2. Scene 1 Mise-en-scene: ‘Just Jack’ is a British act, so the setting of a typical British park on a sunny day has been chosen for the mise-en-scene. A sunny day adds to the idea of a ‘glorious day’ which relates to the title of the song, ‘glory days’. Sound: At this part of the video the song itself has not started and non-digetic sound of birds chirping can be heard. This adds to the realism of the video and also adds to the point of it being a nice summers day. Costume: A red top makes the artist stand out in the shot as the background is mostly green and brown. Camera Work: The camera itself stays still as he walks towards it, rather then the camera moving with him. This creates the idea that he is walking towards something/ someone instead of just strolling. The angle is basic and simple.
3. Camera Work: The angle shows the artist himself from a distance, with a closer range of the bin on the right hand side. The bin is shown to be closer to the camera so the viewer can see the prop land in the bin. The model stands further to the left hand side of the screen to make sure he is not hidden behind the bin. The camera is at a lower angle which makes him seem slightly bigger. This could have been used to add to the idea of him being happy and ‘on top of the world’, relating to the title again ‘glory days’. Representation: The idea behind him throwing a bottle from a distance into the bin is to add to the idea of it being an excellent day. It is extremely lucky to get the bottle into the bin from such a distance, so this creates the idea that it is a good or even a ‘glory’ day. It could also been seen as skilful to get bottle in the bin from so far away so this could be the artist exaggerating his skills. This shot has most likely been edited. Mise-en-scene: A clear blue sky to add to the idea of it being a ‘glory day’.
4. Scene 2 A series of shots where the artist walks and the camera follows him. Camera Work: In these shots the camera moves with the artist as he walks. This creates the idea that he may just be strolling instead of walking to a certain place. An Over-the should shot (OSS) has also been used. This tries to place the audience into the video and makes the viewer feel like they are walking behind the model. Also the artist gets shown from a side on view walking in the road. This creates the idea that he is in a great mood and almost in a trance, without a care in the world. Again this relates back to the title of the song called ‘Glory Days’. Mise-en-scene: ‘Just Jack’ is a British pop artist so his video is typically British. The setting are in one of London’s towns and British street culture such as graffiti is shown. Also the artist is in basic and average clothing, and walking through out the video, instead of imitating typical American video’s where the artists wear fancy clothes and jewellery and ride in expensive cars.
5. Scene 3 Camera Work: The angle in this shot is a standard angle, however the shot itself is a Close Up (CU). This could be to show ‘Just Jack’ as an intimidating artist who doesn’t want to underestimated. Mise-en-scene: The setting is in a back street of a London Town. This again adds to the point of the artist being British. Also two of the doors behind him have bright colours on them (purple and yellow). This adds colour to the shot and makes it more interesting. Also ‘Just Jack’ is an unusual artist as the music he makes is unlike other music. He stands out in the charts so the abnormal doors may be emphasising this point. Facial Expression: The model pulls a soft and relaxed facial expression which adds to the soft vibe of the track.
6. Props: The artist changes his top, in contrast to what he says in his lyrics (for example he says “I tip my cap to the world” and his t-shirt changes to a picture of a cap). This adds a comedic side to the video whilst grabbing the audiences attention and keeps them interested. This effect is made by them pausing the shot whilst he changes his top on the spot, then recording again. This is simply done but adds an effect to the video and makes it look more technical then it actually is. The only difficulty in this is the model must keep the same facial expression and be standing in the same spot for it to look realistic and professional.
7. Video effects: The producers and video editors add in a special effect of adding planets to the shot. He always wears a T-shirt with a star in the centre, which changes into a top with a planet on. Both of these elements go with the artist’s lyrics as he is talking about space in his song. This could also be a connotation for him trying to say he is so advanced in the music business that he is ‘out of this world’.
8. Scene 4 Setting: In this shot, the artist stays standing in the same position for the camera, but the scene behind him changes. This again is a simple effect done by pausing then re recording in a different place, but remaining in the same position. This adds interest to the shot and keeps the audience wanting to watch onwards. The setting changes to a graffiti covered wall which appeals to a younger audience. This could be the artist trying to grab more of a younger audience and let them know that even though he is making commercial music, he is still on British streets and involved with street culture.
9. Camera: The camera slowly zooms outwards showing more of the background behind him. This makes the shot look more interesting compared to the camera being completely still. This whole shot could be a connotation of the artist saying he is slowly losing grip and fading away from the music scene, possibly from a lack of inspiration.
