Examples Of Sexism In The Princess And The Frog
I chose to analyze the movie "The Princess and the Frog" since I knew how sexist Disney princess movies in the past, such as Cinderella and Snow
White and the Seven Dwarves, have been, but also the interesting twists that try to hide sexism in the more modern tales. "The Princess and The
Frog" really is a classic Disney love story. Tiana is a woman in New Orleans who dreams of one day running her own popular restaurant along the
Mississippi River. Prince Naveen travels to New Orleans with the sole purpose of marrying a rich woman to reclaim his part of his family's
fortune. His greed is his downfall when he seeks the services of Dr. Facilier, a voodoo man who turns him into a frog and turns his servant,
Lawrence, into the prince. In a chance meeting at a masquerade ball, Tiana and frog Naveen meet. Naveen promises to pay for Tiana's restaurant if
she would kiss him to turn him back into a human. Tiana relents, kisses him, and then is also turned into a frog. It is a race against time for them to
find a way to turn themselves back into humans.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This stereotype is somewhat true since Prince Naveen is turned into a frog, fulfilling the animal part. The only way that he can go back to being human
in the film is by kissing a princess. The fact that the kiss has to happen between a male and a female emphasizes the standard of heterosexual
relationships that was set as the social norm before by the men on the trolley. This is not the only thing the kiss symbolize. The kiss also symbolize
Naveen's reliance on women. Naveen tells Tiana in confidence that he had never learned how to do anything because his parents did everything for
him. Naveen is used to the nurturing of his parents and expects everyone, included Tiana, to provide everything for

Analyzing The Poem 'The Frog Prince'
Is a poem without any specific sound easy to understand? Possibly not! In most poems, a poet uses assonance or consonance to draw special
attention to specific parts of the poem. A poem with assonance or vowels tells the reader about how low or high the sound is, giving them a sense of
the emotion of the character or the poet at that specific part. On the other hand, consonance determines the friction or tone of a word or line, telling the
reader when to slow down or when to read faster. Assonance and consonance helps to createrhyme in poems; a rhyme is a repeated sound at the end of
each line that unifies the structure of the poem. In the poem, The Frog Prince by Robert Pack, assonance and consonance are repeated to create a
smooth rhyme. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pitch is defined as the "quality of the sound." He uses words and sounds with same pitch at the end of every line to form a unified structure to easily
catch the reader's consideration. For instance, the first four lines end with "surprise", "frame", "body", and "name" (lines 1–4, p735) and all of these
words have the sound of "se" (ee), "me" (ee), "y"(ee), "me"(ee) at the end. Since "e" has a high pitch, these words are very quick to pronounce and
they create a unified structure. However, line 5, "The joy she must have felt to learn", disrupts the unity of the structure, because it has an "ugh"
sound in it which is low pitch it doesn't rhyme well with the first four lines. To recapture, the reader's attention Pack ends line 6 and 8 with phases
such as "wonder" and "under." These words create a rough "er" or "rh" sound which indicates a major and drastic change in the princess' life.
Moreover, line 10, 12, and 14 end with a heavy "dah" sound. For example, it takes a lot of energy to pronounce the following words: "read", "bed",
and "said." Overall, the "dah" sound beautifully executes the dramatic shift in mood, from the frog's transformation into a prince to the princess'
mother's confrontation of the prince and princess' in the

Mood Of The Frog Prince
In The Frog Prince and the Hazel tells Laverne The frog prince is the original story and Hazel tells Laverne is a story rendered new. First, The Frog
Prince point of view is third person all knowing, and the perspective is a narrator. For example, in the Frog Prince the author wrote, "One fine
evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a wood; and when she came to a cool spring of
water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest a while. Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favourite plaything;
and she was always tossing it up into the air, and catching it again as it fell." Then in Hazel tells Laverne is in First person told by the princess. For

Hazel tells Laverne the mood was sad because she flushed a prince in a toilet."ya little green pervert an i hit sm with my mop an has ta flush the

Where Do Fairy Tales Come From?
On October 21, 2014 Marina Warner wrote an article titled "Where do Fairy Tales Come From?". In her article, she described the six
characteristics of a fairy tale. First, it is a short narrative. Fairy tales are usually a page or two long. Second, fairy tales are familiar stories. Third,
they must follow organically from the implied oral and popular tradition. That basically means that the plots and characters will be familiar no matter
what version you hear. Fourthly, it consists of some type of symbolism. Fifthly, the story has to have some type of magic in it. Rather its talking
animals or enchanted objects, it has to be included. Finally, it must express some type of hope. Even though these are characteristics of a fairy tales, they

She then proceeded to say, "what big ears you have", "what big eyes you have", "what big hands you have", and "what a big scary mouth you
have." When Red made notice about the wolf's mouth, he leaped out the bed and gobbled her up. Luckily, for Red a Hutsman was coming by when
he heard her screams. He cut the wolf open and pulled out grandmother and Red. Once Red got out and tended to half dead grandmother, she filled
the wolf's belly with stones and sewed it closed. When the wolf woke up he tried to get up, but because the stones were so heavy he fell to his death.
The Hutsman skinned the wolf for a prize and everyone lived happily ever after. As defined by https://www.merriam–webster.com/dictionary/hope,
hope is "to cherish a desire with anticipation." Characteristic six perfectly applies to the story The Frog King, or Iron Heinrich written by Brothers
Grimm. The hope expressed isn't specific as to rather it's in hopes that something good happens or if something bad happens. Sometimes the hope
of something isn't always stated, but often implied. The Frog King has several examples of implied hopes. Once there was a young Princess that
had a golden ball that she loved to play with. One day she was playing catch with her golden ball in the forest beside a well. She threw the ball up,
but it didn't come down in her hands, instead it fell in the well. The Princess cried so loud that a from appeared from the

Princess And The Frog
The Princess and the Frog. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, performances by Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, and Oprah Winfrey, Walt
Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, 2009.
This movie is the ninth movie in Disney's line of princess movies. Set in New Orleans,
Louisiana, the movie begins with a woman telling a young girl named Tiana and her friend Charlotte the story of the Frog Prince. Charlotte is in love
with the tale, while Tiana says that she will "never kiss a frog" (The Princess and the Frog). Charlotte's father arrives home with a new puppy for her
while the woman, who is Tiana's mother, and Tiana head home for the night. Back at Tiana's shack, her and her father make gumbo, and they talk about

The movie shifts to a few years in the future, and Tiana is now a waitress working to save up money for her own restaurant, since her father has
passed away. While at work, Charlotte arrives and announces that "Prince Naveen of Maldonia is coming to New Orleans" (The Princess and the
Frog). He is staying with Charlotte's family, and in hopes of her marrying the prince, she pays Tiana to make her "man–catching beignets" for the ball
she is hosting (The Princess and the Frog). Prince Naveen arrives in New Orleans in hopes of marrying Charlotte to inherit her wealth, as his parents
cut his inheritance off. Naveen and his butler run into Facilier, a voodoo doctor, and become entangled in his plan to take over New Orleans. Prince
Naveen is turned into a frog, and the butler is turned into a copy of Prince Naveen, who will marry Charlotte, steal her wealth, and give it to Facilier.

How Does Hazel Tell Laverne
Hazel Tells Laverne by Kathryn Machan is a poem that tells the story of a young maid who has a brief interaction with a frog in the ladies room. This
poem is from Hazel's perspective in which she is telling Laverne about their conversation about her becoming a princess. Hazel, a princess? Within this
context, Kathryn Machan utilizes literary techniques such as diction, allusion, and symbolism. Each literary technique is shown throughout the entirety
of the poem in order to give the reader an idea of who Hazel is and what she reflects upon herself as a maid in the nineteenth century. Punctuation was
created in the English language to create a sense of knowledgeability and clarity while reading, writing or speaking. While punctuation is not used in

This poem is an example of the ideas women of an uneducated part of the country may reflect about themselves. Although some may suggest that
women of this time could never amount to greater things than cleaning a toilet, today's accomplishments of women exceed that stereotype of
women. The references to "The Frog Princess" connect Hazel's story to the "ideal" lifestyle of a privileged woman of that time. The symbolic
examples conveyed in this poem explain who Hazel is and the conditions she lives in. With the symbol of Hazel representing the women of her
country, it creates the perception that women like her are part of a community that is unqualified for equal perception between women and men.
Ultimately, Hazel tells Laverne what she felt during her moments of talking to the frog. The symbolic evidence portrayed throughout the poem gives
the reader a clear image of why Hazel could never see herself living such an extravagant lifestyle. Hazel elucidates that she has never seen herself as a
princess. Hazel, a

The Pros And Cons Of Cinderella In Disney
Disney reigns supreme, and part of that supreme reign is an unquestionable privileging of patriarchy, and in particular: whiteness. Beginning with Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, all of Disney's princesses have been predominantly white. As Walt Disney Company sets its position as a media
powerhouse, it places itself the center of controversy with its recent movie The Princess and the Frog. The film is steeped in racial controversy since
Disney first announced their plans for the first black princess.
Disney came out with a black princess, and a controversy by critics came out along with it, and they are not pleasant. Considering Disney has such a
presence in the American mainstream culture, that standard they create will stay. The real question is whether she vanquishes stereotypes of promotes
them.
Without fail, everyone describes Cinderella as Disney's 1950 animated blonde Cinderella. Participants rarely visualize the African–American pop singer
and actor Brandy Norwood, who played the lead in the 1997 televised version with its multicultural and interracial star–studded cast. To date,
participants always see Cinderella as white. Disney set the standard. Disney scholar Kathy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, since there is no royal family of the United States, a foreign royal would have to be involved in the story. The arguments around Prince
Naveen should not have been another issue against the film. With this in mind, many believed that Walt Disney himself was without a doubt a racist
individual as he continued to create more movies with racial remarks. The Princess and the Frog seemed to be another movie to support this claim.

Similarities Between The Princess And The Frog Prince
First I would like to explain that I truly believe that there slim to no reasons that the most recent story which is the princess and the frog relates
anything to Grimm's fairy tale The Frog Prince or Iron Henry. I believe this to be true due to the fact that there is only one similarity between the two
stories and that is, that in both there is a princess that stumbles upon and frog and he turns into a prince.
With that being said I think this baseline plot was kept to create what is one of today's modern princess stories in which a beautiful young girl must
endure trials and tribulation to find love in not only an unexpected place but with a very unexpected person. In the newest version of the story we get

turned into humans, excited and surprised they both realize by getting married Tiauna was then princess. They then are married as humans and later
receive the property to the restaurant. They both then begin to work, clean and decorate the restaurant and when it's done they are shown dancing and
kissing on the roof.
Grimm's fairy tale is very very very basic, it gives a small paragraph of a young princess who drops her golden ball into a very deep well. While she
is sitting and crying a small frog comes along and tells the young princess that if she takes care of him and loves him then he will retrieve her
beloved ball. She agrees and he does so, but when he comes up with the ball she takes off running back to her castle. Later that night the princess
and her father are eating at the grand table when there is a knock on the door, the princess runs over and too her surprise it's the frog explaining that
he got her ball for her so she must take care of him, she slams the door in his face and runs back to her table so he yells out and he father hears him
and demands of the princess that she must take care of him. Mad and upset she

The Fairy Tales : The Frog Prince
There are a dozen adaptations of the Grimm brothers fairytale; The Frog Prince. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm wrote over 200 fairy tales in 1812.
Although their work was published over 200 years ago, the stories they wrote are still being told today. Thanks to Disney, these stories have been
adapted for younger audiences. Modern adaptations of Grimm's fairy tales are modernised for younger audiences by taking away the gore, swearing,
and violence. In this paper, I will be examining the differences in the original book written by the Grimm brothers, and an adaptation written by James
Orchard Halliwell–Phillipps. The Maiden and the Frog, written by Halliwell–Phillipps, was written from the years 1820–1829, although it isn't declared

After chopping the frog's head off, almost magically a handsome prince took the place of the beheaded frog. The two were married shortly after, and
lived happily ever after. The Frog King was written by the brothers Grimm (John and Willhelm Grimm) in 1812, Germany. In the original version of
the story there was a princess who loved sitting next to a well, and throwing her golden ball. One day the ball fell into the well, and the princess
cried. A frog popped out of the water and asked the princess why she was crying. "Oh', she said, 'you ugly frog, how can you help me? My golden ball

Disney Films : Common Themes In Disney Animated Films
Traditionally, Disney tales have a common theme where their princesses or princes' curses need to be broken by the spell through a kiss of love, so
the dream becomes a reality. In the first feature–length animated film from Disney, The Snow White, and Seven Dwarves. Jasmine the princess and
Aladdin the street boy both they had chemistry and realized their wishes against Jaffar and Middle–Est culture. Passing over the fabulous story of

The Princess And The Frog Film Analysis
In 2009, Disney launched their first black princess ever in the movie "The Princess and the Frog". The black princess, however, spends most of the
movie as a frog. She was a poor princess and her mother worked for white people. This enforces the stereotypes that African–Americans are majority
poor or part of the lower class. There was also a gender stereotype since the princess was still helpless alone and needed a man to help her launch her
dream of opening up a restaurant. "While some critics and audiences may argue that disney made good on eliminating the most overt representations
of sexism and racism in the princess and the frog, others may argue that the company likewise failed to counter Micheal claim that disney films and
theme parks tender as a norman rockwell painting." In this article Breaux concentrates on the representations of the historical crossing of race and
gender in Disney's The Princess and the Frog and black women in animated film in the USA. It explains more on how Disney and Pixar studio
executives and animators to use The Princess and the Frog to respond to its critics claims about the perpetuation of sexism and racism in its animated
features. It has three important sections which explains how Disney attempted to answer criticism about the absence of African Americans and mothers
in its films, the presence of physically over–sexualized and emotionally prince–dependent, and the representations of animated black women in the
history of film and Disney's rewriting or sanitizing of African American history and denial of its and our nation's racist past. In Mulan (1998), she is
struggling with the image that her family and society have established on her. She must be presentable as a bride to uphold her family honor. However,
when her aging father is called upon to military service when the huns invade, Mulan takes it upon herself to act like a man and take her father's place.
Mulan is trying to make something of herself without obtaining male companionship. Mulan doesn't adjust with traditional views of feminine behavior.
Rather, she challenges these views. Mulan cares more about justifying her duty and saving her father than romantic connections. Mulan definitely had

Black Characters Of Disney Animated Films From Dumbo ( To...
Many Americans grew up watching Disney movies. As a child, these films probably seemed innocent. However, scholars would disagree as Disney has
been under heat for having racist elements in their movies. One film in particular that has received the attention of many scholars is Dumbo. One
Scholar, Sheri Joffe wrote A Critical and Contextual Analysis of the Changes in African
–American Character Representation in Disney Animated Films
from Dumbo (1941) to The Princess and the Frog (2009), discusses how Disney portrayed blacks. The main topic of the thesis was on how in both
films, black characters and caricatures were depicted in a negative light. For the purpose of this essay, only the depiction of black characters and
caricatures will be discussed. Joffe analyzed how in two scenes Dumbo had problematic illustrations of blacks. After researching the topic, scholars
are of two minds of whether or not Disney was racist in the film Dumbo. On a very basic level, Dumbo is a film following the story of an orphaned
baby elephant. In the beginning of the movie, Dumbo is ridiculed by his troupe for his large, flappy ears. After much harassment, his mother defends
him resulting in her removal from the troupe due to excessive aggression. Dumbo, now with no one to have his back, eventually befriends a tiny mouse
named Timothy. One night the two drink water that was accidently spiked with alcohol, causing the two to have a drunken journey. The journey ends
with Dumbo in a tree where he

Comparing Iron Henry And The Frog King
"The writer may very well serve a movement of history as its mouthpiece, but he cannot of course create it." – Karl Marx. The words of Karl Marx
have shaped nations and caused immeasurable change across the globe. Perhaps it was his dedication to the plight of the working man, or maybe his
defiance of the ruling class, either way, there is no doubt that Karl Marx has influenced the lives of millions. Similarly, the works of the Brothers
Grimm, specifically "Iron Henry" and "Hansel and Gretel" (for this essay), have also influenced the lives of millions, both young and old, as
common icons of folklore. It would be easy to gloss over these tales as nothing more than a simple tales, a closer inspection of the authors may lead to
more clues. According to a short biography on the Bros. Grimm, it turns out that the brothers, "...were strongly influenced by feelings of national
pride," (Myers). This fact, coupled with the knowledge that the brothers were also in the service of several German ... Show more content on

The story of "The Frog King, or, Iron Henry" is ripe with symbols of class structure. In fact, the title alone targets two characters of differing
classes. Iron Henry is the servant that grieves and worries for his friend, the bewitched frog/prince, "...faithful Henry had suffered such care and pain
when his master was turned into a frog, that he had been obliged to wear three iron bands over his heart, to keep it from breaking with trouble and
anxiety." (Grimm). His character is symbolic of the working class, as illustrated by his kindness and humility. In contrast, the royal princess is very
rude and selfish, abusing those she believes inferior to herself. This is demonstrated after the frog returns the princess' ball, and the princess
immediately abandons him, "...for croak, croak after her as he might, she would not listen to him, but made haste home, and very soon forgot all about
the poor frog,"

Analysis Of The Movie ' Princess And The Frog '
The Disney Franchise produced their first African– American princess back in 2009 depicting the classic fairytale story of "Princess and The Frog".
During the animation, Tiana is an independent, multifaceted woman who is goal oriented causing her to be faced with problems throughout. However,
because the film contained the first African–American princess which shed light on many cultural details surely there are going to be problems
associated with various subjects throughout the movie. In the past, Disney films would focus more about true love rather than a girl achieving her
dreams of having her very own restaurant. Having the main character achieve her goals in the film while Disney still adds romance throughout her

"Therefore, some critical questions for children of color in the context of the role fairy tales may play in the identity formation of children would be:
How am I represented in the images in the tales? What do these fairy tales tell me about me and about others? If I am not in the picture at all, what
does this mean?" (Hurley, 228). Over many years, Disney princesses have developed into something that little girls admire. With this, Disney only
producing one race is quite limiting to say the least. "As a globally dominant producer of cultural constructs related to gender, race, ethnicity, class
and sexuality, Disney reigns supreme, and part of that supreme reign is an unquestionable privileging of patriarchy and whiteness" (Lester 294).
However, recent Disney films similar to Princess and the Frog have impacted this generation by breaking past racial barriers and influencing the
upcoming children. Creating characters like Tiana give young children of all races a heroine princess from a Disney film that inspires and act as a
role model in many ways. By Disney broadening their princess standards: opening up the franchise to produce lead characters of various races, have
altered the viewers perspective. This has lead to portray women of all ethnicities that children will look up and accomplish their goals.

The Frog King : Good, And Values Of Fairy Tales
Be kind. Be honest. Good works will be rewarded. Wickedness will be punished. Geared toward children, most fairy tales relate some message
exhibiting the merits of virtue and price of malevolence. Storytelling in general originated as a way to pass on traditions, preserve history, and
teach lessons. It is surprising to find that even with this innate purpose, the Grimm brothers' The Frog King lacks a positive or applicable moral.
First published in 1812 Berlin, this is a tale of a beautiful princess who turns to a frog for help when her favorite toy accidentally rolls into in a well.
The frog agrees to help her if she will consent to having him for a companion. The princess accepts his offer, but goes back on her word and promptly...

This concentration on the princess stops just short of allowing for a conclusive lesson based on the princess's thoughts and actions. Conversely, the
prince is not a definable victim or antagonist, either. The prince's actions throughout the story are somewhat contradictory, and it's impossible to say
his ultimate happiness is a result of one particular action or deed. The prince initially helps the princess, but he shows her no sympathy. Despite her
obvious fear and aversion to the frog, he orders her around and forces her to comply with his wishes, finally threatening, "Lift me up or I'll tell your
father" (49). It is possible to furnish reasons for the prince's actions – perhaps he is provoking the princess so she will set him free, perhaps he is selfish
and cruel – but there is no supporting textual evidence for these claims. There is no background information available for the prince. It is given that
the prince is forced to live as a frog due to an enchantment, but there is no mention of why he was enchanted or how the princess breaks the spell.
Without knowledge of the prince's motivations, it's impossible to discern a clear lesson stemming from the prince's actions. The prince's thoughts and
emotions are not displayed in the beginning of the story, either. All that is given is that, in the end, the

Gender Differences In The Princess And The Frog
The idea that males and females are much more dissimilar than they are similar, the gender differences model, has been a part of media for years. The
opposing view, the gender similarities hypothesis, states that in regard to psychological variables, the two genders are actually much more similar in
most areas. This gender similarities hypothesis is supported by many studies, reviewed by Hyde in her article.
Effect size, d, for gender differences is given by the mean score for females subtracted from the mean score for males divided by the average
within–sex standard deviation. Negative d values favor females, and positive d values favor males.
In the meta–analyses that Hyde studied, 78% of gender differences are small or insignificant. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A woman may need to be seen as a leader in the workplace, while still keeping the nurturing side that society expects her to have and that men are not

My research focused on gender differences in aggression in the movie The Princess and the Frog. Research has found that there are moderate gender
differences in aggression. The vast majority of studies have shown that males are slightly more aggressive than females in all types of aggression (i.e.,
physical, verbal, psychological, etc.).
For my research, the independent variable is whether the character is male or female, and the dependent variable is how much aggressive behavior is
displayed by the two genders in The Princess and the Frog. The operational definition I used to define aggressive behavior was anything done by one
character that brings any physical harm to another character.
In the movie, there were a total of 26 aggressive acts. Twenty–three of these examples were performed by male characters, thus meaning three of them
were performed by females. Looking at percentages, 88% of the aggressive actions were by the males, and 12% were actions by

Hazel Tells Laverne Essay
People encounter many stereotypes daily, especially ones concerning women. In "Hazel Tells Laverne" by Katharyn Hows Machan, the narrator, Hazel,
explains an incident that she encountered, in which a frog attempts to stereotype her by assuming all women fantasize about being a princess. The
author creates a mocking tone towards the frog through the use of diction, language, and syntax, therefore showing that the narrator doesn't want to be
a princess.
Machan uses diction to create cacography, the deliberate misspelling of words to illustrate the fact that Hazel is not highly educated. "Up pops this
frog/ musta come from the sewer" (Machan 5–6), The tone is disgusted, she doesn't say 'a frog', she says 'this frog', she also describes how it ... Show

The majority of the sentences are telegraphic, conveying that she doesn't care too much about what she is talking about. The few sentences that
are a little longer, but still short, express her dislike for the frog and being a princess. "but sohelpmegod he starts talkin" (10), would be the longest
sentence if 'sohelpmegod' was separated, but it shows how surprised and disgusted Hazel is. She cares more about how she doesn't like the frog
and doesn't want to be a princess. Machan used an inverted sentence, "up pops this frog"(5), to show that Hazel doesn't understand how the frog
got there. She is mystified by the frog. On the next line though, she says, "musta come from the sewer"(6). When she realizes this, she is repulsed
by it. After that, she tries to flush it, and the frog offers to make her a princess, and at first she might of considered it when she says "me a

emotion. "me a princess"(24), because the line was italicized, there was a lot of emotion. Hazel is mocking the frog for even considering that she
wants to be a princess.
Through the use of diction, language, and syntax, Machan reveals that Hazel, the narrator, does not wish to be a princess, and constructs a mocking
tone towards the frog. The frog was stereotyping Hazel and

Feminism In Disney's 'The Princess And The Frog'
Once upon a time, the princess doesn't get saved, the villain isn't an older woman and prince charming just wants to be left alone. It's not usual to
see a connection between feminism and fairy tales, but there's a reason they both start with 'F'. I grew up in a time where my baby pink bedroom
walls were filled with VHS tapes of classic fairytale stories like Beauty and The Beast, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. Yet even though I was
born in the late 1990's it wasn't until December 11th, 2009 that I was able to see a representation of myself and my skin tone. In the release of The
Princess and the Frog, Disney revealed their very first African–American princess allowing me to become even more aware of the inequality facing me,
my race and my gender through media at the young age of twelve. From damsels in distress, to oversexualized drawings, to displayed over–masculinity
in princes; there's no part of fairytales that does not have a lasting effect on our youth, society and morality. In a world filled with inequality, the
experiences I have had and the fairytale culture I have grown up watching and reading is why I chose to be an intersectional feminist. As an
intersectional feminist, I believe in advocating and fighting for equality of the sexes while taking into account "how women's overlapping identities –
including race, class, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation – impact the way they experience oppression and discrimination" (Crenshaw). And with

Comparing Disney And Disney's The Frog Prince And The Frog...
The Frog Prince vs. "The Princess and The Frog" Disney's "The Princess and The Frog" is based on the original story The Frog Prince written by the
Grimm brothers in 1812. There have been many books and movies inspired by the original The Frog Prince, each being different in their own way.
The name is a common difference between the original and newer versions of the story, usually modern versions are named "The Princess and The Frog
" like Disney's adaptation. Even though Disney's "The Princess and The Frog" and the original The Frog Prince are the same story, they have
notable differences and very few similarities; the setting, her status, the story line, and the moral. The Frog Prince begins telling how the princess
very often spent her spare time at a well near her castle where she would play catch with her golden ball. One day while she was playing catch, she
accidentally threw her golden ball into the well. As she cried about her golden ball a frog offered to help her as long as she made a promise, "but if you
would love me, and have me for your companion and play–fellow, and let me sit by you at table, and eat from your plate, and drink from your cup, and
sleep in your little bed– if you would promise all this, then would I dive below the water and fetch you your golden ball again." (Grimm) Even the
princess agreed, she left after the frog retrieved her golden ball for her. The day after meeting the frog, she sat, eating at her dinner table only to be

Jacob And Wilhelm Grimm: A Literary Analysis
The frog prince by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm utilizes an animal to explore several ideologies of the 19th century. The frog prince is depicted to be
grotesque and slimy to highlight the importance of social hierarchy while identifying the potential detrimental flaws of royalty/nobility marginalizing
them from society.
For example, with the fairy tale, the frog prince approaches the young princess and asks her if she would like her golden ball and prized possession
returned to her, but the frog is sneaky and strategic in his request for her hand in marriage. Furthermore, although the text concludes with a beautiful
prince and princess, who live 'happily ever after', this conclusion in and during the 19th century would not have been appropriate. Thus, the frog is an ...

In addition, the use of animals to transcend society has been used to create a separation between reality and the fantastical distancing the fairy tale from
any social commentary about the problems of society while embedding certain real (or present) ideologies within the text. Also, the term grotesque
could be applied to this fairy tale to highlight the imbalance between the princesses' beauty and status, but the frogs ability to transcend the natural
hierarchy and sit with the princess at the table, requesting his place to be moved even closer to hers. This use of the frog to bridge the gap between
royalty and the working class may have been an intentional maneuver to indirectly comment on the major division between classes and the negative
and condescending perceptions royalty encompassed. With that being said he further transcends society by imposing himself to sleep with the princess,
which highlights another major theme of this tale, the importance and value beauty held in society. For example, in the text there is a reference to the
slimy frog sleeping with the young, beautiful princess, but a crucial turning point in the text is when the frog morphs into a

Analysis Of Disney 's ' The Princess And The Frog ' Essay
Destructive Disney
"To the youngsters of today, I say believe in the future; the world is getting better"– Walt Disney. Families all around the world view Disney as a fun
for all the family corporation. Disney's aim is to provide viewer's with unlimited and endless family–friendly entertainment. However, I believe that
Disney is not innocent when it comes to exploiting the minds of young innocent children, with their subliminal messages, racism, drug abuse and
sexism, which is psychologically damaging vulnerable minds.
One of Disney's most controversial films 'The Princess and the Frog' was released, with its first ever black princess: but all excitement and happiness
was brought to an end when they realised that Disney had not taken the opportunity of having a fairy tale ending with a black prince and princess.
The Princess and the Frog is set in 1920's New Orleans which was a time of racial segregation which plays a very important part in this film. In
today's generation the topic of equal rights is a heavily focused topic. However, this wasn't the films first title, originally it was brought to the public's
attention as 'The Frog Princess'. When this first caught the eyes of viewers they were shocked and astonished, as they believed that this was
insinuating that black woman were ugly. This was not the only change to the film, Princess Tiana was originally called Maddy who was a

Young children often hear many fairy tales growing up, one of the most famous is the tale of a princess kissing a frog to magically transform the
frog into a prince so that they could live happily ever after. In 2009, Walt Disney and Pixar Films released The Princess and the Frog which
portrays different aspects of Louisiana's history during the 1920s. The film tells the story for a young ambitious chef, Tiana, and her struggles to
follow her dreams due to her race, her sex, and the time period. At the beginning of the movie, Tiana's mother, Eudora, tells her and her best friend
Charlotte a story while working on a gown for Charlotte. "Sometimes [the] mothers, being obligated to work and having no one at home with
whom to leave their children," was the reason they brought their children to work with them (Paradise,64). The story that the two young girls are
being told is about a princess kissing a frog to become a prince, to marry, and live happily ever after. Charlotte says that she would kiss one hundred
frogs if she could be a princess and live happy and rich, yet Tiana takes no interest to what her mother says. Tiana says that she will never kiss a
frog, for she believes she is capable of finding love without such a silly antic. Charlotte is already wealthy yet she wishes upon stars every chance that
she gets, but Tiana does not like to take chances. She would rather work toward her dreams or anything that she would wish for because her father

Analysis Of ' The Princess And The Frog '
Disney films over their course of existence have hidden double meanings in many of the films they produce. Rather if you are a child or a full
pledged adult, people from all different ages can receive a bit of advice when it comes to what Disney films try to convey in their motion pictures.
Disney is also to be known for some of their unforgettable whimsical characters and memorable songs in every film. The film released in 2009 "The
Princess and The Frog" is no different. Especially when it comes to Mama's Odie's musical number half way through the film. Mama's Odie's song, "Dig
a Little Deeper" is full of metaphors, themes and imagery one can deeply analyze.
At the same time we can apply the song, "Dig a Little Deeper," to various characters we have come to learn and explore through the several novels we
have covered over the course of the semester. We can also apply it to the distinct issues pertaining to women in the South.
The title of the song itself gives the viewer the overall significant and direct theme of the piece right away. It urges a person to go beyond the
surface of a circumstance almost saying as if to go into the root or origin of the matter. To find who a person really is at the core of their being. At the
start of the song Mama Odie comes off as a non–judgmental person. "Don 't matter what you look like. Don 't matter what you wear. How many rings
you got on your finger. We don 't care." Being in front of her and don referring to her lack of sight,

Comparing Disney's The Princess And The Frog
Produced in 2009, Disney's The Princess and The Frog tells the story of a young woman trying to make it in 1920s, New Orleans. Tiana's intelligence,
ambition, and brutally honest state of being kept her focused on her goal of owning a gourmet restaurant, and guided her towards her true love. This
movie shows how these three main characteristics impacted her journey in finding her happily ever after.
Tiana's intelligence shines through with every obstacle thrown her way. Growing up in a working–class neighborhood, she didn't receive any handouts
unlike her best friend Charlotte LaBouff, who came from a very wealthy family. Tiana knew that in order to accomplish her dreams it was going to
take every ounce of energy that she had to keep pushing herself towards to the top. So she worked two full time jobs at different cafes in downtown
New Orleans, Louisiana. A scene towards the beginning of thefilm shows Tiana coming home from work one morning and being truly exhausted while

The Princess And The Frog Analysis
1.Princess and the frog film took place in the 1920's in a capitalist society where some groups dominant minorities. Disney's message is one of
empathy: how different groups of people learn from each other by 'walking in the other person's shoes'.This was seen very well when the film was

and at the end of the film when Tiana became a princess. So,diversity in culture was portrayed throughout the film.
On the other hand, Tiana ends up with a racial prince Naveen rather than a black prince. Prince Naveen, who many are saying looks white. Disney

Feminist Story Of Disney's The Princess And The Frog
The story of Tiana in the movie The Princess and the Frog is one of Disney's more progressive princess movies in that it moved away from the typical,
cookie cutter princess story in which the woman needs saving from the handsome and charming prince. The movie is the story of Tiana, a young,
African–American woman of low socioeconomic status, who lives in New Orleans. The movie centers around Tiana's dream of owning her own
restaurant named Tiana's Palace and how she gets to her happily ever after of owning her restaurant. Though progressive the movie still contains similar
traits to other Disney princess movies. The Princess and the Frog exhibits traits of Feminist theories throughout Tiana's journey in building her
restaurant while the movie still undermines the oppression of women. Moreover, in her journey aspects of Karl Marxist's commodity theory arises
when Tiana interacts with other characters in the movie. Marx's commodity theory is a two–category theory; objects become commodities when they
have more use than their standard value. When commodities are traded they can either have exchange or sign exchange value. Exchange value occurs
when monetary value is placed on an object and is traded and sign exchange value is when a commodity is exchanged social status is obtained (Tyson

commodities in hopes to gain something in

Animal Imagery In Fairy Tales
Over time, historians have interpreted the use of animal imagery in western folk and fairy tales as a means for providing entertainment and moral
lessons to western society. However, many historians have different ideas about how animal imagery and stereotypes actually affect a society besides
keeping away from wolves and bears and such. Dr. Jack Zipes, a professor of German and comparative literature, promotes in his paper, "What Makes a
Repulsive Frog So Appealing: Memetics and Fairy Tales," that the story of "The Frog Prince" is actually a story about the strategies of mating and how
the frog symbolizes its appearance of an unsuitable mate to a suitable one. In a completely different turn on fictional fairy tales influencing society, Dr.
Anna Idström and Dr. Elisabeth Piirainen, experts on endangered metaphors, instead argue that animal imagery in metaphors, idioms and tales of the
Inari Saami people are actually based on real animal behavior in their work, "The wolf – an evil and ever–hungry beast or a nasty thief? Conventional
Inari Saami metaphors and widespread idioms in contrast." Finally, in addition to how specific animal stereotypes and imagery affect elements of
western society, Dr. Lewis Seifert, a professor of French literature, tackles the subject of animal–human hybrids in fairy tales and how they are able to
separate their "animal half" from their "human half" in "Animal–Human Hybridity in d'Aulnoy's "Babiole" and "Prince Wild Boar'." In "What Makes a

the Disney Corporation has also progressed as well. They went from being completely stereotypical and racist against African Americans in Dumbo to
having an African American princess in The Princess and the Frog. Many try to find arguments that show Disney is no better today than it was in

The Frog King Symbolism
The Frog King has a lot of symbolism and lessons? Written within it. One of the big things I believe this story was written for was to show the
young girls reading it that arranged marriage wasn't that bad. At first the girl is detested by the frog, but is still forced to honor her promise by her
father. She still despises the frog until she either kisses him or is thrown against the wall, depending on the version, and changes into a handsome
prince. This just goes to show forced marriages can still turn out good and it isn't as bad as it first seems. I also believe the gold ball could further
symbolize arranged marriage. Gold is often a color that is associated with wealth and the girl looses "her favorite toy" which is the golden ball. I
believe in some situations this could show how her family lost their wealth and is marrying the daughter off to a "frog king" to get it back. Similar
to how the frog retrieves her golden ball, he returns the wealth to her/ her family. The gold ball could also symbolize a couple other things. Gold is
used to make jewelry and other valuable things, but nots in it raw form. The young immature princess hasn't been shaped into a person yet, similar to
the unshaped gold ball. She is without her own morals or ideas, she promises to the frog she will let him sleep with her and is more than willing to
break this promise if not for the stern words of her parents to honor her word. Many fairy tales involve this theme of a young/beautiful

Gender Socialization : The Princess And The Frog
Gender socialization takes place in our everyday lives whether we subconsciously know it or not. Gender socialization is the socially learned
expectations and behaviors associated with members of each gender. For example, If I were to say it takes my friend at least 45 minutes to do their
hair before school everyday, you would assume I am speaking about a friend who is a female as opposed to a friend who is male. This is because of
the idea of gender socialization.
As I stated earlier, gender socialization is apart of our everyday lives and we categorize many things by gender. Even as children it is very clear at a
young age that kids know what the idea of a man is supposed to be and the idea of what a woman is supposed to be. In the children's movie, The
Princess and the Frog, released in 2009, there are many examples of gender socialization among the characters, specifically Tiana, Eli "Big Daddy" La
Bouff, and Dr. Facilier. Tiana is a poor, struggling youngAfrican American woman in the city of New Orleans. Her father passed away when she was
a child, which resulted in her only growing up with a mother. She is a woman who is kind to everyone and works multiple jobs everyday to reach
her dream of saving enough money to open up her own restaurant. She is the stereotype of the average young black female who is struggling
everyday to earn money and takes on jobs that are more geared towards woman, like being a waitress. Because Tiana is not rich or white or even a

The Princess And The Frog Essay
Fairy tales are timeless entities that will always be relevant in people's lives. Fairy tales and stories offer entertainment, advice, and moral examples.
The creation of fairy tales is important in the development of social norms. Children everywhere would read fairy tales and learn from them. As a
result, these fairy tales are translated into multiple languages and allows people with different backgrounds to understand and relate to the story. People
take these stories and adapt them to life around them. Within these adaptations of the same story, it is normal to observe slight differences that
contribute as evidence in identifying the culture or societies in which these stories come from. Whether it is the slang of the dialogue or the change of
location, modern producers and writers are known to take these classic stories and adding a significant twist to adjust to their cultural agenda. The
movie, The Princess and the Frog, is a modern example of writers and directors creating a modern twist to the popular story of the Brother Grimm's

they come because, even though they both have similar plot ideas, the differences of the location and the differences of the overall specific plotlines

Disney Princess Role Model Essay
For most parents, it is important for their daughters to grow up with strong female influences around them. The role models would impart on the young
girls the necessary standards to compare themselves to learn their intrinsic worth and fight the opinion that women are inferior to men. Many times
they look to the media for such influences. Disney princesses have for decades been the representation little girls see; however, not all of them are

However, when a few steadfast women publicly demanded equality for the sexes, the feminist movement began. (Archer 2). The women became
known as suffragists, and the believed women could have important roles outside the home (Giele 117). They pressured for women's entrance into the
public sphere and for equal opportunities (Giele xi). However, their efforts were belittled by men who feared for their status. The men discredited the
women's femininity by calling them mannish (Giele 129) but still exploited their bodies in the media (Archer 15). In order to take control over
women's representation, feminists started wearing "bloomers" instead of the restricting and confining skirts (Jules 7). By 1989, women started getting
even more positive images in media with TV show sitcom heroines. Roseanne, an overweight, funny, workingmother, captured her audience by
yelling, "I am a women. Hear me roar!" (Archer 18). Society has advanced considerably since then, but woman and girls still search for positive
influential role models in the media to disrupt the notion that men are superior to women.
Tiana, from The Princess and the Frog, displays admirable personal qualities that are uniquely present in third wave Disney princesses. She exudes

Examples Of Sexism In The Princess And The Frog

  • 1. Examples Of Sexism In The Princess And The Frog I chose to analyze the movie "The Princess and the Frog" since I knew how sexist Disney princess movies in the past, such as Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, have been, but also the interesting twists that try to hide sexism in the more modern tales. "The Princess and The Frog" really is a classic Disney love story. Tiana is a woman in New Orleans who dreams of one day running her own popular restaurant along the Mississippi River. Prince Naveen travels to New Orleans with the sole purpose of marrying a rich woman to reclaim his part of his family's fortune. His greed is his downfall when he seeks the services of Dr. Facilier, a voodoo man who turns him into a frog and turns his servant, Lawrence, into the prince. In a chance meeting at a masquerade ball, Tiana and frog Naveen meet. Naveen promises to pay for Tiana's restaurant if she would kiss him to turn him back into a human. Tiana relents, kisses him, and then is also turned into a frog. It is a race against time for them to find a way to turn themselves back into humans.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This stereotype is somewhat true since Prince Naveen is turned into a frog, fulfilling the animal part. The only way that he can go back to being human in the film is by kissing a princess. The fact that the kiss has to happen between a male and a female emphasizes the standard of heterosexual relationships that was set as the social norm before by the men on the trolley. This is not the only thing the kiss symbolize. The kiss also symbolize Naveen's reliance on women. Naveen tells Tiana in confidence that he had never learned how to do anything because his parents did everything for him. Naveen is used to the nurturing of his parents and expects everyone, included Tiana, to provide everything for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Analyzing The Poem 'The Frog Prince' Is a poem without any specific sound easy to understand? Possibly not! In most poems, a poet uses assonance or consonance to draw special attention to specific parts of the poem. A poem with assonance or vowels tells the reader about how low or high the sound is, giving them a sense of the emotion of the character or the poet at that specific part. On the other hand, consonance determines the friction or tone of a word or line, telling the reader when to slow down or when to read faster. Assonance and consonance helps to createrhyme in poems; a rhyme is a repeated sound at the end of each line that unifies the structure of the poem. In the poem, The Frog Prince by Robert Pack, assonance and consonance are repeated to create a smooth rhyme. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pitch is defined as the "quality of the sound." He uses words and sounds with same pitch at the end of every line to form a unified structure to easily catch the reader's consideration. For instance, the first four lines end with "surprise", "frame", "body", and "name" (lines 1–4, p735) and all of these words have the sound of "se" (ee), "me" (ee), "y"(ee), "me"(ee) at the end. Since "e" has a high pitch, these words are very quick to pronounce and they create a unified structure. However, line 5, "The joy she must have felt to learn", disrupts the unity of the structure, because it has an "ugh" sound in it which is low pitch it doesn't rhyme well with the first four lines. To recapture, the reader's attention Pack ends line 6 and 8 with phases such as "wonder" and "under." These words create a rough "er" or "rh" sound which indicates a major and drastic change in the princess' life. Moreover, line 10, 12, and 14 end with a heavy "dah" sound. For example, it takes a lot of energy to pronounce the following words: "read", "bed", and "said." Overall, the "dah" sound beautifully executes the dramatic shift in mood, from the frog's transformation into a prince to the princess' mother's confrontation of the prince and princess' in the ... • 3. Mood Of The Frog Prince In The Frog Prince and the Hazel tells Laverne The frog prince is the original story and Hazel tells Laverne is a story rendered new. First, The Frog Prince point of view is third person all knowing, and the perspective is a narrator. For example, in the Frog Prince the author wrote, "One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a wood; and when she came to a cool spring of water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest a while. Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favourite plaything; and she was always tossing it up into the air, and catching it again as it fell." Then in Hazel tells Laverne is in First person told by the princess. For example,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First the mood in the Frog Prince was happy. Hazel tells Laverne the mood was sad because she flushed a prince in a toilet."ya little green pervert an i hit sm with my mop an has ta flush the toilet down three times me a princess" Then, the themes were different you the Frog Prince theme was you will never know what you're prince looks like. Hazel tells Laverne theme was dig a little deeper. Also, in the Frog Prince the tone is quiet and happy for example, " The young princess, you may be sure, was not long in saying 'Yes' to all this; and as they spoke a brightly coloured coach drove up, with eight beautiful horses, decked with plumes of feathers and a golden harness;..." Then the tone in Hazel tells Laverne is angry and loud for example, ."ya little green pervert an i hit sm with my mop an has ta flush the toilet down three times me a princess" The plots in these story are very different. • 4. Where Do Fairy Tales Come From? On October 21, 2014 Marina Warner wrote an article titled "Where do Fairy Tales Come From?". In her article, she described the six characteristics of a fairy tale. First, it is a short narrative. Fairy tales are usually a page or two long. Second, fairy tales are familiar stories. Third, they must follow organically from the implied oral and popular tradition. That basically means that the plots and characters will be familiar no matter what version you hear. Fourthly, it consists of some type of symbolism. Fifthly, the story has to have some type of magic in it. Rather its talking animals or enchanted objects, it has to be included. Finally, it must express some type of hope. Even though these are characteristics of a fairy tales, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She then proceeded to say, "what big ears you have", "what big eyes you have", "what big hands you have", and "what a big scary mouth you have." When Red made notice about the wolf's mouth, he leaped out the bed and gobbled her up. Luckily, for Red a Hutsman was coming by when he heard her screams. He cut the wolf open and pulled out grandmother and Red. Once Red got out and tended to half dead grandmother, she filled the wolf's belly with stones and sewed it closed. When the wolf woke up he tried to get up, but because the stones were so heavy he fell to his death. The Hutsman skinned the wolf for a prize and everyone lived happily ever after. As defined by https://www.merriam–webster.com/dictionary/hope, hope is "to cherish a desire with anticipation." Characteristic six perfectly applies to the story The Frog King, or Iron Heinrich written by Brothers Grimm. The hope expressed isn't specific as to rather it's in hopes that something good happens or if something bad happens. Sometimes the hope of something isn't always stated, but often implied. The Frog King has several examples of implied hopes. Once there was a young Princess that had a golden ball that she loved to play with. One day she was playing catch with her golden ball in the forest beside a well. She threw the ball up, but it didn't come down in her hands, instead it fell in the well. • 6. How Does Hazel Tell Laverne Hazel Tells Laverne by Kathryn Machan is a poem that tells the story of a young maid who has a brief interaction with a frog in the ladies room. This poem is from Hazel's perspective in which she is telling Laverne about their conversation about her becoming a princess. Hazel, a princess? Within this context, Kathryn Machan utilizes literary techniques such as diction, allusion, and symbolism. Each literary technique is shown throughout the entirety of the poem in order to give the reader an idea of who Hazel is and what she reflects upon herself as a maid in the nineteenth century. Punctuation was created in the English language to create a sense of knowledgeability and clarity while reading, writing or speaking. While punctuation is not used in this piece... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This poem is an example of the ideas women of an uneducated part of the country may reflect about themselves. Although some may suggest that women of this time could never amount to greater things than cleaning a toilet, today's accomplishments of women exceed that stereotype of women. The references to "The Frog Princess" connect Hazel's story to the "ideal" lifestyle of a privileged woman of that time. The symbolic examples conveyed in this poem explain who Hazel is and the conditions she lives in. With the symbol of Hazel representing the women of her country, it creates the perception that women like her are part of a community that is unqualified for equal perception between women and men. Ultimately, Hazel tells Laverne what she felt during her moments of talking to the frog. The symbolic evidence portrayed throughout the poem gives the reader a clear image of why Hazel could never see herself living such an extravagant lifestyle. Hazel elucidates that she has never seen herself as a princess. Hazel, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Pros And Cons Of Cinderella In Disney Disney reigns supreme, and part of that supreme reign is an unquestionable privileging of patriarchy, and in particular: whiteness. Beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, all of Disney's princesses have been predominantly white. As Walt Disney Company sets its position as a media powerhouse, it places itself the center of controversy with its recent movie The Princess and the Frog. The film is steeped in racial controversy since Disney first announced their plans for the first black princess. Disney came out with a black princess, and a controversy by critics came out along with it, and they are not pleasant. Considering Disney has such a presence in the American mainstream culture, that standard they create will stay. The real question is whether she vanquishes stereotypes of promotes them. Without fail, everyone describes Cinderella as Disney's 1950 animated blonde Cinderella. Participants rarely visualize the African–American pop singer and actor Brandy Norwood, who played the lead in the 1997 televised version with its multicultural and interracial star–studded cast. To date, participants always see Cinderella as white. Disney set the standard. Disney scholar Kathy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Similarities Between The Princess And The Frog Prince First I would like to explain that I truly believe that there slim to no reasons that the most recent story which is the princess and the frog relates anything to Grimm's fairy tale The Frog Prince or Iron Henry. I believe this to be true due to the fact that there is only one similarity between the two stories and that is, that in both there is a princess that stumbles upon and frog and he turns into a prince. With that being said I think this baseline plot was kept to create what is one of today's modern princess stories in which a beautiful young girl must endure trials and tribulation to find love in not only an unexpected place but with a very unexpected person. In the newest version of the story we get our main character who is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Escaping alligators, hunters, trap boxes, shadows, the talisman, and Dr. Facilier. She agrees and he does so, but when he comes up with the ball she takes off running back to her castle. Later that night the princess and her father are eating at the grand table when there is a knock on the door, the princess runs over and too her surprise it's the frog explaining that he got her ball for her so she must take care of him, she slams the door in his face and runs back to her table so he yells out and he father hears him and demands of the princess that she must take care of him. Although their work was published over 200 years ago, the stories they wrote are still being told today. Thanks to Disney, these stories have been adapted for younger audiences. Modern adaptations of Grimm's fairy tales are modernised for younger audiences by taking away the gore, swearing, and violence. In this paper, I will be examining the differences in the original book written by the Grimm brothers, and an adaptation written by James Orchard Halliwell–Phillipps. • 12. The Princess And The Frog Film Analysis In 2009, Disney launched their first black princess ever in the movie "The Princess and the Frog". The black princess, however, spends most of the movie as a frog. She was a poor princess and her mother worked for white people. This enforces the stereotypes that African–Americans are majority poor or part of the lower class. There was also a gender stereotype since the princess was still helpless alone and needed a man to help her launch her dream of opening up a restaurant. "While some critics and audiences may argue that disney made good on eliminating the most overt representations of sexism and racism in the princess and the frog, others may argue that the company likewise failed to counter Micheal claim that disney films and theme parks tender as a norman rockwell painting." In this article Breaux concentrates on the representations of the historical crossing of race and gender in Disney's The Princess and the Frog and black women in animated film in the USA. It explains more on how Disney and Pixar studio executives and animators to use The Princess and the Frog to respond to its critics claims about the perpetuation of sexism and racism in its animated features. It has three important sections which explains how Disney attempted to answer criticism about the absence of African Americans and mothers in its films, the presence of physically over–sexualized and emotionally prince–dependent, and the representations of animated black women in the history of film and Disney's rewriting or sanitizing of African American history and denial of its and our nation's racist past. In Mulan (1998), she is struggling with the image that her family and society have established on her. She must be presentable as a bride to uphold her family honor. However, when her aging father is called upon to military service when the huns invade, Mulan takes it upon herself to act like a man and take her father's place. However, scholars would disagree as Disney has been under heat for having racist elements in their movies. One film in particular that has received the attention of many scholars is Dumbo. One Scholar, Sheri Joffe wrote A Critical and Contextual Analysis of the Changes in African –American Character Representation in Disney Animated Films from Dumbo (1941) to The Princess and the Frog (2009), discusses how Disney portrayed blacks. The main topic of the thesis was on how in both films, black characters and caricatures were depicted in a negative light. For the purpose of this essay, only the depiction of black characters and caricatures will be discussed. Joffe analyzed how in two scenes Dumbo had problematic illustrations of blacks. After researching the topic, scholars are of two minds of whether or not Disney was racist in the film Dumbo. On a very basic level, Dumbo is a film following the story of an orphaned baby elephant. In the beginning of the movie, Dumbo is ridiculed by his troupe for his large, flappy ears. After much harassment, his mother defends him resulting in her removal from the troupe due to excessive aggression. The words of Karl Marx have shaped nations and caused immeasurable change across the globe. Perhaps it was his dedication to the plight of the working man, or maybe his defiance of the ruling class, either way, there is no doubt that Karl Marx has influenced the lives of millions. Similarly, the works of the Brothers Grimm, specifically "Iron Henry" and "Hansel and Gretel" (for this essay), have also influenced the lives of millions, both young and old, as common icons of folklore. It would be easy to gloss over these tales as nothing more than a simple tales, a closer inspection of the authors may lead to more clues. According to a short biography on the Bros. (Grimm). His character is symbolic of the working class, as illustrated by his kindness and humility. In contrast, the royal princess is very rude and selfish, abusing those she believes inferior to herself. "Therefore, some critical questions for children of color in the context of the role fairy tales may play in the identity formation of children would be: How am I represented in the images in the tales? What do these fairy tales tell me about me and about others? If I am not in the picture at all, what does this mean?" (Hurley, 228). Over many years, Disney princesses have developed into something that little girls admire. With this, Disney only producing one race is quite limiting to say the least. "As a globally dominant producer of cultural constructs related to gender, race, ethnicity, class and sexuality, Disney reigns supreme, and part of that supreme reign is an unquestionable privileging of patriarchy and whiteness" (Lester 294). However, recent Disney films similar to Princess and the Frog have impacted this generation by breaking past racial barriers and influencing the upcoming children. Geared toward children, most fairy tales relate some message exhibiting the merits of virtue and price of malevolence. Storytelling in general originated as a way to pass on traditions, preserve history, and teach lessons. It is surprising to find that even with this innate purpose, the Grimm brothers' The Frog King lacks a positive or applicable moral. First published in 1812 Berlin, this is a tale of a beautiful princess who turns to a frog for help when her favorite toy accidentally rolls into in a well. Conversely, the prince is not a definable victim or antagonist, either. The prince's actions throughout the story are somewhat contradictory, and it's impossible to say his ultimate happiness is a result of one particular action or deed. The prince initially helps the princess, but he shows her no sympathy. Despite her obvious fear and aversion to the frog, he orders her around and forces her to comply with his wishes, finally threatening, "Lift me up or I'll tell your father" (49). It is possible to furnish reasons for the prince's actions – perhaps he is provoking the princess so she will set him free, perhaps he is selfish and cruel – but there is no supporting textual evidence for these claims. There is no background information available for the prince. It is given that the prince is forced to live as a frog due to an enchantment, but there is no mention of why he was enchanted or how the princess breaks the spell. This gender similarities hypothesis is supported by many studies, reviewed by Hyde in her article. Effect size, d, for gender differences is given by the mean score for females subtracted from the mean score for males divided by the average within–sex standard deviation. For my research, the independent variable is whether the character is male or female, and the dependent variable is how much aggressive behavior is displayed by the two genders in The Princess and the Frog. The operational definition I used to define aggressive behavior was anything done by one character that brings any physical harm to another character. The paper; A Critical and Contextual Analysis of the Changes in African –American Character Representation in Disney Animated Films (2014), writes that even though the film takes a big step forward in terms of ethnic representations, it makes the mistake of "rewriting history". The fact that the film; based in 1920s New Orleans, makes no reference to how African–Americans were treated or seen by the public gives the idea that Disney just wants to pretend racism never existed (2014). This could be a result of the writers just wanting to create a magical story that kids would enjoy, instead of creating race issues that have no business in a children's story. Then again, the colour of the main character's and prince's skin becomes pointless when they are both turned into frogs, essentially removing the race element entirely. I grew up in a time where my baby pink bedroom walls were filled with VHS tapes of classic fairytale stories like Beauty and The Beast, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. Yet even though I was born in the late 1990's it wasn't until December 11th, 2009 that I was able to see a representation of myself and my skin tone. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras comes once a year, and after it's over, there are no more Mardi Gras parades. I honestly hate Mardi Gras with a passion. I'm not really a fan of crowds, so I would like to do something else with my time, but I can't because every street, or interstates, or other transcontinental highways are blocked off because of Mardi Gras. So no one will never catch me with the Mardi Gras color combination on. There is one bayou in New Orleans, which is the Bayou St. John. There are no Alligators in this bayou. This bayou that I speak of is not a swampy bayou, it is a Bayou typically used for Canoeing. In New Orleans, not everyone plays a musical instrument, or speak French, or practice Voodoo. I understand all people know is what the media portrays on New Orleans, but it much better than that. I challenge everyone to come visit New Orleans and experience it for what it really ... • 30. Comparing Disney's The Princess And The Frog Produced in 2009, Disney's The Princess and The Frog tells the story of a young woman trying to make it in 1920s, New Orleans. Tiana's intelligence, ambition, and brutally honest state of being kept her focused on her goal of owning a gourmet restaurant, and guided her towards her true love. This movie shows how these three main characteristics impacted her journey in finding her happily ever after. Tiana's intelligence shines through with every obstacle thrown her way. Growing up in a working–class neighborhood, she didn't receive any handouts unlike her best friend Charlotte LaBouff, who came from a very wealthy family. Tiana knew that in order to accomplish her dreams it was going to take every ounce of energy that she had to keep pushing herself towards to the top. So she worked two full time jobs at different cafes in downtown New Orleans, Louisiana. A scene towards the beginning of thefilm shows Tiana coming home from work one morning and being truly exhausted while counting the small number of tips she had made the night before. ... Disney's message is one of empathy: how different groups of people learn from each other by 'walking in the other person's shoes'.This was seen very well when the film was introduced by a scene that shows the effort and the insistence Tiana has from the beginning till the end of the film.On the other hand,Charlotte was portrayed as a foolish girl with no traits that a female can comply...The contradictions in characters between Tiana's and Charlotte appeal the good traits of black people who were honorable, decent, loving and hard–working...Also,we see a diversity in relationship portrayed through Tiana and Charlotte and at the end of the film when Tiana became a princess. So,diversity in culture was portrayed throughout the film. On the other hand, Tiana ends up with a racial prince Naveen rather than a black prince. Prince Naveen, who many are saying looks white. Disney says that the prince is not white. So, why Disney did not use this opportunity to end up with a black couple? Why can't a black man be seen as a hero? • 32. Feminist Story Of Disney's The Princess And The Frog The story of Tiana in the movie The Princess and the Frog is one of Disney's more progressive princess movies in that it moved away from the typical, cookie cutter princess story in which the woman needs saving from the handsome and charming prince. The movie is the story of Tiana, a young, African–American woman of low socioeconomic status, who lives in New Orleans. The movie centers around Tiana's dream of owning her own restaurant named Tiana's Palace and how she gets to her happily ever after of owning her restaurant. Though progressive the movie still contains similar traits to other Disney princess movies. The Princess and the Frog exhibits traits of Feminist theories throughout Tiana's journey in building her restaurant while the movie still undermines the oppression of women. Moreover, in her journey aspects of Karl Marxist's commodity theory arises when Tiana interacts with other characters in the movie. Marx's commodity theory is a two–category theory; objects become commodities when they have more use than their standard value. When commodities are traded they can either have exchange or sign exchange value. Exchange value occurs when monetary value is placed on an object and is traded and sign exchange value is when a commodity is exchanged social status is obtained (Tyson 62). As Tiana goes along her adventure to achieve her goal of buying a building to open her restaurant she, as well as other characters use their commodities in hopes to gain something in ... • 33. Animal Imagery In Fairy Tales Over time, historians have interpreted the use of animal imagery in western folk and fairy tales as a means for providing entertainment and moral lessons to western society. However, many historians have different ideas about how animal imagery and stereotypes actually affect a society besides keeping away from wolves and bears and such. Dr. Jack Zipes, a professor of German and comparative literature, promotes in his paper, "What Makes a Repulsive Frog So Appealing: Memetics and Fairy Tales," that the story of "The Frog Prince" is actually a story about the strategies of mating and how the frog symbolizes its appearance of an unsuitable mate to a suitable one. In a completely different turn on fictional fairy tales influencing society, Dr. Anna IdstrГ¶m and Dr. Elisabeth Piirainen, experts on endangered metaphors, instead argue that animal imagery in metaphors, idioms and tales of the Inari Saami people are actually based on real animal behavior in their work, "The wolf – an evil and ever–hungry beast or a nasty thief? Conventional Inari Saami metaphors and widespread idioms in contrast." Finally, in addition to how specific animal stereotypes and imagery affect elements of western society, Dr. Lewis Seifert, a professor of French literature, tackles the subject of animal–human hybrids in fairy tales and how they are able to separate their "animal half" from their "human half" in "Animal–Human Hybridity in d'Aulnoy's "Babiole" and "Prince Wild Boar'." • 34. Disney's Racial Messages In The Princess And The Frog Disney has been known to have racial messages located within their movies for many years. During the time period when some of the more racial films were made, racism was more common in society. It was not nearly as frowned upon and was more culturally accepted. As time has progressed, the Disney Corporation has also progressed as well. They went from being completely stereotypical and racist against African Americans in Dumbo to having an African American princess in The Princess and the Frog. Many try to find arguments that show Disney is no better today than it was in 1940's, but it is evident that Disney no longer wants to be seen as a racist and impure company. • 35. The Frog King Symbolism The Frog King has a lot of symbolism and lessons? Written within it. One of the big things I believe this story was written for was to show the young girls reading it that arranged marriage wasn't that bad. At first the girl is detested by the frog, but is still forced to honor her promise by her father. She still despises the frog until she either kisses him or is thrown against the wall, depending on the version, and changes into a handsome prince. This just goes to show forced marriages can still turn out good and it isn't as bad as it first seems. I also believe the gold ball could further symbolize arranged marriage. Gold is often a color that is associated with wealth and the girl looses "her favorite toy" which is the golden ball. I believe in some situations this could show how her family lost their wealth and is marrying the daughter off to a "frog king" to get it back. Similar to how the frog retrieves her golden ball, he returns the wealth to her/ her family. The gold ball could also symbolize a couple other things. Gold is used to make jewelry and other valuable things, but nots in it raw form. The young immature princess hasn't been shaped into a person yet, similar to the unshaped gold ball. She is without her own morals or ideas, she promises to the frog she will let him sleep with her and is more than willing to break this promise if not for the stern words of her parents to honor her word. Many fairy tales involve this theme of a young/beautiful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Gender Socialization : The Princess And The Frog Gender socialization takes place in our everyday lives whether we subconsciously know it or not. Gender socialization is the socially learned expectations and behaviors associated with members of each gender. For example, If I were to say it takes my friend at least 45 minutes to do their hair before school everyday, you would assume I am speaking about a friend who is a female as opposed to a friend who is male. This is because of the idea of gender socialization. As I stated earlier, gender socialization is apart of our everyday lives and we categorize many things by gender. Even as children it is very clear at a young age that kids know what the idea of a man is supposed to be and the idea of what a woman is supposed to be. In the children's movie, The Princess and the Frog, released in 2009, there are many examples of gender socialization among the characters, specifically Tiana, Eli "Big Daddy" La Bouff, and Dr. Facilier. Tiana is a poor, struggling youngAfrican American woman in the city of New Orleans. Her father passed away when she was a child, which resulted in her only growing up with a mother. She is a woman who is kind to everyone and works multiple jobs everyday to reach her dream of saving enough money to open up her own restaurant. She is the stereotype of the average young black female who is struggling everyday to earn money and takes on jobs that are more geared towards woman, like being a waitress. • 37. African-American Character Representation In The Princess... Was Disney ever racist? When the average consumer thinks of The Walt Disney Company they would probably associate them with whimsical animated films and the gigantic theme parks with kids running about having fun. However the terms racial discrimination, nationwide brainwashing and evil mega conglomerate would never be linked with the likes of Disney nor Walt Disney, the company's co–founder. Though such claims may be passed off as ridiculous and/or obscene, one can look through films across time, namely around their 1960–1990 period, and see a picture, a picture depicting severe gender and racial stereotypes and discriminatory representations spanning decades. Such a picture does not remain static, instead it shifts and turns like a film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It isn't just one character however, as most of the characters she encounters are of the same ethnicity, including the townspeople and the prince. This could be interpreted as accidental or possibly a way for Disney to avoid featuring someone of colour on screen for as long as possible, most likely; however, the racial traits have withered away from Disney's workforce over time, instead accompanying the more politically correct perks of the 21st ... The creation of fairy tales is important in the development of social norms. Children everywhere would read fairy tales and learn from them. As a result, these fairy tales are translated into multiple languages and allows people with different backgrounds to understand and relate to the story. • 40. Disney Princess Role Model Essay For most parents, it is important for their daughters to grow up with strong female influences around them. The role models would impart on the young girls the necessary standards to compare themselves to learn their intrinsic worth and fight the opinion that women are inferior to men. Many times they look to the media for such influences. Disney princesses have for decades been the representation little girls see; however, not all of them are positive. The Disney Princess brand is broken down into three generations, or waves. The first generation, including Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, perpetuate sexism because they teach young girls that their value lies in their beauty and their relationship with a man. The women became known as suffragists, and the believed women could have important roles outside the home (Giele 117). They pressured for women's entrance into the public sphere and for equal opportunities (Giele xi). However, their efforts were belittled by men who feared for their status. The men discredited the women's femininity by calling them mannish (Giele 129) but still exploited their bodies in the media (Archer 15). In order to take control over women's representation, feminists started wearing "bloomers" instead of the restricting and confining skirts (Jules 7). By 1989, women started getting even more positive images in media with TV show sitcom heroines. Roseanne, an overweight, funny, workingmother, captured her audience by yelling, "I am a women. Hear me roar!" (Archer 18). Society has advanced considerably since then, but woman and girls still search for positive influential role models in the media to disrupt the notion that men are superior to women.
