I estimated I had between a B and A- in the class so I was about right. Academic goals were met in this class for me personally and for the learning outcomes. My goal for expanding my knowledge of culture and cultural discrimination was met very well. I greatly expanded my knowledge and I learned actively while doing so. I also strengthened my critical thinking skills by looking at inequality as a system, opposed to before the class where I thought inequality was a term for individual events and circumstances. I met these goals by engaging in the reading, PowerPoint, and discussion which clarified my understanding. If I had not invested my interest and energy into the work of the class I probably would not have met these goals. The articles we read were particularly helpful for me, I learned a great deal about racial inequality and class inequality, and even identified my own biases and assumptions I had felt before the class.
The factors that made it more challenging to meet my goals were that it was a little hard at first to learn about some topics, such as discrimination towards cultures, because they are very sensitive topics and can be upsetting.

The factors that made it more challenging to meet my goals
were that it was a little hard at first to learn about some topics,
such as discrimination towards cultures, because they are very
sensitive topics and can be upsetting.
I can use the material and skills I learned in this course in the
future. I can approach topics with a better foundation of
knowledge and I now feel more confident in my beliefs. I have
also learned useful ways to approach hot button topics such as
gay slurs or racial slurs. I feel I have learned better strategies
for handling these issues, because before this class it was very
hard for me to approach topics that were personal or sensitive to
me.
My academic goals at the beginning of the course were to learn
what social inequality is, the different types of inequality, and
if it can change.
I have met the goal of learning what it is. Social inequality
works in systems of oppression, and there are many different
types based on race, class, gender, and sexuality. I never
thought of inequality as a system before this class, and it has
made me realize social inequality is so much more than just
individuals committing hate crimes or discriminating. I have
learned it works as a whole, not just the individuals. There are
6. systems of inequality and oppression in our society, in our
schools, in our workplaces, everywhere. I can now better
recognize the inequality at my school, and in society. I also
used to think people were poor because they don’t work hard
enough or are just unlucky, but after the readings I’ve learned
it’s because they have been being oppressed for years and years,
it works within a system and it will be very hard to change. I do
think systems of inequality can change however. Some very
inspirational people like Martin Luther King Jr, Harvey Milk,
Rosa Parks, Charlene Teeters, have proven it. It is hard work
but I think it is important to be an activist in these issues to
better our society as a whole, because oppression affects all
people not just the ones who are being oppressed. In the future I
will continue to learn about these topics and use the skills I
acquired in the course. I now have more skills to better
approach and argue these topics. Social justice is also an
important issue to me so I hope I can be a positive contributor
to equality in the community as I continue through my
education.
