The short film "In Unison" follows a pair of dancers from their teenage years as dance partners through adulthood. It shows their progression from competing as teenagers to growing old together as a couple. The analysis discusses various shots throughout the film, praising shots that show the connection between the dancers or give context through details like dates. Some shots are criticized for looking unrealistic or having modern dancing. Overall, the locations, music, and editing are evaluated positively, while the sound and limited location variety receive some criticism.
2. Storyline
• In the short film ‘In Unison’ a pair of dancers, a girl
and a boy, become partners and begin competing
in dance competitions. It goes through different
stages of their lives from teenagers onwards. They
end up together and grow old as a couple
3. Shots
I think that the opening shot is quite
interesting as it fades in from the ‘noise’
shown above. The film does not just begin
abruptly, it eases into the dancing.
I like the title shot because the dancing in
the background slows down slightly as the
title appears, it made me focus more on the
name rather than what was happening in
the background.
I enjoy the costuming and the setting but I
feel as though the dancing in some shots
does not look like competitive professional
dance like it is supposed to from that time,
compared with the dancing in the next
scene. It seems quite modern, as opposed to
from the 70’s.
4. Shots
I enjoy this shot as it shows both characters
conversing but it also shows the
surroundings. I like the angle and how one
is on the stage, as she is a performer,
whereas he seems more shy.
I like how in this shot the characters seem to
have a connection and it’s shown quite
simply, they just come together.
I like the fact that each
scene shows a date in the
corner, it helps explain the
storyline and the fact that it
spans over some years.
5. Shots
I feel as though this shot could have been
more realistic as when all of the dancers are
called to the stage, only the main couple
appears and it is quite obvious that they are
alone.
This shot was quite effective as the acting in
it was really good. The kiss seemed quite
real and it showed the connection between
the two nicely.
I thought this shot gave the scene some
variety as it was of the elderly couple from
a different angle, showing their feet seemed
like it fit well as they danced around their
living room.
6. Evaluation
Actors - I think that the actors chosen to be in this short film were good choices.
The female was very confident and played the role of Emily quite well. The male
also seemed like the right choice for Thomas because later on, the elderly Thomas
seems quite quiet, like the younger Thomas. I feel like the casting of the older
couple was perfect because you could really see their connection.
Locations - I feel as though the locations fit well, like the stage for the competition
and the home for the end scenes. However, some of the scenes in between could
have been more varied, you could tell how close all of the scenes were to the
school.
Sound - I think the music was chosen very well, however there were a few
problems with the sound of wind and the dialogue being quiet.
Edit - The editing of this short film was excellent, it had different angles in each of
the scenes, and in the end when the elderly couple are dancing, it does not just
focus on their faces, it moves to their feet, suggesting how important dance is to the
storyline.
