Odysseus Mistakes
Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the
obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.
Odysseus's journey home started when he was getting ready to set sail and leave Troy after the Trojan War. Odysseus shouts how he solved the war all
by himself without any help from the gods. He is arrogant about their victory which angers Poseidon. Poseidon, along with other gods, curses his
journey home.

Odysseus Changes
The term "dynamic" is often used in literature to describe a character who changes drastically from one point in the story to another. When reading
"The Odyssey" an epic poem by Homer, we see that our protagonist, Odysseus, changes throughout the course of the novel. This essay will argue how
he changes, and also what changes him, such as his travels, his relationships, and how fate and the Greek gods affect and change him.
From the start of the novel, we find Odysseus on the far off island of Ogygia with the goddess Calypso, this is ten years after he had initially left to
go and fight in the Trojan way. Odysseus leaves this place to go to the Island of the Phaecians, but has trouble on his way and is humbled when he
is almost killed by Posiedon, god of the sea. Since we are seeing the end of his journey at first, we can learn from the phaecians about what
Odysseus has done even before he left for troy. We see that despite being the great hero, Odysseus doesn't participate in the Phaecians games but he
refuses because of his grief. "On that cue, the noble prince strode up before Odysseus, front and center, asking, 'Come stranger, sir, won't you try your
hand at our contests now? If you have skill in any. It's fit and proper to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We know that Odysseus has had problems with the god of the sea Poseidon, as with his son the Cyclops. When Polyphemus eats two of Odysseus's
men, "He knocked them dead like pups." (Page 220, Homer) the crew knows that he is trouble. Odysseus gets the giant drunk, and when the cyclops
asks Odysseus what his name is, he says that he is "Nobody". The men shove a sharpened stick into the Cyclops's lone eye and escape. This Cyclops,
being Poseidon's son, was not someone that Odysseus should have crossed. We also see Athena, daughter of Zeus, take pity on Odysseus, and helps
him and Telemachus many times, though disguising herself as mentor when talking to

Characteristics Of Odysseus
A Greek Hero is a man or women, usually of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his or her bold
exploits, and favored by the gods. In the book The Odyssey by the poet Homer, the Greek Hero Odysseus and his crew are thought to never come
home after 20 years since fighting in the battle of Troy by his family and the people of Ithaca. The poor town is stricken by a coma of grief for their
lost ruler. Greedy suitors wanting to marry Odysseus wife Penelope, harass her, Disrespect Odysseus palace by eating all his food and take everything
from hi. This has been happening for 3 years. Soon the reader finds out he is actually alive and has been on his way to get home. Throughout the crews
journey they have some problems along the way. Odysseus leadership is tested throughout all their adventures in the journey. Odysseus shows qualities
of good leadership by being instructive and well spoken, however he is arrogant and puts his men in danger.
Odysseus is a good leader because he is honest with his crew about what he wants and needs from them. In book nine , when Odysseus and his men are
in the Cyclops's cave and have plan to stab him in the eye, "'and I told my men to draw straws to decide to witch of them would share the risk with
me– lift that stake into his eye while he was asleep'. They drew straws and came up with the very men I myself would have chosen. There were four of
them, and I made five" (Book 9 lines 325–331). The fact that

Characteristics Of Odysseus
Have you ever wondered how people would describe a leader? While Odysseus showed many characteristics that a leader should show, he also shows
many that a leader shouldn't. Odysseus is the leader of the Trojan army, who goes on a journey to get back home to Ithaca after winning the Trojan
war, to see his wife, Penelope and his son Telemachus again. During his journeyOdysseus is told that he will be the only survivor out of hundreds of
his crew members. However, Odysseus neglects to tell this information to his crew with the worry of his crew wanting to end their journey. You
would think that a leader who puts his team through dangerous events would be affected as well, and would choose the option the go down with his
crew, and to not choose to be the only one who survives. While many people describe Odysseus as a loyal, and honest leader, he makes many poor
decisions that prove this otherwise. Some may say that Odysseus didn't share this information for the sake that they would freak out, and not try to get
home at all.
First of all, Odysseus sailed to the land of the cyclopes where he was hoping to find food. Odysseus and his men find cheese and other food safety.
But Odysseus didn't leave after that. Odysseus and a few of his men then come upon a cave, when soon after that they meet Polyphemus. Odysseus
had the chance to leave the island with the cheese he was looking for in the first place, but he ended up putting his men in danger. By the end of the

Characteristics Of Odysseus
In classical literature, heroes are normal people that have a certain trait or quality that distinguishes them from everyone else. In The Odyssey,
Odysseus captivates the audience with his cleverness, heroism, and cunning, but away at Ithaca lies a dormant neglected, and powerful character,
Penelope. Penelope isn't the classical hero, she does not slay great beasts or liberate cities, but in her own right, she proved to be equal, if not greater
than the great Odysseus. Through her cunning, virtue, loyalty, and vigilance. Penelope established herself as not just a counterpart, but a greater
character than the hero himself.
There are several traits and qualities that made Odysseus the character and hero he is and because of his circumstances, he could put those on
display. In his dilemma with Polyphemus, he had to use his cleverness and intelligence to trick cyclops so he could escape from the cave. He also
maintained vigilance. After Circe warned him, in book 12, that if he hoped to survive he would have to sacrifice some of his men he scoffed at the
idea and instead tried to save and protect them on. He failed of course, but despite his shortcomings, it is very commendable because he very well
could have simply saved himself, but he shows strong character as he tried to maintain a certain level of vigilance. Furthermore, Odysseus was
virtuous and loyal to an extent. During his journey, he ran into two seductresses', Circe and Kalypso, both of which he had an affair with.

Odysseus Reflection
Ten years after the fall of Troy, the successful Greek saint Odysseus has still not came back to his local Ithaca. A band of raucous suitors, trusting
Odysseus to be dead, has overwhelm his royal residence, pursuing his devoted – however debilitating – spouse, Penelope, and experiencing his supply
of nourishment. With authorization from Zeus, the goddess Athena,Odysseus' most prominent godlike partner, shows up in mask and urges Odysseus'
child Telemachus to look for news of his dad at Pylos and Sparta. Be that as it may, the suitors, driven by Antinous, plan to trap him upon his arrival.
As Telemachus tracks Odysseus' trail through stories from his old companions in–arms, Athena orchestrates the arrival of Odysseus from the island of
the excellent goddess Calypso, whose detainee and beau he has been throughout the previous eight years. Odysseus sets cruise on a stopgap pontoon,
yet the ocean god Poseidon, whose anger Odysseus caused before in his enterprises by blinding Poseidon's child, the Cyclops Polyphemus, invokes a
tempest. With Athena's assistance, Odysseus comes to the Phaeacians. Their princess, Nausicaa, who really likes the great looking warrior, opens the
castle to the outsider. Odysseus withholds his character for whatever length of time that he can until at last, at the Phaeacians' ask for, he recounts the
account of his enterprises.
Odysseus relates how, following the Trojan War, his men endured more misfortunes on account of the Kikones, at that point were about enticed to
remain on the island of the medication confused Lotus Eaters. Next, the Cyclops Polyphemus ate up a large portion of Odysseus' men before a clever
arrangement of Odysseus' enabled the rest to get away – however not before Odysseus uncovered his name to Polyphemus and in this manner began
his own war with Poseidon. The wind god Ailos at that point gave Odysseus a pack of winds to help his arrival home, yet the group ravenously
opened the sack and sent the ship to the place where there is the goliath, man–eating Laistrygonians, where they again scarcely got away.
On their next stop, the goddess Circe deceived Odysseus' men and transformed them into pigs. With the assistance of the god Hermes, Odysseus

Odysseus Is A Hero
In the book, "The One Eyed Giant's Cave "written by homer, Odysseus the main character shows how heroic and brave he was. He was an
adventurous character, who had his mind set on what he wanted. He travel across seas with his men all way to Ismarus, city. This was a very risky
trip because this place had been known for millions of cyclones. Odysseus knew it wasn't going to be easy but he was very strong heroic and brave.
During the trip many things occurred. They were on their way home when they hit a huge storm taking them three hours in the wrong direction. Before
they realized they had already been in the island of Lotus. The native had offered fresh nice looking fruit to Odysseus and his men. They thought the

that they needed to be very fast and leave as soon as possible. Of course none of the crew listened to Odysseus and the Cyclops son had arrived. At
first everyone was startled, but he remained calm and seemed to be very friendly, but quickly his mood changed and he because very hostel
locking up Odysseus and all his men for future meals. They had to think of a plan and they had to think quickly, through the night Odysseus had
some up with a plan to be friends with the Cyclops because he knew there was no possible way they could defeat him physically. So while he was
outside taking care of the animals Odysseus began to search the room and found a wooden staff in the grave and set it on the fire to harden it. Soon
the monster returns and they began to exchange names, he asked the Cyclops and he said Polyphemus , when he asked for Odysseus name he said
"Nobody" and stated that's what everyone back home calls him. Then Odysseus had offered to share his whine that he had brought on his ship. He
waited for the Cyclops to get intoxicated and fall asleep. That's when he and all this men shoved the burning wooden staff in his eye.

Odysseus Qualities
Odysseus, the main character and the hero of the epic, The Odyssey, is the leader of a fleet of men who tend to get themselves in many wild
shenanigans and setbacks. Although he does get and at his men, he understands the human nature of his men, and do want the best for them. This task
of keeping his men alive is made easier by the fact that Odysseus is naturally a heroic person and leader. He is willing to do or go anywhere to
ensure the safety of his men and a higher chance of arriving at their home, Ithaka. Thus, throughout the course of Book 10, Odysseus has shown to
readers that he justifies the traits that originates from being a brave and caring leader. To start, Odysseus meets the qualities that comes with being a
courageous leader by willing to fight anyone for the safety of himself and his crew. For example, after hearing the tragic news of the disappearance
of several of his men, Odysseus is willing to go back to the palace where they had disappeared, not knowing who could ... Show more content on

For instance, after his men foolishly release the winds in the bag from King Aiolos assuming that treasure had been enclosed in it, Odysseus and
his men are swept back to the island of Aiolia. During this event, Odysseus considers jumping off the boat for a swift and watery death, but is loyal
to his men and stays with them on the boat. Also, after a year of living comfortably on the island of Aiaia, Odysseus's men are homesick and wish to
return to Ithaka. With hearing this, Odysseus retells, "They made me feel a pang, and I agreed" (10.525), therefore sacrificing a life of luxury for him
and his men to go back to Ithaka. Lastly, when announcing the departure of him and his men from Aiaia, Odysseus notes that, "I bent above each one,
and gently said:" (10.604), taking the time to personally tell the news to each of his men, and in a gentle tone, so as not to harshly stir them

Odysseus
Ships, open sea, spells, one eyed monsters, and boundless adventure is but some of the many exciting and thrilling features of the book The
Odyssey. Favored by the gods, and a great man of war, Odysseus was a man to be looked upon with respect. After the war between the Trojans and
Greeks had finally ceased, it was time for Odysseus and his men to return home, yet fate held another plan. "Just as I have come from afar, creating
pain for many, men and women across the good green earth, so let his name be Odysseus, the Son of Pain, a name he'll earn in full." –The odyssey

Physical strength had also been blessed upon Odysseus, which allowed him to greatly influence the war. Nevertheless, it was Odysseus smart mind
that helped the Greeks conquer Troy with the Trojan horse, not as much as his physical strength. These are only some of Odysseus many strengths.
Odysseus's natural tendency under pressure is to think his plan through and analyze the circumstance quickly and accurately. For example, when he
and his men were stuck in the Cyclops cave, the crew picked up their swords and were ready to fight, yet wise Odysseus remained calm and told
them to lower their weapons, for who would roll away the giant stone doorway if they killed him? Instead they got him into a drunken stupor and
gouged his eye out. Successfully their plan worked and they safely made it out of the deadly cave. Another situation in which Odysseus remained calm
was when he had to endure watching the horrible suitors mistreat his house, family, and world. He lived by the rule that there is always a certain time
and place for anger. Nonetheless, Odysseus's natural tendency under pressure is to remain calm, cool, and collected.

Delusional In Odysseus
Why does Odysseus see himself in those delusions? In my perspective, Odysseus, the ruler of Ithaca and a Greek ruler of Troy, is such a character that
does not seem as delusional as Ajax, yet there are some characteristics within him, which consequently make him view himself as delusional.
Unfortunately, completing this question thoroughly was quite difficult, as Odysseus did not provide many statements. Nonetheless, to begin with, in
comparison to Ajax, this ruler does not allow his feelings of hatred over power his conscience, as despite the fact that he knew of Ajax's motive to
destroy him, he remained quite calm. Specifically, in the text, Odysseus exclaims to Athena, "I am circling round for signs of my enemy, Ajax, the
shield bearer. He is the man I have been tracking, no one else. Last night he carried out an unimaginable crime," yet he has not embarked on drastic
measures to compromise Ajax's safety and being. (Dutta, 3) Moreover, I was not able to find evidence to prove that Odysseus is per say delusional,
rather the fact, that he is obscure and battles with his own emotions. To begin with, when Athena was allowing for Ajax to be present in front of
Odysseus, allowing him to make his statement, Odysseus exclaimed, "Athena, what are you doing? Don't call him out! ... Don't, for God's sake! Let
him stay inside!", it seems to be delusional and ironic, as words before he stated, "He is the man I was tracking, no one else ... I volunteered to take
on this task ... I was on

The Homecoming Of Odysseus
The Odyssey of Homer is a fascinating epic of the homecoming of Odysseus, one of the most influential heroes of the Trojan war. This homecoming
journey of Odysseus which serves as a means of teaching him greater lessons of life and humility. Furthermore, Odyssey beautifully portrays the
transformation Telemachus, the son ofOdysseus, from a scared little boy to a confident warrior.
Athena, the goddess of wisdom, wants to make the homecoming of Odysseus successful. The successful homecoming according to Athene's plan won't
be accomplished just by the mere return of Odysseus to Ithaka. The definition of Athena's version of Odysseus' homecoming includes the return of

As a result, Athena is there to advise and prepare Telemachus for her greater plan of the homecoming of Odysseus. Athena's first goal is pointed out by
her statement, "Tomorrow, summon the Achaian warriors into assembly / and publish your word to all...Tell suitors to scatter and go back to their own
holdings" (1.272–274) which commands Telemachus to call an assembly for suitors and tell them to leave his household. Further, Athena suggests
Telemachus visit Nestor and Menelaus, who was his father's friend in the Trojan war by the statement "First go to Pylos, and there question the great
Nestor, / and from there go over to Sparta to see fair–haired Menelaos, / since he came from home last of all the bronze–armored Achains."
(1.284–286). Finally, the words of Athena "after you have made an end of these matters, and done them, / next you must consider well in your heart
and spirit some means by which you can kill the suitors who are in your household, / by treachery or open attack." (1.293–296) reveals her final plan
for Telemachus that he must find a way to kill the suitors after his return.

Relationship between Athena and Odysseus By looking at the epic The Odyssey by Homer, there are a lot of contacts between human and immoral, the
relationship between Athena and Odysseus, which make me interesting, also this is important for the story. The relationship between Athena and

Odysseus Downfall
By putting his men in constant danger, resulting in all of his men dying, Odysseus demonstrates the hallmark of a dreadful leader. In the episode The
Cyclops, Odysseus leads his men into the cave of polyphemus looking for a fight, because polyphemus is the child of Poseidon. In the process of
looking for a fight he loses quite a few men to the Cyclops, and after escaping continues to egg polyphemus on by yelling in triumph at the Cyclops.
Which almost leads to the crews demise. After the Cyclops defeat Odysseus boasts, "' O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions?... How do you
like the beating we gave you, you damned cannibal?" (The Cyclops. 476). This demonstrates Odysseus being a dreadful leader because he puts his
men into the danger of being killed by the Cyclops, and risking their lives by proudly boasting to Polyphemus after himself and the crew have already
escaped. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator speaks to the reader,"Odysseus does not tell his men of Circe's last prophecy––that he will be the only survivor of their long journey" (The

die on their journey, but he does not share this information nor does he try to protect his men; causing the result of his men dying. After leaving
Aeolia for a second time, Odysseus and his men are attacked by gigantic cannibals and escape to the home of the enchantress and goddess Circe.
Circe gets all of Odysseus's men drunk and proceeds to cast her magic on the men, " So, squealing, in they went. And Circe tossed them acorns, mast,

Odysseus Motivation
The Odyssey is an epic by the ancient Greek poet Homer that tells the story of Odysseus's journey to get back to his home on Ithaca after the Trojan
War. Odysseus's main goal is to return home with his crew on their ship. Odysseus loses everything after he couldn't control his crew and himself.
Odysseus has to face many challenges to get home. In the story, Odysseus was sometimes at the point where it seemed like all hope was lost and
nothing was possible. Love is what keeps Odysseus from giving up on his goal even when it seems impossible. The love of Odysseus's home, family,
and crew is what keeps him motivated throughout the poem. Odysseus's love for his home is a passionate love that motivates him in the poem. All

When Odysseus left for the Trojan War, he had to leave his wife Penelope, his son Telemachus, and his parents. Odysseus has a very strong bond
with his wife that could never be broken. Penelope and Odysseus are both clever, courageous, and loyal. Even though Odysseus met some women
that loved him on his journey, he always stayed faithful to Penelope. Penelope also stayed faithful to Odysseus even though there were 118 men
living in her home for many years. Odysseus missed having the young years with his wife which Penelope calls the prime years of their life.
Odysseus also missed his son's whole childhood. He had to leave for the war shortly after Telemachus was born, and then he returns and Telemachus
is a young adult. Odysseus has a very emotional reaction to seeing his son, "Held back too long, the tears ran down his cheeks as he embraced his son"

Intelligence In Odysseus
A hero is someone who exceeds the expectations and performs above and beyond the average person. Odysseus from the epic poem The Odyssey,
acts above and beyond his crew and the typical mortal. Odysseus uses his intelligence throughout his journeys to further develop his courage allowing
him to be resilient in the time of crisis arguing he is a hero.
Odysseus uses intelligence to guide him on his tricky journey home to Ithaca establishing that he is a hero. When Odysseus and his crew land on the
land of the Cyclops, they get trapped in a cave with a human–eating Cyclops named Polyphemus. Polyphemus turns hostile and becomes a serious
threat to Odysseus and his crews' chance of returning home. Odysseus uses his intelligence to get out of the disastrous situation by getting the Cyclops
drunk and then blinding Polyphemus by using a "stake with its fiery tip" (Homer 9.443) and thrusting it into the single eye on the Cyclops. Odysseus'
keen sense of intelligence allows him to predict that Polyphemus would try to get help from his Cyclops neighbors so he plans ahead telling
Polyphemus, "Nobody––that's my name. Nobody so my mother and father call me, all my friends" (Homer 9.410–411). Odysseus, although physically
strong, understands that outthinking an opponent often leads to victory and in the incident with the cyclops this theory held true. Odysseus predicted
that once he burned the eye, Polyphemus would scream out in pain notifying his neighbors that something was wrong.

In The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus goes through this epic sea voyage that takes him nearly 10 years. Along the way, Odysseus faces many
challenges he has to overcome in order to reach Ithaka, his home, but all his crew members end up dying because of Odysseus' actions. Like the quote
said by the Prophet Muhammad, Odysseus isn't able to reach home quickly because of his arrogance and other flaws to his personality. Many readers
will argue that Odysseus is a hero for returning home heroically, but Odysseus has many flaws to his personality such as his arrogance, curiosity, and
selfishness, which causes violence and unwarranted death along Odysseus' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this passage, Odysseus is arrogant because he blames everything on his crew. He is very self–centered and very obnoxious to his men. Odysseus
doesn't know his own faults while he recognizes other people's flaws and Odysseus reacts harshly to his crew member's flaws. Odysseus blames his
own crew because he never wants to take responsibility showing arrogance and lack of leadership skills. This is not an acceptable behavior because
Odysseus and his crew members have to be on the same page while on the journey. Odysseus displays huge amounts of arrogance during his journey,
resulting in his journey to be delayed and inconvenient.
Odysseus' excessive curiosity is a flaw to his personality because Odysseus wants to know everything and defeat anyone, but he doesn't think
about the consequences that tie in to his actions. Before Odysseus encounters with the Sirens, Kirke tells Odysseus to avoid the Sirens because
they're dangerous, but Odysseus is very curious and he takes a chance against the Sirens. Odysseus knows that encountering with the Sirens will
be dangerous but he does it anyways. Odysseus says "Kirke foresaw for us and shared with me, so let me tell her forecast: then we die with our eyes
open, if we are going to die or know what death we baffle if we can. Seirenes weaving a haunting song over the sea we are to shun, she said, and their

Characteristics Of Odysseus
Do you know anyone who wants to fight for ten years? One man was willing. He was a determined man who was willing to face a lot of challenges
to return home. He was the great Odysseus. A hero is a person who is loyal, determined, and brave. Heroes are role models that anyone should look up
to. Also, they will sacrifice themselves for something they think is important. Heroes are favored by others. Odysseus is an epic hero from Ithaca and
has a wife named Penelope and a son named Telemachus. Odysseus was a Greek soldier and fought in a ten–year war called the Trojan War, which was
fought outside the walls of a great city called Troy, and he was trying to get home for ten years. Throughout Odysseus' journey, he shows many heroic
and flawed traits. Although he had many flaws, he is a hero. Odysseus has many heroic qualities such as cleverness, physical strength, and bravery.
First, Odysseus tricked the cyclops, Polyphemus, by telling him his name was "Nobody" ( The Odyssey 1058). This showed cleverness because
Odysseus gave the cyclops a bottle of wine to make him drunk, which caused him to fall asleep. Then, Odysseus found some wood and sharpened it
to stab Polyphemus in the eye. While Polyphemus was blind, he asked Odysseus what his name was, he said it was Nobody and made the cyclops
believed that was his name. Another example of when he showed a heroic quality is when Odysseus tricked the suitors by doing an impossible task he
knew no one could do and it was to string

Is Odysseus A Hero
Is Odysseus a Hero?
What makes a hero? In "The Odyssey", an epic by Homer, we were asked whether Odysseus was a hero or not. But what makes a hero? In movies,
heroes are depicted as someone with superhuman strength or the ability to fly, but is this what a hero truly is? Odysseus fought through many hard
battles against unimaginable monsters, and without him many would have died. Odysseus is a hero because he was both clever and brave. Some
people might say the things he did were unheroic. After all, Odysseus' actions were reckless and his men never made it back home, but this is wrong.
Odysseus fought for each of his men on multiple occasions. Even heroes make mistakes, they are still human, however a real hero can overcome those

He faced many tough challenges on his journey home, but he overcame them by not being scared in the face of danger. When their ship came upon
Scylla and Charybdis he was ready to face the two monsters. He was willing to fight through Scylla and Charybdis to save him and his men, "I tied up
my Cuirass and took two heavy spears and made my way up the foredeck– thinking to see her first from there." he was ready to fight through the
incredibly terrifying monsters, which would have scared any other man away. (ll. 788–790) Even when all odds were stacked against him, he took on
the challenge. He knew he was outnumbered, but still he continued and devised a plan of attack to take his house and wife back. In the end they
won, "In blood and dust he saw that crowd all fallen, many and many slain." Odysseus was a fearless hero he knew what he was up against and fought
hard to defeat the odds. (ll. 1533–1534) There was a big possibility that he and his son wouldn't make it out alive but with his bravery and cunning
planning he took back his home from the

Reflection Of Odysseus
Trying to decipher a person is a difficult task, perhaps impossible. We can, however, observe their actions, their experiences and their resemblance to
other people to make some progress in comprehending them. Deciphering Odysseus is especially strenuous, for he is shown as a crafty liar who tricks
others to get what he wants. Additionally, we cannot tell where the truths end and the lies begin. Consequently, we might not be able to wholly answer
who Odysseus is but if we are to understand the Odyssey, we first have to understand Odysseus.
Homer has constructed Odysseus as a complex character who is capable of molding himself into different forms to get the best out of his
surroundings. Despite this complexity, Homer has given us enough clues to be able to recognize his actions. Of these clues, some are explicit and
obvious, others are implied and can be deduced via his speeches and his acts. The explicit ones are easy, he is described to be, among other things,
wise, kind and resourceful. The proofs of these can be seen numerous times in the text and thus be taken at face value. The real difficulty starts when
we move past the explicit to the implicit.
To grasp his nature, we have to observe the other roles in the book who share parts of his experiences, personalities or aims. Consider Telemachus.
Despite the clear difference between his and Odysseus` stature, other people like Nestor and Menelaus have no trouble accepting him to be the son of
Odysseus after hearing him

Amphinomus And Odysseus
Amphinomus is clearly depicted as an antagonist in The Odyssey. He is one of the dozens of suitors who plague Odysseus' home, eat all his
livestock, drink all his wine, and vie for his wife's hand in marriage. Perhaps worst of all, Amphinomus is part of the conspiracy to kill Telemachus.
However, his status as a villain is not entirely dependent on his poor moral character. In fact, some of his actions show that he isn't a terrible person.
Amphinomus does initially oppose putting Telemachus to death before he can call an assembly when the suitors hear news of his return. In addition,
he does show some degree of hospitality to Odysseus, compelling Odysseus to warn him about the impending slaughter. These redeeming qualities may
make it appear

Empathy In The Odysseus
Empathy in the odyssey We often think that we are a caring and kind person but when we become tired, stressed, or rushed all empathy we have can
seem to vanish. We start to put our own needs first and others second. But what if we weren't always like this? The odyssey is a perfect example of
what happens when we don't have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseus and Polyphemus fail to understand each other leading to some unfortunate
results. Polyphemus shows almost no empathy in his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without empathy pain is
inevitable.Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclops when comparing how different his lifestyle is to Polyphemus'. For example
when describing how the Polyphemus lives he says in disgust, "He was quite unlike any man who eats bread, more like some wooded peak in the high
hills, standing out alone apart from the others."(9.190–192) It is apparent from this quote that Odysseus does not respect those who work on their own.
He thinks that Polyphemus is uncivilized and a lesser being just because his lifestyle is different from that of Odysseus'. In addition Odysseus
distances himself from the cyclops by comparing their size, describing the cyclops as, "so huge he cannot possibly be man". Rather than trying to find
similarities between himself and the cyclops he obsesses on their differences. Based on the fact that Odysseus clearly does not even try to understand
what the cyclops life is

Characteristics Of Odysseus
What qualities do you need to be a great leader? People say, "You have to be born a leader". In The Odyssey, people saw Odysseus as a wise leader,
because he won battles, fought monsters, and he was smart. Here, another question arises. If Odysseus existed in our time, would he win the
leadership award? Being a leader is a hard role to play because leaders have great responsibilities. They have to make choices that could change
people's lives. Being a great leader means that they have to be honest, delegate, have a positive attitude, be creative, be committed, confidence, and have
great communication skills. Honesty– When you are working with people or people working for you, you have to be honest with each other, because

Odysseus In The Odyssey
Odysseus is the king of Ithaca and is sent to Troy to fight the Trojans. He is at war for 10 years. After the war was over he was very arrogant. As a
result, the gods send Odysseus to a hero's journey to teach him a lesson. In the epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer and translated by Robert
Fitzgerald, the hero Odysseus uses his wits and strength of character to make it home after a twenty year absence.
Odysseus has very good knowledge about the land of the lotus eaters and its purposes. Odysseus shows a great amount of wits and strength as well
as leadership with his men. Odysseus warns his men that one little thing will lead to their doom. Zeus sends a storm which sends Odysseus and his
men to the land of the lotus eaters. Odysseus says, "clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home" (Fitzgerald, 602).
Odysseus does not want to deal with anymore of his men eating the lotus flower so he warns them now so that they know what will happen. Odysseus
is warning his men not to eat the lotus flower because when anyone eats it tempts whoever eats it to stay there. Odysseus wants to be home and wants
his men to go home with him, so he is protecting them by warning them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does not want them to suspect a thing. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is aiding Odysseus throughout this plan. Odysseus does not want the

spares another's food when he has more than plenty" (Fitzgerald, 68). Odysseus is disguised as a beggar and he goes to get bread, his bread at that,

Odysseus from Hero to Villain One of the more famous characters of the ancient Greeks, Odysseus, has been written about for millennia. Homer
composed an epic poem entirely about him. Dante wrote about Odysseus while describing his journey through the afterlife in Inferno. These two
writers, though describing the same man, portray him in different lights – Homer lauding him as a valiant hero and Dante condemning him to burn for
eternity. Each portrayal is a product of the different times in which the two authors lived. Through how the two authors abbreviate, augment, and tell
the story of Odysseus, their personal values on acts such as lying, sacrifice, and the capabilities of mankind against the gods ... Show more content on

Whereas Homer's Odysseus receives a seat of honor at the table of a foreign king, Dante's spends eternity burning in cramped quarters.
In each portrayal of Odysseus, the two differ not only in how he is viewed, but what the reader gets to view about him. Curiously absent from the
Odyssey is the account of how the Trojan Warreally ends. Homer had already dedicated one epic to the War, and then tells the return from it in this
epic, but does not give the reader the closure of explaining how it ended. An obvious reason is how the deed of capturing the city with the Trojan
Horse was less than heroic. Homer valued the in–your–face toughness of the andres of the ancient world, and in his epics spares no detail in describing
many Greeks and Trojans to paint them as he–men. His failure to include the fall of Troy in the Odyssey is no accident, and stems from the fact that
the strategy by which it occurred runs counter to the values of classical heroism. In Homer's Greece, a real man would not have to trick his enemies to
defeat them. The omission is a concession by Homer to admit that Odysseus was not nearly heroic as Achilles and that there is no virtue in dishonesty.
While Homer brushes the fall of Troy under the rug, Dante harps on it to the extent that the Horse becomes the reason Odysseus burns in one of the
deepest parts of Hell.

Odysseus Is A Hero
In book 12 of The Odyssey by Homer Odysseus is portrayed as a hero. In the story he is told by Circe that he will find an island with many cattle. She

one of you must take a solemn oath that if he meet with a herd of cattle or a large flock of sheep, he will not be so mad as to kill a single head either,
but will be satisfied with the food that Circe has given us." Odysseus is a hero because he is able to resist the temptation of killing the cows because he
knows it is best for everyone. However, his crew is not able to resist and eat the cattle. This shows how strong Odysseus's moral values

Odysseus In The Odyssey
Trouble. Pain–giver. Hated one. These all seem to be phrases used to describe an especially troubled villain, not ones which we would expect to be
applied to a known hero such as Odysseus, who endures unimaginable hardship, years of captivity, a shipwreck and bad luck before finally returning
home, triumphant. The above adjectives and phrases are exactly what the name "Odysseus" means. Odysseus survives many trials and tribulations in
order to fulfill his one wish; to return home to his wife and son and re–assimilate into his erstwhile life back home in Ithaca. Why would Homer, the
author of "The Odyssey," choose to paint his hero as someone who spends his life in misfortune? It is to teach us that no matter how close we are to
the Gods, we have little control over fate, but we can control how we respond to the trials and tribulations that fate or human experience, puts into ...

This is an example of someone who is triumphing despite the will of the Gods and the burden of his name.
Odysseus is a man described as Polytropos, or, a "man of many ways" (In–class phrase).
This is evident in his journey – there is nothing that can be described as straightforward in the travels of Odysseus. From being held captive on an
island to being blown off course by a careless mistake of his men when he is close to home, Odysseus, time and time again, proves that he is the
epitome of someone who is polytropos.
Odysseus is a man who is blessed to know some Gods and cursed to know others. For example, Poseidon curses Odysseus' fate while Athena is
helpful throughout the journey of Odysseus. It can be argued that Odysseus is cocky and that he thinks that he will be able to succeed easily because
of his relationship to the Gods, but we see, through his relationship with Poseidon, that one can be just as easily cursed by the Gods as blessed by

Odysseus Cocky
"The One–Eyed Giant's Cave" by Homer gives the reader some insight on the type of person Odysseus is. In this book, Odysseus tells the stories of
his experiences in a bragging manner. Odysseus tells the stories of the times he and his men were in Ismarus, the land of the lotus fruits, and the land
of the Cyclopes. While in Ismarus, Odysseus and his men attempt to take over the land until it starts conflict and ignites a war. Although he loses
some men, he still manages to escape and he and his crew end up in the land with the lotus eaters. Here Odysseus's men are given lotus fruits to eat
which puts them in some kind of trance. The men have no desire to leave or do anything because all they want to do is eat the fruit. Again, Odysseus...

Every time he gets himself into a bad situation he manages to escape and pull himself out, this is the clever side of Odysseus. Because Odysseus
is so cocky he believes that he can do whatever he pleases which always lands him in a different kind of trouble. After everything that Odysseus has
done and even after losing men he brags about his experiences to the Phaeacians. It is clear that Odysseus wants his name to be known and he
wants to be known for doing great things. Odysseus has a lot of pride which can be a good thing but also his downfall. In this case, his pride was a
good thing because he believed in himself enough to come up with plans and follow through with them. It was very clever of him not to kill
Polyphemus right away but instead come up with a plan. It was also clever of him to get Polyphemus drunk and tell him that his name was
"Nobody" so that no one would come in to help him and to escape on the bellies of his sheep so that he would not be able to hear them. Odysseus's
pride can also be a downfall because he wants his name known so badly that it causes him bad karma. In this case, after attacking Polyphemus,
blinding him, and escaping; he still feels the need to reveal his true identity. This causes Polyphemus to reach out to his father Poseidon and seek

Characteristics Of Odysseus
The arrogant but clever Odysseus
"How do you like the beating that I gave you, you damned cannibal" (9.397–398)? This quote is from The Odyssey by Homer. This story is about the
main character Odysseus and takes place after Odysseus defeated the Trojans in the Trojan War. After defeating the TrojansOdysseus is trying to get
back to his home Ithaca. The story also mentions the cleverness and arrogance of Odysseus. Odysseus shows these traits in the confrontation with
Polyphemus and the Sirens.
Odysseus is arrogant. For example, he said to Polyphemus "How do you like the/ beating that I gave you, you damned cannibal" (9.397–398).

Odysseus had the idea to get Polyphemus drunk. Polyphemus then asked the name of Odysseus and he said his name is Nohbdy. This would help
them escape because they would then blind the Cyclops, and he would have in his mind that Nohbdy blinded him. This shows that Odysseus is
clever because if Odysseus did not think to say my name is Nohbdy and that his name was Odysseus, then it could have caused future
inconvenience for Odysseus and his crew. Especially with the cyclopses neighbors and Poseidon. This also shows that Odysseus is clever because
if, Polyphemus knew his real name was Odysseus and his neighbors asked who did this to him then everyone would know Odysseus speared
Polyphemus and blinded him. In addition, Odysseus is clever when he knew that they were entering the land of the sirens so he, "carved a massive
cake of beeswax into bits and laid it thick on their ears" (12.28–39,43–44). This shows that Odysseus is clever because with the beeswax on their ears
they would not be able to fully hear the singing voices of the sirens. Odysseus and his crew will not be faced with temptation because of this ear
protection. However Odysseus did not have this ear protection, but he was tied up which shows his cleverness as well. Also, he asked his crew to
untie him while the sirens were singing, which shows Odysseus was tempted and might have died if he was not clever beforehand.
In conclusion, Odysseus is clever but arrogant. He shows this in many

Odysseus : A Hero
Odyssey Argument Essay Some may believe a hero is a person who fights evil and saves people. In reality, it is more than than that. A hero is
someone who fights for what they believe in, they are courageous, fight for the greater good, and above all, would sacrifice their life to save the lives
of many. For example, in TheOdyssey, a hotshot is shown in the life of Odysseus. While many believe Odysseus was a great figure and leader, he
was far from that. He failed his crew, and for one reason only, he was not the chieftain his men needed. More specifically, the results leading to the
announcement that Odysseus was not an epic hero was mostly due to his personality. Odysseus did not value the opinions of his men, or lives of
his men, as the reader was lead first to believe. "Why not take these cheese, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run
for it? We'll drive the kids and lambs abroad" (Homer 8). While in the land of cyclopes, Odysseus' men told him to leave the cave and take all of
the cyclops' belongings. However, Odysseus did not listen, he wanted to see what else the cyclops had to offer, so he risked the lives of his men
for his personal needs. Time and time again Odysseus, the "epic hero" and "brilliant leader," risked his men's lives for little or no reward. This is
shown again later in story, as where his impulsiveness, arrogance, and greed lead to another reason why he is not suited with the description of an
epic hero. In the Odyssey, Homer wrote Odysseus' words, "Cyclops if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him
Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes' son, whose home is Ithaca!" This quote shows Odysseus' arrogance after he blinded the cyclops.
Believing he had defeated the cyclops Odysseus decided to stroke his ego and reveal his name and put his men at risk. With this not well thought out
idea, it caused the rest of Odysseus' journey to be cursed by Poseidon. Without his men's best thoughts in mind, Odysseus decided getting recognition
was better than safety. Not to mention, after these events, Odysseus was shown as a more of an unlike leader and hero when his men soon realized
what kind of man Odysseus is. "Remember

The man of twists and turns is a fitting name for Odysseus, due to how he reacts and acts upon situations. Odysseus has his intelligence to thank for
all the problems he has found himself in, which results in him being known for his slyness throughout kingdoms and the heavens. Instead of always
pulling out his sword whenever he gets the chance, he thinks of a strategy and does not always depend on his strength to get him out of sticky
situations. He uses his cleverness to help him escape cyclops', gods, and goddesses' wraths. Odysseus is known for the use of his intuition instead of his

Odysseus and his crew settled down inside the cave and waited for the cyclops to return. When he returns to the cave they plead to him to let them
be a guest in his home and tell him that Zeus protects them, but the cyclops does not fear the gods so he kills two of the crew and keeps the rest as
prisoners. Odysseus and his crew cannot escape because there is a giant boulder they cannot move blocking the exit of the cave. Odysseus knows that
they cannot kill Polyphemus because then they would never be able to leave because he is the only one who can move the boulder. Odysseus devises
a plan to escape by tricking Polyphemus into getting drunk, and then telling the cyclops that Odysseus' name is, "Nobody–that's [his] name,"(9. 410).
Eventually Polyphemus passes out drunk, that is when Odysseus and his crew blind him. Polyphemus calls out for help so his neighbors come
and ask him what happened and he says, "Nobody's killing me now by fraud and not by force!"(9. 455). His neighbors leave because they do not
believe that someone is injuring him. Odysseus comes up with a plan to hide in the wool of Polyphemus's rams and when the cyclops lets the rams
out of the cave the crew will escape and leave the island. This situation shows how intelligent Odysseus truly is, and why he deserves the title of the
man of twists and turns. A hero needs to be a quick thinker and chose the best times to strike. Odysseus kept a leveled head throughout the whole time

suitors"(15.197–200) This made Telemachus hopeful but suggests the fate of the suitors back in Ithaca, which has been suggested throughout the story.
This gives Telemachus some closure on his father's homecoming.
30. CHARACTERIZATION & PLOT
As powerful and worthy as Odysseus is, he still needs Athena's help at almost every step during his return to power. Athena must first go to
Telemachus and tell him to "press Menelaus, lord of the warcry, to speed [him] home at once" to get past the suitors' ambush and

Essay On Odysseus
For the Ancient Greeks, Odysseus was seen as a great hero. Also known as Ulysses to the Romans, was a very important character in Homer's The
Odyssey. He was the father of Telemachus, and spouse of Penelope. He was the great King of Ithaca. The Ancient Greeks perceived Odysseus as a
hero due to his intelligence, his capabilities, and how the ancient beliefs of heroism distinguished him. Odysseus' intellect helped create a hero image
for the Ancient Greeks.Throughout the story Odysseus continuously uses his intelligence and manipulation to get himself out of trouble. For example,
In Book Nine of The Odyssey, Odysseus is telling a story oh how The Cyclops asked Odysseus his name and he replied "Nobody–that's my
name"(9.410). Odysseus and a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Odysseus fit perfectly to the early ideas of the heroic. The Ancient Greeks believed heroes to be honorable, noble, strong, and intelligent. Odysseus
showed these qualities when Calypso offered him the chance to be immortal. Though the offer tempted him, Odysseus declined. The fact that Odysseus
declined something that most people would kill for, shows he is honorable and loyal to his family. It shows he would rather go back to Penelope and
Telemachus, the people that need him, rather than stay alive forever with a "bewitching nymph". In addition, Odysseus followed many of the
"qualifications" the Ancient Greeks had for war and glory within heroism. Ancienthistory.abc–clio.com states, the Odyssey insists that Odysseus–aided
by his patron Athena, goddess of victory (Od. 13.386–88)–masterminded the stratagem that doomed Troy: the Trojan Horse." The Trojan horse was a
plan that helped the Greeks defeat the Trojans in the Trojan war. The Ancient Greeks saw Odysseus as a war hero as he highly influenced the Greeks
win in the war. Futhermore, Odysseus was seen as a role model to the Ancient Greeks. Ancienthistory.abc
–clio.com says, "heroes generally enshrine
within themselves qualities people generally admire." Odysseus impressive qualities were seen as a goal for the Ancient Greeks, they wanted to be
more like him. Odysseus was a hero the ancient Greeks for multiple reasons. He was a

Odysseus Mistakes

  • 1. Odysseus Mistakes Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride. Odysseus's journey home started when he was getting ready to set sail and leave Troy after the Trojan War. Odysseus shouts how he solved the war all by himself without any help from the gods. He is arrogant about their victory which angers Poseidon. Poseidon, along with other gods, curses his journey home. Odysseus and his men land on the shore of cyclops island. They get trapped in a cave by Polyphemus, the cyclops son of Poseidon. Odysseus tells the cyclops ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Odysseus Changes The term "dynamic" is often used in literature to describe a character who changes drastically from one point in the story to another. When reading "The Odyssey" an epic poem by Homer, we see that our protagonist, Odysseus, changes throughout the course of the novel. This essay will argue how he changes, and also what changes him, such as his travels, his relationships, and how fate and the Greek gods affect and change him. From the start of the novel, we find Odysseus on the far off island of Ogygia with the goddess Calypso, this is ten years after he had initially left to go and fight in the Trojan way. Odysseus leaves this place to go to the Island of the Phaecians, but has trouble on his way and is humbled when he is almost killed by Posiedon, god of the sea. Since we are seeing the end of his journey at first, we can learn from the phaecians about what Odysseus has done even before he left for troy. We see that despite being the great hero, Odysseus doesn't participate in the Phaecians games but he refuses because of his grief. "On that cue, the noble prince strode up before Odysseus, front and center, asking, 'Come stranger, sir, won't you try your hand at our contests now? If you have skill in any. When Polyphemus eats two of Odysseus's men, "He knocked them dead like pups." (Page 220, Homer) the crew knows that he is trouble. Odysseus gets the giant drunk, and when the cyclops asks Odysseus what his name is, he says that he is "Nobody". The men shove a sharpened stick into the Cyclops's lone eye and escape. This Cyclops, being Poseidon's son, was not someone that Odysseus should have crossed. We also see Athena, daughter of Zeus, take pity on Odysseus, and helps him and Telemachus many times, though disguising herself as mentor when talking to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Characteristics Of Odysseus A Greek Hero is a man or women, usually of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his or her bold exploits, and favored by the gods. In the book The Odyssey by the poet Homer, the Greek Hero Odysseus and his crew are thought to never come home after 20 years since fighting in the battle of Troy by his family and the people of Ithaca. The poor town is stricken by a coma of grief for their lost ruler. Greedy suitors wanting to marry Odysseus wife Penelope, harass her, Disrespect Odysseus palace by eating all his food and take everything from hi. This has been happening for 3 years. Soon the reader finds out he is actually alive and has been on his way to get home. Throughout the crews journey they have some problems along the way. Odysseus leadership is tested throughout all their adventures in the journey. Odysseus shows qualities of good leadership by being instructive and well spoken, however he is arrogant and puts his men in danger. Odysseus is a good leader because he is honest with his crew about what he wants and needs from them. In book nine , when Odysseus and his men are in the Cyclops's cave and have plan to stab him in the eye, "'and I told my men to draw straws to decide to witch of them would share the risk with me– lift that stake into his eye while he was asleep'. They drew straws and came up with the very men I myself would have chosen. There were four of them, and I made five" (Book 9 lines 325–331). The fact that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Characteristics Of Odysseus Have you ever wondered how people would describe a leader? While Odysseus showed many characteristics that a leader should show, he also shows many that a leader shouldn't. Odysseus is the leader of the Trojan army, who goes on a journey to get back home to Ithaca after winning the Trojan war, to see his wife, Penelope and his son Telemachus again. During his journeyOdysseus is told that he will be the only survivor out of hundreds of his crew members. However, Odysseus neglects to tell this information to his crew with the worry of his crew wanting to end their journey. You would think that a leader who puts his team through dangerous events would be affected as well, and would choose the option the go down with his crew, and to not choose to be the only one who survives. While many people describe Odysseus as a loyal, and honest leader, he makes many poor decisions that prove this otherwise. Some may say that Odysseus didn't share this information for the sake that they would freak out, and not try to get home at all. First of all, Odysseus sailed to the land of the cyclopes where he was hoping to find food. Odysseus and his men find cheese and other food safety. But Odysseus didn't leave after that. Odysseus and a few of his men then come upon a cave, when soon after that they meet Polyphemus. Odysseus had the chance to leave the island with the cheese he was looking for in the first place, but he ended up putting his men in danger. By the end of the journey on the ... • 5. Characteristics Of Odysseus In classical literature, heroes are normal people that have a certain trait or quality that distinguishes them from everyone else. In The Odyssey, Odysseus captivates the audience with his cleverness, heroism, and cunning, but away at Ithaca lies a dormant neglected, and powerful character, Penelope. Penelope isn't the classical hero, she does not slay great beasts or liberate cities, but in her own right, she proved to be equal, if not greater than the great Odysseus. Through her cunning, virtue, loyalty, and vigilance. Penelope established herself as not just a counterpart, but a greater character than the hero himself. There are several traits and qualities that made Odysseus the character and hero he is and because of his circumstances, he could put those on display. In his dilemma with Polyphemus, he had to use his cleverness and intelligence to trick cyclops so he could escape from the cave. He also maintained vigilance. After Circe warned him, in book 12, that if he hoped to survive he would have to sacrifice some of his men he scoffed at the idea and instead tried to save and protect them on. He failed of course, but despite his shortcomings, it is very commendable because he very well could have simply saved himself, but he shows strong character as he tried to maintain a certain level of vigilance. Furthermore, Odysseus was virtuous and loyal to an extent. During his journey, he ran into two seductresses', Circe and Kalypso, both of which he had an affair with. ... Be that as it may, the suitors, driven by Antinous, plan to trap him upon his arrival. As Telemachus tracks Odysseus' trail through stories from his old companions in–arms, Athena orchestrates the arrival of Odysseus from the island of the excellent goddess Calypso, whose detainee and beau he has been throughout the previous eight years. Odysseus sets cruise on a stopgap pontoon, yet the ocean god Poseidon, whose anger Odysseus caused before in his enterprises by blinding Poseidon's child, the Cyclops Polyphemus, invokes a tempest. This task of keeping his men alive is made easier by the fact that Odysseus is naturally a heroic person and leader. He is willing to do or go anywhere to ensure the safety of his men and a higher chance of arriving at their home, Ithaka. Thus, throughout the course of Book 10, Odysseus has shown to readers that he justifies the traits that originates from being a brave and caring leader. To start, Odysseus meets the qualities that comes with being a courageous leader by willing to fight anyone for the safety of himself and his crew. Nevertheless, it was Odysseus smart mind that helped the Greeks conquer Troy with the Trojan horse, not as much as his physical strength. These are only some of Odysseus many strengths. Odysseus's natural tendency under pressure is to think his plan through and analyze the circumstance quickly and accurately. For example, when he and his men were stuck in the Cyclops cave, the crew picked up their swords and were ready to fight, yet wise Odysseus remained calm and told them to lower their weapons, for who would roll away the giant stone doorway if they killed him? Instead they got him into a drunken stupor and gouged his eye out. Successfully their plan worked and they safely made it out of the deadly cave. Another situation in which Odysseus remained calm was when he had to endure watching the horrible suitors mistreat his house, family, and world. He lived by the rule that there is always a certain time and place for anger. Nonetheless, Odysseus's natural tendency under pressure is to remain calm, cool, and collected. • 10. Delusional In Odysseus Why does Odysseus see himself in those delusions? In my perspective, Odysseus, the ruler of Ithaca and a Greek ruler of Troy, is such a character that does not seem as delusional as Ajax, yet there are some characteristics within him, which consequently make him view himself as delusional. Unfortunately, completing this question thoroughly was quite difficult, as Odysseus did not provide many statements. Nonetheless, to begin with, in comparison to Ajax, this ruler does not allow his feelings of hatred over power his conscience, as despite the fact that he knew of Ajax's motive to destroy him, he remained quite calm. Specifically, in the text, Odysseus exclaims to Athena, "I am circling round for signs of my enemy, Ajax, the shield bearer. He is the man I have been tracking, no one else. Last night he carried out an unimaginable crime," yet he has not embarked on drastic measures to compromise Ajax's safety and being. (Dutta, 3) Moreover, I was not able to find evidence to prove that Odysseus is per say delusional, rather the fact, that he is obscure and battles with his own emotions. To begin with, when Athena was allowing for Ajax to be present in front of Odysseus, allowing him to make his statement, Odysseus exclaimed, "Athena, what are you doing? Don't call him out! ... Don't, for God's sake! Let him stay inside!", it seems to be delusional and ironic, as words before he stated, "He is the man I was tracking, no one else ... I volunteered to take on this task ... Odysseus uses intelligence to guide him on his tricky journey home to Ithaca establishing that he is a hero. When Odysseus and his crew land on the land of the Cyclops, they get trapped in a cave with a human–eating Cyclops named Polyphemus. Odysseus uses his intelligence to get out of the disastrous situation by getting the Cyclops drunk and then blinding Polyphemus by using a "stake with its fiery tip" (Homer 9.443) and thrusting it into the single eye on the Cyclops. Odysseus' keen sense of intelligence allows him to predict that Polyphemus would try to get help from his Cyclops neighbors so he plans ahead telling Polyphemus, "Nobody––that's my name. • 25. Reflection Of Odysseus Trying to decipher a person is a difficult task, perhaps impossible. We can, however, observe their actions, their experiences and their resemblance to other people to make some progress in comprehending them. Deciphering Odysseus is especially strenuous, for he is shown as a crafty liar who tricks others to get what he wants. Additionally, we cannot tell where the truths end and the lies begin. Consequently, we might not be able to wholly answer who Odysseus is but if we are to understand the Odyssey, we first have to understand Odysseus. Homer has constructed Odysseus as a complex character who is capable of molding himself into different forms to get the best out of his surroundings. Despite this complexity, Homer has given us enough clues to be able to recognize his actions. Of these clues, some are explicit and obvious, others are implied and can be deduced via his speeches and his acts. The explicit ones are easy, he is described to be, among other things, wise, kind and resourceful. The proofs of these can be seen numerous times in the text and thus be taken at face value. The real difficulty starts when we move past the explicit to the implicit. To grasp his nature, we have to observe the other roles in the book who share parts of his experiences, personalities or aims. Consider Telemachus. Despite the clear difference between his and Odysseus` stature, other people like Nestor and Menelaus have no trouble accepting him to be the son of Odysseus after hearing him ... We start to put our own needs first and others second. But what if we weren't always like this? The odyssey is a perfect example of what happens when we don't have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseus and Polyphemus fail to understand each other leading to some unfortunate results. Polyphemus shows almost no empathy in his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without empathy pain is inevitable.Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclops when comparing how different his lifestyle is to Polyphemus'. For example when describing how the Polyphemus lives he says in disgust, "He was quite unlike any man who eats bread, more like some wooded peak in the high hills, standing out alone apart from the others."(9.190–192) It is apparent from this quote that Odysseus does not respect those who work on their own. He thinks that Polyphemus is uncivilized and a lesser being just because his lifestyle is different from that of Odysseus'. In addition Odysseus distances himself from the cyclops by comparing their size, describing the cyclops as, "so huge he cannot possibly be man". • 30. Odysseus In The Odyssey Odysseus is the king of Ithaca and is sent to Troy to fight the Trojans. He is at war for 10 years. After the war was over he was very arrogant. As a result, the gods send Odysseus to a hero's journey to teach him a lesson. In the epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, the hero Odysseus uses his wits and strength of character to make it home after a twenty year absence. Odysseus has very good knowledge about the land of the lotus eaters and its purposes. Odysseus shows a great amount of wits and strength as well as leadership with his men. Odysseus warns his men that one little thing will lead to their doom. Zeus sends a storm which sends Odysseus and his men to the land of the lotus eaters. Odysseus says, "clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home" (Fitzgerald, 602). Odysseus does not want to deal with anymore of his men eating the lotus flower so he warns them now so that they know what will happen. Odysseus is warning his men not to eat the lotus flower because when anyone eats it tempts whoever eats it to stay there. Odysseus wants to be home and wants his men to go home with him, so he is protecting them by warning them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He does not want them to suspect a thing. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is aiding Odysseus throughout this plan. Odysseus does not want the suitors to know he has returned. Antinous says, "Get over, stand in the passage! • 31. Analysis Of Odysseus Kyle Hoffmann CPLT 2010 Paper 3 Odysseus from Hero to Villain One of the more famous characters of the ancient Greeks, Odysseus, has been written about for millennia. Homer composed an epic poem entirely about him. Dante wrote about Odysseus while describing his journey through the afterlife in Inferno. These two writers, though describing the same man, portray him in different lights – Homer lauding him as a valiant hero and Dante condemning him to burn for eternity. Each portrayal is a product of the different times in which the two authors lived. Through how the two authors abbreviate, augment, and tell the story of Odysseus, their personal values on acts such as lying, sacrifice, and the capabilities of mankind against the gods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whereas Homer's Odysseus receives a seat of honor at the table of a foreign king, Dante's spends eternity burning in cramped quarters. In each portrayal of Odysseus, the two differ not only in how he is viewed, but what the reader gets to view about him. Curiously absent from the Odyssey is the account of how the Trojan Warreally ends. Homer had already dedicated one epic to the War, and then tells the return from it in this epic, but does not give the reader the closure of explaining how it ended. An obvious reason is how the deed of capturing the city with the Trojan Horse was less than heroic. Homer valued the in–your–face toughness of the andres of the ancient world, and in his epics spares no detail in describing many Greeks and Trojans to paint them as he–men. His failure to include the fall of Troy in the Odyssey is no accident, and stems from the fact that the strategy by which it occurred runs counter to the values of classical heroism. In Homer's Greece, a real man would not have to trick his enemies to defeat them. The omission is a concession by Homer to admit that Odysseus was not nearly heroic as Achilles and that there is no virtue in dishonesty. While Homer brushes the fall of Troy under the rug, Dante harps on it to the extent that the Horse becomes the reason Odysseus burns in one of the deepest parts of Hell. ... • 32. Odysseus Is A Hero In book 12 of The Odyssey by Homer Odysseus is portrayed as a hero. In the story he is told by Circe that he will find an island with many cattle. She also states that if him or his men eat these cattle he will only return to Ithaca after all his men die. Odysseus warns his men of this and says "Each one of you must take a solemn oath that if he meet with a herd of cattle or a large flock of sheep, he will not be so mad as to kill a single head either, but will be satisfied with the food that Circe has given us." Odysseus is a hero because he is able to resist the temptation of killing the cows because he knows it is best for everyone. However, his crew is not able to resist and eat the cattle. • 33. Odysseus In The Odyssey Trouble. Pain–giver. Hated one. These all seem to be phrases used to describe an especially troubled villain, not ones which we would expect to be applied to a known hero such as Odysseus, who endures unimaginable hardship, years of captivity, a shipwreck and bad luck before finally returning home, triumphant. The above adjectives and phrases are exactly what the name "Odysseus" means. Odysseus survives many trials and tribulations in order to fulfill his one wish; to return home to his wife and son and re–assimilate into his erstwhile life back home in Ithaca. Why would Homer, the author of "The Odyssey," choose to paint his hero as someone who spends his life in misfortune? It is to teach us that no matter how close we are to the Gods, we have little control over fate, but we can control how we respond to the trials and tribulations that fate or human experience, puts into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an example of someone who is triumphing despite the will of the Gods and the burden of his name. Odysseus is a man described as Polytropos, or, a "man of many ways" (In–class phrase). This is evident in his journey – there is nothing that can be described as straightforward in the travels of Odysseus. From being held captive on an island to being blown off course by a careless mistake of his men when he is close to home, Odysseus, time and time again, proves that he is the epitome of someone who is polytropos. Odysseus is a man who is blessed to know some Gods and cursed to know others. For example, Poseidon curses Odysseus' fate while Athena is helpful throughout the journey of Odysseus. It can be argued that Odysseus is cocky and that he thinks that he will be able to succeed easily because of his relationship to the Gods, but we see, through his relationship with Poseidon, that one can be just as easily cursed by the Gods as blessed by ... • 34. Odysseus Cocky "The One–Eyed Giant's Cave" by Homer gives the reader some insight on the type of person Odysseus is. In this book, Odysseus tells the stories of his experiences in a bragging manner. Odysseus tells the stories of the times he and his men were in Ismarus, the land of the lotus fruits, and the land of the Cyclopes. While in Ismarus, Odysseus and his men attempt to take over the land until it starts conflict and ignites a war. Although he loses some men, he still manages to escape and he and his crew end up in the land with the lotus eaters. Here Odysseus's men are given lotus fruits to eat which puts them in some kind of trance. The men have no desire to leave or do anything because all they want to do is eat the fruit. Again, Odysseus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every time he gets himself into a bad situation he manages to escape and pull himself out, this is the clever side of Odysseus. Because Odysseus is so cocky he believes that he can do whatever he pleases which always lands him in a different kind of trouble. After everything that Odysseus has done and even after losing men he brags about his experiences to the Phaeacians. It is clear that Odysseus wants his name to be known and he wants to be known for doing great things. Odysseus has a lot of pride which can be a good thing but also his downfall. In this case, his pride was a good thing because he believed in himself enough to come up with plans and follow through with them. It was very clever of him not to kill Polyphemus right away but instead come up with a plan. It was also clever of him to get Polyphemus drunk and tell him that his name was "Nobody" so that no one would come in to help him and to escape on the bellies of his sheep so that he would not be able to hear them. Odysseus's pride can also be a downfall because he wants his name known so badly that it causes him bad karma. This story is about the main character Odysseus and takes place after Odysseus defeated the Trojans in the Trojan War. After defeating the TrojansOdysseus is trying to get back to his home Ithaca. The story also mentions the cleverness and arrogance of Odysseus. Odysseus shows these traits in the confrontation with Polyphemus and the Sirens. Odysseus is arrogant. Polyphemus then asked the name of Odysseus and he said his name is Nohbdy. This would help them escape because they would then blind the Cyclops, and he would have in his mind that Nohbdy blinded him. This shows that Odysseus is clever because if Odysseus did not think to say my name is Nohbdy and that his name was Odysseus, then it could have caused future inconvenience for Odysseus and his crew. Especially with the cyclopses neighbors and Poseidon. This also shows that Odysseus is clever because if, Polyphemus knew his real name was Odysseus and his neighbors asked who did this to him then everyone would know Odysseus speared Polyphemus and blinded him. In addition, Odysseus is clever when he knew that they were entering the land of the sirens so he, "carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and laid it thick on their ears" (12.28–39,43–44). This shows that Odysseus is clever because with the beeswax on their ears they would not be able to fully hear the singing voices of the sirens. Odysseus and his crew will not be faced with temptation because of this ear protection. However Odysseus did not have this ear protection, but he was tied up which shows his cleverness as well. Also, he asked his crew to untie him while the sirens were singing, which shows Odysseus was tempted and might have died if he was not clever beforehand. In conclusion, Odysseus is clever but arrogant. He shows this in many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Odysseus : A Hero Odyssey Argument Essay Some may believe a hero is a person who fights evil and saves people. In reality, it is more than than that. A hero is someone who fights for what they believe in, they are courageous, fight for the greater good, and above all, would sacrifice their life to save the lives of many. For example, in TheOdyssey, a hotshot is shown in the life of Odysseus. While many believe Odysseus was a great figure and leader, he was far from that. He failed his crew, and for one reason only, he was not the chieftain his men needed. More specifically, the results leading to the announcement that Odysseus was not an epic hero was mostly due to his personality. Odysseus did not value the opinions of his men, or lives of his men, as the reader was lead first to believe. "Why not take these cheese, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it? We'll drive the kids and lambs abroad" (Homer 8). While in the land of cyclopes, Odysseus' men told him to leave the cave and take all of the cyclops' belongings. However, Odysseus did not listen, he wanted to see what else the cyclops had to offer, so he risked the lives of his men for his personal needs. Time and time again Odysseus, the "epic hero" and "brilliant leader," risked his men's lives for little or no reward. This is shown again later in story, as where his impulsiveness, arrogance, and greed lead to another reason why he is not suited with the description of an epic hero. In the Odyssey, Homer wrote Odysseus' words, "Cyclops if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes' son, whose home is Ithaca!" This quote shows Odysseus' arrogance after he blinded the cyclops. Believing he had defeated the cyclops Odysseus decided to stroke his ego and reveal his name and put his men at risk. With this not well thought out idea, it caused the rest of Odysseus' journey to be cursed by Poseidon. Without his men's best thoughts in mind, Odysseus decided getting recognition was better than safety. Not to mention, after these events, Odysseus was shown as a more of an unlike leader and hero when his men soon realized what kind of man Odysseus is. "Remember ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Transformation Of Odysseus The man of twists and turns is a fitting name for Odysseus, due to how he reacts and acts upon situations. Odysseus has his intelligence to thank for all the problems he has found himself in, which results in him being known for his slyness throughout kingdoms and the heavens. Instead of always pulling out his sword whenever he gets the chance, he thinks of a strategy and does not always depend on his strength to get him out of sticky situations. He uses his cleverness to help him escape cyclops', gods, and goddesses' wraths. Odysseus is known for the use of his intuition instead of his might to overcome difficult obstacles thrown in his path. Odysseus and his crew settled down inside the cave and waited for the cyclops to return. When he returns to the cave they plead to him to let them be a guest in his home and tell him that Zeus protects them, but the cyclops does not fear the gods so he kills two of the crew and keeps the rest as prisoners. Odysseus and his crew cannot escape because there is a giant boulder they cannot move blocking the exit of the cave. Odysseus knows that they cannot kill Polyphemus because then they would never be able to leave because he is the only one who can move the boulder. Odysseus devises a plan to escape by tricking Polyphemus into getting drunk, and then telling the cyclops that Odysseus' name is, "Nobody–that's [his] name,"(9. 410). Eventually Polyphemus passes out drunk, that is when Odysseus and his crew blind him. Polyphemus calls out for help so his neighbors come and ask him what happened and he says, "Nobody's killing me now by fraud and not by force!"(9. 455). His neighbors leave because they do not believe that someone is injuring him. Odysseus comes up with a plan to hide in the wool of Polyphemus's rams and when the cyclops lets the rams out of the cave the crew will escape and leave the island. This situation shows how intelligent Odysseus truly is, and why he deserves the title of the man of twists and turns. A hero needs to be a quick thinker and chose the best times to strike. Odysseus kept a leveled head throughout the whole time while they were in the cave, and quickly created a plan to get him and his crew out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Telemachus In Odysseus Eumaeus welcomed Odysseus into his home; the audience sees right away that Eumaeus respects custom. Eumaeus misses Odysseus and explains that "longing for him, him that wrings [his] heart"(14.167). He has remained very loyal to Odysseus, and has therefore grown to hate the suitors. From what Eumaeus has explained, Penelope's loyalty is emphasized since she has ignored the ignorant suitors. They are all waiting for him to come home which he now realizes since his absence is truly affecting everyone in his life. 28. Book 15 29. INSIGHT Right when Telemachus was about to head home, the gods sent a sign: an "eagle swooped down from the crags where it was born and bred... snatched that goose fattened up for the kill inside the house"(15.194–196). Helen interpreted the sign and explained that "just so, after many trials and roving long and hard, Odysseus will descend on his house and take revenge–unless he's home already, sowing seeds of ruin for that whole crowd of suitors"(15.197–200) This made Telemachus hopeful but suggests the fate of the suitors back in Ithaca, which has been suggested throughout the story. This gives Telemachus some closure on his father's homecoming. 30. CHARACTERIZATION & PLOT As powerful and worthy as Odysseus is, he still needs Athena's help at almost every step during his return to power. Odysseus showed these qualities when Calypso offered him the chance to be immortal. Though the offer tempted him, Odysseus declined. It shows he would rather go back to Penelope and Telemachus, the people that need him, rather than stay alive forever with a "bewitching nymph". In addition, Odysseus followed many of the "qualifications" the Ancient Greeks had for war and glory within heroism.
