Effects Of Colonialism In Jamaica
Like many other aspects of the Jamaican way of life, colonialism has shaped the way the media in Jamaica functions, but the country has managed to
maintain large elements of its culture.
In an article written in the Jamaica Observer, Haughton (2017) describes the state of Jamaica as an under–developed child who continues to depend on
its parents for approval. "For many years colonialism milked Jamaica and other Caribbean countries by imposing a false identity on our people,
diminishing resources that affected growth and development (Haughton, 2017).
This 'false identity' to which Haugthon refers, is indicative of how most countries that were colonies operate. This has impacted the way we dress,
speak and relate to each other. Stone (1992) posits that the because the social ideology of plantation society defined black people as being ... Show more

This ultimately impacts the operations of the media in that country since the media function as a conduit of information and cultural trends.
Burton (2015) in her Journal, 'Globalisation and Cultural Identity in Caribbean Society: The Jamaican Case,' however points out that Jamaica has a
unique culture and this has shaped how that countries adapts to the effects of colonialism and even globalisation.
In what the author describes as "Glocalisation', it is noted that in Jamaica, Western cultural patterns are 'domesticated' and adapted within the cultural
pattern of the Jamaican society. In other words, Jamaicans fuse most of what the world offers with aspects of their culture.
"The idea that the Jamaican cultural identity, and by extension the Jamaican's understanding of the self, may be lost by the presence of globalising
forces can be resisted by recognising that there is an appropriation process that occurs and that this process has an underlying instrumental
methodology" (Burton, 2015). This is evident in how the country treats with it food and

Reggae Paper
Reggae, "a generic name for all Jamaican popular music since 1960, is defined as a 'West Indian style of music with a strongly accented subsidiary
beat" (Chang). Reggae music is a great style of music that was popularized by one of the world's most famous musicians, Bob Marley. Personally, I
never listened to it until I made it to college, and it has quickly become one of my favorite genres. For that reason is why I chose to write this paper on
Reggae music. This genre is a very calming and relaxing style of music, which helps me when I am trying to focus on doing important tasks such as
homework, including this paper. In this proton of the paper I will be looking into the history of Reggae music and the development of this particular ...

In this portion of the paper I will be focusing on Bob Marley and give an introduction to who he is, how he learned his music and how he became
famous. On February 6, 1945 in Saint Ann, Jamaica, Bob Marley was born. His father was a white Englishman and his mother was a black
Jamaican. When Marley was ten years old his father died, and at that point his mother moved him to Kingston's Trechtown neighborhood. As a
teenager in Kingston he became friends with Bunny Wailer and this is when Marley learned to play music. When Marley was 14 years old he
decided to drop out of school so he could learn the welding trade, and at the same time he spent his spare time jamming with Bunny and Ska
musician Joe Higgs. In 1962 Bob had recorded his first two singles but neither one of them had received any interest at the time. The following year he
began a Ska band with his friend Bunny and Peter Tosh, which was originally called "The Teenagers". They then became known as "The Wailing
Rudeboys" and after a few more name changes they eventually came up with simply "The Wailers." In 1964 they came out with their earliest Studio
One hit which was recorded in the popular rock steady style, "Simmer Down." Following that track they came out with another hit in 1965 that was
entitled "Soul Rebel" in which both songs were written by Marley. In 1966 Marley married Rita Anderson, they had 12 kids together, and after their

How Did Bob Marley Influence American Culture
Bob Marley and his reggae style music have not only reined supreme throughout Jamaica but also throughout the entire world. Marley's music, style,
philosophy and Rasta pride have, overtime, become a culture itself. Through his Reggae style music he advocated love, peace, hope, and unity and
sought to promote equality among people in Jamaica and around the world. Primarily, his music was based off of life and love and eventually the
messages in his music began to shift to correspond with the political violence occurring in Jamaica at the time. From the beginning of his career to the
end, his music was heavily influenced by the Rastafarian religion. He used his religious values as the basis of his works and his motivation to strive to

Through methodology of close readings of Marley's musical lyrics and analysis of his life, this study will focus on the different ways Marley's
religious values, political stance, and musical style influenced unity among the two conflicting political parties in Jamaica at the time, the Jamaican
Labor Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP). Also, specifically, the influence that his upbringing and his religion had on the formulation
of his music and the influence that it had on the world. Robert "Bob" Marley was born in St. Ann, Jamaica on February 6, 1945. Marley was the
product of a white father and a black mother. In the famous documentary Marley by Kevin Macdonald, Marley acclaims, "My father was white and
my mother was black, they called me half–caste1 or whatever" (Marley 8:00). During this era, the unification among blacks and whites was extremely
looked down upon, and Marley greatly suffered rejection from this characteristic. He also suffered from growing up without a father, which led him
to live a life in poverty and rejection from superior races (Gilroy 231). Living in the Trench Town2 of Jamaica, Marley was exposed toReggae, and

Rastafari Religion's Influence On American Culture
As a person of Jamaican decent I've always loved my culture. I was born Brooklyn but raised in Jamaica from the age of three weeks until I was six.
Although most of which I cannot remember since I've left the island I haven't been back yet. One thing I could not be torn from was the music, culture
and food. Music was always blaring through my households as a child, throughout the many generations one thing that remained constant was the
Rastafarian music, Rock steady, Jazz, Ska, Mento and Ragga. Which is what the adults would always play and to this day it's something that I do.
There are many genres of Jamaican music that countless people who've adapted to the culture do not know about. The influence of Rastafari religion on

Ska Music In Jamaica
Music is known to be a universal language and every human culture has music, just as each has language. At the same time, both music and linguistic
systems vary widely from culture to culture which is a universal feature of the human experience. Melody can contribute to the expression of emotion
in music. Thus, giving Jamaica full credit for ska music, which began organically in Kingston, Jamaica as a music of the people, schools, streets,
studios, dance halls and sound systems. This lead to an orchestrated push to use ska as a way to help develop Jamaica's tourist industry and help stable
the economy. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica, and we can thank the Alpha School for giving us musicians.
Ska music came around during Jamaica's independence in 1962, and Jamaicans got a taste of what would be known as ska music. This type of music
was a different sound from anything heard before, and Jamaicans could not get enough of it. This was considered the first Jamaican music to be
widely recorded in Jamaica, United Kingdom and Britain. Ska music is considered to be the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. This type of music had
elements mento, calypso, jazz, and R&B. In the 1960s, musicians Prince Buster, Duke Reid, and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd created sound systems.
They began to play American rhythm and blues and then began recorded their own songs. With the introduction to sound systems Jamaican bands

In a time of political, economic, and social unrest, a new way of protest was beginning to emerge from Jamaica in the form of reggae music. It was
1963 when a young man from Jamaica by the name of Robert Nesta Marley, better known as "Bob Marley", formed a band called The Wailers, who
would undoubtedly become one of the only reggae bands to rise up from the oppression of the third world country. The country of Jamaica had just
gained independence from the U.K. in 1962, but was anything but a free nation. Those in power chose to exploit the country's few main exports,
primarily bauxite, a mineral used in the process of manufacturing aluminum. The first ten years of Jamaican independence saw considerable economic
growth, but these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So the Jamaican sound systems, mobile devices such as vans or musical equipment on wheels, would be used to host dances, and the deejays
would also use their sound systems to inform his listeners on political happenings. King states that, "As one of the few affordable social activities
for the poor, the sound system brought music to places where the voice of the poor could be heard without interference by local authorities" (16).
Like most of the world during this time, the black population was not allowed any political power, and many began to seek ways to resist. One of
the methods used as a means to passively fight back against the imbalance was the Rastafarian religion. The Rastafarian religion was born early in
the twentieth century, but its roots date back as far as the late 1800's when slaves felt compelled to revolt against the plantation owners on the belief
that God was calling them to fight for freedom. In 1927, a man named Marcus Garvey brought forth to Jamaicans the basis of the Rastafarian
religion, which was to look to Africa for the crowning of a king. This would be a sign for Jamaica that freedom is near. From Africana, the
Encyclopedia of the African and the African–American Experience, author Roanne Edwards quotes Garvey: "Look to Africa for the crowning of a
king to know that your redemption is nigh" (Edwards 1592). In 1930 Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia and baptized with the name Haile
Selassie.

Reggae: The Music of Protest Essay
There are several theories about how the word reggae originated. The first theory claims that the word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance
single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by Toots and the Maytals. Some believe that the word is originated from Regga, the name of a
Bantu–speaking tribe on Lake Tanganyika. Others say that it is a corruption of the word streggae, which is Kingston street slang for prostitute (The
Origins of Ska …,n.d.). On the other hand, Bob Marley claimed that the word was Spanish in origin, meaning "the king's music."
Veteran Jamaican studio musicians offer the simplest, and probably the most logical, explanation. "It's a description of the beat itself," says

Many reggae historians claim that the founders of ska music are legendary producer Prince Buster and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. While
they were looking for new sounds to thrill Jamaican youth they changed the emphasis of the R&B from the first and third beats in the bar to the
second and fourth, creating the offbeat style that became the fulcrum of Jamaican music from then on. By 1962 Jamaica was self–governing and ska
was said to reflect the aspirations of the newly liberated masses. In Jamaica, it is said that in mid 1960s summer the weather was too hot and people
refused to dance to up–tempo music like ska and this situation leaded to slow the tempo of music so a new style of music was emerged, rock steady.
However this is not simply the case, in fact, the reason behind slowing down the tempo can be related with the disappearance of hopes to independent
future of Jamaica. Rock steady simply can be defined as; half–speed ska with the trombone replaced by piano and prominent bass. (Rock Steady,n.d.).
This short lived music embedded to lyrics social themes and was a step to transit to reggae.
Reggae evolved from the roots of music styles mentioned above and the lyrics weighted more on politics that addressed social and economical
injustice. It also drew from folk music, Pocomania church music,

Artists would essentially hit "two birds with one stone." The first bird was the ability to simply perform their music. However the second bird
isn't as simple as the first, it is the meaning. The second was the protest against the Babylon system and oppression. To the Rastafari, the Babylon
system is any and all oppressive and unequal practices in Jamaica. Babylon began to surface throughout reggae music. Reggae lyrics are suggestive
of the reggae protest songs. Bob Marley is a great example of capturing his strong negative views of Babylon. Reggae protest songs proved to be a force
with power, both socially and politically. Ironically the Jamaican government would use reggae as a vehicle to promote its views (King, xiv).
Reggae never lost and will never lose its association with music and the Rastafari culture. It remains a revolutionary form of explanatory art. Music
never remains stagnate, it will always evolve. Roots reggae; a sub–genre of Reggae, was dominant in Jamaica in the cohort of 1975–1980. Roots
reggae tackles the life of a "ghetto sufferer" and discusses truths and rights (Barrow and Dalton, 129). Dancehall and the incorporation of hip hop
rhythms was the new addition of reggae. Dancehall became widely used after the death of Bob Marley in 1981 (Barrow and Dalton, 231). In the
1990's there comes a new generation of reggae artists. It was able to combine conscious lyrics with the distinctive hardcore dancehall beats. Current

The Music Of Jamaican Music And Music In The Jamaican Culture
Reggae is a large part of Jamaican culture and has expanded to be popular globally. It was made popular throughout the 1960s mainly by a group
from Jamaica called the wailers. They spread the genre to numerous parts of the world and touring widely and eventually gaining a following. They
had also covered American songs in their genre which helped made it get into the mainstream. One member of this group Bob Marley is known as a
very important man in this genre and considered to have brought it into the mainstream entertainment.
Reggae was the end genre from many earlier Jamaican dance music's. These fused together to make reggae in the end. Some of the earlier genres
were Ska and rocksteady it also took a heavy influence from American genres of jazz and rhythm blues. The main features from these that made a
song reggae are the skank on the offbeat played in the chord and by a guitar usually. Another feature is typically a bass melody or it can also be
played by on organ. Vocals are another common item in reggae music, Bob Marley was the primary vocalist of his group. Reggae is typically a
slower tempo at around 75, also it is almost always written in 4/4. Reggae has taken influence from different cultures as its popularity spread around
the world for example in Spain the local reggae style would be slightly different to the regular reggae style from Jamaica.
The style of reggae has held itself through time, from when earlier version originated in Jamaica in the 1950s

Essay on The Evolution of Reggae Music
The Evolution of Reggae Music
Reggae has sustained the test of time and remains one of the world's last genuine folk music. The evolution of Reggae music can be traced back to the
early 1900's with 'Mento', which is a simple music art form of Jamaican folk music with strong African roots. Reggae music is protest songs against
racism, corruption and injustice. It has close links with a religion based around the Bible that is re–interpreted from a black's perspective,
'Rastafarianism'.
The key features of Reggae music are the 4/4 time signatures, the emphasised beats 2 and 4 of each bar melody, the short repeated bass/guitar riffs, the
syncopation, the pentatonic/ major/minor/blues scales used, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first ever reggae tune was "Nanny Goat", by Larry and Alvin. Millie Small, and her debut single "My Boy Lollipop" was the perfect example
of the success that this new generation of peppy horn melodies and up tempo vocal sounds. "My Boy Lollipop" was the song responsible for creating
a massive explosion of Reggae music in the local industry. During the Reggae era, artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff,
King Stich and Burning Spear started to emerge and incorporate the offbeat syncopated music style of Reggae into their songs, transforming the
songs into popular hits. Bob Marley was born in 1945 and he first joined Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer to form 'The Wailers'. Then he produced his
own soul, rock steady (romantic soul), ska and close harmony 'doo–wop' style songs, for example 'Catch a fire' and 'I shot the Sheriff'.
With the war era of the 60's approaching, reggae finally took form with a mellow beat, conscious and emotional lyrics and bands that spoke the
words of the people. The spiritual influence of reggae captured fans worldwide and for the first time ever; reggae was a real influence internationally.
Bob Marley and the Wailers produced songs of hope and freedom that related to the wars happening between Vietnam. The song "War" by Bob Marley

Jamaican Music, Culture, And Music In Jamaican Culture
Reggae music was a big part of Jamaican culture. Many artists practiced the style of reggae and some of the artists like Bob Marley influenced and
showed people internationally all about this music. It originated around the time that Jamaica was being attacked by European countries like Spain and
native people being taken into slavery. Bob Marley was born after the time of slave trading but whites still effected the native people and this is how he
got his inspiration for his music.
a)The music of Jamaica began five centuries ago, when Columbus colonized the land of the Arawak Indians. This dates the start of oppression by first
the Spanish and then the English in this area of the Caribbean. Blacks were brought in as slaves by the English, and although Jamaica has had it's
independence since 1963, the tension of authority and control still reigns. Jamaica is a story of injustice, international influence, ineffective governing,
and unequal distribution of wealth; all of these elements provide a solid base for the theme of oppression and the need for a revolution and redemption
in Jamaican music. Reggae in particular reflects these injustices, and the feelings, needs and desires to change the lifestyle that Jamaicans have
historically lived. Reggae music has two meanings. It's generic name for all Jamaican popular music since 1960, West Indian style of music with a

How Did African American Music Influence Jamaica

Bob Marley and The Wailers: The Influence
Bob Marley and the Wailers were an influential reggae group from Jamaica. The group produced music that was inspiration for the people of
Jamaica. Both in their struggles for freedom and equality. The one inspiration for the musicians was the teachings of Rastafarianism: a type of
monotheism religion. Monotheism literally means the belief in only one God. Rastafarians believe in one God called Jah. They believe that Jah
sent his son in the form of a man named Haile Selassie I. Rastafarians also believe that speech is very important, because through speech they can
feel the presence and power of God. When the Wailers released their first record called "Simmer Down" it sold over 80,000 copies ("Early Wailers").
Rastafarian teachings also influenced many of the later albums the band would produce. Robert Nesta Marley and the Wailers developed great music
full of love and inspiration. The band produced music with strong messages, high energy performances with proactive audiences, and high levels of
performer engagement.

The Island Of Jamaica, Jamaica
For our travel report project I chose the island of Jamaica, a place that I have been longing to visit for quite sometime. Jamaica is an island that is a
part of the Greater Antilles located 90 miles south of Cuba and 100 miles west of Haiti. The island has an area of 4,243 square miles and a 635–mile
coastline. This beautiful island is covered in rugged mountains, with some being volcanic, and has its highest peak on Blue Mountain at 7,401 feet!
(Briney) As of July 2014 the population of Jamaica is 2,930,050 people, which is completely understandable considering its awesome climate! The
island's climate varies depending on your location on the island. On the coast the temperatures tend to be tropical, hot and humid, but more temperate
inland. The capital of the island, Kingston, has average July high temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and January average low temperatures of 66
degrees Fahrenheit. (Briney) The first inhabitants of Jamaica were the Arawaks who were from South America. Later on, in 1494, Christopher
Columbus was the first European to explore the island. In 1510, decedents from Spain began to settle in. After the Europeans began to settle, they
brought war and disease to the island and this greatly affected the Arawaks and eventually they died off. The British arrived in 1655 and took Jamaica
from Spain. Then, in 1670 Britain took full formal control of Jamaica. Near the 1930s, Jamaica began to gain its independence from Britain and in

activities like that were essentially invalid manifestations of the work of higher government authorities against which they believed. One of the original
reasons behind Bob Marley?s emergence as a leader within post–independent Jamaica was simple: the complete failure of the country?s political
leaders to represent the needs of the black lower classes in the years before and after their independence. By staying away from the malevolent
competitive battles of the actual and possible political leaders, he could attract a group of followers that others could not amass. ?As former Jamaican
prime minister Michael Manley has noted, ?Marley took what was a subculture in Jamaica and elevated it to a dominant culture?[He] took a folk art
and he elevated it into a universal language of communication.? Perhaps the expansion of black culture was even more important than political

Religion, ancestry, and cuisine are all major parts of Jamaica's culture. Most of Jamaica's population consists of people of West African ancestry. 1.3
percent of people in Jamaica are West Indian (Witherbee). Another portion of Jamaica's population are those who came to Jamaica very early from
South America. Because there were so many types of people coming to Jamaica, religion was heavily influenced. Rastafarianism is practiced
throughout Jamaica. It is a mixture of social and religious beliefs. A large number of Jamaicans are Christian. Other religions such as Hinduism,
Buddhism, and Islam are also practiced (Witherbee).
Famous Citizens
The most famous and influential Jamaican is Bob Marley, who was a reggae star. His career started when he was the lead singer in a vocal trio called
The Wailers. The Wailers music was a combination ofCaribbean rhythms and American soul music. The Wailers became popular very quickly. They
were signed in 1973 by Chris Blackwell. Shortly after they were signed, unfortunately, the Wailers broke up (Ruhlmann).

Reggae Music's Influence On American Culture
Reggae Music
Music itself is often times a strong indicator of a society's culture, history, and beliefs. Sometimes however, when another group listens to one society's
music they also make connections to lyrics, sounds, and melodies that were put into the song. This is very much the case with Reggae music as not only
did it take off in Jamaica, its country of origin, but the United States and parts of Europe as well. Jamaicans viewed music as a way to pass down
traditions and as a way to pass through difficult times. Reggae music often times discusses the suffering of the Jamaican people in its lyrics. Reggae

Reggae started in the late 1960s in Jamaica, reggae was considered a mix of many other musical styles, mostly ska and Jamaican metro, the sound was
similar to what was coming from new Orleans, most listeners did not distinguish reggae from Jamaica dancehall music or the slowed down version of
ska music known as rocksteady, this was up until the band toots and the maytals came along. There songs served as a sort of public notice that a
new style of music had been born and was staking its claim on the musical frontier. Besides its sound, reggae music is frequently associated with
the common themes in its lyrics. The earliest reggae lyrics spoke mostly of love, specifically romantic love between a man and a woman. But it
started to take a heavy influence from Rastafarians throughout the 1970s, it has now become not the love for someone but the love for the universe
and cosmic spiritual love, the love of ones fellow man or their love of god. But not all reggae singers sung like this some were advocates for change

In addition to, he sang about the poverty and the drastic wealth inequality between the rich and the poor in both Jamaica and the world, and about

spoken in the British Caribbean, mainly in the island of Jamaica. This human and cultural element of language is culture specific to the island of
Jamaica since humans diffused and collaborated various languages to form the dialect of Patois. In a 1975 interview by Karl Dallas with Bob
Marley, he stated, "No, he can't unnerstand that," he says in an aside to Taylor. "That's a patois. It's not straight English you can write. Sometimes we

Culture Analysis : Jamaica. Jamaica
The country that I chose to conduct a culture analysis on is Jamaica. Jamaica is a third world country located in North America and the 3rd largest
island in the Caribbean Sea. There is a 2.5 million population, which equally divided between urban and rural areas. The country runs approximately
146 miles long and varies between 21– 52 miles wide. The climate is tropical and its main tourist attraction is their beautiful beaches. The capital of
Jamaica is Kingston, which has a population of more than 645,000. Kingston is the chief port of Jamaica and is along the southeastern coast of the
island. It is covered by the "Blue Mountains", which is thickly covered which tree ferns. The Blue Mountains experiences an average of 200 inches
of rain annually, resulting in topsoil erosion and an abundance of streams. Peasants nurture coffee, usually grown on large plantations, in the valleys
of the mountains. It is amongst the most expensive coffees in the world and is exported mainly to Japan. The official language of Jamaica is English,
but those who stay in rural areas speak patois. Patois is a creole dialect with West African, Spanish, and French elements. The language today reflects
the history of the country and its interaction with diverse mixture of cultures from many ethnic, and social backgrounds. The local language is a
reflection of a history of contact with variety of speakers, but the official language remains to be standard English (Pryce, 1997). However many

One of its first contributions after becoming independent was its global Civil Rights Movement. From the sixties onwards, a black activist named
Marcus Garvey impacted this movement through his philosophical ideas. In the article "10 things Jamaica has contributed to the World" it states,
"Garvey's ideas also had a huge influence on the views of American civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King and Malcolm X who fought for
equality for blacks in America and across the world. Garvey's political actions and beliefs gave rise to social movements of activism around the

the Rastafari Movement. This was a religion based movement that began in the 1930s. It is most associated with the colors of the Ethiopian flag

"From the shantytowns of Kingston, Jamaica, to the cobblestones streets of Great Britain, reggae music was a powerful and liberating voice for the

as "One Love" and "Redemption Song" were inspired by the effects of oppression upon blacks in Jamaica. Marley's persona for unity and peace among
people throughout the world was an inspiration for Jamaicans. Most blacks in Jamaica during the 1960s suffered from economic hardships and racial
discrimination. This in turn marked the beginning of a religious movement called Rastafarinism where reggae music was an element that distinguished

Critical Analysis Of Get Up Stand Up By Bob Marley
Bob Marley was born February 6, 1945 in St Ann Parish, Jamaica. Throughout his early years Marley had lived in some of the poorest and
impoverished areas in Jamaica. Even in poverty Marley found an escape and had a passion for music. In Jamaica Bob Marley was a supporter of the
People's National Party. His major influence on the people was an extreme threat to the power of the PNP's rival parties. December 3, 1976 there
was an assassination attempt on Marley. This assassination attempt allegedly was for political reasons. A few years later Marley was diagnosed with
cancer that had spread and he died in Miami, Florida, on May 11, 1981. The song "Get Up Stand Up" was the last song Bob Marley performed live on
stage. It was performed in September of 1980 less than a year before he died in May of 1981
The song "Get Up Stand Up" was released in 1973.The social context of this period has a major impact on the choice of lyrics in this song. This song
became a huge part of the human rights movement in Jamaica. The lyrics are politically motivated and wanting change. The song talks about the
necessary actions that need to be taken to avoid the current oppression in Jamaica. One of the more important topics of the song was the fight for
everyone to have their unalienable rights and to say that they are not just reserved for the upper class. Another point of view was the song defending
the commonly misunderstood Rastafarian religion. The three people that worked on the song Tosh, Marley, and Wailer were all faithful advocates of the
reggae and Rastafarian movement.
Rastafari is an African religion that is still relatively new. The religion was developed in the 1930s in Jamaica after Haile Selassie was named the
King of Ethiopia. The followers of this religion believe that Selassie is God and that he will return all of the black people displaced from slavery
and colonization to Africa. Bob Marley's music and success helped spread the religion. The Rastafarians believe that black people are the chosen
people of God. Some of the religious practices in the religion include smoking and inhaling marijuana. The purpose of the marijuana is to increase a

What Are The Similarities Between America And Usa
In a world with numerous countries and adversities, every country has its different appeal. Sometimes we find ourselves comparing their similarities
and differences, like there topography, culture, language, and so on. In this essay, based on my experiences and research, I am going to compare
Jamaica and U.S. Although both countries are compelling in different ways, they hold more similarities than we even imagine. Jamaica and U.S are
located in two different geographical settings. The U.S is a country which consists of 50 states covering North America, and surrounded by oceans on
all sides. It's the fourth–largest country in the world with a population of approximately 318.9 million people. One the other hand, Jamaica is an island

The focus of Michael Veal's book was to show Bob Marley's themes of exile and spiritual conviction have inspired audiences around the world, and the
structure of popular music. Veal concentrated on the extent to which Jamaican music is a potent metaphor for the society and times within which it
emerged, and for global culture at the new millennium. Bob Marley and the Wailers have been noted for having the album of 20th century. Which
helped Jamaica get recognition for influence on popular music. Jamaican music, reggae, has a sub–genre known as dub music. Dub music was

One style had artists that were figureheads anointed by international audiences. Their music was often recorded in better–equipped studios outside of
Jamaica and was recorded at high production values. It was looked at as more sophisticated chord progressions than what the local norms in
Jamaica were. This style had more emphasis on singing. The other style was apart of the dancehall culture, which was targeted mainly to local
Jamaican audiences. DJs would rap over rhythm tracks, and they gained some popularity outside of Jamaica. Dub music focused more on sexual
topics, "lovers rock", political violence that was upon Jamaica, and songs relating to current events in general. The difference between the two styles
was there respective sites of consumption. Audiences of Marley's music would attend more of a concert to listen to his music live, whereas, the other
style's audience was go to a dancehall to enjoy live music. The biggest difference is that one side of reggae was marketed to an international audience
that was conditioned by the naturalist values of rock and roll and soul music. The other was influenced by the lifestyle of the people locally; which

Effects Of Colonialism In Jamaica

  • 1. Effects Of Colonialism In Jamaica Like many other aspects of the Jamaican way of life, colonialism has shaped the way the media in Jamaica functions, but the country has managed to maintain large elements of its culture. In an article written in the Jamaica Observer, Haughton (2017) describes the state of Jamaica as an under–developed child who continues to depend on its parents for approval. "For many years colonialism milked Jamaica and other Caribbean countries by imposing a false identity on our people, diminishing resources that affected growth and development (Haughton, 2017). This 'false identity' to which Haugthon refers, is indicative of how most countries that were colonies operate. This has impacted the way we dress, speak and relate to each other. Stone (1992) posits that the because the social ideology of plantation society defined black people as being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This ultimately impacts the operations of the media in that country since the media function as a conduit of information and cultural trends. Burton (2015) in her Journal, 'Globalisation and Cultural Identity in Caribbean Society: The Jamaican Case,' however points out that Jamaica has a unique culture and this has shaped how that countries adapts to the effects of colonialism and even globalisation. In what the author describes as "Glocalisation', it is noted that in Jamaica, Western cultural patterns are 'domesticated' and adapted within the cultural pattern of the Jamaican society. In other words, Jamaicans fuse most of what the world offers with aspects of their culture. "The idea that the Jamaican cultural identity, and by extension the Jamaican's understanding of the self, may be lost by the presence of globalising forces can be resisted by recognising that there is an appropriation process that occurs and that this process has an underlying instrumental methodology" (Burton, 2015). This is evident in how the country treats with it food and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Reggae Paper Reggae, "a generic name for all Jamaican popular music since 1960, is defined as a 'West Indian style of music with a strongly accented subsidiary beat" (Chang). Reggae music is a great style of music that was popularized by one of the world's most famous musicians, Bob Marley. Personally, I never listened to it until I made it to college, and it has quickly become one of my favorite genres. For that reason is why I chose to write this paper on Reggae music. This genre is a very calming and relaxing style of music, which helps me when I am trying to focus on doing important tasks such as homework, including this paper. In this proton of the paper I will be looking into the history of Reggae music and the development of this particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this portion of the paper I will be focusing on Bob Marley and give an introduction to who he is, how he learned his music and how he became famous. On February 6, 1945 in Saint Ann, Jamaica, Bob Marley was born. His father was a white Englishman and his mother was a black Jamaican. When Marley was ten years old his father died, and at that point his mother moved him to Kingston's Trechtown neighborhood. As a teenager in Kingston he became friends with Bunny Wailer and this is when Marley learned to play music. When Marley was 14 years old he decided to drop out of school so he could learn the welding trade, and at the same time he spent his spare time jamming with Bunny and Ska musician Joe Higgs. In 1962 Bob had recorded his first two singles but neither one of them had received any interest at the time. The following year he began a Ska band with his friend Bunny and Peter Tosh, which was originally called "The Teenagers". They then became known as "The Wailing Rudeboys" and after a few more name changes they eventually came up with simply "The Wailers." In 1964 they came out with their earliest Studio One hit which was recorded in the popular rock steady style, "Simmer Down." Following that track they came out with another hit in 1965 that was entitled "Soul Rebel" in which both songs were written by Marley. In 1966 Marley married Rita Anderson, they had 12 kids together, and after their marriage he spent a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Did Bob Marley Influence American Culture Bob Marley and his reggae style music have not only reined supreme throughout Jamaica but also throughout the entire world. Marley's music, style, philosophy and Rasta pride have, overtime, become a culture itself. Through his Reggae style music he advocated love, peace, hope, and unity and sought to promote equality among people in Jamaica and around the world. Primarily, his music was based off of life and love and eventually the messages in his music began to shift to correspond with the political violence occurring in Jamaica at the time. From the beginning of his career to the end, his music was heavily influenced by the Rastafarian religion. He used his religious values as the basis of his works and his motivation to strive to unite... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through methodology of close readings of Marley's musical lyrics and analysis of his life, this study will focus on the different ways Marley's religious values, political stance, and musical style influenced unity among the two conflicting political parties in Jamaica at the time, the Jamaican Labor Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP). Also, specifically, the influence that his upbringing and his religion had on the formulation of his music and the influence that it had on the world. Robert "Bob" Marley was born in St. Ann, Jamaica on February 6, 1945. Marley was the product of a white father and a black mother. In the famous documentary Marley by Kevin Macdonald, Marley acclaims, "My father was white and my mother was black, they called me half–caste1 or whatever" (Marley 8:00). During this era, the unification among blacks and whites was extremely looked down upon, and Marley greatly suffered rejection from this characteristic. He also suffered from growing up without a father, which led him to live a life in poverty and rejection from superior races (Gilroy 231). I was born Brooklyn but raised in Jamaica from the age of three weeks until I was six. Although most of which I cannot remember since I've left the island I haven't been back yet. One thing I could not be torn from was the music, culture and food. • 5. Ska Music In Jamaica Music is known to be a universal language and every human culture has music, just as each has language. At the same time, both music and linguistic systems vary widely from culture to culture which is a universal feature of the human experience. Melody can contribute to the expression of emotion in music. Thus, giving Jamaica full credit for ska music, which began organically in Kingston, Jamaica as a music of the people, schools, streets, studios, dance halls and sound systems. This lead to an orchestrated push to use ska as a way to help develop Jamaica's tourist industry and help stable the economy. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica, and we can thank the Alpha School for giving us musicians. Ska music came around during Jamaica's independence in 1962, and Jamaicans got a taste of what would be known as ska music. This type of music was a different sound from anything heard before, and Jamaicans could not get enough of it. This was considered the first Jamaican music to be widely recorded in Jamaica, United Kingdom and Britain. Ska music is considered to be the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. This type of music had elements mento, calypso, jazz, and R&B. In the 1960s, musicians Prince Buster, Duke Reid, and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd created sound systems. They began to play American rhythm and blues and then began recorded their own songs. With the introduction to sound systems Jamaican bands began covering American hits and began to take the ... • 6. Bob Marley In a time of political, economic, and social unrest, a new way of protest was beginning to emerge from Jamaica in the form of reggae music. It was 1963 when a young man from Jamaica by the name of Robert Nesta Marley, better known as "Bob Marley", formed a band called The Wailers, who would undoubtedly become one of the only reggae bands to rise up from the oppression of the third world country. The country of Jamaica had just gained independence from the U.K. in 1962, but was anything but a free nation. Those in power chose to exploit the country's few main exports, primarily bauxite, a mineral used in the process of manufacturing aluminum. The first ten years of Jamaican independence saw considerable economic growth, but these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So the Jamaican sound systems, mobile devices such as vans or musical equipment on wheels, would be used to host dances, and the deejays would also use their sound systems to inform his listeners on political happenings. King states that, "As one of the few affordable social activities for the poor, the sound system brought music to places where the voice of the poor could be heard without interference by local authorities" (16). Like most of the world during this time, the black population was not allowed any political power, and many began to seek ways to resist. One of the methods used as a means to passively fight back against the imbalance was the Rastafarian religion. The Rastafarian religion was born early in the twentieth century, but its roots date back as far as the late 1800's when slaves felt compelled to revolt against the plantation owners on the belief that God was calling them to fight for freedom. In 1927, a man named Marcus Garvey brought forth to Jamaicans the basis of the Rastafarian religion, which was to look to Africa for the crowning of a king. This would be a sign for Jamaica that freedom is near. From Africana, the Encyclopedia of the African and the African–American Experience, author Roanne Edwards quotes Garvey: "Look to Africa for the crowning of a king to know that your redemption is nigh" (Edwards 1592). In 1930 Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia and baptized with the name Haile Selassie. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Reggae: The Music of Protest Essay There are several theories about how the word reggae originated. The first theory claims that the word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by Toots and the Maytals. Some believe that the word is originated from Regga, the name of a Bantu–speaking tribe on Lake Tanganyika. Others say that it is a corruption of the word streggae, which is Kingston street slang for prostitute (The Origins of Ska …,n.d.). On the other hand, Bob Marley claimed that the word was Spanish in origin, meaning "the king's music." Veteran Jamaican studio musicians offer the simplest, and probably the most logical, explanation. "It's a description of the beat itself," says Hux Brown, lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many reggae historians claim that the founders of ska music are legendary producer Prince Buster and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. While they were looking for new sounds to thrill Jamaican youth they changed the emphasis of the R&B from the first and third beats in the bar to the second and fourth, creating the offbeat style that became the fulcrum of Jamaican music from then on. By 1962 Jamaica was self–governing and ska was said to reflect the aspirations of the newly liberated masses. In Jamaica, it is said that in mid 1960s summer the weather was too hot and people refused to dance to up–tempo music like ska and this situation leaded to slow the tempo of music so a new style of music was emerged, rock steady. However this is not simply the case, in fact, the reason behind slowing down the tempo can be related with the disappearance of hopes to independent future of Jamaica. It originated around the time that Jamaica was being attacked by European countries like Spain and native people being taken into slavery. Bob Marley was born after the time of slave trading but whites still effected the native people and this is how he got his inspiration for his music. a)The music of Jamaica began five centuries ago, when Columbus colonized the land of the Arawak Indians.
