A Manual For Uf Health Family Medicine Nurse Assistants
How To Take The Four Main Vital Signs A manual for UF Health Family Medicine Nurse Assistants By: Lauren Golom Vital Signs The four main
vital signs taken at any doctor's visits, emergency centers, or even at home are body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure.
Measuring vital signs allows any professional to detect health issues or various medical problems and any person to be aware of his or her
medical health. Body Temperature Body temperature is taken to make sure the body is doing it's job of regulating the ideal temperature for certain
processes to continue successfully in the body. When the outside temperature gets too hot or too cold, our bodies have ways to keep our internal
temperature in a safe range, such as sweating and shivering. A normal body temperature is 98.7В°F or 37В°C. There are a few different ways to
take the temperature of a patient. The most common, and the one we will explain, is oral temperature. Materials: Oral Thermometer, plastic caps, a
pair of gloves 1.Put on gloves before proceeding with any steps. 2.Take oral thermometer and turn it on by pressing the ON/OFF button. 3.Explain to
your patient that you need to take their temperature to make sure they are not running a fever. 4.Once the thermometer is turned on, ask your patient to
sit in an upright position and relax. 5.Take the metal probe at the end of the thermometer and insert it into a plastic cap. SAFETY HAZARD: Do NOT
put the uncovered probe into a

College Admissions Essay: The Benefits Of Family Medicine
Family medicine has always been my career choice, even before I entered into medical school. I was about five years of age when I started noticing
that my immediate elder brother sometimes wake up at the middle of the night screaming in pain and I would always be asked to continuously
massage him and attend to his other needs until my parents would have the money to take him to the hospital. It was really exhausting and demanding
especially for a little child my age but I would always remain patient and supportive all through the night with no more sleep because I wanted my
brother to remain alive, after having witnessed two other children die of similar condition. My parents informed me that my brother's condition is from
his blood, that

My Rotation In Family Medicine (CV)
I just received information from Program Coordinator and I applied immediately. I will take two mins to clarify few things.
The purpose of writing this email is to clarify few things in my CV, as I received call from my Family Medicine program yesterday. They told me "that
I have worked in rural areas back n country, which gives a idea that I am interested to work as PCP after my residency. But in US I do not have any
rotation in Family Medicine, that raises doubt that weather I am just taking family medicine as backup for myself and therefore we are unable to
consider your application"?
The place from where I belong, there is no family medicine taught in particular and there are no rotations of family medicine, and internist work as PCP

Persuasive Speech On Precision Medicine
We live in a world we're we have many diseases. We worry how we're going to cure all these diseases. Many families have struggled and lost there
really close loved ones because of diseases we don't have cured for. There's so many people with down syndrome or cancer, and families are scared
because they don't know what to do with this situation. Well our scientists are trying to help this world by advancing more of our precisionmedicine.
This will benefit and help us find a better way to find the right medicine for the right disease. With the help of human's knowledge and technology, this
will help advance our medical field and help us saved millions of life. (Weill Cornell Medicine)
So what is this thing we're talking about that could save millions of life? Well we're talking about Precision Medicine. Precision medicine is a way
of having a certain type of medicine that will work best for a specific disease. It's not only on specific disease but also specific person; scientist will
analyze your genes, environment, and DNA to find the certain medicine for you. For example, if I am sick with lung cancer, doctor and scientist will
look through my genes and how I lived life to find the more precise and most effective medicine.
This is why precision medicine will be a huge help to our world because we have more diseases we don't know of and how are we going to cure those?
With precision medicine we could make our world a better place. (WebMD, 1)
What are the updates we have today about precision medicine? Today we have a lot of medicine for certain diseases. But some of those medicines
are just temporary, a tumor could grow back after you get it remove. Also there is more diseases we don't have cure for, and we also don't know all the
diseases that could be out there so this we're precision medicine will be
the most impactful to our world. Although we use high technology today and use medical records, we need to be more precise so that we could find
the accurate medicine. (WebMD)
What does the future hold for precision medicine? The future for precision medicine has a big potential to be efficient. As the world's technology
advances and more knowledge will be known about medicine. We will be able to find more

I Volunteered At The Rotary International And Lions Clubs...
Growing up in India, I was a volunteer for the Rotary International and Lions Clubs International. I volunteered at medical camps, annual polio
immunization programs and free clinics in Bhimavaram, a town with limited access to public health care services. I primarily assisted General and
Family practitioners; I was amazed at how they could manage a broad range of medical conditions and patient populations. I was attracted towards
the intellectual challenges, the art of diagnosis and the fulfillment that comes from taking care of a variety of patients. I was appreciated for my
ability to educate and rationalize with patients of all age groups. This experience played a significant role in my decision to build a career in medicine
that would enable me to take care of a variety of patients and make a positive impact on the community 's health.
When I was 18 years old, I moved to Auckland, New Zealand. A focused and hardworking person, I worked part–time and volunteered throughout
college. Working as a laboratory assistant for AsureQuality Limited's multidisciplinary laboratory helped me in perfecting my bench skills and
developing an appreciation for dedication, patience and safety. Volunteering for the Manukau Community Transport program was a satisfying
experience. We assisted in the transport of older adults and low–income patients to and from doctor's appointments, interacting with them and
understanding the financial and support service issues they often faced. We worked

Pediatrician Application Essay
My life experiences have prepared me for a career in family medicine. I find such a field to require genuine interest, dedication, and the ability to
communicate and relate to patients of all age groups. Upon entering medical school with an interest in pediatrics, which stemmed from a wonderful
rapport with my own pediatrician, I assumed pediatrics was the field for me. I soon discovered, however, that I was interested in working with a
wide variety of age groups and especially the geriatric population. I decided I wanted a career that allows me to work with an array of age groups
and allows for me to continue following pediatric patients after they become adults. I remember feeling upset after the clinic where my pediatrician

Being the oldest of four siblings, I often find myself taking on the role of the third parent. As a result, I become more of a disciplinarian, with a
stricter nature. My experiences with the geriatric and pediatric population have allowed me to become a better listener. To be more receptive and
open–minded. By listening to my patients and students tell me about the good and bad aspects of their lives, I have noticed a common trend. They
all want to be heard. I have learned to be more patient in all aspects of my life, and to take the time to listen to my siblings and understand their
perspective. As a result, my relationship with them has become much more open and continues to develop strongly. Not only do I feel like my life
experiences have prepared me for a career in family medicine, I've found that family medicine is mutually beneficial in my life. It can best be
described as a harmonious symbiotic relationship. Many experiences in my life have helped me decide, without a doubt, that the field of family
medicine is the path for me. My desire to treat and heal patients drives me to become a successful physician. I look to the future with enthusiasm and

My Passion : The Duo Of Family And Medicine Essay
"My passion: the duo of family and medicine". "A profession that complements one's passion is a way of life". This is my philosophy. I was
introduced to the world of medicine through my father. He suffered from severe asthma and got treatment from a nearby primary health center. I
always saw him leaving the consultation room with the symptoms alleviated. As an innocent child, I thought of doctors as magicians who cured the
patients in the blink of an eye. My childhood curiosity molded me to who I am today; "a Medical Doctor".
Medical school taught me that doctors were not magicians, but equipment of God. I always strived to follow my medical school's motto "Service
with Love". During the clinical rotations, I noticed that the knowledge I gained by spending time with patients was much more than what I had
learned from books and lectures. Voluntary participation in a series of health fairs and medical camps in rural areas drew my attention towards
primary care. One incident that touched by heart was the death of my uncle. I was very close to him as he was the one who inspired me to chase
my dreams. While I was in the final year of medical school, my uncle complained about some vague abdominal discomforts. I was concerned and
suggested consulting his family doctor as it has been a while since he had seen him. My uncle did not realize the seriousness of the issue and delayed
the consultation. I saw him at a family gathering and decided to examine him myself. I was shocked and

An uneaten sandwich, oddly enough, could be credited to my emboldened commitment and my newfound love for medicine. Before delivering the

in the human body. Furthermore, medicine was attractive because I enjoyed teaching, directing and explaining biological concepts to my students as a

It became evident that Ryan requested for food not because he's hungry nor disturbing as many nurses described him. Ryan wanted someone to listen

While free from my normal duties of assisting nurses in moving patients, taking vital signs, emptying catheters, and asking hospital staff questions, I

I had the opportunity to follow my passion and change direction of doing medicine, but I was afraid of letting my family other than myself down. In

first option, considering the reputation and the impact of such profession will mean to my family. In fact, deep down in my heart, I knew exactly what
I wanted and, medicine was purely my family's choice.
As you may notice, in Uganda I applied for medicine and civil engineering altogether. This course has a distinct relationship to each other's but, no
one questioned why I applied to such different course at the same time. I kept the truth to myself and I wanted to follow what my family wanted
me to do. This was something I was sure that I would end up picking a wrong choice, and get on a wrong train and headed to a wrong future. The

Adams et al., (2002) pointed out that one of the greatest challenges faced is related to the complex needs patients related to emotional and social
challenges. They share that all doctors, at some point in an interview, stated that there was "at least one situation where an elderly patient's medical
needs overlapped with psychosocial and/or administrative difficulties" (p. 840). The authors go on to explain that physicians acknowledge that
resources in the community were generally subpar. The doctors also reported that arranging in home care and other community services was difficult
because these avenues were best navigated by social workers (Adams et al., 2002). Placing social workers within the physician's office could be a
simple way to address the holistic needs of the aging patients who are treated. Herzog, Gaertner, Scheidt–Nave & Holzhausen (2015) propose that
physicians' offices would be better served to develop an "interprofessional primary care network" (p. 9). This recommendation suggests that having
the social worker housed in the doctor's office would help bridge the gap between professional services. When aske specifically about embedding
social workers in the offices of physicians who work with older adults, Dr. Carron agreed that this could be a hugely beneficial asset and

Who Is A Doctor?
I have always wanted to become a doctor. It 's been a great journey for me so far and I have been gratified by all the experiences I have
encountered. When I was younger, I had a cousin who was diagnosed with Down 's Syndrome. I rattled the blue toy in front of my aunt's son and
watched as he sluggishly stared at my hand. The baby's symptoms were hard to miss: weak muscles, flat head and nose bridge, short neck, slanted
eyes, and abnormally low outer ears. My aunt was trying to cope with the situation while devastation, guilt, frustration, and grief weighed her down.
During this time, I was attending my second year in high school and learned as much about genes and genetic diseases as a high school biology
course would let me. Even so, I held on to what little knowledge I had of genetics and gave much thought to the baby I shared genes with who suffered
from an extra chromosome. In the course of time, the investment I made in understanding my baby cousin's illness nurtured my interest in human
health and grew into a passion for the field of medicine.
Six years later, I was honored to receive a diploma from the University of Istanbul Cerrahpasa Medical School as a trophy for my eager interest. Not
long after graduation, I was working as a general practitioner in a poorer socioeconomic area where I encountered the challenges of serving those who
faced the social problems of health in poverty. During my stay, I regularly encountered people who had problems brought on by

Personal Statement : Family Medicine
There's my father, two paternal uncles, two maternal uncles, five cousins, and two cousin's husbands. I really meant it when I say I come from a
family of physicians. Not to mention myself, three other cousins who are in medical school and my sister who started premed recently at FSU.
However, I am proud to say that my choice of wanting to be a family medicine physician was based on my own experiences and did not actually occur
to me until my last year of medical school. One of my Med school buddies nonchalantly mentioned to me during a casual conversation that family
medicine was "the best" field and this is how I remember my interest in family medicine having started. Moving forward, as I considered the
implications of a career in family medicine, I began to take into consideration the vast array of illnesses around me that I was naГЇve of before
becoming a medical student. There is my father recently starting losartan for hypertension, my mother and sister's migraines, my younger brother
having eczema on his arms in connection to his asthma, my uncle's rheumatoid arthritis, my aunt's recent hepatitis infection, another brother's Vitiligo
of the foot, an aunt who recently had bilateral knee replacements due to osteoarthritis, and a younger cousin in Pakistan, where I hail from originally,
who has a limp due to undiagnosed hip dysplasia. Then there is Pakistan's polio vaccination deficiency, and my uncle who has polio of one leg,

The Profession Of Physician Assistants
Family Medicine Physician Assistants Physician assistants are professionals that practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. The
profession was created in the 1960s because physicians began to notice that there was a shortage of physicians practicing in primary care. To solve
for the shortage of physicians, Eugene A. Sted Jr.,MD of Duke University gathered four men who had medical training in the military and created the
first class of PAs in 1965.This firstphysician assistant class graduated from Duke University on October 6th, 1967 and the profession had great support
from the medical community and the federal government claiming the PA profession was a "creative solution to physician shortages."1 Today, there is

The family medicine specialty is unique and different compared to other physician assistant specialties. Being that family medicine PAs see patients
throughout the duration of their life, they also see patients with a variety of illnesses. The family medicine specialty can be considered a "generalist"
specialty because they see patients for all things and not just focusing on one specific specialty which is perhaps why this specialty is favorable and the
most popular specialty within the physician assistant profession. There are many duties and responsibilities that a physician assistants job includes.
Although physician assistants practice under the supervision of a physician, PAs and physicians typically see their patients independently of each
other. Because PAs will usually see their patients without a physician in the room, they are able to write prescriptions for medications to help treat their
patients. Aside from prescribing medicine, PAs are also able to diagnose and treat illnesses, seeing patients in chronic conditions and managing their
progress, ordering lab work when needed and explaining the results to their patients, conducting physical examinations, and being able to educate their

One of the key differences between the US health system and Cuba health system is that Cuba focuses on preventing diseases rather than treating the
diseases. And everyone will be having family physician and nurses. For the Cuba health system there are no private hospitals, all hospitals and clinics
are controlled by the government and people are given access to the system without any cost. Every patient are visited by the family physician at home
once in a year, one with chronic disease will be visited frequently. If it is necessary patients are referred for specialty evaluation, but after the evaluation
they will come back to the community team for ongoing treatment.
This prevention orientation structure has produced positive result for the Cuba. Vaccination rates in Cuba is the highest in world. The infant mortality

The Case Of Roe V. Wade
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court, on the case of Roe v Wade, ruled to legalize abortion in all fifty US states. Forty two years after this
decision, approximately 56 million abortions have been performed in the US alone and this number continues to climb drastically day to day. For some
individuals, this number is simply not enough. For example, in her article, It Is Time to Integrate Abortion into Primary Care, Susan Yanow argues the
case that abortion is here to stay. With this observation, she further believes that the procedure should be made more available to all women, and
likewise, any physician should be easily allowed to perform abortions. Susan Yanow begins by advocating for the increased availability of procuring
abortions for all women no matter their income, location, or age. She offers a complaint against the many barriers for woman to obtaining an abortion,
"State restrictions... create almost insurmountable barriers to access, especially for rural, young, and low–income women." Yanow argues that women
should not have to travel long distances or deal with unnecessary requirements in order to "get the reproductive health care they need." She resolves this
by insisting on integrating abortion into primary care in such a way that family physicians at home be allowed to perform first trimester abortions. As
one continues through the article, Yanow's position becomes increasingly clear. She points out that most primary care clinicians already have the

Upon entering medical school I had no idea what type of medicine I wanted to practice. I had originally anticipated that I would become some type of
surgeon, because of my enjoyment of working with my hands and visual attention to detail. It wasn't until after completing my core rotations that I
envisioned myself as a family doctor.
During my rotations, the rounds were limited to inquiring about pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, passage of gas and inspection of surgical wounds.
The patient interaction was unfulfilling, as the patient interaction was superficial and difficult to see the patient as a whole. I did, however, enjoy
all the clinic aspects of all my rotations. I enjoyed caring for both the young and old, the well and sick, new problems and chronic ones. I was able
to get to know people of different backgrounds; from the homeless, to Hispanic migrant workers, to upper class suburban individuals. I enjoy
approaching complex problems in a systematic manner: taking a problem apart and dividing it into organ based systems, looking for connections, and
searching for the root of a problem. My strengths lie in my ability to address and incorporate a person's cultural and emotional well–being while
tackling a generalized problem and narrowing the options down to a single source.
Ironically, I began to have a change of heart while attempting to impress my internal medicine attending by staying late after evening rounds to look up

Reflection Paper
My grandparents still live in the house built by my grandfather in a farming village in the outskirts of Lianyuan in central China. To this day, my
grandma still carries home two large buckets of well water balanced by a beam across her back. My impression of my grandparents was that of stoic
figures able to tolerate significant physical hardships. During my most recent trip to the village, my grandmother revealed that my grandfather had
been struggling with extreme itching all over his body. Based on their geographical location, access to health care was poor and my grandfather
compensated with folk remedies that were of little efficacy. Additionally, grandfather was severely restricting his food intake out of fear that certain
foods would worsen the itching. At that time, I just completed my first year of medical school. I had just learned about pruritis and the histamine
cascade. Was it an allergic reaction, or was it something more insidous, such as kidney failure? I had a few Benedryl pills in my backpack and I
gave the instruction to my grandfather to take as needed for symptomatic relief. I was not sure if it will work and made a note to look more into it
once I arrive in Canada. After a few days of leaving Lianyuan, I received a call from my grandparents that for the first time in two years, my
grandfather finally had relief from his itching and was able to tolerate the foods he had previously enjoyed.
As my experience in clinical medicine grew, I discovered that

Homong Spirituality in Western Medicine
Throughtout the later chapters of When The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Fadiman describes how the Homong play a large role in the
population of Merced, but are not considered in the city's day to day life. This brings to light the strong ties of their own community of the Homong.
During this time of the book Lia has become more stable from when she had her major sezirue but the brain damage from her grand mal becomes more
apparent. Lia's father, Nao Kao, continuously uses the Homong medicine just as he has in the past which shows that he wants her health to return to a
somewhat normal state. In his view he sees a contradicting image that occurs between the Western medicine preformed by the medical doctors versus
the Homong traditional medicine practices.
Homong vs. Western
The main focus of Westersn medicine is different than that of the Homong. Western medicine is there to help prolong the life of an individual while
Homong, on the other hand, seeks to preform spiritual welfare. If Lia's family were to never leave Laos, she would of easily passed from one of her

As most Americans view the Spirit (much like the Christin conception of the soul) it is transcendent and can exist beyond the phyisical body. The
Homong view of the Spirit is that is can affect the body's physical health throughout life and will continue to live on after the physical life has ended.
This is where one can view the Homong emphasis on spirituality in their practice of medicine. In their practice the soul is thought to belong to God,
which this then takes precendence over the physical needs of the body. In Western medicine the physical body is placed first rather than the spiritual

Cultural Comparisons Between Three Cultures : South...
Today's healthcare is ever more diverse, and the medical providers interact with patients from an even wider range of ethnic and sociocultural
backgrounds. Thus, to effectively provide a quality healthcare to a diverse population, it is imperative for the healthcare providers to address all the
healthcare challenges that face the American society today. This paper focuses and discusses the cultural comparisons between three cultures: South
Indian, Filipino, and Polish– American.
The heritage assessment is significant in the field of medicine and an essential tool for healthcare providers and their patients. The heritage assessment
tool is used as an aid that fosters a deeper understanding of the families that are studied, thereby assisting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Indian culture
My cultural background is South Indian (Kerala) Christian. It is interesting to note that, there are various cultures within India, based on the state they
belong to. India has undergone rapid urbanization, with some states more than the others. Regardless of the state, most Indians value customs, culture,
traditions, and are very religious. Indian culture gives great importance to families and their involvement on one's health and well–being (Stanford).
Most Indians also consider their spiritual or religious group as part of their family. Families tend to be involved in the decision–making regarding
health and healthcare, in this culture. Thus, health is maintained by a joint effort of both the individual and their close–knit families.
Traditional Indian medicines, such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, Unani, and acupuncture, are not only popular in India, but also worldwide. Most Indians
are inclined to attempt herbal or traditional medicine, before relying on modern medicine. Older generation, mostly, prefer traditional medicine, before
seeking Western medicine (stanford). This culture considers mentalillness a stigma, leading to a delay in getting medical attention. The

My Interest Towards Family Medicine
My interest towards family medicine began during my early childhood years. I grew up in a small and developing city called Salalah, Oman where
health care resources were sparse. Back in 1990's, immigrants from low income and middle class families could not afford health care. My mother, a
nurse, and her friend, a primary care physician, were considered the healers of our neighborhood. Families and neighbors, who were sick, wounded, or
in need of medical advice, came to them for help. I grew up watching them become the de facto health care resources of our neighborhood. This inspired
me to venture into the field of medicine.
After moving to New York, I was determined to take advantage of the opportunities I had. While volunteering at a nursing home through church, I met
several family physicians and internists. I was impressed by their professionalism while interacting with patients. All patients were treated with the
same delicate care, despite their array of debilitated statuses. Poor hygiene did not distract the physician, but rather it urged them to provide medical
care to the best of their ability. The patients felt this and their immense gratitude was palpable. I realized how imperative it was for any physician to
value their character, attitude, and skill. My experiences inspired me to continue volunteering at nursing homes and church events, where I could give a
helping hand to those in need. In turn, I developed a compassionate, comforting, and respectful attitude.

My Interest On Medicine Stems From Family Experiences
Personal Statement
My interest in medicine stems from family experiences. My grandmother suffered from Parkinson's disease for most of her life and required constant
care. Helping my grandmother with simple tasks like eating breakfast, or helping her up the stairs was a humbling experience. This experience drove
my curiosity about the human anatomy, specifically the brain and how it is treated, which led to the realisation that, for me, a satisfying career would
involve helping others. A career inmedicine will allow me to combine these motivations, and to gain knowledge that I can use to serve more people
than just my family.
I recall visiting the neurologist with my grandmother and realising that she experienced differing levels of tremors according to her nervousness. I also
took from this experience the extraordinary will–power and infectious love that she expressed through her never–ending smile and warmth; at this point
one would forget that she was ever a Parkinson's sufferer. The consultant who treated my grandmother took the time to listen and showed compassion
and interest in his patient. I also observed how the successes of field research can influence the development of treatments for such diseases as
Parkinson's.
Inspired by my grandmother's fight against her condition, I experience working alongside a neurological consultant at John Radcliffe Hospital. There I
witnessed functional surgery on the brain for alleviation of the symptoms of Parkinson's.

Family Medicine Physician
"Put your good where it does the most!" This aphorism by Tom Wolfe, an American author and journalist, captures a guiding tenet of my life. I want
to become a Family Medicine Physician because I think it is one of the most challenging fields in medicine and would allow me to do the most good
for others. For me, medicine brings together science and people, with a chance to make a difference. Becoming a primary care physician would allow
me to serve others, develop close relationships with patients, families, and the community, and improve access to health care.
To excel in a field requires dedication, repetition, and genuine passion. Growing up I dreamed of being a ballerina. At the age of eleven, I moved
away from home and lived with a host family in order to attend a renowned dance school, the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. For nearly two years I
attended public school during the day, ballet classes and rehearsals each night and weekend, and rarely saw my family. Although leaving my home and
entering into a stranger's was incredibly intimidating, I happily committed thirty hours each week to training and approached ... Show more content on

To preface this assignment I am positive that there have been times that I have been discriminatory to people that I have encountered in clinic and
'real life' that I am unaware of. To focus on a more specific problem I thought of how the news and medical attention have been very focused on the
opioid epidemic and the inter–professional way that we as providers can help people. I saw a number of patients during third year rotations who are
on chronic pain medications. Before winter break I was in the Family Medicine Clerkship and this encounter I remember well because I realized that
I had judged a patient based on only a couple of words in their chart. The patient was a black woman in her 40s who had chronic back pain and was

I am originally from Egypt, where I grew up and obtained my medical degree. After graduation, I had the opportunity to practice medicine in a wide
variety of places from rural areas in the south of Egypt to urban tertiary care hospital in Saudi Arabia. In 2012 I immigrated to Canada and early this
year I became a Canadian citizen, which I consider an important milestone in my life. Now it is the time to achieve an equally important goal which is
getting into a Family medicine residency program.
My interest in Family medicine as a career started when I joined North West Armed forces hospital in Saudi Arabia. In the Family medicine department,
I practiced medicine in an excellent environment. Working side by side with highly trained family physicians from different countries enriched my
clinical skills and experience. I practiced evidence–based medicine, participated in guideline workshops, Peer reviews and numerous educational

Family Medicine And Family Practice
There are many misunderstandings where people mistakenly think that family medicine and family practice are the same thing, but they are
undoubtedly wrong. According to Brown, "family medicine is the academic discipline, composed of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Family practice is
the application of that knowledge in a system of medical care" (Brown, 1979). Dr. Lynn Carmichael also stated that, "an important component in the
definition of the family physician is that he has a 'tenured relationship' in which the doctor and the family members have mutually agreed upon
obligations. No other physician has this unwritten contract with patients of all ages and with the whole family" (Brown, 1979). In other words, family
practice consists of family medicine, but family medicine does not consists of family practice. This is what makes family physicians unique from other
physicians. They have their own bond with the patients without having to having to have some kind of written contract. It gives the patients time to
understand and get to know the physician and have an actual conversation. Whereas for other physicians there is a tendency where the physician is
having a one way conversation where the physician is only talking to the patient and the patient is just listening. Family physicians are distinctively
educated to care for you as a whole person, apart from age or sex. They diagnose and treat critical and chronic diseases and illnesses and provide
patients with monotonous

Project Based Incentive Payment System ( Mips ) And Its Mu...
Reports of MU death was premature
Shortly before I attended the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians winter meeting in January, news had just broke over the demise of Meaningful
Use (MU). Many AAFP members in attendance were eager to know about what to do next as these onerous MU measures were destined to end in
2016. Do they still have to report these numbers? Are they going to continue to be penalized if they don 't report these measures? What is going to
happen to Merit–based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and its MU metrics? There were so many questions, and so few answers from the man in
charge.
The truth is that when CMS Acting Administrator Slavitt made his announcement, he channeled the ghost of Mark Twain, who famously said that "the
reports of my death is greatly exaggerated." Sure enough, Mr. Slavitt, in the CMS blog a week later, did a complete one–eighty and took back his
words. Unfortunately, MU remains alive and well which means that if left as is, the penalty for not meeting MU stage 3 (MU3) will be catastrophic to
many family medicine practices. Even though MIPS won 't kick into high gear until 2019, with up to 4 percent penalty and higher in subsequent
years, for all intents and purposes, these practices will need to meet these requirements by the end of 2017 since data reporting will be mandatory for
all providers in 2018. For low–margin family medicine practices, essentially what Mr. Slavitt had done was to subtitle the MU3 final rules with Alan

Modern Medicine Cancer And Its Effects On Patients,...
Despite modern medicine cancer continues to claim the lives of many people all over the world. Throughout the years the number has increased
slowly for some types of cancers, while others have seen a drastic increase in the number of new cases each year. The International Agency for
Research estimates that there will be an "increase in the number of cancer cases globally to 21.7 million new cancer cases and 13 million cancer deaths"
(American Cancer Society, 2016). These figures are alarming and is attributed to factors such as an aging population, smoking, poor diet, physical
inactivity, and fewer childbirths, in economically developing countries. Similarly, in the United States the numbers are also climbing. Although there
are twenty–three types or of cancer sites, the figures for colorectal, lung, breast and prostate cancers are high in many states. This paper will take a
closer look at the disease, the impact on patients, families, treatment options and the required care.
Staging and Diagnosis
People have been affected by cancer for centuries. However, modern medicine has made advances in diagnosing and treatment of the disease since it
was "first documented over 3000 years ago in ancient Egypt" (American Cancer Society, n.d.). Cancer is the abnormal grow and multiplication of cells.
These characteristics often results in tumors which can be divided into two groups, benign and malignant. Benign tumors may cause discomfort and in
some cases affect normal body

Personal Essay On Pursuing A Career As Family Medicine
"What have you been up to?" A question I often get asked when reuniting with family, friends and other acquaintances, especially those I have not seen
in quite some time. It is a question that has become increasingly challenging to answer during my medical journey. To simply say I am in medical
school does not tell the whole story.
It was through my life as an athlete that I was first drawn to medicine. During my college career I suffered an injury that threatened to end my playing
career early. It was thanks to hardworking and knowledgeable medical personnel and training staff that I was able to fully recover and finish out my
college career playing the game I love. It was also during this time that I realized this what I wanted to do with my life. While I do not want to overly
romanticize what we do as primary care physicians, I realize there are many struggles and trying times, I do ultimately believe we have the ability to
impact lives and give people the opportunity to continue doing the things they. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Medical Advice And Treatment Of Family Medicine
Family Medicine is rooted in the notion that getting to know patients through continuity of care will allow physicians to not only integrate care and
prevent disease, but also to improve patients' quality of life. I am interested in the patient–centered setting in family medicine to take care of the whole
person – body, mind and spirit. To me, familymedicine is inspiring, challenging, and rewarding.
Prior to starting medical school, I volunteered at a free clinic in Durham, NC. Although I did not have the skills at the time to provide medical advice
and treatment, I shadowed a group of Family Medicine physicians after completing my duties at NIH triage. There all the patients were assigned to the
primary care provider, and their doctor had the chance to get to know them personally. By offering continuity of care, the physicians were able to
adequately and comprehensively manage chronic disease, focus on prevention, and coordinate care in partnership with other medical professionals. I
was inspired by the selflessness and compassion of physicians who commit to caring for the underserved and uninsured populations.
With the Trauma Surgery team in a hospital, I met Mike, an 83–year old retired teacher, was brought to the ED after a drunk driver hit him while he

Ideas and reforms for an improved access to high quality primary health care in Ontario: AOHC's perspective
Purpose
The purpose of this briefing note is to provide top three recommendations for the policy actions that AOHC should advocate in order to improve timely
access to primary health care in Ontario.
Background
Primary care is considered to be the first point of contact with the health system for the people of Ontario and is recognized, as the building block of
the entire health system. Every individual in the province needs a timely access to this service in order to maintain a healthy living. Ontario's medical
system focuses on delivering high quality primary care, but certain gaps within the system have resulted in an inequitable access to healthcare services.
Are Ontario's primary care reforms meeting the needs of its' residents?
Despite large investments in primary care reforms (PCR) over the years, there still hasn't been a significant impact in certain areas of the health
system, particularly those related to the 'access to care'. The Health Quality Ontario (HQO) data from 2014 shows that almost 94% of the adults
have a primary care provider, which has risen from 92% in 2006 1, 2. While the percentage of Ontarians who have a primary care provider has
grown, most Ontarians are unable to get an appointment to see their doctor the same day or the next day when they become sick 2. Less than half of
the population (44.3%) of the Ontarians are able to see their

Not all consults are accepted for case management, even if there is action by the case manager pertaining to the consult, these consults would fall into
the criteria of care coordination which are episodic cases. That being said, this case would meet the criteria for case management due to the multiple
specialty providers and multiple health conditions requiring the case manager to make at least monthly follow–up and as needed by the case manager
and the Mother. From the initial note, the case manager did not enroll patient into case management at the start of the initial interaction possibly due to
the review of his clinical notes and specialty referrals; it appears that Brady has had the necessary approved authorizations and referrals in place for
Developmental Pediatrician, Psychologist, ABA evaluation and Speech along with the prescribed medication for his ADHD management. Case
manager had provided Mother with contact information and to contact her as needed. During the time frame of 23 Sept until 20 January, Mother had
not made contact with Ms Sears, despite her 4 interactions, via T–Con and appointments with providers. After the extensive 1st meeting, one could
assume that the Mother was aware of the Ms' Sear's role, had her contact information and the instruction to call as needed. This was documented in both
encounters on 9 and 23

Family Practitioner Personal Statement
As I stepped off the plane for the first time at Maurice Bishop International Airport on the small island of Grenada I had no idea where the next four
years would take me. I was just a young man from a small town in rural Iowa who had never lived outside of the United States, setting out on an
adventure to pursue a degree in medicine. While working at a number of local health fairs on the island, I was able to spend a lot of time interacting
with members of the community discussing their personal struggles with health. For many of my patients it was a poor understanding of how to
maintain a healthy lifestyle or a lack of resources, while others were afraid of the stigma associated with disease and mental health. Though my time in
Grenada was short, it was interactions such as these that continue to motivate me to focus on primary care, preventative medicine, and decreasing
disparities in healthcare.

I was about five years of age when I started noticing that my immediate elder brother sometimes wake up at the middle of the night screaming in pain and I would always be asked to continuously massage him and attend to his other needs until my parents would have the money to take him to the hospital. It was really exhausting and demanding especially for a little child my age but I would always remain patient and supportive all through the night with no more sleep because I wanted my brother to remain alive, after having witnessed two other children die of similar condition. I volunteered at medical camps, annual polio immunization programs and free clinics in Bhimavaram, a town with limited access to public health care services. I primarily assisted General and Family practitioners; I was amazed at how they could manage a broad range of medical conditions and patient populations. I was attracted towards the intellectual challenges, the art of diagnosis and the fulfillment that comes from taking care of a variety of patients. I was appreciated for my ability to educate and rationalize with patients of all age groups. This experience played a significant role in my decision to build a career in medicine that would enable me to take care of a variety of patients and make a positive impact on the community 's health. When I was 18 years old, I moved to Auckland, New Zealand. A focused and hardworking person, I worked part–time and volunteered throughout college. Working as a laboratory assistant for AsureQuality Limited's multidisciplinary laboratory helped me in perfecting my bench skills and developing an appreciation for dedication, patience and safety. Volunteering for the Manukau Community Transport program was a satisfying experience. By listening to my patients and students tell me about the good and bad aspects of their lives, I have noticed a common trend. They all want to be heard. I have learned to be more patient in all aspects of my life, and to take the time to listen to my siblings and understand their perspective. • 9. My Passion : The Duo Of Family And Medicine Essay "My passion: the duo of family and medicine". "A profession that complements one's passion is a way of life". This is my philosophy. I was introduced to the world of medicine through my father. He suffered from severe asthma and got treatment from a nearby primary health center. I always saw him leaving the consultation room with the symptoms alleviated. As an innocent child, I thought of doctors as magicians who cured the patients in the blink of an eye. My childhood curiosity molded me to who I am today; "a Medical Doctor". Medical school taught me that doctors were not magicians, but equipment of God. I always strived to follow my medical school's motto "Service with Love". During the clinical rotations, I noticed that the knowledge I gained by spending time with patients was much more than what I had learned from books and lectures. Voluntary participation in a series of health fairs and medical camps in rural areas drew my attention towards primary care. One incident that touched by heart was the death of my uncle. I was very close to him as he was the one who inspired me to chase my dreams. While I was in the final year of medical school, my uncle complained about some vague abdominal discomforts. I was concerned and suggested consulting his family doctor as it has been a while since he had seen him. My uncle did not realize the seriousness of the issue and delayed the consultation. Adams et al., (2002) pointed out that one of the greatest challenges faced is related to the complex needs patients related to emotional and social challenges. They share that all doctors, at some point in an interview, stated that there was "at least one situation where an elderly patient's medical needs overlapped with psychosocial and/or administrative difficulties" (p. 840). The authors go on to explain that physicians acknowledge that resources in the community were generally subpar. The doctors also reported that arranging in home care and other community services was difficult because these avenues were best navigated by social workers (Adams et al., 2002). Placing social workers within the physician's office could be a simple way to address the holistic needs of the aging patients who are treated. Herzog, Gaertner, Scheidt–Nave & Holzhausen (2015) propose that physicians' offices would be better served to develop an "interprofessional primary care network" (p. 9). This recommendation suggests that having the social worker housed in the doctor's office would help bridge the gap between professional services. • 14. Who Is A Doctor? I have always wanted to become a doctor. It 's been a great journey for me so far and I have been gratified by all the experiences I have encountered. When I was younger, I had a cousin who was diagnosed with Down 's Syndrome. I rattled the blue toy in front of my aunt's son and watched as he sluggishly stared at my hand. The baby's symptoms were hard to miss: weak muscles, flat head and nose bridge, short neck, slanted eyes, and abnormally low outer ears. My aunt was trying to cope with the situation while devastation, guilt, frustration, and grief weighed her down. During this time, I was attending my second year in high school and learned as much about genes and genetic diseases as a high school biology course would let me. Even so, I held on to what little knowledge I had of genetics and gave much thought to the baby I shared genes with who suffered from an extra chromosome. In the course of time, the investment I made in understanding my baby cousin's illness nurtured my interest in human health and grew into a passion for the field of medicine. Six years later, I was honored to receive a diploma from the University of Istanbul Cerrahpasa Medical School as a trophy for my eager interest. Not long after graduation, I was working as a general practitioner in a poorer socioeconomic area where I encountered the challenges of serving those who faced the social problems of health in poverty. • 19. The Case Of Roe V. Wade On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court, on the case of Roe v Wade, ruled to legalize abortion in all fifty US states. Forty two years after this decision, approximately 56 million abortions have been performed in the US alone and this number continues to climb drastically day to day. For some individuals, this number is simply not enough. For example, in her article, It Is Time to Integrate Abortion into Primary Care, Susan Yanow argues the case that abortion is here to stay. With this observation, she further believes that the procedure should be made more available to all women, and likewise, any physician should be easily allowed to perform abortions. Susan Yanow begins by advocating for the increased availability of procuring abortions for all women no matter their income, location, or age. She offers a complaint against the many barriers for woman to obtaining an abortion, "State restrictions... create almost insurmountable barriers to access, especially for rural, young, and low–income women." Yanow argues that women should not have to travel long distances or deal with unnecessary requirements in order to "get the reproductive health care they need." She resolves this by insisting on integrating abortion into primary care in such a way that family physicians at home be allowed to perform first trimester abortions. As one continues through the article, Yanow's position becomes increasingly clear. She points out that most primary care clinicians already have the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I had originally anticipated that I would become some type of surgeon, because of my enjoyment of working with my hands and visual attention to detail. It wasn't until after completing my core rotations that I envisioned myself as a family doctor. During my rotations, the rounds were limited to inquiring about pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, passage of gas and inspection of surgical wounds. The patient interaction was unfulfilling, as the patient interaction was superficial and difficult to see the patient as a whole. I did, however, enjoy all the clinic aspects of all my rotations. I enjoyed caring for both the young and old, the well and sick, new problems and chronic ones. I was able to get to know people of different backgrounds; from the homeless, to Hispanic migrant workers, to upper class suburban individuals. I enjoy approaching complex problems in a systematic manner: taking a problem apart and dividing it into organ based systems, looking for connections, and searching for the root of a problem. My strengths lie in my ability to address and incorporate a person's cultural and emotional well–being while tackling a generalized problem and narrowing the options down to a single source. Ironically, I began to have a change of heart while attempting to impress my internal medicine attending by staying late after evening rounds to look up an interesting case on patient A.C.. ... To this day, my grandma still carries home two large buckets of well water balanced by a beam across her back. My impression of my grandparents was that of stoic figures able to tolerate significant physical hardships. During my most recent trip to the village, my grandmother revealed that my grandfather had been struggling with extreme itching all over his body. Based on their geographical location, access to health care was poor and my grandfather compensated with folk remedies that were of little efficacy. Additionally, grandfather was severely restricting his food intake out of fear that certain foods would worsen the itching. At that time, I just completed my first year of medical school. I had just learned about pruritis and the histamine cascade. Was it an allergic reaction, or was it something more insidous, such as kidney failure? I had a few Benedryl pills in my backpack and I gave the instruction to my grandfather to take as needed for symptomatic relief. I was not sure if it will work and made a note to look more into it once I arrive in Canada. In his view he sees a contradicting image that occurs between the Western medicine preformed by the medical doctors versus the Homong traditional medicine practices. Homong vs. Western The main focus of Westersn medicine is different than that of the Homong. Western medicine is there to help prolong the life of an individual while Homong, on the other hand, seeks to preform spiritual welfare. • 27. My Interest Towards Family Medicine My interest towards family medicine began during my early childhood years. I grew up in a small and developing city called Salalah, Oman where health care resources were sparse. Back in 1990's, immigrants from low income and middle class families could not afford health care. My mother, a nurse, and her friend, a primary care physician, were considered the healers of our neighborhood. Families and neighbors, who were sick, wounded, or in need of medical advice, came to them for help. I grew up watching them become the de facto health care resources of our neighborhood. This inspired me to venture into the field of medicine. After moving to New York, I was determined to take advantage of the opportunities I had. While volunteering at a nursing home through church, I met several family physicians and internists. I was impressed by their professionalism while interacting with patients. All patients were treated with the same delicate care, despite their array of debilitated statuses. Poor hygiene did not distract the physician, but rather it urged them to provide medical care to the best of their ability. The patients felt this and their immense gratitude was palpable. I realized how imperative it was for any physician to value their character, attitude, and skill. My experiences inspired me to continue volunteering at nursing homes and church events, where I could give a helping hand to those in need. In turn, I developed a compassionate, comforting, and respectful attitude. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. My Interest On Medicine Stems From Family Experiences Personal Statement My interest in medicine stems from family experiences. My grandmother suffered from Parkinson's disease for most of her life and required constant care. Helping my grandmother with simple tasks like eating breakfast, or helping her up the stairs was a humbling experience. This experience drove my curiosity about the human anatomy, specifically the brain and how it is treated, which led to the realisation that, for me, a satisfying career would involve helping others. A career inmedicine will allow me to combine these motivations, and to gain knowledge that I can use to serve more people than just my family. I recall visiting the neurologist with my grandmother and realising that she experienced differing levels of tremors according to her nervousness. I also took from this experience the extraordinary will–power and infectious love that she expressed through her never–ending smile and warmth; at this point one would forget that she was ever a Parkinson's sufferer. The consultant who treated my grandmother took the time to listen and showed compassion and interest in his patient. I also observed how the successes of field research can influence the development of treatments for such diseases as Parkinson's. Inspired by my grandmother's fight against her condition, I experience working alongside a neurological consultant at John Radcliffe Hospital. There I witnessed functional surgery on the brain for alleviation of the symptoms of Parkinson's. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Family Medicine And Family Practice There are many misunderstandings where people mistakenly think that family medicine and family practice are the same thing, but they are undoubtedly wrong. According to Brown, "family medicine is the academic discipline, composed of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Family practice is the application of that knowledge in a system of medical care" (Brown, 1979). Dr. Lynn Carmichael also stated that, "an important component in the definition of the family physician is that he has a 'tenured relationship' in which the doctor and the family members have mutually agreed upon obligations. No other physician has this unwritten contract with patients of all ages and with the whole family" (Brown, 1979). In other words, family practice consists of family medicine, but family medicine does not consists of family practice. This is what makes family physicians unique from other physicians. They have their own bond with the patients without having to having to have some kind of written contract. It gives the patients time to understand and get to know the physician and have an actual conversation. Whereas for other physicians there is a tendency where the physician is having a one way conversation where the physician is only talking to the patient and the patient is just listening. Are they going to continue to be penalized if they don 't report these measures? What is going to happen to Merit–based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and its MU metrics? There were so many questions, and so few answers from the man in charge. The truth is that when CMS Acting Administrator Slavitt made his announcement, he channeled the ghost of Mark Twain, who famously said that "the reports of my death is greatly exaggerated." Sure enough, Mr. Slavitt, in the CMS blog a week later, did a complete one–eighty and took back his words. Unfortunately, MU remains alive and well which means that if left as is, the penalty for not meeting MU stage 3 (MU3) will be catastrophic to many family medicine practices. Even though MIPS won 't kick into high gear until 2019, with up to 4 percent penalty and higher in subsequent years, for all intents and purposes, these practices will need to meet these requirements by the end of 2017 since data reporting will be mandatory for all providers in 2018. The International Agency for Research estimates that there will be an "increase in the number of cancer cases globally to 21.7 million new cancer cases and 13 million cancer deaths" (American Cancer Society, 2016). I am interested in the patient–centered setting in family medicine to take care of the whole person – body, mind and spirit. To me, familymedicine is inspiring, challenging, and rewarding. Prior to starting medical school, I volunteered at a free clinic in Durham, NC. Although I did not have the skills at the time to provide medical advice and treatment, I shadowed a group of Family Medicine physicians after completing my duties at NIH triage. There all the patients were assigned to the primary care provider, and their doctor had the chance to get to know them personally. By offering continuity of care, the physicians were able to adequately and comprehensively manage chronic disease, focus on prevention, and coordinate care in partnership with other medical professionals. Ideas and reforms for an improved access to high quality primary health care in Ontario: AOHC's perspective Purpose The purpose of this briefing note is to provide top three recommendations for the policy actions that AOHC should advocate in order to improve timely access to primary health care in Ontario. Background Primary care is considered to be the first point of contact with the health system for the people of Ontario and is recognized, as the building block of the entire health system. Every individual in the province needs a timely access to this service in order to maintain a healthy living. Ontario's medical system focuses on delivering high quality primary care, but certain gaps within the system have resulted in an inequitable access to healthcare services. Are Ontario's primary care reforms meeting the needs of its' residents? Despite large investments in primary care reforms (PCR) over the years, there still hasn't been a significant impact in certain areas of the health system, particularly those related to the 'access to care'. The Health Quality Ontario (HQO) data from 2014 shows that almost 94% of the adults have a primary care provider, which has risen from 92% in 2006 1, 2. While the percentage of Ontarians who have a primary care provider has grown, most Ontarians are unable to get an appointment to see their doctor the same day or the next day when they become sick 2.
