Wu Zetian And Hatshepsut
Despite Tang empress of china, Wu Zetian, and Egypt's Pharaoh Hatshepsut leadership being
underrated and infamous, these two hero women had their similarities and differences during the ear,
beginning from striving to achieve leadership and power and later ruling the empires. Wu Zetian
was a non–nonsense lady who strived to get what she desired and even used manipulation and
violence for anyone who would cross her way. With stunning beauty and an excellent talent, Wu,
managed her way top into emperor. Hatshepsut became emperor upon the death of her father
claiming that, her father wanted her pharaoh. These two notorious women brought out the best in
themselves and making their reign glorious.
Wu Zetian, born in a well of family became interested in ruling as an emperor at a young age.
Unlike other younger girls, Wu spent most of her time reading about politics. She learnt how to read,
write Chinese classics and play music. By the age of thirteen, Wu became popular due to her beauty,
outstanding wits, talents and intelligence earning her a place at the court of Emperor Tsai Sung. Wu
was easy to love, therefore becoming the emperor's favorite concubine within a short period of time.
Tsai Tsung died later then succeeded by his son Kao Tsung. (Richard, Harper 1998) By this time
Zetian was already twenty seven years old. She immediately became the favorite concubine of the
new emperor giving him sons. Zetian strangled her own daughter and blamed Koa's wife making her

Who Was Wu Zetian
Wu Zetian was born in 624 in Wenshui County, Shanxi Province. In 655 Wu was promoted to the
position of Empress. In their time having a woman ruler was unnatural, it was said that Empress Wu
was a successful ruler. The Tang dynasty (618–906 AD) was a time of freedom for women. After
five years of Wu marriage she took an active part in state affairs and took over the administration
after her husband's stroke. Wu was said to be fair to the laborers, lowered taxes, raising agricultural
production and strengthen public works. She would show no mercy to anyone who would not abide
by her rules. Wu would have them thrown in prison. Research has shown that Wu was also cruel to

Pompey was assassinated before Caesar arrived in Egypt. Cleopatra arranges to meet Caesar by

Women 's Influence On Female Powerlessness : Harriet...
For the vast majority of our contemporary history, female artists and patrons have been left out of
the discussion and have not been recognized or studied in depth. In the last few decades, this has
started to rapidly change. This essay will examine Harriet Hosmer, a prominent nineteenth century
Neo–Classical sculptor and Empress Wu Zetian, a Song Dynasty ruler, as examples of this historical
neglect. They will both be discussed in relation to their male contemporaries and how they situated
themselves as equals.
Harriet Hosmer's most relevant contemporary would certainly be Hiram Powers, with his Greek
Slave statue being a very similar theme to Harriet's Zenobia. Both of these statues display a female
captive in chains. However, beyond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With her pieces, she was taking steps towards the celebration of women's power instead of
powerlessness.4 Her later works, specifically Queen of Naples and Queen Isabella, "look beyond the
convention of a woman's victimization to portray a woman of undisputed power."4 Hosmer's work
was very much underappreciated during her time of work. Most critiques and reviews of her work
could not get past the issue of her gender, and said things akin to "This sculpture is amazing for a
woman, but just okay for a man's work." They appreciated her work, but not as fully as they could
have as it directly challenged many traditionally held views.
Empress Wu climbed the political and social ladders from being a member of Emperor Taizong's
harem to ruling the empire of Gaozong from "behind the curtain" several years later. When Gaozong
died in 683 she maintained control of the throne as regent to her sons before claiming the throne for
herself in 690. Being a singular female empress was an extremely foreign thought in this time and
Empress Wu tactfully employed acts of patronage to legitimize her right to the throne.
Empress Wu claimed divine right to the throne and used faith and the religion of Buddhism to
legitimize that claim. She financed numerous pieces of Buddhist art during her rule. Most notably,
the Vairocana Buddha at Longmen and refashioning of the city of Luoyang into a 'divine capital'.5
She transformed the imperial

History Of Wu Zetian
Empress Wu ZeTian: Ancient China's Greatest Ruler
The Tang dynasty, in ancient China, was one of prosperity, growth and was the start of evolution in
ancient China. The ruler during that time was Wu ZeTian, the first and only female empress. She
was an intelligent leader who created many concepts and rules that led ancient China to growth and
prosperity. It was difficult for her to maintain her position but she did and brought affluence to the
country. She established a fair government system and devoted herself in preserving literature and
history. She established a powerful army and put her efforts in creating laws that allowed women to
be treated as equals to men. Empress Wu ZeTian was important to the advancement of China
because she constructed a strong education and government system which created a stable country,
expanded China's borders giving the country security and created more opportunities for women.
Firstly, Wu ZeTian believed education and a well–organized government system was the key to
successful development of a country. She, "personally interviewed candidates. This became the sole
means by which officials could be recruited. These formalities guaranteed appointments could no
longer be obtained through patronage, bribery or corruption." (Old Book of Tang). Wu ZeTian
developed a reliable government system that was fair and could make unbiased decisions. She
demonstrated great leadership by taking the time to choose trustworthy officials and made sure each

Spread of Buddhism in China Essay
It is believed that Buddhism spread to China through the Silk Road. When the Silk Road opened in
the 2nd century BC, missionaries and pilgrims spread Buddhism to China. Chang Ch'ien was
recorded to first bring Buddhism to China when he heard about India and Buddhist beliefs on his
way back to China. In about the 1st century BC, a Buddhist community is said to have been living in
China. But the most well–known story of the spreading of Buddhism is when Han emperor, Mingdi,
had a dream about Buddha in 68 CE and sent Cai Yin, his official to learn more about it. Meanwhile,
Mingdi learned from his ministers that he had seen Buddha, "the God of the West" in his dream.

Starting in 468 BCE during the Zhou dynasty, the Grand Canal took about 6 million peasants about
a millennium to build. The construction of this canal finally finished in 610 CE under Emperor
Yangdi of the Sui dynasty. Changing China's staple from millet and wheat to rice was the main
reason of the building of the canal, but it also helped Chinese economy by connecting the more
productive southern China to the capitals in northern china. It increased interdependence between
the north and the south. One section of the Grand Canal was also intended to supply Chinese armies
which led to better defense and administration in China. Also, in building the canal, officials were
required to work together, so the Grand Canal brought better authority and unity to political
officials. The downside of this canal, though, was the number of peasants killed in constructing it.
Over half of the 6 million peasants employed to build the canal died in building it, which was a
reason the Sui dynasty fell. The great Grand Canal set the foundation for the great Tang dynasty.

Daodejing Contradictions
The Daodejing is a collection of chapters from ancient China. The chapters explain why things
happen the way they do. In order to understand everything that exists and the way it exits, the
Daoists explain "dao" which means the way. The way helps people to find their way to excellence
during a time of turmoil and strife. Life as it is known is uncertain and unclear. Daodejing uses a
non–logical approach to explain the uncertainties in life. The authors of this ancient text use
contradictions to prove their points because logic cannot always be used as a guide. Contradictions
help to find balance and teach people to live in a world without having a full understanding of
things. According to chapter 15, it was stated that "those who prize way–making

How Did The Tang Empress Wu Zetian, The First Female Ruler...
The Tang Empress Wu Zetian (also known as Empress Wu or as Wu Zhao; ruled China around 690–
705 AD) was China's first female ruler. (Dash, 2012) Pharaoh Hatshepsut was the was the fifth
pharaoh between 1508 and 1458 BC of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt and the first women

We will look at Wu Zetian, the first female ruler in China, was born in 624. Per parents were rich

Empress Wu: Evil Usurper? Essay
The Chinese possessed strong beliefs about astrology, so when it was prophesised that a women
ruler would soon ascend the throne word quickly spread throughout the common people. It was
predicted that within 30 years this woman known as 'The Prince of Wu' would rule over China.
Whether or not Empress Wu's rise to power was due to 'heaven ordained fate', she fulfilled the
prophecy and became China's first woman ruler in the 7th century. Historians, scholars and common
people alike have long debated Wu's reign. She is commonly referred to as an evil usurper due to the
way she took power. However whether she fully deserves this reputation is to be examined. As the
only female Chinese ruler, Wu challenged traditional gender roles and ... Show more content on

Acting as her spies, these women 'informed her of all the activities of the Empress [Wang]... so that
she was able consistently to outmanoeuvre them'. This evasive action of assembling spies was the
first of many taken by Wu to maintain her rising power. She understood how to manipulate those
that were dissatisfied in the palace to her advantage.
Wu was not content with being one of the emperor's consorts and her hunger for power drew her to
extreme measures. As Wu's status with the emperor rose, she decided that in order to remove Wang
from the role of empress, she must 'contrive a suitable excuse' for the emperor to demote his
principal consort. An opportunity arose when Wu gave birth to a daughter whom Empress Wang
often played with, as she had no children of her own. Wu 'smothered the infant', blamed it on Wang
so Kao–tsung had her removed from the position of empress. This is the first example of Wu using
tactics as ruthless and cruel as killing her own child to achieve power. From then on Wu
manipulated many into helping her ascend the throne and killed those who opposed her. She took
advantage of power hungry middle class officials with high ambition who would assist her in
gaining power. Wu promised (and came through) on rewarding these officials, however once they
were no longer of use she was 'quick to abandon them... [or have them]

Creative Story : A Short Story
After the storm Old Wu went searching the beach for his nephew, Cao Ren. He instead found a sea–
child with shimmering mackerel–green skin. The sea, whipped by angry winds, had swaddled the
infant girl in soft kelp and hidden her in the high wrack line amid the tangled remains of Cao Ren's
fishing boat.
The girl's large, dark eyes stared calmly up at Old Wu from a childish version of Cao Ren's face. Old
Wu knew then that Sea had fallen in love with his nephew.
Common sense demanded he throw the child back, like a fish too small to be of use, yet family duty
overcame common sense. "No good will come of this," the old man muttered. "But you can stay
with me, Little Fish, until someone comes for you."
Cao Ren returned two days later, a bloated raft for squabbling gulls picking at his body.
Word spread quickly. Typhoon, in a jealous rage, had forced the sea to down her lover and was
looking for the lost sea–child. Fearful villagers wanted to drown the infant but Old Wu refused.
"No! Someone will come for her."
"She will bring misfortune, and when she does we will throw you both into the ocean," promised the
villagers.
The mackerel came in more numbers that spring than the oldest fishermen could remember.
The villagers forgot their promise, believing the sea had blessed them for keeping the child safe.
When she grew older she loved singing to the fish and seeing the smiles on fisherman when the fish
jumped into their boats. She loved the creaking of their little

Even though Yu Hua, the author of novel To Live, is also the scriptwriter of Zhang Yimou's film To
Live, the philosophies of life in the novel and the film are apparently different. The most impressive
part of the novel is the "excavation" of humanity: having experienced the loss of wealth, family and
friends, Fugui is still attempting to live in this world. By telling the readers the miserable life of
Fugui, the novel actually more wants to show the dark side of Chinese society. However, the film
concentrates on elaborating the improvement of the character's life, by showing the change of time
and the optimism of Fugui. Therefore, different motifs and atheistic skills of the novel and film

Clearly, the direct difference between the novel and film on the plot development should be the fact
that in the book all Fugui's family dies, including Jiazhen and Kugen. The ending of the novel leads
the readers have a sad and helpless feeling except that Fugui becomes very silent and enlightened.
The sorrow ending of his life can also be treated by Fugui as a way of hope. Wu Wei is interpreted in
the book through the idea of simplicity in Fugui's life. At the beginning of the book, Fugui even
attempted to kill himself when he lost all his family money from gambling; however, at the end,
after experiencing loss of family, wealth and friends, he finally understood the meaning of life. At
about the end of the story, Fugui said, "Look at the people around me, like Long Er and Chunsheng.
They each had their day in the sun, but in the end they lost their lives. It's better to live an ordinary
life. If you go on striving for this and that, you'll end up paying with your life." The recall of his life
and his statement about his experience actually stand on a critical point towards those people who
attempted to get away their ordinary lives. Hence, Yu Hua's To Live tells the readers a story about
how a man survived and lived through the most chaotic eras in modern Chinese history by obeying a
life of simplicity. Although Fugui thought about to suicide at the beginning, but when he came to

The Golden Age Of Chinese Film Industry
During the 1930's the Chinese Film Industry underwent several improvements in film techniques;
improvements in film quality and the advancements in sound quality, which led to this period being
called the "Golden Age" of Chinese film. Some very important directors of the time were Sun Yu,
Yonggang Wu and Muzhi Yuan saw the potential to educate the masses through the film Industry.
This was done by highlighting the problems in society; such as inequality between the genders. This
was done by showcasing the plight and struggles of the lower classes who struggled against society's
Confucian morality and values. The main areas that these directors focus upon in their films were
social issues, class struggles and urbanisation which can be seen in their films, Daybreak (1933) a
film about a traditional rural couple moving to cosmopolitan Shanghai only to be corrupted by the
city. The Goddess (1935) follow the life of a mother forced into prostitution and her struggle to put
her son through education. She suffers abuse from a "Boss" but also experiencing the social abuse
and stigma attached to her work. Street Angel (1937) which follows a group of friends who help
each other in their dire, poor circumstances and stand up against the oppression of being exploited
by society. Through these three films, these famous leftist directors educate the nation on the issues
of the time.
One of the primary issues these films look at are the social problems of the 1930's; this can be seen

Lao Dao also realizes that he is not able to move up in class due to a lack of education for him. This
furthers Lao Dao's feeling of estrangement toward a society he's apart of because he recognizes that

classes of China do not feel significant to the progression of China because they weren't given equal
opportunity of education as the higher classes. Thus, this allows them to not feel united with the rest
of China. I agree with Dr. Hao's stance on education inequality because it sheds light on the complex
problem of the detachment of citizens within a society which I believe to be true.
Dr. Hao uses storytelling in "Folding Beijing" to illuminate segregation of jobs and power that
comes with those jobs between classes and alludes to China's job and power inequality today; the
division amongst the jobs creates an emotional chasm, a feeling of disconnect, with other classes.

Comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism
When it comes to comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism very few similarities exist. Although
both religions are practice based, opposed to religions based on faith, the ultimate goal of each
religion are vastly different. In Daoism it is believed that the spirit is eternal after death while In
Mahayana Buddhism we see that there is an end to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. However,
there is one similarity in both that is incredibly important to the practice of both religions. This
similarity is the concept of emptiness. By observing the proper practices of Bodhisatvvas in
Buddhism and the ideal ruler in Daoism we can see how both religions have a very similar view on
the importance of emptiness, and also how they differ. In the Daoist text the Tao Teh Ching, there is
mention of the idea of an empty bowl. This concept is very important and can be applied to many
aspects of Daoist practice. When thinking of a bowl we understand it as something that is to be
filled. However, as it is referred to in the Tao Teh Ching it is the empty space inside the bowl that
gives it purpose. Metaphorically the bowl is a representation of our mind. If we fill our mind and in
turn close it off to any new understanding we our limiting our potential. One of the most important
concepts in Daoism is Wei Wu Wei, or, action without action. Like water bending and moving
through a stream it is believed that people should act accordingly to nature not challenging or trying

Taoism: Interaction And Balance In The Tao Te Ching
Philosophy in China flourished during the tumultuous time of the Warring Period and, as a result,
new ideas emerged. One school of thought, teaching inaction and balance, became known as
Taoism. In the Tao Te Ching, a master, someone who follows the Tao, holds many virtues such as
humility and discipline. A master of the Tao should live in a state of complete balance and practice
"not–doing." Because of its infinite complexities, the human language cannot completely define the
Tao. Lao, knowing this, humbly described the Tao and the Masters duty to it. The Master should
always remain humble and modest and live a simple and unintentional life. Lao, understanding
humanity's arrogance, left The Tao Te Ching vague because the its complexities were ... Show more

People should stop pursuing education, give up technology, and lose all selfish desires. Instead, a
Master should find balance and neutrality in all things. To emphasize this point, Lao presents two
opposing truths and explains how one would not exist without the other. For example, Lao states,
"Being and non–being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other. Long and short
define each other. High and low depend on each other. Before and after follow each other (2)."
Instead of choosing one or the other, a master should reside in the middle. Choosing neither but
acknowledging that both are vital to each other's existence. According to the Tao, trying to control
one's fate will ultimately lead to failure or dissatisfaction. A master lives in no illusions and is
content to let the Tao guide his life. "He is ready to use all situations and doesn't want to waste
anything" (27). True goodness happens spontaneously and without planning. Unlike other religions,
morally justified action is counterproductive because it goes against the will of the Tao. For
example, one verse states, "When the Tao is lost, there is goodness. When the goodness is lost, there
is morality. When morality is lost, there is ritual. Ritual is the husk of true faith, the beginning of
chaos" (38). This verse also demonstrates the importance of balance. A master should choose to be
neither good nor evil and "hold on to the center"

Ethics And Morality In Dao's Death
Dao is about balance and harmony. It's about avoiding the extremes. There would have to have been
Daoist assassins, according to the rules set by the Dao, if there were no assassins, then the Dao
would be unbalanced. Since Dao is about balance and harmony, one cannot exist without the other.
If there are life givers, then there would have to be life takers. Daoism teaches that the universe is a
balance of opposites: male and female, light and dark, low and high. In each case, opposing forces
should be in harmony. However, the problem arises, who would give the commands to kill? Would it
be random?
The Zhuangzi, expresses the idea of people being inherently karmically evil, [1] so it would be very
easy for a human to become corrupt, even the purest emperor. Based on this idea we would have to
believe that the people chosen to be assassinated couldn't be decided by a human. Then who, or
would it be more of a what; what would deciding factor? The question of morality and ethics comes
into play. Morality and ethics are philosophical words or names. Would an assassin be restricted by
ethics and morality? Or would they be exempt? The Daoist concerns of humanity that ethics and
morality supposedly cover would already be dealt with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

following the way of nature, letting nature and the assassin's spirit be in tune with the Dao. So then
would it be an ethical kill? According to the Dao, it wouldn't matter if it was ethical or not. To
humanity would it be ethical; it's difficult to say because then emotions would come into play.

Gun Control In The Tao Te Ching
The Tao Te Ching outlines that if people value great individuals, they become weak. Also, if people
place high value on possessions, they start to steal. The Tao Te Ching also articulates that the master
leads by filling the hearts of people, weakening their ambitions and toughening their determination
(Lao–tzu 3). The master assists individuals to lose their knowledge and desires and creates
misperception in people who believe they possess knowledge. This concept can be applied in a
political conflict in the contemporary world. It is evident that individuals have overvalued
possessions. Overvaluing possessions has led to the emergence of various problems that have caused
political conflict.
According to Tao Te Ching, people start stealing when they place too much value in possessions.
For example, the gun control debate in the United States has raged on for several years. On the one
hand, the government argues that individuals should have rights over their guns to reduce gun
violence. There have been numerous cases of mass shootings in the recent past. These incidents are
attributed to the high number of guns accessible even to children and mentally challenged

Daoist Belief In Lao Zi : The Book Of Tao And Lao Qi
The art of landscape pieces depicts the Daoist faith. Daoism desires enhancement of the Dao, the
way or path, within a person, which one achieves through education, meditation and rituals, and
enhancement of the qi. Qi is the vital energy surrounding an area. Core concepts of Daoism are
identifiable in the analysis of artwork from popular time periods of the belief system. The piece of
art, referred to as hill shaped incense burner, crafted in 113 BCE was excavated in 1968 from the
tomb of Prince Liu Sheng and Dou Wan (Neave 142). The visual elements of art used in the hill
shaped incense burner visually represent Daoist beliefs identified in Lao Zi: The Book of Tao and
Teh: the importance of mountains, behaving like water, and the simple natural way of life. The
immortal's dwelling in the mountains, an important belief in religious Daoism, is seen in the large
dimensions of the mountain's peak, vertical lines, detailed texture appearance, and smoke
representing qi in the mountain's atmosphere. Authors of Asian Art state, "the worship of deities who
inhabited the sacred mountain...the pursuit of immortality" (Neave 140). The origins of religious
Daoism are difficult to identify, however, historians believe the idea of deities pursuing immortality
in the sacred mountains relates to the dualistic beliefs in Daoism. According to this quotation, the
Daoist's belief of immortal's residence in the mountains is a central idea of religious Daoism, hence,

Joy Luck Club Strengths And Weaknesses
"Two Kinds" Strengths, Weaknesses, and More... After exploring the contradictions in the lives of
the Joy Luck Club, such as strength and weaknesses, obedience and independence, individuality and
society, joy and sadness, and hope and despair. It really got me thinking about my strengths and
weaknesses as a person (and where they came from). Obviously, people's strengths and weaknesses
are subjective, so during the course of this writing session I will either use my own personal opinion
of what my strengths and weaknesses are or I will use my friends opinions on the subject. When
thinking about my strengths and weaknesses, I asked my friend Harrison for help. He thinks that I
am fairly intelligent, but that's about it. On the downside he says that I give myself too much credit,
meaning I have a big ego. Harrison also claims that I have a short temper and repeat myself at times.
I think that my intelligence comes from my genetics, specifically from my dad. He got a scholarship
to the University of Iowa in accounting. He majored in business and accounting to finally become a
car salesman. He is now the general manager of Carousel Motors in Iowa City, and he pressures me
to do good in school. Along with my intelligence, my short temper also comes from my dad. My dad
has always had a short fuse. Every time I did something wrong, he would either yell at me or be
visibly upset about the situation. This is the same with me, as I usually get very mad if someone
either doesn't listen to me or is acting very stupid in the given situation. Balancing short temper is
relatively simple and can be easily fixed by medication. On the other hand, having a big ego is
subjective to each and every person and that changes how people perceive me. Therefore it is
literally impossible to balance ego.
The same thing goes with people saying I am too loud. My Video Production teacher, Mrs. Saylor,
loves my loud voice because it helps get a clearer audio signal on the Liberty TV morning show. On
the other hand, if you were a classmate of mine that is across the room from me. You can see why
they would get annoyed if they could hear all my conversations because I am too loud. One non
arguable strength of mine is my physical strength. I

Empress Wu: The Becoming Emperor Of China
The only woman to become the emperor of China in all of its history was Empress Wu from 690–
705. She used her physical beauty and intelligence to make her way up until eventually she had
worked her way to the highest position in the government. Her marriage to Gaozong, the emperor
before her, led her closer to the position. She showed no mercy to those who tried to impede her
strides to the top. Many did not concur to her becoming emperor because she was a woman and at
the time men were seen as superior to the woman, and therefore a woman could not be emperor. She
did not let these things hold her back and ultimately was a positive addition to China. Empress Wu

Wu expanded China's territory through perpetual war endeavors. The cost of war was high, so in
order to finance the many different wars she established taxes. The taxes she placed were, "taxes
including a household levy, a graduated tax based on property assessment, and a land levy collected
on acreage basis." In doing this she spent far less money on military expenditures, therefore saving
money for other uses to better China. Her military brutality came in handy when they had attacks
from the Turks. In 689 the Turks invaded Chinese land. In retaliation to this Empress Wu gathered
up 450,000 soldiers to get rid of the Turks, but they failed to fight them off. After the defeat finding
more recruits was difficult so in desperate action she decided to bring her son out of exile and make
him a general of an army. This shows good qualities in her as a ruler, because it showed that she was
not afraid to ask for help when she really needed it. When her son became general they gathered
50,000 men to fight with him and in the end forced the Turks to retreat to the steppes. This was her
first of three impressive military actions. The next was her fending off of the Tibetans. In 696 the
Tibetans started causing trouble on the Chinese border and invaded from the west. The Chinese

China 's Political And Social Structures
China is the fastest emerging political power in the world, a power that in a short amount of time
turned from a third–rate industrial nation with lots of raw potential, to the second largest economy
and one of the largest militaries in the world. But is China's political and social structures unique?
Certainly, the Chinese system possesses certain aspects similar to what already exists in other
modern nation–states and their governments, however, it is how these pieces coelute together into a
coherent political and economic machine that makes the model unique. Politically, the Chinese
Communist Party is quite unique. Most authoritarian political parties are either dominated by party
elites who only pass on power to loyalists, or merely a military regime. The CCP, however, is
significantly technocratic, and much more inclusive. Many members of the CCP are not just military
leaders or individuals with law degrees, they also include engineers and more recently business
leaders. Furthermore, although there is a level of patronage in Chinese politics and society known as
Guanxi, in fact as Mingxing Liu states in his paper about advancement in the CCP Central
Committee "the literature suggests that leaders were able to stay in power because they engaged in
factional politics instead of selecting the most capable officials" (Victor Shih 2012) However, that

The Golden Age Of A Civil War Across China Essay
Daoism appeared as a reaction to a civil war across China, known as the warring states period,
which caused a wide feeling of civil unrest. The war went on for nearly two hundred and fifty years
and spread across the Zhou Dynasty, which was divided into eight separate states. Daoist believed
that war was a result of excessive desire, and only through modest desire will people and the state
experience peace and unity. Daoist argued that desire and all actions must be natural, and we must
return to nature to establish our balance. We must return to nature and to a time like the Golden Age,
that came before the Zhou Empire and the warring states. The Golden Age refers to a more simple
time in life, in which people had relied on agriculture in small villages with a trusted government
that also followed the way, causing a balance and unity. To manifest this simplicity and selflessness
naturally is the Dao, which is the way of all things. Though in today's world we have strayed far
from nature, for reason and excessive desires have corrupted people and their values. Daoist would
believe that our society is unbalanced ,and we must return to the path of the Dao to restore our unity.
We must behave naturally and act modestly in order to find the way, but like the opposing states in
the Zhou Dynasty, we have excessive desires causing unnatural behaviors. These unnatural
behaviors keep many people from finding the way, but the Daodejing supplies many passages of the

Women In The Tang Dynasty
Throughout the long history of mankind, women's status has been through a huge historical
evolution. Ancient Chinese feminism is obviously more noticeable than other cultures due to its
feudal and conservative society. Yuan Zhen, who is a famous Chinese writer and politician in Tang
Dynasty, has written one of the greatest masterpieces in that time period called The Story of
Yingying. In the story, he reflects the awakening of feminism in the Tang Dynasty by describing the
love tragedy about Zhang and Cui Yingying as well. However, there are a lot of different
distinctions on people's opinions on this story, and many people believe that Cui Yingying is just
simply a woman who does not know how to protect or respect herself. As time goes by, people start

changing their view on the famous female character Cui Yingying. Many female roles can be able to

literary works, Women in the Tang Dynasty can now fully displayed their confidence and beauty.
Feminism is the belief that woman have equal political, social, sexual, love, intellectual and
economic rights to men (Holdsworth8). Though Yingying is not completely fitted to the whole
standards, but she has chased her love and what she does has become a progress of awakening
feminism. Also her bold act to pursue their love becomes a symbol of the awakening of feminism.

Daoism : A Concept Of Good And Evil
Daoism Daoism is synonymous with Taoism; in this religious philosophy, the way of nature is
central theme of life. It was founded by Lao Tzu in 500BC in China. Lao is believed to have
authored the "Dao de Jing", which details the Daoist beliefs. Dao is a concept, a way, a principle that
will lead a person to a happy, peaceful life. Dao can be achieved by incorporating the Three Jewel of
Taoism that are humility, simplicity and compassion in one's life. According to Dao, de Jing "The
Way to Heaven is to benefit others and not to injure".15 Further, there is no concept of good and
evil, the Dao is simply the universe, which is perceived as a self– sustaining entity that generates
energy called qi. Like other Chinese traditions, Daoist also have great reverence for the spirits of
ancestors as well as spirits of nature that is plants, animals, rivers, etc. 16 This qi is divided into the
yin and yang which refer to the opposite and complementary forces in nature. The dark female
aspect and the light male aspects both which are dynamic and symbolized the ever changing but
perfectly balanced forces of the universe. They stand for the cycles in life that is creation and death,
hence transforming into one another ultimately creating the qi in the universe, which is the
substance all existence is comprised of. These forces reflect the central concept that all existence is
made of the same substance that is qi and humans are merely a small part of a much larger complex

Differences Of Religion In The Western And Western Religions
Religion is an important aspect of the lives of many people throughout the world. While there are
many different religions throughout the world that all have different beliefs, people tend to only
accept one religion as the ultimate truth and reject all others. This ideology sometimes can be so
strong as to cause war between countries throughout the world as well as throughout history. There
is also a popular opinion in western countries, including the United States, that western religions are
better than eastern religions, where eastern religions are often viewed as archaic and undeveloped.
This opinion, however, is incorrect and often stems from the major differences between the two
different types of religion that people are often not aware of. Eastern Religions differ from Western
Religions in that they have different ideology as well as a different set of customs and values.
Eastern Religions often have cosmic origins. In Eastern Religions, there is a large emphasis on
growing yourself so that you can become a more aware spiritual person, and this required to reach
salvation. This is because Eastern Religions view the cause of man's plight is from the soul's
immaturity. In order to accomplish this spiritual evolvement, one must also follow a strict set of
rules throughout their life that involves respecting others and living a virtuous and moral life. Even
the idea of salvation in Eastern Religions is very different from that of Western Religions, being that

from different classes also had fairly equal chance to become officials and influence the government

Whereas, the Byzantine Empire preserved old Roman law and political system (McKay et al. 203).
The Senate was the major voice of patricians and the plebeians to the Byzantine Emperor. The

Daoism: A Journey Essay
By traditional accounts, Daoism, or Taoism as it is also known, was founded during the sixth
century BCE in China under the influence of the legendary philosopher Lao Tzu and the Tao Teh
Ching (Coogan 222), but, as with every religion, this origin has been questioned (Jurji 24). The
validity of Lao Tzu has been brought into question, and many believe the Tao Teh Ching is actually
the work of several authors in one compilation of ideas thought well before the sixth century or even
fourth century, BCE (Coogan 222). Notoriously hard to define, Daoism has taken many shapes over
the years and is as much as a way of life as a religion. Although there is a enormous amount of

It is, but it isn't. It is everything and nothing all at once, and those who know it do not speak of it. It
is the origin of all we know and all returns to the Dao, but it is unknowable. It is part of us, but it is
beyond us. The Tao Teh Ching seeks to teach of something that is unteachable, and it is upfront in
that contradiction. Simply or not simply put, "The Tao is like an empty bowl,/ Which in being used
can never be filled up./ Fathomless, it seems to be the origin of all things./ It blunts all sharp edges,/
It unties all tangles,/ It harmonizes all lights,/ It unites the world into one whole./..." (Laozi 9) and
"Man follows the ways of the Earth./ The Earth follows the ways of Heaven,/ Heaven follows the
ways of the Tao, / Tao follows its own ways," (Laozi 55). It is what it is, it is hard to define, and if
an individual truly believes in the Dao then they don't attempt to explain it away. Over and over
throughout the Tao Teh Ching, there is advice and insight beyond trying to explain the inexplicable
and a pecking order so to speak. From the truth of warfare (Laozi 69–71) to the emphasis on wu–
wei, or action through non–action (Laozi 143), and living serenely and harmoniously with nature
(Laozi 65) and the world (Laozi 105), Daoism as a lifestyle and a religion has drawn many of its

Why I Don 't Have A Home
In life, our goal is to find a place we belong. Some people find their belongingness in their craft.
Some find it in success. One may find it at their home. But for me? I don't have a home. The year is

am not a eunuch nor can I be a religious official! Therefore, I am a very low class; a peasant

position. Shall I sell myself to slavery and be the lowest of the low? But then I remember it is illegal
to sell a free person into slavery("History of Slavery in China" 3). What could this mean for me
then? If I am forced to be free, what good could it be? One may have heard that women are more

The Power Of Wu Zetia
Anything men can do, women can do better. No one in Chinese history could have represented this

many reasons, good and bad. Foremost, she is known to be the first and only female emperor in
Chinese history, maintaining her rule over the country for nearly half a century. During that time
period, women were not usually permitted to become emperor, let alone have any position in
politics, yet Wu Zetian still managed to obtain the roll. Empress Wu, as not only a ruler but a leader,
was extraordinary. She improved the lives of her people by providing China with a powerful and
stable centralized government and advancing the political system with the addition of skillful
bureaucrats. The power she was able to hold and the authority she exemplified changed Chinese
history and is set as an inspiration for other aspiring women.
In this paper, the secondary sources chosen introduce the female ruler of China, Wu Zetian. These
sources include 2 books and 3 scholarly articles on this significant historical figure. The first source
is an article from the Journal of Asian Culture, called "Echo and Shadow: Images of Women in

Tang Dynasty Research Paper
The Tang Dynasty was the most successful Chinese dynasty because of its incredible government,
enjoyable daily life, and amazing inventions and accomplishments. The Tang Dynasty was the most
successful dynasty because it had amazing emperors and government. The dynasty started in 618 CE
The second emperor, Taizong, reformed the military and expanded the empire to stretch over Tibet,
Eastern Turkey, and Inner Mongolia. He used forced labor and taxes less, and allowed people to
practice many different religions such as Christianity and Buddhism. However, towards his decline,
he became power hungry and ignored his duties. Taizong then ordered many extravagant things to
be built, such as a palace that took two million days to be built, which he took down because the
climate around it was too hot and the palace was too grand. When he finally passed on, he gave the
duty of being the emperor to his ninth son, Gaozong. Gaozong then became the third emperor of the
dynasty. Gaozong soon married Lady Wang. He soon saw Wu Zetian in a temple and made her his
concubine. Wu Zetian then rose to power after allegedly murdering her daughter and accusing Lady
Wang of doing so, which caused Gaozong to divorce her. Even now, nobody truly knows who killed
her daughter. Then, she connected Lady Xiao, who was Gaozong's former first concubine, to the
crime and got her exiled, which was how Wu rose to power as empress. Later in 660 CE, she
unofficially became emperor of China. Although she did not

  • 5. Women 's Influence On Female Powerlessness : Harriet... For the vast majority of our contemporary history, female artists and patrons have been left out of the discussion and have not been recognized or studied in depth. In the last few decades, this has started to rapidly change. This essay will examine Harriet Hosmer, a prominent nineteenth century Neo–Classical sculptor and Empress Wu Zetian, a Song Dynasty ruler, as examples of this historical neglect. They will both be discussed in relation to their male contemporaries and how they situated themselves as equals. Harriet Hosmer's most relevant contemporary would certainly be Hiram Powers, with his Greek Slave statue being a very similar theme to Harriet's Zenobia. Both of these statues display a female captive in chains. However, beyond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With her pieces, she was taking steps towards the celebration of women's power instead of powerlessness.4 Her later works, specifically Queen of Naples and Queen Isabella, "look beyond the convention of a woman's victimization to portray a woman of undisputed power."4 Hosmer's work was very much underappreciated during her time of work. Most critiques and reviews of her work could not get past the issue of her gender, and said things akin to "This sculpture is amazing for a woman, but just okay for a man's work." They appreciated her work, but not as fully as they could have as it directly challenged many traditionally held views. Empress Wu climbed the political and social ladders from being a member of Emperor Taizong's harem to ruling the empire of Gaozong from "behind the curtain" several years later. When Gaozong died in 683 she maintained control of the throne as regent to her sons before claiming the throne for herself in 690. Being a singular female empress was an extremely foreign thought in this time and Empress Wu tactfully employed acts of patronage to legitimize her right to the throne. Empress Wu claimed divine right to the throne and used faith and the religion of Buddhism to legitimize that claim. She financed numerous pieces of Buddhist art during her rule. Most notably, the Vairocana Buddha at Longmen and refashioning of the city of Luoyang into a 'divine capital'.5 She transformed the imperial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The construction of this canal finally finished in 610 CE under Emperor Yangdi of the Sui dynasty. Changing China's staple from millet and wheat to rice was the main reason of the building of the canal, but it also helped Chinese economy by connecting the more productive southern China to the capitals in northern china. It increased interdependence between the north and the south. One section of the Grand Canal was also intended to supply Chinese armies which led to better defense and administration in China. Also, in building the canal, officials were required to work together, so the Grand Canal brought better authority and unity to political officials. The downside of this canal, though, was the number of peasants killed in constructing it. Over half of the 6 million peasants employed to build the canal died in building it, which was a reason the Sui dynasty fell. The great Grand Canal set the foundation for the great Tang dynasty. Whether or not Empress Wu's rise to power was due to 'heaven ordained fate', she fulfilled the prophecy and became China's first woman ruler in the 7th century. Historians, scholars and common people alike have long debated Wu's reign. She is commonly referred to as an evil usurper due to the way she took power. However whether she fully deserves this reputation is to be examined. As the only female Chinese ruler, Wu challenged traditional gender roles and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Acting as her spies, these women 'informed her of all the activities of the Empress [Wang]... so that she was able consistently to outmanoeuvre them'. This evasive action of assembling spies was the first of many taken by Wu to maintain her rising power. She understood how to manipulate those that were dissatisfied in the palace to her advantage. Wu was not content with being one of the emperor's consorts and her hunger for power drew her to extreme measures. As Wu's status with the emperor rose, she decided that in order to remove Wang from the role of empress, she must 'contrive a suitable excuse' for the emperor to demote his principal consort. An opportunity arose when Wu gave birth to a daughter whom Empress Wang often played with, as she had no children of her own. Wu 'smothered the infant', blamed it on Wang so Kao–tsung had her removed from the position of empress. This is the first example of Wu using tactics as ruthless and cruel as killing her own child to achieve power. From then on Wu manipulated many into helping her ascend the throne and killed those who opposed her. She took advantage of power hungry middle class officials with high ambition who would assist her in gaining power. • 19. Creative Story : A Short Story After the storm Old Wu went searching the beach for his nephew, Cao Ren. He instead found a sea– child with shimmering mackerel–green skin. The sea, whipped by angry winds, had swaddled the infant girl in soft kelp and hidden her in the high wrack line amid the tangled remains of Cao Ren's fishing boat. The girl's large, dark eyes stared calmly up at Old Wu from a childish version of Cao Ren's face. Old Wu knew then that Sea had fallen in love with his nephew. Common sense demanded he throw the child back, like a fish too small to be of use, yet family duty overcame common sense. "No good will come of this," the old man muttered. "But you can stay with me, Little Fish, until someone comes for you." Cao Ren returned two days later, a bloated raft for squabbling gulls picking at his body. Word spread quickly. Typhoon, in a jealous rage, had forced the sea to down her lover and was looking for the lost sea–child. Fearful villagers wanted to drown the infant but Old Wu refused. "No! Someone will come for her." "She will bring misfortune, and when she does we will throw you both into the ocean," promised the villagers. The mackerel came in more numbers that spring than the oldest fishermen could remember. The villagers forgot their promise, believing the sea had blessed them for keeping the child safe. Even though Yu Hua, the author of novel To Live, is also the scriptwriter of Zhang Yimou's film To Live, the philosophies of life in the novel and the film are apparently different. The most impressive part of the novel is the "excavation" of humanity: having experienced the loss of wealth, family and friends, Fugui is still attempting to live in this world. By telling the readers the miserable life of Fugui, the novel actually more wants to show the dark side of Chinese society. However, the film concentrates on elaborating the improvement of the character's life, by showing the change of time and the optimism of Fugui. Therefore, different motifs and atheistic skills of the novel and film create different perspectives on character's life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clearly, the direct difference between the novel and film on the plot development should be the fact that in the book all Fugui's family dies, including Jiazhen and Kugen. The ending of the novel leads the readers have a sad and helpless feeling except that Fugui becomes very silent and enlightened. The sorrow ending of his life can also be treated by Fugui as a way of hope. Wu Wei is interpreted in the book through the idea of simplicity in Fugui's life. At the beginning of the book, Fugui even attempted to kill himself when he lost all his family money from gambling; however, at the end, after experiencing loss of family, wealth and friends, he finally understood the meaning of life. At about the end of the story, Fugui said, "Look at the people around me, like Long Er and Chunsheng. They each had their day in the sun, but in the end they lost their lives. It's better to live an ordinary life. If you go on striving for this and that, you'll end up paying with your life." The recall of his life and his statement about his experience actually stand on a critical point towards those people who attempted to get away their ordinary lives. Hence, Yu Hua's To Live tells the readers a story about how a man survived and lived through the most chaotic eras in modern Chinese history by obeying a life of simplicity. The Golden Age Of Chinese Film Industry During the 1930's the Chinese Film Industry underwent several improvements in film techniques; improvements in film quality and the advancements in sound quality, which led to this period being called the "Golden Age" of Chinese film. Some very important directors of the time were Sun Yu, Yonggang Wu and Muzhi Yuan saw the potential to educate the masses through the film Industry. This was done by highlighting the problems in society; such as inequality between the genders. This was done by showcasing the plight and struggles of the lower classes who struggled against society's Confucian morality and values. The main areas that these directors focus upon in their films were social issues, class struggles and urbanisation which can be seen in their films, Daybreak (1933) a film about a traditional rural couple moving to cosmopolitan Shanghai only to be corrupted by the city. The Goddess (1935) follow the life of a mother forced into prostitution and her struggle to put her son through education. Dr. Hao is emphasizing that the lower classes of China do not feel significant to the progression of China because they weren't given equal opportunity of education as the higher classes. I agree with Dr. Hao's stance on education inequality because it sheds light on the complex problem of the detachment of citizens within a society which I believe to be true. Dr. Hao uses storytelling in "Folding Beijing" to illuminate segregation of jobs and power that comes with those jobs between classes and alludes to China's job and power inequality today; the division amongst the jobs creates an emotional chasm, a feeling of disconnect, with other classes. Although both religions are practice based, opposed to religions based on faith, the ultimate goal of each religion are vastly different. In Daoism it is believed that the spirit is eternal after death while In Mahayana Buddhism we see that there is an end to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. However, there is one similarity in both that is incredibly important to the practice of both religions. This similarity is the concept of emptiness. By observing the proper practices of Bodhisatvvas in Buddhism and the ideal ruler in Daoism we can see how both religions have a very similar view on the importance of emptiness, and also how they differ. In the Daoist text the Tao Teh Ching, there is mention of the idea of an empty bowl. This concept is very important and can be applied to many aspects of Daoist practice. When thinking of a bowl we understand it as something that is to be filled. However, as it is referred to in the Tao Teh Ching it is the empty space inside the bowl that gives it purpose. Metaphorically the bowl is a representation of our mind. If we fill our mind and in turn close it off to any new understanding we our limiting our potential. One school of thought, teaching inaction and balance, became known as Taoism. In the Tao Te Ching, a master, someone who follows the Tao, holds many virtues such as humility and discipline. A master of the Tao should live in a state of complete balance and practice "not–doing." Because of its infinite complexities, the human language cannot completely define the Tao. Lao, knowing this, humbly described the Tao and the Masters duty to it. The Master should always remain humble and modest and live a simple and unintentional life. People should stop pursuing education, give up technology, and lose all selfish desires. Instead, a Master should find balance and neutrality in all things. To emphasize this point, Lao presents two opposing truths and explains how one would not exist without the other. For example, Lao states, "Being and non–being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other. Long and short define each other. High and low depend on each other. Before and after follow each other (2)." Instead of choosing one or the other, a master should reside in the middle. Choosing neither but acknowledging that both are vital to each other's existence. According to the Tao, trying to control one's fate will ultimately lead to failure or dissatisfaction. A master lives in no illusions and is content to let the Tao guide his life. "He is ready to use all situations and doesn't want to waste anything" (27). True goodness happens spontaneously and without planning. Unlike other religions, morally justified action is counterproductive because it goes against the will of the Tao. For example, one verse states, "When the Tao is lost, there is goodness. When the goodness is lost, there is morality. When morality is lost, there is ritual. Ritual is the husk of true faith, the beginning of chaos" (38). This verse also demonstrates the importance of balance. A master should choose to be neither good nor evil and "hold on to the center" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There would have to have been Daoist assassins, according to the rules set by the Dao, if there were no assassins, then the Dao would be unbalanced. Since Dao is about balance and harmony, one cannot exist without the other. If there are life givers, then there would have to be life takers. Daoism teaches that the universe is a balance of opposites: male and female, light and dark, low and high. In each case, opposing forces should be in harmony. However, the problem arises, who would give the commands to kill? Would it be random? The Zhuangzi, expresses the idea of people being inherently karmically evil, [1] so it would be very easy for a human to become corrupt, even the purest emperor. Based on this idea we would have to believe that the people chosen to be assassinated couldn't be decided by a human. Then who, or would it be more of a what; what would deciding factor? The Tao Te Ching also articulates that the master leads by filling the hearts of people, weakening their ambitions and toughening their determination (Lao–tzu 3). The master assists individuals to lose their knowledge and desires and creates misperception in people who believe they possess knowledge. This concept can be applied in a political conflict in the contemporary world. It is evident that individuals have overvalued possessions. Overvaluing possessions has led to the emergence of various problems that have caused political conflict. According to Tao Te Ching, people start stealing when they place too much value in possessions. For example, the gun control debate in the United States has raged on for several years. The piece of art, referred to as hill shaped incense burner, crafted in 113 BCE was excavated in 1968 from the tomb of Prince Liu Sheng and Dou Wan (Neave 142). The visual elements of art used in the hill shaped incense burner visually represent Daoist beliefs identified in Lao Zi: The Book of Tao and Teh: the importance of mountains, behaving like water, and the simple natural way of life. After exploring the contradictions in the lives of the Joy Luck Club, such as strength and weaknesses, obedience and independence, individuality and society, joy and sadness, and hope and despair. It really got me thinking about my strengths and weaknesses as a person (and where they came from). Obviously, people's strengths and weaknesses are subjective, so during the course of this writing session I will either use my own personal opinion of what my strengths and weaknesses are or I will use my friends opinions on the subject. When thinking about my strengths and weaknesses, I asked my friend Harrison for help. He thinks that I am fairly intelligent, but that's about it. On the downside he says that I give myself too much credit, meaning I have a big ego. Harrison also claims that I have a short temper and repeat myself at times. I think that my intelligence comes from my genetics, specifically from my dad. He got a scholarship to the University of Iowa in accounting. He majored in business and accounting to finally become a car salesman. He is now the general manager of Carousel Motors in Iowa City, and he pressures me to do good in school. Along with my intelligence, my short temper also comes from my dad. My dad has always had a short fuse. Every time I did something wrong, he would either yell at me or be visibly upset about the situation. This is the same with me, as I usually get very mad if someone either doesn't listen to me or is acting very stupid in the given situation. Balancing short temper is relatively simple and can be easily fixed by medication. On the other hand, having a big ego is subjective to each and every person and that changes how people perceive me. Therefore it is literally impossible to balance ego. The same thing goes with people saying I am too loud. My Video Production teacher, Mrs. Saylor, loves my loud voice because it helps get a clearer audio signal on the Liberty TV morning show. On the other hand, if you were a classmate of mine that is across the room from me. You can see why they would get annoyed if they could hear all my conversations because I am too loud. China 's Political And Social Structures China is the fastest emerging political power in the world, a power that in a short amount of time turned from a third–rate industrial nation with lots of raw potential, to the second largest economy and one of the largest militaries in the world. But is China's political and social structures unique? Certainly, the Chinese system possesses certain aspects similar to what already exists in other modern nation–states and their governments, however, it is how these pieces coelute together into a coherent political and economic machine that makes the model unique. Politically, the Chinese Communist Party is quite unique. Most authoritarian political parties are either dominated by party elites who only pass on power to loyalists, or merely a military regime. The CCP, however, is significantly technocratic, and much more inclusive. Many members of the CCP are not just military leaders or individuals with law degrees, they also include engineers and more recently business leaders. Furthermore, although there is a level of patronage in Chinese politics and society known as Guanxi, in fact as Mingxing Liu states in his paper about advancement in the CCP Central Committee "the literature suggests that leaders were able to stay in power because they engaged in factional politics instead of selecting the most capable officials" (Victor Shih 2012) However, that was during the pre–Xi Jinping eras and quantifiable efforts have been made to combat corruption, especially in local ... • 47. The Golden Age Of A Civil War Across China Essay Daoism appeared as a reaction to a civil war across China, known as the warring states period, which caused a wide feeling of civil unrest. The war went on for nearly two hundred and fifty years and spread across the Zhou Dynasty, which was divided into eight separate states. Daoist believed that war was a result of excessive desire, and only through modest desire will people and the state experience peace and unity. Daoist argued that desire and all actions must be natural, and we must return to nature to establish our balance. We must return to nature and to a time like the Golden Age, that came before the Zhou Empire and the warring states. The Golden Age refers to a more simple time in life, in which people had relied on agriculture in small villages with a trusted government that also followed the way, causing a balance and unity. To manifest this simplicity and selflessness naturally is the Dao, which is the way of all things. Though in today's world we have strayed far from nature, for reason and excessive desires have corrupted people and their values. According to Dao, de Jing "The Way to Heaven is to benefit others and not to injure".15 Further, there is no concept of good and evil, the Dao is simply the universe, which is perceived as a self– sustaining entity that generates energy called qi. Like other Chinese traditions, Daoist also have great reverence for the spirits of ancestors as well as spirits of nature that is plants, animals, rivers, etc. 16 This qi is divided into the yin and yang which refer to the opposite and complementary forces in nature. The dark female aspect and the light male aspects both which are dynamic and symbolized the ever changing but perfectly balanced forces of the universe. They stand for the cycles in life that is creation and death, hence transforming into one another ultimately creating the qi in the universe, which is the substance all existence is comprised of. These forces reflect the central concept that all existence is made of the same substance that is qi and humans are merely a small part of a much larger complex cosmos. The ... • 55. Differences Of Religion In The Western And Western Religions Religion is an important aspect of the lives of many people throughout the world. While there are many different religions throughout the world that all have different beliefs, people tend to only accept one religion as the ultimate truth and reject all others. This ideology sometimes can be so strong as to cause war between countries throughout the world as well as throughout history. There is also a popular opinion in western countries, including the United States, that western religions are better than eastern religions, where eastern religions are often viewed as archaic and undeveloped. This opinion, however, is incorrect and often stems from the major differences between the two different types of religion that people are often not aware of. Eastern Religions differ from Western Religions in that they have different ideology as well as a different set of customs and values. Eastern Religions often have cosmic origins. In Eastern Religions, there is a large emphasis on growing yourself so that you can become a more aware spiritual person, and this required to reach salvation. This is because Eastern Religions view the cause of man's plight is from the soul's immaturity. In order to accomplish this spiritual evolvement, one must also follow a strict set of rules throughout their life that involves respecting others and living a virtuous and moral life. As a result, the Tang officials were generally knowledgeable and intelligent. Tang civilians from different classes also had fairly equal chance to become officials and influence the government policy making. This also allowed the government to be diverse and innovative, which also implied more debates which had happened in previous dynasties such as The Debate on Salt and Iron's monopoly between the learned man and the minister in Han Dynasty. Throughout the debate, the emperor of China was able to hear the voices from different perspectives from different classes. Whereas, the Byzantine Empire preserved old Roman law and political system (McKay et al. 203). The Senate was the major voice of patricians and the plebeians to the Byzantine Emperor. The plebeian were generally less educated and less knowledgeable. The plebeian's impact on the decision and policy were weak since they were not close to the emperor and shared less mutual benefit with the emperor compare with the plebeian (Chang). This situation was similarly like early The Roman Senate and People time period. Furthermore, the patricians were usually born in wealthy aristocracy families and they were more likely to become officials. They considered their own interest and benefit for the their class and less for the civilians. • 59. Daoism: A Journey Essay By traditional accounts, Daoism, or Taoism as it is also known, was founded during the sixth century BCE in China under the influence of the legendary philosopher Lao Tzu and the Tao Teh Ching (Coogan 222), but, as with every religion, this origin has been questioned (Jurji 24). The validity of Lao Tzu has been brought into question, and many believe the Tao Teh Ching is actually the work of several authors in one compilation of ideas thought well before the sixth century or even fourth century, BCE (Coogan 222). Notoriously hard to define, Daoism has taken many shapes over the years and is as much as a way of life as a religion. It is everything and nothing all at once, and those who know it do not speak of it. It is the origin of all we know and all returns to the Dao, but it is unknowable. It is part of us, but it is beyond us. The Tao Teh Ching seeks to teach of something that is unteachable, and it is upfront in that contradiction. Simply or not simply put, "The Tao is like an empty bowl,/ Which in being used can never be filled up./ Fathomless, it seems to be the origin of all things./ It blunts all sharp edges,/ It unties all tangles,/ It harmonizes all lights,/ It unites the world into one whole./..." (Laozi 9) and "Man follows the ways of the Earth./ The Earth follows the ways of Heaven,/ Heaven follows the ways of the Tao, / Tao follows its own ways," (Laozi 55). It is what it is, it is hard to define, and if an individual truly believes in the Dao then they don't attempt to explain it away. Over and over throughout the Tao Teh Ching, there is advice and insight beyond trying to explain the inexplicable and a pecking order so to speak. From the truth of warfare (Laozi 69–71) to the emphasis on wu– wei, or action through non–action (Laozi 143), and living serenely and harmoniously with nature (Laozi 65) and the world (Laozi 105), Daoism as a lifestyle and a religion has drawn many of its defining characteristics from the Tao Teh Ching. But for me? I don't have a home. The year is 750 AD and I live in the capital of The Tang Dynasty(618–907), Chang'an; the cultural center where you can thrive as a person; making me part of Ancient China's "Golden Age("Ancient China For Kids" 6)." However, I don't feel my sense of belonging here. I'm in a place I didn't ask to be in: being a young orphan girl, trying to make a living on my own. I have no relation with the top class imperial family, nor am I involved with any sort of aristocracy. Although, maybe if I were a man, I would be able to study and work my way up to bureaucracy at least. However, that is not the case; I am not a eunuch nor can I be a religious official! Therefore, I am a very low class; a peasant orphan("Tang Dynasty Social Structure" 3). I wonder who could throw me out of this helpless position. Shall I sell myself to slavery and be the lowest of the low? But then I remember it is illegal to sell a free person into slavery("History of Slavery in China" 3). What could this mean for me then? If I am forced to be free, what good could it be? One may have heard that women are more free in the Tang Dynasty just because we have a woman in power, Empress Wu! • 75. The Power Of Wu Zetia Anything men can do, women can do better. No one in Chinese history could have represented this infamous quote better than Empress Wu. Wu Zetian became a significant figure in world history for many reasons, good and bad. Foremost, she is known to be the first and only female emperor in Chinese history, maintaining her rule over the country for nearly half a century. During that time period, women were not usually permitted to become emperor, let alone have any position in politics, yet Wu Zetian still managed to obtain the roll. Empress Wu, as not only a ruler but a leader, was extraordinary. She improved the lives of her people by providing China with a powerful and stable centralized government and advancing the political system with the addition of skillful bureaucrats. The power she was able to hold and the authority she exemplified changed Chinese history and is set as an inspiration for other aspiring women. In this paper, the secondary sources chosen introduce the female ruler of China, Wu Zetian. These sources include 2 books and 3 scholarly articles on this significant historical figure. The first source is an article from the Journal of Asian Culture, called "Echo and Shadow: Images of Women in Traditional China," written by Eugene Eoyang. It presents important women in Chinese history, dating back to circa 90 A.D. The article argues that behind the common facts about Chinese women being inferior to men, they have accomplished much more than it seems. One of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Tang Dynasty was the most successful dynasty because it had amazing emperors and government. The dynasty started in 618 CE The second emperor, Taizong, reformed the military and expanded the empire to stretch over Tibet, Eastern Turkey, and Inner Mongolia. He used forced labor and taxes less, and allowed people to practice many different religions such as Christianity and Buddhism. However, towards his decline, he became power hungry and ignored his duties. Taizong then ordered many extravagant things to be built, such as a palace that took two million days to be built, which he took down because the climate around it was too hot and the palace was too grand. When he finally passed on, he gave the duty of being the emperor to his ninth son, Gaozong. Gaozong then became the third emperor of the dynasty. Gaozong soon married Lady Wang. He soon saw Wu Zetian in a temple and made her his concubine. Wu Zetian then rose to power after allegedly murdering her daughter and accusing Lady Wang of doing so, which caused Gaozong to divorce her. Even now, nobody truly knows who killed her daughter. Then, she connected Lady Xiao, who was Gaozong's former first concubine, to the crime and got her exiled, which was how Wu rose to power as empress.
