NOTE : Hakim Ajmal Khan was the major inspiration behind the foundation of Jamia ……
Jamia’s inauguration was a simple ceremony, conducted in a mosque in AMU. There was no
music, no foundation stone, no ribbon cutting to announce the inauguration. There are no
photographs. All that remains from the ceremony is oral history, and some written records in
books such as Jamia Ki Kahani by Abdul Ghaffar Mudholi, one of the teachers who left AMU
to form Jamia. [29 ,OCTOBER, 1920]

Hakim Ajmal Khan treated Jamia Millia like his child and was always concerned about it
There are stories that show his deep love, sincerity and dedication for Jamia.

Hakim Sahab was so concerned about Jamia that “he cut part of the cost of his daughter’s marriage
and also made the family of his son-in-law cut part of the expenses and gave the amount to Jamia.”

In march 1920: Mahatma Gandhi proposes a program of Non-Cooperation movement against the
colonial regime.
In May 1920: Gandhi ji’s revolutionary strategy is swiftly adopted by Muslim leaders of the khilafat
movement which was led by:
 Hakim Ajmal khan
 Hasrat Mohani
 Shaukat Ali and
Mohammad Ali
 Hussain Ahmad Madni
 Abdul Bari Farangi Mohali
 Mahmud-Al-Hasan
 Abdul Kalam Azad
 Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari
June 1920: At an all party conference,in Allahabad a committee was put in place to draw out a
programme for Non-Cooperation.
October 2nd week 1920: Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Mohammad Ali come to Aligarh and
appeal to the students of MAO ( later called the Aligarh Muslim University ) to join the National
Movement.
After rallying in support of the movement, the students boycott classes and defined the british
administration.
Shocked by the unity of Hindu-Muslim anti-colonial activism, The British administration shut the
MAO college down and evacuated the hostels.
End of october 1920: the call of establish a National alternative to the British
sponsored education.
Received the blessings of the leaders of the movements,Gandhi and Maulana
Mahmud-ul-Hasan.
November 1920: The result was the JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA (a true offspring of
revolution).
The university was founded in twenty tents.
Erected at a short distance from the MAO college at Aligarh.
As it explicity expoused an anti-colonial
national cause,the university could only relay
upon private funds.
Hakim Ajmal , Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Abdul
Majeed Khawaja among others went as far as
selling their own private property to fund the
university.
Moreover, they toured india and abroad to
collect funds to protect it from collapse.
On the year of his demise, despite illness,
Hakim Ajmal khan toured Bihar and reached
Patna on 10 February 1927. He delivered
speeches in Patna, Barh, Bihar Sharif and
Muzaffarpur and collected a modest amount
for Jamia Millia Islmia.
GAVE WHOLE LIFE TO NOBLE CAUSE
Hakim Ajmal Khan remained the chancellor of Jamia milia Islamia University till he died due to heart
problem on 29th Dec 1927.
He renounced all his titles which were given by the government during Non-Cooperation movement
and all his Indian followers gave him the title of Masih-ul-Mulk (Healer of the state).

  • 14. End of october 1920: the call of establish a National alternative to the British sponsored education. Received the blessings of the leaders of the movements,Gandhi and Maulana Mahmud-ul-Hasan. November 1920: The result was the JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA (a true offspring of revolution). The university was founded in twenty tents. Erected at a short distance from the MAO college at Aligarh.
  • 15. As it explicity expoused an anti-colonial national cause,the university could only relay upon private funds. Hakim Ajmal , Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Abdul Majeed Khawaja among others went as far as selling their own private property to fund the university. Moreover, they toured india and abroad to collect funds to protect it from collapse. On the year of his demise, despite illness, Hakim Ajmal khan toured Bihar and reached Patna on 10 February 1927. He delivered speeches in Patna, Barh, Bihar Sharif and Muzaffarpur and collected a modest amount for Jamia Millia Islmia.
  • 16. GAVE WHOLE LIFE TO NOBLE CAUSE Hakim Ajmal Khan remained the chancellor of Jamia milia Islamia University till he died due to heart problem on 29th Dec 1927. He renounced all his titles which were given by the government during Non-Cooperation movement and all his Indian followers gave him the title of Masih-ul-Mulk (Healer of the state).
