Self Love And Self Compassion
The idea of self–love and self–compassion have been considered taboo for many years. It came off
as arrogant, narcissistic, or just plain stuck–up. Anyone that practiced self–love openly was shunned
and then hated for their unmatchable self understanding. However, as years pass, the idea of openly
loving oneself has gradually become more ubiquitous leading to a generation of big headed, self–
entitled teenagers who care for no one but themselves. As a consequence of this rapid phenomenon,
we must crush the self–esteem of today's adolescence and make them feel like our approval is the
key to their value. Therefore, to prevent today's youth from feeling a greater sense of self–
compassion and love, we must maintain our emotional dictatorship over them by categorizing,
ridiculing, and comparing them to each other.
Many times people seem to get self esteem and self compassion confused. They are not, by any
means, the same thing. Self–esteem is "an individual sense of his or her value or worth, or the extent
to which a person values, approves of, appreciates, prizes, or likes him or herself (Blascovich &
Tomaka, 1991)." Whereas self–compassion, as defined by Strauss et al., "consists of five elements:
recognizing suffering, understanding the universality of human suffering, feeling for the person
suffering, tolerating uncomfortable feelings, and motivation to act/acting to alleviate suffering".

To him it was very easy to disclose private information about him and his family. Since one of us

Kornfield No Self
In "No Self or True Self," Jack Kornfield believes that meditation and spiritual practice allows us to
figure out who we really are as human beings. In order to do this, he believes that we need to
accomplish two tasks; discover selflessness and develop a healthy sense of self. A person needs to
realize and learn that we all coexist and that a single identity doesn't define someone, in order to live
a fulfilling and awakening life. Kornfield's account of the self is logical and good because a person
would be nowhere and not succeed in life without the help of others around them and everyone

Some might argue that reclamation is a negative aspect of developing a healthy sense of self.
According to Kornfield, "In reclamation, we bring attention to understanding the painful conditions
that created our weak, deficient, or barricaded sense of self" (208). The act of bringing attention and

Reflection Of Self Reflection
As I finish my first semester of college in Chico, I now realize how much I have changed over the
past three to four months. Coming here was a huge adjustment, but the town, people, and classes I

perspective, your physical body, including your motor coordination and your physical abilities, have
altered" (Thia Wolf 2012). As a child, I was very closed minded, it was my way or no way. Now that
i'm older I see that i'm open to more things due to my experiences throughout life; this is why I
believe in the social/relational approaches to understanding the formation of identity. These theories
suggest that we form our identity from past experiences with others. In my opinion, these theories
are the most precise because one needs to experience with others to help identify themselves. Shared

According to Dr.Penner's lecture about Canadian adolescents, adolescence is defined as the years in
which biological, physical, emotional and social movements transpire to cue the onset of adulthood
and signify the end of childhood. I believe that it is in these crucial years that highly self–conscious
teenagers desperately strive to find their identity rather than their sense of self. Sense of self is

suddenly become a self because parents are now able to understand them. The sense of self unlike
identity, in the early years, is not criticized to be true or false or judged as right or wrong. Rather, it
is associated with the feeling of safekeeping, security and recognition of attributes that the child
acknowledges as important. Throughout later years, sense of self becomes positively or negatively
correlated with characteristics that parents value and portray for their children according to how they
live their lives. I highly place importance on the fact that this sense of self must be nurtured in their
environment and cherished by their loved ones. On the other hand, identity is an internal, subjective
self structure that is comprised of one's own personal experiences, history, attitudes, morality,
abilities, drives and overall uniqueness. This complex internal structure of individuality is adaptive
to their audience. I am certain that every teenager's main aspiration in their adolescent years is to
find their identity. Identity from my perspective is something that unique and is customized to every
individual. I do believe that adolescents begin to piece together their identity through what they have

Throughout my self–observation, I felt the need to start with a baseline of who I am. Being raised in
the south I learned to respect myself and others, but sometimes people are just right down
obnoxious. Also, I hold myself to high standards because there's no reason why I cannot make my

Literature, a body of written works, is something that I sometimes find myself leisurely immersing
in. It allows for the limitations of my own ordinary situations to be seized momentarily whilst I let
mind be free and my own imagination wander. The pursuit of self–discovery is present within many
forms of literature and can be told through plots and central characters. I often discover new societal
universal longings that arise from the novels pages which encourages me to reflect on my own sense

Self–esteem, also known as self–respect, is the confidence in one's worth or abilities. Low self–
esteem is the opposite or lack of confidence in one's own worth. Self–esteem is shaped throughout
one's life, it will increase and decrease throughout life but with essentially remain at the same level.
Self–esteem has both positive and negative affects depending on if an individual has low or high
self–esteem. There is more research on the effects of low self–esteem because it usually has to most
negative effects on someone's health. Self–respect can also influence one's decision making, people
with low self–esteem generally make poor or unwise decisions due to lack of confidence. Bullying
can be caused by low self–esteem or causes the development of low self–esteem. Someone who
does not have high levels of self–confidence may try and belittle others to feel better about
themselves; being bullied can in turn cause someone to feel bad about themselves, therefore, causing
low self–esteem. Ultimately, low self–esteem has been known to negatively affect someone's health,
it can cause anxiety, depression, or lead to drug usage. Self–esteem has been studied for decades, by
focusing on the development, self–imagery, effect on decision making, bullying, and the negative

In this modern day world people may continuously confuse similarly used words, and often think

  • 1. Self Love And Self Compassion The idea of self–love and self–compassion have been considered taboo for many years. It came off as arrogant, narcissistic, or just plain stuck–up. Anyone that practiced self–love openly was shunned and then hated for their unmatchable self understanding. However, as years pass, the idea of openly loving oneself has gradually become more ubiquitous leading to a generation of big headed, self– entitled teenagers who care for no one but themselves. As a consequence of this rapid phenomenon, we must crush the self–esteem of today's adolescence and make them feel like our approval is the key to their value. Therefore, to prevent today's youth from feeling a greater sense of self– compassion and love, we must maintain our emotional dictatorship over them by categorizing, ridiculing, and comparing them to each other. Many times people seem to get self esteem and self compassion confused. They are not, by any means, the same thing. Self–esteem is "an individual sense of his or her value or worth, or the extent to which a person values, approves of, appreciates, prizes, or likes him or herself (Blascovich & Tomaka, 1991)."
