Hakim Ajmal Khan was the founder and first chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia university from its establishment in 1920 until his death in 1927. He was a major inspiration and fundraising for the university when it was first established with only 20 tents after students were expelled from the Aligarh Muslim University for joining the non-cooperation movement against British rule. As the university's first chancellor, Ajmal Khan dedicated his life to the university, funding it through donations and selling personal property. He toured India to generate financial support and ensure the university's survival during economic crises as it relied solely on private funding due to openly opposing colonialism.
