Academic dishonesty or academic misconduct is any type of cheating that occurs in relation to a
formal academic exercise . It consist of any deliberate attempt to falsify,fabricate or otherwise to
tamper with data, information , records, or any other material that is relevant to students
participation in any course, laboratory, or other academic function. It also include any act, which is
designed to obtain fraudulently either for oneself or for someone else . High school students in
particular conveniently place the blame on others the school, teachers, parents or society

assignment for that particular instructor. Academic Dishonesty ranges from using part of someone

From there the teacher can decide the best course of action based on the reason provided, and if they
choose to push the case to the ethics board, an investigation will be conducted and a consequence
will be established. The ethics board only intervenes if the act is deemed serious by the instructor. If
this is the case, the instructor will present the case to the ethics board, and they will also notify the

Introduction: Strain plays a big role in academic dishonesty because the student feels like they can
not reach the goals that are set out for them within society or even within classes. Certain behaviors
from the individual or whom the individual is friends with can provoke or even support academic

We have all grown up learning that cheating in school would always come with consequences yet
many students continue to cheat. I do not find it surprising that students cheat in college or
university. McCabe, Trevino & Butterfield (2001) offer many explanations as in why students

be applied today I argue a new study should consider the use of technology in regards to academic
dishonesty. With the rise of technology, it has become much easier for students to cheat on exams

the Apple watch. The Apple watch can be seen as a watch; however, it is like having a miniature
phone on your wrist. The Apple watch makes it easier for students to conceal answers and cheat on

When I think of academic dishonesty I think of students cheating on exams or plagiarizing, but this
study failed to consider cheating completed over the Internet. If I were to search for a paper on

Students are attempting to justify their dishonest acts, and using many different justifications for
such acts. The most common justification for cheating behaviors is a lack of time and worry about

The first step in handling academic dishonesty issues is to determine if academic dishonesty really
took place. Faucher & Caves (2009) describe that academic dishonesty can be classified into three
primary domains including: 1) taking, giving, or receiving information from others; 2) use of
forbidden materials or information; 3) circumventing the process of assessment. In this
circumstance, the student may have committed two of the three domains. If the student used her
cellphone to text another person and asked him/her something about the exam, then she is receiving
information from others, which falls under the first domain. If she used her cellphone to look up for
answers on the internet or retrieve information she might have stored on her cellphone, then she is
using forbidden materials or information, which falls under the second domain. If indeed it is found
out that the student did use her cellphone to cheat on the exam, then disciplinary action must be
imposed, but it must be taken the legal way in order to protect the educator from any legal

Introduction: "Cheating's OK!" This line is most likely heard by many of us. Cheating is widespread
that even a Catholic Institution of St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) is not exempted to have
student cheating on exams. Cheaters only need to master the skills of cheating without actually
acquiring knowledge and skills measured by the test.
This led us to survey the most prevalent cheating strategy among Bachelor of Business

formal academic exercise." It is becoming a large epidemic that is hurting both students and
teachers. With the high pressure that our society puts on success is making students justify cheating
in order to get ahead. There any many forms of cheating that occur in a school setting. In this paper
we are going to focus on the history of academic dishonesty and the resouces that promote this type
of behavior. We will also look at the different types of academic dishonesty and what we can do as
educators to reduce the practices of cheating in our schools.
Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty has taken place in almost every type of educational
setting and has always been a part of education history. According to a website called

Most people believe that people will cheat just because they are a dishonest person. Although,
scientists have done studies that have shown that most people will cheat under the right situation. In
James Lang's article "How College Classes Encourage Cheating," Lang states, that 75 percent of
students have at least cheated once while attending college (1). Academic dishonesty is a growing
problem in college and there are many possible ways to fix it. My solutions are improving

code of integrity before the academic school year. The code of integrity is an agreement between the
student and the university to follow rules and promote academic honesty to make Grand View a
better place to be. The university then defines academic dishonesty as a misrepresentation of
personal efforts and honest work. This includes plagiarism, cheating, fabrication and facilitation of
dishonesty (65–66). For the first occurrence the student is under the discretion of the professor. A
second offense means that the student will be removed and failed from the course and they will also
be put on academic probation. After the third incident, the student will be suspended from the
university and the incident will be recorded on the transcript. Another offense will most likely be
expulsion from the university (67).
Solutions for Academic Dishonesty The first solution to help reduce academic dishonesty is to
implement honor codes and frequently revise them. In the journal Academe, by Donald McCabe and
Linda Klebe Trevino recognize the increase of academic dishonesty. McCabe and Trevino surveyed
2,200 students at 21 different universities. Nine of the universities did not have an honor code while
the others either had a tradition, hybrid, or a modified code. Of the universities who had modified
codes, 3 of them were large public universities. McCabe and Trevino thought cheating would be
more frequent at these institutions because of their size. McCabe and Trevino found that was not the

A reason top–performing students turn to cheating is because they are told grades are what matter
and they forget school is about learning. Learning is why students go to school and the importance
of learning should be emphasized over grades. "In a climate where they're told what really matters

43,000 high school students from both public schools and private schools and their results showed

the past year yet, what is even more surprising is that "34% self–reported doing it more than two
times" ("What is Plagiarism?", n.d). So not only are students guilty of cheating, some students are
