Minor Character In Romeo And Juliet
Minor characters are always overlooked and thought of as unimportant, but they can make important
contributions. The Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona. The minor
character that will be focused on in this essay is the nurse that has raised Juliet since birth. The nurse
is a mother figure to Juliet and is her main confidant. The nurse makes several important
contributions in the play by helping Juliet with her affairs with Romeo, as well as offering Juliet
information, comfort, and advice. One of the most influential contributions to the plot of the play
that the nurse helped with was when she helped Romeo

Character Analysis Of Romeo And Juliet
The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a captivating romantic comedy about two
young lovers living in Verona Italy during the 1300s.romeo belongs to the Montague house who are
in a constant feud with the Capulets, Juliet's family .it is because of this the two lovers must conceal
their growing relationship even going so far as to be married in secret despite the fact that Juliet's
parents, lord and lady Capulet are in the midst of arranging for her to be married to the wealthy
count Paris ,a man who is more than twice her age and who Juliet has no interest in. both Romeo
and Juliet's shared and separate character traits strongly contribute to the tragic ending of the play
and lives of Romeo and Juliet. One shared character trait of both Romeo and Juliet is that they both
feel that their lives are valueless if they cannot have what they desire. For example when Romeo is
complaining to Benvolio about Rosalie he says "she's sworn off love and that promise has left me
alive but dead."(Shakespeare 25) by saying this Romeo is implying that it's as if he's dead if he can't
have what he wants. Juliet doses the same thing the night she meets Romeo after the party she tells
her nurse "if he's married I think I'll die rather than marry anyone else."(Shakespeare 71).suicide
was something that both Romeo and Juliet threatened as a way of getting what they wanted. An
example of this is when Juliet is asking Friar Lawrence for help getting out of her engagement

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's beautifully written tragedies portraying love, hate, and
destiny all in the town of Verona. During the play Shakespeare introduces a complex character,
Juliet, a thirteen year old girl, daughter of a wealthy family, the Capulets. When two teenagers cross
paths, will their love conquer all? Or will conflict get in their way? In this essay, I will argue that
Juliet is an admirable character because of her ability to evolve into a mature young lady all in a
period of five days. Juliet is Shakespeare's most powerful character portraying the epitome of a
woman with great strength amidst adversity.
Shakespeare helps me to admire Juliet by showing how much her character develops from a naive
adolescent who matures to an independent young lady throughout the course of the play. When we
first encounter Juliet, we get the impression that she is an innocent girl who is dependent on her
family. In Act 1 Scene 3 Lady Capulet asks Juliet on her thoughts on marriage, as to which she
replies with "It is an honor, that I dream not of". This suggests that Juliet has never considered
marriage before and is quite ignorant on the topic of love. Everything changes the moment she
meets Romeo Montague and falls in love with him and she develops into a young woman capable of
making her own choices. Shakespeare shows Juliet's maturity when we look at her reaction to
Romeo being a Montague. "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and

Juliet is not unlike the typical young women constantly struggling to find happiness and acceptance
from those who are closest to her. Young Juliet must confront the harsh reality that exists between
her and those who profess to be her friends and family, which is they failed to support her, love her,
and lift her up with she needed it most. In the timeless book, "Romeo & Juliet" William Shakespeare
writes a moving story about the betrayal, disappointment, love, and eventual death of Romeo and
Juliet. No reader can truly appreciate and understand the level of Juliet's struggles without first
understanding the roles the Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence and Romeo, their betrayal and their role in
her faithful decision. Some may say Capulet wouldn't have been the only one to protest Romeo and
Juliet's marriage, but he had the final say in Juliet's life. Lord Capulet, "Send for the county.; Go tell
him of this. I'll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning."(IV. ii. 21–22) If Lord Capulet never
moved up the wedding, there would have been more time for the news to travel to Romeo. Many
people argue that he was doing it for right reasons, that his decision was for the better of the family
and he did it unintentionally, but it was still his fault for forcing this marriage so suddenly on Juliet.
It is Lord Capulets fault because he is too protective over Juliet. Some people may say Juliet could
have just stood up to her father and tell him straight forward how she wanted to marry Romeo and
not Paris, however, he was just so overbearing and possessive, she was too nervous to come forward
and say it. Lord Capulet. "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee to a church
Thursday or never after look at me in the face." (III. v. 180–183) By Lord Capulet being so strict
with Juliet, moving up the wedding, and being too protective, Juliet was forced to make up an
incredibly dangerous plan, leading to the young couple committing suicide. Friar Lawrence makes
not only one, but three mistakes that all lead up to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. He gave a poison
to Juliet, he trusted someone else with a letter of great importance to deliver to Romeo, and he fled
at Juliet's tomb instead of trying to help her.

Supported Opinion Paragraph #2
William Shakespeare, the well known playwright and poet, likes to add unique attributes into every
major character of his plays such as, possibly, the most known play, Romeo and Juliet. One
character that has shown rash, impetuous and impulsive behaviour in the play Romeo and Juliet, is
Romeo Montague. Throughout the entire play, Romeo, makes rash decisions that cause significant
consequences. These consequences affect many characters and some consequences result in death.
Rash and impetuous characters can change the plot of the play and the final outcome of it. An early
example of Romeo, acting impetuous is when he goes to Capulet's orchard to meet Juliet. This
shows his rash thinking because Romeo, acknowledges the consequences of him being found in
Capulet territory, which is death. Romeo states this in the following quote; " I have night's cloak to
hide me from their eyes/And but thou love me, let them find me here/My life were better ended by
their hate/Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love" (II, ii, 75–78). This quote shows Romeo,
willing to risk his life, ignoring the potential consequences, showing his stubborn behaviour. Romeo
also shows his rash behaviour in the orchard when he and Juliet, impulsively decide they should
marry each other the next day, proven in this quote; "We met, we woo'd, and made exchange of
vow/ I'll tell thee as we pass; but this I pray/ That thou consent to marry us to–day" (II, iii, 62–64).
This shows his rash behaviour since he knows that he is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet and they
are family enemies, but wants Friar Laurence to marry them today (Monday in the book) even
though he just saw her for the first time yesterday. Because of this decision, dramatic irony stirs
since the Capulets and the Montagues are unaware of this, other than the Nurse and Friar Laurence.
Another time when Romeo acted impulsively in the play was when Romeo slays Tybalt, who is
Lady Capulet's nephew. He displays the reasoning behind his anger in this quote; " Alive in triumph!
And Mercutio slain!/ Away to heaven, respective lenity/ And fire–eyed fury be my conduct now!"
(III, i, 121–123). Romeo acts impulsively in this part of the play because he let his

What role does love take on in one's life? What changes can it bring to a person and how does it
affect the way they interact with others? What happens when infatuation is mistaken for love, and
the mindless consequences of the impulsive behaviour affect not just the one who is in the situation,
but everyone who surrounds them? What damage does it bring? The Shakespearean play Romeo and
Juliet revolves around the same thought, as to what happens when love overtake one's ability to
think and react to situations that comes to life or death, and how the decisions of it, unintentionally
causes pain to others. The author demonstrates the consequences of loving through the, when pain
and suffer causes them to end their lives to be with each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The night after the party, Juliet talks to herself and agrees to "... no longer be a Capulet" (II, ii, 36) to
show that their love is real. They decide to marry each other to spend as much time as possible with
each other. He asks Friar Lawrence, the priest, to wed them, but their eagerness to rush into a
marriage surprises the priest. Just before the marriage, he says "These violent delights have violent
ends,/And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,/Which as they kiss consume (II, vi, 9–11).
Because of love, Romeo first isolates himself from the world and thinks that he is not going to fall in
love again, or find anyone like Rosaline. Then when he meets Juliet, he rushes the marriage with
her; he cannot think properly because he thinks he is in "love".
Apart from that, Love can have a negative impact in someone's life when one tries to protect love as
to what happens in this play. Love destroys trust between Juliet and her father, Capulet, when she
tries to protect her love life; madness and hate takes over and destroys the relationship she has with
her father. He finds out that his daughter does not want to fulfill his dreams when she refuses to
marry Paris. Because he does not know that she is married to Romeo, he gets upset and angry at her,
then furiously calls her a "disobedient wretch" (III, iii, 166), his love for her disappears. Capulet,

Have you ever felt true love? Sometimes it does not always work out in that relationship. Maybe
outside factors affected how a relationship turned out in the end. In the tragedy, Romeo and Juliet by
William Shakespeare, both characters Romeo and Juliet died and had a bumpy relationship mainly
due to outside factors. Romeo and Juliet had many outside factors affect their relationship.
Characters such as Friar Laurence, Tybalt, themselves, or even fate. During the story, Tybalt and
Romeo never saw eye to eye which resulted in Tybalt's personality to possibly lead to a chain of
events. Tybalt challenged Romeo to a duel, "BENVOLIO: Tybalt, the kinsman to old Capulet, Hath

This quote means that Friar Laurence agreed to Romeo's proposal of marrying a girl he has barely
met and one that is from his rival family. An example that also supports the fault on Friar Laurence
is lying to Capulet about Juliet being dead when in actuality she was alive yet in a coma sourced
from his potion. An additional example could also be his devised plans such as the moment he
created the plan to get Romeo to open a coffin that Juliet would be in once she awoke from her
coma to be reunited together once more, which seems extremely suspicious and this mess could
have been prevented in the first place if he remained smart over his actions. Overall, Friar Laurence
could have prevented their deaths if only he was heedful with his actions. Because both Romeo and
Juliet were head over heels for each other they are also a possibility for the fault of their death. An
example could be when Romeo fell in love with Juliet in the first place which caused all the events
of the story to occur. Another could be when Juliet was suicidal, "JULIET: And ere this hand, by
thee to Romeo's sealed, shall be the label to another deed, or my true heart with treacherous revolt
turn to another, this shall slay them both. Therefore, out of thy long–experienced time, give me some

Many plays and other types of literary works use dramatic foil to portray the different extremes of
emotional and personality spectrums through characters. In the play, "The Tragedy of Romeo and
Juliet" by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare used many of his characters to portray dramatic foil in
his scenes. While Shakespeare did use dramatic foil, he used more than one type, he used his
characters to create dramatic foils that would draw in the audience and develop the characters being
used by having the two extremes make each other stand out. As Shakespeare starts the play two of
his characters immediately created a dramatic foil when they caught sight of each other and they
continued to do so every time after. Benvolio and Tybalt are ... Show more content on

As the play went on Shakespeare demonstrated another dramatic foil for the audience to witness.
The dramatic foil was forged from the extremes of Nurse's love for Juliet and Lady Capulet's
distance from Juliet. "This is the matter.–Nurse, give leave awhile;/ We must talk in secret. Nurse,
come back again./ I have rememb'red me; thou's hear our counsel./ Thou know'st my daughter's of a
pretty age" (1.3.7–11). The quote provided was able to allow the audience to view the dramatic foil
first hand since there was an immense contrast of the relationships between Lady Capulet and Juliet;
and Nurse and Juliet which depicts just how different the two adults were in Juliet's life. Lady
Capulet had a base relationship with her daughter and she realized it would not permit for her to
have a beneficial conversation with Juliet, so she called back Nurse who had a paternalistic
connection with her daughter. The dramatic foil between the two adults emphasizes the love of
Nurse and the withdrawal of Lady Capulet. "God in heaven bless her!/ You are to blame, my lord, to
rate her so" (3.5.169–170). Nurse is the one who says the quote and in the quote she defended Juliet
from Lord Capulet which further emphasized her paternalistic connection. This further exemplified
how much Nurse cared for Juliet since she went against Lord Capulet; whereas, Lady Capulet only
told Lord Capulet a few words, because she wanted him to calm down. Shakespeare used two

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
Many of Romeo and Juliet's plot points are driven through brash decisions made by the character
Tybalt, and his audible hatred of the Montague family. Tybalt is the young hot–heated individual
who will jump at any chance to destroy the Montague family and their heir. From the first time
Tybalt sees the main protagonist in the story he jumps at the opportunity to slay him and by just
hearing his voice asks his servant to "fetch me my rapier boy"(1.5.52) in order to purge the
Montague from the party. He shall "strike him dead" as he "hold it not a sin"(1.5.57) and by
accordance the murder would not be a sin in the eyes of his family. Tybalt without any thinking
instantly had made his decision that it would be alright to kill a man who had simply been enjoying
a party. And without any thought he had begun to plan for a murder that would jeopardize him
despite Prince earlier having stated that "If ever you disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay
the forfeit of the peace"(1.1.89–91). Tybalt had repeatedly acted on these violent tendencies which
had later into the story costed him his life as he had gone after Romeo without any thought besides
the emotional hatred and distaste he feels towards Romeo. In the street in the middle of the day
Tybalt had "under Romeo's arm, thrusts Mercutio in"(3.1.83). Even while being held back by Romeo
he had relentlessly slaughtered Mercutio as Mercutio had challenged Tybalt instead and because of
this Romeo later slays him as revenge for

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
One of William Shakespeare's most famous works is the story of "Romeo and Juliet." The play is a
romantic tragedy where several characters die within a few days. The play starts by introducing one
of the main characters, Romeo and later on in the story, Juliet is introduced. Romeo meets Juliet at a
party and they instantly fall in love. Juliet soon proposes marriage, they get married, but soon they
both die. There are several characters that could be to blame for the tragic death of these two
teenagers, but the three most blamable characters are Friar Lawrence, Fate, and Lord Capulet. The
most blamable character for the death of Romeo and Juliet is Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence made
on mistake which set off a chain reaction of other events that resulted in Romeo and Juliet's death.
In Act IV Scene i, Friar Lawrence said, "Ah Juliet, I already know thy grief, it strains me past the
compass of my wits, I hear thou must, and nothing may prorogue it, on Thursday next to be married
to this county," (DBQ:Project, 2013) and "if thou darest, I will give thee remedy." (DBQ:Project,
2013) The first quote explains Friar Lawrence's sympathy for Juliet having to marry Paris. Friar
Lawrence knows that Juliet is in love with Romeo, but she is being forced by her parents to marry
Paris. The second quote from Friar Lawrence shows a solution to Juliet's problem. Friar Lawrence's
"remedy" is to give Juliet a potion which would put her to sleep for a few days. The effects of the
potion would make Juliet appear to be dead, so Friar Lawrence would then send letters to Romeo
saying Juliet is not actually dead, and Romeo needs to come rescue her and then the two lovers
could live a happy life. While this plan was well thought out, it was not executed very well. The
letters never made their way to Romeo, so Romeo assumed Juliet was dead and he then committed
suicide. When Juliet woke up and saw Romeo was dead, she also committed suicide. Friar Lawrence
is the most blamable character for Romeo and Juliet's death because he was the one who gave Juliet
the potion in the first place. If Juliet would have never received the potion, Romeo would not have
committed suicide, so neither would have Juliet. While Friar Lawrence is the most

to the tragedy of the play. Romeo is one of the main characters of the play. He's very romantic and
he fell in love with Juliet the minute he saw her. Romeo was in love with Rosaline, but she never
showed any affection towards him. His friends thought that he would never get over her, but then he

Secondary Characters in Romeo and Juliet
While secondary characters are less important than the main characters of the book, they often have
a noteworthy impact on the story. In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a secondary
character, Friar Lawrence, plays a vital role throughout the play. The play takes place in Verona and
focuses on Romeo and Juliet, two star–crossed lovers from two feuding families; the Montagues and
the Capulets. The extremely violent feud between these families has been ongoing for generations,
extending out to even the serving men of both houses. Romeo and Juliet must profess their love in
secret because of the quarrel between their parents. This is a catalyst in triggering tragic events,
consisting of the deaths of many other characters, including ... Show more content on

To prevent Juliet's suicide, the Friar comes up with a plan. He says to Juliet, "take thou this vial,
being then in bed, and this distilling liquor drink thou off."(IV.i.95–96) Friar Lawrence wants Juliet
to fake her own death and lie in the tomb of Capulet, to get out of marrying Paris. However, this
plan backfires when Romeo does not receive the letter that the Friar had sent him and he kills
himself over Juliet's 'death', and Juliet in response kills herself over his death. The Friar's exertion
contributes to the plot, because the tragedy at the end of the play would not have occurred without
his actions. Friar Lawrence reveals major qualities about Romeo, including his obsessive and foolish
behavior. Friar Lawrence begins chastising Romeo for being over Rosaline, a woman that did not
return Romeo's love, and then falling for Juliet so quickly. Romeo then remarks that the Friar had
usually scolded him for loving Rosaline, to which the Friar replies, "for doting, not love, pupil
mine"(II.iii.87). Friar Lawrence is admonishing Romeo for his immature infatuation with Rosaline.
By doing this, it is clear that Romeo was obsessive over his love for Rosaline. After killing Tybalt,
the Prince declares Romeo's banishment and Romeo goes crying to the Friar claiming that death
would be a better punishment than banishment. The Friar responds to this by saying, "O deadly sin,
O rude unthankfulness!...This is dear mercy, and

Minor Characters In Romeo And Juliet
In the traumatic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the tragic result is and is not the
responsibility of the minor characters. The minor characters are certainly not responsible because
Romeo and Juliet killed themselves with their own free will, and none of the minor characters were
involved in this wistful event. As well as this, fate also had a significant role in guiding their
relationship to not work out as it caused many events to inevitably happen. However, I believe that
Friar Lawrence is accountable for part of the tragedy, as he did not do his best or go out of his way,
to ensure that his plan for Romeo and Juliet would work out. Firstly, Romeo and Juliet ended their
lives with their own free will, and no one encouraged or guided them to do so. An example is when
Juliet was asleep in the tomb and Romeo assumed she had died. Romeo quotes, "Is crimson in thy
lips and in thy cheeks, and death's pale flag is not advancèd there." This hence shows that Romeo
had an instinct that Juliet was not dead and he thoroughly noticed all the signs of a living and
healthy person; however did not look deeper or infer profoundly. At this point, Romeo drunk the
poison because he concluded that his life was not worth living unless Juliet was in it. This shows
how Romeo ended his life himself without the influence of any minor characters. Another example
is when Juliet stabs herself with the dagger. Juliet quotes, "Yea, noise, then I'll be brief; O, happy
dagger! This is thy sheath; three rest, and let me die." This also shows that Juliet killed herself with
no encouragement from minor characters and stabbed herself with her own doing. Juliet was too in
love with the idea of love, as she also thought she did not have a purpose without Romeo. Juliet had
so much more to live for and none of the minor characters expressed to Juliet, that Romeo was all
she had. These two examples intensively confirm how it was undoubtedly, not the minor characters
fault and it conveys how they are not responsible for the disastrous and devastating deaths of Romeo
and Juliet. Moreover, fate had a notable significance in regarding the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
Fate led on many events that were destined to happen, with

A foil is a character that is used to enhance the characteristics of another character (most likely the
story's protagonist) by a clear contrast between the two characters. To help bring the characters in
Romeo and Juliet to life, William Shakespeare creates foils to compare his main characters to and
show why they are better or a better couple in the case of Romeo and Juliet. While some of the foil
characters are obvious, like in the case of Romeo and Paris, or Juliet and Rosaline, in other cases it's
harder to see the contrast and the significance, as in the case of Romeo and Mercutio. The role of the
foil characters in Romeo and Juliet is also to show what could have happened if the protagonists had
made different choices. Throughout Romeo and Juliet it is made clear that Romeo and Paris are foils
as the both are in love Juliet and wish to marry her. However this often leads people to forgetting
about Mercutio and his clear contrast with Romeo. We see their differing opinions clearly in Act 1,
Scene 4, in which Mercutio tries to persuade Romeo to join them in crashing the Capulet's' feast.
Romeo takes love very seriously, pining and yearning for Rosaline, while Mercutio treats love as a
joke and something to be wary of. When Romeo says he cannot join them because he feels too
heavy–hearted, Mercutio tells Romeo to "borrow Cupid's wings, And soar with them above a
common bound" (1.4.18–19) Furthermore, when Romeo argues that love is "rough," "rude,"
"boist'rous," and

Romeo and Juliet a Tragedy of Fate and Character There is no doubt that Romeo and Juliet is a
tragedy of young love. What is in doubt is what contributes to the tragedy. The story of Romeo and
Juliet's love contrasts greatly with famous Greek tragedies such as Oedipus the King and The
Odyssey in which the source of tragedy is the main protagonists struggle against fate. Rather the
source of tragedy in Romeo and Juliet is both the character flaws that exist within in Romeo and
Juliet themselves and their fate. Romeo and Julie's fate was to be born into feuding families and to
be involved in a series of unlikely coincidences. Rome and Juliet both share character flaws or

It was only by coincidence that an illiterate Capulet servant was sent on a mission to deliver the ball
invitations and happens unto Romeo and his cousin Benvolio. The servant who cannot read the
names of the invited guests and therefore does not who to deliver the invitations to asks Romeo to
read the invitation for him so he can continue his deliveries. As Romeo reads the invitation to the
servant he discovers that his former lover Rosaline is an invited guest. After reading the names the
servant explains that the ball is open to almost everyone who is not a Montague. Benvolio then
convinces Romeo to attend the Capulet ball, setting into motion the entire tragedy (Smith, 1948). In
the play Romeo and Juliet fate conspires against the two young lovers by making them unfortunate
in their selection of friends and acquaintances. Romeo and Juliet's friends, family and acquaintances
are simply unable or unwilling to understand the love that they possess for each other. Juliet's

Romeo is a passionate intelligent young man, liked and admired throughout Verona. He is loyal to
his friends, but his behavior is somewhat unpredictable. At the beginning of the play, he mopes over
his hopeless unrequited love for Rosaline. In Juliet, Romeo finds a legitimate object for the
extraordinary passion that he is capable of feeling, and his unyielding love for her takes control of

The monologue of the Prince closes the play of Romeo and Juliet. It also puts an end to the romance
between Romeo and Juliet and the feuds between Capulets and Montagues. Although the speech is
very simple, it is significant enough to sum up the whole play with the central theme of love and
hatred In this romantic tragedy, it starts off with a fight between the two households, the Capulet and
the Montague. Then it shows us the intimate relationship between between Mercutio and Romeo by
persuading Romeo to the Capulets' party. In the party, Romeo meets Juliet and falls in love at first

Love is worth dying for. A statement that has many opinions surrounding whether it is true or not.
William Shakespeare explores this statement, as he writes his most famous play, Romeo and Juliet.
The play is set in the town of Verona in France, where two families, the Montagues and the
Capulets, struggle to keep peace, as the feud of many generations still splits the town in half.
Through their family feuds, the two young lovers, the Montague Romeo and the Capulet Juliet, try
to have a relationships. However, many events eventually lead them to the downfall of both
characters. Perhaps, the two wouldn't have ended the play in such a tragedy if Romeo's actions had
been different. A morally ambiguous character is one that cannot be seen as ... Show more content

Throughout the play, it is often seen, the love Romeo shows towards people close to him, like his
family and friends. However, Shakespeare uses hamartia to express the other character within
Romeo, one that is furious, violent and narrow minded. Romeo's friend, Mercutio, got into a fight
with the Capulet Tybalt, causing swords and words to fly between the two. Romeo tries to stop the
two, but Tybalt runs away. This is not after he has stabbed Mercutio though, causing Romeo to get
very upset. He lets his anger control his actions, ignoring everything else. "Now, Tybalt, take the
'villain' back again" (Shakespeare Act III scene i 20) Romeo exclaims as he begins to fight Tybalt,
eventually killing him. For the first time, the audience may feel scared of Romeo, as he can be seen
as a mad man. So, when Romeo gets exiled, the audience may troubled whether to feel empathetic
or glad. Romeo shouldn't be exiled because he didn't start the fight, and his newly wed wife, Juliet,
won't be able to see him. Romeo should be exiled because he is a murderer, dangerous for the city.
Romeo only killed Tybalt because he killed Mercutio, he was going to die anyway. All of these
opinions arise in one's mind, showing clearly the moral ambiguity found within Romeo's character.
Romeo's exilation lead to many events to happen in the play. Poor Juliet is left alone in Verona, and
has nobody to help her when her parents arrange a marriage between her and Paris, another

against their parents and end up getting married thanks to continuous help from Friar Lawrence.
They both end up killing themselves in the Capulet tomb due to the sadness of being apart and
pressure of their families. Friar Lawrence is depicted as a teacher or mentor to Romeo and Juliet.
Throughout the story, he gives them both wise life advise as he learns about how they are now both
in love. Friar also shows throughout the story how wise he is and how he tries to help Romeo and
Juliet with their complications. Throughout the play, Friar proves himself to be a knowledgeable,
helpful, and wise character who's actions ironically and unfortunately ended with both Romeo and
Juliet tragically dead in the tomb of the Capulet family. Friar Lawrence is one of the more wiser and

Character Development In Romeo And Juliet
The character of a young person is majorly developed by the influences of others. In the famous
tragedy by William Shakespeare titled Romeo and Juliet, the characters face experiences that change
them to grow into more knowledgeable people. Shakespeare demonstrates that influences from
others can impact a character's development. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet's character changes from
childish and inexperienced to mature, loyal, and wise from the guidance of Romeo's love, Capulet's
protectiveness, and her own self–conflict. Capulet's protectiveness allows Juliet's character to
expose her childishness. Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris if Paris can win over Juliet. Capulet
says, "And too soon marred are those so early made. Earth hath swallowed ... Show more content on

After she marries Romeo, she contemplates how she is excited to lose her virginity to Romeo
because she loves him. She says, "Hood my unmanned blood bating my cheeks, with thy black
mantle, till strange love, grow bold, think true love acted simply modesty. Come, night. Come,
Romeo. Come thy day in night." (Shakespeare, 3.2.14–18). Juliet speaks to herself of loving Romeo
and preparing to let Romeo take her virginity. Juliet is about to experience something that connects
to her development, as she is about to lose her virginity. Since she makes this big decision for
herself, she becomes more controlling of her actions and becomes more mature. Characters will
sometimes do anything in order to get their way, even if it means making an extreme decision. Juliet
is having self–conflict when she wants to pretend to die by congesting a vial of poison in order for
her to not marry Count Paris, and for her love with Romeo to continue existing. She says, "How if,
when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo comes to redeem me? There's a
fearful point." (Shakespeare, 4.3.31–33) Juliet fears that the outcome of her decision will not be as
she is hoping. Making a decision such as this where she is risking her own life to be with the person
she loves takes a lot of courage, therefore continuing to prove her loyalty and maturity.

Foil Characters In Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare is the greatest playwright in the history of the world, and one of his most
famous tragedy plays is Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two
star– crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Their families are in a feud and brawls
have taken place between these two families. Romeo's personality can be viewed differently from
different parts of the play with the other characters he is around. At one point of the play he can be
seen as a positive, tranquil man and the next moment later he is a vicious, stubborn person. Using
foils Romeo's character is developed by contrasting through Friar Laurence's wise personality,
Balthasar's loyal personality, and Benvolio's peaceful personality. Friar Laurence develops Romeo's
character through his wise personality making Romeo look stubborn. Romeo demonstrates as being
stubborn when he finds out he is banished and is willing to kill himself by saying, "Wert thought as
young as I, Juliet thy love, an hour but married, Tybalt murdered, doting like me and like me
banished, then mightst thou speak, then mightst thou tear thy hair, and fall upon the ground, as I do
now, taking the measure of an unmade grave man" (3.3.65–70). Romeo is willing to take his life just

When Benvolio is talking to Romeo he says, "Romeo, away, be gone! The citizens are up, and
Tybalt slain. Stand not amazed; the Prince will doom thee death" (3.1.131–133). Here Benvolio tells
Romeo to be gone because he acted before thinking. Tybalt would have died either way, but Romeo
killed him and now he would be punished. Furthermore, Romeo let anger get to him to make him
kill Tybalt. Benvolio said to Romeo before the fight not to fight Tybalt or get in the way, which led
to Mercutio dying because Romeo wanted the fight to stop. Romeo then got aggressive and fought

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is the result of choices and actions on the part of several characters
in this play: including Friar Lawrence, Romeo, and Lord Capulet. Friar Lawrence marries Romeo,
and Juliet without anybody's permission, also he gives Juliet the sleeping potion, and lastly, he does
not properly inform Romeo that Juliet was not dead. Romeo rushes into his relationship with Juliet,
kills Tybalt when in a rage, and immediately drinks the poison after seeing a sleeping Juliet. Lord
Capulet took part in the fight at the start, he also tells Paris to marry Juliet, and lastly, he threatens
Juliet to marry Paris. All these events were not fate, but where choices each character made. The

Friar John says to Friar Lawrence "I could not send it–here it is again". (5.2. 14). Friar John tells
Friar Lawrence that he was unable to send the letter to Romeo because his messenger was
quarantined. This led to the final tragedy because Romeo thought Juliet was dead, and not just
sleeping. Ultimately Friar Lawrence is very much to blame for his naiveness and believing
everything would go his way.
Another important person that lead to Romeo and Juliet's demise was Romeo because of his
impulsiveness when making important decisions. Romeo's first impulsive decision was to rush into
his relationship with Juliet. This is proven when Friar Lawrence says "Holy Saint Francis, what a
change is here!/ Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear,/ So soon forsaken? Young men's love
then lies/ Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes". (2.3. 65–68). Friar Lawrence is saying that just
days ago he was in love with Rosaline and now he is in love with Juliet. This helped build up to the
final tragedy because of their secret marriage and how Juliet could not marry Paris. Another reason
Romeo is to blame because he kills Tybalt out of rage. Romeo screams at Tybalt "Alive in triumph–
and Mercutio slain!/ Away to heaven, respective lenity,/ And fire–eyed fury be my conduct now".
(3.1. 84–86). Romeo tells Tybalt that he is done with mercy and is ready to let rage guide his
actions. This led to the final tragedy because Romeo kills Tybalt making the Capulets dislike the

Dynamic Character In Romeo And Juliet
With Romeo's lack of strength, comes a static character who never changes, stays a petulant
character throughout most of the story, never truly changing. Romeo at the beginning of the play
was whining over the fact that Rosaline would not become romantically involved with him. Romeo
whined that "... [Rosaline] She'll not be hit/ With Cupid's arrow. She hath Dian's wit./ And, in strong
proof of chastity well arm'd/ From love's weak childish bow, she lives uncharmed." (I.I.199–203).
Romeo is complaining to Benvolio that she will not love him and there is nothing he can do about it.

depression. Later, after he married Juliet and killed Tybalt he learned he was to be ... Show more

Juliet may have been naive in some parts of the story, but she changed and grew up later in the story.
After Romeo came up to Juliet and the Nurse called her away she told him "If that thy bent of love
be honorable,/Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow/By one that I'll procure to come to
thee" (II.II.143–145). This was only the second time she met him and she was already agreeing to
marry her. These may have been different times, and parents during this time chose their children's
spouses, but Juliet is doing this of her own accord. However, later she grew up and became even
more mature with Tybalt's death. When the Nurse revealed the full details of Tybalt's death, Juliet
realized that if Romeo didn't kill Tybalt, Tybalt would've killed Romeo. When Juliet realized this,
she said "Back, foolish tears, back to your native spring." (III.II.104). Juliet willing her tears back
not only shows her maturity, but it also shows her strength. Juliet became mature and strong enough
to realize what would've happened if Romeo didn't kill Tybalt. She instead of crying over Tybalt's
death, she cried over what could've happened to her

Romeo And Juliet Disobedient Character
The play "Romeo and Juliet" is a comedy turned tragedy. Written during the Elizabethan era, by
William Shakespeare in 1596. The play is renowned for its tale of star crossed lovers from opposing
families. Although the play is written from Romeo's point of view, we see Juliet's character progress
through different stages in the play unlike Romeo's character, who for the most part stays the same.
The play shows Juliet develop from an (1) obedient child to a (2) disobedient child; to a (3) strong
young lady making her own decisions. Juliet is a young girl living a sheltered life, she is a very
obedient child and bases all her decisions on the wishes of her parents. Juliet's father is making

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis

Character Analysis Of Romeo And Juliet
In everyday life individuals are constantly put in situations where they are faced with pressures from
society. In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare continuously places Juliet in situations where she
is faced with pressure from her family, friends and society. However, throughout these conflicts and
meeting Romeo, Juliet's character becomes stronger, more confident and mature, resulting in the
development of her character throughout the play. The audience is able to recognize her growth and
maturity through her innocence at the beginning, her sudden marriage to Romeo and a shift in
behaviour towards her parents and others. During Elizabethan times, it was very difficult for
women, especially young girls to voice their opinions or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, throughout the play Juliet is able to no longer seek affection from her parents, but mature
and make decisions impulsively without their approval. The Capulets and Montagues have fought
for various generations. However, their two children, Romeo and Juliet share a sincere love. After
Juliet meets Romeo for the first time she says from her balcony, "O Romeo, O Romeo... / Deny thy
father and refuse thy name; / Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I'll no longer be a
Capulet" (II.ii.33–35.). With an ongoing feud between their two families, Juliet is willing to defy her
parents and marry Romeo. This demonstrates her maturity and willingness to rebel against her
parents' wishes of marrying Paris revealing strength her character has developed. Juliet is finally
able to follow what her heart desires and make decisions that will benefit her instead of her family.
After a day of knowing one another, Juliet marries Romeo out of impulse and without the consent of
her parents. Furthermore, after Juliet's marriage to Romeo she learns quickly about love and
becomes more passionate. When marriage was first proposed to Juliet she was not flattered by the
idea "an honor that I dream not of" (I.iii.67). Despite of this, after meeting Romeo she desires it

Static Characters In Romeo And Juliet
In stories, readers often pay close attention to the protagonists and the antagonists of the story who
are often constantly changing due to natural character development. As readers, we often overlook
the stereotypical static character. Every story needs flat or static characters which create conflict
involving dynamic characters making them more important. Although this isn't exactly true in all
stories, it isn't uncommon for a novel to have a protagonist that is static. A static character, in this
vocabulary, is one that does not experience imperative change over the span of the story, remaining
basically the same toward the end as he or she was toward the start. An example of this is Romeo,
from Shakespeare's renown play Romeo and Juliet. If Romeo wasn't in the story, Juliet wouldn't
have fallen in love with Romeo. Juliet also wouldn't have died which would defeat the plot line and
whole purpose of the story. When identifying a character is static or dynamic, you have to look at
the "identity change" throughout the play. Some of Romeo's well–known character traits are his
impulsivity, immaturity, and his sensitivity which the audience see throughout the duration of the
novel which adds to the point that he is a static character. We see some immaturity and sensitivity at
the beginning of the play when Romeo is upset because Rosaline rejected his love. Even when
Benvolio and Mercutio try to help him out of his glum, he refuses to believe that there is anyone

The 13 year old Juliet Capulet is delightful and kind, however, she is also extremely childish and
impatient when it comes to most things. She is desperate to talk to Romeo after meeting him at her
family's party. This was a risky mistake since the Capulets and the Montagues are sworn enemies.
They meet during a dance, and like Romeo, she falls head over heels for him and can't wait to see
him again. After the party, Romeo tiptoes to Juliet's room and spends the night talking to her.
Promising to speak to her again, he leaves. Soon after their night together, Juliet sends out her nurse,
who is her closest confidant, to converse with Romeo. When she returns, Juliet is quick to say, "I
wish you had my bones, and I had your news. Come on now, I beg you, speak, good nurse, speak."
(page 127) This is just one of the many things she says to the nurse that shows her impatience and
acting childish throughout the play. Juliet can be impulsive as well as poetic just like Romeo. They
have many traits in common: like being a romantic, brave, and many others that is shown
throughout the play. She is kind when she tries to be respectful to her parents. And when she finds
out about her engagement to Paris She tells her parents, "I am not proud of what you have found for

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
In Shakespeare's play 'Romeo and Juliet', fate, society, and the characters can be held accountable as
villains for the tragedy. Fate permeates many events during the play and is the direct impetus for the
demise; however, factors that help in facilitating the process include the influence of society on the
characters and the independent actions of the characters themselves, which is inextricably linked to
the inevitable impact they have on the loss of Verona.
Romeo and Juliet's love driven by haste and rebellion, ending in a tragedy, is the consequence of
fate's reign over their destinies, as it was predetermined these two– from feuding families– were

Considering women at that time were expected to be subservient to men and display docility, Juliet,
and Lady Capulet are placed in extremely vulnerable positions. Obligated to obey Lord Capulet by
society and in fear of being disowned, Lady Capulet's loyalty prevents her from listening to Juliet's
plea of ' O sweet my mother, cast me not away' (III.v.198) which she callously responds with 'talk
not to me, for I'll not say a word' (III.v.203). Her mother's withdrawal from the situation and the
terror from Lord Capulet's threat that she 'hang, beg, starve, die in the streets' (III.v.193) because she
is a 'disobedient wretch' (III.v.160) engenders pressure and unruly behaviour in Juliet. During the
Elizabethan era, parent–child relationships were structured and distant, and both families were
socially pressured to continue the 'ancient grudge' (Prologue.2), hence the lovers could not express
their love to the families openly. In the end, society's constraints upon loyalty and honour to kin cost
the families the lives of their children. 232

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
In the play Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare treats the female roles as superfluous or extraneous, yet
throughout the play, he allows one female to break the stereotype for women and be just as daring
and witty as the men. In this play, Shakespeare writes that women are unsophisticated and not
capable of making their own decisions. Shakespeare made his women overly dependent on men and
wrote them to believe they physically could not live without any men in their lives. During the
progression of the play Shakespeare shows reverence towards Juliet by making her possess an inner
strength that enables her to have maturity beyond her years. Throughout Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare treats the women inadequately, but his perspective changes when it comes to Juliet and
her outstanding individualism. In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's female characters appear not
important enough to be a part of certain decisions involving their lives and have these choices made
by men. An example of this interaction happening can be found in Act 1 Scene 2, Paris asks Capulet,
"But now, my lord, what say you to my suit?"Juliet's stance is clearly subservient to her father's
social and political issues. Capulet and Paris are discussing Juliet's viable arranged marriage without
consulting anyone else, perhaps indicating they think she is too naïve to make choices about her
future. In the same scene Capulet says, "My child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not seen the
change of fourteen years, Let two more summers wither in their pride. Ere we may think her ripe to
be a bride." Paris replied to Capulet's statement by saying, "Younger than she are happy mothers
made." In the deliberation of her marriage, Juliet is fundamentally an object. Since Shakespeare had
the men make the decisions for the women, it's no surprise that the women are dangerously
dependant on men. In Act 3 Scene 5 the Nurse attempts to comfort Juliet by saying, " I think it best
you married with the county. Oh, he's a lovely gentleman.Romeo's a dishclout to him. An eagle,

about what Juliet wants. Concentration is more on Juliet's social standing than most anything else.

Romeo And Juliet Foil Characters
In Shakespeare's critically acclaimed play Romeo and Juliet, the Nurse and Lady Capulet are foil
characters. Shakespeare uses the Nurse and Lady Capulet to portray that the morals of a person, can
affect another person's actions. While Romeo and Juliet are planning their secret marriage, the Nurse
shows her easy–going and caring personality by helping Romeo sneak into Juliet's room, something
that is highly forbidden. After the Nurse is finished teasing Juliet, the Nurse becomes serious again
and tells Juliet, "Hie you to church; I must another way, to fetch a ladder, by the which your love
must climb a bird's nest soon when it is dark" (II.v.71–73). The Nurse is telling Juliet that while

Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she wishes that Juliet would be dead. Lady Capulet saying this shows
her strictness to not appreciate her daughter's' view on marriage. The Nurse uses her easy–going
personality to be laid–back with Juliet and push her to elope with Romeo, Juliet carelessly takes her
advice. However, when Juliet tells Lady Capulet, she does not approve of it, showing her strictness.
Shakespeare's progression of the foil characters, the Nurse and Lady Capulet show that other
people's morals can affect another person's actions and confuse their own thoughts. The Nurse and
Lady Capulet both have different views on love and marriage. The two different views and morals
confuse Juliet's mind and makes the tragedy all the more tragic. The Nurse risked her life to help
Juliet elope with Romeo, by doing this, she is showing that she wants Juliet to follow her heart at all
costs. The Nurse contributed to the secret marriage plan, "Then hie you hence you to Friar
Laurence's' cell; There stays a husband to make you a wife" (II.v.67–68). The Nurse is telling Juliet

and then killing themselves at the end of the play to be together. In the play the minor characters
make a lot of problems for Romeo and Juliet, making it very hard for them to be together not
actually knowing they were doing anything.
Tybalt plays a big role in the tragedy, of the death of Romeo and Juliet. In the middle of the play,

This then makes the situation more impossible and making them having to hide their marriage even

Capulets hate the Montagues but Lord Capulet also moves Juliet and Paris' wedding dates forward
and gets very loud and loses his temper and eventually end up forcing Juliet into marriage. When
Capulet says "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o'
Thursday, Or never after look me in the face" after hearing this it then caused Juliet to freak out and
take a potion to make her appear to be dead making the whole situation between Romeo and Juliet
so much worse. This then proves that the Capulets made the whole situation worse and can
somewhat be part responsible for the Tragedy.
Benvolio and Mercutio are also two characters in the play that cause a lot of problems. During the

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
While secondary characters are undersized compared to the main characters of the play, they often
have an eminent impact on the story. In William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet,
certain secondary characters influence the decisions made by the two lovers and avail to establish
the play's tragic outcome. This will be conveyed through a detailed analysis of Tybalt, Capulet and
Friar Lawrence.
Although admirable qualities add to one's life, they can often lead to their death. In Shakespeare's
play, Romeo and Juliet we are introduced to Tybalt, a fiery and prideful young relative of the
Capulet family. Tybalt plays a prominent role in both the thematic scheme and in the ultimate
outcome of the play. All three reasons go hand in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tybalt's death affects various characters, driving the tragic plot further. For Juliet, it forces her to
reconsider her love for Romeo. Her parents drive her into marriage with Paris, thinking it is her
sadness over her cousin's death that keeps her so melancholy. And the Nurse turns her back on
Romeo, seeing him only as a murderer and a disdainful man.
Tybalt is shown as a villain in Romeo and Juliet but how much can he really be blamed?
Although there are many factors to the tragedy of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, some
are greater than others. The major contributor to the downfall of these lovers was Capulet, Juliet's
own father. To begin, although Capulet wanted the best for Juliet, he didn't give a thought on how
she felt and had forced her to marry Paris which had caused problems that led to her tragic end. For
an example, Juliet did not want to marry someone who she did not love. However, Capulet ignored
her insight and protested saying, "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!/I tell thee what:
get thee to church o' Thursday,/ Or never after look me in the face." (3.5.160–162) Next, if Capulet
had never moved up the wedding, there would have been more time for the news to travel to Romeo.
Many people argue that he was doing it for, what he thought was for the better of the family and that
he was doing in unintentionally, but it is still is fault for forcing the marriage of Juliet

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
Romeo and Juliet is a well–known Shakespearian tragedy which has gripped the word's youth for
hundreds of years. When taught in schools, generally, Romeo and Juliet are made out as heroes who
act as martyrs to save their families. Because of their martyrdom, they are taught as "good guys"
fighting against an evil society which precedes them; however, they are not martyrs nor the "good
guys" of Romeo and Juliet. According to modern standards, Romeo and Juliet lacks a traditional
"good guy", because of all characters lack of perfection. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, many
characters disqualify themselves from being a "good guy", because of their lack of regard for human
life. Constant fighting results in the deaths of several characters. Mercutio and Tybalt die in the
streets of Verona after fighting. Romeo kills Tybalt after Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo's decision to
kill Tybalt shows his lack of regard for human life. The best decision is to end the carnage at one
death and not retaliate against Tybalt, yet Romeo increases the number of casualties by adding

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
In William Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo and Juliet, the actions made by multiple characters
contribute to the deaths. The inconsiderate actions had consequences which are shown through the
emotions and the deaths of multiple characters, including the two youngest characters, which leaves
the audience heartbroken and in awe. Capulet and Lady Capulet were heartbroken after their only
child, Juliet, lost her life due to their lack of support. The young gentleman, Paris, also lost his life
and contributed to the deaths of others as a result of his unlawful greed. The two main characters,
Romeo and Juliet, also were components to not only their own deaths but the deaths of other
characters as well. In short, multiple characters actions and emotions determined the fate of others
and their own lives. Juliet's parents, the Capulets, do not support Juliet thus them being a factor in
the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The two enemy families, the Capulets and the Montagues have an
ancient feud. Meaning the Capulets do not accept Romeo and Juliet's relationship as Romeo is from
the rival family. After the death of Tybalt, Lady Capulet wanted Romeo dead, Romeo was punished
by being banished because of his crime whilst Lady Capulet encouraged the feud. "We will have
vengeance for it, fear thou not. / Then weep no more, I'll send to one in Mantua, / where that same
banished runagate doth live, / Shall give him such an unaccustomed dram / That we shall soon keep
Tybalt company. / And

Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis
"The story of two heart–felt lovers that end in tragedy". Romeo and Juliet are two love birds who
fell in love with each other. The two families were feuding and they would not let Romeo and Juliet
be together. Juliet's family tried to keep her away from Romeo but as teenagers, they would find a
way to be together, even if it meant sneaking out! I honestly think it is very sad. You can not, again I
say "CAN NOT", keep love away from each other. it is like keeping a mother and her daughter away
from each other, it is not right! At the end of Romeo and Juliet, they both die because of the
families. The Montagues and the Capulets are on opposite sides in a blood feud and are trying to kill
each other on the streets of Verona. When Romeo is banished, Juliet tries to avoid being married to
someone else by drinking a potion that kills her. If the family would of just let them be together,
they would of lived a they would not of died. After Romeo and Juliet died, the families ended the
feud. What is so striking, about this play, is that despite its extraordinary setting, it has been the
quintessential (important) story of young love. Shakespear spent his professional life in London and
returned to Stratford a wealthy landowner. After two years in a petty school, students entered the
lower grade of the grammar school, where they began the serious study of Latin Grammar and Latin
Texts that would occupy most of the remainder of their school days. Since the records of the

  • 1. Minor Character In Romeo And Juliet Minor characters are always overlooked and thought of as unimportant, but they can make important contributions. The Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona. The minor character that will be focused on in this essay is the nurse that has raised Juliet since birth. The nurse is a mother figure to Juliet and is her main confidant. The nurse makes several important contributions in the play by helping Juliet with her affairs with Romeo, as well as offering Juliet information, comfort, and advice. One of the most influential contributions to the plot of the play that the nurse helped with was when she helped Romeo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Character Analysis Of Romeo And Juliet The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a captivating romantic comedy about two young lovers living in Verona Italy during the 1300s.romeo belongs to the Montague house who are in a constant feud with the Capulets, Juliet's family .it is because of this the two lovers must conceal their growing relationship even going so far as to be married in secret despite the fact that Juliet's parents, lord and lady Capulet are in the midst of arranging for her to be married to the wealthy count Paris ,a man who is more than twice her age and who Juliet has no interest in. both Romeo and Juliet's shared and separate character traits strongly contribute to the tragic ending of the play and lives of Romeo and Juliet. One shared character trait of both Romeo and Juliet is that they both feel that their lives are valueless if they cannot have what they desire. For example when Romeo is complaining to Benvolio about Rosalie he says "she's sworn off love and that promise has left me alive but dead."(Shakespeare 25) by saying this Romeo is implying that it's as if he's dead if he can't have what he wants. Juliet doses the same thing the night she meets Romeo after the party she tells her nurse "if he's married I think I'll die rather than marry anyone else."(Shakespeare 71).suicide was something that both Romeo and Juliet threatened as a way of getting what they wanted. An example of this is when Juliet is asking Friar Lawrence for help getting out of her engagement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's beautifully written tragedies portraying love, hate, and destiny all in the town of Verona. During the play Shakespeare introduces a complex character, Juliet, a thirteen year old girl, daughter of a wealthy family, the Capulets. When two teenagers cross paths, will their love conquer all? Or will conflict get in their way? In this essay, I will argue that Juliet is an admirable character because of her ability to evolve into a mature young lady all in a period of five days. Juliet is Shakespeare's most powerful character portraying the epitome of a woman with great strength amidst adversity. Shakespeare helps me to admire Juliet by showing how much her character develops from a naive adolescent who matures to an independent young lady throughout the course of the play. When we first encounter Juliet, we get the impression that she is an innocent girl who is dependent on her family. In Act 1 Scene 3 Lady Capulet asks Juliet on her thoughts on marriage, as to which she replies with "It is an honor, that I dream not of". This suggests that Juliet has never considered marriage before and is quite ignorant on the topic of love. Everything changes the moment she meets Romeo Montague and falls in love with him and she develops into a young woman capable of making her own choices. Shakespeare shows Juliet's maturity when we look at her reaction to Romeo being a Montague. "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Juliet is not unlike the typical young women constantly struggling to find happiness and acceptance from those who are closest to her. Young Juliet must confront the harsh reality that exists between her and those who profess to be her friends and family, which is they failed to support her, love her, and lift her up with she needed it most. In the timeless book, "Romeo & Juliet" William Shakespeare writes a moving story about the betrayal, disappointment, love, and eventual death of Romeo and Juliet. No reader can truly appreciate and understand the level of Juliet's struggles without first understanding the roles the Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence and Romeo, their betrayal and their role in her faithful decision. Some may say Capulet wouldn't have been the only one to protest Romeo and Juliet's marriage, but he had the final say in Juliet's life. Lord Capulet, "Send for the county.; Go tell him of this. I'll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning."(IV. ii. 21–22) If Lord Capulet never moved up the wedding, there would have been more time for the news to travel to Romeo. Many people argue that he was doing it for right reasons, that his decision was for the better of the family and he did it unintentionally, but it was still his fault for forcing this marriage so suddenly on Juliet. It is Lord Capulets fault because he is too protective over Juliet. Some people may say Juliet could have just stood up to her father and tell him straight forward how she wanted to marry Romeo and not Paris, however, he was just so overbearing and possessive, she was too nervous to come forward and say it. Lord Capulet. "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee to a church Thursday or never after look at me in the face." (III. v. 180–183) By Lord Capulet being so strict with Juliet, moving up the wedding, and being too protective, Juliet was forced to make up an incredibly dangerous plan, leading to the young couple committing suicide. Friar Lawrence makes not only one, but three mistakes that all lead up to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. He gave a poison to Juliet, he trusted someone else with a letter of great importance to deliver to Romeo, and he fled at Juliet's tomb instead of trying to help her. ... • 9. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Supported Opinion Paragraph #2 William Shakespeare, the well known playwright and poet, likes to add unique attributes into every major character of his plays such as, possibly, the most known play, Romeo and Juliet. One character that has shown rash, impetuous and impulsive behaviour in the play Romeo and Juliet, is Romeo Montague. Throughout the entire play, Romeo, makes rash decisions that cause significant consequences. These consequences affect many characters and some consequences result in death. Rash and impetuous characters can change the plot of the play and the final outcome of it. An early example of Romeo, acting impetuous is when he goes to Capulet's orchard to meet Juliet. This shows his rash thinking because Romeo, acknowledges the consequences of him being found in Capulet territory, which is death. Romeo states this in the following quote; " I have night's cloak to hide me from their eyes/And but thou love me, let them find me here/My life were better ended by their hate/Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love" (II, ii, 75–78). This quote shows Romeo, willing to risk his life, ignoring the potential consequences, showing his stubborn behaviour. Romeo also shows his rash behaviour in the orchard when he and Juliet, impulsively decide they should marry each other the next day, proven in this quote; "We met, we woo'd, and made exchange of vow/ I'll tell thee as we pass; but this I pray/ That thou consent to marry us to–day" (II, iii, 62–64). This shows his rash behaviour since he knows that he is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet and they are family enemies, but wants Friar Laurence to marry them today (Monday in the book) even though he just saw her for the first time yesterday. Because of this decision, dramatic irony stirs since the Capulets and the Montagues are unaware of this, other than the Nurse and Friar Laurence. Another time when Romeo acted impulsively in the play was when Romeo slays Tybalt, who is Lady Capulet's nephew. He displays the reasoning behind his anger in this quote; " Alive in triumph! And Mercutio slain!/ Away to heaven, respective lenity/ And fire–eyed fury be my conduct now!" (III, i, 121–123). Romeo acts impulsively in this part of the play because he let his ... • 11. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis What role does love take on in one's life? What changes can it bring to a person and how does it affect the way they interact with others? What happens when infatuation is mistaken for love, and the mindless consequences of the impulsive behaviour affect not just the one who is in the situation, but everyone who surrounds them? What damage does it bring? The Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet revolves around the same thought, as to what happens when love overtake one's ability to think and react to situations that comes to life or death, and how the decisions of it, unintentionally causes pain to others. The author demonstrates the consequences of loving through the, when pain and suffer causes them to end their lives to be with each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The night after the party, Juliet talks to herself and agrees to "... no longer be a Capulet" (II, ii, 36) to show that their love is real. They decide to marry each other to spend as much time as possible with each other. He asks Friar Lawrence, the priest, to wed them, but their eagerness to rush into a marriage surprises the priest. Just before the marriage, he says "These violent delights have violent ends,/And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,/Which as they kiss consume (II, vi, 9–11). Because of love, Romeo first isolates himself from the world and thinks that he is not going to fall in love again, or find anyone like Rosaline. Then when he meets Juliet, he rushes the marriage with her; he cannot think properly because he thinks he is in "love". Apart from that, Love can have a negative impact in someone's life when one tries to protect love as to what happens in this play. Love destroys trust between Juliet and her father, Capulet, when she tries to protect her love life; madness and hate takes over and destroys the relationship she has with her father. He finds out that his daughter does not want to fulfill his dreams when she refuses to marry Paris. Because he does not know that she is married to Romeo, he gets upset and angry at her, then furiously calls her a "disobedient wretch" (III, iii, 166), his love for her disappears. • 13. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Have you ever felt true love? Sometimes it does not always work out in that relationship. Maybe outside factors affected how a relationship turned out in the end. In the tragedy, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, both characters Romeo and Juliet died and had a bumpy relationship mainly due to outside factors. Romeo and Juliet had many outside factors affect their relationship. Characters such as Friar Laurence, Tybalt, themselves, or even fate. During the story, Tybalt and Romeo never saw eye to eye which resulted in Tybalt's personality to possibly lead to a chain of events. This quote means that Friar Laurence agreed to Romeo's proposal of marrying a girl he has barely met and one that is from his rival family. An example that also supports the fault on Friar Laurence is lying to Capulet about Juliet being dead when in actuality she was alive yet in a coma sourced from his potion. An additional example could also be his devised plans such as the moment he created the plan to get Romeo to open a coffin that Juliet would be in once she awoke from her coma to be reunited together once more, which seems extremely suspicious and this mess could have been prevented in the first place if he remained smart over his actions. Overall, Friar Laurence could have prevented their deaths if only he was heedful with his actions. Because both Romeo and Juliet were head over heels for each other they are also a possibility for the fault of their death. An example could be when Romeo fell in love with Juliet in the first place which caused all the events of the story to occur. Another could be when Juliet was suicidal, "JULIET: And ere this hand, by thee to Romeo's sealed, shall be the label to another deed, or my true heart with treacherous revolt turn to another, this shall slay them both. • 15. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Many plays and other types of literary works use dramatic foil to portray the different extremes of emotional and personality spectrums through characters. In the play, "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare used many of his characters to portray dramatic foil in his scenes. While Shakespeare did use dramatic foil, he used more than one type, he used his characters to create dramatic foils that would draw in the audience and develop the characters being used by having the two extremes make each other stand out. As Shakespeare starts the play two of his characters immediately created a dramatic foil when they caught sight of each other and they continued to do so every time after. Benvolio and Tybalt are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the play went on Shakespeare demonstrated another dramatic foil for the audience to witness. The dramatic foil was forged from the extremes of Nurse's love for Juliet and Lady Capulet's distance from Juliet. "This is the matter.–Nurse, give leave awhile;/ We must talk in secret. Nurse, come back again./ I have rememb'red me; thou's hear our counsel./ Thou know'st my daughter's of a pretty age" (1.3.7–11). The quote provided was able to allow the audience to view the dramatic foil first hand since there was an immense contrast of the relationships between Lady Capulet and Juliet; and Nurse and Juliet which depicts just how different the two adults were in Juliet's life. Lady Capulet had a base relationship with her daughter and she realized it would not permit for her to have a beneficial conversation with Juliet, so she called back Nurse who had a paternalistic connection with her daughter. The dramatic foil between the two adults emphasizes the love of Nurse and the withdrawal of Lady Capulet. "God in heaven bless her!/ You are to blame, my lord, to rate her so" (3.5.169–170). Nurse is the one who says the quote and in the quote she defended Juliet from Lord Capulet which further emphasized her paternalistic connection. This further exemplified how much Nurse cared for Juliet since she went against Lord Capulet; whereas, Lady Capulet only told Lord Capulet a few words, because she wanted him to calm down. • 17. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Many of Romeo and Juliet's plot points are driven through brash decisions made by the character Tybalt, and his audible hatred of the Montague family. Tybalt is the young hot–heated individual who will jump at any chance to destroy the Montague family and their heir. From the first time Tybalt sees the main protagonist in the story he jumps at the opportunity to slay him and by just hearing his voice asks his servant to "fetch me my rapier boy"(1.5.52) in order to purge the Montague from the party. He shall "strike him dead" as he "hold it not a sin"(1.5.57) and by accordance the murder would not be a sin in the eyes of his family. Tybalt without any thinking instantly had made his decision that it would be alright to kill a man who had simply been enjoying a party. And without any thought he had begun to plan for a murder that would jeopardize him despite Prince earlier having stated that "If ever you disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace"(1.1.89–91). Tybalt had repeatedly acted on these violent tendencies which had later into the story costed him his life as he had gone after Romeo without any thought besides the emotional hatred and distaste he feels towards Romeo. In the street in the middle of the day Tybalt had "under Romeo's arm, thrusts Mercutio in"(3.1.83). • 19. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis One of William Shakespeare's most famous works is the story of "Romeo and Juliet." The play is a romantic tragedy where several characters die within a few days. The play starts by introducing one of the main characters, Romeo and later on in the story, Juliet is introduced. Romeo meets Juliet at a party and they instantly fall in love. Juliet soon proposes marriage, they get married, but soon they both die. There are several characters that could be to blame for the tragic death of these two teenagers, but the three most blamable characters are Friar Lawrence, Fate, and Lord Capulet. The most blamable character for the death of Romeo and Juliet is Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence made on mistake which set off a chain reaction of other events that resulted in Romeo and Juliet's death. In Act IV Scene i, Friar Lawrence said, "Ah Juliet, I already know thy grief, it strains me past the compass of my wits, I hear thou must, and nothing may prorogue it, on Thursday next to be married to this county," (DBQ:Project, 2013) and "if thou darest, I will give thee remedy." (DBQ:Project, 2013) The first quote explains Friar Lawrence's sympathy for Juliet having to marry Paris. Friar Lawrence knows that Juliet is in love with Romeo, but she is being forced by her parents to marry Paris. The second quote from Friar Lawrence shows a solution to Juliet's problem. Friar Lawrence's "remedy" is to give Juliet a potion which would put her to sleep for a few days. The effects of the potion would make Juliet appear to be dead, so Friar Lawrence would then send letters to Romeo saying Juliet is not actually dead, and Romeo needs to come rescue her and then the two lovers could live a happy life. While this plan was well thought out, it was not executed very well. The letters never made their way to Romeo, so Romeo assumed Juliet was dead and he then committed suicide. When Juliet woke up and saw Romeo was dead, she also committed suicide. Friar Lawrence is the most blamable character for Romeo and Juliet's death because he was the one who gave Juliet the potion in the first place. If Juliet would have never received the potion, Romeo would not have committed suicide, so neither would have Juliet. While Friar Lawrence is the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Secondary Characters in Romeo and Juliet While secondary characters are less important than the main characters of the book, they often have a noteworthy impact on the story. In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a secondary character, Friar Lawrence, plays a vital role throughout the play. The play takes place in Verona and focuses on Romeo and Juliet, two star–crossed lovers from two feuding families; the Montagues and the Capulets. The extremely violent feud between these families has been ongoing for generations, extending out to even the serving men of both houses. Romeo and Juliet must profess their love in secret because of the quarrel between their parents. This is a catalyst in triggering tragic events, consisting of the deaths of many other characters, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To prevent Juliet's suicide, the Friar comes up with a plan. He says to Juliet, "take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilling liquor drink thou off."(IV.i.95–96) Friar Lawrence wants Juliet to fake her own death and lie in the tomb of Capulet, to get out of marrying Paris. However, this plan backfires when Romeo does not receive the letter that the Friar had sent him and he kills himself over Juliet's 'death', and Juliet in response kills herself over his death. The Friar's exertion contributes to the plot, because the tragedy at the end of the play would not have occurred without his actions. Friar Lawrence reveals major qualities about Romeo, including his obsessive and foolish behavior. Friar Lawrence begins chastising Romeo for being over Rosaline, a woman that did not return Romeo's love, and then falling for Juliet so quickly. Romeo then remarks that the Friar had usually scolded him for loving Rosaline, to which the Friar replies, "for doting, not love, pupil mine"(II.iii.87). Friar Lawrence is admonishing Romeo for his immature infatuation with Rosaline. By doing this, it is clear that Romeo was obsessive over his love for Rosaline. After killing Tybalt, the Prince declares Romeo's banishment and Romeo goes crying to the Friar claiming that death would be a better punishment than banishment. • 25. Minor Characters In Romeo And Juliet In the traumatic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the tragic result is and is not the responsibility of the minor characters. The minor characters are certainly not responsible because Romeo and Juliet killed themselves with their own free will, and none of the minor characters were involved in this wistful event. As well as this, fate also had a significant role in guiding their relationship to not work out as it caused many events to inevitably happen. However, I believe that Friar Lawrence is accountable for part of the tragedy, as he did not do his best or go out of his way, to ensure that his plan for Romeo and Juliet would work out. Firstly, Romeo and Juliet ended their lives with their own free will, and no one encouraged or guided them to do so. An example is when Juliet was asleep in the tomb and Romeo assumed she had died. Romeo quotes, "Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, and death's pale flag is not advancèd there." This hence shows that Romeo had an instinct that Juliet was not dead and he thoroughly noticed all the signs of a living and healthy person; however did not look deeper or infer profoundly. At this point, Romeo drunk the poison because he concluded that his life was not worth living unless Juliet was in it. This shows how Romeo ended his life himself without the influence of any minor characters. Another example is when Juliet stabs herself with the dagger. Juliet quotes, "Yea, noise, then I'll be brief; O, happy dagger! This is thy sheath; three rest, and let me die." This also shows that Juliet killed herself with no encouragement from minor characters and stabbed herself with her own doing. Juliet was too in love with the idea of love, as she also thought she did not have a purpose without Romeo. Juliet had so much more to live for and none of the minor characters expressed to Juliet, that Romeo was all she had. These two examples intensively confirm how it was undoubtedly, not the minor characters fault and it conveys how they are not responsible for the disastrous and devastating deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Moreover, fate had a notable significance in regarding the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Fate led on many events that were destined to happen, with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis A foil is a character that is used to enhance the characteristics of another character (most likely the story's protagonist) by a clear contrast between the two characters. To help bring the characters in Romeo and Juliet to life, William Shakespeare creates foils to compare his main characters to and show why they are better or a better couple in the case of Romeo and Juliet. While some of the foil characters are obvious, like in the case of Romeo and Paris, or Juliet and Rosaline, in other cases it's harder to see the contrast and the significance, as in the case of Romeo and Mercutio. The role of the foil characters in Romeo and Juliet is also to show what could have happened if the protagonists had made different choices. Throughout Romeo and Juliet it is made clear that Romeo and Paris are foils as the both are in love Juliet and wish to marry her. However this often leads people to forgetting about Mercutio and his clear contrast with Romeo. We see their differing opinions clearly in Act 1, Scene 4, in which Mercutio tries to persuade Romeo to join them in crashing the Capulet's' feast. Romeo takes love very seriously, pining and yearning for Rosaline, while Mercutio treats love as a joke and something to be wary of. When Romeo says he cannot join them because he feels too heavy–hearted, Mercutio tells Romeo to "borrow Cupid's wings, And soar with them above a common bound" (1.4.18–19) Furthermore, when Romeo argues that love is "rough," "rude," "boist'rous," and ... • 29. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Romeo and Juliet a Tragedy of Fate and Character There is no doubt that Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy of young love. What is in doubt is what contributes to the tragedy. The story of Romeo and Juliet's love contrasts greatly with famous Greek tragedies such as Oedipus the King and The Odyssey in which the source of tragedy is the main protagonists struggle against fate. Rather the source of tragedy in Romeo and Juliet is both the character flaws that exist within in Romeo and Juliet themselves and their fate. Romeo and Julie's fate was to be born into feuding families and to be involved in a series of unlikely coincidences. Rome and Juliet both share character flaws or hamartia, which include impetuousness, impulsiveness, and impatience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was only by coincidence that an illiterate Capulet servant was sent on a mission to deliver the ball invitations and happens unto Romeo and his cousin Benvolio. The servant who cannot read the names of the invited guests and therefore does not who to deliver the invitations to asks Romeo to read the invitation for him so he can continue his deliveries. As Romeo reads the invitation to the servant he discovers that his former lover Rosaline is an invited guest. After reading the names the servant explains that the ball is open to almost everyone who is not a Montague. Benvolio then convinces Romeo to attend the Capulet ball, setting into motion the entire tragedy (Smith, 1948). In the play Romeo and Juliet fate conspires against the two young lovers by making them unfortunate in their selection of friends and acquaintances. Romeo and Juliet's friends, family and acquaintances are simply unable or unwilling to understand the love that they possess for each other. Juliet's acquaintance the Nurse has no concept of love beyond its sensuality; to her love might as well be lust. To Juliet's own mother love and marriage are only social traditions telling Juliet "Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn/ The gallant, young, and noble gentleman" (Romeo and Juliet 3.5. 117–118) making no mention of love whatsoever. • 35. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Love is worth dying for. A statement that has many opinions surrounding whether it is true or not. William Shakespeare explores this statement, as he writes his most famous play, Romeo and Juliet. The play is set in the town of Verona in France, where two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, struggle to keep peace, as the feud of many generations still splits the town in half. Through their family feuds, the two young lovers, the Montague Romeo and the Capulet Juliet, try to have a relationships. However, many events eventually lead them to the downfall of both characters. However, Shakespeare uses hamartia to express the other character within Romeo, one that is furious, violent and narrow minded. Romeo's friend, Mercutio, got into a fight with the Capulet Tybalt, causing swords and words to fly between the two. Romeo tries to stop the two, but Tybalt runs away. This is not after he has stabbed Mercutio though, causing Romeo to get very upset. He lets his anger control his actions, ignoring everything else. "Now, Tybalt, take the 'villain' back again" (Shakespeare Act III scene i 20) Romeo exclaims as he begins to fight Tybalt, eventually killing him. For the first time, the audience may feel scared of Romeo, as he can be seen as a mad man. So, when Romeo gets exiled, the audience may troubled whether to feel empathetic or glad. Romeo shouldn't be exiled because he didn't start the fight, and his newly wed wife, Juliet, won't be able to see him. Romeo should be exiled because he is a murderer, dangerous for the city. Romeo only killed Tybalt because he killed Mercutio, he was going to die anyway. All of these opinions arise in one's mind, showing clearly the moral ambiguity found within Romeo's character. Ultimately Friar Lawrence is very much to blame for his naiveness and believing everything would go his way. Another important person that lead to Romeo and Juliet's demise was Romeo because of his impulsiveness when making important decisions. Romeo's first impulsive decision was to rush into his relationship with Juliet. This is proven when Friar Lawrence says "Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here!/ Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear,/ So soon forsaken? Young men's love then lies/ Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes". (2.3. 65–68). Friar Lawrence is saying that just days ago he was in love with Rosaline and now he is in love with Juliet. This helped build up to the final tragedy because of their secret marriage and how Juliet could not marry Paris. Another reason Romeo is to blame because he kills Tybalt out of rage. Romeo screams at Tybalt "Alive in triumph– and Mercutio slain!/ Away to heaven, respective lenity,/ And fire–eyed fury be my conduct now". (3.1. 84–86). • 49. • 53. Static Characters In Romeo And Juliet In stories, readers often pay close attention to the protagonists and the antagonists of the story who are often constantly changing due to natural character development. As readers, we often overlook the stereotypical static character. Every story needs flat or static characters which create conflict involving dynamic characters making them more important. Although this isn't exactly true in all stories, it isn't uncommon for a novel to have a protagonist that is static. A static character, in this vocabulary, is one that does not experience imperative change over the span of the story, remaining basically the same toward the end as he or she was toward the start. An example of this is Romeo, from Shakespeare's renown play Romeo and Juliet. If Romeo wasn't in the story, Juliet wouldn't have fallen in love with Romeo. Juliet also wouldn't have died which would defeat the plot line and whole purpose of the story. When identifying a character is static or dynamic, you have to look at the "identity change" throughout the play. Some of Romeo's well–known character traits are his impulsivity, immaturity, and his sensitivity which the audience see throughout the duration of the novel which adds to the point that he is a static character. We see some immaturity and sensitivity at the beginning of the play when Romeo is upset because Rosaline rejected his love. She is desperate to talk to Romeo after meeting him at her family's party. This was a risky mistake since the Capulets and the Montagues are sworn enemies. They meet during a dance, and like Romeo, she falls head over heels for him and can't wait to see him again. After the party, Romeo tiptoes to Juliet's room and spends the night talking to her. Promising to speak to her again, he leaves. Soon after their night together, Juliet sends out her nurse, who is her closest confidant, to converse with Romeo. When she returns, Juliet is quick to say, "I wish you had my bones, and I had your news. Come on now, I beg you, speak, good nurse, speak." Fate permeates many events during the play and is the direct impetus for the demise; however, factors that help in facilitating the process include the influence of society on the characters and the independent actions of the characters themselves, which is inextricably linked to the inevitable impact they have on the loss of Verona. Romeo and Juliet's love driven by haste and rebellion, ending in a tragedy, is the consequence of fate's reign over their destinies, as it was predetermined these two– from feuding families– were bound to meet and fall in love. The power of fate is validated in the opening lines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considering women at that time were expected to be subservient to men and display docility, Juliet, and Lady Capulet are placed in extremely vulnerable positions. Obligated to obey Lord Capulet by society and in fear of being disowned, Lady Capulet's loyalty prevents her from listening to Juliet's plea of ' O sweet my mother, cast me not away' (III.v.198) which she callously responds with 'talk not to me, for I'll not say a word' (III.v.203). Her mother's withdrawal from the situation and the terror from Lord Capulet's threat that she 'hang, beg, starve, die in the streets' (III.v.193) because she is a 'disobedient wretch' (III.v.160) engenders pressure and unruly behaviour in Juliet. During the Elizabethan era, parent–child relationships were structured and distant, and both families were socially pressured to continue the 'ancient grudge' (Prologue.2), hence the lovers could not express their love to the families openly. In the end, society's constraints upon loyalty and honour to kin cost the families the lives of their children. 232 The individual, ill–conceived actions of the Friar and Nurse play a pivotal role in the mishap, and ultimately, the characters can be discerned as villains. Both children are a subject to lack of parental love and guidance; therefore, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis In the play Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare treats the female roles as superfluous or extraneous, yet throughout the play, he allows one female to break the stereotype for women and be just as daring and witty as the men. In this play, Shakespeare writes that women are unsophisticated and not capable of making their own decisions. Shakespeare made his women overly dependent on men and wrote them to believe they physically could not live without any men in their lives. During the progression of the play Shakespeare shows reverence towards Juliet by making her possess an inner strength that enables her to have maturity beyond her years. Throughout Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare treats the women inadequately, but his perspective changes when it comes to Juliet and her outstanding individualism. In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's female characters appear not important enough to be a part of certain decisions involving their lives and have these choices made by men. An example of this interaction happening can be found in Act 1 Scene 2, Paris asks Capulet, "But now, my lord, what say you to my suit?"Juliet's stance is clearly subservient to her father's social and political issues. Capulet and Paris are discussing Juliet's viable arranged marriage without consulting anyone else, perhaps indicating they think she is too naïve to make choices about her future. In the same scene Capulet says, "My child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not seen the change of fourteen years, Let two more summers wither in their pride. Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride." Paris replied to Capulet's statement by saying, "Younger than she are happy mothers made." In the deliberation of her marriage, Juliet is fundamentally an object. Since Shakespeare had the men make the decisions for the women, it's no surprise that the women are dangerously dependant on men. In Act 3 Scene 5 the Nurse attempts to comfort Juliet by saying, " I think it best you married with the county. Oh, he's a lovely gentleman.Romeo's a dishclout to him. An eagle, madam, Hath not so green, so quick, so fair an eye As Paris hath. Beshrew my very heart, I think you are happy in this second match, For it excels your first. • 63. Silent Characters In Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet includes several silent characters that contribute to the overall play. Lady Capulet is not the silent character that she has generally referred to being. Juliet's beauty causes Romeo to fall for her; of course, being the birth mother of Juliet means that Lady Capulet also indirectly causes her own child's death. As the birth mother of Juliet, Lady Capulet doesn't genuinely care about what Juliet wants. Concentration is more on Juliet's social standing than most anything else. When confronted Lady Capulet quickly asserts, "Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn/ the gallant, young, and noble gentleman,/ the County Paris, at Saint Peter's Church/ shall happily make thee there a joyful bride" without even asking Juliet's ... • 65. Romeo And Juliet Foil Characters In Shakespeare's critically acclaimed play Romeo and Juliet, the Nurse and Lady Capulet are foil characters. Shakespeare uses the Nurse and Lady Capulet to portray that the morals of a person, can affect another person's actions. While Romeo and Juliet are planning their secret marriage, the Nurse shows her easy–going and caring personality by helping Romeo sneak into Juliet's room, something that is highly forbidden. After the Nurse is finished teasing Juliet, the Nurse becomes serious again and tells Juliet, "Hie you to church; I must another way, to fetch a ladder, by the which your love must climb a bird's nest soon when it is dark" (II.v.71–73). The Nurse is telling Juliet that while Romeo and Juliet are getting married in the church, she will find a ladder, with that ladder, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she wishes that Juliet would be dead. Lady Capulet saying this shows her strictness to not appreciate her daughter's' view on marriage. The Nurse uses her easy–going personality to be laid–back with Juliet and push her to elope with Romeo, Juliet carelessly takes her advice. However, when Juliet tells Lady Capulet, she does not approve of it, showing her strictness. Shakespeare's progression of the foil characters, the Nurse and Lady Capulet show that other people's morals can affect another person's actions and confuse their own thoughts. The Nurse and Lady Capulet both have different views on love and marriage. The two different views and morals confuse Juliet's mind and makes the tragedy all the more tragic. The Nurse risked her life to help Juliet elope with Romeo, by doing this, she is showing that she wants Juliet to follow her heart at all costs. The Nurse contributed to the secret marriage plan, "Then hie you hence you to Friar Laurence's' cell; There stays a husband to make you a wife" (II.v.67–68). When Capulet says "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! • 69. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis While secondary characters are undersized compared to the main characters of the play, they often have an eminent impact on the story. In William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet, certain secondary characters influence the decisions made by the two lovers and avail to establish the play's tragic outcome. This will be conveyed through a detailed analysis of Tybalt, Capulet and Friar Lawrence. Although admirable qualities add to one's life, they can often lead to their death. In Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet we are introduced to Tybalt, a fiery and prideful young relative of the Capulet family. Tybalt plays a prominent role in both the thematic scheme and in the ultimate outcome of the play. All three reasons go hand in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tybalt's death affects various characters, driving the tragic plot further. For Juliet, it forces her to reconsider her love for Romeo. Her parents drive her into marriage with Paris, thinking it is her sadness over her cousin's death that keeps her so melancholy. And the Nurse turns her back on Romeo, seeing him only as a murderer and a disdainful man. Tybalt is shown as a villain in Romeo and Juliet but how much can he really be blamed? Although there are many factors to the tragedy of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, some are greater than others. The major contributor to the downfall of these lovers was Capulet, Juliet's own father. To begin, although Capulet wanted the best for Juliet, he didn't give a thought on how she felt and had forced her to marry Paris which had caused problems that led to her tragic end. For an example, Juliet did not want to marry someone who she did not love. However, Capulet ignored her insight and protested saying, "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!/I tell thee what: get thee to church o' Thursday,/ Or never after look me in the face." (3.5.160–162) Next, if Capulet had never moved up the wedding, there would have been more time for the news to travel to Romeo. Many people argue that he was doing it for, what he thought was for the better of the family and that he was doing in unintentionally, but it is still is fault for forcing the marriage of Juliet ... • 71. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis Romeo and Juliet is a well–known Shakespearian tragedy which has gripped the word's youth for hundreds of years. When taught in schools, generally, Romeo and Juliet are made out as heroes who act as martyrs to save their families. Because of their martyrdom, they are taught as "good guys" fighting against an evil society which precedes them; however, they are not martyrs nor the "good guys" of Romeo and Juliet. According to modern standards, Romeo and Juliet lacks a traditional "good guy", because of all characters lack of perfection. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, many characters disqualify themselves from being a "good guy", because of their lack of regard for human life. Constant fighting results in the deaths of several characters. Mercutio and Tybalt die in the streets of Verona after fighting. Romeo kills Tybalt after Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo's decision to kill Tybalt shows his lack of regard for human life. The best decision is to end the carnage at one death and not retaliate against Tybalt, yet Romeo increases the number of casualties by adding Tybalt to the fallen. A "good guy" would never take a life unless necessary; therefore, Romeo can not be classified as a "good guy". Romeo is not the only character who lacks care for human life. Friar Lawrence suspects that Romeo and Juliet's marriage will end in their deaths, he foreshadows their deaths in his garden. Yet, he still agrees to marry the "star–crossed lovers" in secret; a traditional "good guy" would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis In William Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo and Juliet, the actions made by multiple characters contribute to the deaths. The inconsiderate actions had consequences which are shown through the emotions and the deaths of multiple characters, including the two youngest characters, which leaves the audience heartbroken and in awe. Capulet and Lady Capulet were heartbroken after their only child, Juliet, lost her life due to their lack of support. The young gentleman, Paris, also lost his life and contributed to the deaths of others as a result of his unlawful greed. The two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, also were components to not only their own deaths but the deaths of other characters as well. In short, multiple characters actions and emotions determined the fate of others and their own lives. Juliet's parents, the Capulets, do not support Juliet thus them being a factor in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The two enemy families, the Capulets and the Montagues have an ancient feud. Meaning the Capulets do not accept Romeo and Juliet's relationship as Romeo is from the rival family. After the death of Tybalt, Lady Capulet wanted Romeo dead, Romeo was punished by being banished because of his crime whilst Lady Capulet encouraged the feud. "We will have vengeance for it, fear thou not. / Then weep no more, I'll send to one in Mantua, / where that same banished runagate doth live, / Shall give him such an unaccustomed dram / That we shall soon keep Tybalt company. / And ... • 75. Romeo And Juliet Character Analysis "The story of two heart–felt lovers that end in tragedy". Romeo and Juliet are two love birds who fell in love with each other. The two families were feuding and they would not let Romeo and Juliet be together. Juliet's family tried to keep her away from Romeo but as teenagers, they would find a way to be together, even if it meant sneaking out! I honestly think it is very sad. You can not, again I say "CAN NOT", keep love away from each other. it is like keeping a mother and her daughter away from each other, it is not right! At the end of Romeo and Juliet, they both die because of the families. The Montagues and the Capulets are on opposite sides in a blood feud and are trying to kill each other on the streets of Verona. When Romeo is banished, Juliet tries to avoid being married to someone else by drinking a potion that kills her. If the family would of just let them be together, they would of lived a they would not of died. After Romeo and Juliet died, the families ended the feud. What is so striking, about this play, is that despite its extraordinary setting, it has been the quintessential (important) story of young love. Shakespear spent his professional life in London and returned to Stratford a wealthy landowner. After two years in a petty school, students entered the lower grade of the grammar school, where they began the serious study of Latin Grammar and Latin Texts that would occupy most of the remainder of their school days.
