WHAT INSTITUTION DID I USE FOR PRODUCTION
AND DISTRIBUTION
We decided to have an independent institution as this would mean we wouldn’t
have to make it mainstream and would be able to focus on more niche problems
and show a more realistic view about them. This is again a good idea to go
independent due to them normally having small budgets due to them not being
able to not get money like big conglomerates. As we wont be vertically integrated
this will mean we may have to join up with a larger institution to cover the
distribution and exhibition of the media product.
As our media product will be low budget the shareholders will not have that much
power over what is mainly going to be exhibited. Thus allowing the director to have
more artistic integrity. Hence giving us the opportunity to create a more complex
narrative with more enigmas for our sophisticated audience.
WHO WILL BE OUR INSTITUTION THEN??
We decided to use studio canal and Warp Films
We chose these companies due to their
history in making films in the same genre as
ours so this gave us interest in using them. As
they created the critically acclaimed film ‘This
is England’ and mainly used below the line
marketing witch will be our main marketing
WHY WE CHOSE THEM
Studio canal: We
though they would
be a good choice
as they will give us
freedom and will
fund us as well due
to them helping us
mainly financially.
Warp Films: A big
reason we chose
them is because the
amount of platforms
they go into which
we will be able to
use, for example the
are a label company
WAS IT A GOOD DECISION??
I think it was a good decision due to both companies having
past history in social realism films like ‘four lions and ‘This is
England’. This will give us an upper hand as they will already
have stock actors for us which we will be able to use and
they can use techniques similar of that to Shane Meadows
as they have worked before together, so we can put that into
our production. There use of below the line marketing is
especially useful towards us as we are an independent and
will have small funding so using marketing campaigns on
web 2.0 and having people use there converged devices will
be very useful for us as our older audience will have the
disposable income to buy those devices and access the
content. This could lead to the possibility of distributing
digitally.
OTHER OPTIONS??
There were many other independent companies which we
could have chosen however two that came to our attention
especially were BBC films and Pathé. These came to my
attention during my textual analysis of another students work.
As there work was similar to ours these companies would suit
ours very well. They could help with distribution mainly as
they use technical convergence to release films on DVD and
Blu-Ray which would have stretched our audience as they
could access our product on different formats. However this
could result in a lot of money which we wouldn't have. These
companies are also a popular choice due to them getting
extra funding from the BFI and places like Creative England.
COMPARING PRODUCT TO A
SIMILAR PRODUCT:
‘THIS IS ENGLAND’
IMPROVEMENTS COMPARED TO
IT...
THIS IS ENGLAND
•This film was set during a hard time for the
working class during the reign of Margaret
Thatcher
•This film shows the true story of how young
people lived which created exceptional
personal identity
•Our film doesn’t take on such national
factors, as we didn’t really think about social
factors or how they affected the people. For
our film it was difficult for us to create
personal identity as we had never been in
such a situation as drastic as Ethan's.
THIS IS ENGLAND
The director Shane Meadows used stock actors for his
film and got them from the regional location of the film to
make it more realistic, and he would then train them
through things like workshops.
This can be related to our production as all of our actors
had no experience in film meaning that we could create
more realism. However unlike Shane meadows we did
not make any auditions due to timing so we had to rely
on past judgment which paid off but it would have been
better if we auditioned more actors.
THIS IS ENGLAND
Shane meadows thought that the mise-en-scene was important in
creating the verisimilitude for the production and thus making it that
better experience for the audience.
I would say that we kept to this at most parts of the production however I
believe that the kitchen mainly took away the realism as he was
suppose to be working class and that shot takes it all away, thus
destroying the verisimilitude created in the past shots. Our use of
mise-en-scene then could have been used more effectively however
if we wanted to make more out of it then it would have cost more and
due to us not having that much I still think we made the best with
what we had.
THIS IS ENGLAND
Warp Films allowed Shane Meadows to create his
own image which could show how the auteur
theory is present as he was able to get the issues
he wanted and was able to show his artistic
integrity through the working class film.
I think a main problem for us was how we didn’t
research enough about the backgrounds of our
characters meaning that our actors weren't able to
portray them as well, and meaning there was less
verisimilitude. As they could have used a more
regional accent as they could be perceiver as too
privileged in there speech.
THIS IS ENGLAND
I think that our production was good in
showing the social problems in our own
way as we used different styles to
connote his loneliness or sadness for
example the close up of him sitting down
on the train station. This use of the
auteur theory creates sympathy for the
audience and entertainment.
WHAT WOULD BE THE PRODUCTION,
DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION CHAIN FOR MY
PRODUCTION IN THE REAL WORLD?
This is were all films must go through these three stages. For the
production stage of a film this is where the majority of the planning is done,
this may include certain things like getting your cast sorted out and
planning timings and dates for when your are going to shoot etc. A main
part of the planning section is into our genre and audience as these will
mainly justify how your narrative will work out and whether it targets your
specified audience, as this will result in how successful your media product
shall be. As we have the help of a producer and distributor they can then
aid us in the next sections due to us not having the required funding to do
so however if Studio Canal or Warp Films also need funds they could get
funds from the BFI who help fund independent productions.
WHAT WOULD BE THE PRODUCTION,
DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION CHAIN FOR MY
PRODUCTION IN THE REAL WORLD? (CON..)
The next stage would be the distribution of our media product. This
shall be done through the help of Studio Canal UK who have a
pedigree in releasing independent films. Due to them not being a
conglomerate and money driven this allows us to show our artistic
integrity. For the things that they would control would mainly be how
our media product will be marketed to our target audience and also
maybe when the film will be released as they may create posters to
inform the audience. Due to them being independent the marketing
will not be too expensive as we are not profit driven we will allow
things like reviews and awards to create notification of our media
product.
WHAT WOULD BE THE PRODUCTION,
DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION CHAIN FOR MY
PRODUCTION IN THE REAL WORLD? (CON..)
The last stage is the exhibition of the product. This stage just includes where
and when you will display your product to the audience. As our film will have a
small target audience we would preferably want to just show it in cinemas in
locations near to our target audience. We may also mainly have film critics see
the new release of our film first so that they can write reviews and give us more
publicity so that more of our target audience will be able to know about our
product.
MARKETING
The main way for an independent film like us to promote our
product would be to have our own website of the film. This
would raise awareness for our audience as they could access
trailers and posters. We could again use below the line
marketing by making a You tube channel which tells information
about the product every video to attract the audiences interest.
Like I said earlier with Warp Films having many other platforms,
we could use its sister company Warp Records to use synergy
marketing and could release a soundtrack of the films scores.
Thus making our film horizontally integrated.
AIDA
Attention: This will be done through the use of below the line marketing so the use of web 2.0 and
synergy marketing will effectively allow us to reach our target audience, so that they know about our
product and when it will be released.
Interest of Consumer: Our product may be a niche however it is still available for large part of the
population through the use of web 2.0 and converged devices. Resulting in not just our target
audience being able to watch it as sites like YouTube will be available to promote the product to the
masses.
Desire of consumers: This would be done by using the film website and showing parts of the film so
that encouraged the audience to watch it. Also as I have talked about the limited runs this will allow
the audience to satisfy their needs according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs for example morality.
Action: With the use of our opening sequence giving them many enigmas this would then attract them
to go see the rest of the film, as also the use of web 2.0 would make sure that the are given plenty of
information on it.
EXCHANGE
A new way of distribution would be digitally to online stores such as Netflix
and Amazon. These are very popular and would be available to most
people so more people would be able to see it instead if it was to be
released on cinema. This use of web 2.0 means it is easily accessible for
our sophisticated audience with converged devices.

WHAT INSTITUTION DID I USE FOR PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION We decided to have an independent institution as this would mean we wouldn’t have to make it mainstream and would be able to focus on more niche problems and show a more realistic view about them. This is again a good idea to go independent due to them normally having small budgets due to them not being able to not get money like big conglomerates. As we wont be vertically integrated this will mean we may have to join up with a larger institution to cover the distribution and exhibition of the media product. As our media product will be low budget the shareholders will not have that much power over what is mainly going to be exhibited. Thus allowing the director to have more artistic integrity. Hence giving us the opportunity to create a more complex narrative with more enigmas for our sophisticated audience.
  • 3. WHO WILL BE OUR INSTITUTION THEN?? We decided to use studio canal and Warp Films We chose these companies due to their history in making films in the same genre as ours so this gave us interest in using them. As they created the critically acclaimed film ‘This is England’ and mainly used below the line marketing witch will be our main marketing
  • 4. WHY WE CHOSE THEM Studio canal: We though they would be a good choice as they will give us freedom and will fund us as well due to them helping us mainly financially. Warp Films: A big reason we chose them is because the amount of platforms they go into which we will be able to use, for example the are a label company
  • 5. WAS IT A GOOD DECISION?? I think it was a good decision due to both companies having past history in social realism films like ‘four lions and ‘This is England’. This will give us an upper hand as they will already have stock actors for us which we will be able to use and they can use techniques similar of that to Shane Meadows as they have worked before together, so we can put that into our production. There use of below the line marketing is especially useful towards us as we are an independent and will have small funding so using marketing campaigns on web 2.0 and having people use there converged devices will be very useful for us as our older audience will have the disposable income to buy those devices and access the content. This could lead to the possibility of distributing digitally.
  • 6. OTHER OPTIONS?? There were many other independent companies which we could have chosen however two that came to our attention especially were BBC films and Pathé. These came to my attention during my textual analysis of another students work. As there work was similar to ours these companies would suit ours very well. They could help with distribution mainly as they use technical convergence to release films on DVD and Blu-Ray which would have stretched our audience as they could access our product on different formats. However this could result in a lot of money which we wouldn't have. These companies are also a popular choice due to them getting extra funding from the BFI and places like Creative England.
  • 7. COMPARING PRODUCT TO A SIMILAR PRODUCT: ‘THIS IS ENGLAND’ IMPROVEMENTS COMPARED TO IT...
  • 8. THIS IS ENGLAND •This film was set during a hard time for the working class during the reign of Margaret Thatcher •This film shows the true story of how young people lived which created exceptional personal identity •Our film doesn’t take on such national factors, as we didn’t really think about social factors or how they affected the people. For our film it was difficult for us to create personal identity as we had never been in such a situation as drastic as Ethan's.
  • 9. THIS IS ENGLAND The director Shane Meadows used stock actors for his film and got them from the regional location of the film to make it more realistic, and he would then train them through things like workshops. This can be related to our production as all of our actors had no experience in film meaning that we could create more realism. However unlike Shane meadows we did not make any auditions due to timing so we had to rely on past judgment which paid off but it would have been better if we auditioned more actors.
  • 10. THIS IS ENGLAND Shane meadows thought that the mise-en-scene was important in creating the verisimilitude for the production and thus making it that better experience for the audience. I would say that we kept to this at most parts of the production however I believe that the kitchen mainly took away the realism as he was suppose to be working class and that shot takes it all away, thus destroying the verisimilitude created in the past shots. Our use of mise-en-scene then could have been used more effectively however if we wanted to make more out of it then it would have cost more and due to us not having that much I still think we made the best with what we had.
  • 11. THIS IS ENGLAND Warp Films allowed Shane Meadows to create his own image which could show how the auteur theory is present as he was able to get the issues he wanted and was able to show his artistic integrity through the working class film. I think a main problem for us was how we didn’t research enough about the backgrounds of our characters meaning that our actors weren't able to portray them as well, and meaning there was less verisimilitude. As they could have used a more regional accent as they could be perceiver as too privileged in there speech.
  • 12. THIS IS ENGLAND I think that our production was good in showing the social problems in our own way as we used different styles to connote his loneliness or sadness for example the close up of him sitting down on the train station. This use of the auteur theory creates sympathy for the audience and entertainment.
  • 13. WHAT WOULD BE THE PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION CHAIN FOR MY PRODUCTION IN THE REAL WORLD? This is were all films must go through these three stages. For the production stage of a film this is where the majority of the planning is done, this may include certain things like getting your cast sorted out and planning timings and dates for when your are going to shoot etc. A main part of the planning section is into our genre and audience as these will mainly justify how your narrative will work out and whether it targets your specified audience, as this will result in how successful your media product shall be. As we have the help of a producer and distributor they can then aid us in the next sections due to us not having the required funding to do so however if Studio Canal or Warp Films also need funds they could get funds from the BFI who help fund independent productions.
  • 14. WHAT WOULD BE THE PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION CHAIN FOR MY PRODUCTION IN THE REAL WORLD? (CON..) The next stage would be the distribution of our media product. This shall be done through the help of Studio Canal UK who have a pedigree in releasing independent films. Due to them not being a conglomerate and money driven this allows us to show our artistic integrity. For the things that they would control would mainly be how our media product will be marketed to our target audience and also maybe when the film will be released as they may create posters to inform the audience. Due to them being independent the marketing will not be too expensive as we are not profit driven we will allow things like reviews and awards to create notification of our media product.
  • 15. WHAT WOULD BE THE PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, EXHIBITION CHAIN FOR MY PRODUCTION IN THE REAL WORLD? (CON..) The last stage is the exhibition of the product. This stage just includes where and when you will display your product to the audience. As our film will have a small target audience we would preferably want to just show it in cinemas in locations near to our target audience. We may also mainly have film critics see the new release of our film first so that they can write reviews and give us more publicity so that more of our target audience will be able to know about our product.
  • 16. MARKETING The main way for an independent film like us to promote our product would be to have our own website of the film. This would raise awareness for our audience as they could access trailers and posters. We could again use below the line marketing by making a You tube channel which tells information about the product every video to attract the audiences interest. Like I said earlier with Warp Films having many other platforms, we could use its sister company Warp Records to use synergy marketing and could release a soundtrack of the films scores. Thus making our film horizontally integrated.
  • 17. AIDA Attention: This will be done through the use of below the line marketing so the use of web 2.0 and synergy marketing will effectively allow us to reach our target audience, so that they know about our product and when it will be released. Interest of Consumer: Our product may be a niche however it is still available for large part of the population through the use of web 2.0 and converged devices. Resulting in not just our target audience being able to watch it as sites like YouTube will be available to promote the product to the masses. Desire of consumers: This would be done by using the film website and showing parts of the film so that encouraged the audience to watch it. Also as I have talked about the limited runs this will allow the audience to satisfy their needs according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs for example morality. Action: With the use of our opening sequence giving them many enigmas this would then attract them to go see the rest of the film, as also the use of web 2.0 would make sure that the are given plenty of information on it.
  • 18. EXCHANGE A new way of distribution would be digitally to online stores such as Netflix and Amazon. These are very popular and would be available to most people so more people would be able to see it instead if it was to be released on cinema. This use of web 2.0 means it is easily accessible for our sophisticated audience with converged devices.
