Mission Impossible 3

Trailer Analysis

What do the lighting; colour; camera work; editing and sound tell the audience
about Mission Impossible III? How effective is the trailer in persuading the
viewer to see the film?

This shot is showing the whole of
the city and where the rest of the
film will be taking place etc. The
shot that has been used is called
an establishing shot. Also it could
mean that a point of view shot may
                                           have been used because it
suggests that a helicopter is looking
down on the city, so it could be
someone’s point of view.

This shot is an extreme close up
from a zoom; it shows that he is a
                                           spy because of the modern
gadgets. For example the red laser
scanning his eye connotes that he
is possibly a spy. This shows that
this could be a spy genre film. This
tells the audience that this film is
going to be spy based also the
mise-en-scene that are used may suggest this.
This is a high angle shot which
comes from an establishing shot,
this shows that the camera is
focused on the character therefore
it shows that action is going to
happen and it is going to involve
this character.
The sound that is used throughout the trailer is very echoing and quite scary
sounds, this again makes the film look very spy like.
Throughout the whole of the trailer there are a lot of sound mixes are used.
Everything happens at once, the music and the scenes are all happening
together. When he has no expression on his face there is no sound and the
whole screen is silent.
Ambient sounds are used are used with the explosions and the aeroplanes
etc, this shows that the film is full of action and it makes the audience want to
see more.
The dialogue shows that it is not really a very pleasant film, the way that they
are speaking to each other shows that something bad is going to happen.
Digetic sounds are used when the explosions are going off. Also the
soundtrack gives us a short insight as to what the film could be about.

At the start low key colours are used and then eventually it changes to high
key colours, this makes the audience watch in suspense as they are un sure
to what might happen, all the action changes when the colours change to high
key colours. The red colours used connotes blood and shows that there is
danger and injuries etc. Black and white colours are also used, this shows the
dullness of the film, its connotes that the city is just a normal dull city and it
shows that nothing could happen. Then yellow and gold colours are used this
shows that there’s fire and explosion, it shows the audience that these spies
are in danger. The beeping sound that is used sounds like a heartbeat and is
a non-diegetic sound it gives the audience an adrenalin rush and it may
makes them a little bit scared as they don’t know what to expect.

The editing that is used is very effective and it helps in persuading the viewer
to see the film. A cross-cutting is used when the main character is running
and it is cutting across to the man on the phone, its shows that something is
going to happen between the two characters.
Above shows fading used throughout the trailer. The fading into different
scenes are very long fades, this gives the audience suspense. The black
screens stay on the screen for about 2seconds. Then we get text on screen
this shows the audience so that we know when the film will be coming out.
The dissolves build up tension its as if they are making you wait for the good
bits.
When the main character is jumping over the car he jumps over it in slow
motion this emphasizes the danger that he might not make it to the other side,
this makes the character watch in shock as they watch him get to the other
side, dead or alive.
The trailer shows that people’s life’s are all at risk throughout the film.
