1. Why You Should Never Quit
I’msure thatmany of us can agree that life isgreator can be greatdependingonif we playourcards
correctly.I’malsosure that we all can agree that fromtime to time thingscanget extremely
overwhelmingtothe pointthat we feel likequitting. Now whenIrefertoquittinginthisarticle,I’m
talkingabout“givingup”inany way, shape or form insomethingthatwe mustdoor wantto do inorder
to betterourselvesorour situation.Thatwasa mouthful, buttake the time toread itwell and
understand.
Thisweekhappenedtobe one of those weeksforme—asinitbeingoverwhelming.Inormallydon’t
mindtakingon a heapof tasks at once,but thisweekwaswaytoo much—orsoI thought.Between
workingfull-time,managingthiswebsite,finishingupmybook,andmakingmusic,I was this close to
givingupsome of my dutiesandonlytakingonwhat I couldhandle comfortably.Ieventuallygotoverit,
and got everythingdone ontime—butwhat’simportantwasthe lessonsIlearned alongthe way. Here
are a fewthingsforyouto considerbefore youfollowthroughwithyourplantoquit,or give up.
Everyone ThinksOf Quitting
One of myregularcustomersI see at leastonce everytwoweeksorsohappenstowork as part of
Disney’sImagineers. He hasto be one of the most hard-workingindividualsthatIpersonallyknow.
Disneyisalwayscomingoutwithnewerattractionsandtechnologies,butnotmanyof us thinkabout
the work thatgoesinto them.Manyattractionstake overa year or more to complete.Andhundredsof
employeesare necessaryjustforone project, soyoucan probablyimagine how muchworkgoesintoit.
Thisman (I still don’tknowhisname) prettymuchworksall dayandwhenhe goeshome at night, guess
what? He’sstill working.Dayinand dayout withouta break,he saidhisfirstbreakintwo yearswill be
aroundChristmastime.Withouteverevenhavingtime toeata propermeal,he hasbecome the
epitome of hardworkand passiontome.
So aftergoingthroughmy whole quittingordeal duringthe week,he walksthroughthe door. The first
thingI ask him—rightafterIsaidhello,of course—was“Doyoueverfeel likequitting?”Ihadto know.
Afterall,he worksmuchharder thanI probablyeverwill—ifhe neverfeltlike givingupthensomething
mustbe terriblywrongwithme!He immediatelyresponded,“Of course,Iactuallyfeltlike quittingafew
timesjustthisweekalone.”Thenhe proceededtodropmore knowledgethanIwaspreparedfor.He
continued,“Everyonethinksof quitting,it’sanatural part of growth.People oftenequate ‘thoughtsof
quitting’withquitting, buttheyare notthe same. It’show youhandle these thoughtsthatmatterthe
most.”That was exactlywhatI neededtohear.Itwas as if the anti-quittingGodhadsenthimin justto
tell me that.
Everyone thinksof quitting;anda lotof the time, these thoughtsnevercease.Theysubside andarise
fromtime to time, all we have todo is learntomanage themand neveract on them. How can we
manage them?We must learnthe art of changingour perspective(whichyoucanread abouthere) and
stayingmotivated.Eventhe mostsuccessfulmanfeelslike quittingfromtime totime,it’sanatural
thoughtwe mustall eithergetusedtoor learnto banish.
There Is NothingThatYou Can’tDo
I’mserious.Anythingcanbe done if youcontinue topushthroughwitha perseveringmind. Donotquit.
The sayinggoes“Don’t bite off more thanyou can chew,”butwhenthingsgetoverwhelmingforme,I
2. try to rememberYogananda’srenditiononthe saying:“Ibelieve youshouldbite off more thanyoucan
chew,andthenchewit!”
You Will RegretIt
Quittingisone of those thingsthatyou will prettymuch always regret.Iknow people whohave quit
theirjobsand nowtheyare strugglingtofinda new one and wishingtheyhadn’tquitinthe firstplace.I
knowpeople whoquitcertainphysical fitnesscommitmentsandwhentheygrew tooheavyorsick,they
wishedtheyhadkeptgoingwhentheyhadthe chance.I know people whohave droppedoutof school
thinkingtheywouldgobackat a latertime—butnow can’tfindthe motivationtoreturn.
What If ThomasEdisonHad Quit
There are somany successful menandwomenwhoprobablyhadfargreaterreasonstowant to quit
than youdo, andtheydidn’t.Whatif Thomas Edisonhadquitin inventingthe lightbulb?Inhisearly
years,histeachershadtoldhim thathe was“too stupidto learnanything.”Thiswoulddiscouragemost,
but nothim. He wentontryingto inventthe lightbulbandactuallywentthrough1000 unsuccessful
attempts! Many of us wouldhave quitafterjust50 attempts!Personally,Iwouldhave drawnthe line at
10 attempts.Butstill he didnot give up,andeventuallyhe endedupwiththe workinglightbulbwe have
today.
What if he hadstoppedat histhousandthunsuccessful attempt?Chancesare manyotherinventors
wouldn’twanttopickup where he leftoff astheywouldthinkit’suseless, andthe worldwouldhave
remainedlight-bulblessforquite some time longer.Of course there are manyotherwonderfulexamples
of people whowentthroughfartoomuchtrouble,butstill didnotquit—suchasHenryFordand
Socrates.So whenthe thoughtof quittingarisesinyourmind,banishitwiththisknowledgeandkeep
going!
