Gunther Pauli launched the Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives Foundation with the goal of producing all goods and services efficiently without any form of waste. Pauli shows a model for an unconventional brewery in Namibia that would eliminate waste completely. The brewing process produces large amounts of spent grain, but Pauli plans to treat the spent grain as a resource by growing mushrooms on it and introducing earthworms to produce chicken feed. All waste would be collected and processed to further eliminate waste from the system.

The Green Machine
Gunther Pauli and his Machine
1 Gunther Pauli is a new kind of innovator: the* social entrepreneur”. In
1996 he launched the Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives Foundation
(ZERI). The foundation’s goal is the efficient production of all goods and
services for the society without any form of waste- no liquid waste, no
gaseous waste and no solid waste. This goal is the basis of a new Zero
Emissions production and consumption model. This model imitates
nature: the output from one becomes the input for another. It´s more
competitive and more productive without destroying the ecosystem.
2 Pauli shows his computer model of the world’s most unconventional
brewery in Naimibia , Africa. “it’s a small plant , but we’re going to
generate more sales and we’re going to create more Jobs. We’re going to
use everything and eliminate waste completely.” He declares. “the
brewing process wastes massive amounts of water-”
In japan it takes 10 litres of water to brew one litre of beer. Brewing also
requires huge supplies of grain, and the fermentation process extracts
only 8 % of its nutrients. 26 % of the rest is pure protein. Are we going to
waste those resources?
3”we’re not going to treat the spet grain as waste. What are we going to
do? We ‘re going to treat it as a resourse.” We’re going to grow
mushrooms on it . so . in addition to selling beer, we ‘re going to sell
mushrooms.
2. we’re also going to extract the protein from the grain. How we’re going
to introduce earthworms into the grain and Then we’re going to get
chicken feed. We’re going to produce lots of it and sell it”.
4 “Now, we’ve got mushrooms, chicken feed and chickens ,Which of
course create their own waste. We’re going to collect that waste and put
it in a machine we call “digester”, then … but it’s a very long story. Look at
this graphics and see how it Works.
