Wonder Woman Analysis
Since their inception, comics have been a way to raise public awareness and introduce readers to
current events plaguing the nation, and to represent the struggle of minorities. Often, the characters
addressing such issues are superheroes who are both inspirations in their successes and relatable in
their struggles. As the first recognized female superhero, Wonder Woman faces and overcomes
challenges as she opens a door for women into the world of comics. William Marston's goal for
Wonder Woman was to create an independent heroine with feminist undertones who could succeed
on the same level as the popular male heroes of the time. He wanted "to set up a standard among
children and young people of strong, free, courageous womanhood; and to ... Show more content on

Wonder Woman was a "feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a
good and beautiful woman," perfect for the face of the fight for women's rights and recognition
(187). The strong female superhero became the face of Ms. Magazine, a women's rights publication,
with the iconic cover staring the character and proclaiming "Wonder Woman for President,"
(centerfold, last page). She also appears in an underground comic book titled "It Ain't Me Babe" that
was published in July 1970 by "the Women's Liberation Basement Press in Berkeley, California,"
alongside other popular female comic characters who rebel against their reliance on men: "Veronica
ditches Archie for Betty, Petunia Pig tells Porky to fix his own dinner, and Supergirl tells Superman
to get lost" (centerfold, "It Ain't Me Babe"). Wonder Woman's participation in this feminist rebelling
reinforced her role as an icon in the feminist movement. The character has internal references that
allude to feminist ideas directly and are integral in her representing the movement. The way she is
powerless when bound in chains by a man symbolizes feminist propaganda and protests involving
chains restricting women and women breaking free of their bindings. On page 85 of The Secret
History of Wonder Woman, the image of Lou Rogers tearing off bonds representing the anti–female
sentiment in politics is situated

Stereotypes In Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is such an inspiring film. This movie shows the how the stereotypical gender roles
should be. Men should be comprehensive, and they should support women just like Steve did
whenever Diana wanted to go into the battle field. Where Diana comes from all women are viewed
as strong independent girls. As they are growing up they started training, so they became really
strong. Diana was very eager to learn how to fight. Which that is how women should be raised.
Instead women are expected to dress in a feminine way and be sympathetic. I'm not saying women
shouldn't be like that but if you make a female feel like she can accomplish anything, that'll be better
for them. As for men they're expected to be more barbaric and dauntless doing ... Show more

Whenever Steve's plane crashed, and Diana found him she was very curious to know about where he
came from. Since she had never seen a man, she would just read about them she wanted to know
everything. As Steve told her his whole situation Diana wanted to go with him to defeat Aries. That
was her main goal. Whenever they were in the meeting and no one could understand Dr. Poison's
book since it was written in Sumerian, Diana was the only one who knew how to read Sumerian.
The room was filled with men and they were all shocked as Diana read the book because they didn't
believe her. Dr. poison was very intelligent as well, her role in the movie as a scientist was a great
illustration of a smart woman. Forbes conducted a study to show who was smarter women or men.
The results were that women were smarter. "While women's overall EQ score is just a couple of
points higher than men's, this is a statistically significant difference that shows that women have
greater skill." Throughout history women have always been thought less than men, women are really
smart. An example of a very smart woman is Alice Paul she was the leader who lead a campaign for

Superman when someone flew out of nowhere and saved superman. At first Superman thought it

Characteristics Of Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman Finally Flying! When you think of superheroes you think of heroes such as Batman,
Superman, or the Flash, but one hero that was left in the shadow was Wonder Woman. Wonder
Woman has struggled for years to get off the ground even with her invisible jet. She has had this
ongoing struggle because of her constant comparison with her male counterparts such as Batman,
Superman, and the Flash.
Although superheroes are fictional they all have their own unique backstories. Wonder Woman has a
very different backstory than her male counterparts. Wonder Woman was born onto Paradise Island
to her mother Hippolyta. Wonder Woman's given name was Diana, and this what she was called her
entire life on the island with the other Amazon women. Wonder Woman then found her way into the
human world whenever a pilot named Steve Trevor crashes onto her island, and she wins the rights
to escort him back home. One of her male counterpart Superman was born on the planet of Krypton,
but his parents sent him out into space as their planet was being destroyed. Superman eventually
wound up crashing into earth, and being raised by a farming couple instead of his biological parents.
The farming couple would raise the boy by the name Clark Kent. Another hero that had to grow up
without his biological parents was Batman or more formally known as Bruce Wayne. Batman
parents were killed during a mugging right in front of him on night in Gotham City. After his
parent's death, he was raised by the

My Wonder Woman
My Everyday Wonder Woman My mom has always been a superhero in my eyes ever since I was a
little kid. She continually amazes me with her talents, and her hardworking nature. There are many
words I could use to describe her, however "Wonder Woman" does a good job of summing it up.
Although she doesn't carry a sword gifted by Zeus, or a golden lasso that forces you to tell the truth,
my mom has a lot of similarities with the "Wonder Woman" movie's Diana Prince. For example,
both women don't understand society, have high morals, and are strong natured. In the movie, Diana
Prince left the only home she had ever known. She knew that she would never be able to return to
the secluded island where all of her friends and family lived. She was taken into the heart of
London. The city had no beauty compared to her island with the clear blue water and the green
mountains. In London people buzzed in the busy streets. The air was polluted with a grey smog that
hung over the city like a sad cloud. Diana being thrown into a completely different culture was
perplexed. When they went shopping for clothes she didn't understand how people could wear such
over the top attire that was popular in that day, or how people were supposed to fight in a full length
skirt with heels. Although her partner, Steve Trevor, tried to explain to her what was going on, she
did not grasp the quirky ways of London. My mom, like Diana, has a difficult time understanding
society. She is often confused about the

Field Report Assignment
I saw Wonder Woman at the Museum of Modern Art near. The film was made in June 2017 and was
directed by Patty Jenkins. The movie of Wonder Woman provides a backstory of Princess Diana
prior to her appearance in Batman vs. Superman. Story takes place during World War I where she is
on a quest to defeat Aries after believing he is the reason the war is taking place and has the
intentions of ending the war. Women empowerment was a major theme that emerged from the
narrative. The style of this movie is the Classical Hollywood Style. With the Classical Hollywood
Style, the format follows a linear narrative with a cause and effect The style that was present was
Hollywood Realism. This style is common in many movies through the usage of continuity editing,
cause and effect for narrative progression, and linear storytelling. This style served the narrative by
explaining the story of Wonder Woman. Even though the film begins with a prologue, the narrative
of the movie was about Wonder Woman's life and her impact of her ending the world war and the
relationships she creates during the process. To advance the narrative, Jenkins provides cause and
effect situations that will draw the characters to different situations. These situations allow each of
the characters to develop in order to be able to accomplish their respective goals and deadlines thus
progressing narrative. This would represent how the style serves the narrative of Wonder Woman.

Stereotypes Of Wonder Women
In what ways does Pattie Jenkins' 2017 Wonder Woman eschew superhero stereotypes and present a
strong female narrative?
Although superhero movies have become some of the most popular and successful movie
instalments of the 21st century most of these movies have been about men and focused on their
trials and triumphs while also creating and perpetrating negative stereotypes of women. The female
superhero movie falls into one of three categories: the victim, the tomboy and the bombshell. In the
first category the victim constantly finds herself at the centre of trouble and requires the main man
in the movie to swoop in and save her, she is a passive and weak character. The bombshell tends to
be highly sexualised, wearing tight clothes and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The male characters in the movie support and help Diana but at no point do they overshadow her or
make her rely on them. Steve Trevor is given his own storyline, important in its own right but never
more important than Diana's quest. Diana declares herself independent from the beginning of her
journey, flirting with Steve but also putting him in his place, 'They came to the conclusion that men
are essential for procreation, but when it comes to pleasure... unnecessary.' Right from the beginning
Diana is on her own journey, separate to that of the male characters, and she is able to rely on her
own strength. Although Steve Trevor is constantly urging Diana to avoid danger and risks, she
frequently ignores him, placing other people's safety above her own and defending other's, not being
defended, 'I will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.'1 Diana proves her independence
and strength repeatedly throughout the film, leading men into battle, running through No Man's
Land and attacking soldier's terrorising a town, always despite being urged into safety by her male
counterparts. 'I cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost!'1 Gal Gadot's characterisation of Diana
also circumnavigates the victim stereotype, Diana's innocence and naiveté of the world of man never
overshadowing the strength and power she constantly evokes, her walk

Analysis Of Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is an inspirational hero for both women and men – she represents bravery and
strength while simultaneously demonstrating the importance of treating people with justice and love.
Gloria Steinem touches on these characteristics in her essay, mentioning the uniqueness of Wonder
Woman's actions comparative to other male and violent characters (267). Undoubtedly, Wonder
Woman is a complex and valiant character who has been challenging sexism and stereotypes for
nearly an entire century. More importantly, she shines light on a significant but often overlooked
issue in the way society regards female characters; that for female characters to be taken seriously –
or as seriously as male characters – they must adhere to unusually ... Show more content on

For example, Superman, one of the most popular comic book characters, is often depicted wearing a
skin–tight suit through which every muscle and bulge is clearly visible. However, his outfit does not
draw attention away from his ideas or actions, nor does it make people question the seriousness of
the character. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman and fellow heroes are constantly criticized for being too
revealing, and the unusual standard of beauty and sexuality which they are forced to adhere to
diminishes the individuality of female characters.
Furthermore, strength is one of the most highly scrutinized aspects of female characters, one which
most definitively highlights the difference in how male and female characters are viewed. Male
characters revered regardless of whether they have superpowers or extraordinary skills. In contrast,
if a female character is strong, she is unrealistically powerful; if a female character is weak or does
not have powers, she is deemed fragile and incapable. For instance, Wonder Woman is an incredibly
powerful superhero; with the combination of her training, powers, and weapons, she is a force to be
reckoned with. However, her strength often overshadows other female characters and inadvertently
supports the idea that a female character must be powerful to be useful or taken seriously. Male
characters do not experience

Since children are so easily affected by things they see in their childhood, having discriminatory

To some, wonder woman is regarded as a feminist icon. However, O'Reilly does not believe so
because of the submissive themes that her creator included in the comics.
Though Wonder Woman is one of the most popular female superheroes who seemed to be equal to
her male counterparts, she had to demonstrate if she was worthy enough to become a superhero
through set trials. Wonder Woman was not born into her title; she had to earn it unlike all the male
superheroes that came before and after her. Born Princess Diana from the Amazon, she had to
compete in a series of extremely difficult physical trials and once she proved her worth in a final life
or death challenge, the title of "Wonder Woman" was bestowed upon her. O'Reilly gives multiple
examples in her article about the differences male and female superheroes have. For instance, the
popular Superman comics came out a few years earlier. Clark Kent's choice to fight crime was never
questioned or challenged. He did not have to prove his abilities to a higher authority in order to
become a superhero. He simply chose to wear a cape and enforce justice. O'Reilly explains, "...The
resolution of heroic trials, in their various forms, differs significantly

American history is filled with an abundant amount of fictional pop culture icons, ranging from
web–slinging vigilantes to detectives in bat costumes. These characters have not only evolved media

many characters may have detoured from their original values and ethics, one has remained a prime

Charles Moulton (pseudonym of Psychologist William Moulton Marston), with art by Harry G.

DC to give her the lead feature in a new anthology series – Sensation Comics. An ardent believer in
feminism, and a great admirer of Margaret Sangster, founder of Planned Parenthood, Marston

the daughter of Queen Hippolyta, who sculpted her from clay. The statue was given life by
Aphrodite and powers (wisdom, strength, speed, etc.) by the other Greek Goddesses. As Marston
wrote, Wonder Woman " ... is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I
believe, rule the world". Wonder Woman's Golden Age exploits begin with her winning a contest to
determine who will leave the idyllic Amazon homeland of Paradise Island to help fight the growing
menace of World War. She remained a feminist icon until Marston's death in 1947 (She didn't

The Odyssey And Wonder Woman
Representation of Women
In the book The Odyssey and the movie Wonder Woman there are different portrayals and
viewpoints on how women are treated and represented in their society. In The Odyssey women are
seen as either a Goddess, wife, mother, or seductress. They are characterized as weak and dependent
on men. All of the women in the book are seen either helping or delaying Odysseus journey back
home to Ithaca. In Wonder Woman women are characterized as strong and independant. There is an
island called Themyscira that is inhabited by female warriors called amazons. These two works have
similar yet different viewpoints on women and their roles in society.
In both The Odyssey and Wonder Woman there are Goddesses. We have Athena, Goddess of
Wisdom and warfare in, The Odyssey, and Diana, the princess of Themyscira, in Wonder Woman.
Throughout the book Athena is a strong warrior, but the only times she is mentioned is when she is
helping Odysseus. At the beginning of the book Athena is seen persuading the other Gods to let
Odysseus travel back home, and for the rest of the book she is helping his son, Telemachus, and
Odysseus himself. Athena goes to Odysseus house disguised as a man to help his son take back
control of the house from all of the suitors wanting to marry his mother. Athena also helps Odysseus
"plot the slaughter of the suitors" (Homer 315). Without Athena's help it is likely that Odysseus
would have never made it back home safely to his wife and son. Athena

The Symbols Of A Wonder Woman As A Wonder Woman
She is a dark–haired beautiful woman who is a warrior armed with a lasso of truth (Cocca 124–126
Wonder Woman); she is Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's manifestation in comic books
demonstrates a symbol of a strong woman with her own power. Inspiring girls to change in their
own way through raising awareness for important issues meanwhile providing a positive role model
that Wonder Woman stands for. Some worry about the effect that images of bondage may counter
Wonder Woman's strong feminine role. However, she breaks free of the constraints of social norms
that allow her to become even stronger. She is more than a pretty face and has inspired real world
change. Wonder Woman is a role model for girls as a symbol of female power with inspiring
empowerment despite critiques that her image is permeated with bondage and sexualization.
Wonder Woman provides girls with a symbol of female strength and power. Comics are narrative
image driven stories, not literal, thus allowing for various interpretations. They are rich with
symbolism, color, and emotion that creates the rich stories of these heroes (Spieldenner 238). What
symbolic representation does Wonder Woman have? Batman's image is reducible to a bat symbol;
(Spieldenner 238) then reducing Wonder Woman into a single symbol – it would be a woman. Over
the years, she has changed costumes, colors, and origins thought storylines meanwhile always being
a female representation (Yonkey Spieldenner 238 Cocca 98–101). The one thing that Wonder
Woman is known for is female representation. However, there are critiques that Wonder Woman
may not provide a role model for all girls because she does not always represent girls of color.
Pérez's Wonder Woman was more racially diverse as were the Amazons (Cocca 98). However,
Wonder Woman is often remembered as a white female which may lie in the Greek myths of the
Amazons. Greek myths depict Amazon women as white (Mayor 118). This is an explanation to the
possible invasive representation of a white Wonder Woman. There are more issues to fair
representations, however, they are beyond the scope of this paper. Comic characters are not just their
images, but also in their actions (Spieldenner 238) through the genre that allows children to

"It's not about 'deserve'. It's about what you believe. And I believe in love." These words said by
Diana of Themyscira are relevant in every aspect of our current society. The movie "Wonder
Woman" takes stereotypically feminine or weak values like love and empathy and makes them a
source of power. In a day and age that is so barren of these principles, it is important to remember
that forgiving and caring for people is not about whether they deserve it or not. Instead, it is about
having the strength to forgive and love them despite their imperfections. Gal Gadot portrays these
morals in Diana Prince perfectly, showing the meaning of being a true hero–someone who cares
enough to reach out to those who cannot fight for themselves. It is within her desire for justice for
these people that she finds the power to defeat the evil that she had so tirelessly hunted. This evil
was Ares: the embodiment of war, hate, and selfishness. It is pure emotion that gives her the final
push to be able to destroy the hate and war in our already broken world. Despite Diana being a
goddess, higher and mightier than all, she had the most humanity in the movie. And while Diana
knows that humans are not totally good, she understands that we can be better. The message here is
clear: to feel is not to be fragile; rather, it is to be strong. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

instead he earns her love by proving himself by helping in the hunt down Ares. She also does not

Captain Steve Trevor's 2009 character differs vastly in comparison to his 1975 counter–part. In the

The Wonder Wom The Complications Of The Wonder Woman
"Wonder Woman" has been at the center of controversy ever since its premiere in June. Major
controversies revolved around the movie's feminist message, the women–only screenings, and the
nationality of its leading actress. In an interview with The Guardian published in August, James
Cameron, the director of "The Terminator" and "Titanic," called "Wonder Woman" "a step
backward" and commented that it had nothing "groundbreaking." "All of the self–congratulatory
back–patting Hollywood's been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided," he said, "she's
an objectified icon, and it's just male Hollywood doing the same old thing." His criticism received
an immediate rebuke from Patty Jenkins, the director of "Wonder Woman." Jenkins responded with
a post on Twitter. "James Cameron's inability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or stands for, to

Feminism In Wonder Woman
During my high school career, my parents had allowed my uncle to live with us. At one point, I got
upset at something inappropriate he said and I got up to leave. Immediately he got up and walked
after me yelling. I locked myself in my room and listened as he shouted to my parents that I was a
"stuck–up bitch who needed to learn some god–damn respect". I told myself that I would not be
quieted or spoke down on for having my own opinions. This idea that men are superior to women,
and women need to be submissive to them has been ingrained into our society. With the recent
release of Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, many people have called into question how
well Wonder Woman–otherwise known as Diana in the movie– relates to feminism, and represents a
positive image or inspirational figure for women and young girls in today's society. One of these
people is Zoe Heller, who in turn wrote the article "God's Gift to Men". While I don't believe this
was meant to be the typical inspiring feminist movie that tells women to act like "ballbusters". I
believe that Heller over–analyzed this movie, and tried to make it into her idea of what feminism is:
where women preach about how they should be treated and how others should view themselves.
Heller started off by providing a quote from the New York Times where it stated that they would be
ending a campaign to make Wonder Woman into an inspirational figure. She then addresses Diana's

The Wonder Wom The Transformation Of The Wonder Woman
Published by All Star Comics on October 1941, the day Marston's creation of the first female
superhero revolutionized the world. From a love triangle surged the greatest representation of a
powerful and independent woman, which shaped American society. Wonder Woman a fictional
character that became an icon of pop culture and women in general. American politics from the
years 1890s – 1980s faced social reforms and new ideals, a dominant force in Lepore's book prove
that more than a decade of strife , influenced heavily the shaping of Wonder Woman. Diana of
Themyscira, daughter of queen Hippolyta and Zeus would bring hope, beyond the fictional world to
the land of the free and home of the brave. Politics in the United States is one of those topics that
can have several meanings depending on who is defining it, thus because many things can influence
the person who is defining it. In this case, it is to be avoided at all costs definitions or words that are
hard enough to pronounce, that is for the analysts, and political science professors, as it has been
scientifically proven that learning is more captivating when it is tied with something or someone we
know or have seen before. First we are going to start off, by mentioning some of the outstanding
political sections from that time period, before we get to the influence it had on the creation of
Wonder Woman. Woodrow Wilson had been elected as president in 1912, he promised a government
based on, democratic principle.

Wonder Woman As A Hero
Hero of the New Age Wide eyed, heart pounding, glued to their chairs while the credits roll after an
exhilarating and masterful movie adaptation, one name and one certainty remains distinctly clear:
millions of people worldwide just found their new favorite superhero. Wonder Woman, Amazonian
Princess of Themyscira, daughter of Zeus, arguably one of the most contemporary and progressive
heroes of our time. In her remarkable quest to save the world in the midst of World War I along with
her partner Steve Trevor, Diana Prince becomes an unyielding symbol of the feminist movement and
an advocate for love and hope. She is both vulnerably human and astonishingly superhuman.
Wonder Woman is a force to be reckoned with. In line with the classic hero, Beowulf, she showcases
a myriad of hero archetype attributes. She is descended from a powerful warrior family, embarks on
an epic journey from her home, is willing to sacrifice herself and possesses supernatural strength
and combat skills. She has grit. Yet, she fights not just for material riches or eternal glory, but for
righteousness and compassion. Even as she witnesses "the worst of this world, and the best" and all
"the terrible things men do to each other in the name of hatred," she determines that "only love can
save this world" (http://www.imdb.com). This belief forms the foundation of her resolve to keep
fighting. She seeks to protect the vulnerable, such as the women and children suffering in the harsh
war conditions. She

Feminist Representation Of Mythology In Wonder Woman's...
The recent Wonder Woman cinematic remake has made major waves as a prime example of the
increasing feminist influence on modern society. Despite the story's comic book origin, it contains
many references and elements of ancient Greek myth. Mythology and other forms of storytelling
have remained a constant reflection of societal values of that period, and remain so to this day. In the
movie, Diana is a representation of ancient myth and the slow shift in societal preconceptions
towards the ideology of the modern day.
In the 2017 film Wonder Woman, the protagonist Diana can trace her origins back to the original
comics in the 70's. However, many of the people closest to her in the film can be found in ancient
Greek myth, with slightly altered stories. In this modern myth, Diana's mother is Hippolyta, queen
of the Amazons. The Amazons as a whole are repeatedly mentioned in ancient myth as fierce female
warriors with Hippolyta as their fearless leader. Famously Hippolyta was given a girdle by her father
Ares, which Heracles was sent to retrieve as one of his impossible tasks, thus marking one of the
first myths where the Greeks and Amazons interacted. This differs greatly from the film where Ares
is the enemy rather than the father of the Amazons, reflecting a less barbaric and perhaps even
positive outlook on the origins of the Amazons in the film. In this modern take Ares is shown as evil
personified and positioning the Amazonians against him shows them as heroes rather than

"The most famous heroine of all time," says DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman has it all, from
beauty to brains to brawn. She was known as Diana, the Princess of the Amazons, before she
became known as Wonder Woman. She is similar to male superheroes, such as Superman, in many
ways, but there are definitely differences. I think we can all agree that the most obvious difference is
Wonder Woman is a girl. She teaches love, and she fights for peace. She doesn't fight unless it is
necessary. She stands for feminism and represents an evolving female. Wonder Woman was the
Princess of the Amazons. She was born and raised on what is known as Paradise Island. This is
where she learned how to fight like a warrior. She received her powers from the Greek gods. Once
she received the powers, she decided to go to America to help fight against the criminals and villains
in the world. Superman was from a planet called Krypton. His dad sent him to Earth on a rocket ship

Wonder Women: The Untold Story of American Superheroines is a film about the history and
importance of the famous DC Comic character, Wonder Woman. A psychologist named William
Moulton created Wonder Woman in 1941. When she was first created, she was the ideal feminist
icon. She did not rely on a man and always saved herself. Wonder Woman's creation was at a time
while the United States was at war. During World War II, women took their places in the working
industry while the men were off at were. Wonder Woman's character resembles the attitude towards
women and the need for them to work and be seen as equals during wartime. Her creation was one

Women are now portrayed as "stabbing each other in the back" and being "overly sexualized"
(Wonder Women). Portraying women as evil and overly sexualized sends out the wrong message to
viewers. It sends messages that women cannot be the heroes. If they are not villains then they are
often in need of rescue. The women seen on TV and comic books are wearing revealing outfits. As
the film points out, this leads to "sexiness becoming the way of signaling empowerment". Young
girls deserve better than to think dressing provocatively is a way of showing empowerment.

consumers the companies are trying to target. However, this sends a terrible message to women. The

Greek Mythology Heroes
In this paper I will analyze two characters in two separate works, one from a literary text and one
from a film. The focus of this paper will be on heroes that have a relationship to an element of
mythology. I will use the character Odysseus from Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey" and the
character Wonder Woman from the American superhero film "Wonder Woman". In this essay I will
analyze the gender, appearance, actions, and roles that these heroes have. Throughout this essay, I
will also discuss the negative characteristics that both these heroes have, such as their violent actions
towards others. Heroes possess numerous qualities that make them great, however, there are certain
qualities of a hero that are consistent throughout Greek mythology; bravery, intelligence, and
strength. These qualities are significant to these two Greek Mythologies because these heroes are
known to bravely risk their lives for others, using their wisdom to guide them, all while fighting
strongly for what they believe in. This paper will serve to prove that regardless of the gender of each
of these personas, the characteristics that define a hero remain consistent.
To begin, I would like to provide the reader with some background information that pertains to these
heroes. Wonder Woman is a superhero who is also known as Princess Diana, and she grew up on the
Amazon Island of Themyseria. Wonder Woman has been granted superhero powers by Zeus, to fight

Wonder Women : The Symbols Of The Wonder Woman
Since her inception, Wonder Woman has often been controversial and conflicting. The Encyclopedia
for Gender and Society defines her as "many things to many people: an icon of feminism, televised
entertainment, a sex symbol, a fantasy, a threat, and an inspiration." As the first female superhero,
this iconic character is now the third longest–running comic in history ("Wonder Woman"). Often
hailed as a symbol of all that is feminist, Wonder Woman's image has been used to promote feminist
activism, but some argue that the very same image is highly sexualized, white, and features a history
of violent themes.
Wonder Woman originated from the mind of William Moulton Marston, a psychologist who wanted
to create a character to be "psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, [he
believed], rule the world." Charlotte Howell, writing for the Cinema Journal, claims that it is for this
very reason that Wonder Woman "is inherently disruptive to masculine superhero franchise
branding" (Howell). In 1941, when Wonder Woman made her first appearance in the world, Marston
was trying to combat what he deemed "bloodcurdling masculinity" rampant in the ever–popular
Superman comics (Cavna). Ever since he fell from Krypton in 1938 from the minds of Jerry Siegel
and Joe Shuster, Superman (and others like him, such as Batman) has furthered the existence of
normative and toxic masculinity ("Wonder Woman"). They have perpetuated the belief that men
should be, and are, aggressive

Feminism In Wonder Woman
Who doesn't love a good superhero? The perfect figure, the spandex suit, the flowing cape, flawless
looks, and the powers we can only dream of having. Superheroes have been around for ages now,
leaving an everlasting imprint on our hearts. It is no secret that males dominate the superhero
industry; both the heroes themselves and those who create them. Superman, Batman, Ironman, and
Spiderman have become the top heroes of all time; there is nothing wrong with them holding the
spotlight, but female heroes are underrepresented. There are notable female heroes, but they tend to
be drawn with a busty figure that few women are naturally blessed with, and show little emotional
rational in fights. Take Black Widow (Marvel) for example, anyone would love for her figure and
kick–ass moves. Wonder Woman is our hero of the hour, she has made her way onto the big screen;
casting her into the spotlight more than ever. She screams fights for love, promotes peace, is a
beacon of hope, and screams feminism. What's not to love? The new movie released on June 2,
2017, has called more attention to the American–spirited, Amazonian woman than ever before. The
movie is the first fully female directed movie, Patty Jenkins brings a great female to the big screen.

that should be idealized? Feminism isn't some new, hip trend. It has taken control of mainstream

Portrayal Of Wonder Woman
The Rise of Wonder Woman Comic books have been used as a mirror of society to show or
influence the behavior of people. Wonder Woman was a breakthrough from all the masculine
superhero franchise at the time of her conception and was created with the intentions of being
propaganda for the new type of woman during the second wave of feminism. The comic world
which was filled with male heroes, readily welcomed the first comic heroine to make an appearance
in the DC Comic book universe. "The new character was immediately successful. Marston's
idealized Amazon–capable, strong, but traditionally "feminine"–seemed to strike the perfect chord
for a country at war" (Stanley, 2005). Wonder Woman has been reinvented many times throughout
the years, since her origins to recent contemporary films. Not only were her costume changed, but
major themes and storylines were altered to "reflect both patriarchal society's need to redefine
according to cultural and economic circumstances" (Stanley, 2015). Wonder Woman has become a
successful female character and global icon, balancing traditional masculinity and femininity using
her superhero identity and her alter ego as Diana Prince. This paper will be focus on the comic book
portrayal of Wonder Woman, including an overview of Wonder Woman through the comics, how

Symbolism In Wonder Woman
Armed with her bulletproof bracelets and magic lasso, Wonder Woman is a popular icon of female
strength in a universe of male superheroes. Going through her history however, shows that she
depicts a complicated heroine who is more than just a female comic book character. Wonder Woman
was created by William Moulton Marston, who was a psychologist and a lawyer, and believed that
women's capacity for love, nurture, and self–sacrifice would make them better leaders than men. He
created Wonder Woman in order to gain his vision of female empowerment. While the character's
feminism is unquestionably open to judgement, her creator's desires were clear. Nevertheless,
Wonder Woman has grown into an important symbol of the feminist movement and ... Show more

Nevertheless, Wonder Woman's costume has got multiple meanings and symbolisms. In the 70s,
women activists had protested against the oppressive nature of sexist beauty and fashion standards.
Wonder Woman's bathing suit symbolized the objectification of women for male viewers at the Miss
America Pageant. The symbolic contrast between the Pageant and her costume has been apparent in
both comic books and the TV series. It has been referred by Wonder Woman as the "garb of justice".
(Ball, 2016) While the outside world judges her for the way she dresses, Diana is surprised at their
reaction and has commented on it, both in the comics and in the animated series "Justice League".
She promoted the feminist argument that women's modesty should not be reduced to standards of
dress. The Amazons did not see a need to cover a woman's body completely in order for them to be
respected. To judge a woman by the male–defined sense of modesty seemed unreasonable. Lynda
Carter, the actress who played Wonder Woman in the CBS's series which lasted for three seasons,
quoted in the US magazine that she hated the way men looked at her in this role, and that she never
meant to be a sexual object for anyone but her husband. (Keating,

Sexuality In Wonder Woman
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer. Sexuality, and how people identify. Our sexualities are
who we are and in this society we are often hiding this aspect of us because we are worried how we
will be viewed if we are open about it. The media in today's society tries to hide it away and act as if
it does not exist. This is exactly the case from the recent Warner Brothers movie Wonder Woman.
Sexuality is hardly shown in the movie Wonder Woman, but is very prevalent in the comics. Wonder
Woman the movie should not hide the sexual aspects that the comics show because in the comics
she shows it is okay to be sexual, and to be proud of your sexuality. Wonder Woman has been a hero
who stands for who she is, this is shown, but the film hides her ties to bondage, a part of who she is.
Her authors found a sanctity in bondage, and gave this belief to her. As Irene Javors states, "Maston
and Peter conveyed their unique notions of liberation through bondage"(Javors 1), her two authors,
Harry Peter and William Marston both found liberation in bondage, a freeing sense in being
helpless. This concept stems from the belief of freeing yourself by letting someone else take control,
associated with the concept of submission. This concept is shown greatly in the comic via Wonder
Woman herself. She, in one comic says "On Paradise Island where we play many binding games,
this is considered the safest method of tying a girls arms" By saying this, the reader gains
information on Wonder Woman's background. She grew up on an all female island and her comment
stated above explains that they practiced bondage ties. She knew what the safest way to tie
someone's arms behind their back using rope, a common form of bondage in society. Another
example of bondage in the comics is when she states "That Velma is a clever girl– I ought to bind
her hand and foot! But if I'm gone long, tight bonds might make her uncomfortable". Diana knows
that if someone is in a bondage tie for too long that they will get uncomfortable. While yes that can
be seen as common knowledge, she says it in a manner that she knows first hand it can be
uncomfortable. With three easily found examples in the comics about Wonder Woman's ties to
bondage, it raises the

Spider–Man and Wonder Woman are not similar to the stereotypical heroes at the time, but they still
had the attributes of a true hero. In the past, Stan Lee had thought of a superhero that would be
similar to teenagers. Stan Lee wanted to construct a hero that people could relate to, and in the end
he created Spider–Man. Spider–Man simply had the same abilities as a spider. Then in 1941,
Wonder Woman made her first appearance from the mind of William Moulton Marston. William
supported women's rights since his college days, and he wanted to have equality for each gender in
all human activities. In addition, people believed that comics were bad for kids, but William
believed not. Wonder Woman's set of skills is that she could fly, had immense speed, strength, and
smarts. Additionally, Wonder Woman also wielded a lasso that could make anyone tell the truth if
caught by it, and this lasso is inspired from William's polygraph, which was able to detect lies. Three

Goodman thought that the name "Spider–Man" was a terrible choice," (1 Patel). At the time, Wonder

Wonder Woman's Feminist Journey

  • 1. Wonder Woman Analysis Since their inception, comics have been a way to raise public awareness and introduce readers to current events plaguing the nation, and to represent the struggle of minorities. Often, the characters addressing such issues are superheroes who are both inspirations in their successes and relatable in their struggles. As the first recognized female superhero, Wonder Woman faces and overcomes challenges as she opens a door for women into the world of comics. William Marston's goal for Wonder Woman was to create an independent heroine with feminist undertones who could succeed on the same level as the popular male heroes of the time. He wanted "to set up a standard among children and young people of strong, free, courageous womanhood; and to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wonder Woman was a "feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman," perfect for the face of the fight for women's rights and recognition (187). The strong female superhero became the face of Ms. Magazine, a women's rights publication, with the iconic cover staring the character and proclaiming "Wonder Woman for President," (centerfold, last page). She also appears in an underground comic book titled "It Ain't Me Babe" that was published in July 1970 by "the Women's Liberation Basement Press in Berkeley, California," alongside other popular female comic characters who rebel against their reliance on men: "Veronica ditches Archie for Betty, Petunia Pig tells Porky to fix his own dinner, and Supergirl tells Superman to get lost" (centerfold, "It Ain't Me Babe"). Wonder Woman's participation in this feminist rebelling reinforced her role as an icon in the feminist movement. The character has internal references that allude to feminist ideas directly and are integral in her representing the movement. The way she is powerless when bound in chains by a man symbolizes feminist propaganda and protests involving chains restricting women and women breaking free of their bindings. On page 85 of The Secret History of Wonder Woman, the image of Lou Rogers tearing off bonds representing the anti–female sentiment in politics is situated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Stereotypes In Wonder Woman Wonder Woman is such an inspiring film. This movie shows the how the stereotypical gender roles should be. Men should be comprehensive, and they should support women just like Steve did whenever Diana wanted to go into the battle field. Where Diana comes from all women are viewed as strong independent girls. As they are growing up they started training, so they became really strong. Diana was very eager to learn how to fight. Which that is how women should be raised. Instead women are expected to dress in a feminine way and be sympathetic. I'm not saying women shouldn't be like that but if you make a female feel like she can accomplish anything, that'll be better for them. As for men they're expected to be more barbaric and dauntless doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whenever Steve's plane crashed, and Diana found him she was very curious to know about where he came from. Since she had never seen a man, she would just read about them she wanted to know everything. As Steve told her his whole situation Diana wanted to go with him to defeat Aries. That was her main goal. Whenever they were in the meeting and no one could understand Dr. Poison's book since it was written in Sumerian, Diana was the only one who knew how to read Sumerian. The room was filled with men and they were all shocked as Diana read the book because they didn't believe her. Dr. poison was very intelligent as well, her role in the movie as a scientist was a great illustration of a smart woman. Forbes conducted a study to show who was smarter women or men. The results were that women were smarter. "While women's overall EQ score is just a couple of points higher than men's, this is a statistically significant difference that shows that women have greater skill." Throughout history women have always been thought less than men, women are really smart. An example of a very smart woman is Alice Paul she was the leader who lead a campaign for equal ... • 7. Characteristics Of Wonder Woman Wonder Woman Finally Flying! When you think of superheroes you think of heroes such as Batman, Superman, or the Flash, but one hero that was left in the shadow was Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman has struggled for years to get off the ground even with her invisible jet. She has had this ongoing struggle because of her constant comparison with her male counterparts such as Batman, Superman, and the Flash. Although superheroes are fictional they all have their own unique backstories. Wonder Woman has a very different backstory than her male counterparts. Wonder Woman was born onto Paradise Island to her mother Hippolyta. Wonder Woman's given name was Diana, and this what she was called her entire life on the island with the other Amazon women. Wonder Woman then found her way into the human world whenever a pilot named Steve Trevor crashes onto her island, and she wins the rights to escort him back home. One of her male counterpart Superman was born on the planet of Krypton, but his parents sent him out into space as their planet was being destroyed. Superman eventually wound up crashing into earth, and being raised by a farming couple instead of his biological parents. The farming couple would raise the boy by the name Clark Kent. Another hero that had to grow up without his biological parents was Batman or more formally known as Bruce Wayne. Batman parents were killed during a mugging right in front of him on night in Gotham City. After his parent's death, he was raised by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. My Wonder Woman My Everyday Wonder Woman My mom has always been a superhero in my eyes ever since I was a little kid. She continually amazes me with her talents, and her hardworking nature. There are many words I could use to describe her, however "Wonder Woman" does a good job of summing it up. Although she doesn't carry a sword gifted by Zeus, or a golden lasso that forces you to tell the truth, my mom has a lot of similarities with the "Wonder Woman" movie's Diana Prince. For example, both women don't understand society, have high morals, and are strong natured. In the movie, Diana Prince left the only home she had ever known. She knew that she would never be able to return to the secluded island where all of her friends and family lived. She was taken into the heart of London. The city had no beauty compared to her island with the clear blue water and the green mountains. In London people buzzed in the busy streets. The air was polluted with a grey smog that hung over the city like a sad cloud. Diana being thrown into a completely different culture was perplexed. When they went shopping for clothes she didn't understand how people could wear such over the top attire that was popular in that day, or how people were supposed to fight in a full length skirt with heels. Although her partner, Steve Trevor, tried to explain to her what was going on, she did not grasp the quirky ways of London. My mom, like Diana, has a difficult time understanding society. She is often confused about the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Analysis Of Wonder Woman Field Report Assignment I saw Wonder Woman at the Museum of Modern Art near. The film was made in June 2017 and was directed by Patty Jenkins. The movie of Wonder Woman provides a backstory of Princess Diana prior to her appearance in Batman vs. Superman. Story takes place during World War I where she is on a quest to defeat Aries after believing he is the reason the war is taking place and has the intentions of ending the war. Women empowerment was a major theme that emerged from the narrative. The style of this movie is the Classical Hollywood Style. With the Classical Hollywood Style, the format follows a linear narrative with a cause and effect The style that was present was Hollywood Realism. This style is common in many movies through the usage of continuity editing, cause and effect for narrative progression, and linear storytelling. This style served the narrative by explaining the story of Wonder Woman. Even though the film begins with a prologue, the narrative of the movie was about Wonder Woman's life and her impact of her ending the world war and the relationships she creates during the process. To advance the narrative, Jenkins provides cause and effect situations that will draw the characters to different situations. These situations allow each of the characters to develop in order to be able to accomplish their respective goals and deadlines thus progressing narrative. This would represent how the style serves the narrative of Wonder Woman. Makes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Stereotypes Of Wonder Women In what ways does Pattie Jenkins' 2017 Wonder Woman eschew superhero stereotypes and present a strong female narrative? Although superhero movies have become some of the most popular and successful movie instalments of the 21st century most of these movies have been about men and focused on their trials and triumphs while also creating and perpetrating negative stereotypes of women. The female superhero movie falls into one of three categories: the victim, the tomboy and the bombshell. In the first category the victim constantly finds herself at the centre of trouble and requires the main man in the movie to swoop in and save her, she is a passive and weak character. The bombshell tends to be highly sexualised, wearing tight clothes and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The male characters in the movie support and help Diana but at no point do they overshadow her or make her rely on them. Steve Trevor is given his own storyline, important in its own right but never more important than Diana's quest. Diana declares herself independent from the beginning of her journey, flirting with Steve but also putting him in his place, 'They came to the conclusion that men are essential for procreation, but when it comes to pleasure... unnecessary.' Right from the beginning Diana is on her own journey, separate to that of the male characters, and she is able to rely on her own strength. Although Steve Trevor is constantly urging Diana to avoid danger and risks, she frequently ignores him, placing other people's safety above her own and defending other's, not being defended, 'I will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.'1 Diana proves her independence and strength repeatedly throughout the film, leading men into battle, running through No Man's Land and attacking soldier's terrorising a town, always despite being urged into safety by her male counterparts. 'I cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost!'1 Gal Gadot's characterisation of Diana also circumnavigates the victim stereotype, Diana's innocence and naiveté of the world of man never overshadowing the strength and power she constantly evokes, her walk ... • 15. Analysis Of Wonder Woman Wonder Woman is an inspirational hero for both women and men – she represents bravery and strength while simultaneously demonstrating the importance of treating people with justice and love. Gloria Steinem touches on these characteristics in her essay, mentioning the uniqueness of Wonder Woman's actions comparative to other male and violent characters (267). Undoubtedly, Wonder Woman is a complex and valiant character who has been challenging sexism and stereotypes for nearly an entire century. More importantly, she shines light on a significant but often overlooked issue in the way society regards female characters; that for female characters to be taken seriously – or as seriously as male characters – they must adhere to unusually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Superman, one of the most popular comic book characters, is often depicted wearing a skin–tight suit through which every muscle and bulge is clearly visible. However, his outfit does not draw attention away from his ideas or actions, nor does it make people question the seriousness of the character. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman and fellow heroes are constantly criticized for being too revealing, and the unusual standard of beauty and sexuality which they are forced to adhere to diminishes the individuality of female characters. Furthermore, strength is one of the most highly scrutinized aspects of female characters, one which most definitively highlights the difference in how male and female characters are viewed. Male characters revered regardless of whether they have superpowers or extraordinary skills. In contrast, if a female character is strong, she is unrealistically powerful; if a female character is weak or does not have powers, she is deemed fragile and incapable. For instance, Wonder Woman is an incredibly powerful superhero; with the combination of her training, powers, and weapons, she is a force to be reckoned with. However, her strength often overshadows other female characters and inadvertently supports the idea that a female character must be powerful to be useful or taken seriously. Wonder Woman 15 October 2014 Wonder Woman Children always looking for a positive role model to have, and many end up choosing superheroes they see in their favorite comic books or ones they have seen in the media. Since children are so easily affected by things they see in their childhood, having discriminatory elements in these influential characters may be problematic. "The Wonder Woman Precedent: Female (Super) Heroism on Trial" written by Julie D. O'Reilly, was published in the Journal of American Culture in 2005. To some, wonder woman is regarded as a feminist icon. However, O'Reilly does not believe so because of the submissive themes that her creator included in the comics. Though Wonder Woman is one of the most popular female superheroes who seemed to be equal to her male counterparts, she had to demonstrate if she was worthy enough to become a superhero through set trials. Wonder Woman was not born into her title; she had to earn it unlike all the male superheroes that came before and after her. Born Princess Diana from the Amazon, she had to compete in a series of extremely difficult physical trials and once she proved her worth in a final life or death challenge, the title of "Wonder Woman" was bestowed upon her. O'Reilly gives multiple examples in her article about the differences male and female superheroes have. For instance, the popular Superman comics came out a few years earlier. Clark Kent's choice to fight crime was never questioned or challenged. He did not have to prove his abilities to a higher authority in order to become a superhero. He simply chose to wear a cape and enforce justice. O'Reilly explains, "...The resolution of heroic trials, in their various forms, differs significantly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

'42) there's an eight page story in– tended to test readers reaction to a new type of hero. Written by Charles Moulton (pseudonym of Psychologist William Moulton Marston), with art by Harry G. Peters, Wonder Woman, Amazon Princess, enters a troubled world. Positive feedback encouraged DC to give her the lead feature in a new anthology series – Sensation Comics. An ardent believer in feminism, and a great admirer of Margaret Sangster, founder of Planned Parenthood, Marston imbued his creation with qualities normally found in male heroes. Wonder Woman (nee Diana) is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta, who sculpted her from clay. The statue was given life by Aphrodite and powers (wisdom, strength, speed, etc.) by the other Greek Goddesses. • 29. The Odyssey And Wonder Woman Representation of Women In the book The Odyssey and the movie Wonder Woman there are different portrayals and viewpoints on how women are treated and represented in their society. In The Odyssey women are seen as either a Goddess, wife, mother, or seductress. They are characterized as weak and dependent on men. All of the women in the book are seen either helping or delaying Odysseus journey back home to Ithaca. In Wonder Woman women are characterized as strong and independant. There is an island called Themyscira that is inhabited by female warriors called amazons. These two works have similar yet different viewpoints on women and their roles in society. In both The Odyssey and Wonder Woman there are Goddesses. We have Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and warfare in, The Odyssey, and Diana, the princess of Themyscira, in Wonder Woman. Throughout the book Athena is a strong warrior, but the only times she is mentioned is when she is helping Odysseus. At the beginning of the book Athena is seen persuading the other Gods to let Odysseus travel back home, and for the rest of the book she is helping his son, Telemachus, and Odysseus himself. Athena goes to Odysseus house disguised as a man to help his son take back control of the house from all of the suitors wanting to marry his mother. Athena also helps Odysseus "plot the slaughter of the suitors" (Homer 315). Without Athena's help it is likely that Odysseus would have never made it back home safely to his wife and son. Athena ... • 31. The Symbols Of A Wonder Woman As A Wonder Woman She is a dark–haired beautiful woman who is a warrior armed with a lasso of truth (Cocca 124–126 Wonder Woman); she is Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's manifestation in comic books demonstrates a symbol of a strong woman with her own power. Inspiring girls to change in their own way through raising awareness for important issues meanwhile providing a positive role model that Wonder Woman stands for. Some worry about the effect that images of bondage may counter Wonder Woman's strong feminine role. However, she breaks free of the constraints of social norms that allow her to become even stronger. She is more than a pretty face and has inspired real world change. Wonder Woman is a role model for girls as a symbol of female power with inspiring empowerment despite critiques that her image is permeated with bondage and sexualization. Wonder Woman provides girls with a symbol of female strength and power. Comics are narrative image driven stories, not literal, thus allowing for various interpretations. They are rich with symbolism, color, and emotion that creates the rich stories of these heroes (Spieldenner 238). What symbolic representation does Wonder Woman have? Batman's image is reducible to a bat symbol; (Spieldenner 238) then reducing Wonder Woman into a single symbol – it would be a woman. Over the years, she has changed costumes, colors, and origins thought storylines meanwhile always being a female representation (Yonkey Spieldenner 238 Cocca 98–101). The one thing that Wonder Woman is known for is female representation. However, there are critiques that Wonder Woman may not provide a role model for all girls because she does not always represent girls of color. Pérez's Wonder Woman was more racially diverse as were the Amazons (Cocca 98). However, Wonder Woman is often remembered as a white female which may lie in the Greek myths of the Amazons. Greek myths depict Amazon women as white (Mayor 118). This is an explanation to the possible invasive representation of a white Wonder Woman. There are more issues to fair representations, however, they are beyond the scope of this paper. • 33. Wonder Woman "It's not about 'deserve'. It's about what you believe. And I believe in love." These words said by Diana of Themyscira are relevant in every aspect of our current society. The movie "Wonder Woman" takes stereotypically feminine or weak values like love and empathy and makes them a source of power. In a day and age that is so barren of these principles, it is important to remember that forgiving and caring for people is not about whether they deserve it or not. Instead, it is about having the strength to forgive and love them despite their imperfections. Gal Gadot portrays these morals in Diana Prince perfectly, showing the meaning of being a true hero–someone who cares enough to reach out to those who cannot fight for themselves. It is within her desire for justice for these people that she finds the power to defeat the evil that she had so tirelessly hunted. This evil was Ares: the embodiment of war, hate, and selfishness. It is pure emotion that gives her the final push to be able to destroy the hate and war in our already broken world. Despite Diana being a goddess, higher and mightier than all, she had the most humanity in the movie. And while Diana knows that humans are not totally good, she understands that we can be better. The message here is clear: to feel is not to be fragile; rather, it is to be strong. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 37. Essay on Wonder Woman The Wonder Years Her mission is to bring love, peace, and sexual equality to a world torn by the hatred of men. The heroine Princess Diana of Themyscira, more famously known as Wonder Woman, has gone through various reimagining and different retellings in both media and comic books. But all of these have the same basic origin. She was born and lived the majority of her life on the isolated paradise island of Themyscira, an island inhabited entirely of Amazonian women. Everything changed one day when pilot, Captain Steve Trevor crashed on the mysterious island. Soon after he crashed, as he was being held and treated on the island, Queen Hippilyta held a tournament to decide who would have the honor of escorting Captain Trevor back to the ... Captain Steve Trevor's 2009 character differs vastly in comparison to his 1975 counter–part. In the 1975 adaptation he was merely a flat characterized damsel in distress who tried to act as a symbol of the American ideal. But in the 2009 animated movie he was more fleshed out and given more characterization and more of a major role in the plot. The 2009 version of Trevor was a witty, brave, and a symbol of sexual equality. Also Steve Trevor in this movie more so acted as Wonder Woman's sidekick in the fact that many of the times in which there was action they both worked cooperatively to defeat any threat. • 39. The Wonder Wom The Complications Of The Wonder Woman "Wonder Woman" has been at the center of controversy ever since its premiere in June. Major controversies revolved around the movie's feminist message, the women–only screenings, and the nationality of its leading actress. In an interview with The Guardian published in August, James Cameron, the director of "The Terminator" and "Titanic," called "Wonder Woman" "a step backward" and commented that it had nothing "groundbreaking." "All of the self–congratulatory back–patting Hollywood's been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided," he said, "she's an objectified icon, and it's just male Hollywood doing the same old thing." His criticism received an immediate rebuke from Patty Jenkins, the director of "Wonder Woman." Jenkins responded with a post on Twitter. "James Cameron's inability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or stands for, to women all over the world is unsurprising as, though he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman," she wrote, adding, "There is no right and wrong powerful kind of woman." "Wonder Woman" is a 2017 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Wonder Woman, also called Princess Diana, is a princess who grows up on the Amazon Island of Themyscira. • 47. Feminist Representation Of Mythology In Wonder Woman's... The recent Wonder Woman cinematic remake has made major waves as a prime example of the increasing feminist influence on modern society. Despite the story's comic book origin, it contains many references and elements of ancient Greek myth. Mythology and other forms of storytelling have remained a constant reflection of societal values of that period, and remain so to this day. In the movie, Diana is a representation of ancient myth and the slow shift in societal preconceptions towards the ideology of the modern day. In the 2017 film Wonder Woman, the protagonist Diana can trace her origins back to the original comics in the 70's. However, many of the people closest to her in the film can be found in ancient Greek myth, with slightly altered stories. In this modern myth, Diana's mother is Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. The Amazons as a whole are repeatedly mentioned in ancient myth as fierce female warriors with Hippolyta as their fearless leader. Famously Hippolyta was given a girdle by her father Ares, which Heracles was sent to retrieve as one of his impossible tasks, thus marking one of the first myths where the Greeks and Amazons interacted. This differs greatly from the film where Ares is the enemy rather than the father of the Amazons, reflecting a less barbaric and perhaps even positive outlook on the origins of the Amazons in the film. In this modern take Ares is shown as evil personified and positioning the Amazonians against him shows them as heroes rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was known as Diana, the Princess of the Amazons, before she became known as Wonder Woman. She is similar to male superheroes, such as Superman, in many ways, but there are definitely differences. I think we can all agree that the most obvious difference is Wonder Woman is a girl. She teaches love, and she fights for peace. She doesn't fight unless it is necessary. She stands for feminism and represents an evolving female. Wonder Woman was the Princess of the Amazons. She was born and raised on what is known as Paradise Island. • 57. , Wonder Woman And Wonder Woman Greek Mythology Heroes In this paper I will analyze two characters in two separate works, one from a literary text and one from a film. The focus of this paper will be on heroes that have a relationship to an element of mythology. I will use the character Odysseus from Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey" and the character Wonder Woman from the American superhero film "Wonder Woman". In this essay I will analyze the gender, appearance, actions, and roles that these heroes have. Throughout this essay, I will also discuss the negative characteristics that both these heroes have, such as their violent actions towards others. Heroes possess numerous qualities that make them great, however, there are certain qualities of a hero that are consistent throughout Greek mythology; bravery, intelligence, and strength. These qualities are significant to these two Greek Mythologies because these heroes are known to bravely risk their lives for others, using their wisdom to guide them, all while fighting strongly for what they believe in. This paper will serve to prove that regardless of the gender of each of these personas, the characteristics that define a hero remain consistent. To begin, I would like to provide the reader with some background information that pertains to these heroes. • 59. Wonder Women : The Symbols Of The Wonder Woman Since her inception, Wonder Woman has often been controversial and conflicting. The Encyclopedia for Gender and Society defines her as "many things to many people: an icon of feminism, televised entertainment, a sex symbol, a fantasy, a threat, and an inspiration." As the first female superhero, this iconic character is now the third longest–running comic in history ("Wonder Woman"). Often hailed as a symbol of all that is feminist, Wonder Woman's image has been used to promote feminist activism, but some argue that the very same image is highly sexualized, white, and features a history of violent themes. Wonder Woman originated from the mind of William Moulton Marston, a psychologist who wanted to create a character to be "psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, [he believed], rule the world." Charlotte Howell, writing for the Cinema Journal, claims that it is for this very reason that Wonder Woman "is inherently disruptive to masculine superhero franchise branding" (Howell). In 1941, when Wonder Woman made her first appearance in the world, Marston was trying to combat what he deemed "bloodcurdling masculinity" rampant in the ever–popular Superman comics (Cavna). Ever since he fell from Krypton in 1938 from the minds of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman (and others like him, such as Batman) has furthered the existence of normative and toxic masculinity ("Wonder Woman"). • 69. Portrayal Of Wonder Woman The Rise of Wonder Woman Comic books have been used as a mirror of society to show or influence the behavior of people. Wonder Woman was a breakthrough from all the masculine superhero franchise at the time of her conception and was created with the intentions of being propaganda for the new type of woman during the second wave of feminism. The comic world which was filled with male heroes, readily welcomed the first comic heroine to make an appearance in the DC Comic book universe. "The new character was immediately successful. Marston's idealized Amazon–capable, strong, but traditionally "feminine"–seemed to strike the perfect chord for a country at war" (Stanley, 2005). • 73. Wonder Woman Golden Age Wonder Woman began in 1941 with the Amazon Princess Diana nursing American intelligence officer Steve Trevor back to health after he crashed on Themyscira Island. The Amazons decided that someone should go back to America with Steve to help with the battle in the outside world that was WWII. Wonder Woman won a contest which permitted her to leave Themyscira Island and head off to America with Steve Trevor. In America, Diana adopted the name "Diana Prince" and joined the army to help fight the Nazi's. Steve Trevor never knew that Diana Prince was also Princess Diana of Themyscira (kind of how Lois Lane never knew that Clark Kent was Superman). Soon after, she became secretary of the Justice Society of America reporting to Colonel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 75. Sexuality In Wonder Woman Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer. Sexuality, and how people identify. Our sexualities are who we are and in this society we are often hiding this aspect of us because we are worried how we will be viewed if we are open about it. The media in today's society tries to hide it away and act as if it does not exist. This is exactly the case from the recent Warner Brothers movie Wonder Woman. Sexuality is hardly shown in the movie Wonder Woman, but is very prevalent in the comics. Wonder Woman the movie should not hide the sexual aspects that the comics show because in the comics she shows it is okay to be sexual, and to be proud of your sexuality. Wonder Woman has been a hero who stands for who she is, this is shown, but the film hides her ties to bondage, a part of who she is. Her authors found a sanctity in bondage, and gave this belief to her. As Irene Javors states, "Maston and Peter conveyed their unique notions of liberation through bondage"(Javors 1), her two authors, Harry Peter and William Marston both found liberation in bondage, a freeing sense in being helpless. This concept stems from the belief of freeing yourself by letting someone else take control, associated with the concept of submission. This concept is shown greatly in the comic via Wonder Woman herself. She, in one comic says "On Paradise Island where we play many binding games, this is considered the safest method of tying a girls arms" By saying this, the reader gains information on Wonder Woman's background. She grew up on an all female island and her comment stated above explains that they practiced bondage ties. She knew what the safest way to tie someone's arms behind their back using rope, a common form of bondage in society. Another example of bondage in the comics is when she states "That Velma is a clever girl– I ought to bind her hand and foot! But if I'm gone long, tight bonds might make her uncomfortable". Diana knows that if someone is in a bondage tie for too long that they will get uncomfortable. While yes that can be seen as common knowledge, she says it in a manner that she knows first hand it can be uncomfortable. With three easily found examples in the comics about Wonder Woman's ties to bondage, it raises the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Wonder Woman Hero Spider–Man and Wonder Woman are not similar to the stereotypical heroes at the time, but they still had the attributes of a true hero. In the past, Stan Lee had thought of a superhero that would be similar to teenagers. Stan Lee wanted to construct a hero that people could relate to, and in the end he created Spider–Man. Spider–Man simply had the same abilities as a spider. Then in 1941, Wonder Woman made her first appearance from the mind of William Moulton Marston. William supported women's rights since his college days, and he wanted to have equality for each gender in all human activities. In addition, people believed that comics were bad for kids, but William believed not. Wonder Woman's set of skills is that she could fly, had immense speed, strength, and smarts. Additionally, Wonder Woman also wielded a lasso that could make anyone tell the truth if caught by it, and this lasso is inspired from William's polygraph, which was able to detect lies. Three ways that Wonder Woman and Spiderman were different from other superheroes of the time is that people could relate to them, there purposes of being created, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Stan Lee proposed the idea of a hero with spider–like characteristics to Martin Goodman, Martin turned it down because many people do not enjoy spiders. "He said that Spider–Man seemed more like a comedy character than a powerful superhero. Since most people don't like spiders, Goodman thought that the name "Spider–Man" was a terrible choice," (1 Patel). At the time, Wonder Woman had powers similar to the male superheroes of the time because most female heroes were minor characters with limited powers.
