KIIT Group of colleges
organised science week at its
Gurgaon campus recently.
Various competitions were
conducted to mark the
changes that are taking place
globally in the field of science
and technology.
Several students partici-
pated in competitions. Some
of these included essay writing
on e-pollution and its pre-
vention, science slide show on
chemistry for engineers,
chemical pollution and its
effect, poster competition on
green technology and solar
energy application. A debate
on the topic Internet vs Books,
quiz on science and general
awareness was also organised.
Speaking about the week-
long event, KIIT Director
General Dr SS Aggarwal said:
“Experimental approach to
science and technology out-
reach extend far more widely.
Every community that boasts
a research university, a sci-
ence-based company, or a sci-
ence-based non-profit organ-
isation should organise such
festivals regularly. Festivals
don’t need to be big and
expensive; what they need to
be is creative and relevant.”

igital technology tools in edu-
cation (EdTech) have present-
ed several advantages over con-
ventional methods of teaching and
learning. The greatest advantage is the
sheer variety, and therefore flexibility
of use and innovation, that is available
to an educator. In reality, there are vir-
tually no bounds while learning using
a dynamic Information and commu-
nication technology (ICT) platform. It
has the potential to elevate learning to
become more meaningful, especially
when integrated with other aspects of
student life and activities.
Use of technology in some insti-
tutions is extensive than others.
Research suggests that what is of
greater impact is not whether tech-
nology is being used, but rather how
it is being used. Has it enhanced
classroom instruction, or has it been
relegated to gathering dust? Human
interaction and instruction cannot be
wholly supplanted by technology, but
it can certainly be used as tools that
improve efficiency and effectiveness.
EdTech is found out to be particular-
ly effective when used in seamlessly
interconnected ways. In a paradigm of
ICT integrated learning, students ben-
efit greatly from external support of
guidance.
In addition, the manner of its use
also includes the duration and nature
of technology engagement. For exam-
ple, while learning about the internal
structures of atom and particles or
Quantum Physics, words and literary
descriptions are often deficient. Here,
video files could be used where 3D
imagery would help students to grasp
the ideas better. The idea is to employ
the use of EdTech such that it does not
interfere or feel forced, but supports
traditional learning methods. In fact,
it is often rather more effective when
used for a short duration but for a
focused objective.
One of the most welcome features
of EdTech is its ability to provide a plat-
form for personalised learning. This
has proved a gift for instructors who
nearly always have to cater to students
with varying needs. Intensive learning
platform are created that aids differ-
ently abled students. Use of technolo-
gy in leaning subjects like science has
been most effective than in subjects
such as literature. Assessment and
evaluation is a sector of education
where effective use of technology is
much awaited. Present procedures of
tests and assessments through exams
and assignments are largely inadequate
with regard to their scope for gauging
higher order thinking skills, such as
evaluating, analysing and creating.
Techniques similar to the cur-
rently popular gamification may be
used in assessment of students. For
example, tests can take the form of
interactive materials or games, in
which students must apply what they
have learned creatively to solve real
time simulated programs. This will
introduce creativity and practicality as
a part of learning and provide larger
platform to learners to prove their
skills. Not only students, digital plat-
forms can also help in real time assess-
ment of teachers.
An avenue that has blossomed with
the advent of ICT is distance learning.
This is one of the most democratising
effects of EDTech. Relatively speaking,
geographical barriers and economic
disadvantages are no longer an enig-
ma on the way to learning. Using
Internet and mobile devices, now
training programs and classroom lec-
tures can be broadcasted anywhere in
the world. In line with this move
toward providing massive open and
online course (MOOCs), the
Government has devised schemes to
support its expansion.
Digital technology has aided man-
agement in institutions to increase effi-
ciency to a great extent. This in turn,
has been leveraged to devote more
attention to the qualitative aspects of
the educational experience for their
students. Common procedures like
applications, admissions, library
amenities and other administrative
tasks are now easier and expedited.
Technology has rendered transparen-
cy in such processes.
In addition, collaborative research
and information sharing have become
apparently simple and immediate with
technology such as cloud computing,
which is a station-independent inter-
active space towards which all activi-
ties are headed.

any students of Class XII
will be taking up the JEE
Main exam on April 4,
2015. At this stage, the students will
be anxious about simultaneously
balancing the Boards along with
their IIT JEE preparation. Here are
afewtipsthatwillhelptheaspirants
optimisetheirperformanceinboth.
Preparewithoutlosingtempo:
Whilethestudentsarepreparingfor
two distinct exams, the good thing
is that the syllabi and the paper set-
ting authorities are common. The
JEE Main exam paper as well as the
CBSE Board paper are set by the
CBSE. Sometimes considering the
proximity of the Boards, students
tend to exclusively focus on the
board type questions and start los-
ing touch with the IIT JEE type
questions. However, one must
understand that if one is preparing
for IIT JEE, one is automatically
preparing for the Boards. The focus
should be on understanding the
conceptsratherthanmuggingthem
up. The physics, chemistry and
mathematics remain the same, if
one has a thorough understanding
of the subject, one should be com-
fortablyabletoanswerthequestions
in both types of exams. One should
continuetotakeJEEtypemocktests
even during this period. In fact,
some students who take JEE type
tests even during the preparatory
holidays between the two Board
exams and do exceedingly well.
Attempt a lot of mock tests and
clarify doubts: There is a famous
saying that “if you want to succeed,
double your failure rate”. The
essence of the statement in the con-
text of exams is that the students
should not be scared of trying new
problems. The more problems we
are exposed to before the actual
exam,themoreisthelikelihoodthat
we would get it right if a similar
problem was asked in the actual
exam. Sometimes, students are
scared of taking mock tests think-
ing that they might not do well and
may start feeling less confident
due to a low score in the mock test.
However, it is important to under-
stand that not taking the mock tests
test is not the solution. A test only
exposes our weak points. Rather
than avoiding the mock tests, it is
important to ensure that if we
don’t get a certain problem right in
a mock test; we must clarify it as
soon as possible. A mock test is the
compass which tells us exactly
what we need to focus on.
Givespecialemphasistotheexclu-
sive Board type questions: There
are certain sub-topics in various
subjects which generally get more
weightageintheBoardsbecausethe
questions are subjective type. There
are also some topics which are part
of JEE Main but not part of the
advanceexamwhichsomestudents
tend to ignore during their prepa-
ration. For example in physics the
chapters on semiconductor devices,
communications systems and elec-
tromagnetic waves are parts of JEE
Main and the Board exam but not
part of the advance exam. Students
should carefully study these chap-
ters along with the questions from
the sample papers so that they can
comfortably handle descriptive
questions from these chapters.
A good source to prepare these
chapterswouldbeanArchiveofJEE
Main/AIEEE questions of the pre-
vious years for JEE Main along with
a good collection of sample papers
for Board.
CommunicateclearlyintheBoard
Type exams: While the Board
exam as well as the JEE Main, both
are set by CBSE, the approach
required for attempting the exams
is entirely different. A JEE exam is
an objective type exam where it is
not important to go through the
steps of calculation, one may do all
the calculations in one’s head or just
some rough scribbling in the ques-
tion paper. All that matters is that
youticktherightoption.Itdoesnot
matter, whether you do it by elim-
ination of other options, or use any
other trick. However, in Boards
there is step marking and your
working out of the intermediate
steps is as important as getting the
final answer correct. In our experi-
encesomeextremelybrightstudents
tendtolosethemarksinBoardtype
examinations not because of their
lack ofknowledge, but onlybecause
of their poor presentation and
skipping the steps/doing the inter-
mediate steps in their head or just
scribbling around in the margins.
Learn for Board from the writing
styleofthetoppers:Previous years’
toppers answer sheets can be found
on the Internet for all the subjects
by simply Googling “best answer
sheets”. In fact, we have tried to
analyse some of the best evaluated
answersheetsandwhatwefindthat
it is not that the student who
securedthebestmarksdisplayedan
extraordinary understanding of the
subject. What is important is to
write to the point and do a neat and
clean work. Try to visualise or put
yourself in the position of a teacher
who is assigned with the task of
evaluating hundreds of answer
scripts. What happens when such a
teacher comes across an answer
script which has a neat and clean
work? The first impression is that
this must be a good student and
accordingly it does in a way influ-
ence the examiner’s evaluation of
theanswerscript.Contrastthiswith
the situation when the examiner
comes across a shabbily written
answer script with calculations
scribbled all along the margins,
inaccurate free hand diagrams
made with a pen, and he has to
search for the final answer amidst
all the scribbling. It does put a neg-
ative impression on the evaluator.
Staycool: It is important not to
panic. Worry and brooding have a
negative effect on one’s ability to
studyandtestperformance.Thetest
should be written without any kind
of tension or worry.
Manage your time well: Time
management can differ from indi-
vidual to individual however on an
average, the effective attention span
ofaJEEaspirantisabouttwohours,
so it is a good idea to take a small
break after every two hours of con-
tinuousstudysession.Smallerstudy
sessions should be avoided because
every break in study session means
about 10 minutes being spent as
warm up time and about 10 min-
utes as cool down time. One must
be selective about the problems one
solvesduringtheselfstudysessions.
Do not spend too much time on
solving same types of problems.
Identify the problems that you
intend to solve at the beginning of
your session. Also make sure that
you memorise all the important
results so that you don’t waste the
examination time in trying to
derivetheseresults.Forthedescrip-
tive type of questions in Boards, the
theory should be memorised as per
the standard sample papers. Learn
to write all steps in a sequence.

Festivals don’t need to be big and expensive; what they need to be is creative and relevant.” 4=3C4=37AB;DC8=B B284=24F44:0C:88C ?A6A045AFA:8=6?A54BB8=0;B Uneecops that provides comprehensive HR solu- tions to all kinds of busi- nesses, recently launched HR-One. The greatest advantage is the sheer variety, and therefore flexibility of use and innovation, that is available to an educator. In reality, there are vir- tually no bounds while learning using a dynamic Information and commu- nication technology (ICT) platform. It has the potential to elevate learning to become more meaningful, especially when integrated with other aspects of student life and activities. Use of technology in some insti- tutions is extensive than others. Research suggests that what is of greater impact is not whether tech- nology is being used, but rather how it is being used. Has it enhanced classroom instruction, or has it been relegated to gathering dust? Human interaction and instruction cannot be wholly supplanted by technology, but it can certainly be used as tools that improve efficiency and effectiveness. EdTech is found out to be particular- ly effective when used in seamlessly interconnected ways. In a paradigm of ICT integrated learning, students ben- efit greatly from external support of guidance. In addition, the manner of its use also includes the duration and nature of technology engagement. For exam- ple, while learning about the internal structures of atom and particles or Quantum Physics, words and literary descriptions are often deficient. Here, video files could be used where 3D imagery would help students to grasp the ideas better. The idea is to employ the use of EdTech such that it does not interfere or feel forced, but supports traditional learning methods. In fact, it is often rather more effective when used for a short duration but for a focused objective. One of the most welcome features of EdTech is its ability to provide a plat- form for personalised learning. This has proved a gift for instructors who nearly always have to cater to students with varying needs. Intensive learning platform are created that aids differ- ently abled students. Use of technolo- gy in leaning subjects like science has been most effective than in subjects such as literature. Assessment and evaluation is a sector of education where effective use of technology is much awaited. Present procedures of tests and assessments through exams and assignments are largely inadequate with regard to their scope for gauging higher order thinking skills, such as evaluating, analysing and creating. Techniques similar to the cur- rently popular gamification may be used in assessment of students. For example, tests can take the form of interactive materials or games, in which students must apply what they have learned creatively to solve real time simulated programs. This will introduce creativity and practicality as a part of learning and provide larger platform to learners to prove their skills. Not only students, digital plat- forms can also help in real time assess- ment of teachers. An avenue that has blossomed with the advent of ICT is distance learning. This is one of the most democratising effects of EDTech. Relatively speaking, geographical barriers and economic disadvantages are no longer an enig- ma on the way to learning. Using Internet and mobile devices, now training programs and classroom lec- tures can be broadcasted anywhere in the world. In line with this move toward providing massive open and online course (MOOCs), the Government has devised schemes to support its expansion. Digital technology has aided man- agement in institutions to increase effi- ciency to a great extent. This in turn, has been leveraged to devote more attention to the qualitative aspects of the educational experience for their students. Common procedures like applications, admissions, library amenities and other administrative tasks are now easier and expedited. Technology has rendered transparen- cy in such processes. In addition, collaborative research and information sharing have become apparently simple and immediate with technology such as cloud computing, which is a station-independent inter- active space towards which all activi- ties are headed. At this stage, the students will be anxious about simultaneously balancing the Boards along with their IIT JEE preparation. Here are afewtipsthatwillhelptheaspirants optimisetheirperformanceinboth. Preparewithoutlosingtempo: Whilethestudentsarepreparingfor two distinct exams, the good thing is that the syllabi and the paper set- ting authorities are common. The JEE Main exam paper as well as the CBSE Board paper are set by the CBSE. Sometimes considering the proximity of the Boards, students tend to exclusively focus on the board type questions and start los- ing touch with the IIT JEE type questions. However, one must understand that if one is preparing for IIT JEE, one is automatically preparing for the Boards. The focus should be on understanding the conceptsratherthanmuggingthem up. The physics, chemistry and mathematics remain the same, if one has a thorough understanding of the subject, one should be com- fortablyabletoanswerthequestions in both types of exams. One should continuetotakeJEEtypemocktests even during this period. In fact, some students who take JEE type tests even during the preparatory holidays between the two Board exams and do exceedingly well. Attempt a lot of mock tests and clarify doubts: There is a famous saying that “if you want to succeed, double your failure rate”. The essence of the statement in the con- text of exams is that the students should not be scared of trying new problems. The more problems we are exposed to before the actual exam, themoreisthelikelihoodthat we would get it right if a similar problem was asked in the actual exam. Sometimes, students are scared of taking mock tests think- ing that they might not do well and may start feeling less confident due to a low score in the mock test. However, it is important to under- stand that not taking the mock tests test is not the solution. A test only exposes our weak points. Rather than avoiding the mock tests, it is important to ensure that if we don’t get a certain problem right in a mock test; we must clarify it as soon as possible. A mock test is the compass which tells us exactly what we need to focus on. Givespecialemphasistotheexclu- sive Board type questions: There are certain sub-topics in various subjects which generally get more weightageintheBoardsbecausethe questions are subjective type. There are also some topics which are part of JEE Main but not part of the advanceexamwhichsomestudents tend to ignore during their prepa- ration. For example in physics the chapters on semiconductor devices, communications systems and elec- tromagnetic waves are parts of JEE Main and the Board exam but not part of the advance exam. Students should carefully study these chap- ters along with the questions from the sample papers so that they can comfortably handle descriptive questions from these chapters. A good source to prepare these chapterswouldbeanArchiveofJEE Main/AIEEE questions of the pre- vious years for JEE Main along with a good collection of sample papers for Board. CommunicateclearlyintheBoard Type exams: While the Board exam as well as the JEE Main, both are set by CBSE, the approach required for attempting the exams is entirely different. A JEE exam is an objective type exam where it is not important to go through the steps of calculation, one may do all the calculations in one’s head or just some rough scribbling in the ques- tion paper. All that matters is that youticktherightoption.Itdoesnot matter, whether you do it by elim- ination of other options, or use any other trick. However, in Boards there is step marking and your working out of the intermediate steps is as important as getting the final answer correct. In our experi- encesomeextremelybrightstudents tendtolosethemarksinBoardtype examinations not because of their lack ofknowledge, but onlybecause of their poor presentation and skipping the steps/doing the inter- mediate steps in their head or just scribbling around in the margins. Learn for Board from the writing styleofthetoppers:Previous years’ toppers answer sheets can be found on the Internet for all the subjects by simply Googling “best answer sheets”. In fact, we have tried to analyse some of the best evaluated answersheetsandwhatwefindthat it is not that the student who securedthebestmarksdisplayedan extraordinary understanding of the subject. What is important is to write to the point and do a neat and clean work. Try to visualise or put yourself in the position of a teacher who is assigned with the task of evaluating hundreds of answer scripts. What happens when such a teacher comes across an answer script which has a neat and clean work? The first impression is that this must be a good student and accordingly it does in a way influ- ence the examiner’s evaluation of theanswerscript.Contrastthiswith the situation when the examiner comes across a shabbily written answer script with calculations scribbled all along the margins, inaccurate free hand diagrams made with a pen, and he has to search for the final answer amidst all the scribbling. It does put a neg- ative impression on the evaluator. Staycool: It is important not to panic. Worry and brooding have a negative effect on one’s ability to studyandtestperformance.Thetest should be written without any kind of tension or worry. Manage your time well: Time management can differ from indi- vidual to individual however on an average, the effective attention span ofaJEEaspirantisabouttwohours, so it is a good idea to take a small break after every two hours of con- tinuousstudysession.Smallerstudy sessions should be avoided because every break in study session means about 10 minutes being spent as warm up time and about 10 min- utes as cool down time. One must be selective about the problems one solvesduringtheselfstudysessions. Do not spend too much time on solving same types of problems. Identify the problems that you intend to solve at the beginning of your session. Also make sure that you memorise all the important results so that you don’t waste the examination time in trying to derivetheseresults.Forthedescrip- tive type of questions in Boards, the theory should be memorised as per the standard sample papers. Learn to write all steps in a sequence.
