Spanish interest of the Americas. He showed the Crown what the Americas have.
Christopher Columbus was the one to land in the Americas first for the Spanish Empire, but not the
first Spaniard to land and set up Spain's grip on the Northern Americas, especially in California.
That belonged to Hernan Cortés. Cortés's voyage was first funded by a third party, Diego Velázquez.
The voyage before the its original sail out date was canceled by Diego Velázquez and Cortés's
voyage was lost. Cortés got word of this and sailed out the night before the original sail date before
anything could happen to it and him in 1519.45 He wanted his chance to explore the world and to
look for the legendary Strait of Anián. The Strait of Anián was this pathway from the Americas to
the Far East in Asia that no explorer has found.6 Cortés landed in the middle of the Americas and
found out about the Aztec Empire that was ruled by Montezuma after he set up a fishing village
called Pontonchan. Cortés first went to Tenochitlán, the "City of Dreams", and was shocked to see
the advancement that the Aztecs had.78 He also found out about what the Aztecs do in their free
time. The Aztecs were violent to their neighbors, they were cannibals, and the Aztecs performed
human sacrifices.9 This was a good motive for Cortés to conquer the Aztec empire. Cortés wanted
to push more North as well, but could not get far.

The Gold Rush was a period of time that totally transformed the United States. The Gold Rush
expanded America and added new and improved culture into the country. People came from far and
wide to search for gold and hunt for newfound money. So much gold was found it gave a lot of
people that did not have money hope. It gave considerable positives like temporary economic
stability and the ultimate expansion of America. Even though the Gold Rush encouraged some
economic stability, it was ultimately harmful because it caused economic recession, it kept the

The opening chapters of Louise Pubols's well–written and carefully documented study of the de la
Guerra family of Santa Bárbara, California, clearly demonstrate why she chose to title her book The
Father of All. Spanish–born military officer José de la Guerra is the central figure in this history, and
members of his large family play important supporting roles.
He arrived in Alta California in 1801 and quickly established California roots with his marriage to
María Antonia Carrillo y Lugo, daughter of his commanding officer. The Carrillos and the Lugos
were typical of the province's earliest settlers, racially mixed individuals who had left the
impoverished towns and mining centers of Sinaloa and Sonora in search of better times, racial
"whitening," and upward social mobility through military service.
De la Guerra became commander of the Santa Bárbara presidio in 1815, a position he held until
1827. His Spanish birth, military rank, connections in Mexico City, wife's extended family, and
shrewd business acumen helped him build a diversified enterprise that survived the political turmoil
and shifting economic climate of California in the first half of the nineteenth century.
His official responsibility for overseeing presidio accounts and supply chains enabled him to steer
contracts toward his uncle's Mexico City trading firm and to his own burgeoning commercial
ventures. He carefully nurtured relationships with ship captains and Franciscan missionaries, many
of them fellow Spaniards, and garnered handsome commissions trading with merchants from Peru
and the Philippines as well as New Spain.
By the 1820s, de la Guerra had broadened his business and family ties to include merchants from
Great Britain and the United States. His daughter Teresa's marriage to a Briton and her sister Anita's
to an American formed part of a calculated "strategy to capture the potentially hostile traders and
