Ghost Town Dance Interpretation
The three recordings that I chose are Adam Lambert's Ghost Town, Sully Erna from Godsmack's Voodoo, and Benjamin Burnley from Breaking
Benjamin's Dairy of Jane.
In Ghost Town, Adam Lambert's voice is very distinctive where he has a smooth, light, and velvety sound for a good portion of the song, however,
during some portions, such as towards the ending, his timbre is very dark, rich, and full. Thought the entire song his timbre holds a somber feeling even
when singing a considerably light.
Sully Erna (the lead singer of Godsmack) during Voodoo has a very raspy, dark, and thin timber. Within the piece some parts are creamier than others,
where it is slightly harsh. Through Voodoo Sully Erna's timbre can also be described as mellow and may sometimes be flat or lacking depth. Also I
would describe the tone color as being darker rather than lighter.
Benjamin Burnley's (the lead singer of Breaking Benjamin) timbre is more along the lines of being harsh, heavy, airy, and dark. During most of this
song there are rare moments where his timbre can be perceived as being velvety but during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adam Lambert and Sully Erna can share the timbre description of being creamy and velvety. Both singers tend to favor the lower range of singing
and tend to smoothly transition from one word to the other instead of jumping as Benjamin Burnley tends to do. Both Sully Erna and Benjamin
Burnley, however, share the quality of tending to be more along the lines of an airy and harsh side of timbre quality. And Adam Lambert and
Benjamin Burnley share the timbre quality of creating a somber feeling with the favoritism to the darker register as well as the natural feeling of

The New York Classical Players
Beethoven Encounters paper On Saturday December 5, 2015 I went to the New York Public Library Center for the Preforming Arts at Lincoln Center
to view the performance called "Beethoven Encounters". The show was free and it was in the Bruno Walter Auditorium. The pieces being performed
were "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 5" all four movements. This was followed by "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 1" all four movements of this. Which was
then finished with "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 4" with all four movements again. The show began at 2:30 in the afternoon and went on for about
an hour or so. The group presenting were the "The New York Classical Players". This group is a quartet. All four members are highly trained
classical violinists who have all preformed multiple times in the past with "The New York Classical Players". The lead violinist was David
Southorn who is the second most well trained person in this group. Danbi Um, the second violinist, is an Israeli violinist who mostly does solo work
but she also is an extremely well experienced violinist. She has performed in both America and Israel doing shows in concert halls as well as on local
television. The third, and most experienced violinist is Wei–Yang Andy Lin. He is a Taiwanese violinist who has been the teacher of at least one other
member of this group. That member was David Southorn. Mister Lin is currently a faculty member at the Chinese Cultural Arts Institute in Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania. The last member of the

Crescendos In The Firebird Suite
In both pieces of music, The Firebird Suite, by Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) and C–Jam Blues, by Duke Ellington, there are traces of dynamics and
timbre, also known as tone color, throughout. Dynamics is defined as "degrees of loudness or softness in music," and timbre is defined as "quality of
sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another." Both pieces have repeated melodies, but The Firebird Suite shows the use of more
crescendos and decrescendo, while C–Jam Blues uses improvisation, which is "music created at the same time it is performed." Each piece has things in
common, and at the same time are two completely different compositions of music.
In Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite, there is a varying use of crescendos and decrescendos.

Music In Video Games Essay
Music In Video Games
Throughout the history of the video game industry, there has been many changes concerning music in video games. Music in video games progressed
greatly within the life of the industry from 1972 to the present. These progressions can be seen as improvements in quality which includes an increase
in the number of output channels, an increase in song length, a great improvement in the quality of timbres, and also a general shift from non–
programmatic music to programmatic music which fits a game. If one takes a close look, one can see that all of these improvements are either directly
or indirectly resulting from improvements in the technology which is used to produce video game music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ARAM is a memory storage area which performs two main functions. The first of its functions is to store data concerning the layout of a song.
This data contains information such as which voices will be played at what time, specifications concerning a song's rhythm, dynamics and structure, and
any other information which is used by the sound CPU when it produces sounds.
When compared to music in the mainstream musical industry, the ARAM can be seen as the musical score which musicians read in order to gain the
information to play a song. Since the ARAM stores a song's structure, increasing the size of the ARAM will obviously have a profound effect on the
overall length and the variations in structure of a particular song. The result is that an increase in
ARAM will yield songs which are longer and contain more variations within its structure. These changes are particularly important in video games
since "a monotonous melody which repeats every few seconds can lead to boredom and even frustration in a player."1 Therefore, video
game programmers are now becoming more and more aware that programming long varying songs can keep a player from becoming bored and switch
to another game. Thus, this partially increases a player's liking of a particular game.
The other function of the ARAM is to store information which defines the timbres in a song. Sound, like many other things which occur in nature,
actually consists of waves which travel through a medium

The Function Of The Song Beijing Welcomes You By Ke Zhaolei
Music can be found everywhere in our world and has many different functions. Since music is universal it is important to understand the way describe
music using terms such as timbre, pitch, rhythm and dynamics as well as keeping in mind the social, cultural and political roles that music falls into.
The song "Beijing Welcomes You" is a chinese song composed by Ke Zhaolei for the 2008 Beijing olympics and features many different artists from
Asia. This recorded piece of music is a representation of modern day chinese music as well as the incorporation of the Beijing culture.
In the song "Beijing Welcomes You", there is a clear distinction that the song is sung by both female and male artists based on the vocal timbre of the
song. The vocal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pattern of the song has a beat that repeats itself at a fixed rate. In addition to the fixed rate, the song has an accent where one beat is emphasized
and this can be heard by the increased volume of that specific note. Towards the end of the song, the melodic contour of the song can be described as
a descending melodic contour as the pitches descend from high to low. This is done by the artist holding out their voices for a lengthened amount of
time. Furthermore, the phonic structure of this piece can be described as a monophonic piece. Monophony means that the performers play the same
pitches with the same rhythms. Even though the song incompasses a wide varitey of instruments, the rhythm of the song stays relatively the same
Another important aspect of the song is the dynamics. The beginning of the song can be classified as a crescendo because of the increased musical
sound from the instruments, however, towards the end there is a decrescendo as the volume falls off and the artists holds on and extends the last note.
The crescendo in the beginning of the song is interesting to note because the song starts off acapella and gradually the volume begins to increase when
the first musical instrument comes into play. Last but not least, this piece of music contains a lot of repetition. The vocal repetition of the songs title

Classical Music Observations
Most everyone will agree that music is enjoyed by everyone. However, not everyone likes the same types of music. The good thing is, music has the
ability to provide a vast variety of sounds that everyone can appreciate in some form or fashion. I attended the Festival Fanfare Classical Music
Concert on June 14, 2016, in Hattiesburg, MS. This was the first time that I ever attended a classical music event. Not knowing if I particularly liked
classical music, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed listening to the three instruments being played: the trumpet, the piano, and the organ.
The first instrument that was played was the trumpet, by Ryan Anthony. Right away, I noticed the bright timbre and allegrotempo it possessed. Next

I Am At The David Owsley Museum
Have you ever had a piece of music that causes a picture or painting to come to life? When I was at the David Owsley Museum I was looking at art
pieces that had more of a realistic feel and trying to find one that was interesting to me. The Rapids, Sister Island, Niagara by William Morris Hunt
caught my attention by just looking at it, and then I listened to Variation XI "G.R.S." by Edward Elgar, and I really enjoyed the two pieces of art
placed together. There were three things that caught my attention to the music and I noticed that these things we discussed in art connected directly to
the ideas from music. The first thing that was intriguing to me was the tone color. Next, the dynamic was interesting and related to the way the painting

The yellow was more present, because it was very upbeat and seemed like something severe was going to happen. It is unique to me that the
picture focuses on a lot of greens and blues, showing that these two combine together to make the art piece seem more intense. This tone color was
also bright and put off some very extreme force. I also believe that Variation XI "G.R.S." gave off a mood of energy. I got this feeling because it
has a very fast tempo and the quick pace of the tone created a different picture in my mind. The tone color of the song helped to implicate a new
meaning behind The Rapids, Sister Island, Niagara. The dynamic of the song also changed my mood at certain points. Sometimes the pitch would
last for a really long time and that to me emphasized the intensity that was taking place within the picture. It even created the idea to me that the
painting was an actual waterfall that was moving. When a painting does this, it is a realistic representational painting which means it exhibits a
high degree of verisimilitude, or life likeness. Then when the pitch would be lower and last for a shorter period of time I did not really know what I
was supposed to be expecting out of it. I was listening to the song and was waiting to see what was going to come after the lower pitch sound at the
certain time in Variation XI "G.R.S.". I think that the duration of the music piece caused the painting to come alive and leave more of a

Tone Color Research Paper
Have you ever heard a flute and an oboe play in an orchestra? They sound extremely different from one another even when they are playing a tone at
the same frequency and for the same duration of time. This is called known as tone color, or timbre. "Tone color (timbre) is defined as the quality that
distinguishes one musical instrument from another"(Book). Tone color is impacted by different components, but the most common is the material in
which the instrument is crafted (Source 1). Some instruments are made of wood or metal, also instruments are made up of several different types of
materials which can also affect the tone color. String instruments, such as a guitar and violin, make their musical sounds when the musician either

"The air makes the vocal cords vibrate and the singers' lungs, throat, mouth, and nose come in to play to produce the desired sound. The pitch of the
tone varies with the tension of the vocal cords, the tighter they are, the higher the pitch" (3Book). Vocal classifications for women are soprano,
mezzo–soprano, and alto (3Book). The men's vocal classifications are tenor, baritone, and bass (3Book). Depending on the vocal classification a
singer has would determine which ensemble group they would be in. "According to Princeton University, a musical ensemble is 'a group of two or
more musicians who perform instrumental or vocal music'"(Source 2). There are multiple ensemble groups, all of which, expect for singing, come
from the five musical instrument families listed in the previous paragraph. Orchestra, band or wind, chorus/choir, jazz band, vocal jazz, soloist, piano

Henry Purcell 's Dido And Aeneas
I went to go see a college production of Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at a recital hall at Meredith College. The hall was almost full, but it was
not huge auditorium or stage. The stage was brightly lit and there were no light changes during the performance. The audience ranged in ages, so it
was family event. Many had flowers, so some of the audience was families supporting those performing. Most people seemed engaged in the
performance, especially when performers entered from the back of hall because it would catch their attention. There were two parts of the concert;
selected Arias, and the opera. The opera singers in the first part of the show sung with piano accompaniment, and the opera was sung with a piano
accompaniment as well, but also was accompanied by a string ensemble. The first two Arias and the Opera were composed from the Baroque
period. Two of the Arias were composed by Mozart. The last three selected Arias were from the Romantic period. While operas stemmed from the
Baroque period, they continued and still continue to be composed. The first work was an Aria, Barbarina's aria from Le Nozze di Fiagro by
Wolfgang A. Mozart. The song was sung by a high pitched soprano. A part of an aspect of the melody, a succession of notes arranged in recognizable
unit, was its range. It had a wide range because the notes often went up and down, almost creating a disjunct melody, larger intervals with
nonconsecutive pitches, but it could still be recognizable so it had

The Importance Of Music And Language
Music and language share a commonality; the same way phrases are structured in music, can be seen when thoughts are structured in sentences of
different languages. Music plays a role in memory, auditory attention, and different structures of language, such as the syntax and phonemes, which can
improve on reading and writing skills. Bidelman et al. has shown that when it comes to music and language, speech pitch processing can differ between
musicians and non–musicians, where there are evidence that music can show sensitivity to the pitch sound toward musicians. It can also depend on
musicians who speak foreign languages, which will focus on the influence of domain–specific experience on the encoding of pitch. It can also depend
on musical expertise. Rochette et al. has used musical lessons on deaf children to test if musical education plays a factor on them, since other studies
have shown that music being able to use auditory perception, auditory cognition, and phonetic discrimination. The results showed that those who were
trained acquired the skills more than those who weren't and is an excellent strategy for increasing linguistic processing. On the emotional side, Ma and
Thompson wanted to show that acoustic environments, such as sounds from human actions, animal calls, etc. can change human emotions. The
hypothesis of music and speech being closely related brought the idea of the "musical protolanguage hypothesis," that songlike communication was
used in courtship and

Concert Reflection
The concert I attended was called the Brooke Howard, Senior Clarinet Recital on November the 3rd at the Blankenship Recital Hall. The
performances consisted of the clarinet, piano, djembe, drum, and a quartet. There were five pieces performed, four of the pieces were classical with
one having a more tribal beat with the djembe. The first piece was titled Allegro Appassionato, op 43 written by Camille Saint–Saens. The piece started
was started by the piano playing the melody. Then the clarinet accompanied the piano creating a homophonic texture. The timbre of the clarinet was
very distinct over the piano. They continued playing then briefly there was a pause adding to the rhythm of the piece. Then the clarinet started to play
solo creating a monophonic texture. The piano started to play again taking over the melody, with the clarinet accompanying. During this there was a
distinct repetition of notes playing over and over by the clarinet. The texture created was homophonic as the piano and clarinet played in harmony.
Then the texture switched to monophonic as the piano and clarinet went back and forth playing the melody solo. The piece ended with the piano and
clarinet playing the same note, with the pianist letting the note fade out. The second piece was titled Lied written by Francios Rasse. The piece started
with the piano playing the melody then the clarinet accompanied creating a homophonic texture. Then the piano and clarinet switched playing back

This type of configuration is widely used in active filtering applications. A shunt APF has a controllable voltage or current source. Fig. 3.4
demonstrates principal configuration of a voltage source inverter based APF which the most common type of shunt APF today. It is based on the
principle of injection of harmonic current equivalent to the distorted current waveform, thus eliminating the original distorted current. This is

(ii) Series APF
Basic principle of this type of configuration is isolation of harmonics in between nonlinear load and source. The basic configuration is similar with
shunt APF, except that interfacing inductor is replaced by an interfacingtransformer, where the injection of harmonic voltage occurs. It is otherwise
known as a harmonic isolator, which offers zero impedance to the fundamental and infinite impedance to the harmonic frequency components. Fig. 3.5

Bohemian Rhapsody Essay
The song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen is composed of many intricate musical events ranging from the fluctuation of harmonies to the use of
different forms of music. In 1974, Queen created this song in order to show the world their true talent through an unorthodox song that no one really
expected. Today, the song is iconic, but the song did not reach its full stride in contemporary society until it appeared on the soundtrack of the 1990s
movie Wayne's World. Through its mixture of old music such as the operatics and the relatively modern music of vibrant rock, "
Bohemian Rhapsody"
catapulted Queen into stardom.
At 0:04, the song opens into a soft chorus of all of the band members singing "Is this the real life...". The mixture of the operatics, the soft, consonant
harmony and the lyrics all point towards a somewhat heavenly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this point in the song, the sound from the guitar is almost synonymous to the lyrics of the song so it is almost like Mercury is still singing. This
is not only important for the development of the song but it is also important for making the song a piece of its time. In the 70s, nearly every rock
song had a guitar solo so it is important to this song for its historical relevance.
At 3:08, the song shifts again out of slow rock and into an almost opera, broadway–musical–like form. The tempo of the song speeds up, and the timbre
of Mercury's voice turns into a form where he seems to just be angrily talking to the listeners. This shift is important because it symbolizes the change
from his sadness of his actions and into his want to fight for forgiveness.
At 3:39, the vocals of Freddie Mercury are soft but are they negated by the harsh vocals of the rest of the group. They are essentially creating polar
opposites with the high and low battling and then converging around the end. The abrupt shifting between consonant and dissonant creates a very

Thus, this partially increases a player's liking of a particular game. The other function of the ARAM is to store information which defines the timbres in
a song. Sound, like many other things which occur in nature, actually consists of waves which travel through a medium and then hit our eardrums,
causing them to vibrate and sending messages to our brain which is interpreted as sounds. Like all the other waves in nature, sound waves can be
mathematically defined as a set of equations. Mathematical equations are exactly the way in which a video game system stores its sounds. The sound
wave equations are used to define the timbres in a song. Through a process called frequency modulation synthesis (FM synthesis), programmers
define timbre by creating and working with wave equations from scratch. Similarly to the increase in the length of a song, an increased ARAM can
also be used to store longer wave equations which more precisely define a timbre in a song. Better defined waves mean an improvement in timbre
which can bring a further sense of programmaticism to a song. This is true because of the fact that different instruments can be used to effectively
portray certain emotions and situations.
For example, a bassoon is often used to set a comical mood while an airy and thin sound such as a flute can be used to set a mood of fear and horror.
Again this increase in the sense of the programmatic nature of songs helps to draw a player deeper into

Music Analysis: West Side Story
We hear music, sing music, play music, and dance to music. Music is another way for us to express our feelings beside the words. There are ten
elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, texture, form, pitch, dynamic, articulation, and lyrics; these also the broad definition of the
entire realm of the theory of music and how it is made. At the physical level there are four significant wave patterns, which are defined as frequency,
amplitude, duration and timbre (Hast et al. 2009, pp. 7–8). The piece of work that I have chosen to analyze the concepts is a song called "America",
which is a clip from movie West Side Story.

five six, and ONE two THREE four FIVE six. It would be almost impossible to play this song in the correct style without thinking of these two
pulse groupings. This is a nice way of showing that 3/4 is present in some sense, but that 6/8 is privileged as the real, underlying meter. ("Real" and
"underlying" are metaphors, of course.) Assume the song were in "3/4 (6/8)," instead of "6/8 (3/4)", it would sound much different: the hemiola would
apply not to "(A)–mer–ic–a," but to "I like to be in..." This would put the hemiola's extra energy in the wrong place and emphasis the wrong beat. Of
course, if the composer tries changing the whole song to 3/4, making the hemiola

This demonstrates and embodies how Phil Spector, the producer and creator of the Wall of Sound, held power over the Crystals. It is said that in
producing the song, Spector chose specific instruments so that he could layer them in a way that would "overshadow the voices...that just stopped
short of being busy." When listening to the track, Uptown, one is able to notice that the Crystals seem to be trying to sing over the musical
instrumentations. After the production of Uptown, a former Crystal member mentioned that Spector would barely let them take part in the
production process. Dee Dee Kennibrew states, "From "Uptown" on he would bring in tracks, not finished, but enough for you to put your own
part down, so he would do everything in segments, so I could not tell you how or what he kept of ours "(History of Rock). Their success was
dimmed by Phil Spector. He expressed that in producing music, he was focusing on the sound, "I was looking for a sound, a sound so strong that if
the material was not the greatest, the sound would carry the record" (Wikipedia). His goal was to make "little symphonies for the kids", rather than
genuinely caring for the success of his artists. As LaLa Brooks said, "He thought so much of himself that he didn't want any of his artists to be

The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is a 1945 musical composition by Benjamin Britten with a subtitle Variations and Fugue on a Theme of
Purcell. The theme is first stated by the full orchestra and then restated by different sections of the orchestra (in order, woodwinds, brass, strings, and
percussion) before being stated again by the full orchestra. In so doing, Britten makes clear the different timbres of the different sections of the
orchestra. It is a representative of Classical Eastern European style,

Through strict rules of imitation all of this is made possible. In Benjamin Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra the fugal subject, main
theme of the fugue, is presented first by the piccolo. The subject is in an Allegro molto tempo, B minor, and is 8 bars long. Following the subject is the
answer performed the remaining instruments of the orchestra in the same order as the variations– from highest ranging instruments to lowest from the
woodwinds, strings, brass, and concludes with the percussion. The subject has a descending sequence similar to the original Purcell theme. In
addition, Song of Schopsko follows fugal rules through the use of imitation. What could be said to be a subject is presented in the lead alto's voice;
which is then followed by an answer to the subject in strict imitation by the remaining members of the Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female
Vocal Choir. The piccolo part that is presented at the ninth bar of the fugue is presented enough to be considered the counter–subject. The playing of
this original melody is the countersubject, which is played in response and at the same time as the imitation occurring in the answer. After this has
been performed the exposition of the piece has come to a conclusion In Song of Schopsko, the countersubject is presented again by the lead tenor
vocalist who sings the counter

Mid-Year Band Concert
On February 25, 2016, I was able to see the Mid–Year Band Concert in the PAC. The pieces I have chosen to review were performed by the Varsity,
Symphonic II and Symphonic I Bands and conducted by Mr. Bailey and Mr. Hillhouse. "King Cotton," "Amparito Roca," and "Valdres" were among
my favorites in the program and are all coincidentally, marches. To start with, the Varsity Band performed a royal march called "King Cotton" by Karl
King. It reminded me of a Sousa–type piece due to the recurring melody and march style. As the piece began, the band played tutti but had a mediocre
balance due to the woodwind instruments, particularly the clarinets, standing out from the others. Their reedy timbre and higher pitch than the rest of

Hillhouse. It was a Norwegian march named "Valdres" by Robert Jaeger. The piece begins with the trumpets and snare drum with a mezzo piano
dynamic. The trumpet repeats the same legato phrase of what seems to be eighth note, dotted quarter, eighth note, eighth note, eighth note then a whole
note. Each time this was played by the brass instrument, it ascended by a half step. I personally liked this rhythm because it felt slower and more
relaxed than the previous marches. Shortly after, the clarinets join in and layered the trumpet and snare. These woodwinds added a airy timbre to
the slower piece and therefore, the dynamics changed from lento to vivace. Soon, all woodwinds, brass and percussion joined into the repeating
melody adding a fuller feeling to the march. Shortly, the band crescendoed into a short rest. Then, the french horns to play piano, giving a darker
tone and a brassy timbre. During this, a trumpet played a short fanfare that was very well played with use of quieter, legato dynamics to resemble the
rest of the brass but still be more prominent with an unequal balance. The trumpet also had a pattern of an ascending then descending scale. Together
the brass reminded me of the fullness and darkness of a serene forest or peaceful voyage. Perhaps resembling a sail through a fjord due to the march

The Four Seasons
What is your favorite season of the year? Some people enjoy the pleasant view of the white, snow, covered ground and snuggling up with the person
they love next to the warm, relaxing fire. Others enjoy the beautiful scenery of the leaves on the trees starting to change their colors, letting us all
know that autumn is upon us. The Four Seasons, published in 1725, was composed by the remarkable Antonio Vivaldi, who was a Venice native and
taught violin and viola to orphaned girls at the Conservatorio dell'Ospedale della Pieta. According to "The Enjoyment of Music," by Forney,
Dell'Antonio, and Machlis, Antonio Vivaldi "played a leading part in the history of theconcerto" (p.124) which we can recognize after listening to one
of his best known pieces, The Four Seasons. The first concerto of the piece, Spring, shows us the extravagant use of word painting that Vivaldi uses to
express the emotions and scenery of the season. Let's dig deeper into this remarkable concerto, discussing three different musical elements ... Show

has a specific genre. Today, we recognize the popular genres as rock, country, hip hop, and so on. Back in the Baroque era, one popular genre was
the "programmatic concerto" which was also known as program music. Program music is defined in "The Enjoyment of Music" as a type of music
that is portrayed through either literally or pictorial associations. In Spring, there is a poem, written possibly by Vivaldi himself, that goes along with
the instrumental music that details the different aspects of that season. In the first movement of Spring, the poem reads "Joyful spring has arrived, the
birds greet it with their cheerful song, and the brooks in the gentle breezes flow with a sweet murmur..." (p.125). While reading the poem and listening
to the music that accompanies it, you will find that the words and music go hand in hand with each other which will be discussed in the next paragraph

I Attended The 50th Anniversary Celebration Of Music At Ut...
On the 4th of December in the year 2015, I attended the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Music at UT Dallas. While there were many notable
pieces, the centerpiece, which I will focus on, was a violin and orchestra with an accordion solo called The Ox on the Roof. Originally Le boeuf sur
le toit in its native French, the musical was composed by a Frenchman of Jewish roots by the name of Darius Milhaud in 1920. The musical played on
this December night was performed under the supervision of Director Robert Xavier RodrГguez. While there were many qualities of various shades in
this musical, the shifting timbre, the keen rhythm, and the perpetual notes of harmony were the most notable components to me as they helped
represent a dual sense of both proud, unchanging timelessness and boisterous, dynamic nonce that gave a sense of life itself in all its glory. The timbre,
or tone, was the most apparent quality of the musical. The timbre was a mix of both soft and rough tones. That is, the music appeared to be a mix of
various genera. It often jumped between the jaunty and loud music that seemed to be Latin folk music and soft, austere sounds that seemed to be
European classical or Romantic. This timbre was interspersed by a rhythms. This was the very transition between the two styles of music. Originally a
loud and vibrant melody, it then slowly grew more subdued till all that remained was a remnant of its previous volume. Then the music subtly shifted

Car Radio Musical Analysis Essay
The song I choose for this deep analysis is Car Radio by Twenty–One Pilots. I recognized three parts in this song, meaning it has a ternary form. This
analysis is divided into sections, A B A'. Each section will explain the usage of instruments, dynamics, tempo, texture, and harmony. In the first section,
A, I recognized the usage of a piano, synthesizers, and a drum set. Different parts of the drumset, like the cymbals and the bass drum, are playing at a
pianissimo and slowly crescendo up to a mezzo piano. In the music, the drum set plays a big role in the leaps it presents when it starts creating a beat.
The synthesizers create different sounds which add to the music of the song. The sounds created sound, out of this world when they crescendo and
decrescendo in section A. The last instrument plays a big part as the harmony. The piano is the harmony which is played at a dynamic of piano and
mezzo piano. Although the tempo is Allegro, this part of the music is calm and happy, making... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The usage of synthesizers and the drum–set play a big role in this part of the song. The timbre here is not calm anymore, but fanciful and bright. The
rhythm here is upbeat and makes listeners just want to move their feet. Here the usage of synthesizers become the melody with the piano accompanied
as the harmony, making this rising action, homophonic. The singer doesn't sing much here, but when he does, this makes this section, become
polyphonic, creating two melodies accompanied with one harmony. The singer's voice goes from baritone to tenor, singing in a major key. The
dynamics here went from piano to forte and then suddenly to fortissimo, creating leaps in section B. These leaps creates an incomplete Cadence,
making listeners want more. The artist sets up an expectation for us, that we as listeners never receive due to this incomplete

The Impacts Of Classical Music In The 20th Century...
The twentieth century music composition gave way to more incorporation to music as it was known. It was the time when musical rules could be
reinvented, altered and in some cases completely ignored (Hansen, et al 154). This classical music was described by many different works such as,
orchestral, solos, operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music, and many others (Hansen, et al 168). As stated by Hansen, et al, "Some musical styles
within the modernist movement were impressionism, serialism, minimalism, electronic music, experimental music, and change music (160). All the
musical styles were influenced through jazz but it was a moment of breakthrough for all the composers since all rules were ignored. Aaron Copland and
Benjamin Britten were two composers of that century that shaped the way twentieth century classical music was viewed. The different elements of
classical musical such as melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, timbre, and form are what characterized the twentieth century classical music. First,
twentieth century music had taken a different approach than earlier music eras. There were varieties of differences which started from the instruments
and the sounds that it produced to the complexity of the textures. The composers used new approaches and ideas to their compositions and broke many
rules. The composers used the instruments and electronics to push ideas of "serious" music into the mainstream (Hansen, et al 169). The twentieth
century was known for

Harry Potter Archetypes
Pop culture is defined as modern popular culture transmitted via mass media. With such a large sphere of influence, it should come as no surprise that
all of pop culture has an underlying basis in psychology. From archetypes in beloved books to heated political debates, psychology plays a crucial role
in shaping society's entertainment and passions.
Carl Jung's archetypes can be found in just about any story one reads. "The Hero","The Lover", "The Sage", etc. are all well known character bases
that are established in our stories from a very young age. However, they are particularly conspicuous in the Harry Potter series written by J.K.
Rowling. In Harry Potter, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are shining examples of three of Jung's archetypes. "The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Sing Joyfully Unto God: Music Analysis
I thoroughly enjoyed Sing Joyfully Unto God by Byrd, then Cello Suite No.1 in G major by Bach, next "Libiamo ne lieti calici" from La Traviata
by Verdi and finally Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. The piece by Byrd called Sing Joyfully Unto God was my favorite because of its rhythmic
quality which had a very smooth and flowing sound. The overall quality was very precise and easy to listen to, although at certain times it seemed to
be overwhelming it still managed to progress gracefully and steady. They each sang as a unified whole which made the structure of the piece very
balanced and delightful to hear. The orchestral timbres between Byrd(Renaissance choral work) and Verdi( Romantic Italianopera) differed variously

After carefully listening to each I could establish that both pieces had similar sound quality in terms of voices I could hear the Mezzo soprano and
Countertenor voices in both pieces which had a very similar melodic quality. The orchestral timbre helps contribute to the storytelling element in
Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf because the timbre helps us to distinguish each individual element in the story by giving it a human characteristic which
helps it to appear more profound and realistic to the viewers. Yes, the instruments definitely sound like the characters they are portraying because the
characters all have a very unique and distinct individual sound. The protagonist characters have a lighter and more flowy sound while the antagonist
character has a more frightening and chilling sound. My favorite character and instrument in the story was the wolf who was represented by the french
horns. The wolf is a very fearful and cunning animal large in size and very determined to get what he wants no matter how much damage he

Timbre Essay
3
Assignment 1 Timbre is what allows a listener to distinguish between two different sounds. It allows the listener to recognize the difference between
different songs, such as ABC (The Jackson 5) (1970), and Back in Black (AC/DC) (1980). It also enables the listener to decipher a variety of notes in a
piece of music, and even recognize individuals by the sound of their voice.
The Sound I chose the song Imagine (John Lennon) (1971) because of the powerful lyrics that hold so much meaning, and how relevant the lyrics
still are 40 years later. People will be able to relate to the piece for years to come, as Lennon paints a world which many dream of, but will never
achieve. The piece also has very strong timbre, and is a very recognizable piece ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many aspects of timbre in this piece, all which allow us to identify the song, and feel the emotion that Lennon is trying to convey. Different
types of timbre in this piece include voice, piano, drums, and violin. The piece begins with a solo piano, which sets the tone for the song. It introduces
the listener to the piece in a way that allows us to understand that the song will be slow, and ballad–like. The sounds of multiple violins playing at once,
as they do later in the piece, gives the listener a sense of unison, which is one of the main messages the piece is trying to convey.
Why Is It Meaningful? This piece is renowned for having a very deep meaning. Lennon describes this vast idea of a world without concepts that
separates the human population into distinct segregations, and brews a hate for each other. He discusses how the world would be a better place if

Baroque Tonality
Harmony, Tonality and Timbre before the Romantic Period (Classical Era)
Musical style, harmony and melody grew more and more complex during the Baroque period. As such, during the classical era there was an
emergence of a new style of music, the Classical style (Mostlywind.co.uk, 2015). The Classical musical style was characaterised by a simple, delicate
expression of music that was meant to please its listeners with a refined sound, as such, there was very little to no dissonance used in all pieces. The
melody during this time period was short and very defined, with only a few themes introduced per each piece. Rhythm was regular and due to the
complexity of the texture of music during the Baroque period, the texture of music was simple and

ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT– STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
Through ineffective manipulation of structure, timbre and melody, Victor Lopez's short version of Stairway to Heaven fails to convey the same mood
and effect on the listener as the original classic piece by Led Zeppelin.
Jimmy Page, lead guitarist of hard rock band Led Zeppelin, and composer of Stairway to Heaven, once said with reference to the album this piece was
released on, "My vocation is more in composition really than anything else – building up harmonies using the guitar, orchestrating the guitar like an
army, a guitar army". Victor Lopez's variation of Stairway to Heaven unsuccessfully attempts to capture the same style and mood, given its complete

The introduction starts with every instrument playing and an attempted take off of the chorus, contrasting the idea of one melody growing in Led
Zeppelin's version. The arranged variation begins in E flat major and modulates to D major. There is no clear melody evident at all throughout the
piece, as the number of instruments playing at similar volumes, makes it hard to determine. Ornamentation is also a key musical flourish in the
original, that lacks in Victor Lopez's version, as there is no guitar and therefore none of the brilliant guitar techniques mentioned above, to make the
music come alive and become more than just notes on a page.
The timbre or characteristic quality of sound displays a great difference when comparing the jazz arrangement of Stairway to Heaven to the original.
Jimmy Page manipulates his guitar as the main sound source with such brilliance, using a variety of methods such as pull offs, vibrato, hammer–ons,
bends and slides (see Figure 2). The guitar is the central instrument and is held responsible for the individuality and vividness of the piece as it holds
the majority of the melody, and in particular brings out the contrast during the bridge and solo (5:35). The entire piece depends on the guitar as it
continues to play throughout the whole song and is accountable for the most complex part, portraying the creativity and ingeniousness of Stairway to

Descriptive Essay On Summer And Winter
It's four o'clock on a rainy, autumn, Monday afternoon. I've chosen my location to be my room in my apartment at 2224 Blowing Rock Rd. The
window is always left open due to my admiration for the regular sounds that occur outside my building. This location makes me feel comfortable,
calm, and upbeat. Not only did I specifically pick out the place and time for this assignment I really aimed to write this while the weather was accenting
autumn, wet and windy. Nothing is more relaxing than a nice cup of coffee in the comforts of your own bed while the wind and rain serenade you. The
whole season of fall makes me feel warm and content. Thoreau wrote "The indescribable innocence and beneficence of Nature, ––– of the sun and wind
and rain, of summer and winter, ––– such health, such cheer, they afford forever! And such sympathy have they ever with our race, that all nature
would be affected, and the suns brightness fade, and the winds would sigh humanely, and the clouds rain tears, and the woods shed their leaves
and put on mourning in midsummer, if any man should ever for just a cause grieve" (Solitude, 110). Within the room itself, I can hear a few
distinct sounds around me. A faint melody of jazz can be heard on a radio in the corner. Music helps me focus on whatever work I have for the
night. Although I have turned the radio down in order to hear other sounds for this assignment, I can still hear small claps of a beat and an upbeat
squeak of some kind of horn. Attached to my curtains are a string of old bells. The wind is picking up today and every time it blows a small gust
through my window the curtain moves and the bells dance along it. They sound like tiny cow bells. The wind has also picked a fight with a small
candle on one of my tables. I can hear the flickers of the flame trying to stay lit as well as it possibly can. And of course, the most apparent sound in
the room is the tapping and clicking of my laptop keys as I write this. Outside of my window, there are several different layers of sound all unique to
each other. The first layer come from the immediate parking lot in front and the whole apartment complex itself. I can hear bustling neighbors all
around; faint laughs, doors shutting, cars

P'ansori is sung by a women who is of old age. The purpose of this piece, P'ansoni, is to let this woman cry her pains and anguishes out through her
screeching and singing. This is known as han, which means "great suffering and helplessness" that can appear in many ways. This woman chose to

the piece because it allows the focus of the listener to be on the woman's deep, hurting, musical expressions. The singer's pitch is inconsistent and

There are vocal harmonizations, a virtuosic accordion, small brass ensemble, drum set, and rub board all combined to create the zydeco music Queen
Ida Guillory is going for. All of these instruments play a swung 4/4 pattern. The drum set is always playing a swung 4/4 jazz–influenced beat, while
the wash board will play swung triplets or eighth notes. The timbre of the wash board is metallic and dry. The player uses short and choppy strokes,
which adds nicely to making this piece feel like it is indeed swung. The band members plays the washboard at a mezzo–piano dynamic. The brass
ensemble will play long tones, which lays underneath Guillory's singing, acting as a harmony. Aside from the last note of the piece, which is
fortissimo, they play at a mezzo–forte dynamic. This allows the listener to hear the combination of Guillory's melody and their own harmony. The
timbre of Guillory is nasally, but has plenty of depth to each note that he sings. This "nasally depth" that he gives his listener makes the melody
have a relaxed mood to it, and the song as a whole is on the back of the beat. He is always at a forte dynamic, because he has the most interesting
part for the entire piece. During the song, if Guillory wants to escape the relaxed feeling of his tune, he will make certain phrases pop out to the
listener by adding a crash cymbal behind certain words and will personally give the words more air for an

Ethnography of Performance Essay
Ethnography of Performance
During a musical performance many elements to be looked are not easily recognized by the average critic. A musical performance has multiple
interactions taking place between the music, text, performers, audience, and space that all can contribute to a great performance. Overwhelming
majority of the audience does not realize so much can be looked at during a single performance. At a performance by the University of Maryland

During the performance there were many overtones and one fundamental tone, which deals with the timbre and tone quality. "The overtones produce
additional sounds that enable us to distinguish between different instruments even when they are sounding the same pitch"(Kaemmer:60). The tone
quality of the performance was very good. The music sounded evenly distributed and it was very easy to hear the sounds of the various instruments.
The band played two songs and one song had a slow rhythm and the other had a faster rhythm. Rhythm means more than a basic beat
(Kaemmer:65). During the performance there was a steady rhythm. Also during the performance there was a section of the song that sounded
different and after about ten seconds the song goes back to its previous sound. That sound was a melody. Melodies are combination of pitches and
rhythm patterns that produce a distinctive line of sound (Kaemmer:62). When the band first began to play the song started in a low tone and the
music began to escalate and it reached a climax where the loudness of the performance was at its peak. Once at its peak the music began to get
softer and lower. This is an example of a linear form of the performance. Linear form means a performance having a definite beginning and ending.
The overall musical sound of the performance was delightful and pleasing to the ears. The context of a musical performance is another key part of any

Debussy's Influence In Classical Music
Classical music in the twentieth century was marked by an avoidance of Common Practice Period traditions. At the same time, classical music in the
twentieth century represented a blending of old ideas with new practices. These two beliefs tended to clash with one another, but this competition
allowed for a great leap forward in musical evolution. Three artists were responsible for that great leap forward. Debussy sparked an interest in tonality,
texture and timbre which others later emulated. Stravinsky innovated through his expansion of Russian idioms, and influence in neoclassicist music.

Jordan Peele Background Music
Ever stopped to notice that in moves the key component of bringing suspense is the background music? Or have you ever realized that when you watch
something without sound your reaction to it is automatically different? That's simply because no one ever becomes aware of how the background
music gives scenes simulation and reality. Throughout the intense clip of Get out by Jordan Peele, we can distinguish different dynamics, texture, and
timbre which gives the clip the mood. In the beginning of the clip no music is playing and the audience is under the impression that Chris, the main
character, is about to be used for a brain transplant. The first dynamic which occurs at 48 seconds, gives the scene more of a serious and nervous
mood because it is at mezzo forte. It starts off as medium volume and grows to be louder the deeper we go into the scene. The same also occurs
after he has killed off the father's son and now we see the father is concerned and starts to notice. However, when it comes to the father's turn to die at

that it comes out of nowhere. Imagine watching a scene and a climax is approaching, there is no music and no sound, and as soon as climax reaches,
music finishes it off with the cherry on top. I am willing to bet those types of simulations do not occur when strong homophonic, thick textures, within

There was a return to a monophonic texture for the cello and the dynamics became pianissimo. Since this movement's form was ostinato, I heard short
melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns repeated. This piece was long, at twelve minutes, and at one point I stopped taking notes, in awe of what I
was hearing. The entire piece felt symmetrical to me and was sing able throughout. Beethoven's Sonata 3, Opus 69 nears a close with a texture that
was heterophonic, dynamics that go from forte to piano and a bright tone color for cello and piano. The melody remained conjunct with a contour that
was wavelike, by ascending and descending, especially for the piano. The tempo returned to allegro throughout this piece and ended with the dynamics
returning to forte and the final cadence as the harmony resolved in consonance. The second movement of Beethoven's Sonata in A Major, Opus 69 was
Scherzo: Allegro molto and began with Jordan–Anders playing the opening notes of the melody in a narrow range with a melodic movement that was

soulful and vibrant, where any door of possibility became obtainable. "In The Mood" was a piece by Joe Garland composed in the 1930's during the
swing era. The iconic Jazz number had been arranged by many artists; however, it was not until Glenn Miller orchestrated this piece so perceptively
that "In The Mood" became so well renowned. It was in 1939 when Miller seamlessly altered the Jazz piece that "In The Mood" was sent to number 1

emotion to classify people–music can even determine how we might classify someone. Classification by definition is the act or classifying something

Dying Swan Analysis
The composition called The Swan performed by Yo–Yo Ma, the poem called The Dying Swan by Alfred Lord Tennyson, and the ballet of Le Cygne
(The Swan) by Anna Pavlova connected to each other clearly and meaningfully by describing how The Swan's experience connects to human being's
life cycle. The compositions musical elements connect to the poem because it starts with a depressing and miserable sound as how the poem starts in
the first stanza. Then, the composition gives an inspiring emotion to the listener as how the poem gives inspiration to the reader. Furthermore, the
composition also connects to the ballet because it follows the rhythm and melody of the composition by creating a dance that expresses an aching
heart over people dying, peace of the deceased, and it inspired people to accept death as the dying swan accepted its own death. The ballerina shifted
her speed with the tempo of the music symbolizing the meaning and feeling of the poem. The composer's choices were effective in creating such a
dramatic moment because the composition, ballet, and poem flew along as they instilled a mournful and content joy causing a death confronting
inspiration. The instrumentation in The Swan composition is a violincello that was transcribed by the harp and viola, and the tempo is played both
slowly and quickly. The cello is the baritone of the strings, which creates a melodious tone both deep and dulcet. Furthermore, the other instruments
that were played in the background were the harp and violas, which are the accompaniments of the cello's solo. The harp has a ringlike sharp tone
and the viola provides a lower pitch that has a rich, complete tone. The harp and the viola play a harmony, timbre, and rhythm for the cello's solo.
Additionally, cellos are usually used to compose classical music, which probably influenced the composer to use a cello because it will connect
better to The Dying Swan poem. The cello created a deeply inspirational sound that other instruments would of probably have failed to produce.
Moreover, the tempo of the composition starts off by playing slowly, to give a serious or solemn feeling because the poem starts off by giving a vivid
depressed feeling to the reader. Then, in some parts of the

An in-Depth Analysis of the Use of Specific Musical...
The Romantic Era was a period of great change and emancipation. It moved away from strict laws by allowing artistic freedom, experimentation and
creativity. Romantic music evolved from ideas established in earlier periods, such as the classical period, and went further through the use of
expression and passion. New musical concepts evolved due to current trends and the music was deeply personal and nationalistic. Musical concepts
including pitch, tone colour and dynamics and expressive techniques each express the style of the Romantic period in differing ways. These concepts
are exemplified through Nocturne and Valse, both by Chopin.
Nocturne and Valse are both emotionally expressionistic pieces typical of the romantic era, written by... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the Nocturne is played with legato articulation, this creates more freedom and expression. The Valse however, is played with Tempo Giusto. This
means it is much more strict as it must be played in exact time. This does not allow for variation, unlike the Nocturne, which is common with waltzes.
The smooth character of the Nocturne and Valse is also linked with the inclusion of sostenuto articulation. The loud pedal creates an overlapping effect,
which contributes to the nature of the piece.
The type of layer relationship shown in both the Nocturne and Valse is homophonic. They consist of a dominant melodic layer accompanied by
subordinate harmonic layers.
Many composers of this time, reached for extremely high or low sounds. This was in search of increased brilliance and depth in sound. Throughout
the Nocturne the broken chords in the bass span from relatively high to low pitch with the lowest note, an f, in bar 8 and the highest, an a#, in bar 37.
The treble experiences a similar type of pitch pattern, with notes ranging from mid pitch to high pitch, which can be seen in bars 30–37 of the piece.
Romantic composers revelled in rich and sensuous sound, using tone colour to obtain variety of mood and atmosphere. Never before had timbre been
so important. Composers sought new ways of blending and combining tone colours to achieve the most poignant and intense sound.
The Piano, the favourite instrument of the romantic age, was vastly

Ghost Town Dance Interpretation

  • 1. Ghost Town Dance Interpretation The three recordings that I chose are Adam Lambert's Ghost Town, Sully Erna from Godsmack's Voodoo, and Benjamin Burnley from Breaking Benjamin's Dairy of Jane. In Ghost Town, Adam Lambert's voice is very distinctive where he has a smooth, light, and velvety sound for a good portion of the song, however, during some portions, such as towards the ending, his timbre is very dark, rich, and full. Thought the entire song his timbre holds a somber feeling even when singing a considerably light. Sully Erna (the lead singer of Godsmack) during Voodoo has a very raspy, dark, and thin timber. Within the piece some parts are creamier than others, where it is slightly harsh. Through Voodoo Sully Erna's timbre can also be described as mellow and may sometimes be flat or lacking depth. Also I would describe the tone color as being darker rather than lighter. Benjamin Burnley's (the lead singer of Breaking Benjamin) timbre is more along the lines of being harsh, heavy, airy, and dark. During most of this song there are rare moments where his timbre can be perceived as being velvety but during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adam Lambert and Sully Erna can share the timbre description of being creamy and velvety. Both singers tend to favor the lower range of singing and tend to smoothly transition from one word to the other instead of jumping as Benjamin Burnley tends to do. Both Sully Erna and Benjamin Burnley, however, share the quality of tending to be more along the lines of an airy and harsh side of timbre quality. And Adam Lambert and Benjamin Burnley share the timbre quality of creating a somber feeling with the favoritism to the darker register as well as the natural feeling of ... • 2. The New York Classical Players Beethoven Encounters paper On Saturday December 5, 2015 I went to the New York Public Library Center for the Preforming Arts at Lincoln Center to view the performance called "Beethoven Encounters". The show was free and it was in the Bruno Walter Auditorium. The pieces being performed were "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 5" all four movements. This was followed by "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 1" all four movements of this. Which was then finished with "String Quartet Opus 18 no. 4" with all four movements again. The show began at 2:30 in the afternoon and went on for about an hour or so. The group presenting were the "The New York Classical Players". This group is a quartet. All four members are highly trained classical violinists who have all preformed multiple times in the past with "The New York Classical Players". The lead violinist was David Southorn who is the second most well trained person in this group. Danbi Um, the second violinist, is an Israeli violinist who mostly does solo work but she also is an extremely well experienced violinist. She has performed in both America and Israel doing shows in concert halls as well as on local television. The third, and most experienced violinist is Wei–Yang Andy Lin. He is a Taiwanese violinist who has been the teacher of at least one other member of this group. That member was David Southorn. Mister Lin is currently a faculty member at the Chinese Cultural Arts Institute in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The last member of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Crescendos In The Firebird Suite In both pieces of music, The Firebird Suite, by Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) and C–Jam Blues, by Duke Ellington, there are traces of dynamics and timbre, also known as tone color, throughout. Dynamics is defined as "degrees of loudness or softness in music," and timbre is defined as "quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another." Both pieces have repeated melodies, but The Firebird Suite shows the use of more crescendos and decrescendo, while C–Jam Blues uses improvisation, which is "music created at the same time it is performed." Each piece has things in common, and at the same time are two completely different compositions of music. In Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite, there is a varying use of crescendos and decrescendos. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Music In Video Games Essay Music In Video Games Throughout the history of the video game industry, there has been many changes concerning music in video games. Music in video games progressed greatly within the life of the industry from 1972 to the present. These progressions can be seen as improvements in quality which includes an increase in the number of output channels, an increase in song length, a great improvement in the quality of timbres, and also a general shift from non– programmatic music to programmatic music which fits a game. If one takes a close look, one can see that all of these improvements are either directly or indirectly resulting from improvements in the technology which is used to produce video game music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ARAM is a memory storage area which performs two main functions. The first of its functions is to store data concerning the layout of a song. This data contains information such as which voices will be played at what time, specifications concerning a song's rhythm, dynamics and structure, and any other information which is used by the sound CPU when it produces sounds. When compared to music in the mainstream musical industry, the ARAM can be seen as the musical score which musicians read in order to gain the information to play a song. Since the ARAM stores a song's structure, increasing the size of the ARAM will obviously have a profound effect on the overall length and the variations in structure of a particular song. The result is that an increase in ARAM will yield songs which are longer and contain more variations within its structure. These changes are particularly important in video games since "a monotonous melody which repeats every few seconds can lead to boredom and even frustration in a player."1 Therefore, video game programmers are now becoming more and more aware that programming long varying songs can keep a player from becoming bored and switch to another game. Thus, this partially increases a player's liking of a particular game. The other function of the ARAM is to store information which defines the timbres in a song. Sound, like many other things which occur in nature, actually consists of waves which travel through a medium ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Function Of The Song Beijing Welcomes You By Ke Zhaolei Music can be found everywhere in our world and has many different functions. Since music is universal it is important to understand the way describe music using terms such as timbre, pitch, rhythm and dynamics as well as keeping in mind the social, cultural and political roles that music falls into. The song "Beijing Welcomes You" is a chinese song composed by Ke Zhaolei for the 2008 Beijing olympics and features many different artists from Asia. This recorded piece of music is a representation of modern day chinese music as well as the incorporation of the Beijing culture. In the song "Beijing Welcomes You", there is a clear distinction that the song is sung by both female and male artists based on the vocal timbre of the song. The vocal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pattern of the song has a beat that repeats itself at a fixed rate. In addition to the fixed rate, the song has an accent where one beat is emphasized and this can be heard by the increased volume of that specific note. Towards the end of the song, the melodic contour of the song can be described as a descending melodic contour as the pitches descend from high to low. This is done by the artist holding out their voices for a lengthened amount of time. Furthermore, the phonic structure of this piece can be described as a monophonic piece. Monophony means that the performers play the same pitches with the same rhythms. Even though the song incompasses a wide varitey of instruments, the rhythm of the song stays relatively the same Another important aspect of the song is the dynamics. The beginning of the song can be classified as a crescendo because of the increased musical sound from the instruments, however, towards the end there is a decrescendo as the volume falls off and the artists holds on and extends the last note. The crescendo in the beginning of the song is interesting to note because the song starts off acapella and gradually the volume begins to increase when the first musical instrument comes into play. Last but not least, this piece of music contains a lot of repetition. The vocal repetition of the songs title serves as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Classical Music Observations Most everyone will agree that music is enjoyed by everyone. However, not everyone likes the same types of music. The good thing is, music has the ability to provide a vast variety of sounds that everyone can appreciate in some form or fashion. I attended the Festival Fanfare Classical Music Concert on June 14, 2016, in Hattiesburg, MS. This was the first time that I ever attended a classical music event. Not knowing if I particularly liked classical music, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed listening to the three instruments being played: the trumpet, the piano, and the organ. The first instrument that was played was the trumpet, by Ryan Anthony. Right away, I noticed the bright timbre and allegrotempo it possessed. Next ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. I Am At The David Owsley Museum Have you ever had a piece of music that causes a picture or painting to come to life? When I was at the David Owsley Museum I was looking at art pieces that had more of a realistic feel and trying to find one that was interesting to me. The Rapids, Sister Island, Niagara by William Morris Hunt caught my attention by just looking at it, and then I listened to Variation XI "G.R.S." by Edward Elgar, and I really enjoyed the two pieces of art placed together. There were three things that caught my attention to the music and I noticed that these things we discussed in art connected directly to the ideas from music. The first thing that was intriguing to me was the tone color. Next, the dynamic was interesting and related to the way the painting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The yellow was more present, because it was very upbeat and seemed like something severe was going to happen. It is unique to me that the picture focuses on a lot of greens and blues, showing that these two combine together to make the art piece seem more intense. This tone color was also bright and put off some very extreme force. I also believe that Variation XI "G.R.S." gave off a mood of energy. I got this feeling because it has a very fast tempo and the quick pace of the tone created a different picture in my mind. The tone color of the song helped to implicate a new meaning behind The Rapids, Sister Island, Niagara. The dynamic of the song also changed my mood at certain points. Sometimes the pitch would last for a really long time and that to me emphasized the intensity that was taking place within the picture. It even created the idea to me that the painting was an actual waterfall that was moving. When a painting does this, it is a realistic representational painting which means it exhibits a high degree of verisimilitude, or life likeness. Then when the pitch would be lower and last for a shorter period of time I did not really know what I was supposed to be expecting out of it. I was listening to the song and was waiting to see what was going to come after the lower pitch sound at the certain time in Variation XI "G.R.S.". I think that the duration of the music piece caused the painting to come alive and leave more of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Tone Color Research Paper Have you ever heard a flute and an oboe play in an orchestra? They sound extremely different from one another even when they are playing a tone at the same frequency and for the same duration of time. This is called known as tone color, or timbre. "Tone color (timbre) is defined as the quality that distinguishes one musical instrument from another"(Book). Tone color is impacted by different components, but the most common is the material in which the instrument is crafted (Source 1). Some instruments are made of wood or metal, also instruments are made up of several different types of materials which can also affect the tone color. The men's vocal classifications are tenor, baritone, and bass (3Book). Depending on the vocal classification a singer has would determine which ensemble group they would be in. There are multiple ensemble groups, all of which, expect for singing, come from the five musical instrument families listed in the previous paragraph. • 9. Henry Purcell 's Dido And Aeneas I went to go see a college production of Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at a recital hall at Meredith College. The hall was almost full, but it was not huge auditorium or stage. The stage was brightly lit and there were no light changes during the performance. The audience ranged in ages, so it was family event. Many had flowers, so some of the audience was families supporting those performing. Most people seemed engaged in the performance, especially when performers entered from the back of hall because it would catch their attention. There were two parts of the concert; selected Arias, and the opera. The opera singers in the first part of the show sung with piano accompaniment, and the opera was sung with a piano accompaniment as well, but also was accompanied by a string ensemble. The first two Arias and the Opera were composed from the Baroque period. Two of the Arias were composed by Mozart. The last three selected Arias were from the Romantic period. While operas stemmed from the Baroque period, they continued and still continue to be composed. The first work was an Aria, Barbarina's aria from Le Nozze di Fiagro by Wolfgang A. Mozart. The song was sung by a high pitched soprano. A part of an aspect of the melody, a succession of notes arranged in recognizable unit, was its range. It had a wide range because the notes often went up and down, almost creating a disjunct melody, larger intervals with nonconsecutive pitches, but it could still be recognizable so it had ... • 10. The Importance Of Music And Language Music and language share a commonality; the same way phrases are structured in music, can be seen when thoughts are structured in sentences of different languages. Music plays a role in memory, auditory attention, and different structures of language, such as the syntax and phonemes, which can improve on reading and writing skills. Bidelman et al. has shown that when it comes to music and language, speech pitch processing can differ between musicians and non–musicians, where there are evidence that music can show sensitivity to the pitch sound toward musicians. It can also depend on musicians who speak foreign languages, which will focus on the influence of domain–specific experience on the encoding of pitch. It can also depend on musical expertise. Rochette et al. has used musical lessons on deaf children to test if musical education plays a factor on them, since other studies have shown that music being able to use auditory perception, auditory cognition, and phonetic discrimination. The results showed that those who were trained acquired the skills more than those who weren't and is an excellent strategy for increasing linguistic processing. On the emotional side, Ma and Thompson wanted to show that acoustic environments, such as sounds from human actions, animal calls, etc. can change human emotions. The hypothesis of music and speech being closely related brought the idea of the "musical protolanguage hypothesis," that songlike communication was used in courtship and ... The performances consisted of the clarinet, piano, djembe, drum, and a quartet. There were five pieces performed, four of the pieces were classical with one having a more tribal beat with the djembe. The first piece was titled Allegro Appassionato, op 43 written by Camille Saint–Saens. The piece started was started by the piano playing the melody. Then the clarinet accompanied the piano creating a homophonic texture. The timbre of the clarinet was very distinct over the piano. They continued playing then briefly there was a pause adding to the rhythm of the piece. Then the clarinet started to play solo creating a monophonic texture. The piano started to play again taking over the melody, with the clarinet accompanying. During this there was a distinct repetition of notes playing over and over by the clarinet. The texture created was homophonic as the piano and clarinet played in harmony. Then the texture switched to monophonic as the piano and clarinet went back and forth playing the melody solo. The piece ended with the piano and clarinet playing the same note, with the pianist letting the note fade out. The second piece was titled Lied written by Francios Rasse. • 14. Bohemian Rhapsody Essay The song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen is composed of many intricate musical events ranging from the fluctuation of harmonies to the use of different forms of music. In 1974, Queen created this song in order to show the world their true talent through an unorthodox song that no one really expected. Today, the song is iconic, but the song did not reach its full stride in contemporary society until it appeared on the soundtrack of the 1990s movie Wayne's World. Through its mixture of old music such as the operatics and the relatively modern music of vibrant rock, " Bohemian Rhapsody" catapulted Queen into stardom. At this point in the song, the sound from the guitar is almost synonymous to the lyrics of the song so it is almost like Mercury is still singing. This is not only important for the development of the song but it is also important for making the song a piece of its time. In the 70s, nearly every rock song had a guitar solo so it is important to this song for its historical relevance. At 3:08, the song shifts again out of slow rock and into an almost opera, broadway–musical–like form. The tempo of the song speeds up, and the timbre of Mercury's voice turns into a form where he seems to just be angrily talking to the listeners. This shift is important because it symbolizes the change from his sadness of his actions and into his want to fight for forgiveness. At 3:39, the vocals of Freddie Mercury are soft but are they negated by the harsh vocals of the rest of the group. They are essentially creating polar opposites with the high and low battling and then converging around the end. The abrupt shifting between consonant and dissonant creates a very ... These improvements in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, this partially increases a player's liking of a particular game. The other function of the ARAM is to store information which defines the timbres in a song. Sound, like many other things which occur in nature, actually consists of waves which travel through a medium and then hit our eardrums, causing them to vibrate and sending messages to our brain which is interpreted as sounds. Like all the other waves in nature, sound waves can be mathematically defined as a set of equations. Mathematical equations are exactly the way in which a video game system stores its sounds. The sound wave equations are used to define the timbres in a song. Through a process called frequency modulation synthesis (FM synthesis), programmers define timbre by creating and working with wave equations from scratch. Similarly to the increase in the length of a song, an increased ARAM can also be used to store longer wave equations which more precisely define a timbre in a song. Better defined waves mean an improvement in timbre which can bring a further sense of programmaticism to a song. This is true because of the fact that different instruments can be used to effectively portray certain emotions and situations. For example, a bassoon is often used to set a comical mood while an airy and thin sound such as a flute can be used to set a mood of fear and horror. Again this increase in the sense of the programmatic nature of songs helps to draw a player deeper into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Music Analysis: West Side Story We hear music, sing music, play music, and dance to music. Music is another way for us to express our feelings beside the words. There are ten elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, texture, form, pitch, dynamic, articulation, and lyrics; these also the broad definition of the entire realm of the theory of music and how it is made. At the physical level there are four significant wave patterns, which are defined as frequency, amplitude, duration and timbre (Hast et al. 2009, pp. 7–8). The piece of work that I have chosen to analyze the concepts is a song called "America", which is a clip from movie West Side Story. Even though each measure is the same length, their phrasings alternate between ONE two three FOUR five six, and ONE two THREE four FIVE six. It would be almost impossible to play this song in the correct style without thinking of these two pulse groupings. This is a nice way of showing that 3/4 is present in some sense, but that 6/8 is privileged as the real, underlying meter. ("Real" and "underlying" are metaphors, of course.) Assume the song were in "3/4 (6/8)," instead of "6/8 (3/4)", it would sound much different: the hemiola would apply not to "(A)–mer–ic–a," but to "I like to be in..." This would put the hemiola's extra energy in the wrong place and emphasis the wrong beat. Of course, if the composer tries changing the whole song to 3/4, making the hemiola ... The piece begins with the trumpets and snare drum with a mezzo piano dynamic. The trumpet repeats the same legato phrase of what seems to be eighth note, dotted quarter, eighth note, eighth note, eighth note then a whole note. Each time this was played by the brass instrument, it ascended by a half step. I personally liked this rhythm because it felt slower and more relaxed than the previous marches. Shortly after, the clarinets join in and layered the trumpet and snare. These woodwinds added a airy timbre to the slower piece and therefore, the dynamics changed from lento to vivace. Soon, all woodwinds, brass and percussion joined into the repeating melody adding a fuller feeling to the march. Shortly, the band crescendoed into a short rest. Then, the french horns to play piano, giving a darker tone and a brassy timbre. During this, a trumpet played a short fanfare that was very well played with use of quieter, legato dynamics to resemble the rest of the brass but still be more prominent with an unequal balance. The trumpet also had a pattern of an ascending then descending scale. Together the brass reminded me of the fullness and darkness of a serene forest or peaceful voyage. Perhaps resembling a sail through a fjord due to the march being Norwegian. A clarinet follows the trumpet's solo in the same rhythmic fashion and then the band plays tutti. While there were many notable pieces, the centerpiece, which I will focus on, was a violin and orchestra with an accordion solo called The Ox on the Roof. Originally Le boeuf sur le toit in its native French, the musical was composed by a Frenchman of Jewish roots by the name of Darius Milhaud in 1920. The musical played on this December night was performed under the supervision of Director Robert Xavier RodrГguez. While there were many qualities of various shades in this musical, the shifting timbre, the keen rhythm, and the perpetual notes of harmony were the most notable components to me as they helped represent a dual sense of both proud, unchanging timelessness and boisterous, dynamic nonce that gave a sense of life itself in all its glory. The timbre, or tone, was the most apparent quality of the musical. The timbre was a mix of both soft and rough tones. That is, the music appeared to be a mix of various genera. It often jumped between the jaunty and loud music that seemed to be Latin folk music and soft, austere sounds that seemed to be European classical or Romantic. This timbre was interspersed by a rhythms. This was the very transition between the two styles of music. In the first section, A, I recognized the usage of a piano, synthesizers, and a drum set. Different parts of the drumset, like the cymbals and the bass drum, are playing at a pianissimo and slowly crescendo up to a mezzo piano. It was the time when musical rules could be reinvented, altered and in some cases completely ignored (Hansen, et al 154). This classical music was described by many different works such as, orchestral, solos, operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music, and many others (Hansen, et al 168). As stated by Hansen, et al, "Some musical styles within the modernist movement were impressionism, serialism, minimalism, electronic music, experimental music, and change music (160). All the musical styles were influenced through jazz but it was a moment of breakthrough for all the composers since all rules were ignored. Aaron Copland and Benjamin Britten were two composers of that century that shaped the way twentieth century classical music was viewed. The different elements of classical musical such as melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, timbre, and form are what characterized the twentieth century classical music. First, twentieth century music had taken a different approach than earlier music eras. There were varieties of differences which started from the instruments and the sounds that it produced to the complexity of the textures. The composers used new approaches and ideas to their compositions and broke many rules. The window is always left open due to my admiration for the regular sounds that occur outside my building. This location makes me feel comfortable, calm, and upbeat. Not only did I specifically pick out the place and time for this assignment I really aimed to write this while the weather was accenting autumn, wet and windy. Nothing is more relaxing than a nice cup of coffee in the comforts of your own bed while the wind and rain serenade you. The whole season of fall makes me feel warm and content. Thoreau wrote "The indescribable innocence and beneficence of Nature, ––– of the sun and wind and rain, of summer and winter, ––– such health, such cheer, they afford forever! And such sympathy have they ever with our race, that all nature would be affected, and the suns brightness fade, and the winds would sigh humanely, and the clouds rain tears, and the woods shed their leaves and put on mourning in midsummer, if any man should ever for just a cause grieve" (Solitude, 110). Within the room itself, I can hear a few distinct sounds around me. A faint melody of jazz can be heard on a radio in the corner. Music helps me focus on whatever work I have for the night. Although I have turned the radio down in order to hear other sounds for this assignment, I can still hear small claps of a beat and an upbeat squeak of some kind of horn. Attached to my curtains are a string of old bells. The wind is picking up today and every time it blows a small gust through my window the curtain moves and the bells dance along it. They sound like tiny cow bells. The wind has also picked a fight with a small candle on one of my tables. I can hear the flickers of the flame trying to stay lit as well as it possibly can. And of course, the most apparent sound in the room is the tapping and clicking of my laptop keys as I write this. Outside of my window, there are several different layers of sound all unique to each other. The first layer come from the immediate parking lot in front and the whole apartment complex itself. • 31. P Ansori Singing Analysis P'ansori is sung by a women who is of old age. The purpose of this piece, P'ansoni, is to let this woman cry her pains and anguishes out through her screeching and singing. This is known as han, which means "great suffering and helplessness" that can appear in many ways. This woman chose to do it through drums and singing expressions. There are two drums in the background, both being low in pitch. They are played sparsely throughout the piece because it allows the focus of the listener to be on the woman's deep, hurting, musical expressions. The singer's pitch is inconsistent and atonal. There is no melody to what she is singing, because she leaps from note to note that covers a broad register. She utilizes her entire register, by singing low... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are vocal harmonizations, a virtuosic accordion, small brass ensemble, drum set, and rub board all combined to create the zydeco music Queen Ida Guillory is going for. All of these instruments play a swung 4/4 pattern. The drum set is always playing a swung 4/4 jazz–influenced beat, while the wash board will play swung triplets or eighth notes. The timbre of the wash board is metallic and dry. The player uses short and choppy strokes, which adds nicely to making this piece feel like it is indeed swung. The band members plays the washboard at a mezzo–piano dynamic. The brass ensemble will play long tones, which lays underneath Guillory's singing, acting as a harmony. Aside from the last note of the piece, which is fortissimo, they play at a mezzo–forte dynamic. This allows the listener to hear the combination of Guillory's melody and their own harmony. The timbre of Guillory is nasally, but has plenty of depth to each note that he sings. This "nasally depth" that he gives his listener makes the melody have a relaxed mood to it, and the song as a whole is on the back of the beat. He is always at a forte dynamic, because he has the most interesting part for the entire piece. During the song, if Guillory wants to escape the relaxed feeling of his tune, he will make certain phrases pop out to the listener by adding a crash cymbal behind certain words and will personally give the words more air for an ... • 32. Ethnography of Performance Essay Ethnography of Performance During a musical performance many elements to be looked are not easily recognized by the average critic. A musical performance has multiple interactions taking place between the music, text, performers, audience, and space that all can contribute to a great performance. Overwhelming majority of the audience does not realize so much can be looked at during a single performance. At a performance by the University of Maryland Marching Band I was able to analyze the Musical Sound, Contexts of the Performance, and Interpretation of the Performance. When analyzing musical sound there are many factors to pay attention to during the performance. Important things to listen for are the pitch, scale, timbre, tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the performance there were many overtones and one fundamental tone, which deals with the timbre and tone quality. "The overtones produce additional sounds that enable us to distinguish between different instruments even when they are sounding the same pitch"(Kaemmer:60). The tone quality of the performance was very good. The music sounded evenly distributed and it was very easy to hear the sounds of the various instruments. The band played two songs and one song had a slow rhythm and the other had a faster rhythm. Rhythm means more than a basic beat (Kaemmer:65). During the performance there was a steady rhythm. Also during the performance there was a section of the song that sounded different and after about ten seconds the song goes back to its previous sound. That sound was a melody. Melodies are combination of pitches and rhythm patterns that produce a distinctive line of sound (Kaemmer:62). When the band first began to play the song started in a low tone and the music began to escalate and it reached a climax where the loudness of the performance was at its peak. Once at its peak the music began to get softer and lower. This is an example of a linear form of the performance. Linear form means a performance having a definite beginning and ending. The overall musical sound of the performance was delightful and pleasing to the ears. The context of a musical performance is another key part of any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Debussy's Influence In Classical Music Classical music in the twentieth century was marked by an avoidance of Common Practice Period traditions. At the same time, classical music in the twentieth century represented a blending of old ideas with new practices. These two beliefs tended to clash with one another, but this competition allowed for a great leap forward in musical evolution. Three artists were responsible for that great leap forward. Debussy sparked an interest in tonality, texture and timbre which others later emulated. Stravinsky innovated through his expansion of Russian idioms, and influence in neoclassicist music. Or have you ever realized that when you watch something without sound your reaction to it is automatically different? That's simply because no one ever becomes aware of how the background music gives scenes simulation and reality. Throughout the intense clip of Get out by Jordan Peele, we can distinguish different dynamics, texture, and timbre which gives the clip the mood. In the beginning of the clip no music is playing and the audience is under the impression that Chris, the main character, is about to be used for a brain transplant. The first dynamic which occurs at 48 seconds, gives the scene more of a serious and nervous mood because it is at mezzo forte. It starts off as medium volume and grows to be louder the deeper we go into the scene. The same also occurs after he has killed off the father's son and now we see the father is concerned and starts to notice. However, when it comes to the father's turn to die at 1 minute and 53 seconds since we saw it coming, the dynamic switched routes and became more of a piano to silent volume. With each person he defeats after the father, the dynamic dies down to silent right before the action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These musical features cause a change in the audience's heartbeat because the tempo is so strong. It is giving the movie more of a dramatic life feel being that it comes out of nowhere. Imagine watching a scene and a climax is approaching, there is no music and no sound, and as soon as climax reaches, music finishes it off with the cherry on top. Since this movement's form was ostinato, I heard short melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns repeated. This piece was long, at twelve minutes, and at one point I stopped taking notes, in awe of what I was hearing. The entire piece felt symmetrical to me and was sing able throughout. Beethoven's Sonata 3, Opus 69 nears a close with a texture that was heterophonic, dynamics that go from forte to piano and a bright tone color for cello and piano. The melody remained conjunct with a contour that was wavelike, by ascending and descending, especially for the piano. The tempo returned to allegro throughout this piece and ended with the dynamics returning to forte and the final cadence as the harmony resolved in consonance. The second movement of Beethoven's Sonata in A Major, Opus 69 was Scherzo: Allegro molto and began with Jordan–Anders playing the opening notes of the melody in a narrow range with a melodic movement that was conjunct. The texture here was monophonic for only a few measures. The timbre of the piano was bright and the harmony was minor. I heard the second movement in triple meter, and by the time the cello began to play there seemed to be a return to the polyphonic texture which was common in the first movement. Analysis Of Joe Garland's 'In The Mood' The Jazz era was a time period in which the definition of music began to diverge; composers were able to express themselves in a sense that was soulful and vibrant, where any door of possibility became obtainable. "In The Mood" was a piece by Joe Garland composed in the 1930's during the swing era. The iconic Jazz number had been arranged by many artists; however, it was not until Glenn Miller orchestrated this piece so perceptively that "In The Mood" became so well renowned. It was in 1939 when Miller seamlessly altered the Jazz piece that "In The Mood" was sent to number 1 on the U.S. charts for 13 weeks in 1940. She admires how the sounds of the frogs are complimented with the sounds of the rain. "What beautiful sounds" she thinks. But how can these sounds be classified? A music or just simple sounds? Almost anything can be classified nowadays, from the way we think to how things sound–it's all a matter of how we perceive things. Humans often use language and emotion to classify people–music can even determine how we might classify someone. Classification by definition is the act or classifying something (people, items, plants etc.) according to shared qualities or characteristics (Oxford Dictionary). For instance, one might classify a book about dragons as a fiction book while a book about dinosaurs can be classified as a non–fiction book. • 38. Dying Swan Analysis The composition called The Swan performed by Yo–Yo Ma, the poem called The Dying Swan by Alfred Lord Tennyson, and the ballet of Le Cygne (The Swan) by Anna Pavlova connected to each other clearly and meaningfully by describing how The Swan's experience connects to human being's life cycle. The compositions musical elements connect to the poem because it starts with a depressing and miserable sound as how the poem starts in the first stanza. Then, the composition gives an inspiring emotion to the listener as how the poem gives inspiration to the reader. Furthermore, the composition also connects to the ballet because it follows the rhythm and melody of the composition by creating a dance that expresses an aching heart over people dying, peace of the deceased, and it inspired people to accept death as the dying swan accepted its own death. The ballerina shifted her speed with the tempo of the music symbolizing the meaning and feeling of the poem. The composer's choices were effective in creating such a dramatic moment because the composition, ballet, and poem flew along as they instilled a mournful and content joy causing a death confronting inspiration. The instrumentation in The Swan composition is a violincello that was transcribed by the harp and viola, and the tempo is played both slowly and quickly. The cello is the baritone of the strings, which creates a melodious tone both deep and dulcet. Furthermore, the other instruments that were played in the background were the harp and violas, which are the accompaniments of the cello's solo. The harp has a ringlike sharp tone and the viola provides a lower pitch that has a rich, complete tone. The harp and the viola play a harmony, timbre, and rhythm for the cello's solo. Additionally, cellos are usually used to compose classical music, which probably influenced the composer to use a cello because it will connect better to The Dying Swan poem. The cello created a deeply inspirational sound that other instruments would of probably have failed to produce. Moreover, the tempo of the composition starts off by playing slowly, to give a serious or solemn feeling because the poem starts off by giving a vivid depressed feeling to the reader. • 39. An in-Depth Analysis of the Use of Specific Musical... The Romantic Era was a period of great change and emancipation. It moved away from strict laws by allowing artistic freedom, experimentation and creativity. Romantic music evolved from ideas established in earlier periods, such as the classical period, and went further through the use of expression and passion. New musical concepts evolved due to current trends and the music was deeply personal and nationalistic. Musical concepts including pitch, tone colour and dynamics and expressive techniques each express the style of the Romantic period in differing ways. These concepts are exemplified through Nocturne and Valse, both by Chopin. Nocturne and Valse are both emotionally expressionistic pieces typical of the romantic era, written by... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the Nocturne is played with legato articulation, this creates more freedom and expression. The Valse however, is played with Tempo Giusto. This means it is much more strict as it must be played in exact time. This does not allow for variation, unlike the Nocturne, which is common with waltzes. The smooth character of the Nocturne and Valse is also linked with the inclusion of sostenuto articulation. The loud pedal creates an overlapping effect, which contributes to the nature of the piece. The type of layer relationship shown in both the Nocturne and Valse is homophonic. They consist of a dominant melodic layer accompanied by subordinate harmonic layers. Many composers of this time, reached for extremely high or low sounds. This was in search of increased brilliance and depth in sound. Throughout the Nocturne the broken chords in the bass span from relatively high to low pitch with the lowest note, an f, in bar 8 and the highest, an a#, in bar 37. The treble experiences a similar type of pitch pattern, with notes ranging from mid pitch to high pitch, which can be seen in bars 30–37 of the piece. Romantic composers revelled in rich and sensuous sound, using tone colour to obtain variety of mood and atmosphere. Never before had timbre been so important. Composers sought new ways of blending and combining tone colours to achieve the most poignant and intense sound. The Piano, the favourite instrument of the romantic age, was vastly ...
