Buzz Kill: The Economic and Environmental Effects of Colony Collapse Disorder
1. Buzz Kill:
The Economic and Environmental Effects
of Colony Collapse Disorder
Madeleine Altholtz, Alexandra Beja, and Abbey Myerson
2. Introduction
• Bees are responsible for pollinating one in
three bites of food we consume
• Over the past several years, the bee
population has been dying in the masses
• This is a future threat to our agriculture
industry
4. Economic Impact:
Almond Example
Figure 1 shows the drastic increases in pollination fees
beginning around 2005-2006, when CCD first became
a major concern.
While almond acreage has
increased, the only
explanation for the drastic
scale of the fee increases is
the increased costs incurred
on beekeepers as a result of
losing their colonies.
