it was as a carpenter and tanner, or at the
farm. When he isn't working however, he is drinking. As such, he is not around for the major family
decisions, leaving them to Ed's mother Augusta, whom was very religious. Ed's father died in 1940.
Four years later, his brother Henry died whilst battling fires. That left Ed and his mother. But sadly,
that was shortly lived as his mother died from a stroke that same year. This caused doubts for Ed. He
has considered multiple times to get transsexual surgery, but turned against it because he thought
there were better ways of 'turning female'. For this, among other odd personality traits, he became
secluded, never talking to those in the community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He developed a very unhealthy interest in the anatomy of the female body, looking through medical
encyclopedias and pornographic magazines. During World War 2, he was fascinated by the medical
experiments performed in the concentration camps. After all this, he still wanted to know more
about the female body. So, he went to multiple cemeteries and dug up female bodies, dissecting the
body. He would take the skin from the body and wear them as suits to dance in, use different organs
to make furniture, or would fondle the victim's genitalia, wearing the underwear that they have worn
or he has put on the body. But this isn't all, he would save specific parts for fancier days–wearing the
face, scalp, or 'vest' of the bodies torso and breasts. Gein felt that this would help him achieve
contentment by 'putting on' a different gender and also made him feel 'closer' to his

The Characteristics Of Ed Gein And The Leatherface
In 1974, director Tobe Hooper revolutionized horror with his film "inspired by a true story," THE
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Almost immediately after the film's release, rumors began to
circulate that there was an actual chainsaw wielding madman living with his deranged family in the
town of Poth, Texas. The inspired events were also said to have taken place on August 18th, 1973.
However, a quick check of that date reveals that the film had just wrapped four days' prior, making it
fairly difficult to base a film on an actual event that had yet to occur. Despite this, there was an
actual skin–wearing maniac that was the film's inspiration.
He may not have had a chainsaw, but serial killer Ed Gein was a key inspiration for the infamous
Leatherface. Born in 1906 in Plainfield, Wisconsin, Ed Gein lived most of his life as a reclusive
loner. Born to an alcoholic father, George, and a fanatically religious mother, Augusta, Ed Gein
suffered heavy psychological and physical abuse at the hands of his parents. Classmates remember
Ed as being reclusive with strange habits. One of his most unnerving habits was to randomly laugh
out loud as though someone had told a joke that only he could hear.

Edward Theodore Gein – America's Most Infamous Murderer
Although tallying just two deaths, Ed Gein is one of America's most infamous murderers. His
notorious killings are remembered as being among the most perverse of any this century. His lunatic
atrocities were magnified by the number of victims who fell prey to his sick deeds and who also
fueled his numerous habits of cannibalism, necrophilia of women, and his obsession with the female
body, especially his mother, Augusta Gein. Although clearly guilty for the acts Gein committed,
psychiatrists were confident in their conclusion of his insanity. As is in many cases, Gein's birth of
insanity started in childhood.

In 1914 disgusted by the "depravity" (Taylor) of the town she decided to move the family to a 195–
acre farm deep in rural Wisconsin, where the family lived quietly for about 25 years. In 1940 George
Gein died, leaving Augusta with Henry, 38 and Ed, 34 who worked as handymen in nearby
Plainfield to pay the household bills. Henry would frequently bad–mouth his mother within earshot
of Ed, who remained a "stalwart devotee of the matriarch" (Schechter 32). In May 1944 a fire broke
out in the brush near the Geins' farm. When the fire department turned up, Ed said his brother was
missing but he led them directly to the spot where Henry lay, covered in soot. The police chose to
ignore two marks on the back of his head and put Henry's death down to him being asphyxiated by
fumes as he fought the fire. Whether Ed had anything to do with his brother's death remains a
mystery to this day.
For a year Ed and his mother lived alone together in the big old farmhouse. While her health
deteriorated, Ed was ecstatic that he finally had his mother to himself; sometimes they would even
sleep in the same bed together. So when Augusta developed cancer and died on December 29, 1945
after a series of strokes Ed was devastated, and became increasingly deranged after her death. Gein

Edward lived a repressive and a solitary life. His older died in 1944 and his mother in 1945. When
she died gein was a 39 year old men who had never been married. "weird old Eddie" is how people
knew him. Ed began to develop an unhealthy interest in the female body after his mother's death and
maybe that was all because when gein was growing up, his mom told him sex was a sin. So he never

by the female body he started seeking out fasher samples. Usually women of his mother's age.

his mother's disappearance, Frank Worden and the sheriff went to check out the old Gein place,
already infamous amongst the local children as a haunted house. There, the gruesome evidence
proved that Gein's bizarre obsessions had finally exploded into murder, and much, much worse. In
the woodshed of the farm was the naked, headless body of Bernice Worden, hanging upside down

Edward Theodore "Ed" Gein, American Psycho. How would you classify Gein after reading his

Gein retrieved corpses for his sexual gratification, which meets the criteria for regular necrophilia.
Eventually, Gein advanced to necrophilic homicide.
I would classify Gein as a male solo serial murder. According to the FBI's definition, serial murder

In 1956, serial killer Ed Gein was arrested in his Wisconsin home. The quiet hermit was found to be
in possession of various items made out of human skin, shrunken heads, even soup bowls that were
made from human skulls. It was determined that he lived alone because of his family's untimely
demise, his father died in the late 40's and his mother died in the 50's. After their deaths, Gein went
insane and turned into a human butcher. Even though, he was only guilty of murdering two women,
he also confessed to be a serial grave robber that would dig up and carve up the bodies he exhumed.
Gein even went as far making a human skin costume and would wear it, posing as the opposite sex.

The Obsatment Theory Of Edward Gein
Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27th 1906 in La Crosse Wisconsin to an alcoholic father
and an extremely religious mother who taught him that sex was a sinful act an early age and
preached her religious teachings to both Ed and his brother. ( A&E Television Network, 2017) By
1915 Gein's mother had decided to move the family to a farm in Plainfield Wisconsin and only let
him go out in order to go to school. Due to this, the main influence in his life was his mother. Once
his mother died in 1945 Geins obsessive attachment to her and her teachings would end up making
him one of the most heinous and notorious killers in American history. This essay will show how the
attachment theory is applicable in Ed Gein's case. More specifically how Gein's attachment to his
mother and how her death ultimately proved to be deadly.
Gein's most influential childhood influence was his mother Augusta who was a very strict and
religious woman. Augusta despised her husband who was an alcoholic and wanted to raise her
children in a religious environment in order to keep them away from a life of sin. Gein's father was
unable to keep a steady job and finally decided to move to a farm isolated from urbanization. ( A&E
Television Network, 2017) Gein's father would both verbally and physically abuse him and his
brother Henry as a result of alcoholism. Although his mother would also verbally abuse him Gein
idolized her. His mother used the opportunity the farm presented in order to turn away

A Psychoanalysis of Edward Gein Essay
I have chosen to write my Case Study paper on Edward Gein from the Psychodynamic theoretical
perspective. I believe that his behavior is a perfect case for the psychodynamic perspective because
of the family dynamic in his home. These circumstances led to the actions that would become the
inspiration for many books and movie characters because of the oddity and extreme nature of his
human interactions. Possibly the first crime that Edward committed was killing his older brother.
This has significance on the psychological level because Edward's older brother began to disagree
with their mother's world perspective and I believe this was the motivation for this crime. He loved
his mother very much possibly to the point of Parent–Child ... Show more content on

He took the skin of these women's bodies and tanned them making artifacts for around the house

an extreme and unique case of a type of Gender Identity Disorder. Because of his secluded lifestyle
without a connection to the outside world these behaviors along with others went unnoticed until a
woman disappeared from a hardware store where he was witnessed to have been at the same time as
the disappearance. When the search lead to his farm not only did the police find that he did murder
the victim, but that he had been mutilating scores of corpses. Her body was found hanging by the

I love how Geddes was able to capture a baby just acting a baby. Sucking on her thumb, not sitting
up all the way, not crying, just all of the elements of this photo show simply perfect. I love that
Geddes was able to put a hat on the baby's head, considering how much older the baby looks. The
focus of this picture prevails phenomenal work. This picture does not obtain any distractions in this
photo. I like how the background of this photo shows a darker purple than that of a lighter purple
than that on the babies dress. The lighting and exposure of this photo prevail as perfect. I do not
think that the photographer could have done anything different to make this picture any better than it
already shows. I think the subject matter for this photo prevails itself as purposeful, and the
photographer had a purpose in her mind that she was trying to go by when taking the image. I also
think the color adds to the meaning of the photo. I think the photographer wanted to use different
shades of purple to really make the baby with the darker purple romper on pop out more. I think the
subject positioning, symmetry, clutter, sparseness and cropping show perfectness. I think the
photographer had just the right amount of everything to make it where it was more of one thing than

Patrick Suskind's Perfume Character Analysis
Patrick Süskind's seminal 1985 novel, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, achieves that rare feat of
creating a main character who is both the protagonist and antagonist or in another phrase an anti–
hero. The novel discusses the life of Grenouille who became an infamous criminal who lived in the
significant change and unrest in Paris in 18th century France and had experienced life chiefly
through his highly developed sense of smell. Süskind's did a marvelous job in using personality
traits that can be easily be distinguished to an actual serial killer. He has also been more in–depth
within Grenouille's personality by adding common mental disabilities and psychological abuse that
the majority of infamous killers faced throughout their lives. ... Show more content on

Without bearing an odor, he was titled as unidentified and abominable. This led him the absence for
someone to guide him and comprehending the difference of what is considered morally right or
wrong. However, unlike Grenouille, Ed Gein isolation was due to the fault of parental guidance.
Gein lived a repressive and solitary life on his family homestead with a weak brother, violent
unemployed alcoholic father, and domineering mother. His mother, moved into a desolate location
to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons. ("Ed Gein: Real American Psycho." Ed Gein: Real
American Psycho.) Gein only left the premises to go to school and she blocked any attempt he made
to pursue friendships. The mother, who was a fanatical Lutheran, drummed into her boys the innate
immorality of the world, the evil of drink and the belief that all women (herself excluded) were
prostitutes and lubricious. When she died, her son was a thirty–nine–year–old bachelor, still
emotionally enslaved to the woman who had tyrannized his life. (Ed Gein Biography and Crime
Scene Photos." Wisconsin Sickness.)
In addition, Both Gien and Grenouille also had the capability to manipulate others, one of the main
symptoms that each sociopath carry. Grenouille manipulated Baldini so he can stay and work with
him. He also manipulated the public and the government to pardon his crimes and Laure

Edward Theodore Gein Research Paper
Edward Theodore Gein, more commonly known as Ed Gein, was born Aug 27 1906, in La Crosse
Wisconsin, USA (Jenkins par 1). Ed had a harsh childhood, he experienced it with Henry, his older
brother, and his parents, Augusta and George. His mother had been religiously dedicated, and Ed
was zealously devoted to her, whereas his father was an alcoholic (Biograpgy.com Editors par 2).
Growing up Augusta was very dominant, often verbally abusing the Gein brothers. She had the
utmost control over Ed and Henry, both were not allowed any social interaction with individuals she
disliked. She taught them about religion, often reading to them from the Bible, especially verses
about pre–martial sexual relations, and all women being whores and prostitutes. At school Ed was
often bullied, because of his lack of social behaviour, most likely caused by his mother. Ed listened
to his mother and respected her, but on the other hand Harry, Ed's brother, openly hated what she
preached and would challenge her views. George couldn't do anything; he wasn't a violent alcoholic
but instead quite feeble. Augusta wore the "pants" in the relationship, and although she hated
George, because of his alcoholic ways, divorce was out of the question, as she believed divorce
itself was a sin. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4 years after the death of George, a fire occurred on their property in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Ed was
believed to have taken advantage of this "surprise" fire, and had hit Harry in the head, with some
sort of object. This was later proven when Ed had reported the fire and missing brother to law
enforcement, but when they arrived on site to investigate Ed was able to point the police in the
direction of Harry's deceased body without difficulty. Harry's death was determined a cause of
smoke inhalation, despite dubious head bruising. Harry was later believed to have been Ed's first

Ed Gein Research Paper
Many of you may know Ed Gein from his influence on the characters from Texas Chainsaw
Massacre as "leatherface", American Horror Story as "Dr. Thredson"/"Bloody Face", Psycho as
"Norman Bates", The Silence of the Lambs as "James Gumb". But, This certain serial killer is much
more than how he is portrayed in these films. He was even a furniture entrepreneur of sorts among
other things.
Ed was born on August 27,1906 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He endured a fairly secluded childhood.
This is due to his mother being overly religious. She moved their family out to a farm nearly a
quarter of a mile from the neighbors. She would often preach to her two sons about the immorality
of the outside world. She often verbally abused them telling them they would be failures like their
drunken father. She would poison their minds farther by tainting their view on women and making
them believe they were all prostitutes and instruments of the devil.
Due to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many rumors that he was making himself a "woman suit". He would cut off the genitalia
of the body and where them to know what it was like.
Even though he is know as a serial killer, he was only proven to have killed 2 people, Mary Hogan
and Bernice Worden. Both of these women lived in Plainfield, wisconsin and were both local store
owners. Both were in their mid to late 50's and shot in the head. These kills were nearly 2 years
apart.
Ed was never charged with the murder of Mary Hogan. He was only discovered when Bernices' son
reported seeing Gein the night before she went missing asking about antifreeze. When police raided
his home while he wasn't home, the found the heads of MAry and Bernice in bags in his shed. They
also found the body of Bernice hanging from the ceiling with her chest dressed out. It is also
reported that her insides looked as though they may have been

Edward Gein Research Paper

  • 1. Edward Gein Research Paper Edward Gein was born in August 27, 1906 in La Crosse. He is the son of a timid alcoholic father and a fanatically religious mother. Gein grew up alongside his older brother Henry, in a household ruled by his mother's puritanical preaching about sins of lust and carnal desires. His father, George Philip Gein, died from a heart attack caused by alcoholism on April 1, 1940. After his father's death, Henry and Edward started to odd jobs in order to cover living expenses; Both considered handymen, however, Edward considered babysitting the most. On May 16, 1944, Edward and his brother were both burning away marsh vegetation on the property, but fire started to go out of control which drew the attention of the fire department. Part of Edward Gein's "art" collection included a wastebasket and chair seats composed of human flesh, skulls on bedposts, a corset constructed with a female torso skinned from shoulders to waist, leggings made from human leg skin, and masks created from the skin of female heads. On November 21, 1957, Gein was arraigned on one count of first–degree murder in Waushara County Court, where he pled not guilty by reason of insanity. Found mentally incompetent and thus unfit for trial, Gein was sent to a central state hospital that was strictly housed for the criminally insane. In 1968, doctors determined Gein was mentally able to confer with counsel and participate in his defense. On November 14, 1968, Gein was found guilty of first–degree murder by Judge Robert H. Gollmar. Soon, a second trial dealt with Gein's sanity. After testimony by doctors for the prosecution and defense, Gollmar ruled Gein "not guilty by reason of insanity" and ordered him to the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. At the same time, mental illness has been the common denominator in one act of mass violence after another" (Blunt). Those under some sort of mental illness often commit their crimes under the influence of that illness and are not aware of what they are doing. There are cases in which they do not receive the proper health during sentencing and affects them in the long run, or they have been imprisoned and let out without being provided with the proper help. Characteristics And Characteristics Of A Personality Disorder Over the years, throughout history until the present day, we have encountered various criminals from lavish thieves, financial swindlers, rapists, terrorists and serial murderers. • 9. Who Is Edward Gein Ed Gein Spenser Wiles Born: August 27, 1906 Death: July 26, 1984 Edward Theodore Gein was born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin in 1906. The second son of George Philip and Augusta Wilhelmine Gein. Augusta despised her husband, an alcoholic who was unable to keep a job. He worked various times as a carpenter and an insurance salesman. Augusta owned a local grocery shop and later sold it in 1914 for a farm to live in isolation near Plainfield, Wisconsin, which was there permanent home. Augusta took advantage of the isolation by turning away outsiders from getting close to her sons. Edward only left the farm to attend school. Outside of school, he spent most of his time doing chores on the farm. Edward was shy, and classmates and teachers remembered him as having strange mannerisms, such as random laughter. He tried to make friends but his mother would punish him whenever he tried. Lacking Social development, he did fairly well in school, particularly reading class. • 11. Thematic Symbols In The Film 'Silence Of The Lambs' One of the most successful horror films of all time, Silence of the Lambs has always been something of a mystery. Themes of government sponsored brainwashing in the creation of serial killers are so expertly hidden in plain sight. It is for this reason that Silence of the Lambs may be considered one of the most rebellious and thrilling movies ever made. Perhaps the first image people encountered, when the movie premiered in 1991, was the poster. It shows Jodie Foster's face with a moth covering her mouth. Her eyes, usually blue, are red. Close examination of the faux skull markings on the moth's head, reveals the skull to be made up of seven naked women. The moth and its cousin the butterfly are probably the most important thematic symbols ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ed Gein began robbing graves–keeping body parts as trophies, practicing necrophilia, and experimenting with human taxidermy. Gein took the women's bodies back to his farm, peeled off their faces and preserved the skin by putting oil on them. Gein would wear the faces and stare at himself, dressing up with wigs jewelry and fake breasts. He then turned to murder, killing at least two women in 1957. Gein inspired film characters Norman Bates (Psycho), James Gumb (The Silence of the Lambs) and Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre). It would be very convenient to be able to attribute all the horrible things that Hannibal does to the fact that he's a sick psychopath with no redeeming features whatsoever. And for the most part, this is the picture painted by the surface narrative. One look through the bullet proof glass, however, reveals this to be another rather clever piece of staging. At Crawford's first mention of the word Hannibal, Clarice automatically recites, what is now one of the most recognizable catch–phrases of the film 'Hannibal the Cannibal.' We find out quite early on that Hannibal eats his victims or his 'evidence' so there's an obvious explanation for his moniker. It could be argued that Harris was indeed taking a metaphorical swipe at programs like MK Ultra that seek to use trauma to control a civilian person's mind so they can be used to commit further ... • 13. Horror And Suspense In Alfred Hitchcock's Film Psycho In the film Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock he used several shots and symbolism to get across the theme of horror and suspense. This is particularly apparent in the parlor scene, which has a very important role of developing the characters and showing the audience how the characters feel and how they act. When Marion and Norman are sitting in the parlour engaging in conversation, Hitchcock uses a slightly upwards facing shot on Norman, showing he is slightly sinister and aggressive, yet he is sitting in a relaxed and calming manner, showing he is split in personality. In this scene this is shown in another way by the lighting over Norman's face, half of his face are in the shadows while the other in the light, showing the positive and negative sides in Norman's personality, this is shown later in the film when ... When Norman starts talking about his mother Hitchcock uses an upwards facing shot to show aggression and power in Norman and as Norman leans forward in a somewhat menacing way a stuffed owl is shown in the background, in an aggressive stance about to attack that of a small mammal or bird. While around Marion there are small dainty birds showing that Marion isn't as strong and independent as she thinks, as she soon has a change of heart about stealing the large sum of money from her boss. When talking about his mother Norman uses the dialogue "why she's as harmless as one of those stuffed birds" which is foreshadowing the future event of finding out that Norman preserved and kept his mother much like does with the birds after all his "hobby is stuffing things, you know? taxidermy." This is very similar to that of what Ed Gein did, after his mother died he began to create a woman suit so that he could become his mother, while Norman merely dressed like her and consumed both her and in the end his ... • 15. Edward Theodore Gein Edward Theodore Gein (1906–1984), known as The Butcher of Plainfield, was an American serial killer guilty of the murder of at least two women between 1947 and 1957. Ed Gein was such a controversial and disturbing figure that his story inspired a lot of plots for thriller movies and books, such as the character of Norman Bates in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, a novel by Thomas Harris. The life of Ed Gein was significantly marked by several factors: he spent his childhood with George, an alcoholic and absent father, and Augusta, an overprotective and extremely religious mother, obsessed by the idea that the world was populated by impure and sinful people. Ed had to face his father's and brother's death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The definition of attachment involves an affectional bond that infants need to form with a differentiated and preferred individual that becomes an attachment figure, consisting in a sustained nurturing relationship with the sensitive caregiver (Bowlbly, 1979). Attachment is conceptualized as an evolutionary feature: individuals can create a secure base around which one is able to explore and gain independence as well as a safe haven to which individuals can return and be reassured in a situation of distress or danger (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Bowlby, 1969). On the contrary, unresponsive or atypical ways of parenting can lead to aberrant behaviours or, if others risk factors are present, to psychopathology (Jacobsen, Edelstein, Hoffman, 1994; Schaffer, 1996). Secure attachment with the primary caregiver is necessary for social and emotional regulation as well as cognitive and resilience abilities(Bowlby, 1982; Ainsworth & Bell,1970); insecure attachment affects individuals' life in many aspects, especially the ability to face distress (Macbeth et al., 2011), and not too rarely the aftermaths of an insane attachment can culminate in personality disorders (Crawford et al., ... • 17. Psycho Movie Analysis The movie that I chose to do my movie review over is Psycho. In this movie a young woman, Marion, is having a sexual relationship with this man that she does not know is married to another woman. Marion works for a company doing the financial needs, and one day she is given a suitcase that is she is suppose to take to the bank for her boss. She ends up stealing the money, leaving town and booking her way to see her lover. A few incidences happen to her while she makes her way to her man, but it is when she gets to the Bates Motel that things start to get psychology weird. When she reaches the hotel there is a man there by the name of Norman Bates. Norman is not normal at all, he is struggling from a multiperson disorder and inability to know wrong and right. He tells the Marion that his mother is alive and living in the house but really she is dead, he had killed her previously. He goes into details to Marion about his relationship with his dead mother. Marion, is very intrigued and happy to hear what Norman has to say about his and his mother relationship, but tells Norman she needs to get herself ready for the man she had come to see. As Marion organizes herself and makes her way to the shower, Norman is in the hotel office, through a hole in the wall behind a hanging picture, watching her get undressed. He watches for a solid five minutes before the scene changes to him running at the shower curtain swinging a knife and killing Marion. During this part of the movie, you ... • 19. Edward Gein Social Control Theory "She's not missing, she's at the farm right now." This haunting quote comes from the mouth of one of the most grotesque and brutal serial killers to ever live, Edward Gein. Edward was born on August 27th 1906 to an abusive alcoholic father, George Gein and an overly religious mother, Augusta Carter. Along with Edward, George and Augusta gave birth to Edwards older brother Henry in 1902. The family settled down in the little town of Lacrosse, Wisconsin where Augusta raised the young boys. For the most part, her husband George was left out of the picture mainly because Augusta believed he was a worthless alcoholic. This paper will discuss the connection between Edward's crimes and social control theory in order to arrive at a conclusion as to why Gein committed the brutal murders he did. Before we dive into Gein's criminal history and early life we need to understand why social control theories differ from most other criminological theories. Social control theories tend to dive deeper into the realm of "Why didn't someone offend" opposed to "why did someone offend." Most criminological theories seek to explain how the need to conform to society affects criminal development ,but social control theories center around the idea that there are multiple outside factors that encourage ... Perfume Character Analysis Patrick Süskind's seminal 1985 novel, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, achieves that rare feat of creating a main character that portrays a protagonist that lacks conventional heroic qualities or in other literature term, an anti–hero. He had experienced life chiefly through his highly developed sense of smell. Not because the questioned simply does not want to answer but perhaps because they cannot answer. This theory falls into the classical utilitarianism line combined with rational choice theory (Barkan p. 93). In researching Edward Theodore Gein, I discovered this is one of those cases where "Why" never came to pass and he took to his own grave those unanswered questions. Did these acts of crime and necrophilia arise from the clear dysfunctional home life and upbringing or was Ed Gein simply a psychopath? How he came to be. "Nonetheless, offenders still make decisions that appear rational to them at the time they make them (Barkan, p. 96)." Theory Analysis Ed Gein deeply desired to please his mother above all else. Augusta Gein an archaic Lutheran controlled her sons to the extreme. Ed did attend public school however he was an outcast and often bullied by other students. Despite the mistreatment, he managed to do well in and enjoyed school. When Ed tried to socialize at school this did not please his mother and anytime Ed tried to make friends, his mother scolded him. The isolation from any other outside influences could not have been healthy and added to his insecurities in an everyday social lifestyle. Gein was often described as a loner, awkward and aloof. Augusta read to both her sons daily from the Old Testament Bible from scripture usually graphic in nature with versus dealing with death, murder and divine retribution. Gein tried to make his mother happy but his efforts were usually met with harsh criticism and she was rarely pleased with her sons. She often scolded them and verbally abused them by telling them they were going to end up disappointments like their father (Woods, 1995). • 27. The Obsatment Theory Of Edward Gein Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27th, 1906 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to an alcoholic father and an extremely religious mother who taught him that sex was a sinful act an early age and preached her religious teachings to both Ed and his brother. By 1915 Gein's mother had decided to move the family to a farm in Plainfield Wisconsin and only let him go out in order to go to school. Due to this, the main influence in his life was his mother. Once his mother died in 1945 Gein's obsessive attachment to her and her teachings would end up making him one of the most heinous and notorious killers in American history. This essay will show how the attachment theory is applicable in Ed Gein's case. More specifically, how Gein's attachment to his mother and how her death ultimately proved to be deadly. Gein's most influential childhood influence was his mother Augusta who was a very strict and religious woman. Augusta despised her husband who was an alcoholic and wanted to raise her children in a religious environment in order to keep them away from a life of sin. Gein's father was unable to keep a steady job and finally decided to move to a farm isolated from urbanization. ( A&E Television Network, 2017) Gein's father would both verbally and physically abuse him and his brother Henry as a result of alcoholism. This is because Dr. Fallon, a psychologist in real life, who did many tests over 15 convicted serial killers and used a PET scan on them, showed a decrease in the amygdala and in the orbital cortex which all can correlate to the decrease of thinking before acting, which more often than not, plays a major part in a serial killer's mind. As Dr. Fallon states, "In a healthy brain, this area prevents impulsivity (i.e., it inhibits behavior), so when it is turned off, the person is impulsive" (Fallon, 2013, p. 45). Hannibal does think before he acts, as he is supposedly a genius, but he only thinks to a degree when there is a personal gain or motive which brings out his narcissistic personality disorder. • 48. Edward Gein Research Paper Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27th in 1906 in the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Even at the beginning, it seems as though he had a troubled home life. Upon moving to a small farm outside Plainfield, his father was always working–whether it was as a carpenter and tanner, or at the farm. When he isn't working however, he is drinking. As such, he is not around for the major family decisions, leaving them to Ed's mother Augusta, whom was very religious. Ed's father died in 1940. Four years later, his brother Henry died whilst battling fires. That left Ed and his mother. But sadly, that was shortly lived as his mother died from a stroke that same year. This caused doubts for Ed. He has considered multiple times to get transsexual surgery, but turned against it because he thought there were better ways of 'turning female'. For this, among other odd personality traits, he became secluded, never talking to those in the community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, he went to multiple cemeteries and dug up female bodies, dissecting the body. He would take the skin from the body and wear them as suits to dance in, use different organs to make furniture, or would fondle the victim's genitalia, wearing the underwear that they have worn or he has put on the body. But this isn't all, he would save specific parts for fancier days–wearing the face, scalp, or 'vest' of the bodies torso and breasts. • 50. The Characteristics Of Ed Gein And The Leatherface In 1974, director Tobe Hooper revolutionized horror with his film "inspired by a true story," THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Almost immediately after the film's release, rumors began to circulate that there was an actual chainsaw wielding madman living with his deranged family in the town of Poth, Texas. The inspired events were also said to have taken place on August 18th, 1973. However, a quick check of that date reveals that the film had just wrapped four days' prior, making it fairly difficult to base a film on an actual event that had yet to occur. Despite this, there was an actual skin–wearing maniac that was the film's inspiration. He may not have had a chainsaw, but serial killer Ed Gein was a key inspiration for the infamous Leatherface. Born in 1906 in Plainfield, Wisconsin, Ed Gein lived most of his life as a reclusive loner. Born to an alcoholic father, George, and a fanatically religious mother, Augusta, Ed Gein suffered heavy psychological and physical abuse at the hands of his parents. Classmates remember Ed as being reclusive with strange habits. One of his most unnerving habits was to randomly laugh out loud as though someone had told a joke that only he could hear. • 52. Edward Theodore Gein Edward Theodore Gein – America's Most Infamous Murderer Although tallying just two deaths, Ed Gein is one of America's most infamous murderers. His notorious killings are remembered as being among the most perverse of any this century. His lunatic atrocities were magnified by the number of victims who fell prey to his sick deeds and who also fueled his numerous habits of cannibalism, necrophilia of women, and his obsession with the female body, especially his mother, Augusta Gein. In 1914 disgusted by the "depravity" (Taylor) of the town she decided to move the family to a 195– acre farm deep in rural Wisconsin, where the family lived quietly for about 25 years. In 1940 George Gein died, leaving Augusta with Henry, 38 and Ed, 34 who worked as handymen in nearby Plainfield to pay the household bills. Henry would frequently bad–mouth his mother within earshot of Ed, who remained a "stalwart devotee of the matriarch" (Schechter 32). In May 1944 a fire broke out in the brush near the Geins' farm. When the fire department turned up, Ed said his brother was missing but he led them directly to the spot where Henry lay, covered in soot. The police chose to ignore two marks on the back of his head and put Henry's death down to him being asphyxiated by fumes as he fought the fire. Whether Ed had anything to do with his brother's death remains a mystery to this day. For a year Ed and his mother lived alone together in the big old farmhouse. While her health deteriorated, Ed was ecstatic that he finally had his mother to himself; sometimes they would even sleep in the same bed together. So when Augusta developed cancer and died on December 29, 1945 after a series of strokes Ed was devastated, and became increasingly deranged after her death. The quiet hermit was found to be in possession of various items made out of human skin, shrunken heads, even soup bowls that were made from human skulls. Due to this, the main influence in his life was his mother. Once his mother died in 1945 Geins obsessive attachment to her and her teachings would end up making him one of the most heinous and notorious killers in American history. This essay will show how the attachment theory is applicable in Ed Gein's case. More specifically how Gein's attachment to his mother and how her death ultimately proved to be deadly. Augusta despised her husband who was an alcoholic and wanted to raise her children in a religious environment in order to keep them away from a life of sin. I believe that his behavior is a perfect case for the psychodynamic perspective because of the family dynamic in his home. These circumstances led to the actions that would become the inspiration for many books and movie characters because of the oddity and extreme nature of his human interactions. Possibly the first crime that Edward committed was killing his older brother. This has significance on the psychological level because Edward's older brother began to disagree with their mother's world perspective and I believe this was the motivation for this crime.
