1. Making the ipad, Knives
We needed to make a fake tablet/ipad cheaply for WWRY.
What I needed to make it:
Card
Black, and white paint, paint brush
Scissors
Black tape, masking tape
Black spray paint
Glue gun, Prit stick
Print out of ipad screen
Pen
First, I drew around a real tablet (alternatively you could just estimate
this size). Then I cut through each corner and bent the edges to form a
curve.
Then I taped the edges together with the black tape to make the ipad 3D.
2. I cut another rounded rectangle for the screen.
I then marked a boarded around 2cm in all around the edge of the card.
This will be where the screen will be.
I then attached the screen to the back with masking tape. I made a
light grey paint and painted the back. I used a silvery grey rather than
black as it would stand out more on stage and it looks more technical.
3. I also cut out an Apple logo to stick onto the back, which I spray
painted black and glue gunned on. I did this so it looked more
authentic. Also, the apple will make the audience understand what it is.
I then printed out a picture of a screen and stuck it on with a glue stick.
It didn’t matter that it was black and white, or that the ipad itself was a
little rough around the edges as it isn’t used very much and the
audience won’t see the details.
4. Knives
For the knives, I was told that they wanted two small knives that looked rough and handmade. As
they wanted a ‘handmade’ look so I didn’t buy them. Also, the cheap, small fake knives were all flip
knives, which are illegal to use on stage as they are a health and safety hazard.
I looked at images of knives online and chose a design I found looked best, then drew the outline
onto a piece of card. I then marked out where I wanted the handle and cut out four pieces card the
same size, stuck two pieces together and then put them either side of the card to make it thicker.
For the blade I broke up a CD (I covered it with a cloth first so that I didn’t cut myself) and then
attached it to the handle using masking tape so that there are no sharp edges and risk of cutting the
performers.
I then painted the prop and to give decoration added pins which I had seen somebody do in a
tutorial. I watched a tutorial on how to make knives to see if they had any extra tips to make the
prop look more realistic.

able to fit into her boot without being uncomfortable (the
size is around 4in/10cm
