Probability-Class IX
Introduction
In Everyday life, we come across statements such as
It will Probably rain
today
I doubt that he will
pass the test
Chances are high that
the prices of diesel
will go up
There is a 50-50 chance of
India winning a toss in today’s
match
The words ‘probably’, ‘doubt’, ‘most probably’, ‘chances’, etc., used in the
statements involve an element of uncertainty.
These uncertainty of ‘probably’ can be measured numerically by means
of probability.
Probability is extensively used in the fields of Physical
Sciences,Commerce,Biological Sciences, Medical Sciences and Weather
Forecasting etc.
Probability - An experimental approach
When you perform an experiment like tossing a coin, what are the
outcomes?
Outcome of tossing a coin
Head
Tail
Throwing a die
What is the outcome of rolling a die ?
Outcomes of throwing a die
Activity-1: Take a coin, toss it ten times and note down the number of times a head
and a tail come up. Record your observations in the form of the following table
Number of times the coin is
tossed
Number of times head comes up Number of times tail comes up
10
Activity-2: Throw a die,20 times and note down the number of times the
numbers 1 ,2 ,3 ,4 ,5 ,6 comes up
Number of times a die is thrown Number of times these scored turn up
1 2 3 4 5 6
20
Terms related to Probability
Trial: When we perform an experiment, it is called as trial of an experiment.
Eg: If a coin is tossed 10 times, then each toss is called as a trial
Eg: If a die is thrown 5 times then each throw is called a trial
Event: An outcome of a trial is an event.
Eg: In a tossing of a coin, Head and Tail are two possible events
Probability of an event
The empirical probability P(E) of an event E happening, is
given by
P(E) = Number of trials in which the event happened
The total number of trials
