Why Is Artifice Important
Artifice has been proven to be such an essential skill over the years and today according to Chris Hedge in his expert Empire of Illusion. Hedge
brings up good points that are true about article in today's world however I disagree that it is the most essential skill. Hedge provides examples
that include politics, entertainment, and advertisement. Artifice has been and still is used everyday where people either are aware of it or not.
Artifice can be a good thing but only in certain circumstances and never 100% good. Trickery can be useful for companies wanting to sell products
or entertainment. It helps actors, and especially politicians who need to gain support. To be able to make others believe in something that may not
be true is an amazing skill to have but not the most essential as Hedge claims. A reason why artifice is not the most essential skill to have is because
of the side effects that comes with it. In the end it is better if you are honest about things and try to find more positive things to gain support or
money. It may be tempting to trick others especially if they are stubborn or strongly opposed you and your values but all together it will not work out
and will not last. The most essential skill is not artifice because there are leaders that actually follow through with giving support... Show more content

There are away multiple sides and to trick others into following you will only grant you short term success. Political leaders like Donald Trump
promise certain things in their campaign that never follow through like his famous wall that will stop immigration. Yes he has tried to make a move
but his promise did not keep up which can decline his support. When you trick someone they eventually will find out or maybe they will not but
eventually they will have to disagree with you at some point. Artifice especially in politics will only get you so far as with

Artifice: Powerful Skill In Politics And Consumer Culture
Success from artifice is often found in consumer culture; marketing experts working for businesses to manipulate the consumers thoughts to ultimately
buy the product or service. Many marketing tactics use clever word choice or actions to manipulate an audience to think a certain way so the business
can succeed by making profits. For example, the bait and switch tactic: a form of fraud in which an inferior product is advertised specifically to
compel the consumer to buy a more expensive product. The business is successful because the consumer has been manipulated to think the inferior
product is too cheap so there must be something wrong with it, so they buy the more expensive product which allows the business to make more
money. In addition, Lucky Strike also manipulated the consumers in the 1920s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The company made ads depicting a person with a shadow of a fatter person to scare the consumer into buying Lucky Strike cigarettes to avoid weight
gain. The fear tactics were very beneficial to the company since many were compelled to buy cigarettes to keep the weight off, making Lucky Strike
more successful with the increase in sales. Artifice is used heavily in consumer culture to raise sales and has been effectively working for businesses.
While artifice can seem as it is the most essential skill in politics and consumer culture, it is not as important as one might think in the long run.
Overtime, artifice does not hold up. In consumer culture, artifice is usually revealed quickly; the revelation does more harm to the company's
reputation than truth from the beginning would. In 2015, Volkswagen lost a great deal of profits and received a negative connotation to their reputation
due to an

Artifice Research Paper
Argumentative essay Nowadays the general public is fooled by the government and big companies through the art of artifice. Artifice is the art of
deception, and in our consumer culture today, CEO and the higher ups use this art to sell their product and earn revenue. In the excerpt by Chris
Hedges, talks about the political leaders who using deception to advertise and market their beliefs or products to give the audience a sense of faux
intimacy. Though some might find this art quiet foul, I find it to be very interesting how the use of artifice can manipulate people to buy their
business. The excerpt teaches that in a consumer culture, to sell a product, you will need to have mastered the art of deception, create a well thought
out narrative to be able to sufficiently sell or succeed in the consumer culture of today.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the excerpt Chris Hedges says, "... to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be content or sincere, or honest." For
example when selling a product, you can lie to your viewers about the product as long as the lie isn't obvious and the product still appears to be true
and relative. In other words, this means when you sell a product and tell the audience the complete and honest truth, no matter how bad it is, this will
scare your audience away, but when you sell a product and tell more lies than truth, you can somewhat curve the narrative and appeal to your audience.
All this is important in a consumer because the best use of artifice will survive in the competition of marketing, though this is true there is another way
to attract an audience willing to invest money into your product or

The Importance Of Artifice In Elections
When asked whether he learned anything as an actor that's been useful to his presidency, Ronald Reagan replied, " There have been times in this
office when I've wondered how you can do the job if you hadn't been an actor." Politicians must employ methods of artifice and present themselves
as an idealistic image of themselves in order to win elections. The recent election of 2016 shows that artifice is essential in winning voters. Donald
Trump, throughout his campaign, displayed an image of himself that people would perceive as "tough" and "strong". The image of Trump as a reality
TV star made him more likable by Americans. Trump spoke openly to people's economic stress, cultural fears and the disillusion with politicians. He

Marge Piercy's The Pampered Life Of Artifice
The Pampered Life of a Bonsai What if beer was never invented? What would fraternities take pride in? What would they do in place of a keg
stand? What would be the drink of choice for white dads across America? A world where my dad can be seen drinking a girly drink while admiring
the freshly cut lawn is a humorous yet alarming possibility. This nightmarish thought would be reality without women. Research lead by historian Jane
Peyton, supports the idea that women's specialty for millenniums was brewing beer. Although women are more to society than the keepers of the art of
brewing, this is one startling difference that women have made on society. Women are capable of working hard, specializing in areas of expertise and
intellectually competent. Marge Piercy would agree that women hold great potential, if not hindered by the harmful effects of misogyny and the
patriarchal tendencies of society. Although to the untrained eye, "A Work of Artifice" may appear to be simply about bonsai trees, the poem actually
uses an extended metaphor to emphasize... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Piercy uses precise language which highlights the destructive nature of misogyny, "but a gardener carefully pruned it (bonsai tree)," she uses a
euphemism to describe the cutting of branches. Pruning is a process that involves the careful trimming of a plant for aesthetic purposes. The choice of
euphemisms emphasize the ignorance of the gardener who believes his actions promote prosperity, although his efforts only stunt growth and damage
the bonsai tree. The gardener also "whittles back the branches," which is another way that he damages the tree. Similarly, the women involved with the
extended metaphor are handicapped by misogynists. Whittling happens to be another fancy word for harming, cutting, or debilitating a plant. The
unintentional harm of the bonsai tree compares to the ignorance of misogynists and the harm they impose on

Artifice Analysis
"The most essential skill in political theater and a consumer culture is artifice," said by Chris Hedges. Do we usually get lied to? Or are we really
hearing the truth? In most cases, Politicians do lie, but that doesn't mean that they all do. If a Politician does lie, they usually get caught up in the act.
Or in other words they get caught in a scandal.Artifice is a problem because it's a kind of way of tricking people. Such as involving lies, or "white lies,"
which is the truth, but not the whole truth. It is important because we, the people, deserve the right of the truth. No one likes to be played around by
lying. People may think artifice is not an essential skill, but it is because without it we wouldn't listen to any other person's opinion for a right. Or in
other words, some people don't know what they want, and they would rather listen to another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the skill of artifice that helps them. They use a personal narrative. Yet sometimes their narrative is irrelevant from their actual life. The quality
of lying, but yet make it seem like it is true, helps out on what a person wants. Such as a political speaker. "Political leaders, who use the tools of
mas propaganda to create a sense of aux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest," which basically means that
political speakers, or any kind of speaker, need certain skills to be able to get other people's attention. Without these skills, perhaps we wouldn't have
the rights we have now, or other things. A way that a politician can use artifice is saying or "promising" something to their people, preferably their
followers, then not completing what ever they said they would do. Suddenly the followers either get upset, and want to have a protest or forget about
it. This all matters because many politicians can use artifice in many different ways. It's all up to the person on what they want to say. Also how they
want to express

What Skills Is Artifice Analysis
Hedges' argument that "the most essential skill... is artifice" can be true to an extent; however, there are other skills that are also essential in both
political theater and consumer culture. These days, the first person many people think about after hearing the word "politics" is the current president of
the United States of America, Donald Trump. People immediately think of him due to the fact that the 2016 presidential election was one of the most
controversial elections in the past few decades. Many people either love and support Donald Trump or they hate and despise him. People could have
such negative feelings toward him due to the fact that he has been caught "stretching the truth" and contradicting his own statements from the past

The Disadvantages Of Artifice
Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a society we are guided by false veneers and deceit.
Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize
artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges
believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and
how individuals become "unreal" and "ignored" if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this "strategy" causes a
never–ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The
celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across
and trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced this year regarding the sexual harassment
of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other actors have been using artifice to keep their crimes a secret from the public. One of the most
noteworthy examples is the accusations made against film executive and producer, Harvey Weinstein. Over eighty women have stepped forward to
share their stories about his

Analysis Of Marge Piercy's A Work Of Artifice
"The United States Women's National Team is paid almost four times less than the United States Men's National Team, despite producing nearly $20
million in revenues for U.S. Soccer in 2015". Some may argue that just because they are women they don't deserve equal pay or the same rights as the
men's soccer players. This is one of many situations that contributes injustices against women. It is these injustices that Marge Piercy exposes in her
feminist poem "A Work of Artifice." Although to the untrained eye,"A Work of Artifice" may appear to be simply about bonsai trees, the poem actually
uses an extended, implied metaphor or to emphasize the damaging effects of misogyny on women and to underscore the patriarchal ignorance that
oppresses women.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Piercy compares men to a gardener, which outlines the damaging effects of patriarchy. For example, Piercy states," The gardener croons, it is your
nature to be small and cozy, domestic and weak; how lucky, little tree, to have a pot to grow in." and how "attractive" the pot is. The gardener truly
feels that he isn't doing any harm to the bonsai, that the plant is very lucky to have such a nice, attractive pot to live in. The gardener does not realize
that he is doing more harm to the bonsai by not letting it grow to its full potential. Piercy then shows how the gardner manipulates the appearance or
hinders the growth of the bonsai. She is making the relation as to how men treat women in present society. She then exemplifies her opinion of men
being an inconsiderate, ignorant species that hinders a woman's potential to be succeed on her own and fulfill her own aspirations. Through her opinion,
she then makes the connection that the pot and the bonsai refer to women only being a stay at home mom or in the kitchen cooking, are their only
duty. By using an extended metaphor, Piercy explains her views as to how men are inconsiderate, ignorant and completely ruthless towards women
because of the patriarchal society that is present

Comparison Of Barbie Doll And A Work Of Artifice
In two poems, the American poet, novelist, and social activist Marge Piercy addressed the seriousness of gender roles and oppression of women. She
does so in her poems "Barbie Doll" and "A Work of Artifice." After examining them closely, the use of imagery and tone show two different outlooks
on the topic. In the first poem, Marge shows that a woman changes herself, while in the second poem she writes that woman are changed forcefully.
In each poem, we see immense vivid and powerful imagery. In "Barbie Doll" we see the entire life of a woman. It starts at a young age, where she
plays with dolls and toy ovens, starting her confines of her role. It moves onto teen years where more and more people would stop seeing her and start

Essay on Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice
Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice by Marge Piercy
"A clever trick, crafty device, or stratagem" is how Webster's Encyclopedia of Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language defines Artifice. Marge
Piercy definitely used "crafty" techniques in writing "A Work ofArtifice." In this poem, Piercy reflects on the growth of a bonsai tree, considering the
molded existence of what it is to what it could have naturally been. With deeper analysis of this poem, the correlation between a bonsai tree and the
shaped role of women within society becomes evident. The poet introduces one specific metaphor in the beginning, comparing the growth of a bonsai
tree to the development of women. This single metaphor is supported throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Every day as he whittles back the branches." This line from Piercy's poem produces a vivid and detailed picture in the imagination of its readers.
Readers visualize an incredibly precise little gardener, as he diligently prunes the bonsai tree. Another of Piercy's lines' is, "could have grown eighty
feet tall on the side of a mountain till split by lightning." Again the reader is provided with detailed illustrations and sounds that correlate with the
picture. In this line, for instance, a magnificent tree high above the skyline, destroyed both by a visual bolt of lightening and a booming crack of
thunder can be seen. Examples of imagery are abundant throughout Piercy's entire poem. As readers look at the poem externally, the imagery is directly
related to a vision of the bonsai tree. With further internal analysis, it becomes evident that there is slight ambiguity within these lines, lending
themselves to have connotative meanings. In such a way, the sense–provoking images the writer includes relate not only to describing a bonsai tree,
but also to explaining the role of women within society.
Specifically, the double meanings of the imagery can be deciphered through examination of the writer's use of metaphors. Each of the descriptions
about the bonsai tree can be applied to women. In the following

A Work Of Artifice By Marge Piercy's Barbie Doll
Treatment of Women in Society Throughout History Women have a major role, not only in society but also in history. The poems "A Work Of
Artifice" and "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy, demonstrates the ideology that society has about women in general. This two poems by Marge Piercy
gives a perspective on how women have been treated throughout history and what a woman has to do in order to qualify to the expectations of society
and be considered a "perfect women". Everyone has their own perspective on how a woman should be in order to be perfect. Probably the perfect

"Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy, the girl was "Healthy, tested intelligent, possessed strong arms and back."(7–8) this indicates that she was a normal girl,
she was good, but she had a "Big nose and fat legs."(6) and that aspect made her imperfect. All the good things she had weren't important, only the
imperfections were pointed out. As well as "A work of Artifice," Marge Piercy gives an image of women as someone weak. The author states that
"The crippled brain, the hair in curlers." In this quote is evident the stereotype of a woman, a woman without a brain who needs to depend on
someone else in order to think; she also needs to be pretty, and spend her time doing her hair to look gorgeous. Both of the poems were written in
different time of period, "Barbie Doll" was written in 1971 and shows a clear idea that society doesn't think about how a comment can affect someone
and when that person is dead, all their flaws go away. This can be seen when the author said, "With the undertaker's cosmetics painted on, a turned–up
putty nose...doesn't she look pretty? Everyone said." When the character is laying down, death, everyone thinks she looks pretty, they don't find her any
imperfection. Lastly, society's perspective hardly changed because "A work of Artifice" by Marge Piercy was written in 1999 and the theme is the
same. The treatment of women throughout history is the

Role Of Artifice In American Politics
"Put your best foot forward," but if that foot is fake, is it really yours? Facades and fallacies have absorbed American politics and entertainment like
vacuum of morality upon our society. Although Americans want to believe that our leaders are honest and are held to a superior moral standard than
the rest of us, the very nature of politics and entertainment requires those who want to be successful to master the art of deception, or as noted by author
Chris Hedges, "the most essential skill...is artifice." Artifice is ultimately the common link with the most successful and most powerful people in the

Empire Of Illusion: The Role Of Artifice In Our Society
As our society keeps expanding, artifice is a skill that dominates our society, and it's used by many people. The general argument made by author
Chris Hedges, in his work Empire of Illusion is that he argues that "the most essential skill... is artifice." Artifice should be avoided but, that's the only
way people can become successful in life.
For instance, since people want to make money, they make fake advertisements about their products. A New Balance sneaker company was false
advertising in claiming its toning walking shoes burns more calories and improved health. On the New Balance website, the company says its true
balance toning sneaker, "uses hidden balance board technology that encourages muscle activation in the glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves, which
makes you burns calories." Additionally, people say the sneakers, which cost $100, do not necessarily boost health benefits and may even lead to
injury. The company tried to use fake information online about the new shoe so people can try to buy it and they will earn money. This proves that this

if people keep on eating processed foods, people will have a high chance of having organ failure, infertility and cancer. In addition, McDonald's might

Work Of Artifice
The poem "A Work of Artifice" by Marge Piercy is easily interpreted as a metaphorical poem about the unfortunate yet accepted societal roles of
women. Piercy depicts a bonsai tree that has the potential to grow tall and beautiful, but instead is neatly trimmed and kept in a small pot. She
describes diminutive tree as being tamed by the gardener at his will. In the last stanza of her poem, Piercy writes that the bonsai tree has become
"domestic and weak," with "bound feet" and a "crippled brain" (lines 14, 20, 21). Charlotte Perkins Gilman tells of a similar situation in her
thought–provoking short story "The Yellow Wall

The house, although beautiful, is institutional; the room the narrator's husband chooses is large and airy, but the great bed is nailed down and there are
bars on the windows. Even the wall–paper itself is unsettling. The narrator describes its color as "repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean
yellow, strangely faded by the slow–turning sunlight" (Gilman, 957). Its pattern is brash and everlasting, "one of those sprawling flamboyant patterns
committing every artistic sin" (Gilman, 957). It is indecipherable, yet the narrator explains that she has made up her mind "for the thousandth time that
[she] will follow that pointless pattern to some sort of conclusion" (Gilman, 960). Essentially, the wallpaper traps the narrator with its confusing and
somewhat enchanting pattern, and it is this image that becomes important: for Gilman, society's repression of women is exactly as the wallpaper. It,
too, is an indecipherable and repellent pattern, which confines women to their houses. Societal convention traps women behind its bars, just as the
wallpaper trapped the

Similarities between Frankenstein and A Work of Artifice
Frankenstein and the poem "A Work of Artifice" portray almost the same message. These pieces by Mary Shelley and Marge Piercy include both
similar themes and ideas. The stories both involve a theme of misconception, similar characters in which is easily depicted, and the theme of alienation
and loneliness presents itself in both pieces. The tree in "A Work of Artifice" and the monster inFrankenstein are outcasts on society itself, the main
characters of each are actually very similar and so is the misconception that falls on both main characters in both pieces of work.
There is a misconception presented in both the needs and wants of both the creature in Frankenstein and the bonsai tree in "A Work of Artifice". "It is

Both the creature from Frankenstein and the bonsai tree from "A Work of Artifice" hold similar traits and characteristics. Victor Frankenstein, the
creature's creator, and the gardener, the bonsai tree's creator hold similar traits and characteristics as well.
The theme of alienation and loneliness both present themselves in these pieces. The tree longs for freedom and to grow and stretch out as long as it
wants to. "Could have grown eighty feet tall on the side of a mountain" (Piercy 3–4). This quote shows exactly the longing for growth upon it. "But a
gardener carefully pruned it. It is nine inches high. Every day as he whittles back the branches the gardener croons, It is your nature to be small and
cozy." (Piercy 6–13). Instead of the tree expanding out and growing to its full potential like it would like to do, the gardener cuts it down every day
and prevents it from growing at all. The tree has to sit alone in a pot, and not prosper and thrive to be the biggest and tallest tree there it wants to be.
This theme presents itself in Frankenstein also, "All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things!
Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by annihilation of one of us" (Shelley 95).

How would you feel if you used trickery to persuade someone on your argument or ideas? For me it would feel very unpleasing and i would feel a
bit of guilt because having to use it for some what an untruthful statement. It's kinda just like soccer say perhaps you dive or pretend to get hurt by a

untruthful or say perhaps very unfair. It is a very cheap way to go through the plan but it gets the job done. If you don't use artifice you are very
likely to not succeed in the campaign or process that you are in. Artifice is an essential skill to learn and with the skill you will come out with great

Forrest Thomson Poetic Artifice Analysis
Two – Co–Option Co–option is I argue most clearly defined by Veronica Forrest–Thomson's Poetic Artifice. A text, that pushed back against critics of
the previous generation and endeavoured early on to integrate structuralist thought with post structuralist. This integration between structuralism and
post–structuralism can be seen as an attempt to get at the importance of poetry. In an attempt to stress and illuminate poetry's unique ability to be
"transformative of both language and the world." Forrest–Thomson in Poetic Artifice demands an intense focus on "all the rhythmic, phonetic, verbal
and logical devices which makes poetry different from prose" to best consider this 'transformative' nature. It is in this distinguishing of poetry from
prose, and the highly formalist manner and "structuralist distrust of language's transparency" in which she follows that one can also see a similar
differencing between the broader spectrum of literature with the sciences. There is no need in Forrest–Thomson's work for differing areas to be
inclusive of one another, to the point of loss of individuality, because of a homogenizing of methodology and epistemic reasoning. Throughout both
Poetic Artifice and her thesis Poetry as Knowledge: The Use of Science by Twentieth Century Poets, Forest–Thomson can be seen to put forward a new
structure, in which separation is crucial for any kind of interrelation between the two fields of knowledge. She follows a similar stance as that of Kelly

Analysis Of Marge Piercy's A Work Of Artifice
In her poem, "A Work of Artifice," Marge Piercy describes a bonsai tree, a plant that if left alone would grow to be monumental in size and
strength, that has been deliberately cut back since it was a seedling, doomed to a life in miniature. She then masterfully creates an extended
metaphor between the life of a bonsai tree and the limited role forced upon women in her time. Piercy begins her poem by noting the loss of
potential represented by the bonsai tree, sitting in a pot when it could have, and by all means should have, grown to be "eighty feet tall," and kept
growing forever unless stopped "by lightning" or by some other force (lines 3&5). She underscores the hollowness of the bonsai's existence and the
condescension of the male gardener... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The gardener reminds the tree daily that it is meant to be "small and cozy," which Piercy makes clear is a euphemism for "domestic and weak"

gardener does not do any of this maliciously, nevertheless, is committing a grievous transgression in his treatment of the tree. In the last part of the
poem, the author draws comparisons between the bonsai tree and the female condition. She states "with living creatures one must begin very early to
dwarf their growth," seemingly still referring to the bonsai tree, but then adds "the bound feet, the crippled brain, the hair in curlers" (17–22). All of

Donald Trump's Use Of Artifice In The Media
"Political leaders who use the tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere,
or honest." In the quote, Hedges is explaining who uses artifice and what they do with their power. Artifice is a skill that is difficult to maintain
and keep realistic. Being the most essential skill, artifice is the art of deceiving. People's ideas and thoughts are altered for the gain of one and the
loss of another. Everyone will need artifice at some point in their life to get the attention, item, or person they want. Specifically, our current
President, Donald Trump, uses artifice all too much. He has exceeded his use of artifice. Trump won was because of his excellent use of artifice. He
was able to persuade enough people to vote for him and his changes he would fulfill. Artifice takes quite skill to make believable for your audience.
The importance of artifice during his ruling is immense, making it the most essential skill. Donald Trump is portrayed as a lying, evil individual in the
media. Although we may not know the complete and total truth, we are able to identify that he is lying about something. For example, one of the very
first things Trump had said to gather the attention of the audience would be about getting rid of all illegal immigrants. Rapidly, people began turning
their heads and opening their ears when they finally understood what he was trying to do. "The consistency and emotional appeal

Work Of Artifice
Identity in "The Work of Artifice" In the poem "The Work of Artifice" written by Marge Piercy, the motif of identity is dominant. The author
describes the making of a bonsai tree and explains the gardener's point of view on it as it is pruned and cared for by him. Bonsai trees are usually
versions of a normal tree that are hindered in growth and kept miniature for the sole purpose of visual pleasure. They require regular pruning and an
extensive amount of work by the gardener so they can grow properly. The Bonsai tree is tied into the poem extremely well by the author. She even
produces a magnificent extended metaphor out of the bonsai tree. During the poem Piercy focuses on two main forms of identity: the bonsai tree's
natural identity and the identity that is described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is stated by the author at the beginning of the poem when she says, "eighty feet tall on the side of a mountain" (lines 3–4). Piercy is describing
what the tree could have been if it were not restricted by the gardener. If the tree would have been fortunate enough to grow up in the wild, it could
have grown to the height of at least eighty feet tall and would have been on the side of a mountain where its roots could span the entire
mountainside instead of only a few square inches inside of the bonsai pot. This description could easily be related back to a child being raised. A
child could have easily had the potential to change the world; however, if they are not cared for in the right way and allowed to reach their own
limits, they will be restricted and forced to be what their caretakers allow them to be. This could also be a metaphor for a marriage. The wife being the
Bonsai tree and the husband being the gardener. In this context the natural identity would be that of the wife that has the potential to be extraordinary
by herself; however, she is held down and restricted by her controlling

Identity in "A Work of Artifice" There are many motifs and symbols in the poem "A Work of Artifice," by Marge Piercy. But out of all the motifs
being used in the poem, the primary one is the identity –or lack there of. In the poem, the speaker uses a metaphor to compare the main character to a
bonsai tree, in that they are both "trimmed" and kept from reaching their full potential. In the poem the main character is very similar to a bonsai tree
in that they both are being held back and having their identities stolen and being forced to be something that they are not. In lines 1–5 the speaker
describes the bonsai "The bonsai tree. . ./ Could have grown eighty feet tall/ on the side of the mountain/ till split by lightning." (Piercy lines 1–5)....

The speaker compares the bound feet of a bonsai and a woman as well in the twenty–first line. This is very true because the bonsai's "feet" are rooted
to the ground just like the woman is rooted to the man that she is married to; and she wouldn't be able to survive without him, so even if she did
want to change her identity she couldn't. The line about bound feet is an allusion to women in ancient china who would go through excruciating pain
to bind their feet so they could be more attractive to men. Also, the speaker mentions that it must start early if you want to truly dwarf the growth of a
bonsai, otherwise it could begin to become it's own tree. Societies view in the time of this was that woman were supposed to be oppressed, which
starts the dwarfing process at an early age. This continues to take away from the identity and more forces an identity on a woman/bonsai rather than
letting them make an identity for

Poem Analysis: A Work Of Artifice
The main ideas that we have read in our readings covered what Women's Studies is and Dominant Ideas About Women. Three passages that caught
my attention out of the 32 passages were "A Work of Artifice" by Marge Piercy, "Gender Inequity in School: Not a Thing of the Past" by Karen
Zittleman and David Sadker, and lastly, "Have you Ever Heard of Asian–American Feminists" by Stacey Yap. With these three passages, there was
good information for me to interpret and to reflect upon in these readings.
"A Work of Artifice" is a very touching poem by Marge Piercy. The poem speaks volumes about man's desire and quest to control women's sexuality
and the ideology of primitive patriarchal beliefs. The poem is about a woman who is "groomed" by the gardener ... Show more content on

She told us that she didn't even see herself identifying with "them". To tell the truth, I have not heard Asian–American feminists voice their opinions
too often, not saying that they have not. At any rate, Stacey Yap made a very bold and powerful statement that stood out to me in this passage. She
said: "The unexpected role that I play in influencing my student's lives will probably help them remember how much common ground we share even
though we are ethnically different." I agree and believe that women can be ethnically different yet still be very similar. There are different challenges
and struggles within different cultures, however those struggles that women go through are universal struggles such as the transformation between
childhood and teenage years (puberty and their menstrual cycles). They also go through harassment of all forms; for example, physical, mental and
social harassment. These problems are universal problems for a woman to go through. Later in the passage, she states that she acknowledges the fact
that Asian–American women are not represented in the mainstream of women's studies. It surprised me that she said that she does not feel upset nor
angry by the lack of recognition that these Asian–American receive. As I said before, I feel as though the ones voicing their opinions about feminism
indeed are not Asian–American women. What Yap tries to teach her students is that whether they are Asian–born women or American–born Asian
women, their experiences have helped shape the history, politics, and literature of this country. She advocates and encourages Asian women to speak
for themselves because, while they share a great deal with other women, their (Asian women) experiences are

Chris Hedges What Is Artifice
What is artifice? And why is it known as "the most essential skill" by Chris Hedges from an excerpt from Empire of Illusion. Artifice is a clever
trick to deceive others like what many politicians used going from the past until nowadays. Because the Americans love to have good reputation,
most politicians that have the ability to do so as Chris Hedges's argues "the most essential skill...is atifice" proves to be true. To begin with, Hedges
states that politicians nowadays do not need to have the abilities to make a country to be successful; however, they only need to have the ability to
build a good reputation for the people even if it is a fake one like how Hedges states, "political leaders who use the tools of mass propaganda ...no
longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest." Similar to the 2016 presidential election, Donald J. Trump won the election was not because he was
great; however, he won because he was able to use various propagrandas and mass medias to build him in front of the American people. In addition,
back in 1960 presidential election, John F. Kennedy won the election due to the use of televisions and his outer appearance, which they helped him to
win the election. This proves Hedges's arguement to be true.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Work of Artifice
Marge Piercy
In the poem, A Work of Artifice, Marge Piercy by using imagery of a tended bonsai tree, as well as the contrast between natural and tamed, she
emphasizes the effect of the limits set on a being by another being. The contrast of imagery about "the bonsai tree/ in the attractive pot/ could have
grown eighty feet tall/ on the side of the mountain/ till split by lightning" portrays lost potential. If the tree was left to its' own natural devices, the tree
would grow strong and mighty, held up high by the side of the mountain, weathering the storms and its life ends miraculously. However, rather than
growing to its full height, "a gardener/ carefully pruned it./ It is nine inches high." This can be related to the potential people have to achieve
something great. Not everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"It is your nature/ to be small and cozy,/ domestic and weak; how lucky, little tree,/ to have a pot to grow in." It's interesting that the speaker
changes from talking about a bonsai tree, to talking to the bonsai tree. The speaker belittles the characteristics portrayed by the tree: small, domestic,
weak and little. Yet, these qualities were not established by the tree itself, but the role assigned by the gardener. Nevertheless, the gardener is
"caring" for the tree by providing a safe place to grow! A pot. The pruned, groomed, petite tree framed by an attractive pot only holds an artificial
beauty. Gardeners in our own life could be those who believe that they are benefiting yourself, but ultimately places limitations on ourselves. An
example that comes to mind is when a teacher consults a student that they "can't be that", or "not to specialize in that" because it doesn't fit their image
of the student. Snip. A branch is gone. Potential is lost. Those continuing to work towards their dream, regardless of those who try to "fix" them, are

Marge Piercy's Poem A Work Of Artifice
A Work of Artifice Women have historically been mistreated and considered the weaker gender , while men are seen as the dominant gender.
"Feminism isn't about making women stronger. Women are already strong. It's about changing the way the world perceives that strength."– G.D
Anderson. This quote from G.D Anderson corresponds to Marge Piercy's poem "A Work of Artifice". "A Work of Artifice" is an allegory
published in 1999. The speaker is a feminist and the poem is written in third person. The poem sets a sarcastic tone while talking about the
oppression of women and how women suffer in society. Piercy uses poetic devices such as metaphors, diction and allusions to show how society
subjugates women to fit the "accepted" idea of beauty. Throughout "A Work of Artifice" , an extended metaphor of a Bonsai Tree is used. The
Bonsai tree represents a women. A gardener is also used to represent a man and/or society. The speaker expresses that the Bonsai Tree could have

Diction is used very early in "A work of ARTIFICE" , the word artifice is a relevant example of the use of diction. When the reader first sees the
word "art" in artifice, an image of beauty arouses the mind. However, artifice has nothing to do with beauty , it actually means to deceive others. This
is seen in the poem as the bonsai tree or the women is being oppressed to fit the ideal image of beauty in society. Another relevant example of the use
of diction is the word "pruned". Pruned is often associated with cutting down a tree or plant to make it look more attractive . In the poem the gardener
pruned the bonsai tree. Through this , the speaker shows how society suppresses women from reaching their full protein to fit their stereotype and
remain "attractive". The use of diction compliments the extended metaphor and helps show how society subjugates

Des Esseintes' Infatuation with Artifice in Huysmans' Against Nature
In J.–K Huysmans Against Nature, Des Esseintes rebels against his family, religion, and Parisian society to establish an identity unique to himself. He
perceives this rejection of the truistic self as the development of individuality when, in actuality, it is only a self deriving from his reaction to the
overstimulated public. By decorating his abode with eccentric objects, he falsely believes that he can detach himself from the common populace. When
he finds new objects to focus upon, he is able to depose his emotions and instill them within the object. Des Esseintes wants to be a rare individual;

nervous attacks when she was under lights or heard noises and his father "was almost a complete stranger" because he was constantly on business

character in opposition to his extremely drab, distant parents. His childhood is riddled with boredom and solitude which enforces his natural tendency
to be an outcast. While Des Esseintes may claim to have a unadulterated identity, he does many things in response to hisupbringing:
"Thus, in hateful and contemptuous memory of his childhood, he had suspended from the ceiling of this room a little silver cage containing a cricket
which chirped as other crickets had once chirped among the embers in the fireplace at Chateau de Lourps. Whenever he heard this familiar sound, all
the silent evenings of constraint he had spent in his mother's company and all the misery he had endured in the course of a lonely, unhappy childhood
came back to haunt him"6.
By having this as a reminder of his mother and of Chateau de Lourps, Des Esseintes is momentarily able to purge himself of the past. The object is an
escape from the reality of his past memories and recollections. When he engages in

Literary Analysis Of Marge Piercy 's ' Barbie Doll ' And '...
Allusion and Metaphor in the Poems of Marge Piercy
Although the poems "Barbie Doll" and "A Work of Artifice" both deal with the subject of women, Marge Piercy uses subtly different approaches in
tone of voice, metaphorical style, and use of irony. While "Barbie Doll" uses the form of allusion to compare afemale child to a doll and demonstrates a
strong tone of anger and irony, "A Work of Artifice" uses metaphor as a way to discuss the subject of women indirectly. Both poems succeed in making
strong statements about the position of women in society and how they are constructed by society to serve others. In the first stanza of "Barbie Doll,"
Piercy refers to the child in the third person. She writes about how the young girl is socialized into acting like a girl, just like all the rest. She writes,
"This girlchild was born as usual/ and presented dolls that did pee–pee/ and miniature GE stoves and irons/ and wee lipsticks the color of cherry
candy." (Piercy 1, 4). In these first four lines, Piercy makes a strong statement that even as children, girls are given the accessories of grown women.
Through play with these toys, they become accustomed to interacting with domestic appliances and make–up products. They are given dolls that are
meant to function as stand–ins for their own future infants. By using the words "wee" and "miniature" and "candy," Piercy is suggesting that these are
conditioning tools that are packaged as appealing toys so that the girl children will be

Citizens have been misled to think alike to change the way of society and the world. A more familiar example to many would be the influence artifice
had in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union back in World War Two and other wars before that. Unfortunate citizens have been exposed to the power of
artifice by tyrants to keep the war effort going. Propaganda was used in almost every nation undergoing war. TheUnited States have also taken part in
this to help resist despicable nations from rising. The effects afterwards were shown to be drastic. It's obvious to see the effects the second world
war has done to society. Hate groups grow like tumors in the general public, families have been torn apart, and nations can not be seen the same
way as before. The use of artifice has changed the way we live our lives today, it just goes to show that it can be proven to be a very vital skill to

The Importance Of Artifice In Society
Although many people may like to think of America as a honest and moral nation, it is no secret that artifice has cemented itself as an indispensable
skill, exploited by many to achieve their own ambitions. Artifice, characterized through the usage of cunning devices or expedients to deceive others,
is often utilized by politicians and organizations to help push their own agendas. As illustrated by Chris Hedges in his social commentary, Empire of
Illusion, "artifice" has emerged to become so ubiquitous and essential throughout American society, whether in business or the entertainment industry.
Essential, in the essence that without it, people in any industry are more likely to be disadvantaged in achieving their personal goals. In today's
modern world, no area has seen more abuse of artifice than in the field of media and politics. Its common knowledge that newspapers skew reports to
their own biases and politicians often tell half–truths to cover–up ulterior motives. Unfortunately, these politicians and media giants hold extremely
influential positions in society, and their usage of artifice is extremely damaging to the integrity and accountability within the United States. As a
result, the press as well as the general populace must utilize free speech to expose this behavior. Despite the complete immorality of the usage of
artifice, such chicanery remains essential for success in media and politics. Artifice generated through the media plays a pivotal role in the spread

Through his work, Mr. Ramsey is able to build himself up and look as though he is a strong male figure. Lily also finds strength within her artistry,

A female artist gives up society's forced vision of marriage in order to achieve ultimate individuality and freedom within her art. Lily is only able
to part herself from this tradition by "gathering a desperate courage" (50) which would eventually "urge her own exemption from the universal
law"(50). This "universal law" was the belief that women could only be whole and complete by having a male counterpart. Lily's rejection of marital
life is a tragedy in Mrs. Ramsey's eyes; Mrs. Ramsey represents a consensus of society's beliefs and feels that "an unmarried woman has missed the best
of life" (49). Mrs. Ramsey sees her as "cold and aloof and rather self–sufficing" (104), all of which are characteristics that women should not possess.
Women are expected to be self–sacrificing and in a constant cheery mood so that they will uplift and provide contentment for their husbands. Her
civilization looks down upon her for being an "independent little creature" (17) who "would never marry" (17). Lily is reduced to being "little"
throughout the novel not because she was literally small, but because society saw her as insignificant and unproductive as a female artist. Only men
were supposed to be the ones who could possibly handle a singular life.
Mr. Ramsey defeats this image because he is weak and needs someone to be a martyr to his philosophical work. He needs others to validate his work.

Hedge's Use Of Artifice In Politics
"The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who stand by and do nothing." – Albert Einstein Based on Hedge's iconic statement
that "the most essential skill... is artifice", one can infer that politicians use narrative as a strategy to increase their following. This causes controversy
among the audience who may only decide their candidate through a subliminal message therefore empathizing with the candidate rather than voting
based on their intellect and opinions. While it may seem as regular propaganda, it is a tool to deceive the viewer. Although it may be a compelling
strategy, artifice creates a barrier between the politician and the audience making the politician unable to connect with his followers. To begin with, the
passage strikes at the qualities that define a politician. Hedges valiantly indicates that "...Political leaders no longer need to be competent, sincere or
honest...." More specifically, the author writes that those are the only qualities they need, consequently... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, Hedges adds "...The consistency and emotional appeal of the story are paramount..." thus emphasizing the importance of a personal
narrative. Paramount meaning that the reactions are endless and will help the candidate obtain their goal because the opinion of the public is of utmost
importance. In order to appeal to the public, convincing them to choose a leader must be gained through emotional manipulation. Pathological thinking
is done often throughout this process as the candidates let the citizens hear what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. Essentially, the
candidates will go to the ends of the earth to gain empathy from the audience because that is the key to winning as explained by Chris Hedges.

Presenting Yourself As An Artifice Essay
The passage suggests that leaders need to have a false relationship with their citizens in order to not become "unreal."To forget the true principles
of being a leader is astonishing as there is no better way to be a leader than to possess the qualities of being competent and sincere. For generations
it had been that way but now we're in different times and the way we view things have changed. The idea of presenting yourself as an artifice is a
problem because people can no longer have an intimate relationship with their citizens as it no longer calls the their attention. A skill like artiface
presents the people with a leader who is dubious and will not have veracity of plans that will steer his citizens in the right direction. It may be true
that lying is fine in certain situations because it provides you an exit of a problem, but to have every situation as a fraud is a different case that
subjects the people into a world that has no remedy for the damage dishonesty causes. To begin with, leaders who use artifice for their own benefit
will result in the loss of trust from their citizens for they are portraying a distorted image that will guide them into downfall. "Those who have not

Foreshadowing In Marge Piercy's A Work Of Artifice
Looking at the title of Marge Piercy's "A Work of Artifice," readers can break it down and sense the foreshadowing. In the Oxford dictionary,
"artifice" is defined as "clever or cunning devices or expedients, use to trick or deceive others." This foreshadows the deception that the writer exposes
in the poem. Piercy describes a global dilemma the the use of metaphor (a bonsai tree). A bonsai tree is "an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and
artificially prevented from reaching its normal size." Given the opportunity, this tree could grow to enormous heights. Yet, it is trimmed by gardeners'.
This metaphor of the tree compared to women's suppression and the gardener as the suppressor. Women have been "bound" to "domestic" duties and

Readers are introduced to a "bonsai tree in the attractive pot" in the first two lines. Here metaphor is established. The bonsai tree is being compared to
the average woman. Like a bonsai tree, the average woman can become a distinguished figure and meet her full potential. For fear that the tree were
to grow out of its pot, it may be alienated, it remains confined to its pot. A woman may feel inclined to stick to societal expectations for fear of
being detached from others. Consequently, inside the pot, no woman or bonsai tree can grow to their fullest potential. Metaphorical use is also shown
as Piercey compares the gardener to society. Continuously, society tries to mold women into being "domestic and weak." The gardener is shown
doing this as he "carefully prunes" and "whittles back the branches." He is only declining the progression of the bonsai tree as he creates his own
vision for it. In the attempt to be "attractive," the potential of the tree is taken and it continues to watch their branches be pruned and whittled away.
Like this tree, women face the struggle to succeed in life while having societal inequities pinned on their

Why Do Politicians Use Artifice?
Politicians will use artifice to convince the audience of their action, beliefs, and in some cases even mislead. Many major corporations and politicians
use artifice to follow through with their intentions and plans. Artifice is an issue that is very controversial because it draws the line between integrity
and a marketing strategy. On the flip side of the dilemma some narratives may be true to some extent but most of the time it is unlikely that they are
not concocted and false.
In accordance that artifice is the heart is the consumer culture, looking into today's society simple commercials demonstrate that aspect. For example
commercials have influenced an image based culture where pictures are used to get the consumer's attention. In continuation with that actors may be
photoshopped with drastic changes in weightloss. In agreement with Hedge's proposition of illusion,"tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of
faux intimacy with citizens no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest." This statement follows up on the types of propaganda that appeals to
people for it to be successful. This is true because images appeal to people hence the term "image based culture" which in turn result in marketers ...

As an example politicians may promise the audience special privileges or promote a belief or idea when in fact what they are promoting or promising
is nearly impossible or very difficult to achieve. "The reality of the narrative is irrelevant. It can be completely at odds with the facts." This statement
furthermore pushes and explains the actions and behavior of politicians and marketers'.This is factual because throughout past elections most if not all

Work Of Artifice
In "A Work of Artifice," Marge Piercy describes how this bonsai tree has the potential to grow "eighty feet tall" in nature but is instead pruned so that
it only grows up to "nine inches high." In my mind this probably is treating the tree as if it were a person and is describing how although people have
the potential to grow and reach self–actualization but depending on what one grows up to be, one may or may not be able to actually reach that kind
of sense of self.
The title of the poem itself sets a rather satirical tone on the poem considering it is named "A Work of Artifice" which I found interesting because the
"work" is basically how the bonsai tree is "carefully pruned" to only grow up to a certain height and the "artifice" is the fact that if the tree had been
let grow alone in nature, like it's supposed to, it could have reached an incredible amount – "eighty feet tall." If the title had been different as in using

grew up within the confines of those social norms. Marge Piercy, a feminist activist, writer and poet makes a statement against social norms damaging

When coupled with the line "the bound feet" (Piercy, 20), the poem appears as if it were a comment solely about the injustice forced upon Chinese
women from 934 until 1949. Foot binding is a painful process which includes breaking all of the toes and arch of the foot to grossly alter the shape
of the foot, so that the foot, when mature would be no more than four inches long. The first break was usually made when a girl was three to five
years old, then the feet were wrapped in yards of cloth to prevent them from growing or reshaping. The pain from the initial break was nothing
compared to the enduring pain the women experienced for the rest of their lives. The pain was caused by the drastically deformed feet. (Chinese foot
binding– lotus shoes)
The deformed feet, also called golden lotuses were a status and beauty symbol for the women in China. A girl was unsuitable to marry if her feet were
not bound. Additionally, the feet became a sex symbol. Some Chinese pornography shows men becoming sexually aroused while fondling a woman's
"golden lotuses". (Chinese foot binding– lotus shoes)
Two lines following "the bound feet", Piercy writes "the hair in curlers". By incorporating this line Piercy comments on more modern and western
cultures. The way in which she delivers this line creates a

Why Is Artifice Important

  • 1. Why Is Artifice Important Artifice has been proven to be such an essential skill over the years and today according to Chris Hedge in his expert Empire of Illusion. Hedge brings up good points that are true about article in today's world however I disagree that it is the most essential skill. Hedge provides examples that include politics, entertainment, and advertisement. Artifice has been and still is used everyday where people either are aware of it or not. Artifice can be a good thing but only in certain circumstances and never 100% good. Trickery can be useful for companies wanting to sell products or entertainment. It helps actors, and especially politicians who need to gain support. To be able to make others believe in something that may not be true is an amazing skill to have but not the most essential as Hedge claims. A reason why artifice is not the most essential skill to have is because of the side effects that comes with it. In the end it is better if you are honest about things and try to find more positive things to gain support or money. It may be tempting to trick others especially if they are stubborn or strongly opposed you and your values but all together it will not work out and will not last. The most essential skill is not artifice because there are leaders that actually follow through with giving support... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are away multiple sides and to trick others into following you will only grant you short term success. Political leaders like Donald Trump promise certain things in their campaign that never follow through like his famous wall that will stop immigration. Yes he has tried to make a move but his promise did not keep up which can decline his support. When you trick someone they eventually will find out or maybe they will not but eventually they will have to disagree with you at some point. Artifice especially in politics will only get you so far as with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Artifice: Powerful Skill In Politics And Consumer Culture Success from artifice is often found in consumer culture; marketing experts working for businesses to manipulate the consumers thoughts to ultimately buy the product or service. Many marketing tactics use clever word choice or actions to manipulate an audience to think a certain way so the business can succeed by making profits. For example, the bait and switch tactic: a form of fraud in which an inferior product is advertised specifically to compel the consumer to buy a more expensive product. The business is successful because the consumer has been manipulated to think the inferior product is too cheap so there must be something wrong with it, so they buy the more expensive product which allows the business to make more money. In addition, Lucky Strike also manipulated the consumers in the 1920s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The company made ads depicting a person with a shadow of a fatter person to scare the consumer into buying Lucky Strike cigarettes to avoid weight gain. The fear tactics were very beneficial to the company since many were compelled to buy cigarettes to keep the weight off, making Lucky Strike more successful with the increase in sales. Artifice is used heavily in consumer culture to raise sales and has been effectively working for businesses. While artifice can seem as it is the most essential skill in politics and consumer culture, it is not as important as one might think in the long run. Overtime, artifice does not hold up. In consumer culture, artifice is usually revealed quickly; the revelation does more harm to the company's reputation than truth from the beginning would. In 2015, Volkswagen lost a great deal of profits and received a negative connotation to their reputation due to an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Artifice Research Paper Argumentative essay Nowadays the general public is fooled by the government and big companies through the art of artifice. Artifice is the art of deception, and in our consumer culture today, CEO and the higher ups use this art to sell their product and earn revenue. In the excerpt by Chris Hedges, talks about the political leaders who using deception to advertise and market their beliefs or products to give the audience a sense of faux intimacy. Though some might find this art quiet foul, I find it to be very interesting how the use of artifice can manipulate people to buy their business. The excerpt teaches that in a consumer culture, to sell a product, you will need to have mastered the art of deception, create a well thought out narrative to be able to sufficiently sell or succeed in the consumer culture of today.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the excerpt Chris Hedges says, "... to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be content or sincere, or honest." For example when selling a product, you can lie to your viewers about the product as long as the lie isn't obvious and the product still appears to be true and relative. In other words, this means when you sell a product and tell the audience the complete and honest truth, no matter how bad it is, this will scare your audience away, but when you sell a product and tell more lies than truth, you can somewhat curve the narrative and appeal to your audience. All this is important in a consumer because the best use of artifice will survive in the competition of marketing, though this is true there is another way to attract an audience willing to invest money into your product or ... • 4. The Importance Of Artifice In Elections When asked whether he learned anything as an actor that's been useful to his presidency, Ronald Reagan replied, " There have been times in this office when I've wondered how you can do the job if you hadn't been an actor." Politicians must employ methods of artifice and present themselves as an idealistic image of themselves in order to win elections. The recent election of 2016 shows that artifice is essential in winning voters. Donald Trump, throughout his campaign, displayed an image of himself that people would perceive as "tough" and "strong". The image of Trump as a reality TV star made him more likable by Americans. Trump spoke openly to people's economic stress, cultural fears and the disillusion with politicians. He promised to "bring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Marge Piercy's The Pampered Life Of Artifice The Pampered Life of a Bonsai What if beer was never invented? What would fraternities take pride in? What would they do in place of a keg stand? What would be the drink of choice for white dads across America? A world where my dad can be seen drinking a girly drink while admiring the freshly cut lawn is a humorous yet alarming possibility. This nightmarish thought would be reality without women. Research lead by historian Jane Peyton, supports the idea that women's specialty for millenniums was brewing beer. Although women are more to society than the keepers of the art of brewing, this is one startling difference that women have made on society. Women are capable of working hard, specializing in areas of expertise and intellectually competent. Marge Piercy would agree that women hold great potential, if not hindered by the harmful effects of misogyny and the patriarchal tendencies of society. Although to the untrained eye, "A Work of Artifice" may appear to be simply about bonsai trees, the poem actually uses an extended metaphor to emphasize... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Piercy uses precise language which highlights the destructive nature of misogyny, "but a gardener carefully pruned it (bonsai tree)," she uses a euphemism to describe the cutting of branches. Pruning is a process that involves the careful trimming of a plant for aesthetic purposes. The choice of euphemisms emphasize the ignorance of the gardener who believes his actions promote prosperity, although his efforts only stunt growth and damage the bonsai tree. The gardener also "whittles back the branches," which is another way that he damages the tree. Similarly, the women involved with the extended metaphor are handicapped by misogynists. Whittling happens to be another fancy word for harming, cutting, or debilitating a plant. The unintentional harm of the bonsai tree compares to the ignorance of misogynists and the harm they impose on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Artifice Analysis "The most essential skill in political theater and a consumer culture is artifice," said by Chris Hedges. Do we usually get lied to? Or are we really hearing the truth? In most cases, Politicians do lie, but that doesn't mean that they all do. If a Politician does lie, they usually get caught up in the act. Or in other words they get caught in a scandal.Artifice is a problem because it's a kind of way of tricking people. Such as involving lies, or "white lies," which is the truth, but not the whole truth. It is important because we, the people, deserve the right of the truth. No one likes to be played around by lying. People may think artifice is not an essential skill, but it is because without it we wouldn't listen to any other person's opinion for a right. Or in other words, some people don't know what they want, and they would rather listen to another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is the skill of artifice that helps them. They use a personal narrative. Yet sometimes their narrative is irrelevant from their actual life. The quality of lying, but yet make it seem like it is true, helps out on what a person wants. Such as a political speaker. "Political leaders, who use the tools of mas propaganda to create a sense of aux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest," which basically means that political speakers, or any kind of speaker, need certain skills to be able to get other people's attention. Without these skills, perhaps we wouldn't have the rights we have now, or other things. A way that a politician can use artifice is saying or "promising" something to their people, preferably their followers, then not completing what ever they said they would do. Suddenly the followers either get upset, and want to have a protest or forget about it. This all matters because many politicians can use artifice in many different ways. It's all up to the person on what they want to say. Also how they want to express ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. What Skills Is Artifice Analysis Hedges' argument that "the most essential skill... is artifice" can be true to an extent; however, there are other skills that are also essential in both political theater and consumer culture. These days, the first person many people think about after hearing the word "politics" is the current president of the United States of America, Donald Trump. People immediately think of him due to the fact that the 2016 presidential election was one of the most controversial elections in the past few decades. Many people either love and support Donald Trump or they hate and despise him. People could have such negative feelings toward him due to the fact that he has been caught "stretching the truth" and contradicting his own statements from the past ... • 8. The Disadvantages Of Artifice Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a society we are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and how individuals become "unreal" and "ignored" if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this "strategy" causes a never–ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced this year regarding the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other actors have been using artifice to keep their crimes a secret from the public. One of the most noteworthy examples is the accusations made against film executive and producer, Harvey Weinstein. Over eighty women have stepped forward to share their stories about his ... • 9. Analysis Of Marge Piercy's A Work Of Artifice "The United States Women's National Team is paid almost four times less than the United States Men's National Team, despite producing nearly $20 million in revenues for U.S. Soccer in 2015". Some may argue that just because they are women they don't deserve equal pay or the same rights as the men's soccer players. This is one of many situations that contributes injustices against women. It is these injustices that Marge Piercy exposes in her feminist poem "A Work of Artifice." Although to the untrained eye,"A Work of Artifice" may appear to be simply about bonsai trees, the poem actually uses an extended, implied metaphor or to emphasize the damaging effects of misogyny on women and to underscore the patriarchal ignorance that oppresses women.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Piercy compares men to a gardener, which outlines the damaging effects of patriarchy. For example, Piercy states," The gardener croons, it is your nature to be small and cozy, domestic and weak; how lucky, little tree, to have a pot to grow in." and how "attractive" the pot is. The gardener truly feels that he isn't doing any harm to the bonsai, that the plant is very lucky to have such a nice, attractive pot to live in. The gardener does not realize that he is doing more harm to the bonsai by not letting it grow to its full potential. Piercy then shows how the gardner manipulates the appearance or hinders the growth of the bonsai. She is making the relation as to how men treat women in present society. She then exemplifies her opinion of men being an inconsiderate, ignorant species that hinders a woman's potential to be succeed on her own and fulfill her own aspirations. Through her opinion, she then makes the connection that the pot and the bonsai refer to women only being a stay at home mom or in the kitchen cooking, are their only duty. By using an extended metaphor, Piercy explains her views as to how men are inconsiderate, ignorant and completely ruthless towards women because of the patriarchal society that is present ... • 10. Comparison Of Barbie Doll And A Work Of Artifice In two poems, the American poet, novelist, and social activist Marge Piercy addressed the seriousness of gender roles and oppression of women. She does so in her poems "Barbie Doll" and "A Work of Artifice." After examining them closely, the use of imagery and tone show two different outlooks on the topic. In the first poem, Marge shows that a woman changes herself, while in the second poem she writes that woman are changed forcefully. In each poem, we see immense vivid and powerful imagery. In "Barbie Doll" we see the entire life of a woman. It starts at a young age, where she plays with dolls and toy ovens, starting her confines of her role. • 11. Essay on Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice by Marge Piercy "A clever trick, crafty device, or stratagem" is how Webster's Encyclopedia of Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language defines Artifice. Marge Piercy definitely used "crafty" techniques in writing "A Work ofArtifice." In this poem, Piercy reflects on the growth of a bonsai tree, considering the molded existence of what it is to what it could have naturally been. With deeper analysis of this poem, the correlation between a bonsai tree and the shaped role of women within society becomes evident. The poet introduces one specific metaphor in the beginning, comparing the growth of a bonsai tree to the development of women. Another of Piercy's lines' is, "could have grown eighty feet tall on the side of a mountain till split by lightning." Again the reader is provided with detailed illustrations and sounds that correlate with the picture. In this line, for instance, a magnificent tree high above the skyline, destroyed both by a visual bolt of lightening and a booming crack of thunder can be seen. Examples of imagery are abundant throughout Piercy's entire poem. As readers look at the poem externally, the imagery is directly related to a vision of the bonsai tree. With further internal analysis, it becomes evident that there is slight ambiguity within these lines, lending themselves to have connotative meanings. In such a way, the sense–provoking images the writer includes relate not only to describing a bonsai tree, but also to explaining the role of women within society. Specifically, the double meanings of the imagery can be deciphered through examination of the writer's use of metaphors. Each of the descriptions about the bonsai tree can be applied to women. The poems "A Work Of Artifice" and "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy, demonstrates the ideology that society has about women in general. This two poems by Marge Piercy gives a perspective on how women have been treated throughout history and what a woman has to do in order to qualify to the expectations of society and be considered a "perfect women". "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy, the girl was "Healthy, tested intelligent, possessed strong arms and back."(7–8) this indicates that she was a normal girl, she was good, but she had a "Big nose and fat legs."(6) and that aspect made her imperfect. All the good things she had weren't important, only the imperfections were pointed out. As well as "A work of Artifice," Marge Piercy gives an image of women as someone weak. The author states that "The crippled brain, the hair in curlers." In this quote is evident the stereotype of a woman, a woman without a brain who needs to depend on someone else in order to think; she also needs to be pretty, and spend her time doing her hair to look gorgeous. Both of the poems were written in different time of period, "Barbie Doll" was written in 1971 and shows a clear idea that society doesn't think about how a comment can affect someone and when that person is dead, all their flaws go away. This can be seen when the author said, "With the undertaker's cosmetics painted on, a turned–up putty nose...doesn't she look pretty? Everyone said." When the character is laying down, death, everyone thinks she looks pretty, they don't find her any imperfection. Lastly, society's perspective hardly changed because "A work of Artifice" by Marge Piercy was written in 1999 and the theme is the same. The treatment of women throughout history is the ... Facades and fallacies have absorbed American politics and entertainment like vacuum of morality upon our society. The general argument made by author Chris Hedges, in his work Empire of Illusion is that he argues that "the most essential skill... is artifice." Artifice should be avoided but, that's the only way people can become successful in life. For instance, since people want to make money, they make fake advertisements about their products. A New Balance sneaker company was false advertising in claiming its toning walking shoes burns more calories and improved health. On the New Balance website, the company says its true balance toning sneaker, "uses hidden balance board technology that encourages muscle activation in the glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves, which makes you burns calories." Additionally, people say the sneakers, which cost $100, do not necessarily boost health benefits and may even lead to injury. • 15. Work Of Artifice The poem "A Work of Artifice" by Marge Piercy is easily interpreted as a metaphorical poem about the unfortunate yet accepted societal roles of women. Piercy depicts a bonsai tree that has the potential to grow tall and beautiful, but instead is neatly trimmed and kept in a small pot. She describes diminutive tree as being tamed by the gardener at his will. In the last stanza of her poem, Piercy writes that the bonsai tree has become "domestic and weak," with "bound feet" and a "crippled brain" (lines 14, 20, 21). The house, although beautiful, is institutional; the room the narrator's husband chooses is large and airy, but the great bed is nailed down and there are bars on the windows. Even the wall–paper itself is unsettling. The narrator describes its color as "repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow–turning sunlight" (Gilman, 957). Its pattern is brash and everlasting, "one of those sprawling flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin" (Gilman, 957). It is indecipherable, yet the narrator explains that she has made up her mind "for the thousandth time that [she] will follow that pointless pattern to some sort of conclusion" (Gilman, 960). Essentially, the wallpaper traps the narrator with its confusing and somewhat enchanting pattern, and it is this image that becomes important: for Gilman, society's repression of women is exactly as the wallpaper. It, too, is an indecipherable and repellent pattern, which confines women to their houses. Societal convention traps women behind its bars, just as the wallpaper trapped the ... Victor Frankenstein, the creature's creator, and the gardener, the bonsai tree's creator hold similar traits and characteristics as well. The theme of alienation and loneliness both present themselves in these pieces. The tree longs for freedom and to grow and stretch out as long as it wants to. "Could have grown eighty feet tall on the side of a mountain" (Piercy 3–4). This quote shows exactly the longing for growth upon it. "But a gardener carefully pruned it. It is nine inches high. Every day as he whittles back the branches the gardener croons, It is your nature to be small and cozy." (Piercy 6–13). Instead of the tree expanding out and growing to its full potential like it would like to do, the gardener cuts it down every day and prevents it from growing at all. The tree has to sit alone in a pot, and not prosper and thrive to be the biggest and tallest tree there it wants to be. This theme presents itself in Frankenstein also, "All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! A text, that pushed back against critics of the previous generation and endeavoured early on to integrate structuralist thought with post structuralist. This integration between structuralism and post–structuralism can be seen as an attempt to get at the importance of poetry. In an attempt to stress and illuminate poetry's unique ability to be "transformative of both language and the world." Forrest–Thomson in Poetic Artifice demands an intense focus on "all the rhythmic, phonetic, verbal and logical devices which makes poetry different from prose" to best consider this 'transformative' nature. It is in this distinguishing of poetry from prose, and the highly formalist manner and "structuralist distrust of language's transparency" in which she follows that one can also see a similar differencing between the broader spectrum of literature with the sciences. There is no need in Forrest–Thomson's work for differing areas to be inclusive of one another, to the point of loss of individuality, because of a homogenizing of methodology and epistemic reasoning. Throughout both Poetic Artifice and her thesis Poetry as Knowledge: The Use of Science by Twentieth Century Poets, Forest–Thomson can be seen to put forward a new structure, in which separation is crucial for any kind of interrelation between the two fields of knowledge. She then masterfully creates an extended metaphor between the life of a bonsai tree and the limited role forced upon women in her time. Piercy begins her poem by noting the loss of potential represented by the bonsai tree, sitting in a pot when it could have, and by all means should have, grown to be "eighty feet tall," and kept growing forever unless stopped "by lightning" or by some other force (lines 3&5). Donald Trump's Use Of Artifice In The Media "Political leaders who use the tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest." In the quote, Hedges is explaining who uses artifice and what they do with their power. Artifice is a skill that is difficult to maintain and keep realistic. Being the most essential skill, artifice is the art of deceiving. People's ideas and thoughts are altered for the gain of one and the loss of another. Everyone will need artifice at some point in their life to get the attention, item, or person they want. Specifically, our current President, Donald Trump, uses artifice all too much. He has exceeded his use of artifice. Trump won was because of his excellent use of artifice. He was able to persuade enough people to vote for him and his changes he would fulfill. Artifice takes quite skill to make believable for your audience. The importance of artifice during his ruling is immense, making it the most essential skill. Donald Trump is portrayed as a lying, evil individual in the media. Although we may not know the complete and total truth, we are able to identify that he is lying about something. For example, one of the very first things Trump had said to gather the attention of the audience would be about getting rid of all illegal immigrants. The author describes the making of a bonsai tree and explains the gardener's point of view on it as it is pruned and cared for by him. Bonsai trees are usually versions of a normal tree that are hindered in growth and kept miniature for the sole purpose of visual pleasure. They require regular pruning and an extensive amount of work by the gardener so they can grow properly. The Bonsai tree is tied into the poem extremely well by the author. If the tree would have been fortunate enough to grow up in the wild, it could have grown to the height of at least eighty feet tall and would have been on the side of a mountain where its roots could span the entire mountainside instead of only a few square inches inside of the bonsai pot. This description could easily be related back to a child being raised. A child could have easily had the potential to change the world; however, if they are not cared for in the right way and allowed to reach their own limits, they will be restricted and forced to be what their caretakers allow them to be. In the poem, the speaker uses a metaphor to compare the main character to a bonsai tree, in that they are both "trimmed" and kept from reaching their full potential. In the poem the main character is very similar to a bonsai tree in that they both are being held back and having their identities stolen and being forced to be something that they are not. The line about bound feet is an allusion to women in ancient china who would go through excruciating pain to bind their feet so they could be more attractive to men. Also, the speaker mentions that it must start early if you want to truly dwarf the growth of a bonsai, otherwise it could begin to become it's own tree. She said: "The unexpected role that I play in influencing my student's lives will probably help them remember how much common ground we share even though we are ethnically different." I agree and believe that women can be ethnically different yet still be very similar. There are different challenges and struggles within different cultures, however those struggles that women go through are universal struggles such as the transformation between childhood and teenage years (puberty and their menstrual cycles). They also go through harassment of all forms; for example, physical, mental and social harassment. These problems are universal problems for a woman to go through. It surprised me that she said that she does not feel upset nor angry by the lack of recognition that these Asian–American receive. Allusion and Metaphor in the Poems of Marge Piercy Although the poems "Barbie Doll" and "A Work of Artifice" both deal with the subject of women, Marge Piercy uses subtly different approaches in tone of voice, metaphorical style, and use of irony. While "Barbie Doll" uses the form of allusion to compare afemale child to a doll and demonstrates a strong tone of anger and irony, "A Work of Artifice" uses metaphor as a way to discuss the subject of women indirectly. Both poems succeed in making strong statements about the position of women in society and how they are constructed by society to serve others. In the first stanza of "Barbie Doll," Piercy refers to the child in the third person. She writes about how the young girl is socialized into acting like a girl, just like all the rest. She writes, "This girlchild was born as usual/ and presented dolls that did pee–pee/ and miniature GE stoves and irons/ and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy." (Piercy 1, 4). The use of artifice has changed the way we live our lives today, it just goes to show that it can be proven to be a very vital skill to wield. Some would hope that this was only a thing of the past and that it would not be a part of our lives. Unfortunately, this skill did not disappear over the years, but instead it has only begun to blossom into our present ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Importance Of Artifice In Society Although many people may like to think of America as a honest and moral nation, it is no secret that artifice has cemented itself as an indispensable skill, exploited by many to achieve their own ambitions. Artifice, characterized through the usage of cunning devices or expedients to deceive others, is often utilized by politicians and organizations to help push their own agendas. As illustrated by Chris Hedges in his social commentary, Empire of Illusion, "artifice" has emerged to become so ubiquitous and essential throughout American society, whether in business or the entertainment industry. Essential, in the essence that without it, people in any industry are more likely to be disadvantaged in achieving their personal goals. In today's modern world, no area has seen more abuse of artifice than in the field of media and politics. Its common knowledge that newspapers skew reports to their own biases and politicians often tell half–truths to cover–up ulterior motives. Unfortunately, these politicians and media giants hold extremely influential positions in society, and their usage of artifice is extremely damaging to the integrity and accountability within the United States. As a result, the press as well as the general populace must utilize free speech to expose this behavior. Despite the complete immorality of the usage of artifice, such chicanery remains essential for success in media and politics. Artifice generated through the media plays a pivotal role in the spread ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Lily’s Artifice and Mr. Ramsey's Work in To the... A Comparison of Lily's Artifice and Mr. Ramsey's Work in To the Lighthouse In Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, Mr. Ramsey's lone philosophical work is contrasted against Lily's encompassing paintings. Both Lily's and Mr. Ramsey's professions require sacrifices; Lily gives up the ideal marital life whereas Mr. Ramsey has his wife forfeit her happiness to restore his. Through his work, Mr. Ramsey is able to build himself up and look as though he is a strong male figure. Lily also finds strength within her artistry, rejecting the traditional "mother–woman" image and taking on an identity that is unique in her society. Mr. Ramsey's and Lily's process of thinking are particular to their work; a philosopher must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A female artist gives up society's forced vision of marriage in order to achieve ultimate individuality and freedom within her art. Lily is only able to part herself from this tradition by "gathering a desperate courage" (50) which would eventually "urge her own exemption from the universal law"(50). This "universal law" was the belief that women could only be whole and complete by having a male counterpart. Lily's rejection of marital life is a tragedy in Mrs. Ramsey's eyes; Mrs. Ramsey represents a consensus of society's beliefs and feels that "an unmarried woman has missed the best of life" (49). Mrs. Ramsey sees her as "cold and aloof and rather self–sufficing" (104), all of which are characteristics that women should not possess. Women are expected to be self–sacrificing and in a constant cheery mood so that they will uplift and provide contentment for their husbands. Her civilization looks down upon her for being an "independent little creature" (17) who "would never marry" (17). Lily is reduced to being "little" throughout the novel not because she was literally small, but because society saw her as insignificant and unproductive as a female artist. Only men were supposed to be the ones who could possibly handle a singular life. Mr. Ramsey defeats this image because he is weak and needs someone to be a martyr to his philosophical work. He needs others to validate his work. Once he has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Hedge's Use Of Artifice In Politics "The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who stand by and do nothing." – Albert Einstein Based on Hedge's iconic statement that "the most essential skill... is artifice", one can infer that politicians use narrative as a strategy to increase their following. This causes controversy among the audience who may only decide their candidate through a subliminal message therefore empathizing with the candidate rather than voting based on their intellect and opinions. While it may seem as regular propaganda, it is a tool to deceive the viewer. Although it may be a compelling strategy, artifice creates a barrier between the politician and the audience making the politician unable to connect with his followers. To begin with, the passage strikes at the qualities that define a politician. Hedges valiantly indicates that "...Political leaders no longer need to be competent, sincere or honest...." More specifically, the author writes that those are the only qualities they need, consequently... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Subsequently, Hedges adds "...The consistency and emotional appeal of the story are paramount..." thus emphasizing the importance of a personal narrative. Paramount meaning that the reactions are endless and will help the candidate obtain their goal because the opinion of the public is of utmost importance. In order to appeal to the public, convincing them to choose a leader must be gained through emotional manipulation. Pathological thinking is done often throughout this process as the candidates let the citizens hear what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. Essentially, the candidates will go to the ends of the earth to gain empathy from the audience because that is the key to winning as explained by Chris Hedges. • 34. Presenting Yourself As An Artifice Essay The passage suggests that leaders need to have a false relationship with their citizens in order to not become "unreal."To forget the true principles of being a leader is astonishing as there is no better way to be a leader than to possess the qualities of being competent and sincere. For generations it had been that way but now we're in different times and the way we view things have changed. The idea of presenting yourself as an artifice is a problem because people can no longer have an intimate relationship with their citizens as it no longer calls the their attention. A skill like artiface presents the people with a leader who is dubious and will not have veracity of plans that will steer his citizens in the right direction. It may be true that lying is fine in certain situations because it provides you an exit of a problem, but to have every situation as a fraud is a different case that subjects the people into a world that has no remedy for the damage dishonesty causes. To begin with, leaders who use artifice for their own benefit will result in the loss of trust from their citizens for they are portraying a distorted image that will guide them into downfall. • 35. Artifice In This Passage From The Empire Of Illusion By... Baseline Writing On behalf of this passage from the Empire of Illusion by Chris Hedges, his argument stated, is that "the most essential skill...is artifice". Artifice plays an important role in a variety of ways. In my opinion, I strongly agree alongside with Chris Hedges that the most essential skill is artifice in which case, plays a huge role in political theater and in a consumer culture. The variety of ways artifice can be used highly in mass propaganda, which will have either a positive or negative effect on the citizens. Although, some people may or not side to the circumstances of how artifice is use, it plays a great role in both political theater and in a consumer culture. • 36. Foreshadowing In Marge Piercy's A Work Of Artifice Looking at the title of Marge Piercy's "A Work of Artifice," readers can break it down and sense the foreshadowing. In the Oxford dictionary, "artifice" is defined as "clever or cunning devices or expedients, use to trick or deceive others." This foreshadows the deception that the writer exposes in the poem. Piercy describes a global dilemma the the use of metaphor (a bonsai tree). A bonsai tree is "an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size." Given the opportunity, this tree could grow to enormous heights. Yet, it is trimmed by gardeners'. This metaphor of the tree compared to women's suppression and the gardener as the suppressor. Women have been "bound" to "domestic" duties and Marge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Readers are introduced to a "bonsai tree in the attractive pot" in the first two lines. Here metaphor is established. The bonsai tree is being compared to the average woman. Like a bonsai tree, the average woman can become a distinguished figure and meet her full potential. For fear that the tree were to grow out of its pot, it may be alienated, it remains confined to its pot. A woman may feel inclined to stick to societal expectations for fear of being detached from others. Consequently, inside the pot, no woman or bonsai tree can grow to their fullest potential. Metaphorical use is also shown as Piercey compares the gardener to society. Continuously, society tries to mold women into being "domestic and weak." The gardener is shown doing this as he "carefully prunes" and "whittles back the branches." He is only declining the progression of the bonsai tree as he creates his own vision for it. In the attempt to be "attractive," the potential of the tree is taken and it continues to watch their branches be pruned and whittled away. Like this tree, women face the struggle to succeed in life while having societal inequities pinned on their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Why Do Politicians Use Artifice? Politicians will use artifice to convince the audience of their action, beliefs, and in some cases even mislead. Many major corporations and politicians use artifice to follow through with their intentions and plans. Artifice is an issue that is very controversial because it draws the line between integrity and a marketing strategy. On the flip side of the dilemma some narratives may be true to some extent but most of the time it is unlikely that they are not concocted and false. In accordance that artifice is the heart is the consumer culture, looking into today's society simple commercials demonstrate that aspect. For example commercials have influenced an image based culture where pictures are used to get the consumer's attention. In continuation with that actors may be photoshopped with drastic changes in weightloss. In agreement with Hedge's proposition of illusion,"tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest." • 38. Work Of Artifice In "A Work of Artifice," Marge Piercy describes how this bonsai tree has the potential to grow "eighty feet tall" in nature but is instead pruned so that it only grows up to "nine inches high." In my mind this probably is treating the tree as if it were a person and is describing how although people have the potential to grow and reach self–actualization but depending on what one grows up to be, one may or may not be able to actually reach that kind of sense of self. The title of the poem itself sets a rather satirical tone on the poem considering it is named "A Work of Artifice" which I found interesting because the "work" is basically how the bonsai tree is "carefully pruned" to only grow up to a certain height and the "artifice" is the fact that if the tree had been let grow alone in nature, like it's supposed to, it could have reached an incredible amount – "eighty feet tall." If the title had been different as in using the word "Art" instead, the suggested tone would have been perceived as being more positive rather than the deceptive ... Damage created by societal repression ranges from psychological damage to physical damage. The suppression of women is not only perpetrated by men, often other women support the cultural traditions which are damaging, as they themselves grew up within the confines of those social norms. Marge Piercy, a feminist activist, writer and poet makes a statement against social norms damaging to women with her poem, "A Work of Artifice". When coupled with the line "the bound feet" (Piercy, 20), the poem appears as if it were a comment solely about the injustice forced upon Chinese women from 934 until 1949. Foot binding is a painful process which includes breaking all of the toes and arch of the foot to grossly alter the shape of the foot, so that the foot, when mature would be no more than four inches long. The first break was usually made when a girl was three to five years old, then the feet were wrapped in yards of cloth to prevent them from growing or reshaping. The pain from the initial break was nothing compared to the enduring pain the women experienced for the rest of their lives. The pain was caused by the drastically deformed feet. (Chinese foot binding– lotus shoes) The deformed feet, also called golden lotuses were a status and beauty symbol for the women in China. A girl was unsuitable to marry if her feet were not bound. Additionally, the feet became a sex symbol. Some Chinese pornography shows men becoming sexually aroused while fondling a woman's "golden lotuses".
