Virgin Mobile Harvard Case
STUDENT: | Louis–Claude ROUX | PROFESSOR: | Philippe René Gillet | CASE: Virgin Mobile
USA "Pricing for the first time" | DATE: 20/02/2012CLASS: MBS–Entrepreneuriat | PART I)
ANSWERS BASED ON MY "GUT FEELINGS" Virgin Mobile targets the 14 to 24–year–olds
market. The case lays out three pricing options. Which option would you choose and why? I would
go for option number two for several reasons. The first one is that I think offer number one is not
sufficiently different from the rest of the market. The price positioning is the same and we only get
better off peak hours, supposedly "fewer hidden fees" and applications. Virgin Xtras is a creative
idea and definitely suits Virgin's image and targeted young audience, however I ... Show more

It feels like an inquisition for the customer, affecting in a very bad way the purchasing experience.
The buckets of minutes might have been a confusing notion at first, however everybody understands
what it is now. The industry had to find a common standard to compare the offers and that is what
buckets help doing. I think the buckets are visual and graphically clear enough to make the offers
more attractive and easy to comprehend. The hidden fees are a true enemy to the consumer
experience! Even when you think you have understood everything, there are extras "coming out of
nowhere" spoiling the whole experience. That is part of the reason why we always feel like the
phone operators are cheating on us. Regarding the on peak/off peak distinction, I think it is a
powerful argument. Most people understand what it is and the fact that we can have unlimited time
on off peak hours is a must have for every operator today. Just like with the buckets, it might add a
complexity at first, but it is something that the customer has understood and therefore we speak the
same vocabulary. The big problem that ruins the consumer experience is the addition of these
variables. Indeed, you need to compare all of them between different carriers to find the better deal.
I would also add to these variables the price of the actual mobile phone with the

Netflix Vs. Netflix, Hulu, And Hulu
By the end of 2017, over 15.4 million people in the US will cut their cable. Who can blame them?
Cable hasn't evolved in last 10 years and cable is becoming increasingly more expensive annually.
Nevertheless, several individuals are still paying for cable, when we have streaming services like
Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Streaming services are a superior alternative to cable because they are
cost–effective, more accessible, interactive, and uses an advanced algorithm to learn about the
viewer, and they don't have any commercials. Streaming services cost consumers about $12 a
month, including taxes and other fees. In contrast, cable cost my family approximately $130 per

Streaming services platforms are much more interactive compared to cable. The viewer can pause,
rewind or fast forward through the content; viewers can change the language if they demand. The
streaming services' video player remembers the exact time the viewer stopped watching, so the
viewer can resume their program from where they were left off. Also, Consumers have the freedom
to watch anything from the streaming services diverse content catalog, and they can rate and write a
review of the shows and movies. Also, consumers can conserve their favorite shows and movies in
my list section to watch it later. "Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon also offer far more than cable does.
People can watch a wide variety of movies, from comedies to documentaries, which may never air
on the TV. Netflix subscribers can also choose among a range of different TV shows as many times
as they want, even if it has been taken off the original channel it aired on" (Binge or Bust? Netflix
Vs. Cable TV 1). Streaming services use an advanced algorithm. This algorithm collects data from
the viewers to learn about viewer's interest. As an example, let say the viewer just watched a
comedy movie and if the viewer gives the movie a positive rating, this algorithm will remember that
and in the future, it will suggest the same kinds of movies to the viewer. This same algorithm helped
Netflix create their original hit series House of Cards. In the

Stereotypes Of Hispanic Women
"Yes, I'm blonde. When I started as an actor, because of the accent and my body and my personality,
it was not what the stereotype of the Latina woman in Hollywood is, so they didn't know where to
put me. The blond hair wasn't matching. The moment I put my hair dark, it was better for my work"
(Vergara). The media tends to portray stereotypes of many different people without warnings. So,
when people watch TV or listen to the radio all they get are the generalizations of these different
people. One group that has been highly stereotyped and somewhat portrayed in the media are
Hispanic women. How the media portrays Hispanic women is based on both gender and racial
stereotypes (Correa, 2010). This portrayal of Hispanic women impacts people in many ways. Sofia
Vergara's quote that was stated above is an example of the impact these stereotypes caused; it was
hard for Sofia Vergara to get a job because she didn't look like the stereotypical Hispanic woman
and the media continues to portray Hispanic women as such. One of the largest influences on the
roles Hispanic women are expected to play is the media's portrayal of them. The media portrays
Hispanic women by generalizations of how they look, how they act, and how they identify their
values.
Before getting into how the media portrays Hispanic women, there must be a clear outlook on the
fact that there is very little representation of Hispanics in the US media. This has a large influence
on how people in the US view Hispanics.

Components Of The Tablet / E Reader Market
1. Three important consumer segments in the tablet/e–reader market are as follows:
College students and/or graduates
People in professional and related occupations
People with children ages 6–11
I've identified these segments based on the following data:
Segment
Percent of people who have tablets/e–readers in the segment (Percent down)
Index
Explanation of Index
College students and/or graduates
19.2% (current students), 49% (graduates), total=68.2%

The relative proportion of college students who own tablets is exactly proportionate to their relative
population in the country.
The relative proportion of college graduates who own tables is far higher than their relative
population in the country. This means they are very overrepresented as tablet owners.
People in professional and related occupations

Netflix : Delivering Value Through Innovation
Netflix: Delivering Value through Innovation Netflix, "the company that revolutionized watching of
movies and TV shows (Netflix Media Center, n.d.)" began in 1997 with CEO Reed Hastings
creating an online based DVD subscription service. It quickly became a success through its low
cost, fast delivery times and proprietary queue. The company went public in 2002 and continued to
expand its membership and in 2007 introduced its online streaming service. Netflix currently boasts,
"over 81 million members in over 190 countries enjoying more than 125 million hours of TV shows
and movies per day, including original series, documentaries and feature films (Netflix Media
Center n.d.)". Netflix's core competency is to deliver high quality, diverse entertainment directly to
the consumer. In the beginning this meant not having to travel to your local video store
(Blockbuster) and hoping that the store had the movie that the customer wanted. Netflix removed
this from the customer's routine, by mailing the latest DVDs directly to their door. Now, Netflix and
its streaming based subscription allow the consumer to watch their choice of over thousands of
programs anytime, anywhere, as many times as you want. The value proposition is the, "set of
beliefs or values it (the company) promises to deliver to consumers to satisfy their needs (Armstrong
& Kotler, 2013)". Netflix promises to deliver their diverse and ever expanding content library to the
consumer for a set monthly fee. Netflix builds

Hamlet's Relationship With Ophelia
Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia
Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship was like a roller coaster because one minute they seemed like
they loved each other and the next it seemed like they didn't .
When Ophelia's father found out that Ophelia was talking to Hamlet he warned her to stay away
from him because he thought he knew Hamlet and thought that Hamlet would break her heart .
Ophelia always honored what ever her father said and so when he told her that ,she listened and
obeyed .
In Act 1 Scene 3 Polonis / Ophelia's father states" Do not believe his vows , for they are for brokers.
Not of that dye which their investments show , but mere implorators of unholy suits ,breathing like
sanctified and plous bawds." This quote shows that since her father didn't believe Hamlet was the

Marketing Is All About Creating Value.
MARKETING IS ALL ABOUT CREATING VALUE. USING BOTH CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND
PRACTICAL EXAMPLES, EXAMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH CREATING VALUE TO
CUSTOMERS AND TO THE FIRM ARE AN INTRINSIC PART OF MARKETING TODAY.
Different people have defined marketing differently. On the face of it, it may be thought of as the
process by which an organisation reaches out to the consumers with the products or services that it
has to offer in order to make profits. If we dwell deeper, it 's worth mentioning that marketing
strategies have evolved immensely over decades. The organisations in the present day care as much
for creating value for customers as they do for increasing their profits. In fact, it has been largely
accepted that both these things are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking at it as a company and the products they offer, it is evident that Virgin Media cater to
households and businesses with multiple users at one time which requires extremely high speed
broadband services with unlimited downloads. Hence, knowing their consumers and being focused
on them is how the company is creating value for itself in the first place.
Virgin Media creating value for customers:
In March 2011, Virgin Media announced the release of it 's TiVo Box which would revolutionize the
TV viewing experience. This box has the ability to store 500 hours of standard TV recordings along
with allowing customers to record 3 shows together at any point of time. (Virgin Media UK 2012)
Thus, creating value for customers by innovation.
According to the Office of National Statistics, "In 2012, 21 million households in Great Britain (80
per cent) had internet access, compared with 19 million (77 per cent) in 2011." A growth of 7.1
million has been seen since 2006 in which year only 60 per cent of the households had some form of
internet access. (ONS. 2012) With this exponentially growing need for internet access with greater
demand for speed, in April 2012 Virgin Media announced in a marketing campaign that it 's 4
million broadband customers would soon receive double the existing speed. Keeping in mind that
Virgin Media are the only optic fiber network in the UK already of providing 4 times the average
broadband speed in the UK at 30 mbps. (

Virgin Australia Essay
There have been many branches of the Virgin Empire that have formed over the years. Many have
brought continued success to the Virgin Group, while others have struggled and failed. Virgin
Atlantic Airways was launched in 1984, Virgin Mobile (cellular) in 1999, and Virgin Blue (airline)
in Australia (now named Virgin Australia) in 2000. Branson wrote in his autobiography of the
decision to start an airline: My interest in life comes from setting myself huge, apparently
unachievable challenges and trying to rise above them ... from the perspective of wanting to live life
to the full, I felt that I had to attempt it. (Branson, 2007) Branson started Virgin Express in 1996 by
acquiring Euro Belgian Airlines, a short–haul airline. Ten years later Virgin Express merged with SN
Brussels Airlines to form Brussels Airlines. At this time Branson and Virgin expanded their airline
branch into Nigeria (Virgin Nigeria) and America (Virgin America). (About Us: Virgin, 2015) With
the success of Virgin Airways, there was undoubtedly going to be some disagreements from their
competitors. One such instance was with British Airways in the early 1990's, which viewed Virgin
as an emerging competitor. After a fairly lengthy legal battle in which Virgin accused British

The Impact Of Fiscal And Monetary Policy On Business...
Introduction
The environment is defined as the sum total of all surroundings of a living organism, including
natural forces and other living things, which provide conditions for development and growth as well
as of danger and damage.(Business dictionary,2014) This means that every business always meets
dangers and damage in a different environment, especially, in an unstable environment. For
example, Malaysian Airlines have endured financial problems by an aircraft crash, which result in
Malaysian Airplane losing 10 million dollars for paying compensation to victim families. This
incident demonstrates the environment has always changed , sometimes it could be a good
opportunities to develop the businesses or great disasters to damage it. This essay will discusses the
changing factors of business environments in detail , following by the sections:how economic

The principles of economy indicates the essential of economic problems:

Lorraine Hansberry 's A Raisin
The play "A Raisin in the Sun", by Lorraine Hansberry, takes place in a small apartment on the
south side of Chicago. The south side of Chicago at the time was a very poverty stricken
neighborhood at a time where there was still a lot of racial tension. The Younger family occupied the
small apartment on the south side of Chicago. Lena Younger the mother of the family, and Big
Walter had moved into the apartment after getting married, in the hopes of moving into a house after
one year. Mamas' hopes of owning a home soon faded since times were so hard. After the death of
her husband Lena Younger received a check from his insurance for ten– thousand dollars. The
thought of having that much money started to tear the family apart over what to do with it. Living in
the south side of Chicago was a dangerous place, and the Youngers felt like it was a way out of the
poor neighborhood. Lena Younger looked at the money as a chance to get the house she always
wanted, and something that she would be able to pass down on to the next generations. Many would
argue that mama Lena was being hard on her children by forcing what she wanted and her beliefs on
the family. I argue that Lena Younger only wanted what was best for her family by showing it
through her love for her family, her religious ways, and her determination to give her family a better
life. The love that Lena Younger have for her children is unexplainable. Her children are basically
her life. She refers to them as her

The price could also discourage anyone under 30, with this market using their disposable income on

Brand Attributes
When customers are comparing Sky to its competitors they must compare specific attributes that

others will focus more on the price, or maybe on the brand name (Riezebos. R, 2003).

Policy Problem The recent Canadian Radio–television and Telecommunications (CRTC) (2013c)
'Broadcasting Regulatory Policy on the Distribution of Canadian Category C national news

programming in Canada. This policy is a response to Canadians' concerns over consumer choice due
to program bundling and an inability to select news and sports programs on a stand–alone basis

Furthermore, the CRTC (2014) initiated 'Let's Talk TV' in October 2013, which enabled a discussion
between the regulatory body and Canadians to share their views on current regulations in
broadcasting and the future of television packaging in Canada. The subsequent report of 'Let's Talk
TV' outlined the concerns and satisfactions of the Canadian public. In late 2013, the CRTC (2013c)
ruled that Category C national news services should be offered by all broadcasting providers in an
effort to remove regulatory restrictions for new entrants, increase competition in this sector and to
enhance consumer choice.
Issues and Implications The CRTC (2013c) identified five categories that this policy addressed: the
necessity of offering all marketable news services, news neighbourhoods, packaging requirements,
filing affiliation agreements and resolution strategies in negotiation rates and set an implementation
period. The Commission ruled in favour of offering all news services to Canadian cable subscribers,
against requiring that broadcasting distribution undertakings (BDUs) categorize similar
programming into news neighbourhoods, against requiring packaged or bundled services and has
permitted continued commercial negotiations instead of CRTC mediated negotiations. By March 19,
2014, all BDUs are required to satisfy the must–offer provision of this policy; all other arrangements

relatively small number of shareholders or company members which does not offer or trade its

Private companies are very similar to independent companies; the only real difference is that private
companies can choose their shareholders. Private companies don't need to meet the strict exchange

their income to the government.
Independent companies are companies which work on their own; they can make decision on their

different to subsidiaries as Independent companies are not owned by any conglomerate. An
advantage of an independent company is that all the money the company makes is its own profit

that they often find it difficult to survive against competition from bigger companies that are owned

Virgin Media
Virgin Media
Virgin Media began trading in early 2007, as a result of a merger between cable operator
NTL:Telewest, and acquisitions of the VirginNet internet service provider, and Virgin Mobile. At
launch, the new company heralded itself as being the first single provider of ‘quad–play' (four–
service) media in the UK. It has a strong marketing campaign and its broadband service in particular
is popular with British customers, with the second – largest subscriber base in the United Kingdom.
Product
Virgin Media's products are predominantly intangible services. The company's product range

solutions. From the company's beginnings as two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, when a customer joins on a new broadband package, Virgin will provide them with a
modem capable of connecting their computer to the network. When a television service is selected, a
suitable set top box is supplied. These services are subject to an installation fee, where a trained
engineer will come to the customers home to oversee a smooth setting up of the facility.
The company operates a number of call centres to deal with customer enquiries. These act as a first
point of contact for any customer calling into Virgin Media. The call centres are located around the
country, in areas such as Manchester, Sheffield and Birmingham. Virgin Media also utilises
outsourced contact centres from out with the UK. However, this can be a bad idea for a business
from a public relations point–of–view. Customers find themselves increasingly vexed with getting
put through to foreign call centres, and more and more companies are making the shift back to UK–
based centres as it can be used as a selling point.
Promotion
The business is very heavily promoted, through all forms of media, including press, billboards,
magazine inserts, British TV and the internet. The firm capitalises on the distinctive Virgin logo,
which is familiar to the British public due to the variety of other products and services offered by the
Virgin Group.

Threat of Substitutes – Weak o There are very few substitutes available that offer mobile and

Stanhope's Relationship with Raleigh in Journey's End
Write about the presentation of Stanhope's relationship with Raleigh in Act Two Scene One, Act
Three Scene Two and Act Three Scene Three.
Journey's end by R.C.Sherriff is an incredible play about how the horrifying conditions in W.W.I
affected men physically and psychologically. The audience really feel for the soldiers as the author
has made the concept of the war so emotionally involving for the reader. The main character is
called Dennis Stanhope, and another attention–grabbing character is Jimmy Raleigh. R.C.Sherriff

Stanhope assumes he has written about his drinking habits in, and he actually tries to censor his

Stanhope agrees so he must trust Osbourne a lot to let him do that. Osbourne reads the letter, and so
Stanhope finds out that the letter is the complete opposite and is full or praise about him. "He looks
tired, but that's because he works so frightfully hard, and because of the responsibilities, a sergeant
told me that...........Dennis is the finest solder in the battalion and the men simply love him".
Stanhope felt guilty and stupid for mistrusting Raleigh. Raleigh annoys Stanhope when Stanhope is
asking Raleigh for the letter he has written home to his sister Raleigh doesn't want to give it to him
and he says its private, Stanhope immediately thinks that Raleigh has written something bad about
him but the real reason Raleigh doesn't want him to read it is because most of the letter is praise that
isn't true, he sounds like a little school boy how he has said it. The author's intention of this scene is
to show the point to the audience that you sometimes get the wrong perception of something. The

Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group has been a household name in the United Kingdom
for over twenty years. He is well respected in the business world. He is the founder of the Virgin

many more. "Branson is also known for his unique character and leadership styles, one who is not

They show customers and employees what our business stands for, and often inspire our teams at
other businesses to try new challenges. Another way Branson keeps employees engaged is by
inviting them to take part in company events, like the Virgin Mobile Live Free fest, a free music
festival held every year to raise money (through donations) for homeless young people. Along with
giving employees a chance to give something back to the community, the festival allows an
opportunity to say thank you to customers and staff by providing them with the chance to enjoy
themselves for free. The sense of fun unites the businesses reminds employees of what the company
stands for. In some ways it's easier for a large organization like Virgin to embark on such projects,
but with a little inventiveness and resourceful thinking, other business owners might come up with
shot–in–the–arm schemes of their own (Entrepreneur, 2012). Maintaining a focused and motivated
staff can be a difficult task for employers to master, especially during harsh economic times and
with stretched resources. Branson recently held a series of talks for employees, where they were
encouraged to engage and debate different subjects. The exercises were held on a tropical island in
the Caribbean. Every company does not have the luxury of taking their employees off to a tropical

As The Attitudes Of American Households Begin To Shift,
As the attitudes of American households begin to shift, the FCC should enact a new regulation to
best fit the changing viewership of consumers. At its simplest form, this new rule would allow
television consumers to have the option to pick and choose the individual television channels they
desire to pay for, instead of having to pay for an entire cable "package", while still including the
"basic" cable service. Essentially, this new regulation would force cable TV providers to allow the
option for an à la carte pricing rate for expanded cable television services. While the proposed rule
would make cable providers "deviate from 'market–driven' logic," the overall effects of it would
alter the medium of television for the better. (Lotz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 1992 act subjected cable rates to regulation under most circumstances excluding cable systems
that were "subject to effective competition." (Public Access Awareness Association) Also, it allowed
the FCC to regulate rates for other service tiers if they found that a cable system's rates were
"unreasonable under FCC regulation." (McCarthy)
Nevertheless, the 1992 act was followed by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. During this time,
"shifting cable policies and deregulation of ownership had massive implications for the industry's
operation" (Lotz 52) Thus, because of its intent to create a competitive market, the FCC was no
longer able to regulate the rates for non–basic service tiers. According to the FCC, "basic" cable
service rates may be regulated by local franchising authorities such as the city, county or other
governmental organizations, but are not required to do so. On the other hand, "the rates you pay for
other cable programming and services, such as expanded cable channel packages, premium movie
channels and pay–per–view sports events, are set by your cable TV provider." (FCC) So, in
actuality, the FCC still does not regulate any rates charged by cable providers, thereby giving them
the monopolistic power of rate regulation and overall ability to engage in rate inflation.
Although the FCC has attempted numerous deregulatory/regulatory measures, it still has not

INTRODUCTION
Finding new and innovative ways of handling existing problems has never been easier or more
frequent than today. New technological concepts seem to be coming to light on what seems a daily
basis. With this being said, sometimes it is easier to solve existing problems with existing solutions
rather than finding new ones. When is it acceptable for companies, or even governments, to innovate
to find a solution rather than replace with existing technologies? For example, if a company is
increasing its LAN infrastructure would it be best to invest in new or less expensive technologies
even if they are untested, or to replace with more expensive but reliable technologies. This is a
question that could be asked by someone deciding on a home computer, to NASA deciding the best
way to launch rockets into space.
Research Background

Fiber optic cable is not a new form of technology. It allows for larger amounts of data to be
transferred at a rate much higher than traditional copper cable. This is the main appeal to fiber optic
technologies. This being said, it is very expensive to replace current mediums with fiber optic
infrastructure. In the Bloomberg article, "Will Not–Quite–Fiber Make the Grade?", BT has realized
that there is a sector of the United Kingdom's market that wants the ability to transfer larger amounts

Case Analysis : Bet Holdings, Llc, Inc. Essay
BET Holdings, LLC, founded in 1990, began with a simple mission: to become the preeminent
media company serving black consumers, and through the fulfilment of this mission, to create
substantial value for its shareholders. Founded by Robert L. Johnson, former press secretary to
congressional delegate Walter E. Fauntroy, and vice–president of government relations for the
National Cable Television Association (NCTA), the Washington, DC based corporation used the
contacts and available source information on the emerging cable television industry, and inspiration
gathered on a fortuitous shared taxi ride to set the mission in motion.
After viewing a proposal shared by his fellow passenger, and discussing the possibility of a cable
channel dedicated to American senior citizens, Johnson envisioned a different model of the same
programming application. Reasoning that the national African American population offered a
multibillion–dollar consumer market, Johnson saw lucrative potential. As quoted in Forbes, Johnson
believed that "The idea for BET was not conceived out of idealism, but as a business opportunity
that had been ignored." With permission from his fellow passenger, Johnson built his own proposal,
and used it to secure a $15,000 loan from a Washington bank, and launched Black Entertainment
Television with the planned hope of making his venture profitable within three years.
At the time of this launch, expectations for the cable industry itself were high: with many rural

Swot Analysis Of Netflix
Due to the company's high dependence on the cost of content licensing and relationships with
content providers, the company is vulnerable at many levels.
Netflix suffers low profit margins due to the cost of international expansion and currency
fluctuations.
Netflix faces tough competition with companies that broadcast live, unique and free content through
torrents and cable television.
Unlike its competitors – Hulu and Amazon, Netflix does not generate income through
advertisements.
At an international level, the dependence on laws and regulations of different countries is an
obstacle to the company's potential growth.
Netflix's high dependence on internet connectivity makes it difficult to gain popularity in many parts
of Asia and Africa, where internet connectivity is not well established.
Domestic providers tend to produce or broadcast series that are designed to match the customer's
needs. This can be challenging for Netflix to match.
Its dependence on the regulations and laws of different countries is a hinderance to Netflix's
international expansion. For example, in spite of China's attractive market with a massive
broadband–capable population, it was very difficult for Netflix to operate due to strict regulations on
the country's media and entertainment industries. https://www.cayenneapps.com/swot–

The increasing conformity between personal interest and business initiatives could be discerned in
the establishment of Virgin Fuels. In discussing his efforts to establish a 'green' fuel company in
competition with the oil industry Branson made the geopolitical observation that non–oil–based
fuels could 'avoid another Middle East war one day'; Branson's opposition to the Second Gulf War is
well publicised.5 In some instances the relationship between personal conviction and business
interests is less clear cut. Branson's comments on the threat to British democracy posed by
NewsCorp's ownership of such a large percentage of the British media could be depicted as either
genuine concern from a public figure or sour grapes from a business rival just been beaten out of
purchasing ITV. More recently Branson has been reported as talking about withdrawing from the

The Physical Portrayals Of Hispanic Women In The Media
The physical portrayal of Hispanic women in the media has a large influence on the Hispanic
women and girls that view these portrayals. The media's physical portrayal of Hispanic women is
that they are voluptuous, dark–haired, tanned skin, and petite. There are many films, TV shows, and
any other media outlets that portray Hispanic women as such. Examples of these portrayals are
"Modern Family," "Maid in Manhattan," and "Girl in Progress." In each of these movies or shows,
the main character appears as the stereotypical Hispanic woman. This is what many Hispanic
women and girls believe that the world sees them as. They also believe that this is how they should
look. This especially affects adolescent girls that identify as Hispanic. "media use may play a role in
the body image development of Latina adolescents" (Schooler, 2008, p. 134). Most of the time when
watching television, Latinas see a white woman and their beauty standards. The difference between
white women in the media as opposed to Latin women is that there is a greater variety of how white
women in the U.S. look. When a Latina finally sees someone who is Latina, they expect to see
themselves, instead, they see Eva Mendes, long wavy hair, curvy, and petite. When young Latin
women see this, they expect themselves to be the same way. If they don't look like that, it can result
in a spoiled body image of themselves. "Latina women in this sample tended to hold the lowest
perceptions of their bodies, the highest awareness of Consumerism as a factor in the body/beauty
standard, and scored high in racial identification" (Poran, 2002, p. 79) Latin women understand who
they are and when someone is of the same background. Many are also self–conscious about their
bodies, and that is likely due to the fact that not only are actresses on TV shows thin and curvy, but
many commercials are about the newest way to lose weight rapidly, or what to buy to get curves. All
women of any race have issues with body Image, but as a Latina, the media plays a big role in how
Latinas form their body image.
According to the media's portrayal of Latin women, there are two ways Latin women act. The first
way is passive, pure, and dependent on men; the second way is wild,

The World Is Not A Stagnant Entity
INFORMATION
The world is not a stagnant entity. It's in a constant stage of growth and development. It's now
crucial for companies to be able to adapt and change to keep up with new technologies and
developments. Strong, but malleable, business strategies in both diversification and innovation will
help any company to keep up with competitors, customer demand, and trends. While a company
needs to be able to adjust and grow, these strategies cannot be set in stone. Refusal to change
actually hinders the capacity to innovate and diversify product lines, marketing, pricing models, and
development. A key factor to recognize is that expansion and diversification are not the same. For

An innovation strategy encourages development, improvement, and expansion of technologies,
products, or services. There are two main strategies in innovation: sustaining innovation and
disruptive innovation. These innovative strategies allow for growth and new opportunities that
competitors don't have. Innovation often involves research and development activities to create the
competitive advantage. The strategy can allow new or smaller businesses to become a threat to
larger corporations; it also allows for growth and expansion of a company.
In a world of increased global competition and weaker economies, it can be hard to stay afloat and
relevant. In implementing diversification and innovation strategies, a company can achieve a
competitive advantage and become profitable in our ever–changing and developing world.
THEORIES OR MODELS
I. Concentric Diversification
Concentric diversification is similar to related diversification in that there is commonality between
the different product lines. This can include using similar technologies, management styles,
marketing strategies, brands, distribution channels, or materials. It's important to keep in mind that
there are still distinctions between the businesses. It's not the same as expanding the current
business. An example of concentric diversification would be an office supply company purchasing a
company that makes ballpoint pens. The industries are similar, but

What Happens When An Underdog Becomes A Hegemon? Rivaling...
Synthesis
What happens when an underdog becomes a hegemon? Rivaling David's upset over Goliath, a DVD
rental by mail company rode the booming steaming service business, and become a multibillion
dollar company, capable of going blow for blow with the cable television industry. Netflix now has a
dominant grasp on the streaming service industry, and is in the process of expanding worldwide.
Additionally, Netflix's creative apparatus created award winning original content that is further
contributing to the continuous decline of cable companies. However, an anti–hegemonial coalition,
looking at breaking Netflix's share of the streaming service industry, has formed between Apple,
Amazon, HBO, Hulu, and others. Pessimists have come knocking at ... Show more content on

Yet, consumers' affliction for Netflix has not gone down. All due to brand recognition. In dissecting
data from a survey of 2,500 consumers conducted by iModerate, Jason Lynch of Adweek wrote,
"Consumers...believe [Netflix] will ultimately replace other entertainment options. At the same time,
they can't distinguish Amazon Prime Instant Video from Amazon Prime shipping". In other words,
consumers view Netflix as the streaming service at the forefront in the transition from cable
television. Most importantly, if Amazon is viewed primarily through the lens of an online retailer,
then Apple must be viewed as hardware company.
Alternatively, lets looks beyond Amazon and Apple's lack of brand recognition in the streaming
service industry and delve further into the brand that is Netflix. From college students using the
application as a form of procrastination, and being the quintessential application to use for a date
night, Netflix has constantly innovated the way individuals interact with it. Joe Nocera, writing for
The New York Times, wrote that "[Netflix] invented the binge–streaming phenomenon when it
became the first company to put a show's entire season online at once, it then secured a place in the
popular culture: "Netflix and chill". In fact, "Netflix and chill" has become so ingrained in popular
cultural that the then presidential campaign of Ted Cruz, without knowing properly what

Virgin Mobile Harvard Case

  • 1. Virgin Mobile Harvard Case STUDENT: | Louis–Claude ROUX | PROFESSOR: | Philippe René Gillet | CASE: Virgin Mobile USA "Pricing for the first time" | DATE: 20/02/2012CLASS: MBS–Entrepreneuriat | PART I) ANSWERS BASED ON MY "GUT FEELINGS" Virgin Mobile targets the 14 to 24–year–olds market. The case lays out three pricing options. Which option would you choose and why? I would go for option number two for several reasons. The first one is that I think offer number one is not sufficiently different from the rest of the market. The price positioning is the same and we only get better off peak hours, supposedly "fewer hidden fees" and applications. Virgin Xtras is a creative idea and definitely suits Virgin's image and targeted young audience, however I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It feels like an inquisition for the customer, affecting in a very bad way the purchasing experience. The buckets of minutes might have been a confusing notion at first, however everybody understands what it is now. The industry had to find a common standard to compare the offers and that is what buckets help doing. I think the buckets are visual and graphically clear enough to make the offers more attractive and easy to comprehend. The hidden fees are a true enemy to the consumer experience! Even when you think you have understood everything, there are extras "coming out of nowhere" spoiling the whole experience. That is part of the reason why we always feel like the phone operators are cheating on us. Regarding the on peak/off peak distinction, I think it is a powerful argument. Most people understand what it is and the fact that we can have unlimited time on off peak hours is a must have for every operator today. Just like with the buckets, it might add a complexity at first, but it is something that the customer has understood and therefore we speak the same vocabulary. The big problem that ruins the consumer experience is the addition of these variables. Indeed, you need to compare all of them between different carriers to find the better deal. I would also add to these variables the price of the actual mobile phone with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Netflix Vs. Netflix, Hulu, And Hulu By the end of 2017, over 15.4 million people in the US will cut their cable. Who can blame them? Cable hasn't evolved in last 10 years and cable is becoming increasingly more expensive annually. Nevertheless, several individuals are still paying for cable, when we have streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Streaming services are a superior alternative to cable because they are cost–effective, more accessible, interactive, and uses an advanced algorithm to learn about the viewer, and they don't have any commercials. Streaming services cost consumers about $12 a month, including taxes and other fees. In contrast, cable cost my family approximately $130 per month excluding taxes and other fess and cable is not getting cheaper any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Streaming services platforms are much more interactive compared to cable. The viewer can pause, rewind or fast forward through the content; viewers can change the language if they demand. The streaming services' video player remembers the exact time the viewer stopped watching, so the viewer can resume their program from where they were left off. Also, Consumers have the freedom to watch anything from the streaming services diverse content catalog, and they can rate and write a review of the shows and movies. Also, consumers can conserve their favorite shows and movies in my list section to watch it later. "Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon also offer far more than cable does. People can watch a wide variety of movies, from comedies to documentaries, which may never air on the TV. Netflix subscribers can also choose among a range of different TV shows as many times as they want, even if it has been taken off the original channel it aired on" (Binge or Bust? Netflix Vs. Cable TV 1). Streaming services use an advanced algorithm. This algorithm collects data from the viewers to learn about viewer's interest. As an example, let say the viewer just watched a comedy movie and if the viewer gives the movie a positive rating, this algorithm will remember that and in the future, it will suggest the same kinds of movies to the viewer. • 5. Stereotypes Of Hispanic Women "Yes, I'm blonde. When I started as an actor, because of the accent and my body and my personality, it was not what the stereotype of the Latina woman in Hollywood is, so they didn't know where to put me. The blond hair wasn't matching. The moment I put my hair dark, it was better for my work" (Vergara). The media tends to portray stereotypes of many different people without warnings. So, when people watch TV or listen to the radio all they get are the generalizations of these different people. One group that has been highly stereotyped and somewhat portrayed in the media are Hispanic women. How the media portrays Hispanic women is based on both gender and racial stereotypes (Correa, 2010). This portrayal of Hispanic women impacts people in many ways. Sofia Vergara's quote that was stated above is an example of the impact these stereotypes caused; it was hard for Sofia Vergara to get a job because she didn't look like the stereotypical Hispanic woman and the media continues to portray Hispanic women as such. One of the largest influences on the roles Hispanic women are expected to play is the media's portrayal of them. The media portrays Hispanic women by generalizations of how they look, how they act, and how they identify their values. Before getting into how the media portrays Hispanic women, there must be a clear outlook on the fact that there is very little representation of Hispanics in the US media. This has a large influence on how people in the US view Hispanics. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Netflix : Delivering Value Through Innovation Netflix: Delivering Value through Innovation Netflix, "the company that revolutionized watching of movies and TV shows (Netflix Media Center, n.d.)" began in 1997 with CEO Reed Hastings creating an online based DVD subscription service. It quickly became a success through its low cost, fast delivery times and proprietary queue. The company went public in 2002 and continued to expand its membership and in 2007 introduced its online streaming service. Netflix currently boasts, "over 81 million members in over 190 countries enjoying more than 125 million hours of TV shows and movies per day, including original series, documentaries and feature films (Netflix Media Center n.d.)". Netflix's core competency is to deliver high quality, diverse entertainment directly to the consumer. In the beginning this meant not having to travel to your local video store (Blockbuster) and hoping that the store had the movie that the customer wanted. Netflix removed this from the customer's routine, by mailing the latest DVDs directly to their door. Now, Netflix and its streaming based subscription allow the consumer to watch their choice of over thousands of programs anytime, anywhere, as many times as you want. Different people have defined marketing differently. On the face of it, it may be thought of as the process by which an organisation reaches out to the consumers with the products or services that it has to offer in order to make profits. If we dwell deeper, it 's worth mentioning that marketing strategies have evolved immensely over decades. Many have brought continued success to the Virgin Group, while others have struggled and failed. Virgin Atlantic Airways was launched in 1984, Virgin Mobile (cellular) in 1999, and Virgin Blue (airline) in Australia (now named Virgin Australia) in 2000. Branson wrote in his autobiography of the decision to start an airline: My interest in life comes from setting myself huge, apparently unachievable challenges and trying to rise above them ... from the perspective of wanting to live life to the full, I felt that I had to attempt it. (Branson, 2007) Branson started Virgin Express in 1996 by acquiring Euro Belgian Airlines, a short–haul airline. Ten years later Virgin Express merged with SN Brussels Airlines to form Brussels Airlines. At this time Branson and Virgin expanded their airline branch into Nigeria (Virgin Nigeria) and America (Virgin America). (About Us: Virgin, 2015) With the success of Virgin Airways, there was undoubtedly going to be some disagreements from their competitors. The south side of Chicago at the time was a very poverty stricken neighborhood at a time where there was still a lot of racial tension. The Younger family occupied the small apartment on the south side of Chicago. Lena Younger the mother of the family, and Big Walter had moved into the apartment after getting married, in the hopes of moving into a house after one year. Mamas' hopes of owning a home soon faded since times were so hard. After the death of her husband Lena Younger received a check from his insurance for ten– thousand dollars. The thought of having that much money started to tear the family apart over what to do with it. Living in the south side of Chicago was a dangerous place, and the Youngers felt like it was a way out of the poor neighborhood. Lena Younger looked at the money as a chance to get the house she always wanted, and something that she would be able to pass down on to the next generations. Many would argue that mama Lena was being hard on her children by forcing what she wanted and her beliefs on the family. I argue that Lena Younger only wanted what was best for her family by showing it through her love for her family, her religious ways, and her determination to give her family a better life. The love that Lena Younger have for her children is unexplainable. Her children are basically her life. She refers to them as her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In late 2013, the CRTC (2013c) ruled that Category C national news services should be offered by all broadcasting providers in an effort to remove regulatory restrictions for new entrants, increase competition in this sector and to enhance consumer choice. Issues and Implications The CRTC (2013c) identified five categories that this policy addressed: the necessity of offering all marketable news services, news neighbourhoods, packaging requirements, filing affiliation agreements and resolution strategies in negotiation rates and set an implementation period. The Commission ruled in favour of offering all news services to Canadian cable subscribers, against requiring that broadcasting distribution undertakings (BDUs) categorize similar programming into news neighbourhoods, against requiring packaged or bundled services and has permitted continued commercial negotiations instead of CRTC mediated negotiations. As The Attitudes Of American Households Begin To Shift, As the attitudes of American households begin to shift, the FCC should enact a new regulation to best fit the changing viewership of consumers. At its simplest form, this new rule would allow television consumers to have the option to pick and choose the individual television channels they desire to pay for, instead of having to pay for an entire cable "package", while still including the "basic" cable service. Essentially, this new regulation would force cable TV providers to allow the option for an à la carte pricing rate for expanded cable television services. (McCarthy) Nevertheless, the 1992 act was followed by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. CIS–486 Instructor: Dr. Barry Cumbie 12/10/16 University of North Alabama INTRODUCTION Finding new and innovative ways of handling existing problems has never been easier or more frequent than today. New technological concepts seem to be coming to light on what seems a daily basis. With this being said, sometimes it is easier to solve existing problems with existing solutions rather than finding new ones. When is it acceptable for companies, or even governments, to innovate to find a solution rather than replace with existing technologies? For example, if a company is increasing its LAN infrastructure would it be best to invest in new or less expensive technologies even if they are untested, or to replace with more expensive but reliable technologies. This is a question that could be asked by someone deciding on a home computer, to NASA deciding the best way to launch rockets into space. Research Background 1 Fiber optic cable is not a new form of technology. It allows for larger amounts of data to be transferred at a rate much higher than traditional copper cable. This is the main appeal to fiber optic technologies. This being said, it is very expensive to replace current mediums with fiber optic infrastructure. Founded by Robert L. Johnson, former press secretary to congressional delegate Walter E. Fauntroy, and vice–president of government relations for the National Cable Television Association (NCTA), the Washington, DC based corporation used the contacts and available source information on the emerging cable television industry, and inspiration gathered on a fortuitous shared taxi ride to set the mission in motion. After viewing a proposal shared by his fellow passenger, and discussing the possibility of a cable channel dedicated to American senior citizens, Johnson envisioned a different model of the same programming application. Reasoning that the national African American population offered a multibillion–dollar consumer market, Johnson saw lucrative potential. As quoted in Forbes, Johnson believed that "The idea for BET was not conceived out of idealism, but as a business opportunity that had been ignored." Netflix suffers low profit margins due to the cost of international expansion and currency fluctuations. Unlike its competitors – Hulu and Amazon, Netflix does not generate income through advertisements. At an international level, the dependence on laws and regulations of different countries is an obstacle to the company's potential growth. Netflix's high dependence on internet connectivity makes it difficult to gain popularity in many parts of Asia and Africa, where internet connectivity is not well established. • 66. The Physical Portrayals Of Hispanic Women In The Media The physical portrayal of Hispanic women in the media has a large influence on the Hispanic women and girls that view these portrayals. The media's physical portrayal of Hispanic women is that they are voluptuous, dark–haired, tanned skin, and petite. There are many films, TV shows, and any other media outlets that portray Hispanic women as such. Examples of these portrayals are "Modern Family," "Maid in Manhattan," and "Girl in Progress." In each of these movies or shows, the main character appears as the stereotypical Hispanic woman. This is what many Hispanic women and girls believe that the world sees them as. They also believe that this is how they should look. This especially affects adolescent girls that identify as Hispanic. "media use may play a role in the body image development of Latina adolescents" (Schooler, 2008, p. 134). Most of the time when watching television, Latinas see a white woman and their beauty standards. The difference between white women in the media as opposed to Latin women is that there is a greater variety of how white women in the U.S. look. When a Latina finally sees someone who is Latina, they expect to see themselves, instead, they see Eva Mendes, long wavy hair, curvy, and petite. When young Latin women see this, they expect themselves to be the same way. If they don't look like that, it can result in a spoiled body image of themselves. "Latina women in this sample tended to hold the lowest perceptions of their bodies, the highest awareness of Consumerism as a factor in the body/beauty standard, and scored high in racial identification" (Poran, 2002, p. 79) Latin women understand who they are and when someone is of the same background. Many are also self–conscious about their bodies, and that is likely due to the fact that not only are actresses on TV shows thin and curvy, but many commercials are about the newest way to lose weight rapidly, or what to buy to get curves. All women of any race have issues with body Image, but as a Latina, the media plays a big role in how Latinas form their body image. According to the media's portrayal of Latin women, there are two ways Latin women act. The first way is passive, pure, and dependent on men; the second way is wild, ... It's now crucial for companies to be able to adapt and change to keep up with new technologies and developments. Strong, but malleable, business strategies in both diversification and innovation will help any company to keep up with competitors, customer demand, and trends. There are two main strategies in innovation: sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation. These innovative strategies allow for growth and new opportunities that competitors don't have. Innovation often involves research and development activities to create the competitive advantage. The strategy can allow new or smaller businesses to become a threat to larger corporations; it also allows for growth and expansion of a company. In a world of increased global competition and weaker economies, it can be hard to stay afloat and relevant. In implementing diversification and innovation strategies, a company can achieve a competitive advantage and become profitable in our ever–changing and developing world. THEORIES OR MODELS I. This can include using similar technologies, management styles, marketing strategies, brands, distribution channels, or materials. It's important to keep in mind that there are still distinctions between the businesses. It's not the same as expanding the current business.
